Hi!
How long did your acid reflux last? I currently have it and I'm going through hell... any tips for relief???????
I am very very very far from an expert, so like…
https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/gerd/symptoms-causes/syc-20361940
My two cents from personal experience:
If you have constant ongoing terrible acid reflux pain, it might not really be acid reflux. Acid reflux makes my life unpleasant sometimes; hours-long episodes of agony turned out to be gallstones.
Omeprazole works. I wanted to get off it because I read taking it long-term is associated with higher rates of dementia, but it works. Famotidine also works. Mylanta tastes nasty and doesn't have the preventative effect of the pills, but it will soothe the burn. I haven't had much luck with Tums.
I'm not good about sticking to the ~lifestyle adaptations~ Doctors Recommend™. When I have tried them I haven't had much luck. But they are cheaper than omeprazole.
Just to reiterate — when my acid reflux was putting me through hell (rather than being unpleasant and annoying), it turned out to be gallstones and not acid reflux. If you can see a doctor and haven't yet, I recommend it.
Edit: I never answered the question. I've had recurrent acid reflux for… I don't know, over five years probably? More? It's been mostly controlled for, uh, also over five years probably (except for aforementioned episodes of prolonged agony which were actually gallstones).
In terms of how long a single episode lasts, my acid reflux has never been nonstop, at least not that I can remember — it lasts a couple hours at most and subsides, depending on whether and what I've eaten.

doc finally got back to me and diagnosed me with GERD, which i'm not even gonna try to spell out, but it's essentially a chronic acid reflux disease where stomach acid keeps going up into my esophagus. i figured it was either this or a hernia (and it could still be a hernia, but we're gonna focus on the less scary option for now) so my doc wants me to take a two week script of omeprazole and get back to her about how i'm doing by the time i've run the course of the meds.
so, i'm not having any heartburn today, probably due to how little i've eaten and that i've eaten "safe" foods today. I took a nap 'cause I'm EXHAUSTED. i'm gonna stay sleeping propped up 'cause it made me SO comfortable. breaking out in hives again, which could be caused by how freaking HOT it is in my room while i refuse to sleep with less than two blankets for that good ol' WEIGHT. ceiling fan and stand fan on. took the day off work and ushering for the show to rest. i'll get the meds tomorrow and just stay eating toast for tonight.

I had a bad acid reflux flare up today. To get an idea of what that looked like, I could not lay on my right side without stomach acid burning my esophagus. I had to sleep sitting up.
I took two pepto bismol chews and tried to go back to sleep. Drank a lot of water. Didn't work. When I got up, I took Omeprazole. This, I rarely take due to the side effects. Symptoms still didn't go away.
I drank two whole water bottles at work, and took more pepto bismol pills. Barely did anything. Then I got honey oolong bubble milk tea as a last resort and that worked.
For people who do not understand GERD or think it's just heartburn and everyone gets that. Uh, half the medicines I take barely put a dent in it and tums don't work. Like... lmao this condition sucks.

FOLLOWING MY GUT INSTINCT
OMEPRAZOLE and the potential problems with Proton Pump Inhibitors
For many of us living with ITP one of the drugs that we may have encountered on our purple journey is Omeprazole.
Just one of a class of drugs known as Proton Pump Inhibitors (see link at the end of this article for a full list ) , Omeprazole reduces the amount of acid our stomach makes.
Unfortunately when we are prescribed Prednisolone and in my case Mycophenolate Mofetil (MMF) for our ITP it can cause other potential problems like acid reflux, indigestion, heart burn.
So Omeprazole is mainly used to help reduce the acidic effect of steroids and other drugs like MMF on the stomach. For patients started on steroids such as Prednisolone or MMF the use of Omeprazole is often advised to prevent ulcers from forming in the stomach or gut lining.
The Omeprazole dose of a 20mg tablet once a day before breakfast is the regime many of us ITP folk will be familiar with.
As previously stated Omeprazole is a type of medicine called a proton pump inhibitor (PPI). Proton pumps are enzymes in the lining of our stomach that help it make acid to digest our food.
Omeprazole prevents proton pumps working properly which reduces the amount of acid the stomach makes thus balancing out any excess acid which we may produce from Prednisolone or MMF use.
So far so good BUT - in addition to reducing stomach acid, unfortunately Proton Pump Inhibitors can also do potential harm.
Now this does not mean that they always will be damaging because we are all made differently and respond to drugs in various ways. Short term usage of the drug usually does not cause any significant issues.
The potential problems that Omeprazole and Proton Pump Inhibitors may cause  (especially if taken for long periods) are as follows-
Mal absorption of certain key Vitamins like Vitamin B12 and Vitamin B9 (Folate)
Low Magnesium levels
Gut infections
Bone fractures
Iron deficiency
Calcium deficiency
Nausea, vomiting, constipation, tummy pain
Kidney and liver problems
For a fuller list please see the attached two links….
A.https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC7887997/
B.https://www.nhs.uk/medicines/omeprazole/side-effects-of-omeprazole/
Now there is nothing to say that any of these issues will manifest themselves in those of us on Omeprazole (especially short term) but it is my belief that is worth knowing what the issues are and checking with our specialists how the drug may be impacting our wider health.
In my case it was back in 2020 that I had a slight fall in my Vitamin D and Vitamin B9 (Folate) count. My specialist could not instantly tell what might have caused this (it often happens because of a change in diet) but we ended up feeling that my being on Omeprazole was probably the reason why I was struggling to absorb enough of these key vitamins from my diet.
I was prescribed Vitamin D and Vitamin B9 (Folate) supplements which I still take daily even though I have not been taking Omeprazole since 2020. I now take Gaviscon if I get any signs of indigestion or acid reflux. My Vitamin D and Folate levels are well above normal now and my specialist tests them half yearly.
Just to confirm that my ITP is being controlled by Mycophenolate Mofetil which does cause acid reflux/indigestion but nowhere near as much as the Prednisolone did in my case.
So hopefully my experience back in 2020 will be helpful for others who are taking Omeprazole or any of the other Proton Pump Inhibitors (PPI’s).
A Full List of PPI drugs in the UK is available at the following link -  https://patient.info/digestive-health/indigestion-medication/proton-pump-inhibitors

ME/CFS Myalgic Encephalomyelitis Symptoms
Over the past few weeks I have had a difficult time with my illness here is my real-life description of Myalgic Encephalomyelitis symptoms. The pain takes over the whole of my body every single muscle feels like it is screaming in pain with me, and every part feels like it is working against me. Laying on my left side always seems to be the least painful, I must stress that again it is the least painful but every single part of my body still hurts. A medical professional always asks you to give them a score from 1 -10, 1 being the least pain and 10 being the worst pain you have ever experienced, laying on my side brings the pain to a 7.
When I get like this every function hurts, I can't talk noise hurts me physically, and light causes immense pain so my life is spent in a dark room with no sound. The ability to even think seems mismatched, and I cannot think straight. It sounds awful to say but I know how much pain it will take to go the bathroom so I will hold in going for a number 1 for the longest time, this itself will cause additional problems as your body doesn't function well if you hold your urine for such a long time. I can't eat at times like this as the pain leaves me with no appetite but even if I do feel hungry lifting a fork or my arms going up to my mouth is too much pain so I have to rest in between bites as your jaw aches or bringing your food to your mouth becomes too much, it's like a disconnect from your brain to your arm you want your body to do the action but it doesn't happen your arm feels like it gets heavier.
Not eating or drinking leaves your mouth dry which is never a nice feeling or a pleasant taste so I try to position my drinking bottle so I can keep my straw in my mouth leaving me to take in water when I feel able to. I learnt very early on that I needed to use a bottle or cup with a lid as I would spill drink over me or drop cups to the floor. Unfortunately, I do still drop things a lot and the laminate flooring at the side of my bed looks awful.
Medication
I have to take medication every day to help manage my pain. In the mornings I take 40mg of Zomorph this is a slow-release capsule and I take this twice a day 12 hours apart. On top of Zomorph I take Gabapentin, Mefenamic Acid and Propranolol, the Gabapentin helps manage the pain and the propranolol helps me manage my anxiety. At lunchtime, I take Gabapentin, Mefenamic Acid and Propranolol again. On top of my pain medication, I take Omeprazole as I suffer from severe acid reflux. Evenings I take Zomorph 40 mg Mefenamic Acid, Gabapentin, and Propranolol again but we add Amitryipline, Duloxetine and Hydroxyzine. These tablets help me get to sleep and in most cases stay asleep as I can get very itchy with extremely severe hip and pelvic pain, being itchy and not having the ability to itch is torture within itself but when I am really bad I just do not have enough energy to scratch, I do have an extremely large scratching tool which is useful at times but a lot of the time I use controlled breathing and the power of my mind, sounds silly but it helps. I must stress that this does not take the itch away but focusing my mind to stop me scratching the itch can work for me. I also have Oramorph for breakthrough pain.
One thing I learnt early with this illness is to try to do the minimum on regular tasks so I can conserve energy for things I enjoy doing, this could be watching tv with Graham when he gets home from work or giving Alfie a butt scratch which makes his little tail wag with happiness. One of the first things I bought was walking sticks when I was first diagnosed I found walking extremely tiring so using a stick helped me maintain a little energy as the sticks helped keep me upright. As this later led to using crutches and then buying a wheelchair I was still able to spend time with my family. I felt self-conscious and worried about other people's options in the beginning, learn from my mistake please don't ever be afraid of investing in something that will make a difference in your life if it helps you then it doesn't matter what anyone else thinks.
Technology
Using crutches or a wheelchair within my home meant I needed to make changes in doing the simplest things like putting on the lights as using crutches within your home needs light to see where you are going as a crutch slipping on something wet could mean a fall which is the last thing you want. So I invested in Philips Hue lights within our hall lamp downstairs and on the lamp in the hall outside our bedroom as well as our bedside lights. So with the help of Siri on my phone or Alexa throughout the house, I can now turn on our lights using my voice. I can also set the lights to come on at a certain time or sunset, this helps with security too as this is something that worries me a lot. Our central heating and water control was in the kitchen when I got ill so if I was home alone I would have to go downstairs to put on hot water for a shower or to turn on our heating. So we had the Nest system fitted so now I can control the heating or water on my phone or use Alexa or Siri voice control. Upgrading technology at home made a huge difference to me mentally as it has helped me stay independent even if it is just to turn a light on myself. It may not seem a lot to many but repetitive actions like putting on a light or turning it off when you leave a room means stretching from my chair or having to balance one crutch if I am using my crutches using technology means that I can conserve that energy to do something that makes me feel a little more like me even if it is to watch a rerun of "not going out" with my Hubby.
Essentials
For safety, my occupational therapist insisted on having a second bannister installed onour stairs. This was referred by The ME Team at Broadgreen Hospital, the therapist spent a long time with me going over the things I do and how I could stay safe while conserving energy and depending on my home they may refer other things. I admit that I pushed back on a lot of things as it made me realise how ill I am and that was difficult to deal with in the beginning. From my bed I wanted to be able to be sat up straight or propped up to watch TV or read a book so they arranged to have an adjustable back rest to be delivered to me. I also had a mattress sent to me which helps relieve pressure points this gave the additional benefit of not having to push up from a sitting position ( I hope that is understandable, it means that when I put my feet on the floor they are in a natural position as I am not too far down as the bed is the right height now ). As my bed frame is metal I use them for support when I need to go to my bathroom within the bathroom they arranged to have a toilet support so I did not have to rely on the sink for support when I stood up from the toilet. The next thing they arranged was to have a stool for the shower, I can not recommend this enough, even if you do not think you need it and you get tired as the day goes on having that place to sit while I get clean makes a huge difference.
Spoons
If you haven't already read the spoon theory here is a link https://www.youtube.com/c/christinemiserandino. Christine was able to put into words what so many of us tried to say. While you may not think that you need a lot of things or adjustments to live life with ME or any other illness that makes you exhausted please speak to your GP or your ME Dr in some cases you can even refer yourself to your local council. If having a shower takes 4 ( just an example ) spoons, having a shower sitting down on a shower stool might only take 2 spoons or not having to go downstairs to put the heating on would save you that spoon, not putting lights on when you go into a room or when you leave the room would again save you those spoons. All of this would save you energy throughout the day allowing you to do something you want to do, this alone could make a huge difference to your mental health. Living with any illness is hard when I first got ill I went through some extremely dark days as this illness was taking everything from me and the worse I got the more it took. I went from a Mum who was working full time, going to the gym, and being able to spend time with my family. At the weekend we had amazing friends and a fantastic social life having that all taken away, I even needed help to go to the bathroom as I couldn't do anything for myself. The more I pushed against it the worse I got I would be alone all day in a dark room in immense pain all day every day, I missed out on so much and I didn't want to live like that.
Topping up the Dopamine and serotonin tanks
Now I survive and I do everything I can to help save even half a spoon to do something on my terms which means that I can FaceTime Becks ( sometimes I don't even talk I just listen to her ) even if it is a cuddle with Alfie but being able to do that after a bad day or week makes a huge difference to my mental health, I look at it like topping up the Dopamine and Serotonin tanks. This illness has no cure and you can try to fight it with everything you have but it will win, I know that from experience. So do all you can to accept this illness on your terms, invest in anything which will make a difference to the energy you use, ask for help from your GP and work with your local ME team. I have listed some of the items that I have purchased which make a difference to me if you need help please email me I am always available to help, I may not get back to you straight away but I will get back to you.
GlamSticks
Knowing that I needed crutches to get about I searched online unable to find something different to normal hospital crutches. I came across Glamsticks after seeing an Instagram post I think, thinking back I remember that a celebrity had used sparkly crutches at an award show and mentioned them in an interview. So I did a bit of research and found out more about the company. I emailed them to ask if they would just do all black for me and they really impressed me from the start. Since then, I have bought my crushes as well as a walking stick and 9 years later they still look amazing. The link is below if you have something in mind ask them as they are so accommodating.
I hope that this is helpful in some way. I have also done a video recently talking about the sorts of things I keep in my bags so they are ready to go or grab in an emergency , Click to see What's in my Bag

The Acid Battle
Welcoming a new baby is an exciting time. There are so many decisions to be made, from names to nursery themes to diaper brands. I couldn’t wait to pick out a stroller and set up her crib.
But once my daughter arrived it was only a few short weeks before I realized that when your baby suffers from reflux you need to also make decisions about things you never would have dreamed of, including:
Should we medicate?
What kind of medication is best?
How much medication should I give? When? HOW?
How do I know whether or not this is working?
Yes, all babies have reflux. That is, they spit up. In those first few exhausting weeks it felt so reassuring to be told that ‘it’s primarily a laundry problem’ that she should outgrow quite quickly. Thankfully, for many babies, this is indeed the case.
Unfortunately for some babies, my little lady included, reflux is continuous, extremely painful and -when left untreated- causes a whole host of other uncomfortable symptoms. This is what is known as gastro-esophageal reflux disease (GERD).
As I learned, symptoms of GERD can range from mild and sporadic to severe and nearly constant.
Moderate symptoms can include:
back arching
constant spit up or vomiting
feeding issues
sleeping issues
Severe symptoms can include:
gagging
choking
chronic ear, nose and throat infections
failure to thrive
breathing difficulties
This is the kind of reflux that no baby class or book can prepare you for and it can produce overwhelming feelings of anxiety and helplessness in parents and carers. Seeing my new baby so obviously suffering was heartbreaking and I spent many sleepless nights anxiously googling ways I could help her.
Treating Infant GERD and the Acid Battle
One thing I learned very quickly as a reflux Mom is that sometimes effectively treating infant GERD includes the use of reflux medication such as a proton pump inhibitor (PPIs). Some commonly prescribed PPIs include omeprazole (Prilosec) lansoprazole (Prevacid) and esomeprazole (Nexium). In some cases, once a baby begins taking a PPI things can seem to get worse before they get better. This is what is known as ‘The Acid Battle’ and I can tell you first hand that it sucks.
Sally’s Story
By the time our daughter was 6 months old I was close to my breaking point. We had been through months of formula changes, doctor referrals and various medications and if anything she only seemed to be getting worse. On the advice of her GI doctor we started her on Prevacid (lansoprazole) and were delighted to start seeing some small improvements. She seemed happier when eating and was no longer arching her back or grimacing as much after a bottle.
This relief was short lived. Within a week she was worse than ever and beginning to show signs of a severe eating aversion. She was crying out in pain while asleep, eating less and less and we began to discuss the possibility of a feeding tube. What we didn’t know at the time is that she was suffering from a problem that is unfortunately far too common amongst babies with GERD. Her prescribed dosage PPI medication was far too low and we were giving it too infrequently. Her body was metabolizing the medication before it had the chance to help and it was keeping her locked in a constant acid battle. She was miserable and so were we.
Once we found Dr Prince (an integrative pediatrician who specializes in treating reflux) and got our girl started on a new dosing regimen, the difference was like night and day. Sally’s acid battle continued for another ten days and each one of those days felt like an eternity. At times it was so hard to keep going, especially when dealing with difficult to manage symptoms like the constant vomiting, coughing and choking.
We held onto the hope that this would be our solution and on the eleventh day she finally turned a corner and we began to see major improvements. We no longer had to ‘trick’ her into eating, or sleep feed just to sneak in those precious extra ounces. For the first time I had a baby who cried when she saw her bottle because she wanted to eat, not because she was scared. She stopped getting sick so frequently, and I no longer worried about her choking on vomit while she was sleeping. My laundry pile shrunk, I was able to enjoy feeding my baby for the first time since I had became a Mom and we all started sleeping better.  That said- I know firsthand how hard it is to 'just keep going' in the midst of an acid battle, especially when things are just getting worse and worse. So, from someone who has been there (and made it through the other side) here are some 'fast facts' that will hopefully help
What exactly is the acid battle? Why does it happen?
After beginning treatment with a PPI it may seem initially that your child’s symptoms are getting worse.
This is the result of the body fighting against any form of acid control treatment by producing more acid—it is in a battle with the PPI and the buffer used to make it (think of it like the baking soda and vinegar volcano experiment we all did as kids--lots of bubbling and fizzing makes for a pretty unhappy baby!)
The aim of the treatment is to reduce the amount of acid in your child’s stomach (the goal is to try and get all that gas out--and each time your baby burps, etc. the acid is being reduced)
While this process can take time, the battle can be won by continuing to correctly dose a PPI and persevere through this sometimes difficult period.
Who will have an acid battle? How long will it last?
Not all babies go through an acid battle.
An acid battle can occur when beginning treatment with a PPI, or when beginning a new dosing regimen.
If you are using an effective dosing regimen you should see results quickly.
Most acid battles last several days but some can take up to four weeks to resolve.
If your baby is on the correct dosing regimen you should see some reduction in symptoms by the two week mark.
The healing of the long term effects of uncontrolled acid, such as damaged tissue, can take ten days.
Although it can be difficult, it is very important to give your dosing regimen the full four weeks to see results.
As we learned the hard way, simply choosing to administer a PPI is not always enough. Under dosing a PPI can see symptoms get worse without any improvement because your baby is being kept in a constant acid battle.
What can parents do to help their babies (and themselves!) through the acid battle?
As we experienced first hand with Sally, the first few days after starting a PPI medication (or modifying an existing dosing regimen) can be particularly difficult. As part of the acid battle you may notice an initial increase in symptoms, particularly burping and spitting up/vomiting.  In order to minimize this you can try:
Gradually increasing or titrating up the dose over several days
Holding your baby upright and burping frequently to help get any excess CO2 out (otherwise the gas produced by the stomach acid reacting with the PPI will push stomach contents up and out—aka vomiting).
You can also try giving an antacid such as Mylanta cherry supreme or its generic versions (now known as CVS cherry supreme in the United States). Cherry supreme administered one hour before or after a dose of PPI treatment can also help ease discomfort (Please note: Although antacids like cherry supreme can be purchased over the counter, its so important that you consult with your child's doctor about dosing, etc. first)
Spacing out antacids from delayed release PPIs is particularly important as they can dissolve the enteric coating, exposing the drugs the stomach acid which which will destroy it before it has a chance to work.It is also important to avoid making any other changes to food or medication while you are introducing or changing the dosage of a PPI. Otherwise, it will be impossible to tell if any improvements or setbacks are the result of the medication or something else entirely. This was something my husband and I learned the hard way.
‘Sticking it Out:’ A Dad’s Perspective
One of the hardest things about reflux is trying to tell what’s working and what isn’t. Sometimes Sally would seem to improve and then get so much worse. When my wife suggested we try Marci dosing I was skeptical. Would this be just another failure?
One thing I did know from past experience was that it often takes 5 or more days before you will see a difference. It can be hard to tell what is working, because during those 5 days you may end up inadvertently changing other things too. For instance you may try increasing the dose, and after a day and a bit that seems be working, so you try feeding them something different, or changing the formula or their sleep pattern/etc. then a day or so later they’re worse or back where they started. Now all of a sudden it becomes very hard to tell why.
So the best thing you can do is stick to the advice, change the dosing regime and get through the first two weeks— even if the first week is worse, and even if all fourteen days go badly. With the acid battle things can feel like they get much worse before they get better and you need to give the medication time to do its job.
But even if you haven’t seen any improvements in that two weeks (and that is a really hard process to go through), at least at the end of it you know something for certain - the dose didn’t work - you need different medicine or to increase it/etc. If you changed something else because the first day or two was tough, at the end of day 14 you’re in no better position than you were two weeks ago. If things don’t work you don’t know why now. It’s really important to push through the acid battle. Otherwise you are likely to end up going through it again and again like we did.  It can be really hard to see your baby suffer, but the results— a happy baby who is no longer in pain—are worth it.
Emerging Victorious:
While no one is having fun in the midst of an Acid Battle, behind the scenes (AKA inside your baby’s belly) exciting things are happening. With each dose of PPI medication there will be less acid. By three or four days the acid will be greatly reduced. Less acid = fewer symptoms. For some, this will be the beginning of the light at the end of the tunnel, while others may need to stay the course for a little longer to see results.
Although treating acid reflux in infants is not a one size fits all approach, with perseverance and the correct dosing regimen the acid battle can be won. It’s a tiring and difficult process, but from one reflux parent to another, I can promise it will be so worth it.

Halfway.
I am officially halfway through chemo - I have completed 4 rounds of Adriamycin and Cyclophosphamide, and survived the havoc it has wrecked on my body. I feel weary, not just physically but also mentally. It has already been a long haul and there is a lot of fight left to fight. But right now, as I lie awake in bed at 3am because I was so tired that I slept at 9pm, and also because I drink so much water that I have to pee like a racehorse in the middle of the night, I am allowing myself to feel victorious. I made it through the hardest part of treatment. My body fought hard for me every time it was pumped with poison and more cells were killed. My nail beds darkened, my nose hair fell so my nose was constantly dripping, my brain was only half working most of the time and the worst part of all was being incapacitated by tiredness, in all it’s various forms.
There is chemo-induced tiredness the first week when you cannot get out of bed and you don’t even have the mental energy to read or watch a show. Then there is the extreme fatigue related to low white-blood cell count exactly one week after chemo which feels like complete and utter depletion - your brain is back online but your body has been zapped like a character in a video game that is on its lowest energy bar. Finally there is the cumulative effect of all four rounds that makes you feel like you have aged a million years and need to sit down after doing anything. This is the worst one because I don’t know when it will get better and it means I can’t play with the kids the way I used to. I’m missing out on their summer: trips to the pool, playing in our new backyard, exploring the town, fruit-picking, play dates, day trips, beach trips - I can’t do any of the things we did last summer and it stinks. Whatever precious energy I have I reserve for them and I am so grateful on the days I feel well enough to even spend a few hours a day playing with them like I used to.
So here is my list of advice for anyone else who has to go through AC. (This may be TMI for anyone else!)
1. The nurse will tell you to take either Zofran or Compazine for the nausea. Take both! Be as aggressive as possible with the anti-nausea meds. I also started taking Omeprazole twice a day for the heartbearn and acid reflux after a terrible Round 2. Even then, be prepared for constant stomach discomfort. I had to change the way I eat to smaller frequent meals because it felt like everything I ate was about to come right back up.
2. There will be days you have diarrhea and constipation on the same day. Your digestive system will be a mess, keep track of your BM (bowel movements) like they tell you to. Err on the side of constipation because diarrhea sucks. I started off taking Senna every night but ended up with diarrhea. Then I only took it on days I didn’t poop.
3. Definitely suck ice chips during the Adriamycin infusion so you can preserve some feeling in your tongue. And invest in a big insulated water bottle with a straw. Your body wants you to hydrate and I was constantly thirsty and didn’t feel like drinking anything but ice-cold water which I sipped all day. I hate getting up in the middle of the night to pee and find it so hard to fall back asleep so right before bed I would use my Biotene dry mouth spray instead of drinking water and some nights I actually slept right through.
4. You will spend a lot of time with your thoughts as you lie in bed and the rest of the world goes about their business. Make them happy ones. Try not to Google yourself into a rabbit hole of depression with search terms like Metastatic Breast Cancer (1 in 3 cases of breast cancer end up metastatic, FYI.)
5. I love food so I would eat even on days I wasn’t hungry. It gave me a sense of normalcy to eat with the family. Texture becomes important when you start losing your sense of taste, I felt like eating crunchy foods. Fruit is great for hydrating when you don’t feel like drinking, yay for summer watermelon. You may want to over salt your food to compensate for taste, try squeezing limes instead. Eat whatever you feel like and whatever makes you happy not what you think you should be eating or what people tell you you should be eating. You have the rest of your life to make lifestyle changes. Right now you are in survival mode.
6. Aromatherapy. Your sense of smell changes dramatically so get things that make your room and your body smell nice. For me this was possibly the worst side effect. My own body smelled terrible to me. The smell in my room made me nauseated. I can’t explain it but everything smelled unfamiliar and toxic. Candles helped and so did being outside in the fresh air. Neutral smelling body products like talcum powder or kids Honest body wash also helped.
7. When you’re lying in bed all day, it’s hard to get a good nights sleep at the end of the day. Get some exercise if you can. If not, smoke some weed or have melatonin. It’s no fun being awake alone at night. See 4 above.
8. Friends. You need them more than you think you do. Text, call, visit, reach out. Your family is amazing and you couldn’t do this without them but no one can lift your spirits or distract you like good friends can. Work also helped me feel normal. There is a time for wallowing and then there is a time to just get on with your life.
9. Your newly bald scalp will feel sensitive. Buy some caps because it feels cold when you’re used to having a full head of hair. Buy a neck pillow because you will be sitting up in bed a lot. I hate my wig because it feels like I am pretending to be someone I’m not. You will wear it for others not yourself. Mosquitos love bald heads.
10. Love yourself. Love your body. Love your fighting spirit. If I could go back and tell me pre-cancer self anything, it would be that she is perfect. The extra pounds don’t matter, the house doesn’t have to be clean, the kids can watch all the TV they want, it’s okay. Self-care is not indulgence, it’s necessary. Treat yourself as you would treat the most important person in the world, because you are.

I recognized the acid reflux setting in at work last night so I took an omeprazole when I got home at around 11:30pm.
So tell me why, about 5 hours later, I wake up with a fierce burning in my stomach area, bad enough to feel like I might be ill. I took the medication. I was told not to take it every night because I've been on it for like 9 years and ya know long term effects of omeprazole and all.
I am livid like there is no WINNING with GERD.

Your Guide to the Most Common Antihistamines
H1-Antihistamines
These are what we commonly think of as antihistamines, also known as anti-allergens.
First Generation H1-antagonists are precursors to antipsychotics. They often have a psychotropic effect and tend to calm you down in low doses. Work well as antiemetics against nausea and vomiting. High doses may in some cases cause hallucinations. Often very sedating.
Diphenhydramine aka Benadryl: for some reason really popular in the U.S.? Other countries mainly use it to aid sleep, or to treat an anaphylactic shock. Known to be hallucinogenic in high doses or when mixed with alcohol. IT IS NOT A COLD MEDICINE. ANTIHISTAMINES DON'T HELP AGAINST INFECTIONS.
Dimenhydrinat aka Draminate, Dramamime: a combination of Benadryl and Theophyllin, which is a bronchodilator. Used to treat nausea, vomiting and motion sickness. Due to its highly sedating effect, also used to aid sleep. Like Benadryl, it can cause hallucinations in high doses.
Dimetindene aka Fenistil: very popular in topical cream to treat sunburn or insect bites. In cases where a person doesn't react well to second generation meds, this is usually the go-to alternative, as it is not particularly psychoactive. However, it tends to be very sedating. Most commonly used in relatively high doses either orally or IV to treat anaphylaxis. Can interact badly with tri-cyclical antidepressants!
Second Generation H1-antagonists are safer and cannot be overdosed easily as they don't have extreme side effects. They are less sedating and not psychotropic. If you don't happen to react badly to these, they're the best option available to treat allergies, histamine intolerance or mast cell disease.
Cetirizine aka Zyrtec: your average over-the-counter allergy med. Slightly sedating, but highly effective. Treats hayfever, urticaria, dermatitis etc. Generally advised to be taken before bedtime.
Loratadine aka Claritin: also generally over the counter. Said to not be sedating at all/have no effects on the central nervous system. Treats allergies, eczema etc.
Fexofenadine aka Allegra: sometimes also called a third generation med cause it's technically a derivate of Terfenadin. The latter had a risk of cardiovascular problems that is much reduced in Fexo. It's also not particularly sedating in my experience. I take copious amounts of this as it's a staple to treat MCAS/mastocytosis. It's not available over the counter.
Ketotifen aka Zaditor: also acts as a mast cell stabilizer in addition to being an antihistamine. Treats mast cell disorders, asthma attacks, anaphylaxis and various allergies.
H2-Antihistamines
These decrease stomach acid production (kinda like PPI) and are commonly used to treat reflux, gastritis and other acid-related stomach issues. Since PPI like omeprazole have been found more effective, H2-antagonists have generally fallen out of use, except in therapy for mast cell diseases and in cases where a PPI is not tolerated.
Ranitidine aka Zantac: appears to be the most popular one. Can sometimes cause dizziness, sleepiness, tachycardia and malabsorption.
Cimetidine aka Tagamet: no observable side effects or possibility to overdose. Can interact negatively with tri-cyclical antidepressants, blood pressure medicine, opioids, and a lot of other drugs.
H3-Antihistamines
Kinda rare, sometimes used to treat vertigo and Morbus menière but the effectiveness seems to be controversial.
H4-Antihistamines
As far as I can tell, these are not yet in use. They appear to have anti-inflammatory properties that are being examined.
General Note
All antihistamines can negatively affect your cardiovascular system, cause headaches, and dryness of the mouth. They are also completely broken down via your liver, so as with any medication, if you take it over an extended amount of time, get regular blood checks. That said, especially the newer generations are relatively safe and have few to no side effects. Every medication comes with a certain risk, but antihistamines are in general a lot less risky than for example pain meds, asthma meds, blood pressure meds etc.
However, antihistamines can only treat things that are allergic or autoimmune! They are not beneficial against infections, in fact they actually suppress your immune system. This might be helpful in some cases, for example to not make you throw up, as this is controlled by histamine, but it can only alleviate some symptoms in those cases. If you have allergic inflammations, it can help, especially if used directly on your skin, in your nose or eye, and it can counteract allergic reactions in your body, but it cannot fight bacteria or a virus. Please don't treat your cold with benadryl! Also please don't treat your allergies with benadryl if you have other options, second gen meds are much safer!

1 point submitted 5 months agoThinking about it, it not as much as I expected tbh. Specifically because of videos I bought Lash Paradise awesome and Essence Lash Princess (green one) Probably my HG mascaraI picked up some Catrice products when I was in Spain which I probably would have passed by had I not heard about them through Youtube, I didn have any specific products in mind but bought camouflage concealer is which I have noticed is recommended often by BG so maybe that was a subconscious one. How soon, their natural ability might need to be tamed. I 5 days into IF. I don know if I have acid reflux exactly but i have horrible acid problems and heartburn for many years. I was prescribed omeprazole months ago and it worked wonders, but I don like the thought of taking a pill every single day for the rest of my life to live normally. Frankly I bought the tread for the quality it seems to have over any Nordictrack, Proform or Bowflex option and for the rest of the family to get into running. I thinking it will hold up much better under a multi user roof time will tell there, but I hopeful. Also, I don see why they couldn add media options to the current screen as it just android (I think).. Not getting enough sleep is sure to contribute to fatigue, but what people are doing while they're awake is another problem. The same poll showed one third of Americans are working more than 50 hours a week. People are spending less time taking care of themselves sitting down to read a good book, going for a bike ride with the kids, eating a healthy meal. Anything involving boosting yourself with your arms is awful. For the first several days my mom had to wipe me in the bathroom because I couldn't reach that far. I also couldn't really eat for a while because the antibiotic they gave me made me super sick. I once had a summer job operating paddleboats at a zoo. Per the rules, every person who wanted to get on a paddleboat had to wear a life vest. The lake was only approx.

If your doctor has suggested medication for your baby’s reflux here is what you need to know. 🦠 Proton Pump Inhibitors- Omeprazole and Gaviscon among many are used to help against baby reflux but what they don’t tell you is the side effects from using these drugs. PPI’s work to reduce the production of stomach acids, it does not cure or help with the underlying problem that is causing the reflux in the first place. It’s important to know how the body functions and that stomach acids are there fir a reason. Gastric acid play an important role in your baby’s immunity. It stops bad bacteria from going into the intestines that can cause challenges. Which means your baby is more susceptible to infections while on PPI’s They also disrupts proteins, fats and vitamins from being absorbed efficiently. It’s important to talk to you medical provider or someone who will be able to help you. If your baby is on PPIs it’s important to keep going until you get professional advice. Baby’s need to be weaned of slowly. 🦠If your baby is in reflux medication then it’s a good idea to introduce probiotics. Good gut bacteria to help the decreased levels due to PPI’s Probiotics for breastfeeding mums is also a good idea. 🌿Herbal remedies can also help such as chamomile, Rhugar and other natural options to help your baby through this difficult time. Talking to a herbalist or naturopath can be great options for you. Diet elimination is your last resort as this often isn’t what is causing the reflux however their are babies that do get better by eliminating or I would say reducing dairy or other foods. Please talk to you health care provider to discuss options and never take the answer “Its Normal” when it comes to reflux and your baby. It’s not normal! As I have mentioned before, looking at feeding routines, tongue tie, latching challenges and sleep, all have an impact on your baby’s reflux. #baby #babysleep #babyreflux #babysleeproutine #babysleepcoach #babysleeptips #newbornbaby #newborns #newborntummy #cryingbaby #breastfeeding #breastfedbaby (at London, United Kingdom) https://www.instagram.com/p/Chh4OM3MdDG/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

how to handle upset stomach after a binge and when restricting or fasting.
[TW: eating disorders, laxatives, restricting, fasting, binging, emetophobia]
as someone with 3 digestive conditions, a relapse always manages to screw up my digestion and overall comfort. I'm sure that there are others who feel that sentiment strongly, so I'm gonna share some of what works for me.
general upper digestive system issues (heartburn, acid reflux, nausea, etc.): antacids are my go-to medicine. however, they come in a lot more forms than you might realize! if your symptoms are minor, regular tums will work just fine.
i also like to use alka-seltzer tablets mixed with water, mostly because the fizziness combined with the medicine really helps settle my stomach. (hint: if the taste of regular alka-seltzer is too gross for you to handle, put some lemon juice in there. lemon is a natural anti-nausea agent. even smelling a lemon takes my symptoms away sometimes.)
if you're terribly nauseous and don't want to vomit, the scent of rubbing alcohol helps, as does peppermint oil. if you're in public, it's nearly impossible to gag while humming or clenching your left thumb tightly in your fist.
if you have nausea associated with acid reflux, skip the ginger. ginger tends to make that a lot worse **when ingested**. However, smelling or topically applying ginger oil does help considerably.
for acid reflux, sleeping with your head elevated is a good idea. during the day, there are a bunch of OTC medicines that help. There are some purple capsules called Prilosec OTC, and the active ingredient is Omeprazole. They work like a charm and are usually inexpensive. I would always suggest capsules over tablets for acid reflux because tablets tend to make the back of your throat feel like it's on fire the second they hit the acid that's already there. 10/10 would not recommend. also, if you're gonna get non-gummy chewable antacids, please drink a bit of water before you take them. acid reflux can make your mouth feel dry and antacids combined with a dry mouth feels disgusting.
if it isn't reflux, ginger comes in many different forms. I find that anything that allows me to taste and smell the ginger as I ingest it helps a lot. ginger drops are good, but usually don't give long-lasting relief. ginger tea is better because it allows for you to sip with each wave of nausea and settles your stomach. ginger capsules are good if you're okay with waiting 30 minutes for them to kick in.
upper digestive issues after a binge: for me, the worst thing i felt when i habitually binged was the nausea. usually, the reflux got better when I binged and worse when I went back to restricting.
for nausea after a binge, Nauzene tablets are a lifesaver. they look DISGUSTING. they taste DISGUSTING. they work within 4 minutes. they're worth it.
emetrol is a liquid version of Nauzene, essentially, and it is NOT WORTH IT. it works within 15 minutes and wears off almost as fast. and it tastes like absolute horseshit. thats a hard pass for me.
i wouldn't suggest antacid tablets after a binge because you need to drink water with them, and drinking water after a binge makes you feel bloated, in my experience. gummy antacids, however, are a lifesaver. I would not recommend gummy antacids with a hard shell on the outside. they taste and feel chalky.
upper digestive issues during restriction or fasting: tea is a life-saver for heartburn and nausea while restricting and fasting. if calories concern you, drink with an ASPARTAME-FREE 0 calorie sweetener. I recommend Stevia. chamomile, peppermint, and lemon lavender are my personal upper GI go-to teas. just about any tea will work, though I would suggest avoiding citrus or cinnamon.
if it's night-time and your symptoms are severe, boy do i have a reccomendation for you: alka seltzer brand mixed-berry flavored gummy antacids with melatonin. these bitches will have you heartburn and nausea free within 10 minutes, and if they don't? that's okay, your ass will be KNOCKED OUT before you can even complain. these are especially helpful for getting through a fast, because sometimes, the best thing you can do for comfort is sleep it off. plus, they're sweet, and they have an added benefit of helping with low blood sugar and dizziness from fasting and restricting.
for lower body digestive system issues (bloating, diarrhea, constipation, pain) in general: when you're bloated, anything minty will usually help. peppermint or spearmint leaves (just chew them), a LOW DOSE (1 or 2 drops) of peppermint oil mixed into tea, etc.
for diarrhea, my best reccomendation would be to NOT TAKE AN ANTI-DIARRHEAL. unless you want to not shit for 4 days while feeling like you need to every few minutes, that's a nope from me, dog. nah, instead, I would suggest eating mild food. the BRAT diet is always my go to: Banana, Rice, Apples, Toast. A bonus is that those are all generally "safe" foods. they tend to be bland and easy to digest, which makes the loose stool stop sooner. also, make sure you're drinking enough water, because dehydration is the main reason why loose stools have killed people in the past. don't drink a ton of water at once, though. space it out throughout the day.
also, normal Pepto Bismol liquid is my favorite for bringing diarrhea to a stop without causing constipation. I would suggest keeping a big bottle of it in the fridge if you're prone to loose stools. I personally find Pepto Bismol tablets to be ineffective in handling symptoms as quickly as the liquid. the liquid coats your esophagus and stomach, which helps with upper GI symptoms too. DO NOT USE CHERRY FLAVORED PEPTO BISMOL unless it is literally your last option, because it tastes HORRID and you will never forget the taste. it will enter your nightmares and pervade your senses when least expected. you think I'm being dramatic, but I promise you, you would regret it.
for constipation, do not take a ton of laxatives. the last thing you need on top of all this mess is an accidental laxative addiction. laxatives don't do shit for weight loss, and they get your body dependent on outside help for digestion. don't even start it.
one stool softening pill is fine. if it doesn't work, don't try and jumpstart the process. instead, take the RECCOMENDED AMOUNT of a fiber powder, or eat some foods high in fiber (these tend to be low-calorie). a quick google search should bring up a list of high-fiber foods.
for abdominal pain, I recommend heat in some form. a hot bath, a heating pad, a hot water bottle. if you're out in public, there are these portable heat patches that you can buy in a four-pack. they're used more often for joint pain, but they help a lot if your stick 'em on your tummy too. if you are a person who gets periods, these help with cramps too, just as a side note. DO NOT USE HEAT PATCHES WITH CAPSAICIN IN THEM. THEY WILL BURN YOU. I don't just mean you'll feel a burning sensation, I mean that I left one of those on my stomach for maybe 10 minutes and sustained a first degree burn from it. nothing makes stomach pain worse like adding another layer of pain to contend with.
If you're restricting at any level, DON'T TAKE PAIN MEDICINE FOR ABDOMINAL PAIN OR ANY PAIN PLEASE I BEG OF YOU it'll make you so nauseous and it's honestly the quickest way to get an ulcer.
kaopectate is great for lower digestive issues but for the love of all things good keep it in the fridge and don't get the vanilla kind. the taste of warm vanilla kaopectate is beyond horrid. not as bad as cherry Pepto, but close.
Imodium pills are usually pretty helpful too. Kaopectate works better for me, but I'd try both to see which one is most helpful for you personally. In terms of overall effectiveness, they're equal, but Kaopectate works faster.
Final notes:
1. I am not encouraging anyone to develop an ED in these tips. I'm just trying to help people feel better. having an ED doesn't mean you don't deserve basic comfort and symptom relief.
2. if you have dogs or kids running around, do NOT let them get ahold of any minty essential oils. peppermint, eucalyptus, spearmint, etc. will all cause children and pets severe breathing problems. kids have died from smelling peppermint oil. don't use essential oil diffusers at all with kids in the general vicinity.
3. I am not a doctor. I'm a sick person with way too much time on my hands and a severe illness phobia. please don't take my word as law. if a certain medicine works better for you, cool! I'm just giving my personal experiences and trying to help y'all avoid the medicine mistakes I've made. also, if you're on prescription meds, ask your doctor before taking other OTC meds.
4. eating disorders suck. these symptoms that we have to deal with because of them suck. if you are in the initial stages of an ED and you're reading this, get help. if you're in the late stages, get help. it is never too early or too late to get help. no good therapist or doctor will ever tell you to come back when your symptoms are worse, and if they do, they need to have their license revoked. the mere presence of eating disordered ideation or intent is enough to merit treatment. if you think it's too late, it's never too late until you're dead. don't let it get that far, please. you can be happy. you can be healthy. you deserve to be happy and healthy and alive. you deserve to thrive. you deserve to be okay.
i love you all. if you ever need ANYTHING, I'm one message away. i hope y'all feel better soon. 💞
