Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha is such a queer anime, not just because Nanoha and Fate are pretty much married with a kid but also because a lot of the characters are clones, cyborgs, beings born of magic or technology or the intersection of both, and thus, often referred to as non-people by others or even themselves, even their status as truly living gets questioned at times, but the anime shows us that they are living real lives, forming real families and communities, and no matter what they were made as, their happiness matters.

How to make a good dark magical girl anime (comparing a few shows)

So I’ve recently got into the dark magical girl genre and I thought I would make a comparison between a few of them. The shows I will be comparing are Puella Magi Madoka Magica, Yuuki Yuuna is a Hero, Symphogear, Daybreak Illusion, Vividred Operation and Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha

Right off the bat you can already tell that a staple of DMGs is a very long name that most people are gonna shorten and some are gonna shorten the shortening (and that makes no sense I’m sorry). I probably should’ve mentioned that there tends to be at least one that deviates (in this case Symphogear and probably Daybreak Illusion and Vividred)

Anyway, next up we are going to be looking at characters. The main characters are pink (Madoka and Yuuna), orange (Hibiki and Akari), red (Akane) or pink with a blue colour scheme (Nanoha) magical girls with a close (*cough* romantic *cough*) relationship with another magical girl. Madoka Kaname is ‘very close friends’ with Homura Akemi, Yuuna Yuuki has a couple-like relationship with Mimori Tougou, Hibiki Tachibana is literally roommates with Miku Kohinata (not actually a magical girl but did at one point have superpowers and the ability to transform) also they share a bed, Nanoha Takamachi and Fate Testarossa are supposed to be together (I’ll admit I haven’t really watched much of MGLN yet sorry), Akari Taiyou is probably meant to be with Luna Tsukuyomi but I personally ship her with Seira Hoshikawa because of the red and blue (well, orange and purple) aesthetic as well as their personalities working well together and Vividred Operation is the closest you can find to a yuri harem (when they fuse one of them literally ends up kissing the other, tell me that’s not yuri!)

Now might be a good time to mention that I haven’t watched much of Nanoha or Vividred lol but I think I’ve watched enough of the others to make a *decent* comparison. In all of these shows except Vividred, Symphogear and Yuuki Yuuna (although there are past heroes) there are more magical girls than just the main cast. Basically, it’s important to make a LOT of girls suffer (this is where I remember that I should probably add in Magical Girl Raising Project - too late now and I haven’t watched enough of it to make a comparison either). 

Counterpart characters:

The main character: a brave girl who is willing to do anything to befriend and protect people. Probably has either fire powers, flower powers or light powers. Oh and at least one girl is in love with her. But she doesn’t always reciprocate those feelings (time for some HANAHAKI!). One more thing: there’s a one-in-three chance she’s voiced by Aoi Yuuki

The Tsundere/Yandere Lesbian

Usually purple but can be blue or even green! Uhh... I didn’t want to add gifs for any others because it would get too much. Not always tsunderes/yanderes but usually are so ye but when they are it tends to be a mixture of the two

You know what, I’ll let you look up the rest of the similarities and differences lol. but I’ll just mention who they’re made for. Madoka is for people who like despair, suffering and death, Yuuki Yuuna is for people who want pain but not death (and also there is a lot of fanservice so if you don’t like tits, why are you watching it?), Symphogear is for people who want one or two characters to die but not a lot and are okay with a bit of blood (warning, Tsubasa attempts to commit suicide by singing her swan song one episode), Daybreak Illusion is for people who want very cute girls who only really change hair and accessories to suffer along with their superhero teachers (don’t question it), Vividred is for people who like fusions and/or think there should be more yuri harem (aka I need to get on with watching it!) and Nanoha is for people who would like to see their favourite lesbian couple grow up (they’re 9 to begin with and in the most recent one they’re like 23)

Little Witch Academia Background Witch Ships

Hello everyone, back again with another post of mine! This time about my ideas on which BG Girls I ship together. Now yes, I do heavily ship Diakko, Chariox, Barbtte, Hamanda, whatever the ship name for Jasminka and Constanze is. But, I think this would still be fun to post about! I think it would also be fun if I put thoughts for how I can see these ships working. Also, some of these points were made by my friend http://shintorikhazumi.tumblr.com, so I'll be pointing out her ideas for how the ships work. Now enough chit chat, let the list begin~!

Avery x Mary

My Thoughts:

Avery x Mary goes something like this. Since Avery and Mary are in the same dorm room, they interact a lot. I can imagine Avery finding Mary annoying and idiotic at first, but after getting to know her more, she soon finds out that Mary is just pretty excitable and just wanted to be friends, yet is still rather idiotic. As for Mary, she doesn't take things personally so she just takes Avery's coldness in stride. After talking with each other, Avery and some point singing to Mary, and Mary showing Avery some movies she likes, I imagine that that's where the relationship starts.

Khaz's Thoughts:

I kinda fancy the idea of Avery hiding that she likes to sing at first, and Mary finding out in some random way, and tries to use the topic to get closer to Avery, but the latter gets annoyed with that at first, because it's something she never really shares with anyone.

Joanna x Kimberly

My Thoughts:

The thing about the LNNN Crew is that they don't have much on them, except Wangari. Wangari is a bit eccentric but she's also kind and always looking for interesting news. My friend says in Chamber of Time, Joanna is a lot more eccentric, the only thing they remember her doing is yelling about scoops and taking pictures. And Kimberly seems to be eerily quiet, always taking notes, basically really creepy. I've been roleplaying with said friend for more than a couple of years now, and we've had multiple rp's where I play Joanna to be perky, easily excitable, prone to getting easily distracted, hyper, a bit weird and strange most of the time, and very caring. We've kept Kimberly being eerie, pretty distant, rather even scary at times. However, she has a soft spot for her teammates, especially Joanna. Joanna loves to hold and cuddle Kimberly, and Kimberly loves how affectionate Joanna is. Wangari thinks its rather cute how they interact.

Khaz's Thoughts:

Yeah, you really don't get much to work with considering other characters. So even in writing, it's more like, left up to interpretation for most haha. Like how you write them, but built off this base you're given in the anime and minimal resource. That is an interesting take tho.

Sola x Rajani and Rashmi

You see, the two love Sola to no end, and Sola really loves them too. But, the twins are also rather possessive of her. Keep her close to them and even spying on her at times to make sure no one makes a move on her. They even do that thing where they stand behind Sola and do that scary-ominous-in-the-shadows-threatening-look you see in anime when someone tries to flirt with her. So yeah, they make sure Sola is their's to be that close with, and no one else.

Khaz's Thoughts:

So the twins are sharing? "Sharing" essentially? Haha~! That would make for cute balance dynamics, and playing around especially when they have those slight comparisons or jealous episodes. The healthy ones. It's one thing to be jealous of other people and protecting her together, then it's another if it's towards each other. That jealousy. Haha~!

Sucy x Irene

My Thoughts:

Well, for these two it falls mostly in line with their interests. You see, both Sucy and Irene love to prank people, and both aren't the best students. I imagine the relationship starts with them pranking each other, and getting spooked by each other's pranks. Sucy notices how small Irene is (like she's literally Constanze and Sola sized), and begins to follow her. Irene is pretty annoyed by this and constantly tells Sucy to go away. But, Sucy soon gives her advice on how to make her pranks better, and on how not to get caught. So, Irene starts to get slightly used to Sucy. After sometime, Irene starts to hang out with Sucy and even calls her a friend. But, her roommates don't like this, often trying to at times keeping her away from Sucy, and making her improve her grades. Sucy finds loop holes around this though, and sneaks her way to see Irene again. This develops into Irene's roommates and Sucy hating eachother, seeing the other as either an obstacle to seeing her friend, or as a bad influence that needs to stay away. Pretty soon, Sucy starts hugging Irene or picking her up. And this is pretty easy since she's small. Irene's pretty annoyed by this everytime it happens and always demands to be put down, with Sucy not really complying. Irene tries struggling, but even she can't deny it feels nice. Sucy says she doesn't know why she always does this, but it clearly bothers her that she can't explain this. After awhile, Irene is used to this and pretty much lets Sucy hold her. After that, Sucy realizes she's in love with Irene, and she clearly doesn't like that. She's not suppose to have this feeling for anyone, its too embarrassing! But, she soon caves in and tells Irene how she feels, to which Irene reveals that she felt the same way. And so, that's how their relationship starts!

Khaz's Thoughts:

The Sucy following Irene sounds so adorable! Especially if it's just Sucy quietly stalking after her, in that hunched, almost just a cape wrapped around her form like when they went to Andrew's. Seeing that image in my head. Irene whipping her head back to catch Sucy and the latter just stops moving, doesn't even flinch. And then when Irene walks again, Sucy just follows. And they just repeat this looking back and pausing, then back to walking and following.

Bianca x Aileen

My Thoughts:

Basically, Bianca is Luna Nova's student chef, and makes all sorts of magical dishes, she's even hoping to start her own restaurant in the future that makes magical dishes! Aileen loves Bianca's cooking, and can accurately name the ingredients Bianca used in her recipe in her sleep when she sleep-talks. I can see this forming a relationship, starting with Aileen helping Bianca cook, Bianca always going to Aileen when she makes something new, and Aileen wanting to make Bianca's dream a reality. Aileen could even give Bianca a cute nickname, like "Her Favorite Chef!", or something like that. Anyways, that's pretty much what I got for these two.

Khaz's Thoughts:

I can see them having little games when hanging out, like Bianca making Aileen guess which among a set of three similar dishes has a different ingredient, and what ingredient that is, making bets and such. And whenever they go somewhere fancy for dates, Aileen will always tell Bianca that she cooks better to which the latter will either blush and tell her thank you or to knock it off while being embarrassed. And to stop flattering her, while Aileen pouts and mutters "It's true tho...".

Heather x Daisy

I don't really have to say much for these two since in canon, there is a hint of them being an item already. Heather likes to sweet-talk with Daisy and flirt with her, and I can imagine that Daisy takes a liking to this. So, I can see that relationship forming pretty quickly. Plus, Daisy often calls herself the cutest witch in the world, and Heather and their roommate Rosie are the only ones who will constantly agree with her. Yet, I imagine Rosie does this mostly to be polite, while Heather does this out of a genuine love for Daisy. So yeah, pretty easy to ship these two.

Khaz didn't have extended ideas for these two, but she thought they were cute together.

Maria x Carmen

Well, Carmen "Wishing to become an ojō-sama-type person, she became cold towards Akko. Carmen is also noted to be very stubborn and doesn't change her opinions very often.". While Maria "Is a pessimistic girl who is always worried. She finds the solace in brewing potions but, everyone dislikes nearing her due to the smell from her concoctions." Well, I imagine Carmen would be often cold and cruel to even people she's fond of, unintentionally pushing them away. Her stubborn attitude also prevents her from giving up old habits easily, or changing her mood even when she knows she's in the wrong. So, Carmen often is cruel to even her friends, especially Maria. While I imagine Maria is depressed and will seek comfort in others since she has very few friends and is pretty much starved of genuine human contact and love 88% of the time due to her smell. I imagine that even talking 18 baths a day wouldn't get rid of the reached smell! Carmen never means to do this, she just isn't the type to change her mood easily. But, there might have been a part of her that did hate Maria at first. She was ashamed of her. Ashamed of herself. Not that that was right of her. And she knew this. She still had enough of a conscious to know this wasn't right, and started to feel bad. She really regrets this . She thinks Maria is cute and often thinks of asking her out. But, her bad attitude and mean spirited behavior makes her think that that is impossible. But, it hurts her to know she's hurting Maria by doing this. That, and Maria's smell tends to repulse her. Plus, maybe her incompetence with money and her failure to become wealthy makes her more enraged. Along with Akko's antics and her dream of becoming a wealthy young lady of high class society slowly becoming impossible. And because of this, Maria becomes more depressed and opens up to the few friends she has. Also hurt that Carmen, a girl she likes, treats her so cruel. It would take a lot of time and work for them to get together.

Khaz's Thoughts:

Oof just the first lines of these two got me hurting. But I think because of the stark flaws they have, there's a lot to work with. It would make for quite the dramatic slowburn, and if the payoff is done well, it would feel real great.

G: What was your first fandom?

Oh boy….my first fandom huh? Honestly I've been watching anime for a very long time but didn't know the existence of fandoms until later. My first fandom was Magical girl Lyrical Nanoha if anyone even knows the series. I joined it after I learned the existence of Fanfiction.net and started writing my first ever fanfiction…never finished it and kept rewriting it but oh well. 

N: Your favorite fandom (for the people; not the thing you fangirl over).

If I'm to be 100% honest it would be the wizardess heart fandom.  They are Accepting, and really nice and friendly to talk to.

W: 5 favorite characters from 5 different fandoms.

This will be hard! Okay so those are definitely not in order since I would never be able to choose between those characters

1- klaus/Alfonse (Wizardess heart)

For those who know me, you know I love both too much to choose between them lmao. Klaus was a longtime favorite and Alfonse just kept growing on me with every route.

2- Neji Hyuga (Naruto)

just remembering how he dies pisses me off every time…he was my favorite character after all. My poor Neji...I was so heartbroken when I found out he dies in the series. 

3- Chrono Harlaown (MGLN)

Ah yes Chrono, he's an underrated character but he's a character that had so much potential in my point of view. I know Nanoha is a magical girl show but still… he had a somewhat heartbreaking past yet he didn't let that phase him and continued to support what he believed is right. he was definitely one of the more righteous people in the series. 

4-Syaoran Li (Cardcaptor Sakura) 

He's a cute Tsundere okay? There is no way I wouldn't like him especially since I have a thing for tsundere Male characters lol

5- Ijuuin Enzan (Rockman.EXE) 

Ah yes,Enzan how can I not have him on the list? He can be kind of snobbish, Harsh and a little rude, overall the rich guy personality but he has his silly side at times, very loyal to his friends and honestly he's just a cinnamon roll deprived from his family's love. Plus I also love his netnavi Blues (Aka Protoman)

I remebered when I read the old Sailor moon and Magical girl lyrical Nanoha crossover” The white Devil of the moon” I feelt dissapointed. I was not dissapointed with the the characters from MGLN. They were spot on and I really loved how the writer keeped them as close to the Canon serie.

What dissapointed me was the Sailor Senshi. Because BIG SPOILER WARNING!!

Nanoha was the moon princess reincarnitated and Usagi didn’t exist at all. So did the inner Senshi see how weak they were and started to train and mature to be able to fight the Dark kingdom?

NO! They still acted as the naive Girls that belived anything. The writer didn’t so anything But just making them weak compared to the mages of TSAB. When this person could have Done so much more with them.

After watching MGLN Reflection and Detonation (back to back, to be clear), just felt like I wanted to spitball my thoughts on it.

tl;dr it was a fun romp but it’s really just a Frankenstein of all the non-anime content in animated form

For one, for the love of all that is holy please watch [ron]’s subs. The one that came with the blu-ray is just straight up incorrect in some spots.

Overall I enjoyed it and had fun watching it. It gave plenty of fanservice and not the sexy kind thank goodness, the transformations are probably the tamest I have seen to date. I really enjoyed the “local magical girl” feel. Suzuka/Arisa and their families were included in the story and we see how the TSAB has really settled into their Japan office in the 2 years since A’s. Nanoha has always done well in establishing a sense of community/societal structure.

Designs were by the same guy as the one who did Knights and Magic so everyone got rounder and bulkier armor. Not exactly my cup of tea but I do appreciate the amount of armor on Fate haha. on a sidenote wtf is Hayate’s new staff

On a similar note the director for the movies this time around was different. Not one to follow anime production news but apparently the guy who was in charge of stuff from A’s to MOVIE 2nd left for Diomedea in the time between. Obviously a change in director doesn’t always mean that is why things are different, but just something I noticed.

Music was fine, same composer as from MOVIE 2nd. Will admit I don’t have the new themes ingrained in my brain like Gather, Light of the Stars ~ Starlight Breaker though.

Plot wise, I realize they were trying to continue the trend of sympathetic, redeemable villains along side not so redeemable ones. TOS has Fate/Arf vs Precia, A’s has Wolks/Hayate/Rein vs the Darkness of the Book of Darkness, and StrikerS had the everybody except Jail and a few of the Numbers.

In practice it just fell flat. The final villain is basically a Jail expy (knock off Numbers too!) but with even less setup than StrikerS gave. I gave very few craps about Spaghetti Scagletti and I couldn’t bring myself to care about this guy either. The Iris bots were cool but it was clearly a case of “look at all these cool ideas that I have no time to make you care about them”.

Plus the worldbuilding got wonky because they tried to Frankenstein certain ideas in. I get we need a new magic system for a new installment, but idk how I feel about nanomachines. It’s just not very magical. Inherent Skill was already stretching it for me but it is what it is I guess.

Wonder what’s next in Tsuzuki’s brain. Hope he’s not gonna put down the series for good, but at the same time I feel like it’s been a rough several years for the franchise. Like, the cool parts are def still there (yes, even in Vivid Strike). Just missing the bit that gets us to care about the conflicts and what not.

2) A ship you’ll always 💜??

I shipped Daisuke and Ken from Digimon 02 before I even understood what shipping was. Ken Ichijouji and Seto Kaiba were the two characters I gravitated to back then; that YGO and Kaiba stayed a constant for me while Digimon faded away probably speaks to YGO having the stronger cast and story (for myself anyway). But I still have warm nostalgia for Dai/ken.

It’s hard for me to imagine ever falling away from Pride and Rival. They’re special ships to me, and I’ve been using them for escapism for quite a while now. If Dai/ken was my nascent ship, Prideshipping was my first true ship.

It took a while for me to get into shipping, because shipping in the YGO fandom used to be kind of a cringefest. But when I did fall for Pride, I fell very hard and very fast. A few years later I fell for Rivalshipping, though much more gradually. But now I’d say both are about equally lovely to me, in their own ways. Trust/shipping has stuck around in my heart too, but in a more quiet way.

3) Current obsessions??

I’m fixated on YGO because I’m weird. Otherwise, obsession is much too strong of a word. I’ve been browsing the Ryo/kira tags on Tumblr and Pixiv lately. As in Ryo and Akira from Devilman. ::spoilers for a 45-year-old manga:: More so than canon or actual romance, I think I like the ideas swirling inside their relationship. That Satan fell in love with a human, and in his quest to destroy mankind was doomed to also destroy the one he loved. (All the while, if things had been different, maybe Akira could’ve loved him back.) The manga is messy as heck, but that ending had honest poignancy.

A lot of morally ambiguous and ambiguously gay characters can thank Ryo Asuka for their existence, for the better or the worse. (Given Ryo Bakura was named after him as well, and the YGO manga makes a point of contrasting Ryo’s complete disinterest in women with the others acting like horndogs, I do wonder if maybe KT wrote Ryo as a gay man.)

4) A ship you never thought you’d like??

Uh… I got nothing. But I’m happy I dragged you into the Prideship zone, DeLurk. It’s more fun having you here with me.

6) A ship that should be canon??

I’m with you on Madoka and Homura from PMMM. I don’t even ship those two myself, but the writers are so clearly trying to have their cake and eat it too with them. Nanoha and Fate from MGLN are in the same boat, where the writers refuse to make canon what seems to be canon, for the sake of homophobic plausible deniability.

With YGO, I don’t think any ship should’ve become canon, including my own beloved ships. I’m kind of glad KT has been so hands-off with shipping too.

It was in looking over discussions of ambiguous gay themes in shonen and seinen manga series that I really had to come to the conclusion it was a deliberate choice on the writer’s part to leave DSoD open to the interpretation that Seto has romantic feelings for Atem, while also very decidedly not being canon. They knew they would be inviting that interpretation. I also think it’s incredibly naïve to believe content creators are unaware of shipping culture. But even then, I don’t want Prideshipping to be canon. I can see how precious other ships are to other fans, and I know how important that kind of escapism can be. This isn’t a Homura/Madoka situation where one character is blatantly in love with the other. People will see a special rivalry or friendship between Seto and Atem, and that’s lovely too. My primary reading of the film is one of grieving, fractured bonds, and ultimately friendship. Just don’t tell me they hate each other. You really weren’t paying attention at all if you think that.

7) A canon ship you hate???

A lot of the time, I have little interest in canon ships. I remember finding Harry and Ginny in the HP books bland, most romance films do nothing for me, etc. I think series where romance isn’t a focus allow for more complex and prolonged character interactions, and that’s why shipping characters from those series can feel so much richer than canon romance stories.

8) A ship you shipped for years??

Pride, Rival, Trust. You know.

I’ll have gentle bouts of adoration for Dai/ken, Vegeta and Bulma of DBZ, and for Kyoko and Sayaka of PMMM too.

9) A ship everyone 😍 but you don’t care for?

If it’s not a ship I like, then it’s a ship I don’t care for. I’m not someone to have NOTPs though (unless we’re talking about something like Adopt). I’m very ship-and-let-ship. Just enjoy your ships.
