Welp, The Present is a Gift has officially broken 8,000 words and is rapidly approaching the 10k mark! Also, fun fact: according to the outline, I haven't even finished writing the first chapter. This terrifies me when I consider the later chapters which have way more plot packed into them.

Despite me writing out a very detailed plan for the project, it feels like I'm learning new things about the characters with every sentence I write. Twig is apparently a big fan of learning weird, obscure words and is sad that her old hobby of reading dictionaries has been dampened by her struggling to learn how to read footprint runes. You think you know a gal...

I spent most of today working on programming assignments and even got a nice comment on a past submission I sent in. In it, I mentioned single vs. double equals signs always tripping me up and causing bugs in my code--- turns out they used to baffle my instructor too! He's able to use them in their proper places without thinking now, which is encouraging. Regardless, I have never felt this audio more keenly than today:

I had planned on getting some practice with 3D modeling for low-poly V-tuber of my persona I've been jokingly working on, but that didn't work out as anticipated. I did spend a while admiring how I went from a giant gray cube to this, though:

Ahhh. Look at that beautiful skeleton. So few polygons. So few worries. If only I could figure out how make the pupils move or make a bow.

I also spent a while reminiscing about how Blender lit up in flames at one point and I didn't understand why it happened or how I got it to stop. That was a fun seven minutes of unadulterated terror.

I'm tempted to get back into Blockbench for its simple UI, but after learning the basics of Blender, I know it'd be unbearable to return to the rigidity of working in a program that's pretty much built for Minecraft modders. I just need to stick with Blender and find a few more tutorials to keep me going.

I will miss the fact that Blockbench automatically puts your model on a turntable and offers to pixelate it for you, though. It makes low poly modeling so cool so fast.

Just look at these things! They're so cool! I made them yet they look like something out of my fave childhood video games!

I tried to figure out Super Mario Paint this morning and ended up with my first finished song from that program. Tried importing a few soundfonts from other sources but had no luck getting them to work, and the song was definitely rough around the edges--- but I'm still really proud of myself for making a quick tune! It was a battle to figure out how to export the finished product, and I ended up just recording my desktop with OBS to get it to capture the sound and video together, then converted that video into an MP3 file. It was a very roundabout process, but still!!! I made a thing!

The Shy Guy and Boo instruments, as their flawless character designs may have you suspect, are vastly superior to everything else contained in the program. You can't change my mind.

Also, I was tinkering around with Chrome Extensions and found the most heartbreaking note in the description for one of them.

Tiny Sidebar developer, whoever you are, wherever you are--- I want to give you a hug and a slice of cake or two. Reading this activated my inner anime protagonist and I want you to know that there are so many good people out there, but they're quiet about their goodness. Bad people are just loud as heck and make scenes wherever they go.

Interview Questions - Answered in my P.O.V.

Hey everyone. Before showing the draft script and audio 'Team A' created, I would like to share my answers for the questions we asked while interviewing students from AOD.

These are the interview questions I'm referring to.

Please take some time to check out my answers down below!

Answer 1

In school we didn't get any projects as such. It was just studying the textbook, teacher's guide and heavy reliance on tuition classes. We never got any projects/ assessments as such.

In uni I would say things are very different. The work we do is assessment based. We learn from our lecturers, get the briefs on the assessments and we have to put in all the effort to complete assessments by fulfilling the brief and before the deadline.

If I were to choose which study method I prefer, I would definitely select the uni assessment. The important fact being that 'MGA' is a field of study I'm passionate about and I want to learn more about. Regardless of how many assessments I get, I would still feel motivated to get the job done.

Answer 2

School did not teach us anything related to the adult life in term of handling uni projects or how to get things done in the corporate world.

In school the teachers just pressurized us to memorize the textbooks word for word and to pass the exam. That was basically it.

Rather than blaming the teachers, I think the main blame should go the Education ministry because they are so stubborn to make a change in the education system for the better. It's their responsibility to organize various work life or uni life programs to give the students an idea of what the world outside school is like.

Uni on the other hand focuses on us working on our portfolios during our first year itself. We are also given opportunities to be exposed to the animation industry in Sri Lanka (e.g. Mogo Studios) and internships during our 2nd year.

3. Answer 3

For this question, I wouldn't answer it based on the level of difficulty, but on my personal preference.

I have been studying the local school syllabus for more than 10 years of my life. The Northumbria syllabus is what I've just started learning. Regardless, my preference would be the Northumbria syllabus 100%.

Throughout my school life I felt like a bird in a cage filled with heavy books I was uninterested in studying. There was no freedom to write down my own opinions or show my creativity in answering questions. All the answers had to be written down word for word.

The sudden jump from a syllabus that shoves so many books into your brain to study and memorize, to a syllabus that expects you to dive deep into your own style of research and gives you full on creativity to answer questions and express your own opinions can bit quite overwhelming.

To put it in simple terms, studying the local syllabus felt like a toxic relationship. But getting started with the Northumbria syllabus felt like I put an end to a toxic relationship and I'm currently single. The freedom given may take some time adjusting to, but it is definitely what I need.

Answer 4

I can guarantee you 100% that I did not enjoy any bit of my schoolwork. I had to stay up till late studying through textbooks I wasn't interested in reading just for the sake of passing my exams. It was absolute torture.

The uni assignments on the other hand don't feel that stressful to complete since this is a field of study I'm invested in. The assessments contribute to the learning process I look forward to.

Answer 5

There was absolutely no freedom towards studying in school. If you want to survive the system, you have to stick to the books.

I wouldn't say that 100% freedom exists for uni studies, but it is definitely much better compared to school. You get to learn new things for your lecturers and at the same time, it's important that you made the effort to learn more on the topics of discussion for your advantage.

There are many things to talk about in terms of freedom, but uni definitely wins this round.

Language Learning Through Immersion: One Year Japanese Update

I did it, you guys! I’ve successfully reached my very first year of Japanese language immersion! I honestly thought that I would have given up by now, but this really has been a fun and ultimately rewarding endeavor.

Studying the language has been at the back of my mind for years since elementary school, I just never really knew how to go about it before, and I always thought that I could learn it in a classroom setting someday. That someday for me was in two elective courses in university, and while those were fun as well, it did not give me the same gains that I have achieved in this past year.

It’s probably easier to quantify learning a language in a classroom setting, especially when going through a program to earn a language degree. Learning through immersion, however, I had to really consider what my goals should be on my own. Eventually, I stumbled upon an article saying that for an English speaker, Japanese was exceptionally difficult to learn and that at least 2,200 hours must be spent with the language to reach a certain level of proficiency. So I said to myself, “well okay internet, if you say so!”, and set that as my long term goal going forward.

Spoiler Alert: I did not hit that goal in my first year. I am not crazy and will never listen to Japanese in my sleep regardless of what Khatzumoto (the creator of All Japanese All the Time) says. 

I did, however, hit a total 1,226.65 active immersion hours in my first year, so I guess I’m still a bit nuts. That is 874.96 hours of active listening and 351.69 reading hours. I also did 270.59 hours of passive listening, also known as the time in the very beginning of my immersion where I was using Japanese subtitles (therefore not really concentrating on listening alone). That’s a cumulative 1,497.24 hours spent with Japanese. That’s more than halfway towards my goal! 

To further break that down for curious animanga fans out there, that’s 973 episodes from 109 anime, 765 episodes from 33 dramas, 7 movies, and 967 chapters from 107 volumes of manga (21 series). Here’s my anilist and mydramalist to see what I’ve read/watched.

During all this, I was also doing my daily Anki reps and now I have a 530 day SRS streak (includes the time prior starting immersion and only doing RTK and some vocabulary cards) and a total 8,857 sentence cards. I’ve been averaging 406 cards daily (because I’m trying to cure my leeches) and I spend about an hour per day doing reps and learning new cards. I don’t really track my time on Anki, but I do have a set timer that goes off after 1-1:30 hours.

What I haven’t touched upon at all is output. I have not gone out of my way to find a tutor or a language partner. There’s still plenty of input out there to immerse in before I even consider outputting.

That one day in 2019 where I did not do my cards because I was seriously doubting whether I can actually stick with language learning this time around will forever haunt and inspire me to keep going everyday.

Workflow and Tips

You might be wondering, how do I have a lot of time? I started this whole endeavor in the middle of a pandemic, which eliminated the option of me going to a language school, and a slew of other things I were considering doing last year became impossible (and if anything, very scary to do in a pandemic). All I can say is that, things work out eventually if it is His will, and if I can learn a skill before everything properly settles back down again, then why not? 

I wake up at 5 in the morning everyday to either do my Anki reps or read until the time when I need to get up and I listen to compressed audio throughout the day. The biggest tip is to switch the time you spend watching/reading in your native language to your target language instead. Listen to a podcast during your commute, watch an episode during lunch break, read before going to bed, do your Anki reps in the bathroom if you have to. 

But, if you’re feeling burnt out, there is no reason for you to not take a break! I have been watching a lot of Among Us streams before bed, and I chat with my friends from time to time. Language learning is not a race.

More Stats

Here are a couple of grids of the kanji characters that I have encountered at least once in my immersion and how well I have answered them in my vocabulary/sentence cards.

It's interesting that after almost 9000 words, I have yet to encounter every single character from the Remembering the Kanji 1 (RTK 1) book by James Heisig, which teaches you the most common use characters that are part of the 常用漢字. Which brings me to the question, was writing down every single character being taught in RTK worth it every time it came up in my reviews for the first 3-ish months I was reviewing them? Maybe, maybe not. It certainly removed my anxiety whenever looking at blocks of text in Japanese, but the longer I think about it, the more I feel I should have switched to Recognition RTK earlier. Still, being able to write in proper stroke order is cool I guess, and it also helps me when looking things up in the dictionary.

I clearly need to grind those N2 and N1 level cards! Speaking of which, I have apparently almost covered every single character that could possibly appear in the JLPT (except for the N1 which I have only covered half of) in just a year's time. If the JLPT word frequency lists I’m using are accurate, I have about 2,000 words more to go to to cover most vocabulary that could appear in the test. This makes the "10,000 sentences/words to fluency" argument a reasonable milestone to aim for for Japanese learners if said aim is only to pass the test. That said, 10,000 words is just that, a milestone. It's more akin to a comfortable level of comprehension, but not my own concept of fluency which is being able to read with ease, speak articulately, and write comfortably.

READING IMMERSION GRAPHS

My biggest motivation for tracking my stats is for the purpose of seeing whether my reading speed is improving over time. Reading speed is also easier to measure than listening comprehension which is kind of subjective, so I had a lot of fun making these. What I found is that for the first volume or chapter of whatever it is I’m reading, I always take the time to get used to the writing style of the author. My speed really improves whenever I keep reading the same topic over and over again. On the other hand and quite obviously, looking up many new words in a row and trying to parse sentences slows me down.

I clearly love ちはやふる and I am not ashamed to admit it.

I need to start reading longer manga. When I do, I’ll probably split this graph into less than and greater than 20 volumes. Imagine if I start reading something ridiculously long as 名探偵コナン or ワンピース, these graphs will start breaching the bounds of time and space.

Novels: Time Spent Reading per Chapter

#neverforget the time I read chapter six of Norwegian Wood for 9 hours when it took me less than half that time in English RIP. Also, my interest in Kitchen plummeted LOL. Still planning to finish it don’t worry. 

I also need to start branching away from manga and start reading more novels and light novels, too just so I can make more pretty graphs.

Also known as images that clearly show that I’ve already spent several days only reading the prologue of Island. I’m not sweating. 切那 needs to stop using words I don’t know in succession. More thoughts on this VN far into the future.

Thoughts on Immersion

I can’t really say anything else other that that it works for me, and needless to say if you’re considering this method, remember that the SRS is your friend but immersion should be your one true love.

Prior to all this, I couldn’t even read a sample paragraph from Genki without being confused to my very soul. Yes, I know, it’s embarrassing, but that’s the truth. I was way more scared of failing my Japanese classes than my actual thesis for my bachelors degree, I kid you not. I would quite literally spend all my free time in university trying to understand grammar, memorize vocabulary, and answer my workbook exercises with little to no success. 

I tried so hard to get all the grammar “formulas” into my head for 1.5 years and it only brought me more confusion. I’m never going back to traditional classroom study for language learning, but I will still refer to grammar books when I need to, and not because I feel like I need to answer 4783342 different workbook exercises like my life depended on it.

I still can’t believe it, but with immersion this statement is actually true to a point, don’t try shadowing anime/or calling your boss anime language slurs, use your common sense:

study anime to understand Japanese > study Japanese to understand anime 

Future Goals/Plans

2,200 immersion hours was my initial goal, but honestly I feel like that number could be much higher. There’s still a lot of stuff I don’t understand (news, politics, sciences, etc.), so I’ll make attempts to cover more of those things in my immersion. 

I’ll continue reading more, because that’s a natural SRS in itself. Try to read longer manga, more novels, visual novels, and light novels, and maybe news articles. 

I’ll try to mine as much “JLPT vocab” as I can before making any attempts at taking the JLPT. I noticed that a lot of the words I know don’t appear in the JLPT word lists as much, even though they appear a lot in media/daily conversation. 

Continue mining all words I don’t know because all words are useful anyway. There is no such thing as useless words. I never really understood mining only “interesting words” or words that “pop up” in your immersion. As I said in my previous blog post, 美人局 is an interesting word and I certainly caught it being said in my immersion, but in the three languages I know, I wouldn’t know when I would be able to use such a word, as compared to something like ジャガイモ which is a significantly less interesting word, but is certainly useful to know.

hey-! this is probably a redundant question, but ever since I saw your part in Amphibia reanimated, i’ve ADORED your art. and while i’m not trying to copy your style, i was in the market for a new drawing tablet, animation program, as well as just general art app. If you’re comfortable with it, would you mind telling me yours? No pressure, and I hope you have a wonderful day/night!

hey thank you thank you no worries!! I don't know how helpful my answers will be but I can for sure tell you what I'm working with as of now!

tablet-wise I'm currently using a wacom intuos, it's really rather solid and affordable Especially if you're on a budget or still testing the waters for digital art but honestly I should probably start looking into an upgrade myself LOL. I'm on my second one currently, my first one broke back in early 2020? I wanna say? due to the usb port on it just outright refusing to work after a year and a half of use and I'm afraid my second one's gonna do that to me too one of these days 😔

for animation I use krita! free, open-source, pretty easy to figure out and mess with; I've been using it since I started using art tablets with the exception of some brief experimentation with gimp that was ultimately fruitless. I WILL say that the animation capabilities are clearly not the program's main focus and it might not work on all computers (it also does not in my experience support audio scrubbing and I had enable drop frames to get the audio to work in general) so. it's a wee bit flimsy and I feel like I put too much strain on it ESPECIALLY for more elaborate multi-shot projects like amphibimate was but! it works for me and for the foreseeable future I'm sticking with it methinks

I used to use krita for general art too, but with my wacom tablet came a license for clip studio paint pro and I love it SOso much; has a steeper learning curve than krita imo but the skill ceiling is so much higher as well. took me a bit to get into the groove but once I did it feels good to use and to paint and draw in and I like the colors/brush systems more. I know clip studio paint ex has specific add-ons for comics/animation but I don't know a whole lot about the technical aspects of either so no thoughts on that. note though that (if you don't luck out and randomly get a license like I did) it does cost money but it is Well worth full price and goes on sale often so keep an eye open! (also I am going to plug the brush I use for pretty much everything because I'm love it)

this isn't a part of what you asked but it's certainly a program I use fairly often so I'll include it anyways; the free version of davinci resolve is a intimidatingly extensive editing program I use for most any video project more complicated than a gif or snippet of animation. some of its more ambitious aspects are locked behind the studio version and I've yet to upgrade to the most current version but with little exception it does everything I ask of it. it's not TOO difficult to figure out but it has the opposite problem I have with krita where. I feel like I'm asking too much of krita right? davinci asks too much of me and my computer JKAGKJDGA the more complicated it is the worse it runs for me and it's doesn't crash consistently enough for me to drop it or complain to the people who work on it but it Does crash enough for me to note that it crashes sometimes. at least for me I could be unlucky but save often regardless Learn from my mistakes,,,,,,,,,,

but yeah hope that helps at least a little bit and good luck figuring that all out! it's the artist that makes the art and not the tools but golly is it easier to put in a nail with a hammer than with a screwdriver

A vision board is a wonderful tool for reminding yourself about your goals and your ultimate outcome each day. One of the most challenging parts of achieving goals is sticking with them.

It is easy to become distracted, lose hope, or even forget about them. A vision board is a solution for all these challenges.

Regular use of a vision board keeps your goals fresh in your mind. Using a vision board also associates positive feelings with the achievement of your goals.

So, what does this have to do with which vision board app is best for you…everything.

To make your digital vision board work you must understand what the purpose of a vision board is and it is probably not what you think it is, you must be able to create you’re exciting vision on it and it needs to be available at a moment’s notice, both on a routine basis and in your moments of weakness.

When this happens, you will need your vision board with you to remind you of why you are doing it and to give you the strength to get through it.

Classic Vision Board

Nearly anything can serve as a vision board. Ideally, your vision board will be portable enough to carry with you. Then you can use it at any time. At minimum you will need to be able to look at it every day.

If you want to do it old school you can make one from poster board, cardboard, or even on a spare wall.

If you do it this way it will be more difficult to take with you which is why Vision Boards Apps are a great alternative or even better, they can be used together.

It might be more fun to create your vision board the old-fashioned way, cutting out images and sticking them down with glue sticks but it does have its drawbacks for use.

Digital Vision Board

A good digital vision board is much more immersive. The ability to add video and audio will help bring it to life. You can even take it a step further by adding subliminal audio tracks.

Technology has also made digital vision boards portable; rather than having it on your wall where you will only see them whilst in that room, you can carry a digital vision board around with you on your mobile phone and watch it anywhere, anytime.

Think about all that wasted time you spend traveling, queuing, waiting, and how you can make use of it immersing yourself in your vision boards.

I’ve created my vision boards using many different applications. Rather than reviewing lots of apps that do pretty much the same thing I wanted to show you a variety of options with different use cases to help you find one that will meet your needs.

Microsoft OneNote

Microsoft OneNote is an excellent, free way to produce visions boards on your mobile device or computer. The pages have an almost infinite scroll both vertically and horizontally, so they are easy to create and be creative with.

OneNote works very much like a traditional physical vision board, you can add text to images, arrows, circle things in different colours, change the background colour and much more. It is a very versatile tool.

The app does not really have any audio / video capabilities so it will be less immersive than some of the others mentioned below.

Pinterest

Pinterest is primarily a search engine, not a social network. There isn’t very much social interaction on Pinterest but people do share their images and videos.

If you would like to share your vision board and use it like an accountability page, Pinterest is an excellent place for this.

Pinterest is also a great place to go for inspiration, it has millions of users making it the place to be to find other people who have boards related to your goals.

It is simple to use, first you select a topic, then you name your board appropriately and finally you fill your board with stuff related to your topic.

You can have a generic vision board or you can categorise your goals and have a vision board for each category, for example, Health, Relationships, Finance, Spirituality, etc.

Powerpoint

To take your vision board to the next level, use Microsoft Powerpoint or a free alternative to create vision board style presentations and save them as videos or just watch the presentation.

This is often a good option as it is such a popular product that a lot of people already know how to use it. If you have never used it before it has a short learning curve and is very easy to use.

You can get really creative with all the animations and make things flash and fade and all sorts of other stuff to make your vision board much more interesting and appealing.

Finalising my 2nd year: Statement

In my assignment submission for the 1st semester I hoped that I will acquire the following knowledge and skillsets:

Expanding my portfolio: I have created new contents of a music video, a tutorial video, a sound design showreel, and I am currently working on my electronic music album.

Becoming a better audio implementation programmer: during the making of the Unity + Wwise audio implementation video and the procedural audio module works, I have been using C# programming language and have learnt new techniques to implement audio in a game. I also successfully finished the Wwise middleware’s 101 and 201 courses which made me become a certified audio implementer. I also had the opportunity to work on the audio of a brand new e-comic book (as part of the dBs Productions team) where I was the lead audio implementer and assistant producer / sound designer. The developers of the e-comic book were very satisfied with my work and knowledge, and requested a ‘How could we improve our audio engine’ document from me, which I have gladly prepared for them. The company will probably get in touch for further works.

Improving my sound design skills by creating and releasing a modern avant-garde EP: unfortunately, I haven’t had time to finish this EP, however, I have finished two songs so far, and I am currently working on the rest of them. The building of these tracks seem to be a slower progress compared to my previous songs, as I am going in deep experimentations with modular and granular synthesis that needs more time to record, select, and arrange them. This EP creation idea was my plan B, for the case if my job applications fail to succeed.

Continuing to create more connections by going on events and participating on game jams, and start selling my music and sounds using online platforms: I attended on the global game jam in January, which was a bit risky because of my recent operation on my right ear. It turned out that I was just over-panicking the situation and I managed to write 5 songs (4 level and 1 menu music) within the first day. I spent the second day creating sound effects and implementing the sounds using Wwise. I have learnt very important communication skills on this game jam. I also approached the Publishing Director of BuildBox which is an aspiring game engine that doesn’t require programming knowledge, to find out more about their audio system.                    

I also posted an advertisement into multiple film and animation groups, offering my music composition on people’s video. I have been contacted by a 3rd year university student who needed music to her interrogation scene, which I finished on time and she was very happy with the result. There is also another video project in which I need to compose music for an office argument scene, which I’ve promised to do after the assignments.

I also found out how I can sell my sound effects and music on the Unity Asset store and Bandcamp, however, both websites need artwork for the uploaded music, and I found it difficult to find or create artworks that are free of copyrights, so I had to delay this step.                                I attended on the quarter Game Audio South West meetup, where I’ve met some new faces.                                I also attended on a Unity online meetup in April, where a funny new co-op game ‘PHOGS!’ was introduced. I asked audio related questions and made sure to make a memorable introduction to the participants, so hopefully next time when I appear on a Unity meeting they will remember me.                        

Working on getting my first paid (possibly game) audio job or internship: Although the e-comic job was unpaid as it was more of an ‘academic research’ project, given the fact that the developers were extremely satisfied with the results we provided and my relentless work for the tight deadline, I trust that they will be in touch as soon as they have a new comic book in the works, that they need music for. 

I am participating in another team, which is an Augmented Reality project for the Exeter Library. I am the audio implementer and I will use Wwise to implement sounds into the Unity AR project. This is a paid project.       

 Job and project description - i.e.: Illustrations of the kind of work carried out, analysis of what you learnt:

Rip-pair game: I have learnt that the stuff we discuss and agree in the beginning of a game jam, is very very important for everyone to follow and stick to.              If someone doesn’t do as it was agreed, it can ruin the whole game feel and aesthetics, as there is only 48 hours to get the game done, so there is no time for correction works and revisits. To ensure everyone is on the same page, small check points can be set up throughout the game creation, where everyone showcases the work they have done so far on the project. On these meetings (and generally on a game jam) using technical words and jargons are not recommended, as these can lead to misunderstandings/misinterpretations of the common goal.                          

Sound Design Showreel: I did not need to learn anything new to deliver the sound design video, although I did lots of preparation works before starting working on this video. The plenty pre-recorded sound libraries I made became very useful as there were only a few additional sounds that I needed to record to complete the work. However, after sending the video to a professional sound designer (who currently works on the new Halo game in Los Angeles, California) who very kindly reviewed my video and provided a long and detailed review, I have learnt a lot. He told me to be careful about using low frequencies for sound effects that can be triggered frequently. He raised my attention on using more cloth/leather/denim sounds especially for jumping and crouching movements.      He also pointed out the lack of footstep weighting, which needs to be considered depending on the character’s bodyweight and walking / running speed, and not just the floor surface. Sound effects in a fight scene can be overwhelming, thus the player is not expected to hear every sound in a fight. More focus needed on the sound when a combo kicks in, or when the character is famous of having that particular weapon, then the weapon is super important to have an amazing sound. (eg.: Kratos and his axe + shield in God of War). He suggested to take a step back and find the small but really important moments, and analyse them under a “magnifying glass”. Think of transients (how sharp a sound should be), frequency range, sound to be tight or loose, using single or double transient and materials/textures of a sound. Since he raised my attention to these details, I’ve been playing games on headphones and focused on the sound design very carefully. I strongly believe, that the more and different type of games I play, the more focused and analytical my hearing will become.

Sherlock Holmes e-comic book: My learning in this project was more about the experiencing of how does it feel to be in a team. I have learnt that it is extremely important to set out the job expectations and responsibilities prior the work has started, so one can avoid inconvenient situations, heavy workload and awkward meeting moments. I learnt that I have to be able to say stop for additional ‘favour’ work, and only do further work, for something in return. That doesn’t need to be money. I have also learnt that it is wise for the manager or leader of the team to have a short catch up session with the members of the team individually once the work is done, to find out how they felt, whether they have any feedback or issue they want to raise. This can help avoiding awkward meeting situations and is definitely helpful to keep the team members happy and informed.                        

Interrogation Scene project: I have learnt that people can deliberately provide you misleading information about their project, just to convince you to work on it. Especially, when you offer your services for free. The 3rd year uni student also asked me to write music for further scenes in her project, but I politely refused to do so, as it was not part of our initial agreement, and I can only do further works for an acceptable fee. This was the moment when I used the lesson I have learnt from a similar previous situation, to be able to say no for someone who (obviously) doesn’t appreciate my service enough to pay for it. I only spent about 6-7 hours composing the music for her interrogation scene, as it wasn’t in the dark-electronic style we agreed beforehand, and her careless attitude started to really annoy me. After sending her the finalised composition which she was extremely happy with, she asked me what kind of scene I was looking for, because she might be able to find something in her files. I politely closed the conversation, as my experience with her didn’t really go as planned, which led me not to trust in her anymore, as well as the quality of the video she provided wasn’t the type of video I was looking for to work on. In this project, I basically learned how to say no, and how to avoid unreliable people.

Raz Kids- Reading Apps

The world of ed-tech is an ever-expanding universe. 

There are apps to teach toddlers and apps for older kids. And then there are apps to teach reading. 

I personally feel strongly that there is absolutely no substitute for reading one-on-one with a child. In scholarly terms, this hand-over-hand reading practice is referred to as direct/explicit instruction. Rupley, Blair, and Nichols (2009).  Children learning to read need guided practice so that they can receive help immediately when they struggle with a word or phoneme. According to  Rupley, Blair, and Nichols “ The key to direct/explicit instruction is the active communication and interaction between teacher and student. This style of teaching can be well structured or less structured in nature.” My gut feeling is that the positive feedback provided by the interaction and the attention the child receives creates a positive feedback loop and is a big part of creating motivated lifelong readers. 

Some of my happiest memories have been working with struggling readers and providing this type of instruction and watching the aha moments and cheering on successes. So, when I started reading about reading apps I was sad.  

However, they have their place in facilitating independent practice, one of the keystones to reading, stressed by experts like  Rupley, Blair, and Nichols. 

Raz Kids Learning A-Z won a 2018 Eddie Award for Educational Software and it is, according to the Raz Kids website it offers a  “teaching product that provides comprehensive leveled reading resources for students. With hundreds of eBooks offered at 29 different levels of reading difficulty, it's easy to put the right content in every student's hands.”

Let’s start with the price. A license for Raz Kids costs 99.00 per year for every 36 students. It is not available for parents to purchase on their own.

Raz Kids or Kids A-Z as it is called once loaded onto a device provides kids with access to a collection of leveled readers. Each book is read aloud, then can be read independently. The books are followed by short comprehension quizzes.

The benefits of this app are access to an immediate paper-free library of books written at an appropriate level for the child; the educator can track students progress working through these leveled readers, making data gathering easier; and the program provides comprehension questions so teachers can assess understanding as well as fluency. And, this app offers materials in Spanish, making it an ideal app to use in some bilingual households where children need reading help but caregivers may not yet be fluent in English. The narration for each story fits the text exactly, helping the reader associate letters with sounds.

The cons are: This app does not provide quality children’s literature! The chunks of text are just right. But when the app is reading aloud the readers are quick and the pacing of the reading is often too fast for beginning readers to follow. And, though there is a lot of importance placed on the comprehension questions, the app offers only multiple choice answers. Open-ended or fill-in-the-blank, cloze style, questions would develop writing and recall skills even more effectively. Also, the app makes it easy to game-the-system by offering the same reward if a reader redoes the module by quick clicking and remembering correct answers to earn stars.

To become truly motivated independent readers kids should be given stories that grab them, with breathtaking art and compelling characters. These stories are not quality children’s literature. 

One of the sets of fiction stories written for level G readers is the Carlos series. This series features a minority protagonist, yay! But Carlos is FLAT, FLAT, FLAT!

In one story, “Welcome Carlos!” Carlos is making a poster for his new school. He has recently moved from Mexico to the United States and has made a poster to introduce himself to the students at his new school.” Carlos has no feelings, quirks, or unique things about him except where he is from. He and his neighbor, Maria, whom he shows his poster to are completely devoid of anything to make them interesting to the reader. 

This app makes navigation easy. The Reading Room icon is a rocket at the left-hand side of the home screen. From there the reader can click on big subject icons to change topics or start a book. 

When reading or listening to the books the reader can move backward and forwards by tapping either side of the app but this is something the reader must intuit. There are no arrows to indicate this option.  

This Academic Choice Award winner is billed for ages 4-10. I was not able to get access to the material at the oldest level to see if the stories got more detailed and compelling as the app is locked by the educational institution that pays the licensing fee. This drives home the point that for most people this is strictly a teaching tool and not something a child would pick up for pleasure. 

Other apps I liked better were 

Reading Eggs an Ed Tech Cool Toy Award Winner for 2019

Mainly a phonics teaching tool, this app has is not free, At 9.95 per month for one child it promises to get kids reading in two weeks. It is available for parents, which means kids can start using it before they start a program of formalized education. The interface is playful and reminds one of Candy Land. Children progress along a phonics path, going through multiple modules to test fluency and learn letter recognition and later, phoneme patterns. Like most apps, it is easy to repeat modules for a higher score. Once a module is complete a child earns a new “pet” This creature appears as a repeating animation. Children can replay this animation for a chuckle whenever they want. 

Rivet 

This app was started by a group of engineers for Google who thought that machine learning could be used to teach reading even more effectively. It only works on Android and Fire devices right now. But, more is coming. 

This free app for android and offers access to 3,500 leveled readers. The stories vary but many use real books and some quality art pulled from the public domain. Most stories about people use photographs as illustrations so most of the art isn’t really fantastic to look at. However, the characters are approached with humor and the plots offer a few more contradictions and twists and turns. This, in turn, creates characters who are rounder and more relatable, such as in the story where Gabriel calls Papa Bee to ask about marriage. Gabriel asks what Papa Bee thinks about marriage. The pictures, mostly of Papa Bee’s world give the reader the idea that Papa Bee is the main character and the story is told from his point of view even though the language used refers equally to all characters and indicates a third-person narrator. Papa Bee says thinks about how good Mama Bee is to him and says “Marriage is great”  Then he thinks about when Mama Bee is sick and crabby. Mama Bee is shown sitting in a chair in her bathrobe with a hot water bottle, a thermometer, and an unpleased expression. He repeats his opinion that “Marriage is great!” The questions go on like this, for every positive statement, Papa Bee internally recalls a negative counterpoint but sticks to his story. In the end, when Papa Bee hangs up the phone the reader realizes that his family has been watching the whole conversation and they are pleased with his monitored responses. The situation is silly, the pictures introduce sight gags to reinforce the humor inherent in the contradictions, and the characters are real people. Readers will relate to watching family interact at less than perfect moments. And, Gabriel’s questions show a mentoring relationship that is nice to watch. The family comes across as being not quite round, but their sense of humor makes them less than flat.

The app is easy to navigate and provides stories about many different topics. Navigation within a story is done with large blue arrows to flip pages and the reader controls the pacing. There is an atomic cloud that hovers over the page and readers can drag it to a word they need clarification on. Tapping the top of the screen brings down the home and settings icons. The algorithm picks up on the reader’s choices to target selections to their taste. A child who chose a book about mermaids receives books about unicorns and rainbows in the next go but a child who chooses a non-fiction text about animals gets similar content suggestions afterward. 

The downsides to this app are that it collects data, the function to have the computer read is clunky and requires readers to click every word for a word-for-word narration of the story. Kids have a read-aloud option that records audio, which on one side is desirable because kids are encouraged to read out loud and reinforce fluency feedback as they listen to themselves, but digital privacy and footprint may be a concern. It does not quiz readers so this may not be as useful as an educational tool. But as far as providing independent reading practice for 4-10-year-olds it’s higher quality than Raz kids, in my opinion.

StrangerDanger: Finding Security Vulnerabilities Before They Find You! by Liran Tal

The wrong package can introduce severe vulnerabilities into your application, exposing your application and your user's data.

This talk will use a sample application, Goof, which uses various vulnerable dependencies, which we will exploit as an attacker would. For each issue, we'll explain why it happened, show its impact, and – most importantly – see how to avoid or fix it.

Testing presentation components visually by Balázs Korossy-Khayll

You have written all the unit tests, integration and e2e tests imaginable to your project, your code coverage is in the skies, you are sure that everything is in working order, your application is ready to ship. Or is it? Frontend developers often face the challenge that even a plethora of tests don’t cover visual differences, and while the functionality might be working and protected by tests, we don’t know much about the layout’s and visual styles’ correctness.

Writing unit tests or manual testing for visual styles is tiresome and error-prone, so at BlackRock we came up with a better solution. Using Storybook we have developed a way of comparing visual differences of the rendered images of our presentational components.

We saw Elton John this past Monday night in Tampa Florida on his farewell tour.  What a treat.  Honestly I grew up on his music as most of us did.  I think 100 years from now it will be playing in elevators!  He played for 3 hours.  You read that right!  He is arguably the most famous/singer/songwriter/composer of our time.    One of my favorite stories about him was how tough and distant his mom was (think mean ugh) and for an 11 year span he didn’t talk to her.  This is a man known the world over as a humanitarian  and honored by the Queen, now married with two kids.  Seemingly he has it all. Before his mom passed he had lunch with her and told her numerous times how he loved her and enjoyed their time together and she said, “Well you know I don’t approve of who you are and what all that you’ve become.” Most of us would want to dagger ourselves after sticking her first!  Sir Elton John said, “I know mom, that’s ok... I love you.”

We saw Elton John this past Monday night in Tampa Florida on his farewell tour.  What a treat.  Honestly I grew up on his music as most of us did.  I think 100 years from now it will be playing in elevators!  He played for 3 hours.  You read that right!  He is arguably the most famous/singer/songwriter/composer of our time.    One of my favorite stories about him was how tough and distant his mom was (think mean ugh) and for an 11 year span he didn’t talk to her.  This is a man known the world over as a humanitarian  and honored by the Queen, now married with two kids.  Seemingly he has it all. Before his mom passed he had lunch with her and told her numerous times how he loved her and enjoyed their time together and she said, “Well you know I don’t approve of who you are and what all that you’ve become.” Most of us would want to dagger ourselves after sticking her first!  Sir Elton John said, “I know mom, that’s ok... I love you.”

We saw Elton John this past Monday night in Tampa Florida on his farewell tour.  What a treat.  Honestly I grew up on his music as most of us did.  I think 100 years from now it will be playing in elevators!  He played for 3 hours.  You read that right!  He is arguably the most famous/singer/songwriter/composer of our time.    One of my favorite stories about him was how tough and distant his mom was (think mean ugh) and for an 11 year span he didn’t talk to her.  This is a man known the world over as a humanitarian  and honored by the Queen, now married with two kids.  Seemingly he has it all. Before his mom passed he had lunch with her and told her numerous times how he loved her and enjoyed their time together and she said, “Well you know I don’t approve of who you are and what all that you’ve become.” Most of us would want to dagger ourselves after sticking her first!  Sir Elton John said, “I know mom, that’s ok... I love you.”
