I used to think I’ve never related to the “I think I know more about american girl dolls than you do genius” meme but then I remembered the truly insufferable man who worked at my local record shop and acted like I knew nothing about anything when I had been going there longer than he had.

Ok, but why do I imagine Eight being the unofficial child of Pearl x Marina?

Because I imagine Eight was minding their business and all of a sudden, Pearl would slam the paper down and said “You’re adopted now”

Basically OTH at the start of their world tour haha, I love that they took Eight with them.

I have more detailed thoughts under the cut for those interested in my ramblings, analysis and interpretations of the characters.

Disclaimer: This is my own take on it, don’t let it ruin your fun!

I personally don’t really subscribe to the fandom’s ‘pearlina moms’ headcanon.

On the one hand, I am an absolute sucker for the ‘found family’ trope, and I definitely think Agent 8 and OTH fit in it!

On the other hand, I think people immediately put Pearl and Marina into the ‘parenthood’ box, a little too eagerly. Not saying this specific ask is that, btw, it just reminded me of some instances i’ve seen.

I personally think that the relationship between OTH and Agent 8 is a little more nuanced & sibling-esque, for the following reasons:

1. Within canon, we often see 8 being referred to as a friend by both Pearl and Marina.

Pearl does it more explicitly (see that one interview at her house), whereas with Marina it’s more insinuated (ex. In the Side Order dev diaries, she starts calling Agent 8 as ‘Eight’, which is stated to be a name used by their friends).

Pearl seems to be an accidental-duck-parent of sorts who haphazardly collects octoling teenagers & young musical talent. It goes in line with her whole mentor-esque leader personality, and i’m sure these disoriented teens find relief in an idol who seemingly knows what she’s doing (she really doesn’t).

However she doesn’t act in a parental manner. More-so like your estranged gay cousin who hit it big in another country and is down to show your queer little butt the ropes.

Marina on the other hand seems to have a more empathetic approach with Agent 8 (opposite to Pearl’s brashness). Marina clearly connects with Agent 8 through their shared experience as defected octoling soldiers, and probably sees her younger self in them. She’s already caring as it is, but this is accentuated during octo expansion given the circumstances.

I feel however that, unlike Pearl, Marina has a bit of a harder time actually forming a bond with Eight at the beginning. Their similarities (seemingly) end at their shared experience, and probably leaves Marina awkwardly wondering how to approach them further. What we can assume though is that they become closer friends during OTH’s world tour, given the events described in the Memverse Dev Diaries.

Meeting Eight during difficult circumstances (OE) and helping them get out creates a sense of camaraderie between them, which probably devolves into genuine care, established friendship and a strong bond amongst the three overtime.

2. Pearl and Marina are very career-centric both in Splat 2 and 3.

It is reasonable that the two young idols, who see their fame and musical recognition rise spectacularly & fast, are not particularly interested in settling down at this point in their lives.

Now entering her late 20s, Pearl is most definitely still interested in keeping the ball rolling with Off the Hook’s international success. Her character often points towards restlessness, freedom and discovery. There has definitely been character development in regards to her maturity in Splatoon 3, but these aforementioned traits are still ever present in her demeanour & decision-making.

Marina on the other hand can be seen slowly blossoming from a supporting character to being her own person. She definitely develops more self-confidence by Splatoon 3, but is still naturally bashful. It’s clear that she is allowing herself to explore & open up to new things for her own sake. She remains a caring and somewhat nurturing individual, but she is at a stage where she’s learning to live for herself and not for others.

Parenthood (and all the responsibilities and sacrifices it entails) at this moment of their lives would probably freak Pearl out, and stunt Marina’s personal growth.

3. The age gaps between OTH and Agent 8 are too close for it to create a parent/kid bond.

This makes their relationship a little hazy in regards to roles; 8 is still young enough that they may seek out rolemodels and mentors (still relatively influenceable), but they’re also nearing their 20s. By this point they are fairly self sufficient, have a sense of their personal values & identity, and they are relatively responsible & mature.

Pearl and Marina are 8’s seniors by approximately 4-6 years. However, in Splatoon 2 they’re entering their early 20s and their career has just begun to take off.

They are both still relatively youngsters, albeit older & more mature(? glancing at Pearl) youngsters than 8. This places them in a position where they can guide 8 and offer certain support and resources, but lack the maturity and experience of a full-fledged adult. This would approximate their relationship closer to that of siblings in a family setting.

Pearl & Marina are also less likely to feel a duty towards Eight as an adult would with a child. Instead, the latter’s circumstances are more likely to incite feelings of rapport and compassion as a fellow young inkfish.

Now, with all of this said, I will acknowledge that friendship/found family is MUCH more nuanced than a strict binary.

From personal experience in my last years of college, I did find myself caring for my fellow freshmen as though they were my kids, in certain ways. Hell, I called them my kids.

I acted as a proud parent whenever some of them achieved something, attempted to pass down my knowledge to them, and was protective of them to a certain extent.

They also annoyed me sometimes, like younger people do haha. And i’m sure I annoyed them too!

So I wouldn’t put it past OTH to call Eight their kid and have this mentor/parent-esque rapport with them in certain circumstances.

This is all based both on canon & my own interpretations of it, but still closely aligned to what has been shown in-game.

So if you have a different interpretation of Agent 8 and OTH, that’s great! I love to see people’s personal headcanons. Ultimately, Agent 8 is meant to be somewhat of a blank slate for the players to mold, with some hinted-at personality traits of their own.

As long as you have fun with these characters, that’s all that matters. This is just my personal opinion on their relationship in-game.

rules: list your top 9 books obviously. like the people before me and probably most people who did this i cheated and put series or several books by the same author as one thing bc rules are made for breaking <3 this is very much both an 'off the top of my head' as well as a 'laboured over this for hours' kind of list that's heavily biased to the present moment.

(1.) all for the game by nora sakavic; i don't even know what to say about this. either you read it and Get why this is on my list or you Don't. and if you haven't read it this is not a recommendation btw. this is just me saying these books did irreparable damage to my developing teenage brain. hit me like no other series probably ever will again because i read this at the Right Time while being the exact right amount of Insane. and just like seed mentioned in her list if you want to know Me and Understand Me then you need to know this series. i am sure there are traces of it in my dna by now.

(2.) the raven cycle by maggie stiefvater; same goes for this one tbh. if you want to know Me and Understand Me then you need to know this series. another instance of Right Time and Right Me. these books burrowed themselves deep into my bones and became a part of my dna. they shaped soo much of my taste in prose, storytelling techniques, tropes, and dynamics. this story and these characters took me apart and put me back together again but rearranged some essential parts inside of me. much like with aftg, i came out of this series irreversibly changed and drenched in blood final girl style.

(3.) frankenstein by mary shelley; a beautifully written story with soooo much room for whatever literary lens you want to apply to it. i know i answered an ask once where i talked about my love for this book in detail but i can't find it. but i found this rant on frankenstein and the creature. i think a lot of my love for this story comes from the fact that i had the chance to work closely with the text several times. but also it's just a heart-wrenching tale about how we define humanity and how love is essential nourishment for the soul. it reminds me of that one quote from the good place: "people improve when they get external love and support. how can we hold it against them when they don’t?" because frankenstein basically answers the question what happens when someone gives you a life you didn't ask for and then opts out of any (emotional) responsibility and leaves you desolate and utterly forsaken.

(4.) the green bone saga by fonda lee; an epic family saga i still think about A Lot. kinda succession without logan but make it fantasy mafia. sibling relationships are a big part of this story too. which if you know me. big fan of that. it's also a series that grows in scope (world building wise) and keeps adding complexity So Naturally it's impressive. amazing storytelling craft at work fr. definitely an underhyped series in my opinion.

(5.) the sword of kaigen by m.l. wang; another fantasy story focusing on family dynamics but also functioning as a character study. it's a self-published work and it shows in the BEST way. there's just something about it that makes me insane one a storytelling level because it breaks so many conventions and you either hate that or love that but no matter your opinion on it i think it's undeniable that this book has some of the best character work written in recent years. i desperately need to reread.

(6.) on earth we’re briefly gorgeous by ocean vuong; another book that fucked me up with its beautiful prose and incredibly gut-wrenching emotional honesty. it really feels like you're reading about someone ripping out the most vulnerable and messed up and complex parts of their soul and laying them bare for you to see expecting nothing but acknowledgement in return. and while my own lived experience is nothing close to ocean vuong's the emotional core of this book rings so true. also i just have to say it again. the prose fucks severely.

(7.) the grisha trilogy & the six of crows duology by leigh bardugo; another (two) series i read in my teens that shaped my taste to a drastic degree. the crows are just forever ingrained in my brain. alina's story will forever fuck me up. you all know. you all understand. w're not getting into it. i think the fact that tgt is so misunderstood and undervalued just makes me love it more. because if you get it. damn. devastating. if you don't. so sorry for you because you're missing out.

(8.) the song of achilles & circe by madeline miller; tbh both of these retellings did something to my brain. you all know these i don't have to elaborate. it's very typical queer of me to fawn over anything to do with greek mythology and retellings but. these two just HIT different. also, the prose? makes me a little insane.

(9.) giovanni’s room by james baldwin; this book has some of the most insane prose i have ever read. baldwin's grasp on language is uncanny fr. every other sentence packs a punch in one way or another. he manages to capture some aspects of the queer (specifically the bi) experience in a way that felt so familiar to me and put words to so many of my internal experiences. it's about the self and identity and being lost and refusing to let yourself be found. it's also about human connections and how you'll wither when you deny yourself to open up to the people closest to you. it's about so many things without being about one think in particular. like all the other books on this list, love and belonging are at the core of it, but in a very distorted way. i don't think you can really understand unless you've read it. it's So Good.

honorable mentions; emma by jane austen (cunty women RULE), wuthering heights by emily brontë (severely fucked up in the most entertaining way. that's how you write drama.) east of eden by john steinbeck (cain and abel shit and deranged women? sign me up), these violent delights by micah nemerever (be gay do crime in the most mentally ill way possible), if we were villains (love it when characters haunt a narrative. also definitely a book about the gay sex that is not happening), women in love by d.h. lawrence (still currently making my way through this one but it's so deliciously messed up and queer i am almost certain it will leave a permanent mark)

about rocky and lola

(ahoy! oc x canon/self ship ahead! also, walls of text)

some of you guys wanted to know more about my oc, so here you are!

i would also like to preface this by saying: i am not an immigrant. while i am of italian descent, there are things in here that i cannot relate to because i was born in the us. please let me know if my oc is a gross representation of immigrants. i would feel awful if my character offended or misrepresented anybody. i won't be upset, i promise. please let me know

before lola met rocky:

lola immigrated from italy to the united states in 1912, due to the rise of crime and poverty. while i would also say fascism too, but mussolini didn't start his regime until the early 1920's.

she immigrated with her father and paternal grandmother. they would move around a lot while her father scrambled to find work. they finally settled in saint charles, missouri. her father worked several jobs to stay afloat.

while lola doesn't have many memories with her father, she knew that he was doing his best as a single dad who only knew so much english.

the few things that her father and her would do when he wasn't busy, is play guitar- which is how she got into playing music. (this is important to her adulthood btw- put a pin in it)

they lived a few houses down from the mcmurray household.

during that time, lola really locked down on learning english. her nonna was more like a drill sergeant when it came to teaching her granddaughter a different language. in some instances, she'd wake lola up in the middle of the night for quizzes. lola wouldn't say anything about it though. you don't talk back to nonna.

lola would also do insane amount of chores for nonna, and she'd take advantage of this full force.

this might make it seem like her nonna was uncaring and cruel, she really wasn't. she is more of a cool disney grandma than anything else. she's just looking out for her granddaughter the best way she knows how.

after lola met rocky:

after a while, rocky and lola bumped into each other when they were 11 and became friends.

'bumped into each other' is a cuter way of describing their first interaction. in reality, lola found rocky stuck in a bush and helped him out. it was awkward. but they warmed up to each other!

lola understood most english, however didn't understand rocky's grandiloquent way of speaking.

while rocky wanted to be courteous and speak in a way easier for her to understand, lola wouldn't allow him too. she wanted him be himself. that, and she also didn't want to be 'dumbed down' in a sense. she wanted to understand more english, and was adamant about it.

rocky inadvertently helped her with a lot of vocabulary, simply just listening to him and and asking him questions if she couldn't put the pieces together.

this also made her love his poetry, especially when they became teenagers.

rocky enjoyed listening to her speak in italian. with his fondness of romanticism and the renaissance period, he thoroughly enjoyed just listening to lola. it would be his very few instances of calmness.

he also thought her accent was adorable (who can blame him though? children speaking in italian is really cute)

music is when rocky and lola had the most fun. they would play music for hours, teach each other how to play their instruments, create instruments with glasses and cartons.

they were both just shining balls of creativity, and being together sparked it even more

( a little side note, but i headcanon rocky as an ENFP, and lola as an INFP )

rocky was, of course, much more adventurous. he'd drag lola into situations all the time. this would get her into a lot of trouble depending on how dangerous the 'adventure' was.

lola never got angry at him however. if anything, she was glad it happened.

there were only a few instances were lola ever raised her voice at rocky, but they were for good reasons.

lola was iffy about aunt nina. while she tried to understand why she acted the way she did, she just never understood her disdain towards rocky.

lola never disliked nina, she was very nice to her when she was by herself. but she also didn't like her in a way either.

rocky never opened up about his past until later in life, so she didn't know much about why he didn't have parents or why he was living with his aunt's. and frankly, she didn't want to pry.

lola knew, in a small way, what it was like to not be raised by your parents, so she didn't want to make him feel anymore alienated than he already did by asking questions.

she just understood, and rocky appreciated her so much for that.

for a brief synopsis of their childhood friendship: rocky helped lola come out of her shell and take risks, while lola helped rocky enjoy the littler things in life and taking things slow.

i'll talk about their relationship as teenagers in a later post, because this one is just so long as it is.

so here's a question about Polish diminutive naming:

i know that in Russian, every name has a pet name. For instance Dmitri being Mitya.

Is this true for Polish names too?

If so, what is the diminutive form for the name "Maxim" or "Maksim"?

Oho, that's interesting! So the short answer is yes, every name has a pet name. A couple of pet names, actually. (Btw the Polish version of Maxim is Maksym).

For male names, the most typical endings are -uś (-yś, -eś and all the variations depend on the name, so it's good to google it. you know, just put "maksymuś" in google and check out if anything shows up) and -sio (which both are usually more... loving? you'd usually use them for children and people you love. using them for friends isn't technically wrong but some people may not like that) and -ek (which is usually a bit more serious but that depends on the name. for example pet name of Krzysztof (Christopher) - Krzysiek is a bit hard on the tongue and makes it sound like a bit older person, maybe a teenager but pet name of Maksym - Maksymek is smooth and makes it sound like a child).

So your options for Maksym are: Maksymuś, Maksymek (both sound pretty child-like), Maks (which, I believe, came from English Max but is very popular nowadays) and from Maks you can create Maksio (which is again a bit child-like) or Maksyś.

Personally, I would use them like that: parents call them Maksymek, friends call him Maks and sometimes Maksio/Maksyś, their partner call them Maksio/Maksyś.

Now I'm not sure if you want to read about female names but oh well, I'm doing it anyway.

Now about -yś. So, you can see that -yś doesn't end with "a" like most of the Polish female names (seriously, there are maybe like 5 or 6 that don't end with "a") which makes it basically... a gender neutral ending. Sadly, it doesn't work with every name. But it works with Maria and Marian (male version of Mary)! "Maryś" can be a pet name for both. And it works for Maksym and Maksyma too! Mentioned earlier Maksyś works for both!

Lastly, giving nicknames is also extremely common in Poland. The most popular ways of giving them are: from the surname (Kowalski -> Kowal, cutting out the surname ending), from a visual trait (Rudy (Ginger), Wysoki (Tall)), just straight up another name for whatever reason (it doesn't even need to sound similar, often people just call others by... a different name...) and ofc pop culture references.

Hi, it kind of came out of nowhere but do you think that Marvus's music would be actually good ? Like I can't imagine some 14-15 yo kid, supported and working for other kids, being professional (not that teenagers can't be great artists, but in the context of Alternia it's just different). It just kind of cracks me up if IRL he really made shitty mixtapes that hypes everyone up lmao and Teals would just work as some weird ambassador for purples/artists that resolve teenage drama haha

What do you think ? Do they have enough cultural background to compose things for themselves or Condy gave them just enough space but not quite so things can't evolve?

This ask got me deep diving haha. I'll get to some more, long, rambling headcanons under the cut, but here's the short of it:

Canon tells us he has a huge, cult like following, so his music is likely "good" (which is subjective, but we'll get to that later).

He already had a background (loosely speaking) in entertainement before he got famous by being a contestent on Slam or Get Culled (which keeps him relevant; most contestant series bing back previous winners, so he's very present in the entertainment sphere). In my opinion (and this is entering headcanon territory), this means he's had plenty of relevant training regarding... hmm how to put this. Finding and keeping an audience? Putting on the entertainer's face and saying the right words? Public relations stuff, you know? Does that makes sense? This does imply that his music is somewhat commercial and easy to sell, however (although I choose not to headcanon that. Popular fanon and I agree on one thing: I like the idea that his music is kinda silly yet clever with excellent samples a la young gravy).

The idea of teals being the auspictices between the music/ entertainment industry and like, just the general population is a super fun world building element haha! I love that. I've always seen certain castes being culturally predisposed towards certain quadrants, and teals have always read as ashen-predisposed to me. Might be the neurodivergence speaking, though, haha.

That being said, the entertainment industry- both on earth in real life so likely on Alternia- is the forefront of propaganda. And while Marvus styles himself as a musician, he's actually somewhat more of a politician.

Before I deep dive under the cut, the TL;DR is: imagine if Hatsune Miku worked for, idk, the CIA. That's... kind of how I see Marvus lmfao (although not a super literal parallel obviously; I don't think Marvus works for anyone beside himself). I'm at work so this post is pretty rushed, but hopefully you can get my jist.

So here's the thing that has always stuck out to me: Marvus and the music industry are kind of one in the same, you know? Made to get stuck in your head haha.

This puts him in a very powerful political position. It's noted in his friendsim that his music is "super woke and definitely not casteist at all." As MSPAR attended that concert with Zebruh, it's important to note that weirdo castists were on their mind. To me, this says that Marvus's music is so open for interpretation that people will always hear exactly what they want.

(I know the popular opinion is just that he's psychic pulling psychic fuckery, but honestly that's no fun for me. Marvus is very intelligent and conniving, and I'd prefer to deep dive into that.)

You know what Marvus has that most seadwellers don't? An audience, an opinion, and the means to make it all happen.

I think it's worth noting that when I say "politician" on Alternia, it's honestly more like an influencer? Cridea, for instance, strikes me as someone with a political agenda and political pull (and I don't think it's a coincidence at all that they're linked in act 2). They are, after all, young adults at best (I see Marvus as 19 on Alternia).

Do I think Marvus went into the inustry with politics on his mind? No, not at all. He was- in my headcanon- just a sixteen year old kid with no delusions of grandeur at all. He simply was that good.

The only problem is that he doesn't really hve anyone he's working for. He's religious (canonically, and imo to an extent), so it's very possible all of his power plays and messages have a subtle religious tie-in. Mostly, though, I think he's in it for himself. Mirthful Idolotry: he's an idol. This isn't sustainable in the long run, though, so I always wonder about what might cause his downfall in the future.

I think he's intelligent enough to come up with clever word play, and frankly there's the caste element as well.

Anyway. Because politics are involved, I'd be shocked if off-world trolls (trolls who are like Tirona for instance) aren't involved in the effort.

one of the things that radicalized me was when I called out a fanfic writer’s sexism (admittedly, I vagueposted until people figured out who I was talking about) and people not only snitched to her, but the person laughed about being called out for misogyny and is still considered a really nice person (who didn’t seem to care that her fans were harassing me about it).

the way she wrote said character, btw— portrayed her as irrationally emotional, described her voice as shrill IN MULTIPLE INSTANCES, the only thing she and her sister-in-law could agree on was that they were both fond of a boy, and in one fic was just straight-up character bashing. had the character do something selfish to showcase how she was bad and in the wrong, and why her brother trusts two teenagers he just met over her. In said fic, someone called out her “behaviour” and she couldn’t even form a sentence in her own defense. Her brother had to defend her.

I literally felt so insane, because everyone was telling me no, that’s not misogynistic! also you’re a crazy b**** and you should jump off a bridge.

maybe a lame thing to have helped radicalize me but it really showcased how grossly prevalent misogyny is, even in spaces that are supposed to be safe from it.

If you want to read a long ass inner monologue about Hawkeye and leo though, I’ll stick it under the read more line - I want to preface this by saying these are unpopular opinions and if you don’t agree it’s totally fine! I just started thinking about it (since I kinda thought of Leo as the “Hawkeye” in my MASH au) and now that I’ve seen the movie I guess I want to expound on things a little bit.

So the comparisons between Hawkeye and Rise Leo are pretty surface level for me. I think since I finally saw the Rise Movie my opinion has definitely changed a lot on whether Rise Leo is actually like Hawkeye. I’m probably going to make some people mad by dragging Hawkeye through the mud a little bit but hey that’s tumblr lol.

I actually Like the Character of Rise Leo more than I like Hawkeye. Are they both charismatic and flashy? Yes. Are they martyr coded a little bit and single minded when it comes to following their ideals? Also yes.

But I think that’s where the similarities end.

(Edit: came back and was thinking that I hope Present Rise Leo turns out different than Peepaw in the movie but I think that’s already happened since he made different choices. Ex Present Future Leo started utilizing his brothers strengths and listening to his team. Btw really liked the movie. Am I traumatized? Yes. Was it good? Also yes.)

One thing that I’m sure someone would notice upon watching Mash and seeing Hawkeye, is how destructive he actually is. On the surface level it’s “haha he’s drinking all the time and he’s angry about these young people dying and he’s coping with it the only way he knows how” and the audience isn’t expected to think about it because the story is told in a way that paints Hawkeye in a good light. Of course you’re suppose to like him. He’s Likeable! Isn’t he funny?

But Hawkeye has several instances where he proves he is not fit for command. And he’s perfectly honest about that, even when people try to put him in command he doesn’t want it, he does it in a flippant way because if he took things seriously he’d probably scream. He is not a leader. He is not the person I would want to depend on in a crisis. He is charismatic, but it’s mostly a smokescreen. He gets patient blinders on what make him a great surgeon, but there’s been several times where he’s considered putting his colleagues in danger and someone else has to be the voice of reason. I honestly think Hawkeye forgets sometimes that just because he’s a doctor doesn’t mean he’s safe.

I’m not saying Hawkeye lacks compassion. I think he’s very compassionate and I think he has deep bonds with his colleagues. I just also think he makes decisions that don’t fully take those colleagues into consideration.

Now, push all that aside and place it in a box, and remember that what makes Hawkeye such a great character is how dimensional he is. That no one is perfect. That if you have a perfect character in media it’s probably not a very well fleshed out character.

Rise Leo on the other hand IS fit for command, he just took a while to get there, because he’s a teenage mutant ninja turtle lol. I imagine in the Bad Future he had to grow up pretty quickly, learn how to make hard calls and even how to navigate bad calls.

I guess the reason why I say the similarities between Hawkeye and Rise Leo are surface level is because their similarities are their masks, their coping mechanisms. If you peeled back the layers and looked at their actions, that’s when you would start noticing a marked difference. I would trust Rise Leo in a bad situation in a heartbeat. With Hawkeye I’d be afraid of the outcome.

I guess another way of saying that is Rise Leo is a goober because it’s almost a sleight of hand, a look at my I’m so goofy don’t take me seriously please don’t take me seriously I can’t take the stress of you taking me seriously.

And Hawkeye is a goober because if he stopped moving for a second two long he might snap. Because being a goober is how he keeps the spotlight on the parts of him he wants you to see, so he won’t have to explain why he’s hanging on by a thread.

The womanizing though. I could see Leo going through partners until he meets the right one and realizes he’s got to clean up his act. Hawkeye, hey at least he’s not married (stares into the side of Henry Blake and Trapper John’s heads until they spontaneously combust)

I’ve been wanting to do a visual representation of my bisexuality for a while, so here’s a piece to reflect my feelings regarding attraction and gender! 

I’m gonna go a little bit more into the meaning of this piece here, as well as a little bit of my creative process! 

so my mum recently brought back some purple and pink ball point pens that the school she works at were throwing out (despite the fact they still work perfectly well smh...) & I figured they’d be perfect for me doing some kind of bi pride themed artwork! 

below was my initial sketch btw! I knew I wanted 3 heads each in one of the 3 colours of the bi flag, and I knew I wanted them to sort of blend into one another, although I think I originally was planning to have them be more in the order of the flag (but I like my final piece and how it looks like the purple figure is coming out of the pink and blue figures!) 

after this I went to my tumblr likes (since that’s where I keep a whole load of inspirational stuff in a disorganised pile lol...) to see if I could find some useful references of faces, cos although I didn’t really want the faces to be of anyone, I still wanted to have a base so they at least felt some what realistic lol

I settled on these three (photoshoot of luca marinelli by tony zecchinelli, kai isaiah jamal for CAP 74024 new romantic obsessions and promo shots of zhu zanjin for the c-drama mystic nine) since I felt all of them had a strong sense of genderfluidity which I wanted for this piece! 

I followed the meaning of the bi flag colours (blue for different gender attraction, pink for same/similar gender and purple for attraction regardless of gender).

the blue section is both a reflection of my own sense of masculinity and my attraction to men/masc people! harsh lines, angles and logic are usually associated with masculinity, so I wanted to include that but with the idea that it isn’t always neat lines or angles, showing the many forms that masculinity can take! 

also did this for the pink section, which is a reflection of my femininity and attraction to women/fem people, which is usually connected to curved shapes, which I made more ‘me’ by amping up the chaos lol... also made them kinda look like cells and wheels, suggesting a kind of fluidity and movement that comes with my feelings of femininity. 

the pink with blue question marks in the blue figure’s eye was me expressing that feeling of confusion that comes with growing up bisexual, and having to come to terms with your attraction to both the opposite and same genders (it’s also to reflect how a lot of people claim that bisexual people are ‘confused’, or even the phrase ‘bi curious’, as if the very existence of bisexuality is something that should be questioned and critiqued... I think it’s honestly this attitude that meant it took me a long time to truly realise and appreciate my sexuality, since I kept believing I had to somehow explain myself again and again... something I still feel the need to do, which was partly why I wanted to make this piece, as a sort of signal to others AND myself that this is who I am and I’m PROUD of that!)

the purple section is more about my concept of genderfluidity, which I represented with a character from chinese opera called a ‘dan’, which was a female character that traditionally was performed by male performers dressed in what is essentially drag (xiran jay zhao did an awesome video where they recreated one of the looks and discussed the history of the character which is really interesting!) drag is something that intrigues me, especially in the way it emulates a purposeful performance of gender, which as a nb person feels particularly interesting to me! 

(also, a lot of my childhood and teenage yrs had a lot of instances with me experiencing ‘drag’ like things in places such as pantomimes, music videos and films (shout out to borstal boy for dressing danny dyer as a woman in that one scene that did SO much for me as a young queer kid ngl lol), so it’s something that I intrinsically link to my sense of identity even if I’ve never actually tried doing drag myself lol)

I used triangles as the motif for the purple section because triangles just feel really genderfluid to me idk I can’t explain it lol (maybe it’s because I used to think love triangles were when three characters had feelings for each other pfft...)

although this is of course a very personal piece, I hope anyone who sees it and is bi feels some of the meaning I poured into it! everyone’s experiences with their gender and sexuality are individual, but there’s a feeling of joy and pride that I think is something we all feel once we’ve finally allowed ourselves to be comfortable with who we are <3

Re: "Growing out of an intended audience" anon

Ha! I actually have a similar experience of feeling weird while reading my old BL collection. Those are all books I bought as a teenager and now, 10+ years later, reading them gives me a toned down version of the the squicky feelings I've always gotten from seeing loli or shota stuff.

It does make me a bit sad to not be able to enjoy the stories I used to really love anymore, at least not in the same way I did back then, but I don't think it's necessarily an issue of shame or moral panic. I've simply turned from a teen uncomfortable with reading porn about characters younger than me into an adult uncomfortable with reading porn of underage characters. And I now very much enjoy reading about both college students or office workers in their late fifties, which is something I really couldn't stomach as a teen.

So anon, as long as we treat our character age preferences the same way we would our other squicks and don't judge other people who don't feel that way, I don't think we have to train ourselves to enjoy something the same way we used to.

I actually still read some of my old favorites from time to time, but I tend to skip over the explicit scenes and just enjoy the emotional ride and lovely artwork. Just like I can't watch my favorite children's shows with the same wonder I did as a kid but can still appreciate them for what they are and what did for me back then.

On a related note: Shoutout to the trio of 30-to-40-something women who wrote the coming-of-age series that defined the genre for me and also showed me the first instance of teenage sexuality in media ever and on top of that included the concept of "Yes, you can have a very nice, fully consensual first time with someone and still go through a messy, upsetting breakup later. Sometimes relationships don't last and that's okay." You kind of need the mature perspective of an adult to be able to write something like that.

Kim Gaon is an incredibly talented hacker...probably the best in Korea. He can hack into any network he wants without leaving a trace...and can also shut down networks if necessary (especially if he feels like the people behind the network are corrupt)

He never leaves a calling card or like a "name" so no one really knows who he is, save for one little girl named Elijah, who somehow hacks his computer camera/skype and is now talking with him face to face. Or screen to screen

Gaon freaks out because how the fuck did this kid find him and hack him and Elijah just laughs and teases him, saying that he's not the greatest hacker in Korea, she is

Gaon's then like...should you be talking to a stranger like this and Elijah's like "oh I hack people's web cameras all the time to see if they're really who they say they are". Gaon's a little bit more afraid of this teenager than he was a few seconds ago

Elijah then explains that she only accessed Gaon's web camera because she's lonely and wants someone to talk to because no one understands her hobbies and hacking...they just think she's weird and creepy for hacking into other people's servers, systems, networks, etc.

Gaon feels bad as he knows what it's like to be lonely so he decides to befriend Elijah and they talk almost every day. They get along quite well and Gaon notices that Elijah smiles a lot more than the first day he met her

Then one day a man walks into Elijah's room when she's on a call with Gaon and Gaon pauses because he doesn't know if the man is a family member or what but Elijah assures him that this is her uncle, Chief Judge Kang Yohan. Gaon blinks in surprise and Yohan greets him politely before he asks Elijah if she'd be willing to hack a network for him

Elijah nods before she looks at Gaon and soon both of them have their fingers flying over the keys, Yohan watching with a raised eyebrow as they work. Soon they have what he's looking for and Yohan hums before he thanks both of them and leaves

After that one instance, anytime Yohan needs some hacking done, he asks for both Elijah and Gaon's help because having two hackers is always better than one, in his opinion

And sometimes he stays, sometimes he doesn't because he's busy with other things. If he does, he asks Gaon about himself and how he met Elijah because you know, she's his only niece, she's practically his daughter, he's a little protective of her

Gaon just assures him that he's not a creep, it was Elijah who connected with him first. He does tell him a little about himself, but like...not everything. Since he doesn't know Yohan that well, he doesn't need to know everything

Over time, the three slowly become closer until one day when Gaon calls Elijah for their daily video calls, Elijah doesn't answer, Yohan does

"Kim Gaon"

"Sir? Is there something wrong?"

"It's Elijah. I think something happened to her"

Gaon frowns

"But Elijah doesn't...leave the house, right?"

Yohan huffs and pinches the bridge of his nose

"Normally she doesn't, but she was meeting up with some school friends that came to visit Korea so she wanted to hang out with them. I let her go but then when I came to pick her up, she wasn't where I dropped her off and she's not answering her phone"

Gaon nods before his fingers fly over his keyboard, searching for Elijah's location before he smiles and looks at Yohan

"I'll send her your location and meet you"

Yohan blinks in confusion before his phone buzzes and he looks at the location Gaon sent him as Gaon ends the video call

Gaon then gets ready, quickly changing his clothes into something nice and brushing his hair before he heads out, catching a cab to the location he sent Yohan

When he arrives at the park, he finds a black Escalade waiting in the parking lot and the minute he gets out of the cab, Yohan steps out of the Escalade and walks over to him, eyeing him up and down

"It's nice to meet you in the flesh, Kim Gaon"

"I could say the same thing about you, Kang Yohan"

Yohan chuckles before he huffs

"Where's Elijah?"

Gaon smiles before he motions for Yohan to follow him as they head through the park until they find Elijah laughing with a few of her friends that she made from school

Gaon then looks over at Yohan and smirks

"See? She's perfectly fine"

Yohan huffs before he walks over to Elijah, Gaon following him, as Elijah turns and smiles at them

"Yohan!" *sees Gaon in person* "GAON!"

She then wheels over to Gaon and hugs him tightly, Gaon laughing as he pets her hair

"Hello Elijah"

Elijah then pulls away as she looks up at him

"I've always wanted to hug you and now I can!"

Gaon laughs and gives her another hug as Yohan watches them with a fond look on his face. When Gaon and Elijah pull away again, Gaon smiles

"Take your time. Your uncle and I won't be too far away, k?"

Elijah nods and lets go of Gaon as she turns and wheels back to her friends while Gaon takes Yohan's arm and guides him to a park bench that's not too far so that Elijah and her friends are within their sights

As both men sit and watch Elijah with her friends, Yohan looks over at Gaon, eying him up and down, causing Gaon to look back him with a raised eyebrow

"What?"

"Nothing. You're just much more handsome in person"

Gaon blushes and Yohan chuckles before they go back to watch Elijah laugh and have a good time with her friends

Weren't the Galaxy Team people stated to be refugees fleeing war and destruction at their home? I mean this as a genuine question btw. I thought this was a story about desperate refugees trying to make peace because they don't want to be kicked out by either clan. I thought a story about war refugees was rather accidentally topical, but that could have been my knowledge of current events shaping my interpretation of the story

No. Kamado's home village was destroyed by "rampaging pokémon," but we never learn the details of that and that was only him, Beni, and maybe a few other stragglers. War was never mentioned and the other members of the village just came to Hisui for various other reasons. They weren't war refugees, and while Kamado says over and over again that he wants Galaxy Team to live somewhere free of strife, it still doesn't excuse him looking down on the beliefs and practices of the indigenous people there (which he does because he hates pokémon because of the pokémon that destroyed his village), and it also leads him to literally want to kill any pokémon that he thinks poses a threat to him / his people, even if said pokémon aren't actually doing anything wrong:

Granted, I'm sure having your home village destroyed by a Gyarados or whatever is traumatizing, but that still doesn't excuse seeing a pokémon minding its own business in its native land (which YOU came to of your own accord), deciding that it's dangerous, and then opting to raise an army to kill it. Even in the case of the legendaries, they were just minding their own business on the other side of a wormhole. Kamado's lucky that N wasn't the one who came from Unova instead of Ingo or he would have had his ass beat for real. (He already would have had his ass beat by me if I had the option to throw hands in this game, but alas . . .)

Anyway, no, they weren't refugees, and while I understand how current events being on your mind might make you see that in the story, we can't ignore the very real history of the part of Japan that Hisui and Sinnoh are based on. Even if the developers at Game Freak wanted to make a "heroic refugees make a new home" story, that they chose to do so using fictional Hokkaido, when real Hokkaido was the site of imperialism, colonization, and cultural genocide by the Yamado Japanese . . . it's not a good look, to say the least. To be fair it would be really hard to find a currently existing region of the Pokémon world where something like that didn't happen (for instance, both Unova and Alola are off limits because of how Europeans colonized both the North American continent and the Kingdom of Hawai'i), but nonetheless. As a final note on that, there was never any indication that either the Diamond or Pearl Clans would have told Galaxy Team to gtfo. The clans had beef with each other, and even setting that aside, Pearl Clan welcomed Ingo with arms so wide open they straight up made him a Warden to one of their nobles despite how he appeared out of literally nowhere and was a full grown adult. Meanwhile, Galaxy Team looked at a teenager who fell from the sky and decided that they must be a threat, and then even after said teenager risks life and limb over and over and over again to help, Kamado is still so mistrustful and aggro that he banishes said teenager from the village, potentially to go die (especially since he didn't know that Cyllene was letting the teenager continue to have access to the pokémon that they caught). There's one group of xenophobic individuals in this game, and it's not the clans. And that being the case, that makes the view that the Galaxy Team are refugees seeking safe haven really not a good one either, because of what it implies about refugees who are seeking safe haven, and what they'll do once they get there.

there are definitely options for non-invasive/non-hormonal methods of birth control, and this isn’t something you want to leave until the last minute. if you haven’t already, talk to your gyno about it asap. make sure you let them know specifically that you intend to have unprotected sex, and super duper do not want to end up pregnant

Harrys Daughter Gets Her First Period

(Harry has 3 kids/Teddy age 5, Olivia age 8, and Darcy age 12)

Back story-

Harry was a single parent. Well his kids have a mum, but she's a famous actress in Hollywood, and she and Harry have been divorced for years now. While she's away from London filming a movie in Los Angeles, Harry has been keeping their three kids at his London home. He doesn't tour as much as he used to so he has a lot more free time on his hands. That means he can spend some quality time with his children. He loves it. He loves his kids with every fiber in his body. He regrets not being able to spend more time with them when they were younger, but being a popstar requires a lot of traveling. So unfortunately, he was on the road most of their childhood. Now in his late 30s, he stays home a lot more but of course he still writes and sings music. He just doesn't tour those songs unless its the occasional tv appearance here and there. Harry's kids love their father as well. They always have. They always understood his job and never had hard feeling towards him not being around. So when their mum told them they would be staying with Harry for a few mouths while she filmed a movie, they were super excited.

Current time-

It was currently six in the morning. Harrys alarm just went off letting him know its time to wake his kids up for school. He climbs out of his bed and makes his way to his master bathroom to pee and brush his teeth. Once finished, he makes his way down the hallway to where his kids rooms are. He first knocks and opens his youngest child Teddy's door asking him to wake up please. Then he goes to his middle child Olivia's room asking her to wake up for school. Lastly he goes to his oldest child Darcy's room who's 12 years old. Harry knocks on her door and steps inside. He hears what sounds like muffled cries.

"Darcy love, what's wrong?" Harry asked Darcy while taking a seat on the edge of her bed.

"My tummy really hurts dad." she replies.

"What kind of hurt love? Like pain hurt of sick hurt."

"I don't know. I don't feel as though I'm gonna be sick. It just hurts."

"Alright, you can stay home with me today. Once I get Teddy and Olivia ready for school, I'll give you some medicine. I'll call Jack my chauffeur and ask him to take them to school today so I don't have to leave you. Does that sound alright?"

"Yes thank you dad. Love you." Darcy says quietly.

"I love you to my love. Now get some rest and I'll be back in no time with some medicine for you to take." Harry speaks while laying a kiss to her forehead then exiting the room.

Harry gets Teddy all dressed in his uniform and helps him brush his hair and teeth. Then he does the same for Olivia. Once both kids are properly clothed, he goes down stairs to his kitchen and makes them a quick and easy breakfast. While they sit at the kitchen island eating their breakfast, Harry steps away to phone his chauffeur and ask if he could take his kids to school. (yes Harry has a chauffeur but he only uses him for emergencies or for formal events.) Jack agreed and said he would be at Harry's house in just a few minutes.

Jack the chauffeur came and picked up Teddy and Olivia to take them to school. Harry goes back into the kitchen to find some medicine for his daughter Darcy. He wasn't sure what kind of stomach ache she had. All he knew was that she said she didn't feel sick, so upset stomach medicine wasn't the best option for this instance. He just grabbed some generic pain medicine and a glass of water and headed back up to her room.

Waking up a sleeping Darcy, Harry sits on the edge of her bed handing her the pills and water and says, "Here Darcy. Take these and it should help your tummy pain. If not, I might need to take you to the doctors later."

She swallows the pills and replies back, "Thank you for the medicine dad."

"Its no problem sweetie. Just doing what a father does. Takes care of their sick child." Harry calmly states, "Also, I have to go into my studio room to write some songs with your Uncle Niall, so if you need anything , anything at all, please come get me."

"Will do."

Harry leaves Darcy's room and heads to go into his in home studio room to write some new songs with Niall, and Darcy tries to go back to sleep. Though it was difficult, she managed to fall back asleep for about an hour until she felt the urge to pee. She climbs out of bed and goes into her bathroom which is located in her bedroom. She pulls her pants and panties down like she normally would to sit on the toilet. Only this time she sees something different. Something her mum had told her about but she never really payed it any attention thinking she had a few more years to go before it came. Blood. She sees blood in her panties. That means she just got her period. Darcy still uses the toilet like normal, but when she wiped, the tissue was covered in blood. She felt like crying. How was she supposed to tell her dad that she just got her period. Men don't know anything about periods she thought and her mum was thousands of miles away so she is no help.

Darcy finishes using the toilet and makes her way down to her dad Harrys music studio room. Even from up stairs, she could hear her Uncle Niall's guitar echoing through the walls. She loves her Uncle Niall to pieces but what she's about to have to tell her dad, she wants it to be in private. Darcy approaches the door shyly and walks in.

"Umm dad, can I speak with you privately?" Darcy questions her dad.

"Of course." Harry said with a concerned face. "I'll be right back Niall."

Harry walks out of the studio room and into the hall where his daughter is standing.

"Yeah my love, what's wrong? Is your stomach still hurting?"

"Um yeah but I know why," Darcy says while not making eye contact due to her embarrassment, "I think I got my period. I went to the bathroom and there was blood in my panties. Also I accidently leaked a little on my bed."

"Come here," Harry says while wrapping his arms around his daughters body, "It's alright. I have just what you need. Follow me."

She's a bit confused as to why her dad would have period products at his house beings that he's single, but she doesn't think to much on it. Harry takes her into his bathroom and opens the cabinet under the sink. He takes out a mini bag that's got some pads and tampons inside.

"I made this for you knowing you'd get your period soon. There are some pads and tampons inside. But I think pads are better to start out with. Do you know how to use them?"

"I think so." she answers shyly and Harry can tell she's a bit embarrassed.

"Hey, look at me. There is no reason to be embarrassed. I might be your dad but I know quite a lot about periods. Did you forget I grew up with your gran and Gemma who both had periods each month. Not to mention, I was married to your mother for many years. Plus, periods are a good thing. Means you're a healthy, growing female. I'm going to step out while you get situated alright." he spits out.

Harry shuts the bathroom door to give his daughter some privacy and goes to find a heating pad he knows he has. Usually for when his back is hurting. Once he finds it, Harry plugs it in the wall socket by his bed. He figured she could lay down in his big king size bed while he washes her spoiled bedding. Just as he was plugging the heating pad up, Darcy opens the bathroom door.

"Alright, you can lay down in my bed if you want, and I got you a heating pad that should help you tummy pain. Is there anything else you need?" Harry asked Darcy.

"No I'm fine, but umm," Darcy stumbles on her words a bit, "could you maybe have a cuddle with me for a while. I mean when you get done with work that is."

"I'd love to. I'll be right back."

Darcy climbs into her fathers bed and Harry makes his way back to his music studio.

"Is everything alright?" Niall asks.

"Yep. She just got her first period and isn't feeling to well. Do you think we could cut this session up."

"Yeah of course mate." Niall replies back.

Niall gathers his things and heads out the front door and left out the security gates of Harry's home. Harry makes his way to his bedroom where he finds Darcy bundled up in his fluffy duvet sound asleep. He slips off his shoes and crawls in beside her fragile body. Then he scoots her body close to his so that her head is laying on his clothed tattooed chest. Harry runs his fingers in her hair and watches her peacefully sleep. About 10 minutes later, he finds himself dozing off with his daughter in his arms soundly.

Hope this was okay. I don't normally write fanfictions unless it has either Harrys wife or girlfriend as the reader but I made an exception for this request.

That's really random but I hate the Dean parentification that's so popular in this fandom and I wonder what your thoughts about it are

I fucking hate the dean parentification headcanon and how it's treated as irrefutabile canon by the fandom and how it's used as an excuse to justify dean's horrible treatment of sam (because apparently if you raised someone, you're allowed to do whatever you want to them and they're not allowed to say anything about it, as long as your name is dean winchester) and to dismiss sam's achievements and positive qualities as a result of dean's excellent parenting *gags*

let's see some examples of dean's a++++++++ parenting (btw I'm in no way blaming dean, at least not for his actions as a literal child. I just hate how the fandom ignores these things and glorifies dean as an unwavering caregiver, when he literally couldn't be, since he himself was a child):

left sam alone at the motel to go play video games and sam almost killed as a result

gambled away the money john left for food and resorted to shoplifting and got himself arrested

lashed out at sam when he mentioned mary

told sam about hunting

gave john the phone so he could guilt trip sam into exhausting himself doing research

left sam for hours at pennywhistle's all by himself so he could get laid and sam developed a clown phobia as a result (a phobia that dean, as a full grown adult, mocks him for)

sided with john during whenever he and sam fought

both john and dean made sam feel like a freak because didn't want to hunt

the first time someone asked sam what he wanted to do with his life, he was fourteen years old. no-one in his so-called family had ever bothered to ask him what he wanted. dean was eighteen at the time, so it can't really be attributed to him being a child; the fact that he never asked sam what he wanted is proof enough that he wasn't the caretaker people make him out to be

shamed sam for having a few happy childhood memories outside of his family. if he actually was the parent people make him out to be, he would've been glad that sam managed to find a few moments of happiness despite their crappy situation

there are a lot more examples, but you get my point

the few instances people use to support their claims that dean was sam's parent (like the cereal incident or the christmas scene *) are normal sibling stuff

*or dean's own words, who proved time and time again how much of an unreliable narrator he is

also there's something misogynistic about this, because if dean was an older sister, taking care of sam would be expected of him and he wouldn't be as glorified for it as he is and in fact most of his actions as a caretaker would be heavily criticized to say the least. also, I remember once seeing someone say that if a teenage girl had a child and parented her the same way dean """parented""" sam, she would be investigated by social services, which. yeah.
