How do I stop letting depression/anxiety control me and how I view myself? I’ve gotten better, but I just feel like my appearance has so much control over me. I am black, but I’ve just been so insecure of my nose and it being on the bigger side, especially compared to other black women (this isn’t to out them down or anything! I think they are absolutely beautiful people and I love them :D). I just feel like I’ve been dealt such a bad hand in life by being unattractive and that all my hardships especially with my relationship with others (romantic and platonic) just stem from me being/feeling unattractive and being a naturally awkward person doesn’t help. I constantly day dream about being a woman like Anok Yai or even someone with the sort of energy as Mia goth. I don’t want this to turn into some pity post, but I want to be able to be beautiful while also replacing this awkward personality of mines. This feels super childish and all over the place, but I just feel a little lost with myself and who I am.

So TLDR is: How do I become/start feeling attractive and become a more confident and charismatic person? Thank you and Im so sorry for the messiness of this post!

In no particular order, my top looks from the 2023 Met Gala "Karl Lagerfeld: A Line in Beauty"

My thoughts are below, but I'll be honest, I didn't really do any background research this year because there wasn't much to be done. These are really just my opinions on whether or not I liked the look.

Ironically, I felt this was a very mediocre year, which led to me having a lot more favorites than usual because they were kind of all on the same level. In previous years I would have separated this into multiple posts, but I don't really see the point.

Doja Cat: I wanted someone to dress up as Choupette the cat and she delivered, and managed to do so in a way that was still fitting for the event

Keke Palmer: She looked amazing, and really captured the Chanel look with the bombshell hair and the extremely bedazzled tweed. I honestly don't want to think about how much that dress weighed

Anne Hathaway: Besides that fact that I love everything Anne Hathaway has ever done, this dress was the perfect combination of honoring Lagerfeld's style while also incorporating it into the style of the brand she was representing (Versace). It had tweed and pearls, but also sex appeal and safety pins

Cardi B: First, I just want to appreciate her ongoing commitment to high fashion and the fact that she had three (3) completely separate looks. This particular Miss Sohee look was my favorite because she's living out my glinda barbie mermaid fairy princess dreams

Harvey Guillen: This was one of the first looks I saw of the night, and still one of my favorites. It has all the Lagerfeld style essentials, but still manages to look unique. Plus, creative menswear always gets extra points because the bar is painfully low, though this year was a surprisingly pleasant exception.

Jennifer Lopez: It's not the most creative look, but it's right up my alley and honestly, do we expect anything groundbreaking from JLo? She's always going to show up in something pretty that's decently on theme enough for me to just focus on whether or not I like it. And this immediately makes me think of classic Chanel.

Penelope Cruz: She was a co-host, it's vintage Chanel couture from the 80's, and she's one of the people I most heavily associate with Lagerfeld and Chanel. A win all around.

Russell Westbrook: I really want to give Russell Westbrook credit for always showing up to the Met Gala and really going for it. I love all the details: the pearl necklace, the tweed blazer with floral clasps, the bows on the shoes

Chloe Fineman: Another first look that turned out to be a favorite. This again had all the necessary design elements without feeling like a cheap knockoff. Also major points for the bedazzled cat bag.

Anok Yai: I don't know and I don't care how this relates to theme, she looked like a goddess

Bad Bunny: Another man not only doing something interesting but incorporating the theme? Genuinely shocking. Obviously I loved the OTT floral cape, but I really loved the ode to c. 2005 Chanel with the backless suit and backwards necklace.

Gisele: She wore the same dress from an iconic 2007 editorial, proving not only that she still has it, but that she's always had it. A true supermodel.

Salma Hayek: She looked hot, I don't know what else you want me to say about it. Also it had color, which nothing else did. My eyes were starving for color.

Glenn Close: For starters, she needed an entire team to carry her train so props for that. She brought the drama, the glitz, and the "age is just a number so shut the hell up" glamor.

Lil Nas X: This was, for lack of a better phrase, a cheeks out, bedazzled, balls to the wall look. The Choupette inspiration is more obvious when he was inside with the fur (ish?) coat on, but I honestly didn't care. I needed a moment and he delivered. Though I do wonder (1) how long it took to bedazzle him and (2) will he every fully be de-glittered.

Brian Tyree Henry: I don't know if it's the pose or the cape, but it's giving me dramatic shakespeare vibes and I appreciate it.

Naomi Campbell: The only issue I have with this look is that they called 2010 Chanel Couture "vintage" and I can't accept that. Beyond that, I mean, it's Naomi Campbell in Chanel Couture. I was also dying for any semblance of color at this point and somehow this dress was among the most colorful

Jenna Ortega: The perfect combination of chanel tweed cropped blazer/mini skirt and the Wednesday Addams aesthetic. Which was interesting because I thought she was trying to move away from that but I don't care it was a successful look

Ava Max: Chanel was known for the haute couture bride, and this not only really captures that, it was one of the most and quite honestly only majorly dramatic looks of the night

Halle Bailey: She looked like a mermaid and I love that for her

Ashley Graham: I would have loved this look regardless, but after seeing the dress it was modeled after, I also think it was one of the best tributes of the night

Tems: Has she ever looked bad on a red carpet? Her headpieces are just getting bigger and more elaborate and I see nothing wrong with that.

Diddy: I love the drama + the floral cape, though I am left wondering how he didn't faint under all of that. Also, you can roast me all you want for captioning his post with Sean Combs but that's what was given to the AP so it's what I went with.

Shai Gilgeous Alexander: A final man who followed the theme and wore something interesting, arguably more interesting than some of the women. I actually think I like this look better without the coat over it.

cr fashion book: “get ready with karlie kloss for the 2024 met gala”

When the first Monday in May arrives, attention turns to which designers celebrities will showcase and how they collaborate with design teams to interpret the event’s theme. While this year’s event has officially concluded, the 2024 Costume Institute exhibition at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, titled “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion,” featured a variety of ensembles that embodied the red carpet theme, “A Garden In Time,” both literally and metaphorically.

This year, Karlie Kloss partnered with Swavrovski’s creative director Giovanna Engelbert and stylist Karla Welch to craft a stunning interpretation of this year’s theme, inspired by J.G. Ballard’s 1962 short story “The Garden of Time.” Accompanied by fellow supermodels and Swarovski campaign stars Irina Shayk, Anok Yai, and Imaan Hammam as well as Engelbert, Kloss embodied the crystal flower, a symbol of beauty and elegance in Ballard’s story.

The strapless, mermaid-style gown in a dreamy petal pink featured Swarovski’s Florere and Millenia collections cascading down its hourglass silhouette and was adorned with 180,000 light rose crystals, requiring seven artisans 225 hours to complete. Kloss’ silhouette was further enhanced by a bejeweled corset enveloping her body in garlands of blossoming pink flowers, showing a harmonious blend of jewelry artistry and fashion design. The corset alone was comprised of 60,500 crystals and 75 Florere jewels and took a team of five artisans 1,600 hours to create. From envisioning her look with Swarovski team to her trusted Met Gala tips, Kloss shares an inside look at getting ready for the annual gala with Swarovski below.

CR: Tell us about your look for the Met Gala, what was the inspiration and how did you work with the Swarovski team to interpret the Met’s theme?

KK: Giovanna, Karla Welch and I drew inspiration from the overarching theme of the exhibit, “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion,” which highlights the sensory aspects and cyclical themes of nature in fashion. We focused on the fragility and ephemeral qualities that are central to the exhibit, particularly through the lens of the delicate interplay between nature and the four centuries of fashion showcased. We embodied this concept by integrating Swarovski crystals into the design in a way that reflects both literal and metaphorical fragility. Wearing a delicate garment entirely made of crystals captures the essence of rebirth and renewal, but also respects the fragility of the historical garments featured in the exhibition.

CR: What does the “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion” theme and “The Garden of Time” red carpet theme mean to you?

KK: The exhibition celebrates fashion that’s so fragile that it can no longer be worn, elevating these pieces into something almost sacred. I love that we’re celebrating the beauty of these archives and the creativity and inspiration behind them. In Ballard’s short story, the garden symbolizes beauty, peace and innocence. To me, these themes are enduring, not ephemeral. They remind us to find moments of stillness and reflection to appreciate the beauty around us.

CR: You’ve been to a handful of Met Galas at this point, are there any pre-Met rituals you swear by?

KK: Taking a moment to center myself through a few different forms of self-care is a must. Squeezing in a facial at Tracie Martin and a gloss by my favorite, Jenna Perry, and a lymphatic massage if time allows!

CR: What have been some of your favorite Met Gala moments?

KK: That’s a tough one…of course the moment of ‘looking camp in the eye’ is something that still gets referenced today and honestly, I’m happy we are able to still laugh about it. Last year, however, was the most special for Josh and me. Getting to share my baby bump on the red carpet was a moment that I will cherish forever.

(she may have blocked me, in which case please tell her that my distinction between cis women and trans women that enjoy otaku culture and are attracted to women was completely untrue and unempathetic to peoples cultures and sexualities, and that i think her and her interests are perfectly fine and normal, and that my mindset was "well ive already dug myself into this hole, i cant crawl out of it, might as well js go all the way through" at the time of sending those anons, i did not even believe what *i* was saying, and i am deeply and sincerely sorry for my upsetting and untrue words, and that i am working to become *actually* inclusive of trans women this time)

i realised that i had been influenced by terfs in the feminist community and that i was not doing a good or even adequate job of barring myself against their poisionous and insidious ideology- neither of you have to forgive my horrible and transphobic words, i just hope that i no longer make you feel unsafe and that you know that i will not put other beautiful and kind trans women what i put you through. <3

This is how Twisters (2024) could have been done in a God honouring way:

Jeremy Allen White plays Dr. Reed Harding, the storm chasing son of Helen Hunt and Bill Paxton. His partner in science and navigator is Simone Ashley, a meteorologist studying for her PhD. For the sake of simplicity, her character is also called Kate Cooper, just like in the new film.

Reed is madly in love with Kate, but the mere thought of confessing this to her claws at his fraying sanity, dredging up painful memories of his father's sudden death. Grief grips him, suffocating, almost addicting. He can't bear to suffer the same fate as his mother, left to storm chase without her soulmate. So he keeps his true feelings buried deep within, afraid to expose himself to the pain he would feel if he lost Kate.

Their ragtag-bunch-of-misfit-scientists is comprised of Anok Yai (in her debut acting role), Abbey Lee Kershaw, Milly Alcock, Manny Jacinto, and the one and only Danai Gurira. Meanwhile, Eric Bogosian plays the leader of another storm chasing team. He is a respected father figure to Reed and the rest, giving them all scientific and safety advice.

And now that everything is organized, we can begin.

Our film does not start with Reed; instead, we open on Kate. She is a young girl enduring a sweltering hot day at home with her mother somewhere in the American Midwest. It's the 1990s, and her mum is wearing incredible jeans (which I believe is worth mentioning. Women in the ‘90s wore jeans like nobody else.)

We take our time to build suspense: the wind picks up, wind chimes whirl (in a nod to the original), the tv with news of the oncoming storm flickers, screen doors slam, and curtains snap and billow. Kate's mother rushes outside, frantically securing loose objects in preparation for the impending chaos. She asks Kate to go back inside, but Kate is rooted to the spot, fixated on something in the distance.

Kate: "Mummy ... who is that man?" Kate's mother: "What man, honey?"

Kate's mother follows her daughter's curious eyes to the horizon. There is no man standing there. But there is a tornado--a Dead Man Walking tornado. (Maybe the film is called Twister: Dead Man Walking. Maybe not. We can workshop it. )

[The phrase "Dead Man Walking" is commonly used to describe the appearance of some multi-vortex tornadoes. The multiple vortices look and move in such a way that the tornado appears as though it is walking. The expression is often associated with the 1997 Jarrell tornado due to a famous documentary, although it has been used to describe other tornadoes as well. The photo above is of the Jarrell tornado "Dead Man Walking." The gif below, I believe, is from the El Reno tornado which killed the TWISTEX team. RIP Tim, Paul, and Carl.]

Here is when their town's siren starts wailing, and our action sequence begins. Kate's mother is appropriately terrified. Quickly, she gathers Kate and their dog and rushes to the car. She knows they are facing an F5 Tornado and that without getting underground, they will not survive. The problem is the only underground shelter Kate's mother knows is at a neighbour's house. And they need to get there. Fast.

I don't need to break down the action sequence beat by beat. You know the drill. Kate, her mother, and their dog are caught up in the tornado, but they make it to shelter and survive. As they emerge from their hiding spot underground, they discover that the entire town has been destroyed, including their house, wiped off the face of the earth. Begin opening credits and then cut to decades later, when Kate is an adult in love with extreme weather and chasing with Dr. Reed Harding, who she is in love with too.

(I'll have to do a Part Two as this got away from me. But the general idea for the plot is the same as the original. The team encounter tornadoes in order of increasing intensity. The first tornado we encounter (besides the F5 tornado which opens the film) is an EF-1, the next tornado is an EF-2, and so on. The last tornado of the film is another Dead Man Walking Tornado, an EF-5.)
