Goddamn Alador's face here.

He said he hasn't had a day off in 5 years and it fucking shows in his appearance & demeanor -- things that were chalked up to just be his personality but are maybe actually signs of his suffering -- but when you see Odalia threatening to really put the kids to manual labor the palpable fear on his face is devastating. (Like, her own kids!!!! It probably would've fallen mostly on Amity as she's the one skilled with abomination, but also probably would've resulted in forcing the twins to get abomination sigil sealed instead of studying any of their actual interests)

I feel bad hating him before, like yeah he was neglectful to the point of not talking to his kids prior to this pivotal moment of him finally standing up to her, but with this context revealed he probably hasn't really had a chance to talk to any of them since like... Amity's bday party where they forced her to ditch Willow, lest they become worked like cattle too. He's beaten down and mistreated but if he just shoulders it all himself at least the kids won't get too much of the overflow abuse, right?

Makes you wonder what his side of the bargain was to keep her from exploiting the kids, or how it got to that bargain to begin with. If the closeness they displayed back at Hexside was ever genuine, or if Odalia sought him out specifically thanks to Oracle magic and seeing a wealthy future and it was all some long con, or if maybe it was genuine at one point but then eventually over time it rotted from the core and suddenly Alador found himself locked into this nightmare.

This reveal alone really gives a lot of justification to all of Alador's previous behaviors, and thanks to King of all people he finally got to get out of dodge and save the kids in the process. Good for him. Happy divorce, dude

i haven’t seen people talking about darius and alador’s little moment at the end of watching and dreaming (which i get, they’re smaller characters, they’re not too popular in the grand scheme of things, alador less so than darius, but like cmon) so i thought i’d bring it up because its really sweet

so like. throughout the show the two of them have been shown to hate eachother, but in a way that’s almost a bit contradictory. darius gets bothered over alador on penstagram and mutes him, but why that and not blocking him? why was he even following alador in the first place if he hates him that much?

alador destroys the book that darius had written, but again, why did he have it to begin with? it’s even autographed by darius- did he send it to alador or did alador get the copy himself? either way, it’s not like he destroyed it on sight or refused it, he was clearly using it beforehand

something’s up with the two of them, darius especially. they tease eachother back and forth (kiki clearly did deliver the “tell alador he’s a hack” message LOL), but do so in a way that they keep coming back to eachother to see what they’re up to. i think it’s important to remember that the two of them were friends at one point (hi perry :) hi odalia :/ ) but then split apart at some point

so all of that makes the scene with the two of them at the end of watching and dreaming even sweeter. darius respects alador’s craft and gets excited about it, and when darius grabs alador to shake him, he doesn’t seem that angry, only surprised and a bit confused-

-moreso when darius turns away all flustered and “tch. i didn’t mean that.” you can even see darius blush!

in the end i think it’s really sweet that the two of them grow to respect eachother and maybe even like eachother again in the end. who knows, maybe hunter and amity could end up step-siblings LOL

(also this isn’t entirely old man yaoi related but i think it’s nice how alador has a cleaner workspace and clothes. he takes care of himself now that hes not being overworked by his wife :) )

I hate how the crew wasted so much time developing unneeded and rushed shit and completely ignored things that needed to be touched. They had no shame in ignoring characters like, Emira, Amity, Gus, etc.

They wasted chunks of episodes trying to redeem Alador just so the fandom can be happy, (Y'all just like him cause you get to baby him over your ADHD or Autistic headcanons about him and cause you can ship him with Darius). Yet ignore things like Amity as a character outside of Lumity, or Emira. Emira is great and would have been a good example of a child losing their childhood cause they had to raise their siblings. Credit to the anon who brought this to my attention.

Wasted episodes trying to shove Huntlow in our faces, it was unnecessary and bland. They worked well as friends, it made no sense that they tried to add another Canon ship.

If those didn't happen, we would have gotten so much. I hate how Amity's dream of joining the Emperors Coven was shifted to something Odalia forced on her. She was shown being SO HAPPY over the thought of joining the coven and got rightfully mad over being humiliated in front of said coven. But noooo, she's Luz's girlfriend now she can't have a goal that doesn't involve her sweet potato!!!!

Advice to anyone wanting to make a piece of media, don't clog up the story with unnecessary bullshit to the point you neglect characters with potential to be great. ESPECIALLY if you know well that you won't have time for development of said thing(s).

I say this as a salty fan and not someone trying to be hateful (if it comes off as so please delete this ask), but I don't think Dana deserves Belos. As a villain, he's just too complicated and it sucks seeing his character kinda get ruined.

Personally, I think she does better with one note / one off villains like Tibbles, the inspector from "The First Day", the elderly ladies in the Body Swap episode, the publisher demon and the merchant demon from "Sense And Insensitivity" etc.

With those characters, you can enjoy them because they are meant to be one note, but not Belos.

Honestly, I feel that a lot of the characters remain either one-note or are reduced to one-note characters and it's not just the villains. Willow and Gus barely grow outside of being Luz's friends; they do get mini-arcs of their own but for the most part, they sorta stay in the background so they don't really stand out on their own.

Poor Amity went from a stuck-up perfectionist to Luz's Girlfriend. Once she breaks away from Odalia's influence, her characterization is reduced to just Nice and Kinda Dorky. There's none of that sarcasm or ruthlessness that she had in season 1 and if you're raised by a parent like Odalia, those kinds of attitudes and beliefs don't really go away. Amity may become nicer and more well-adjusted, but her edges have been sanded off, she's just boring.

Hunter was brash and self-confident yet once we learned more about him, his original characterization was replaced with Sad Boy Who Is Also Kinda Dorky. Now, could his cockiness been a mask this whole time? Absolutely. But we don't get much of his old personality Post Heel Turn, instead the show spends an inordinate amount of time traumatizing him and giving him barely enough time to process all that.

Lilith does better in the characterization department, but we still get Cool Aunt Lilith in the end. It seems like if you're a former Bad Guy, you get turned into a dork character to signify that you're no longer a threat and on the Good Guy Team. All of these characters had their edges sanded away and now they're nerds with interests like sci-fi/fantasy or academia.

As for Belos, I feel like the writers never had a real interest in him outside of him being the main villain. But his backstory makes him a complicated character and as we see with the above examples, the writers struggled with distinguishing their characters, let alone handling a nuanced portrayal of villainy.

Sometimes characters outgrow their creators and a character like Belos needed a crew that was actually interested in him in order to bring him to his full potential.

Hitting you all with my sad Owl house headcanons.

(I am projecting some of my own feelings into these, please don’t reply say anything particularly nasty about a certain headcanon.)

1) Luz is named Luz because she was the light of her parents lives, they’d had five miscarriages before she was conceived, and her parents assumed they’d never be a Mamá or Papá.

2) Willow holds some resentment towards Amity, and sometimes deliberately misses out on things so she doesn’t have to see her, but she doesn’t hate her, she enjoys spending time with her sometimes, and she’s had good memories with her, she just doesn’t understand why she feels that way.

3) Amity always thought she’d have to be in a relationship with Boscha one day, and dreaded it. When Odalia told her they’d get her a new girlfriend, her first thought was being forced into a loveless life with Boscha.

4) Gus pretty much refuse to make friends out his current friend group in fear they’ll use him.

5) Hunters presence in general reminds people how lucky they had it growing up, and he feels really awkward about it.

6) Willow is terrified of people hurting the ones she loves most and can sometimes be overbearingly protective, particularly of Hunter or Gus.

7) Luz was so scared of experiencing bullying and discrimination on the isles that she sometimes told people she had a birth defect and she was actually a witch.

8) Vee is very claustrophobic, but she doesn’t really have panic attacks and she feels awkward bringing it up.

9) Gus is convinced something is wrong with Mattholomule in like a- is everything okay at home type way.

10) Hunter was raped by multiple scouts on multiple unrelated occasions. He wants to tell his friends/ family just so someone knows and it’s out there, but he’s terrified of how they might see him or what they might do if it gets out there.

11) Amity knows she was mistreated, and that her mother was awful to her, but she doesn’t really consider it abuse, just bad parenting.

12) Darius feels so guilty about the way he treated Hunter that he sort of smothered him when he first came to live with him.

13) Hunter and Luz both self harmed/ had an eating disorder without even realising it. When Luz was little and she got frustrated she would pull her hair as hard as she could, and she was a strong kid. Hunter used to make himself vomit and restrict food intake when he believed he’d been ‘bad’, Hettie Cutburn found out and tried to get him to stop but he always found a way.

Bothering me about the show

1. The main thing that bothering me about helluva boss is the portrayal of abuser that's obviously stella and i really appreciated you make that post regarding stella as an abuser. Some abuser like paimon and stella are really feel like villain cartoon instead of actual abuser you know i found ironic the fandom actually can give much more accurate depiction stella and paimon. When that job supposed to be on the writer not the fandom. I'm gonna said this disney character who's abuser like judge frollo, mother gothel, lady tremaine, odalia blight even though disney is famous for their villain who's over the top their villain who's abuser come far more accurate than stella. Crimson he's actually quite accurate but he lack the motivation, the screentime showing us how before he become abusive, less making him the reason he's abuse moxxie just because he hated him(i remember reading one of the post with the tag helluva boss critical vivziepop portrayal of abuser is just black and white if i remember correctly).

2. The other thing that bother me is inconsistent from world building, character, story, lore.

3. The character who are supposed to be horrible person are not being acknowledge as horrible person, to simplify it blitzo and stolas are gary sue both are never being punished including loona she's also a mary sue well more precisely jerk sue.

4. Some heavy topic or social commentary in this show are being handle poorly

thinking about how scared odalia was of the golden guard and how he could've made her do ANYTHING and it's making me so fond. consider. almost canon-compliant AU where after eclipse lake, hunter feels pretty bad about how things went down with amity, but not QUITE bad enough to defect, so he starts making increasingly stupid and unreasonable demands of amity's parents instead. amity - who has ZERO ability to put two-and-two together wrt what she told hunter about her upbringing - is like "....does he think this is going to upset me?? is this his way of being passive-aggressive?? literally... why would i care. i hate my mom so much. ah well. if it keeps him away from luz he can have at it" meanwhile hunter's just out here like "i'm really sorry i threatened to kill your girlfriend i also like her a lot and am so fucking unhappy. for reasons that i'm Sure are unrelated to that. hey tho. if i make your shitty mom so miserable that instead of being rude to you, all she has the energy to do is come home, get drunk, n go to bed....... are we like..... are we cool,"

Not to get all sad HC posting about Alador Blight after COTH but

The loudest we've ever heard him speak was when he was cheering on/consoling Amity about the barrier and then when he was excited about the jetpacks working.

Otherwise he's consistently rather monotone and soft-spoken. Even when he finally stood up to Odalia after everything, he didn't raise his voice.

Given how easily he used to laugh as a teen vs his demeanor now, or how quickly Amity would fall silent whenever her mother telepathically communicated to her in EE, it was probably trained behavior in that household to be silent around her.

So Alador's probably very accustomed to reigning in his voice/emotions around her, which means there's a good chance he'll start talking louder or more freely going forward. I think it'd be a sweet scene if post-defeating Belos there's some soft epilogue showing everyone afterwards, and in it he's there laughing over something, and then maybe one of the kids mentions it's been a long time since he's laughed like that. It'd be a sweet touch showing the ways she negatively influenced all of them are slowly being undone, kind of like how we've seen Hunter come from flinching before/when being touched vs now he and Gus have their own secret handshake.

Osran; He is very quiet but knows many, MANY, things, also lots of secrets- He trips on his robe sometimes but acts like nothing happened And he knows that library guy malphas (or whatever his name is) pretty well

Mason: Sometimes he shows the other coven heads little tricks on how to fix stuff He's a great father figure Accidentally falls asleep during long coven head meetings but he is never caught.

Adrian: Whenever he gets nervous he scratches his tail hard enough to leave a mark. Since he's like half cat or whatever his nails grow really fast but he never let's them grow and he cuts them alot He can drink coffee at night and still manage to fall asleep

Raine: They say swears sometimes when they're really upset. They can draw really good and they can make beautiful paintings They kept the little things Eda gave them along time ago like rings or dried up flowers (they have a whole book full of dried up flowers)

Eberwolf: They get Irritated by strong perfumes because they have a strong nose. They will literally catch any little buy just to piss off Darius or the others They are very clean surprisingly (kind of like a cat)

Vitimir: He loves the cold and he loves to eat ice He doesn't get along with Terra alot but he loves when she does his hair He always says "A shower only takes 15 minutes"

Terra: She barely talks to her parents because she hates them She spends most of her time in her garden She hates boiling rain but she would absolutely love rain in the human realm

Hettie: She smells like a hospital sometimes She hates her scar on her face that's why she wears that hood She was angry for three weeks when she found out Alador took Odalia's last name

My opinion on popular TOH ships! (No hate to anyone, these just my opinions ^^)

Amity x Luz: Perfect. Perfect in every way. Just two happy little love doves who would part the sea for each other. And it's Canon! 10/10

Hunter x Willow: I LOVE this ship. Hunter and Willow were practically made for each other, my two blorbos ahhhh I can't it's too cuteee plus its kinda implied in the show <3 11/10

Raine x Eda: These two old scraggly witches, can't get enough of them. I love their dynamic and they are so loving to each other! 9/10

Vee x Masha: Vee DESERVES a beautiful enby partner, like, come on people. They would be soooo cute together ahhh 10/10

Gus x Mattholomule: I personally enjoy this one! I think it would be a slow burner but in the end just an adorable well rounded gay couple. 8/10

Luz x really anyone but Amity: I'm not really a fan of Luz x anyone else since 1: that means Luz and Amity would've broken up in most cases and that makes me sad :< and 2: Amity and Luz's dynamic is so perfect it can't be beat. Though it could be worse. 3/10

Hunter x Edric/Emira: I honestly have no idea where this one came from but I really don't like it. It's a bit to random for me, and I don't know enough about the twins to know if they would be good for my blorbo child. 2/10

Lilith x anyone: One sentence. Lilith is canon aro/ace. 0/10

Belos x anyone: Unless it's an au I don't like it. Belos don't deserve love. Blegh. 1/10

Boscha x Willow: Uhmmmm I'm not really a fan of bullies to lovers (Lumity DOESNT count T-T) and Boscha is really clingy, a bit too much for me to think this would work out. 2/10

Darius x Alador: Y e s . Alador deserves a happy relationship after the Odalia incident. 8/10

Eda x Camilla: This doesn't really sit right with me but girlboss I guess. 5/10

i really really want a young eda spinoff and i know most people are thinking about the fluffy cute stuff, seeing the old hexsquad as kids and all. i want to see that too but i also hope they use that to play up the dramatic irony and the tragedy of it all

because like. we know where these kids end up. eda and lilith being the grudgeby champions of their school? lilith gives her sister a life-crippling curse in five months and neither of them know this. odalia, alador, and darius goofing around and being best friends? at some point, we know they have a falling out and darius ends up absolutely DESPISING them (or at least alador) for the next thirty years. darius looking up to his cool emperor’s coven mentor, THE golden guard, and thinking he’s the best role model in the world? we know what happens to that golden guard. raine being all excited to show everyone how good bard magic is? we know about their slow disillusionment with the coven system over the next decades, leading them to commit treason against the covens that they-and all their friends-have spent their entire childhoods dreaming of joining.

even if every episode ends with a satisfying conclusion and the characters being happy, knowing where they end up 30 years down the line means we know most of their “victories” are temporary. even if we have an episode where eda and raine have a great time at grom together, we know that eda’s refusal to talk about her problems eventually cause that relationship to deteriorate. even if we have an episode where eda helps lilith gain some confidence, we know that lilith’s envy eventually twists into resentment and causes her to curse her sister. even if we see odalador get together and become a surprisingly sweet couple, we know that odalias’ need for control, alador’s apathy, and both their ambitions eventually warps their romance into a stiff business partnership. and that the perfect happy family they might have wanted initially eventually becomes fake and loveless.

i want to learn about some of the kids’ families as well. i want to see if odalia and alador’s parents made them Like That to amity and the twins. the show is all about generational trauma, after all. it would be sad but understandable to see the blight parents be abused by their parents and know that they ended up repeating the cycle. people say odalia and alador might have broken off their friendship with darius because of family-enforced classism to parallel amity and willow, but are we sure odalia and alador were the rich kids in this scenario? darius was the one who had connections to the golden guard, after all, and this analysis by @yardsards lays out how odalia and alador may not have come from old money. if they lost a friend because they weren’t seen as “high society,” then it could explain why odalia is so obsessed with family image and prestige as an adult. and also, i want to see raine’s parents. why did they insist on sending raine to an expensive school they hated? were they part of why raine was so insecure about the bard magic thing or was that just the other kids? also, i want to see more of gwen and dell. we already know how gwen failed the clawthorne sisters as a mother i want to see how dell did it. (i love both of them so much but it takes both parents to make your kids Like That)

and i would love to see them explore the emperor’s regime through the eyes of kids who have never known anything else. the clawthornes were wild witches, but lilith especially dreamed of joining the emperor’s coven. was this the equivalent of being the first person in your family to go to college? belos had only been ruling for two decades by that point, but he’s had followers for hundreds of years. did some of the other kids have family that were in covens? was that how darius got the golden guard to mentor him?

and why WAS the golden guard from the emperor’s coven darius’s mentor, anyway, if he later joined the abominations coven? did darius originally plan to join the emperor’s coven, but changed his mind after the golden guard’s death? did the golden guard even mentor darius while he was in high school? was his death what caused darius to separate from the friend group? did the other kids have mentors to prepare them for coven tryouts as well? if so, then were the clawthorne sisters at a disadvantage, since they had no family connections to a mentor, and that’s why lilith got desperate? we got a glimpse of the coven indoctrination of children in eda’s flashback episode, so was there more of that at hexside? were there kids other than eda who didn’t want to join a coven, but were pressured into it by society after graduation?

there’s also a bunch of potential friendships between characters that barely interact in the main show. like eda and lilith were in the same track as boscha’s parents. were they friends? rivals? grudgeby teammates? similarly, odalia and perry porter were both in the oracle track. maybe they’re just classmates but it would be really funny if they were actually besties. we get a mention of darius and raine being friends/worsties in hexside but we don’t actually know what they were like! did raine annoy darius with catboy shit like they’re doing as an adult? if they were good friends, that puts raine’s attempt on his life as an adult in a tragic light, since they probably assumed their friend had been indoctrinated by the emperor, and even if they didn’t want to kill him, they had to. it would be a huge betrayal to darius too if that were the case. (but if they were worsties it makes that scene funnier bc raine saw the chance to murder this guy whos been annoying them since age 17 and JUMPED on it)

anyway this started out as speculation on how bittersweet a young eda spinoff would be if the audience already knows the ending of their story but it spiralled into every single headcanon i have about the old hexsquad. go figure
