Kristen is so fucking relatable as a repressed teenager jfc. I am both horrified and in awe of Ally Beardsley’s playing of Kristen Applebees — Kristen is a MESS but she’s a lovable mess who I’m glad everyone’s kind exasperatedly supporting. I knew plenty of people like her in my school or going through this wild renaissance of new information about themselves (or that they wouldn’t let themselves learn about who they were) and it’s just really uplifting to see Kristen have such good friends through it all (though her speech started sweet and very swiftly needed to be shut down lol) but I know lots of people might like really regard her as frustrating and awful but she’s a teenager who is going through a lot of changes and crises of faith and persona and I just gah. I love her.

Fig and her care toward her two dads is adorable, every interaction with Gilear is gold (also props to Gilear for recognizing Sklonda is too much woman for him) but also the mantras in the mirror were so sweet. I also love how Gilear interacts with all of Fig’s friends and how Fig asserts herself and just wants the best for literally everyone. Yes she is very mischievous (also holy shit her deception skill is so fucking high??) but she’s mischievous on the path of good and I love it.

Fabian makes me sad. Like, he wants to impress his dad but he wants to be his own man. And Bill Seacaster — I still don’t know what to make of him— but being around someone whose mood is entirely unreliable (and assuredly that bleeds into other aspects of him) no wonder Fabian tries so hard to be strong and stable because he’s had to deal with instability his whole life.

Gorgug — I’ve talked about Gorgug a few times now but he’s just such a sweetheart. He called himself stupid and that’s tragic because he may not be the one figuring out all the clues and know what to do but he’s also the one they can rely on to diffuse a situation or just be kind about unknown things and as a barbarian that’s a huge tonal shift that’s so impressive. He’s not the brightest bulb but he may be the sweetest and that matters.

Adaine and her whole sibling rivalry gives me life. I’m glad she’s rebelling against her parents. She became powerful and wonderful and adept DESPITE her parents (whereas Aelwyn always had their full support) and I think that’s something that — while painfully — I hope she’ll learn to carry with pride.

Also Riz? One, he’s such a great like awkwardly confident teenager, and I’m glad he responded to his mom’s hiding of information the way he did (I love that him and Sklonda are like— healthy parent/child relationship) (also love how Brennan plays Sklonda), but he takes this with stride and won’t let all the things dragging him down hold him back and I’m sure for Sklonda that’s both amazing and scary because she wants her son safe but it just warms my heart to see.

And the teamwork here!!! Kristen and Adaine detecting magic and good here? Gorgug trying to find a power source for the palimpsest. THE BIZ REVEAL?? Also Riz’s final move here to take the palimpsest and then pull the gun with Biz!!! That was fucking AMAZING, because of course he’s not cool with what Biz is doing and I also I want Riz and Adaine both to absolutely tear Biz apart.

Adaine and Riz teamups are truly my beloved — like go you angry intelligent kids, go go go!

Honestly all of them — I’m so excited for this fight at the arcade let’s get it.

oooh fabian…many thoughts to be had. i love my little rich man

i may be getting some wires crossed here so someone correct me if i’m wrong, but i think there’s a kind of familial pressure to find faith in galicaea (mostly from hallariel, who really only does it to stay in good graces with her family). that being said i don’t think fabian has any strong feelings for or against any particular pantheon or deity, he just shies away from the question. he’s probably closest to what we think of as agnostic—the belief in something, just nothing specific. he’s counted as a follower of ankarna at the end of junior year so i think if he decides to take a religious route that the pantheon might be a really good fit for him so that it’s not just the pressure of one deity, but i still don’t think it’ll be his top solution.

fabian is probably scared of something really embarrassing (to him) like fucking. lady bugs or other tiny creepy crawlers. he won’t kill them!!! but he will shriek and climb gorgug until riz eats them, adaine magics them away, or kristen takes them at least 10 feet away from him

i know fabian is resisting a sibling now, but when he was really young i think he wanted a little sibling really badly and kept asking for one until hallariel yelled at him about wanting her to have stretch marks and for bill to start thinking she’s ugly and leave her. neither of which are true, because fabian just wanted a friend to play with, and instead he started spending way more time with cathilda. i think a sibling is daunting now for obvious reasons, but he’s probably a little excited to be like an uncle to any bad kid spawn or a dad, if and when that becomes available to him.

obviously he’s excellent at dance and fighting, but i think he’s also got a secret talent for board games. checkers, chess, monopoly, chutes and ladders, jenga etc. it drives riz fucking nuts because as the strategy guy he’s supposed to be the one who does well, but fabian ALWAYS manages to beat him without even breaking a sweat. half the time he’s doing stretches or is half distracted during the games and he STILL wins. the only person who’s ever beat him is gorgug, because gorgug also doesn’t care and winds up accidentally stumbling into a win occasionally, to which fabian is so impressed he literally throws gorgug a party.

HEY so i just finished episode 5!! they’re about to go into combat at the pit!! this is SO awesome i’m literally so engaged and excited about this story in a way that i haven’t been about a piece of media for a long time, it’s great. i think part of it is definitely that brennan is such an amazinggg dm and the players are so good at roleplay too, it all ends up being very engaging and compelling - and the randomness of the rolls keeps me on my toes because i can’t really figure out where the stories gonna go!!! it’s just so awesome :333

i think right now my favorites are riz (from a character standpoint he’s just sooo fascinating, i made a post about it), fig for her absolute hilarity in every moment, and gorgug in a like more lowkey way because he’s just so freaking sweet. i like fabian and kristin a lot too because i think they’re both gonna get REALLY interesting in a bit with the way their characters are. adaine is also dear to me with how honest she is - even with her nervousness and sadness she’s such a good friend and she’s so brave when it comes to standing up for them. i’m really excited to keep watching them :)

and yes the combat is just sooo fun and cool and the more roleplay heavy episodes are also GREAT and equally engaging and it’s just!! they made this so well!!! i’m so glad i get to enjoy it!!! deffo my favorite parts have been the high speed chase with johnny spells and his teifling gang and getting ice cream after, that was such a fun episode…

but yeah i LOVE this show and i love d&d now and i’ve been making my own character (aasimar warlock :3) and falling more in love with the game and everything and just!!!! it’s so nice to find something like this, where i didn’t expect to love it this much and i do :) i see why you like it and i’m rlly excited for sophomore year too bc you mentioned that one was really impactful for you!!

I need to go looking for your Riz post because i LOVE Riz so much he is so me vibes (also not at all, but really kind of) --- but really altogether they make such a well-rounded group to me and you really highlighted what makes each of them special. Jonny Spells is so funny and that chase is sooo good --- really opened my eyes to what D&D could be way back when.

Thinking about how lou said fabian is a soldier/poet (depending on the timeline) masquerading as a king, how gorgug is a barbarian but is so gentle in every other aspect of his life, a soldier on the battlefield but a poet everywhere else, how adaine has incredible amounts of righteous anger and only uses offensive spells but she is still a princess. The Report Card -- Fantasy High Sophomore Year Ep 1

Sophomores and Spring Break 

Note: Hey guys! I decided to try something a little bit different and slightly more structured than my usual recaps for FH: Sophomore Year. I’m hoping this will be a little easier for me and a more useful tool for keeping up to date since there will be a lot more eps to keep track of and they’ll be easier to miss. Lemme know what you think and if you want raw, unfiltered opinions on anything specific, feel free to send me an ask. I’m always down to go off about literally whatever. 

We’re back, baby! It is Sophomore Year at Aguefort and the gang is on Spring Break. A lot is going down so lemme break it down. The Bad Kids, having defeated Kalvaxus last year, are all entitled to a share of his hoard and all the red tape is finally cleared so they all get 20k gold each (which is an insane amount of money converted to USD if you use the WOTC conversion rate of a gold coin being around $145 (circa 2006 when they answered the question)--which would be close to $330 with inflation). Jawbone and Sandra-Lynn are moving in after less than a year into a profoundly haunted house and it’s kind of a Full House situation because Adaine, Fig, Kristen, and Tracker all officially live there (plus it seems that Zayn has also anchored himself to Adaine’s tower--btw, Adaine took the tower that the haunted house obviously has) and you know all the other Bad Kids are gonna be there on the regular. 

More importantly, Aguefort gives the gang their big project for the year--finding the crown of the Nightmare King which was stolen at the end of last season--which is worth 60% of their grade (Adaine does a full Hermione at this information). Each of the gang has info about the NK but the trail has mostly gone cold. Luckily, Fabian just got a hot tip about where Falinel is keeping Aelwyn and she seems like a pretty good lead to start with since she was super tied up in the bad side of all the messiness of last year. Adaine is displeased to say the least. 

Going off to find the crown is super exciting story-wise for two reasons. First of all, it means the gang gets to hire, well, hirelings to help them and temporarily join the party! They ping basically every cool NPC they can think of (except for Tracker for some reason which is BONKERS because (1) she probably would have done it for free and cutting her in would still be keeping the money in the family, (2) she’s dope as hell, (3) she’s a cleric and the party can always use more healers, (4) she’s a werewolf so presumably she has skills that would help in the woods, and (5) they’re t r a c k i n g down a crown and the girl’s name is literally T R A C K E R, but I will not backseat D&D) and eventually end up with Ragh (who has been without an adventuring party all year, poor guy), Sandra-Lynn (swayed by a nat 20 rolled by Fig), Cathilda (!?) ,and, for some reason, Gilear (which Fabian is happy about, mainly for the opportunity to maybe bump him off on the way). Second of all, if you recall, Elmville is a pretty modern town but the rest of the continent is less fantasy high, more high fantasy. Horses and lanterns and all that pseudo-medieval goodness. They are gonna stick out like a sore thumb. I am very here for it. 

Everyone goes home to rest up but, after some ominous dreams, only four of them wake up. Riz and Fig are left asleep and then Brennan mic drops and ends the episode which is a power move and I am extremely upset about it but also, respect. Right for the jugular immediately. I heard Murph and Emily are on tour in the UK next week which probably has something to do with this but, in the moment, I did not know that and I really felt the hammer drop in my heart. It was wild. Cannot wait to see where we go from here. Plus, who doesn’t love watching characters freak out because their friends are in danger?

Random Thoughts

I have no idea what the title of this episode is or if it’ll even have one and not a number but I gave it a placeholder one for now. I also don’t have access to the stream yet so I didn’t get to include some info I wanted to (like a record of nat 20s, and nat 1s so I can track their stats for the school year) and I probably missed some stuff because my brain can only hold so much info guys. I’m not Brennan. 

I mentioned this yesterday during the stream, but there will never be anything better than the pure D&D joy of everyone, in character, talking over each other to clown on each other. They get the friend-group banter that’s a hair breadth’s away from bullying so true to life and it’s so fun to watch. On the flip side, the opening scene with everyone introducing themselves and affirmatively claiming each other as their best friends was also peak D&D. Found family= best trope. 

Fig and Adaine burn spell-slots at basically the same time to try and beat each other to the best room in the (Scooby-Doo ass) house--which is exactly the kind of thing that would happen in this world. It’s such an intuitive setting. I love it so much. (BTW, Fig ends up staying in the false space under the revolving grand piano because, of course).

Fabian and Gorgug went to recruit Ragh, who assumed they were propositioning him for a three-way. In his defense, they did do it in a super proposition-y way and they were in the middle of the LGBTQ student union.

Also, Gorgug gives Ragh an inspiring speech about thinking you’re your own dad which makes him burst into tears. 

Speaking of, Jawbone offhandedly says he’s poly but, like, based on some of the stuff he’s said, I feel like that’s not really a reveal. He also gets along well with Gorthalax and would be down w/ a three-way if Sandra-Lynn wanted to which, again, totally checks out. 

Arthur Aguefort uses Chronomancy to rewind time and catch a snide comment Adaine made under her breath, which is exactly the kind of frivolous use of God-like power I’d expect from him.  

I really love Adaine’s energy coming into this season. She’s in therapy. She’s in a good home environment. She’s comfortable enough with her friend group to do stuff like prank Fig (love that they’re gonna be living together now). And she’s good friends with Zayn now which I want to see more of based on their one interaction in this ep which was very cute. I am already on record as saying I would be down with her getting a ghost boyfriend--I mean, for the aesthetic alone--but I’d be happy with just more friendship. 

Fabian is also hilarious this season because you can tell he’s gone a bit soft from having friends and leaning into that (the friendship necklace with Riz) but also he’s fully aware that it’s happening so he’s, like, ping-ponging back and forth like, “These are my friends,” and, “What am I saying? I used to be cool,” and it’s very funny. Very happy the Aelwyn storyline is happening right out of the gate, both because I think Aelwyn is a very interesting character with a lot of potential for nuance but also because Fabian reacting to her and Adaine reacting to Fabian reacting to her is always gold. 

Prompted by an offhand conversation from Fig about rock and roll, Brennan--earning another feather for his Cap of God Tier DMing--goes on an impromptu five minute long improved diatribe about a bard who played such a good concert that it instantly impregnated everyone in attendance (dudes too) who gave birth to kids with sick rocker hair and denim jackets and ascended to Rock Heaven on their 18th Birthday. You truly have to watch it to believe it. At a certain point I thought he was gonna drop it but that was the moment he doubled down and kept going. Amazing. 

Watching Murph, in real time, make up a girl/boy/whateverfriend in Fantasy Canada was a gift. 

I don’t have access to the stream yet but best quote of the night that I can remember is Kristen choosing her room: This is triggering and I’ll take it. (Her line about her lesbian starter kit and the one about wanting a horse were also bangers). 

The group talks about what they’re going to do for transportation outside of Elmsville since they don’t really use cars out there and they somehow get from “disguise Fig’s tour bus” to “commission Aguefort to create a brand new animal that can hold six people plus hirelings, one of which is Fabian who is also riding his motorbike”.

I love that Sandra-Lynn’s Mom Powers work on Tracker. 

Basrar doesn’t accept the invitation to come with on the quest, but he does give Kristen a bag of infinite ice cream sandwiches, which is basically just as good, IMO. 

Oh Gilear. The man is sleeping in the Seacaster garage, being bullied by skater kids, and now he’s stuck on this quest with his ex and Fabian who actively wants him dead.  

Speaking of, I’m psyched to see more of Sandra-Lynn. She was kind of a sleeper badass at the end of last season. 

Ragh is keeping secrets which I hope the cast doesn’t forget because it could be nothing serious (like the high school drama happening with Skrank and the 7 maidens--maybe he’s just crushing on Gorgug who did full kiss him during Promocalypse) or it could be Serious Business that will blow up if the don’t stay on top of it. We’ll see. 

Oh, almost forgot. Adaine wants an emotional support frog. Every time I think I can’t love her more.

Fig goes full Emily right out the gate and, after finding out that Skrank (nerdy bird dude who apparently can get it) was not only dating Ostentasia (rich, popular dwarf) but also dumped her in pursuit of Danielle Barkstock (one of Ostentasia’s party members, the scandal), disguises herself as him with Danielle to figure out what’s going on. And, wouldn't you know it, when she gives herself away, Danielle immediately is shocked and appalled, as you would be, obviously. We also learn that she’s still catfishing Dr. Asha which is, how you say, for sure a crime. Fig, please, I’m begging you. Cease.

Okay @hoarding-stories tagged me in this like several weeks ago and it’s been sitting in my drafts ever since but here we go. The “ten DIFFERENT things” really killed me here, but maybe its good, because otherwise there would be at least 3 critical role characters on here and it’s good to get some diversity. I’m also counting the different campaigns of critical role and dimension 20 as part of the same “thing.”

Name ten favorite characters from ten different things (books, tv, film, etc.) then tag ten people.

1. Fjord from Critical Role. Shocking no one who follows this blog. But I have loved this character since the second he opened his mouth and I feel it is a genuine honor to get to watch the journey he is going on in this show. He’s just the right mix of practical and chaotic, so good hearted while still being a deeply flawed character, and I just love him so much.

2. Riz Gukgak from Fantasy High. I maintain that Kristen and Gorgug were the characters I loved as soon as I saw, Fig Fabian and Adaine were the ones who I was skeptical of at first but came to love and appreciate as I saw their depths later in the season, and Riz was somehow both. I love his cleverness and his determination and his love for everyone around him, and the scene where he got his dad’s message is the one time in the show that I fully cried. Chaotic good, bitch!

3. Hardwon Surefoot from Not Another DnD Podcast. Jake Hurwitz came into MY house and created a character who is brave and tough and also a dumbass with a pride problem, and who is kind of an asshole but is gradually softening due to his sunshiney found family. And then he had him break down in tears as soon as he was alone because he was so worried about Moonshine getting Crick Rot and at that point it was all over for me. 

4. Reynie Muldoon from the Mysterious Benedict Society. Moving on from TTRPG characters now, I re-read these books at the beginning of the summer so just how good they are and just how much I love Reynie are very fresh in my mind. I love how good he tries to be in every way, and I so appreciate how his intuitive and emotional intelligence is shown as being a huge asset to the team. [[And, side-note, if you’ve never read these books or haven’t read them in a long time I very much suggest you do because it’s one of those series where as a kid you’re like “look at these kids kicking ass!” and then as an adult you’re like “oh my god, they’re eleven years old” but with this series it’s still an equally enjoyable experience because all the adults in the series try really, really hard to protect the kids and keep them out of danger so it just raises the stakes that the kids end up in danger anyway instead of breaking immersion, you feel me?]]

5. Lucy Pevensie from the Chronicles of Narnia. Lucy is the light of my life!!!!!!!!! The Narnia books are so so so important to me, and I adore how much Lucy radiates light and hope and wisdom. And I fully have a crush on Georgie Henley so there’s that too. 

6. Nancy Wheeler from Stranger Things. MY FUCKING GIRL. Nancy Wheeler is STRONG and BRAVE and TENDER and so fucking smart, like this girl is ALWAYS the one who puts the pieces together and figures out the mystery before everyone else and no one NOTICES and ALSO her fear reaction is to just start shooting whatever the threat is and i LOVE HER

7. Peter Quill from Guardians of the Galaxy. This might be my hottest take, especially post-Infinity War, but Peter Quill is brave and goofy and thinks with his heart instead of his head, and I really love him. He’s an automatic leader, and he loves his friends and Gamora so much, and he didn’t even think twice about sacrificing his life for the world galaxy, like, multiple times. I’m so excited to possibly see him play off Thor in GOTG3 but I am also very worried that he’s gonna get overshadowed by Thor in his own movie and that would make me upset. 

8. Dipper Pines from Gravity Falls. Dipper is the BEST and I do not take constructive criticism. Finds a mysterious book in the woods and instantly goes, “ah, I am a monster hunter now.” Is twelve years old and would literally die for his sister. Survives the Weirdpocalypse for days by himself. I love him so much. 

9. Ginny Weasley from the Harry Potter books. Not that I hate the movies or anything, but if we’re talking favorite characters we have to talk book Ginny because she really is That Bitch. Popular friendly cool Gryffindor and Qudditch star? Always standing up for her friends? Dealt with the trauma of being mild-controlled by Voldemort at the age of 11? Reacted to her school being taken over by evil wizards by forming an underground resistance group? The definition of Chaotic Good? We have no CHOICE but to stan.

10. Leia Organa from Star Wars. I couldn’t have this list without the first character I ever remember adoring on it. Love my space princess and love having badass female role models and love Carrie Fisher <3
