Sanremo comes to an end tonight. I’ll confess, I haven’t been watching each night, but I have taken the time to check out all the competing songs, and here’s my ranking:
Mahmood – Tuta gold
Ricchi e Poveri – Ma non tutta la vita
Alfa – Vai!
La Sad – Autodistruttivo
Clara – Diamanti grezzi
Dargen D’Amico – Onda alta
Il Tre – Fragili
Annalisa – Sinceramente
Loredana Bertè – Pazza
BigMama – La rabbia non ti basta
Irama – Tu no
Sangiovanni – Finiscimi
The Kolors – Un ragazzo, una ragazza
Emma – Apnea
Fiorella Mannoia – Mariposa
Geolier – I’ p’ me, tu p’ te
Angelina Mango – La noia
Fred De Palma – Il cielo non ci vuole
Renga & Nek – Pazzo di te
Ghali – Casa mia
Maninni – Spettacolare
Diodato – Ti muovi
Mr. Rain – Due altalene
Bnkr44 – Governo punk
Il Volo – Capolavoro
Alessandra Amoroso – Fino a qui
Santi Francesi – L’amore in bocca
Rose Villain – Click Boom!
Gazzelle – Tutto qui
Negramaro – Ricominciamo tutto
Firstly, Mahmood was far and away my clear standout with Tuta gold. There’s something so effortlessly catchy about Mahmood’s style, and his distinct voice and charisma as a performer really set him apart for me. I like how it uses the little phone tone sound in the chorus as a hook and also to tie into the lyrics of the song. In fact, the song as a whole is really well produced, and I honestly want to listen to it over and over.
That said, there are still plenty of other great entries here. I found Ricchi e Poveri’s performance very memorable with them wrapped in the giant bow at the start, and the track itself is fun and exciting, and really benefits from the Sanremo orchestra, with all those violins going at the start. Vai! was another song I distinctly remembered after just one listen, with that little whoo-hoo and accompanying whistle making for a very catchy hook. I really enjoy the energy of the song and how uplifting it sounds. Autodistruttivo is a solid rock song, the ‘oh-ooh-oh’s might be a little generic but the overall punchy sound of the song is great, and I like La Sad’s distinctive look. I also really like Diamanti grezzi, it’s another song I think is really well produced, I especially like how the beat sounds in the pre-chorus.
If Mahmood hadn’t already been to Eurovision twice in the last past five years, he’d definitely be my pick to go. In fact, I like Tuta gold enough that I probably would be excited to see him in this year’s Eurovision too, but I’d also be very happy to see Italy send someone else for a change. As usual they’ve got plenty of options – I tended to prefer the upbeat, energetic songs over the ballads this year, but Italy will likely do well with just about any of these songs just thinking about Eurovision. Unfortunately I’m not going to be able to stay up tonight to find out the winner, but I am excited to find out tomorrow who they’re going to send!

Here to inform y'all that tonight, Wednesday June 7th 2023, at around 8:30-835 PM (GMT+2) on Raiuno (you need an Italian vpn to watch), right after the TG1 and, during the week also right after the 5 Minutes show by Bruno Vespa about Italian topical interest, the usual 55' summer TV fill-in show Techetechetè will start again (and last until September or so).
Why I am pointing it out? Cause they generally pick topic-based (music, culture, history, tv show, hosts, comedians, artists, cities, countries...) or random old/recent TV scenes that somewhat were/are considered famous in Italy and part of our cultural background to broadcast them again. You can see a few short samples of the show here. For example tonight's show will be able the famous Italian host Pippo Baudo (cause it's his bday) so I guess they'll show many of his show (like the many Sanremo too) and random scenes with guests out of his very long TV career (+ I expect this song too, let's see if they add it too :D).

Here are the videos of my preferred Sanremo First Night songs:
1) Marco Mengoni “Due Vite” (possible winner and it would be obviously deserved in my book, as he’s amazing always):
youtube
2) Elodie “Due” (she is fantastic in my book and although not perfectly delivering yesterday she is a full on star every step she takes for me)
youtube
3) Coma Cose: “L’addio” (as I said they delivered and although I loved their “Fiamme negli occhi” way more , this was still a nice song to hear)
youtube
4) Mr. Rain “Supereroi” (adorable kiss-ass move with the tiny kids onstage but the song is sweet and cute and he did well. The studio version holds up and globally I really enjoyed it so for me he was deserving 4th place instead of that lame position he got from the pressroom)
youtube
5) Ariete “Mare di Guai” ( I am weak to Calcutta’s writing and although she REALLY underperformed yesterday - maybe she was agitated - the song is beautiful. I hope she can climb it up a bit, because I’d like her to find more ample audiences)
youtube
6) Olly “Polvere” (I was almost sleeping when he came up and it was one of the freshest and more upbeat songs of the night. A youthful piece with no much pretentiousness but still really nice to hear, and I am sure it will be quite a bop on radio after the festival. He’s never gonna reach the top places but I still enjoyed it so... here it is)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6jFvKmxxIxM
7) Colla Zio “Non MI Va” (that was fun and energetic and I liked it for the same reasons I did Olly’s one. In a plethora of sad/downbeat/slow ballads (some of them REALLY old sounding even when shouted out, like Ultimo’s one) this was a good break and especially past 1 am to hear. Again, they’ll never reach upper positions, but I will be happy to hear them on radio)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nzqN_nUl8tU
8) Mara Sattei “Duemilaminuti” (a nice song well delivered. For some reason I can’t fully fall in love with it in a more “serious” way, which is why she’s only 8th in my list, but at least the flair globally was appropriate and impacting. Probably I would have liked it more if I didn’t know somebody like Giorgia or Elodie are already in the mix for the kind of space this song looks out for.)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ht8-c_UTHwc
The rest of the night was MEH. GianMaria didn’t click with me at all (but maybe after a while...?), Gassman totally botched the vocals, the song of Cugini di Campagna should have been sung by La Rappresentante di Lista and it would have made its actual sense. Oxa, Grignani and Ultimo for me could have stayed home... I understand why each one of them is there but either the performance was there, but not the song or viceversa (or both).
My two cents: I look forward for tonight with high hopes for Giorgia, Lazza and no matter the chaos surrounding her (sigh... what a letdown about the covid stuff...) Madame, because artistically she is a step ahead in general.
But as usual, I am always open to be hit by the unexpected.
W Sanremo!

okay its 2:30 am so this is not thought through or proof read but I am sending you my *thoughts* on the finals tonight (and also melfest heat 2 and the lithuanian semi final):
melfest heat 2 was ok…I figured either wiktoria or theoz would’ve qualified for the final for sure but neither have (although theoz is in the semi final so we’ll see) (also victor crone is in the semi final as well and I don’t like the song but I hated the song he had when he competed for estonia like I did not like it at all so :/)
the lithuanian semi final was fine, paulinas song is good and I think she’s among the favourites to win with mario (the song is also good) but I actually really like moonbee like the chorous is stuck in my head, beatrich was also good
estonia was the first of the night and the one I was disappointed by the most because ollie was my favourite by far (the song is kinda giving nickelback tbh but it works) and he ended up second and they chose a ballad (in english as well) and while its not bad it’s nothing special imo
denmark is fine but it reminds me of another song and it drives me crazy because I can’t figure out which one but I think overall the song is fine (has a lot of vocal effects tho so I don’t know how good these will translate to eurovision)
latvias song is actually really good I like that they included a bit of a latvian lullaby at the end but I also think hush wouldve been a good option as well
romanias song is also good, I think the final was somewhat weak but dgt is really good and catchy and he has good stage presence
malta was surpassingly fine although I would’ve loved to see aidan there (he was second last year and his song was sooooo much better than what they ended up sending (they changed the song after the final) and it was in maltese and I loved the song so much) I actually thought brooke would win but the busker is fun and could at least get them to the final
I don’t really wanna talk about croatia like they had some good entries in the last few years but this entire final felt really outdated and not in a fun way
as for sanremo…it felt both gay and homophobic (which I think is the point of sanremo) and it was at least entertaining to watch and during the superfinal I was rooting for lazza even though I figured marco would win (I think the song is okay but he is amazing live which is worth a lot and elevates it)
MER AV DIG GOES CRAZY I LOVE IT!!! Even if it doesn't go any farther that's an easy playlist addition the entire performance was amazing. I can't find a video of Wiktoria's performance but I love the song and her voice is GORGEOUS.
ok I'm listening through all of your faves from the lithuanian semis, Paulina's performance was so cool, I adore Mario's voice and the song is giving rock-country vibes I LOVE IT, Moon Bee's was a little slow for me personally but I definitely see the appeal, and I LOVEEEEE beatrich's performance, I think it was maybe my favorite and it qualified :D
I really liked the Estonian entry a lot, and Nickelback vibes is like. the perfect descriptor for Venom but I also like listening to popular Nickelback so it's right up my alley LOL
Denmark's I think was one of my favorites of the entries released yesterday but I think the concern about it translating to a live performance is p valid, I'm watching the performance from the grand prix and it's pretty good, but I think he could definitely do w some dance training? ALSO I REALIZED IT SOUNDS LIKE A LAUV SONG 😭😭 I’m not sure which one but it’s very much a how I’m feeling track and I’m a sucker for lauv. So
The Aija performance was perfect for the song, though I will say I liked it more on the 2nd playthrough than I did the first
I also really liked DGT, for me it also needed a second playthrough for me to really appreciate but it’s really fun and I’m excited to see it on stage!!
The Busker was giving me Be More Chill vibes during their performance and it's a funky little song, I hope it'll be a fan favorite bc given the track record of last year's judging I don't trust the jury (nor most of the public) to let it get through :(
The Croatian one was definitely interesting, I don’t think I loved the song’s sound but the translation and interpretation was interesting to read n it’s quite topical so 😭😭 I doubt it’ll get through semis though
as for sanremo I’m so confused about what happened bc someone else (?) sent me something about live divorces and sexuality crises but I don’t think I could make myself sit through it all 😭
While due vite wasn’t at the top for me during sanremo I haven't been able to get it out of my head so yk what? I’m excited to see him bc the recording sounds almost identical to his live performance it’s awesome also I just wholeheartedly want italy to win every year unless the song is trash, which it hasn't been since I started watching

I solved the Super Saturday conundrum of what to watch this year by going out to a rugby match instead, and stayed out late celebrating the result! However, I’m back at home now, and I’ve had a chance to get caught up on all the winners of the night so far!
First up was Estonia, where won Alika with Bridges. I’m not too into this song honestly, but I must admit that Alika is a fantastic vocalist, and I can see this ballad connecting with people, even if it doesn’t with me. I think it’s a decent pick for Estonia. I am wondering what might have been seeing that two of my faves, Monsters and Venom, were in the superfinal with her, and am wondering if they cancelled each other out with both being rock songs, albeit in very different styles. I’m excited to check out their live performances, and both songs are already added to my personal playlist, but I wish Alika the best in May.
DGMP was a selection that I didn’t really care for this year. I’m happy enough to see Reiley win it, the song may not be the most exciting, but it’s sweet and easy to enjoy. Checking out his winners performance, I thought it was decent, he had good stage presence, but his vocal was swamped by the pre-recorded vocoder vocals on the chorus, and I don’t know how that will go down at Eurovision. I could be wrong though, he sounded alright in the verses and Eurovision is fine with pre-recorded backing vocals these days so maybe it won’t be an issue.
Croatia shocked me by picking Let 3 with Mama ŠČ. I ranked the song pretty high based on studio cuts because I enjoyed the chaos of the music, but watching their performance I have no idea what to make of it. It feels like satire, but I don’t have enough understanding to know of what. I’m going to have to do a deep dive into the lyrics, context, and intention of this one when I get to my full ranking in May. Apparently Harmonija Disonance came second – I preferred their song and they were well liked within the Eurovision fandom so I wonder if this was a missed opportunity for Croatia. Mama ŠČ feels like a very risky entry, but hey, the semis this year are televote only so who knows what will happen.
The next couple of results, from Latvia and Romania, I was very happy with! Sudden Lights were one of my favourites so I was so happy seeing that they won Supernova! They’re such a great band and  Aijā is a very interesting song, so I’m so excited to see them at Eurovision! Then, in Romania, D.G.T (Off and On) was my favourite song from a selection I wasn’t too fussed about, so I’m pleasantly surprised to see that it won! I thought he sung well live, his rough vocal works so well with the song, but I hope the staging and performance gets completely reworked for Eurovision, I wasn’t that keen on it, even though I guess it does fit the song…
Finally, Malta also picked my favourite song tonight with The Busker and Dance (Our Own Party)! This is such a great surprise, I was sure Malta would go for Brooke, but I’m so glad they went with this instead! It’s such a catchy song, and the staging and performance at MESC was engaging, I’d be happy if they brought this exact show to the stage in Liverpool! I’m actually so sad I won’t get to vote in the first semi final, with both Latvia and Malta there. We’ve still got plenty more songs to be released, but I want so badly to see both make the Eurovision final, even more since both countries have struggled the past few years.
With so many results going my way tonight I almost wish I’d seen some of the shows live! Maybe there’s been a couple of disappointing results here and there, but I think overall this year is shaping up nicely, we’ve got a good range of songs, with several I really like. Now just to wait for Sanremo to finish to get an idea of what Italy might send!
