I was having a rough night so I went to my favorite funny website IsMercuryInRetrograde.com
I’m not a huge believer in astrology, but the website only has two pages:
If it’s in retrograde it says yes, which feels weirdly validating.
If it’s not in retrograde it just says “No, something else must be bumming you out,” which always gives me a little chuckle.
Fun silly website. Yay.
Except this time
Tumblr media
YES. SOMETHING ELSE IS BUMMING ME OUT.
The fact that unless I lock myself in a room with only pre-written or pre-recorded material that I’ve already read or watched and know is safe I CANNOT GO TWELVE FUCKING HOURS WITHOUT HEARING ABOUT THIS FUCKING WAR.
It’s killing me. There are no breaks. I open any website or social media app and it’s an immediate bombardment of info about the war. I go watch a YouTube video and then there’s a fundraiser at the end.
I flip through channels and see news about an antisemitic attack or a bombing in Gaza or Rafah.
I leave notifications on and get a text from a friend who sees a “rape is resistance” sticker on her walk home from school.
I go to look for pride merch and see watermelon merch mixed in as if war is some kind of gay accessory. I look through a fandom tag and see cartoon characters in a kids cartoon drawn with Palestinian flags.
It’s fucking endless. It’s insane. I just wanted a few days without having to think about all of it so I could recharge and I haven’t even been able to go a continuous 12 hour stretch without something or someone shoving the whole thing in my face.
It’s not healthy to live like this. I already have PTSD. And I’m trying with all my might not to retreat fully within myself but this is fucking killing me.
And I am someone who is pro peace and pro ceasefire and pro Palestinian welfare and anti-Likud but also anti-antisemitism. I do nothing but promote interfaith and intercultural organizations devoted to fostering peace. I want this war over.
And yet I’m fucking stuck in this perpetual hellhole of awful news and constant imagery about war and death and antisemitism and Palestinian suffering. And it’s too much. Why can’t I even go 12 hours. It’s killing me.
The fucking mercury in retrograde website‽ YES. SOMETHING ELSE IS BUMMING ME OUT AND ITS YOU.

You write unhinged Leo so well, and I really like how you write him. I was wondering if you had tips on unhinged characters 😂, or do you just get inspro from existing characters 👀
aksdakjsdh thank you so much ;w;
And honestly???? I’m not totally sure how to give tips— but I love, love, love unhinged characters in media, so I’ll use them as examples
Tumblr media
(long rant below lol)
I’ve always been a big fan of silly, ‘crazy’ characters in animated movies and cartoons. I grew up on Batman the Animated Series and the original Teen Titans, which were full of silly, fun tragic characters.
Don’t get me wrong, i love a good edge-lord— but as a tot i thought the colorful, theatrical, insane bad guys were more fun to watch than the big scary serious ones (ESPECIALLY if they had a good villain song. A+ good shit)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(From left to right: Ratigan from Great Mouse Detective, Joker from Batman the Animated Series, Mumbo Jumbo from Teen Titans, Martin from Secret of Nimh 2, Bill Cypher from Gravity Falls, and Spinel from the Steven Universe movie)
And not just bad guys!! There are a ton of unhinged good/neutral characters that i absolutely adore.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(From left to right: King Bumi from ATLA, Clara from Welcome to Demon School Iruma-kun, and, of course, our silly 2018 turtle boys)
((There are many more characters in both categories, but I’ll slide these examples in here for now))
My personal brand of “Unhinged” or “Crazy” characters definitely leans on comedy. That’s what i enjoy seeing and reading! I personally like it because it can help keep a story fresh and interesting. There’s an element of surprise and unpredictability with what a character might do, and i love that!!
I also really enjoy a touch of feral behavior in my unhinged characters. The lack of clarity and the danger that imposes can be a very fun tool to use, no matter the character’s moral compass. (I’m feral for feral behavior lol)
And impulses. Whether a character has a few screws loose or is generally a goober, they like to act on impulses. This often goes hand-in-hand with comedy, and that’s something I enjoy!! We get a lot of moments like that in Rise, and that was one of my favorite parts of that TMNT iteration.
But as far as writing goes, it’s been tricky for me. All of the characters I grew up or love have been visual— trying to find a good balance for reading has been a puzzle I’ve been figuring out as I go.
I read a lot manga (lol nerd) and comics, and I love how thoughts/dialog are depicted. Especially the really dramatic or impactful moments. (I’d add examples but I’m already at the Tumblr image limit LAME)
As strange as it sounds, I try to capture that “impactful visual” style in my writing. If I had ANY advice on writing unhinged characters, pay attention to pacing—
Short. Fast. A calculating thought. Perhaps a run on sentence that lacks punctuation to represent the rushing and disorganized thought process. A question? An answer with little thought. Is this moment amusing; describe how. Is it upsetting; describe how. Are the thoughts starting to scatter? M aybe s o…
Big moment statement.
Action or plan of next big move. Flow should never seem too uniform. Even in normal writing. Don’t be afraid of accentuating— but don’t overdo it. Remember, unhinged characters are impulsive. Have fun with that.
Just as a quick and dirty summary— when it comes to unhinged characters, I like to use comedy, feral behavior, and acting on impulses. I also like to keep it as visually appealing as possible for characters to give the eyes a little treat after reading walls of text. I like to use fun text formatting to help with the fun too (But don’t overdo it! Don’t make it feel like a chore to read) (<- says the girl who goes into way too much details sometimes lmao whoops)
But ultimately— have FUN!!! Unhinged characters are fun, so make sure you have fun writing/drawing/creating them!!

DEMOLITION LOVERS
Tumblr media
kinktober day three: hate sex
pairing: trey parker x f! reader
summary: you and trey are costars for BASEketball, and yet you can't stand one another
genre: smut
word count: 1659
cw: fighting, slight hitting (trey gets slapped), cunnilingus, protected sex this time
author's note: hehehehehheheheheehe
“I literally can’t work with him anymore. He thinks he knows better than everyone because ‘Ooo I have a fancy cartoon’. It’s ridiculous.” You spoke on the phone, twirling the cord in between your fingers.
“He’s cute though. Right?” Your friend’s voice rang on the other side of the phone causing you to roll your eyes.
“That’s not what I’m talking about. Besides, he'd be a lot cuter if he learned to bleach his hair properly.”
The two of you started to laugh, but I mean she wasn’t wrong about him being cute. Trey was cute, just on occasion had an attitude while on set and it didn’t help that Matt, his right hand man, would be right there, egging him on.
The knock on your trailer caused you to jump before going back to the phone, “I gotta go. Someone’s here.”
“Come in!” You yelled, grabbing your bathrobe and putting it on. Your costumes were mainly some sort of business casual outfit so any chance you took, you usually stripped down into almost nothing so it would be easier to get dressed for the next scene whenever it would be time.
The door creaked open as you sat on the couch before you noticed the bouncing of poorly bleached hair followed by the rest of him. Trey Parker. You unfortunately had the opportunity to play his love interest in this new movie called BASEketball and throughout the duration Trey seemed to always have something to bitch about and it drove you insane.
If he wasn’t complaining, he was either rushing things so he could go work on his silly little show, or pulling pranks with his friends on set, which included you.
“Oh…it’s you.”
Trey could sense you didn’t like him, after all he barely liked you it seemed. The two of you were constantly at one another’s throats, hardly able to practice lines or even just talk on set without it turning into an argument.
“David sent me in here because he’s sick of reshooting our scene and wants us to practice it.”
“I think it’s fine. Don’t think he needs to keep having us do it.” You spoke, getting up from the couch, walking to the little kitchen as you grabbed a water bottle, taking a sip.
“You may think it’s fine but he doesn't since he’s the director we should try to listen to him.” Trey told you, his voice staying monotone.
You shrugged, “If you think so.”
You grabbed your script from the counter, returning to your spot on the couch before motioning to him to a spot next to you.
He slowly walked over, plopping down next to you before opening the little book, “Do you wanna start? Or should I start in a different spot?”
You opened your own script and flipped through to the scene that you were practicing. “Hmm…” You found the page before jumping into character and starting your line, “Why do you play, Coop?”
The two of you exchanged lines, trying to put as much passion as two people who couldn’t stand each other could. After all, it was one of the more sentimental scenes in the movie even with the comedic underline during it.
“...Fucks the sleeve of his favorite jacket..”
“What?”
“Huh? I’m just saying…We’ll be here for Joey, I promise.” You felt Trey inch closer to you, the feeling of his knee touching yours.
“Oh Coop, I wanna believe you. I wanna believe you more than anything bu-” You were cut off by Trey pressing his lips into yours, his hand moving into your hair as he kissed and before you kissed back you quickly pulled away, slapping your hand across his face.
“What the fuck?” Trey asked, his hand going to his cheek as he looked at you. “You startled me.”
“Startled you? It’s in the script what do you mean I startled you? We do it every time we film the scene?”
“Yeah but we’re not filming? I figured we just wouldn’t kiss.” You tried defending yourself, although you weren’t entirely sure why you slapped him and if you were telling the full truth about it.
“Oh be so fucking real right now. You just decided to slap me to be a bitch.”
“Excuse me?”
“Come on. Like you haven’t been called a bitch before? Hard to believe that one.” He scoffed as he spoke, making you roll your eyes in almost disbelief.
“You’re an entitled ass who thinks they know better than everyone because he has his own tv show.”
“Well with my own tv show I think I have the right to be an entitled ass. I also have two movies if you forgot about those as well.” He spoke, you couldn’t even notice the air in the room growing heavier as the two of you continued to bicker.
“At least my reputation is a lot better than yours.”
“You think I care about my precious Hollywood reputation? You’re funny for that one. If I cared I wouldn’t have as much money as I do. And I definitely wouldn’t be standing here arguing with you.”
At this point the two of you were so close, you could practically smell each other’s scents, feel each other's heart beats. The silence between you two just grew, you were unable to come up with something to say through your anger. His eyebrows furrowed as he looked down at you with a scowl on his face. You probably returned the same but suddenly broke when he grabbed you by your waist, pulling you in and pushing his lips against yours again, this time more angrily.
You started to kiss back but pulled away, slapping his face again. Quickly, you pulled him in by his shirt, kissing him. His hand reached for your hair giving it a tug as the two of you quickly got on the couch, clothes practically flying as you pulled them off one another.
His hands reached for your breasts, taking them in his hands as he started massaging them, causing you to let out a moan into his mouth. He chuckled lightly from your moan causing you to pull away, “Keep laughing and we can stop now.”
He quickly stopped before kissing you once more while you pulled off his t-shirt and baggy jeans, throwing them onto the ground not caring if they got wrinkled or not.
You reached your hand down between you two, rubbing his length through his boxers and were honestly surprised by his size as you just always assumed he was smaller with the way his attitude was.
Trey was quick to wince under your touch, “Sorry I uh…never mind.” He quickly corrected himself, before moving down your body, propping your legs up.
He quickly pulled off your panties before blowing cool air on the growing wetness of your aching clit causing you to let out a gasp, giving him a small push with your leg.
“Do you want me to do this or not?”
“I’d rather you’d not be a tease about it.”
“God, do you ever shut up?” He asked, scoffing and rolling his eyes, moving your legs. “Maybe I would if you didn’t constantly ask stupid fucking que- AH FUCK!”
You were quickly cut off by the feeling of Trey diving his tongue in between your folds as he started sucking on your clit. You threw your head back onto the arm of the couch letting out a moan, gripping the bleached hair with your right hand while the other gripped onto the cushion underneath you.
Trey continued sucking at you clit, occasionally swirling his tongue as he moaned once you gripped his hair with your hand.
You felt Trey’s arms hook under your thighs before he propped you more on his shoulders, as he looked up at you.
The familiar pit in your stomach started to ache as you let out a small whine, “W-Wait Trey..” You tried pausing him, making him pull away.
“What?” His voice was slightly annoyed as he moved his arms from your legs, propping himself up. “Come back up here.” You groaned at him.
It didn’t take him long to listen before he climbed back up your body, putting his mouth against yours, rubbing his clothed cock against your folds. You pulled down his boxers, kicking them off with your feet before Trey motioned to his jeans, “I have uh a condom in there. Hold on.”
He climbed off from on top of you, grabbing the jeans and pulling the condom from the wallet in his front pocket. “Do you just carry that around?”
He shrugged as he started to roll it on, “Never know when you’ll need it.”
When he finished he propped one of your legs over his shoulder before sliding his cock in between your folds causing you to moan out, digging your nails into his back. He started his pacing out slowly before picking up speed, groaning into your neck as he thrusted.
He continued thrusting, the occasional grunt escaping from him as he started kissing on your neck causing your moans to increase.
“F-Fuck,” You whimpered out, digging your nails deeper, definitely leaving a mark on his back. “So close.”
“Then do it.” He whispered against your ear, causing you to roll your eyes.
It didn’t take long before you quickly felt the pulsating feeling in your clit as you reached your high. As his thrusts grew weaker, Trey shortly pulled out before slipping off the condom, tying it up, and throwing it in the nearby trash can.
“Do you think we can get through the scene now?” Trey asked, grabbing his boxers from the ground. You gave him a small shrug as you grabbed your robe, covering yourself, still not quite able to form words.
As you watched Trey get dressed you soon heard the echoing voice of Matt from outside the trailer, “It’s about time you two got it over with.”

why pre-1950s daffy duck should be considered the canon version
synopsis: this personality for daffy was the original idea (name), is more entertaining, complex, and versatile, and is a great way to explore new relationships between this daffy and other characters. i’m also not trying to erase chuck jones’s daffy or gatekeep what version people can like, just my opinion
what i would consider my strongest opinion about looney tunes is that bob clampett’s daffy duck (1930-1951) should be considered the canon personality for daffy duck instead of chuck jones’s daffy duck (1951-1969). what i mean by canon personality is that i think in future looney tunes content (movies, spin-off shows, video games, merchandise, etc.) that version of daffy duck should be the one depicted. we’re already seeing this in stuff like new looney tunes (2014), looney tunes cartoons (2020), and bugs bunny builders (2022), but i think most people still know daffy duck to be selfish, greedy, and caustic. i want the silly, insane, daffy daffy duck to be known in the cultural zeitgeist. i don’t want to erase chuck jones’s daffy duck, because i think that he has made some great cartoons and has lots of potential. the hunting trilogy contains some of the best cartoons in cartoon history. but here’s why the original daffy duck is a more interesting character.
first of all, daffy duck was made to be silly. it’s in his name. the definition of the word “daffy” is silly, odd, or peculiar in an amusing way. and i could argue that this version of daffy duck is more entertaining, but obviously that’s subjective and depends on the personal preference. i’ve always been a huge fan of random and insane cartoon characters, i.e. pinkie pie from my little pony and bill cipher from gravity falls. so instead i will argue that this version of daffy duck is more versatile. jones’s daffy duck can really only be put into situations where there’s something he wants, almost always money, fame, or survival. he then will do anything that he can to get this no matter who gets hurt, usually bugs, and then his plans backfire on him. a very simple format that can only be repeated so many times before being stale. but clampett’s daffy has such a strong personality that he can be put into almost any situation and it be very entertaining. obviously there’s the classic hunter and prey cartoons, like one of my favorites: duck soup to nuts (1944). but there’s so much more. in the daffy doc (1938) he’s a doctor, in porky and daffy (1938) he’s a boxer, in the henpecked duck (1941) and wise quacks (1939) he plays an incompetent husband and father, in plane daffy (1944) and daffy - the commando (1943) he works for the U.S. military, and many, many other examples. jones’s daffy just wouldn’t work in these circumstances, at least not in a way that’s equally entertaining. and clampett’s daffy is so much more versatile because he’s more complicated. the daffy we all know is a very one-dimensional character with simple motives. this is made apparent by the fact that jones’s daffy is a component of clampett’s daffy, as seen in you ought to be in pictures (1940) and daffy dilly (1948). silly daffy is selfish daffy, and so much more. he has a complex relationship with other characters, especially women (i.e. the stupid cupid (1944)), and has a shaky moral compass (i.e. tom turk and daffy (1944)). in 1951 his character was changed, but specifically simplified, to fit with bugs bunny.
which brings me to my next point: imagine bugs bunny with clampett’s daffy duck. why has that combination never been tried? i think that the two of them working together against elmer fudd or yosemite sam has great potential. daffy could be the chaotic and ridiculous one, while bugs has the more thought-out and successful plans and schemes. one of the greatest tragedies in looney tunes is that silly daffy was rarely paired with characters other than porky pig and elmer fudd. what about him with sylvester, foghorn leghorn, witch hazel, or marvin the martian? there are so many possibilities yet to be explored in future looney tunes media. even baffy (a ship i am not a fan of) could be interesting with this version of daffy duck.
anyway, this is something that i’m very passionate about and you need to understand about me before looking at the rest of my posts. i hope this has shown you new possibilities for this beloved character.

If it becomes more than a dream, what do you think a Super Paper Mario movie would be like?
Please write down everything you have to say, it doesn't matter if it's a 100 page essay I would like to read it.
Tumblr media
When I finally get not only yapping permission, but also yapping endorsement
I think about the SPM movie a LOT. Not because I think it’s going to happen but because I’m insane. I also think it works better as a show, but I always must migrate to thinking of it as a movie lol. I talk a lot I’m gonna divide my thoughts into sections (Again, I’m turning off reblogs because reblogging an ask gets rid of the read-more, I’m sorry!! It’s for the best LMAO)
Rating:
I would LOVE if they addressed it like the FNAF movie. I remember people talking about how “oh it’s gonna be for kids because it’s a kid’s franchise and they’re gonna make more money if they made it for kids” but they made it PG-13 and. Everything was fine. They made a shit ton of money and everything was fine. Point is, I think SPM would work best as a PG-13 movie. And yeah it sounds like that one clip of SpongeBob and Patrick screaming in terror on a baby rollercoaster, but SPM does have elements that would be Difficult to put in a movie format and still make it rated PG. With the game, it can be passed off as cartoon mischief and thus be E for everyone, sure, but in a movie? I don’t see it. And let me clarify- I know they could make the hypothetical SPM movie be rated PG and still have its original plot, but I believe that is only if they cut down on a lot of things and make it very goofy and overall remove the heart of the story. But do I think it would be fucking PEAK as a PG-13 movie? Hell yeah. They could have a lot more leg-room to truly pay homage to the game, which is known as one of Mario’s darker stories for a good reason.
But do I believe they would make it PG-13? No. Definitely PG. Again, I know this is a Mario game and it’s not some super evil sick twisted story oh my god cover your eyes little timmy blah blah blah, but STILL. Pulling off some of its core scenes on the big screen where there’s SO much more detail in the animation and the voice acting etc etc etc would be hard to accomplish without making said scenes less impactful or even shallow. And if you still think I’m being dramatic, the mario movie is rated PG. The Mario movie. And all Mario did was get punched and got a bruise on his eye. I’m sure if there was a storyboard scene of him, Luigi, Bowser, and Peach getting set on fire and going to the afterlife, it would have been SCRAPPED. OR, it would have absolutely no emotion other than “erm… THAT just happened!” Take your pick.
All in all, if it were to happen, the SPM movie will lose some things. Nintendo would NEVER allow Mario to be in an PG-13 movie. It’s unfortunate :(
Speaking of the Afterlife:
Nintendo will have to cut out the Underwhere, Overthere, Grambi, and maybe even Luvbi and Bonechill. OR, completely revamp that whole thing to make it as religiously ambiguous as possible. No fucking doubt about it. At ALL. I can already see the change.org petition run by a Christian mother screaming at Nintendo for blaspheming God and making a joke out of heaven and hell “which are very real and you’re teaching kids it’s some silly fake thing in a fake Mario movie BUT NO PEOPLE HAS TO KNOW THEY WILL BURN FOREVER IF THEY DONT OBEY!!!” (Note: just in case it wasn’t obvious, I am mocking the Christian mother in the quotation marks). I’m surprised Nintendo even got away with it in the first place, ESPECIALLY regarding Luvbi and Bonechill. I put “maybe” regarding those two because it’s likely 2 and 2 won’t be put together about who inspired their characters, but at the same time. It probably will. Yeah it definitely will
Bonechill is directly inspired by Satan, and Luvbi makes indirect references to Jesus. Regarding Bonechill, to quote from his Wiki:
“Tippi's tattle says that Bonechill may have once been a Nimbi, which is supported by the fact that he has feathered wings on his back. This fits into the overall motif of The Underwhere and The Overthere, which draw heavily from both Ancient Greek mythology and the Christian religion. In particular, the concept of a fallen angel (Nimbi) is inspired by the Biblical story of Lucifer, who became the devil after betraying God. Furthermore, in Dante's Inferno (of the epic Italian poem, the Divine Comedy), Lucifer (now known as Satan) is depicted as a giant, six-winged beast imprisoned in ice in the deepest circle of Hell. This is all paralleled by how Bonechill has six wings, was imprisoned deep below the Underwhere, and is a self-styled "master of the cold dark" who uses ice breath to attack and is "something of an evil celebrity in certain circles of the Underwhere". Similarly, his being released during an apocalyptic event (the emergence of The Void) may be derived from the Book of Revelation, where Satan escapes from hell and he and his army are battled and defeated in heaven.”
Do you see that shit. Do you think Nintendo would risk doing this in a movie, let alone ever again in any game? The backlash would be INSANE. And they could easily call Luvbi a blasphemous mockery of Jesus because she sacrificed herself to save the world, AND CAME BACK LATER😭😭😭😭😭
Anyways, yeah. In the SPM movie, that whole chapter of the game is what’s going to be changed the most. It likely will be solely based off Greek mythology with no Christian themes involved. Or even LESS than that if they’re too scared. God I wish they weren’t. That chapter is one of my favorites in the whole game (mostly bc it’s crazy to me how Nintendo didn’t chicken out of making it), and it sucks so bad to know it’ll likely be almost nonexistent if the SPM movie were to happen.
Run-Time:
This game is. Long.
In my perfect world, I like to think of it as one big grand movie and it’s the longest animated movie ever made and it’s animated by Dreamworks in the style of Puss in Boots: The Last Wish and it has 5/5 stars and critics are crying and screaming of joy and everybody who clowned on this game has personally showed up to my door to apologize for their wrongdoing and beg for my forgiveness. But unfortunately we can’t have everything we want
I don’t think they will cut out any of the dimensions, I just think that most side plots will be rushed through like a montage :/ It’s why I think it will work best as a series. Every episode could be dedicated to a Dimensional Door. But that also means it’ll likely have less of a budget which sucks
Blumiere and Dimentio:
Something will have to change.
First of all, Blumiere. I don’t exactly know HOW, but they will have to change about his story. The game itself has already gotten criticized for “romanticizing a toxic relationship” between Blumiere and Timpani, and that criticism will be MAGNIFIED with a blockbuster film. Again, I don’t know how the will do it, but they’ll have to adjust that plot to please the masses more than likely. It fucking sucks. But this is modern Nintendo. They are going to go the safest route possible.
That’s not the only thing regarding Blumiere that will have change. Yk how the game also gets criticized for giving Blumiere a happy ending but not Dimentio despite the fact that, regardless of their motivations, they both tried to kill everyone? That criticism will also be magnified with the release of a movie. They’ll have to modify the story to make Blumiere’s actions significantly less evil than Dimentio’s, which could be accomplished through making it so that Blumiere is mind-controlled by the Dark Prognosticus. OR, they’ll have to give Dimentio a happy ending too, whether that be he survives and changes his ways (BOOOOO🍅🍅🍅), or he also gets the “he’s alive somewhere” treatment like Blumiere and Timpani did. However, in order to accomplish that successfully with an audience of five years olds, they’ll have to directly talk about Dimentio’s own tragic backstory with as much weight as they do Blumiere’s. And l. Don’t see that happening. It would be absolutely CRAZY if it did and I would probably pass out in the theatre if we got to see the Pixl Creator, but yeah, it’s unlikely.
Mr. L:
Some good news! I see them making Mr. L recognizable
They probably won’t.
BUT THEY LIKELY WILL
In the first movie, Mario and Luigi’s bond was shown in ways they have rarely done before. Their love and care for one another is clearly shown, not just “that’s my brother Luigi wahoo!” or something. I mean come on, think of the hug scene. And you mean to tell me in the 2nd or 3rd or idk movie, Mario can’t recognize him with a blindfold on? Be serious
In a game, yeah haha funny gag, but in a movie, it’ll be met with more annoyance than anything and it’ll be really disingenuous, and it already does get that criticism in the game where it’s arguably “more acceptable.”
Conclusion:
There’s a lot more that can be discussed, but this is all I’ve put a significant lot of thought into about what I think the SPM movie would be like if I thought about it realistically. Basically, if it’s gonna truly be an SPM movie, Nintendo’s gonna have to grow a backbone. But even then, I still think it would be a great movie, especially in the eyes of those who haven’t played the game and thus don’t have the same “ARGHH BUT YOU FORGOT FLIP-FOLK NUMBER FORTY TWO” mentality that I have LMAO. And even THEN, I still think it would be a great movie. Nintendo will just have to be reaaaally careful to adapt to the limitations (that they put on themselves 💀) and still make it a movie about Super Paper Mario.

i also really like hollow knight! i haven’t played it in a while but i was at 111% completion on one of my playthroughs (CURSE YOU PANTHEON 4). i’m also super fucking excited for silksong obviously and i will say this now: WHEN SILKSONG FINALLY RELEASES… i will probably go on hiatus here LMAO. sorry but guys. SILKSONG…. honestly same for new deltarune chapters. the second chapters 3, 4, and 5 release it is sooo over for me. i probably won’t post much here for a few months during that. but that’s fine!! i’ll never abandon tllr but sometimes some things are more important to my silly little brain :3
gravity falls quite literally changed my life in 2018. like i can’t even explain it, but it’s how i was introduced to online fandoms and fanart in general. dipper LITERALLY made me trans (not literally but pretty much). it’s how i started watching other amazing cartoons and series i love, it’s literally what made me get into drawing art and writing and stuff. it’s what made me start making ocs. it literally made me an artist guys. which is how i started writing. without gravity falls and it’s effect it had on me, this account might have never existed?? i’m being super dramatic but wowww. i was so autistic about that silly cartoon
minecraft i love. i’ve been playing minecraft for over a decade and won’t stop because it’s like, probably a special interest of mine? i’ve watch minecraft youtubers forever too, hermitcraft and the life series are my favorite. i’m a huge grian fan too, been watching him since the evo days. anyway if u play minecraft and wanna play with me sometime, feel free to ask!!! :D i love making new friends and playing video games with people!!! let’s make a world together!!!
also i like terraria and stardew valley, and animal crossing new horizons but i haven’t played that in a few years. hmm other games i like are oneshot game, NITW, omori, celeste, cuphead, fnaf (although i’ve only played the first 5 games and am super super behind on the lore), ori, dead cells, untitled goose game (this is for u anon), and probably more i’m forgetting! feel free to recommend me some video games and we can even play together :3
other series i love are the umbrella academy. soooo autistic about this show it’s fucking AMAZING!!!!!! klaus is my favorite character. anyway i also like what we do in the shadows. it made me super autistic about vampires (before i watched this show i kinda thought vampires were cringe IDK WHY I’M SORRYY). the netflix show lucifer made me insane a few years ago and is what probably indirectly inspired me to give Dew wings. i also like our flag means death, breaking bad, moon knight, and camp here in there (another podcast i HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend, will wood made the soundtrack!)
i LOVEEE FINAL SPACE!! avocato has been my pfp on this account forever and now i feel like i can’t ever change it (i don’t want to). final space is seriously amazing!!! but it was cancelled and basically got fucked over by the networks- infinity train style. idk, stuff happened and it was removed from hbo max so there’s not really anywhere to watch it (legally) except for netflix international iirc? but it’s getting removed from that too i think. super fucking sad :( it ended on a huge cliffhanger too BUT there is a graphic novel being made!!!! super excited about that!
other cartoons i like are over the garden wall (dressed up as wirt for halloween last year), the owl house, adventure time, regular show, steven universe, infinity train, bojack horseman, rick and morty, mlp, the midnight gospel, and so much more i’m forgetting. OH anime i like are death note, demon slayer (haven’t caught up yet on the latest seasons tho), and MOB PSYCHO 100!! vampire in the garden on netflix is really amazing as well.
this is sooo long but now i gotta talk about my favorite music artists. WILL WOOD (AND THE TAPEWORMS) IS MY FAVORITEEE. I ALSO LOVEEE JHARIAH!!! AND HARLEY POE!!!!! top three of all time. i also like toby fox obviously, and glass beach (LITERALLY GOING TO SEE THEM IN MARCH AND I AM SOOO EXCITED!!!), mcr, shayfer james, weezer, mitski, lemon demon, set it off, tally hall, gerard way, and probably more i’m forgetting. i also like musicals!! (i was in the spongebob musical earlier this year for school! i was larry the lobster :))
so guys. GUYSSS. IF YOU LIKE MUSICALS, GO WATCH NERDY PRUDES MUST DIE!!!! OR JUST WATCH THE ENTIRE HATCHETFEILD TRILOGY!!! WHILE UR AT IT, WATCH ALL THE STARKID MUSICALS ACTUALLY!!! this is my current hyperfixation. the lords in black are amazing, npmd is amazing. i love everything about it. go watch it seriously, it’s fucking awesome and the soundtrack is AMAZING!!!
i think this is it. this got super long but i’m super passionate about my interests so yeah. this is pretty much everything. one very important thing (literally my special interest) that i didn’t mention are my other ocs. i have wayyy more ocs that are completely separate from the tllr ones. i don’t wanna post about them here though, cuz they’re not whump related and i want to keep my main account separate from this account. but they’re my favorite blorbos in existence so…
if u WANT to know about my other ocs, u can feel free to dm me for the username of my other fandom/oc account. that’s where i post other stuff that i don’t post here, like my fanart and my other oc stuff. i don’t post writing or anything like that there, so ur not missing out on that.
anyway those are most of my main interests! things i didn’t mention that im also really interested in are reptiles (snakes specifically), and animals in general. i have two leopard geckos named Lars and Alphys and i reallyyyy want a pet snake but my family hates snakes :(( anyway i’m rambling
thanks for the ask!!

(Psst don’t mind me I’m not really here but umm)
Tumblr media
Ma’am, I’m afraid I have to take you in for teasing of the highest order—please don’t mind me going absolutely insane over this idea
Okay listen listen listen.....
Listen.
I could go into the lore of Webslinger. Pages and pages of notes I have on this silly off-shoot character that showed up in a few issues and then some more in a cartoon (where he is a DELIGHT!). Wait...hold on....
So, Webslinger is a bit of a coward. Well, actually, a huge coward. As yellow as they come. He runs from danger. It's only after losing his Uncle Ben that he decides to take up the mantle of sheriff.
But I imagine he's lonely. Even after embracing being a hero. The wild west isn't exactly known for superpowers. Even though he's a good guy, imagine how many townspeople are still afraid of him. How hard he would have to work to gain their trust. And of course, there are those that remember the days when he would run as far and as fast as he could, only concerned with himself.
But you see the good in him. You always have. Your life is quiet. A school teacher that cares for the children, content to teach them all day before watching them run home. Retiring to a small farmhouse where you keep to yourself. You've never needed anyone, but it doesn't stop your own bouts of loneliness.
And when a mysterious man in a red kerchief rides by the school house every day, everything but his deep brown eyes hidden from view, you feel that same loneliness calling to you.
And maybe one day you find the courage to call out to him. Invite him to your little farmhouse for a drink. Nothing more. Just another soul to talk to after the bad guys are locked away and the kids are done with school.

Realizing I think the secret formula for me is games that don’t take themselves fully seriously, but have enough moments of gravity and genuine emotional weight that you can get invested without feeling silly about it. I’m thinking of Season 1 of The Walking Dead Game, which gets so dark but throughout it has a streak of nuttiness because of Telltale’s warped sense of dark humor. Until Dawn, which is a genuinely horrifying tragedy wrapped in idiotic teen dialogue written by a bunch of middle-aged people. Overwatch trying its hardest to tell a serious war story with a cast of characters so ridiculous half of them look like Saturday morning cartoon characters. Borderlands having things like Tannis’ trauma throughout the first game, Angel’s whole plotline, Krieg’s trauma and grief in his DLC, etc woven into its insane joke of a world. Forspoken being a post-apocalypse story where, in-between Frey’s cheesy dialogue, you see her genuinely distressed about the ruined towns she’s passing through, about the people who have died there.
Comparing it to games that I played and enjoyed but just didn’t “take” for me, like The Chant, which took itself 100% seriously even though the plot was ridiculous and the dialogue was terrible, or The Qu@rry, which didn’t take itself seriously at all, and therefore (to me) felt like it had very little emotional weight.
tl;dr There’s gotta be something for me to go insane over because it’s stupid and ridiculous, but there’s also gotta be at least Some genuine angst for me to chew on lol

hello again! hope you are doing well ^^ recently, I’ve been on a bit of a popeye craze as of late, truly I think popeye and his crazy band of characters are the epitome of my childhood lol and I was hoping to ask you- as I am also trying to explain to a good friend of mine the different eras of popeye through the cartoon’s entire run- the pros and cons each era has to offer with every iteration of the cartoon lol, including the film (which I actually haven’t seen yet!) it’s insane to me to think about jack mercer voicing popeye for so, SO many years and yet, I feel there’s so little we know about him y’know? plus, that same friend and I spoke about the relevance of popeye in today’s world and how it feels he’s lost relevance sadly, I don’t personally think he’s regarded as one of the famous cartoon characters nowadays, which I’m honestly quite broken up by tbh. I feel the best example of this could be the cancelled animated popeye film, but that might be a story for another day lmao. ty for reading all this btw!
HIYA!! I LOVE THIS ASK!! i’m so flattered more people are beginning to associate me with Popeye 🥹 here’s my brief sales pitch of “watch Seasin’s Greetinks and Let’s Celebrake before the holidays are over”!!! while its on my mind! and a personal reminder to myself because i haven’t either yet! BUT, MOVING ON..
YEAH!!! IT IS CRAZY, Popeye used to be SUPER iconic! evidently Bob Clampett was excited to get Warren Foster on board as a writer because he knew he had written some of the Popeye shorts, and he sure enough has slipped a few Popeye jokes in his cartoons (and animated the Popeye chick in Porky’s Garden!) Mike Maltese was also a Popeye writer turned famous Warner guy… Popeye was not only revered by the public, but fellow cartoonists! as it absolutely should!
AND YES Jack Mercer was on the saddle for a LOOOONG time!! Mae Questel was the first of the main voice actors to solidify, stepping into Olive on and off in 1934 whereas Gus Wicke (who is the definitive Bluto to me, sorry Jackson Beck, and maybe sorry to Pingo Colvig who i love but was NOOOOOT cast well for Bluto) and Jack Mercer stepped into their roles in 1935. you may or may not know this already, but Mercer got the job because he worked as a storyboard artist and would walk around the studio doing Popeye impressions. this made Billy Costello’s replacing on account of his alcoholism and general unreliability pretty easy!
I STILL NEED TO SEE THE 1980 POPEYE MOVIE MYSELF, my uncle (who’s the only person i know irl that’s as much of a cartoon fanatic as i am) was urging me to watch it but it’s slipped in my list of obligations.. i wanna see it! i love movies like that that are proudly… “campy” is the absolute wrong word but for shorthand, campy and warm in its embrace of its silliness. and evidently it’s pretty close to the actual comics, showing Olive’s family (full of Oyl/oil puns!) which is exciting!!
AH MAN! i’m doing lots of rambling myself, but i’m so glad you sent this in!! i really would love to see a resurgence in Popeye’s popularity. as it stands now, the Popeye shorts are right behind LT for my favorite… pretty high praise since i’ve fostered a love of Tom and Jerry since childhood! while it may not be as popular as it once was, people such as yourself taking the time to send in such a thoughtful and kind ask gives me hope! the people don’t know they need Popeye… but with me around, they SOON WILL

MY ATLA LIVE ACTION S1E6 THOUGHTS
EP5 - EP7
Not gonna lie guys, this episode was pretty solid. As always with adaptations that take place in an alternate canon, there’s things I enjoyed and things I very much didn’t.
First I have to say that they adapted one of my favorite episodes from the original this time around. They essentially mixed up episodes 12 and 13 (“The Storm” and “The Blue Spirit” respectively). That means we were largely focused on Zuko and Aang. That was a great choice to entice viewers like me, actually. I found the interpretation of the events of The Blue Spirit especially to be done very well on the whole.
I have some things to say about The Storm though. There was one very obvious change in Zuko’s backstory that I just don’t know if I can ultimately get behind, if not just because I don’t know what the writers are trying to say about this new version of him. Maybe it will make sense later. Either way, I’ll talk about it when I reach the end of the series and make a full review post, likely tomorrow.
Lastly, there was one changed regarding the crew of Zuko’s ship that I’m just so down for. Makes things come together nicely, feeling more personal in a way.
More on that under the cut, with the live reactions
oh. zuko backstory. right here right now?
zuko is giving innocent energy when preparing for the war council, but he’s not reading as a child. there’s something about knowing he’s like 12-13 going into the agni kai that really hits different. i hope the show can make up for that
so this is the setup for the storm. but with no storm. i’m glad the story is being told at least
except iroh isn’t going to tell the story right now i guess
crescent island lets go
fire sages with the funny little hats. and here’s shyu
well, i guess that there’s no fun locking doors anywhere, huh. where’s the whimsy :(
roku. roku buddy what. he’s a silly guy what
i’m kind of digging this roku
wait holy shit they’re referencing the mother of faces? that’s insane, isn’t that a comics or legend of korra thing (haven’t read/seen either)
is that all the roku we get?
okay,, so aang is captured by june now. are we gonna get back to save katara and sokka anytime soon? or i guess this could be a substitute for pohuai stronghold?? as katara and sokka are out of commission and aang has been captured. i’m guessing zhao’s gonna get him at some point and zuko’s gonna blue spirit it up.
interesting that ozai invited zuko to speak. it’s no longer “i spoke out of turn”, it’s just an undermining of the general’s tactic. which, of course, is no less cruel, it’s just interesting. one way to resolve this huh?
yeah there we are, ambushed by zhao
there’s some significance in the yuyan archer severing iroh’s topknot. i wonder what they’re going to say with this. if anything
so we ARE going to pohuai. iroh is really talking it up, huh. “impenetrable”, “armies have tried and did not succeed”. oh boy here comes zuko
please let the blue spirit have some incredible fight sequences
yessss get that tsungi horn in here i love the blue spirit theme
zuko you goddamn ninja legend (can you tell the blue spirit is a favorite episode of mine)
not as much of a fight going in as i’m sure it will be going out, where’s that bucket of water takedown, huh?
THE LADDERS FUCK YEAH THEY KEPT IT IN
iconic fight scene. it might have been shorter, but i’m very happy with it
this was Such a turning point for how we see zuko in the cartoon. they changed both the characters for this adaptation, so it’s not quite the same, but i feel like the pohuai/aftermath scenes were done justice
a lot more words exchanged here. aang’s showing an incredible amount of emotional intelligence here. within this continuity i suppose that makes sense. the line “i have a feeling you’ve been hurt more than enough” is hard hitting, but still odd to me. how did aang put that together from the information given to him?
zuko. fights back against ozai in the agni kai. there’s even a moment where he would have won, but hesitated. i don’t think i really like the fact that he fought back at all. while the suggestion that zuko is at this point more skilled than ozai (and with better morals to boot) is incredibly interesting (since he is also supposed to be very much a child), does this undermine ozai as a threat at all? he’s no less cruel or manipulative for doing what he did, but i digress. also what does it say about this version of zuko that he fought back at all. it’s weird to think about
HELLO?? so the 41st was saved?? and is now zuko’s crew? they weren’t sent to the earth kingdom anyway or left ambiguous?? this is. actually not an unwelcome change. this feels a lot more personal, and i’m kind of impressed with this cool new interpretation of the 41st
i didn’t say it earlier but what’s up with the iroh voice over?? this episode and the last have had voice overs and it’s. just a little weird to me? an odd decision. feels a little forced, but i guess they were like “we gotta speed this up guys”
liked: the 41st being zuko's crew, the pohuai stronghold fights, the focus on zuko and aang
worried about: zuko's characterization
disliked: zuko fighting back against ozai in the agni kai

8 Shows To Get To Know Me
Thank u for tagging me @jyuubin!!
Invader zim
I was a big nick/cartoon network kid & invader zim is just such a classic. I would watch the shit out of it, I’ve bought the whole series, the whole deal. When I was little I based my identity off of gir and when I was rewatching not too long ago I realized I still have so many lines memorized… it’s so silly and stupid and smart and gross I love it
My babysitter’s a vampire
Since this is a get to know me tag we’re like going through time with these series. This is another one I have lines memorized from! If I were to say which character I am it would be Rory and that is Important to know. A bunch of my friends love it too and we’ve rewatched it together it’s so fun whenever we do <3 another classic if u ask me
Merlin
If u asked me in like 2015-2017ish what my fav show is I probably would’ve said Merlin. And it stayed up there as a fav show for a WHILE. I’ve never been able to rewatch it bc of like. The Pain the finale caused me but I was obsessed with it when I did watch it. I had some huge multiship mindset going when I watched it and was shipping basically everyone together which I don’t think I’ve done for any other show… I watched tf out of the bts for it too. Like I was kinda in deep…
Skam/druck/skam austin
Is it cheating if I put a show and my two fav remakes LMAO… I’m a big skam girlie. We should all know this. I made this acc when druck was airing as a skam + remakes blog. I had a skam austin username for the longest time (rip gracefulnosplinters). The og is such a classic and gave me some of my fav pan rep (so did druck)! I was so so so obsessed and in my heart I still am. I’ll defend skam austin to the ends of the earth. I met some of the druck cast members (heyyy Lukas). I lived and breathed those clip drops in real time like they were AIR. I completed the Norwegian duolingo course and my streak is still going. But really which skam viewer has ever been not entirely invested in the series. I’ll stop now cuz I could talk Forever about it all…
The untamed
Oh god. If you knew me when I first watched cql I’m genuinely so sorry… I would NOT shut up. It was every other word out of my mouth. I related every goddamn thing I saw to the show. It consumed me for MONTHS. As in I literally couldn’t watch anything else until a few months later after binging all sorts of bts, adaptations, and reading parts of the novel (funny thing is I still haven’t seen all adaptations/everything lmao). I always say it’s a good thing I couldn’t legally drive people when I was in this phase cuz I ONLY listened to/played the fucking character osts in the car for months like I knowww my mom was sick of it (she’s the only one who had to deal with me in the car lmfao). It was also the first time I ever actually made a sideblog for anything. I found the show at a very fitting time in my life too. Probably one of the hardest times ever but some of the themes in the series stuck with me in ways that felt so personal. A lot of love here
Kinnporsche
Another one I was super invested in at the time. Would not shut tf up about vegaspete. Very annoying about. Rewatched tf out of it. You know the drill. The few months I spent watching it was so eventful
HIStory2: crossing the line
Okay I think I’m really just in a HIStory mood lately but this fucking show. THESE TWO. YU HAO AND ZI XUAN. WHAT THE FUCK. The best way I can explain this is in a way no one else can understand: it appeals to a younger part of me in a very specific way. Like it’s scary. The chemistry is insane like going back to it after about a year still made me feel the exact same crazy way. One of the greatest losses caused by covid was the sequel that got cancelled 💔
Bad buddy
We all saw this coming. Gotta end with a bang. My favorite ql of all time. Insane to experience live and such a perfectly crafted show (thx p’aof). Layers upon layers of depth to write about (which like tbh every bad buddy fan basically has, me included). Just so much to love. Speaking of love: milklove origins too!!! We get it all from one silly little series. I remember exactly where I was so vividly when I experienced so many iconic scenes. It’s legendary!
I’m gonna tag @dumpsterslugz (I can tag you in things like this now >:D) @pondphuwin @heart-ming @markpakin & anyone else who wants 2 do this !!

ive watched the live action boyband osomatsu movie twice now (with no subs) and I hate it so much it's cursed it makes me feel itchy. it's not even 2 hours long but it feels like an eternity. it was developed in a lab to be as pointless as physically possible it's a masterpiece. it’s almost 3 am and i’m going insane
like the first quarter of the movie is an osomatsu movie. well not really, but it’s like one of those cosplay videos on youtube where its a bunch of friends running around doing improv. the set design is adorable! I love their fun little house! the side characters look fun! the funny little cartoon fight cloud effects are super silly and fitting of the original. it’s cheesy and fun! it seems like it’s starting to set up a sweet story about osomatsu’s relationship with is brothers! im excited! except then you realize that osomatsu being a public nuisance and an angry drunk is a little more uh.. hard to watch.. when he’s a real man instead of a funny little cartoon muppet.
BUT WE DON’T HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT THAT FOR LONG! BECAUSE FOR THE REST OF THE MOVIE, NOBODY ACTS ANYTHING LIKE THEIR MATSU COUNTERPARTS AT ALL!
it’s the story from kun where the rich family wants to adopt one of the matsus. but this plot is barely focused on at all once it’s introduced. the rest is just stuff. happening. and it’s all scenarios that would be hilarious in the real show but here it’s SO.. its just a bunch of generic hot guys?? doing random movie tropes?? I GET that’s the joke, that they’re referencing a bunch of different generic movie plots (while the side characters do meta commentary over it) but it felt like an F6 skit that never ended. this section lasted soooooo looooong.
karamatsu had it the worst imo he did nothing resembling the original character in the entire thing. the only actor who actually acted like the character was jyushimatsu’s and he was BARELY IN THE MOVIE. and the idol group playing the matsus actually has 9 members so they inserted 3 oc’s into the movie that are just kinda. there.
for the record I watched the hipipo movie without subs and I could understand it all just fine with my very rudimentary understanding of japanese. with this i was LOST. IT’S SO CONFUSING THAT I FEEL LIKE IF I WATCHED IT WITH SUBS ID BE JUST AS CONFUSED.
at least in the final quarter it starts getting bafflingly confusing in a FUNNY way. the plot twists and action scenes just escalate to the point where it’s just nonsense upon nonsense and GOOD. I LIKE THAT. again its happening to a bunch of random dudes instead of the matsus but it’s more entertaining than before. and then it just ends? abruptly?? WHATEVER.
isn’t the entire appeal of osomatsu san that the characters have different wacky personalities and it’s fun to see them clash with each other and react to their surroundings?? well TOO BAD! it was just.. so not osomatsu. the vibes were so off. it felt wrong. i dont like it.

(S1E5) Battle For Dream Island: The Power Of A Community
youtube
Today I'm doing something a little different, and delving into the world of indie cartoons! Instead of being aired on a big channel like Cartoon Network, Nickelodeon, Disney Channel, or even a streaming platform, Battle For Dream Island is a YouTube webseries! I’ve always had an admiration for people who find ways to do big projects like this without the support of a whole company behind them. The show was released way back in 2010, created by twin brothers Cary and Michael Huang when they were just 12 years old. It follows a cast of anthropomorphic objects competing against each other to win the titular “Dream Island”. Since its initial release, the show continued on for another 4 seasons, two of which are still going on RIGHT NOW, and they currently have an entire crew and production team to help make episodes!
Tumblr media
While it’s an incredible success story, the reason I’m talking about BFDI isn’t because of the show itself, but the community it created. The show raked in tons of fans even when it was a small no-budget project, and it only grew as the show got bigger. Heck, I was a fan way back when the second season was coming out, back in 2013! Soon, other people got inspired by the show, and by the fact that it was made independently by two preteens, and made their own “Object Shows”, as the genre is called. Nowadays there are dozens of different shows in the category, such as Inanimate Insanity (the second object show to be created), ONE (A genre deconstruction of object shows), and Open Source Objects (a show in which every scene is animated by a different person, in their own style).
Even those who didn't go through the effort of making an entire show still made things inspired by the show. There are a lot of people (including me) who make fan art, original characters, write fanfiction and more! An especially interesting phenomenon is object “camps”, where someone will host a competition online, and other people in the object show community will join with their original characters as contestants. The host will set up a challenge, and each contestant will write their character completing said challenge. In fact, this is actually how I met my boyfriend!
Tumblr media
Which brings me to a personal point. The show and its community are important to me, personally. Like I said before, my boyfriend and I were both huge fans of BFDI, and we first interacted when he was hosting an object camp! He loved the way I wrote my character, and we bonded over the show. We became close friends, and a few years later, got even closer! On the non-romantic side of things, the object show community really inspired me to draw art consistently and create my own characters (even if they were just drawings of household objects with stick figure limbs), since I wanted to participate in all the fun I saw my community members having. I even tried to create my own object show (which I almost fully wrote out but never animated, but hey maybe I’ll revisit it someday)! Also, a group of my friends and I created our own little BFDI-inspired competition show multiverse called the Character Elimination Cinematic Universe. We all take characters from shows, movies, or games we enjoy and write them into our own big crossover stories, where they do fun challenges to win a prize! It’s a bit silly, but it’s a lot of fun too! Though I don’t watch Battle For Dream Island too much anymore, I cannot deny that it had a huge impact on me as a person, as it has for so many other people.
Tumblr media
And that’s really all I have to say for this post! Honestly, I could ramble for way longer but I’m writing a blog post, not a 10-page essay! Thank you for reading, and I’ll see you in my next post (also please give me cartoons to cover I’m running out of ideas lol)

I’m delighted to hear that people seemed to like my comparison of Max’s voices. And when I floated the idea of doing a similar comparison for Sam’s voices, people seemed keen. Now, Sam has had less voices than Max over the years, three currently, but fortunately, I have a lot to say about all of them. Sam is probably my favourite character in the series, and his voices over the years have given him a lot of charming little nuances. I will do my best to keep this to a voice comparison and not a shameless Sam appreciation post, but we’ll see...   I want to start by summing up one of the key things that I think makes Sam tick, and what I believe makes a good Sam voice. And that is that Sam is NOT the straight man of the duo...but he LOOKS like he is. Everything about Sam’s design makes him look relatively normal compared to Max. He’s a big dog which people associate with affection and friendliness. Sam wears clothing like every other character while Max is canonically nude, specifically a full suit which also doubles to make him look like a consumate professional. He’s also slightly more humanoid in appearance, compared to Max’s stumpy shaped body and massive head. All of this makes you think, ‘oh, this guy’s a sensible, professional detective compared to the insane rabbit next to him’.    Then he opens his mouth and tells you cheerfully about how Max made a clown choke on his own wig during their last case and it was the funniest, most adorable thing he’d ever seen. And THAT’s when you know this guy is a total enabler every bit as unhinged as his partner. A good Sam voice is able to make Sam sound perfectly normal at first glance, but all it takes is a minute’s conversation to learn that he’s ABSOLUTELY not.
Tumblr media
Anyway, let’s start as we did last time at Hit the Road. I don’t think it’s a bold statement to say that Bill Farmer is a terrific voice actor, but he does a splendid job here. Sam & Max has always had an element of noir parody, and a tongue in cheek take on detective fiction. The second Sam opens his mouth, you can instantly spot the Humphrey Bogart-esque voice he’s going for. Sam is supposed to put you in mind of a stoic, by-the-book noir detective. He sounds like he could have walked right of a black-and-white movie from the 50s. More than that, he sounds like a professional. Then you listen to what he’s actually saying and you realise...
Tumblr media
Oh my god, this guy is a jerk!      Farmer’s Sam is absolutely Sam at his snarkiest. Most of his dialogue slips in some subtle dig at whoever he’s talking to. He and Max’s banter is quite dry and cutting, but still feels very natural (especually in the classic ‘lousy golfer’ exchange, which I think pretty much everyone in the fandom has memorised after that one fan animation). Just listen to how many roasts he dishes out in this game.   “Excuse us, but we need some help and although you seem dangerously unequipped brain wise, we’ve come to you for advice.”
It means that he can shrug off everything, no matter how bizarre, as perfectly normal, which sells you further on that deceptive lunacy.   Sam also keeps up that air of faux-professionalism even when he’s being as un-professional as possible. Whether’s he shrugging off the flirtatious advances of a bungee-jumping instructor or getting into silly fights with a kid in the line, Sam never stops acting like he’s the star of his own personal movie. He’s got a severe case of ‘protagonist entitlement’, which makes his propensity to steal everything that’s not nailed down kind of fitting. I love the accent, I love the performance and I love his snark. I really wish we’d gotten that 2004 game so we could hear him for a little longer.
Tumblr media
“This is so degrading.” “Shut up and dance.”
Then we have the late, great Harvey Atkin from the cartoon, probably the most different and unique take on Sam, but still a very good one. Everything in the animated series is more cartoonish and over-the-top. So Sam’s pretence of professionalism becomes more of a jolly sense of bluster. He’s still very much a man (er, dog) on the case, but he’s much less dry and much more upbeat. That’s a lot like what I noticed with Rob Tinker’s Max, and it does help to give them a mutual high energy as they bounce off each other. While I personally like Sam to be a little quieter, and to hide that mad streak a little more, I still really enjoy this approach. It’s certainly the kind of voice you’d expect from a giant talking dog and fits very well with the fast-paced nature of the cartoon.
Tumblr media
What Atkin absolutely nails, more than any other voice, is Sam’s temper. Being much louder and cartoonish in general means he can go hard on the moments where Sam gets mad. And that’s great because Sam has always been the more short tempered of the two. Max may be very violent but he’s not exactly one to get angry. Like I said last time, he’s more guarded with his emotions and more easy going. Sam is a lot more insecure and has much more things that set him off. Imply he’s bad as his job? Make fun of him for being a dog? Make a crack about his weight? Hurt Max in any way? All of those things can leave you with a very angry, 6ft tall dog with VERY large teeth.
Tumblr media
‘Pinkbellies. I hated those. To this DAY I hate those. CURSE YOU MELON HARGAVES!!!”     Atkin sells ‘angry Sam’ very well, especially when it contrasts with how jovial he is the rest of the time. Atkin’s Sam is certainly a sharp contrast coming directly off of Farmer, but it’s an excellent performance in it’s own right.
Tumblr media
Last of all we have David Nowlin, by far the longest-running Sam voice, between all three Telltale games, Poker Night 2 and This Time It’s Virtual. And this is probably my favourite voice for Sam. Now if you listen to his first few performances, you can really hear a resemblance between Bill Farler’s performance and David Nowlin’s. And that’s partly because, if you read the interviews on the Sam & Max website, you’ll see Nowlin was actually a huge fan of Farmer’s performance and consciously tried to emulate it.   But overtime, his performance morphs into something distinct. In TTIV especially, his performance becomes a little less stoic and a little more upbeat. Ther’s a charming quiet affability to his voice somewhere between Farmer’s casual snark and Arkin’s cheerful enthusiasm.  And I really like that for Sam. It’s like he’s able to treat the most bizarre scenarios like they’re a typical Tuesday event. Being in this line of work alongside Max of all people for so long means nothing can phase him. His quiet delivery also re-captures a quirk of Farmer’s Sam. It’s one thing to sarcastically insult someone, it’s another to do so in a perfectly nice and civil tone. He can be biting or downright sinister in the most pleasant voice possible. A classic case of ‘beware the quiet ones’. “Max, do you have a piece of paper handy?” “You want to write down the phone number?” “(perfectly level tone) I remember the number. I want to write myself a reminder to smother you with a pilow in your sleep.”   The other key difference is that his Sam is a lot less confident and a lot more vulnerable. His tone is quieter, he’s a lot more easily flustered, and, much like Atkin’s version, it’s much easier to make him mad. And that’s honestly really interesting because, when you think about it, Sam is very insecure. No-one’s asking him to dress up in a suit or carry himself like a detective. That’s something he does himself because he so desperately wants to be cool. The best example of that is the Noir Sam segment. Sam narrates to himself on long, impassioned tangents out of his despair for Max, only for others to call him out for doing so, and he has to sheepishly apologise before gettng back to the point. “You. Me. The guy who delivers your deep dish pizzas...all of us bubbling over with sin and corruption and-” “Is there a point to any of this? Or are you just trying to get me depressed?” “(pleasant rational tone) Sorry, just thinking out loud. (furious again) WHERE WERE WE?!”
Tumblr media
And speaking of, 303 is probably Nowlin’s best performance. I think Atkin still has the best ‘angry voice’, but I love the growl of Nowlin’s delivery here. It’s a very dog-like angry performance if that makes sense, that walks a line between being aggressive but still funny, and his instant swaps from grief-stricken rage to calm conversation are hillarious.   The best way I can say it is that, much like how Rob Tinkler is my favorite Max because he was able to capture the essentials of the character while still adding his own dimension, Nowlin does the same for Sam. He hits all the beats of what I’d want from a good Sam: the business-like detective caricature, a quiet, pleasant, demanor that masks an unhinged enabler who can say the most nonsense stuff with a straight face. A barely concealed temper that boils up when you say the wrong thing to him. All whle giving the character a layer of subtle insecurity that works well both for comedy and sincere character development. Sam is a self conscious dork playing at being a cool, capable detective. Always putting up an act, and not doing a very good job maintaining it. And I think that especially helps in Season Three. It’s very easy to feel sorry for this more vulnerable Sam when he’s going through hell, but it never gets so overdone that he stops being funny.
Ok, if this goes on much longer, it IS just going to be spiel on why I relate way too hard to a talking dog. So I’ll just say this. All three of these voice actors do a splendid job and they all have their strengths. I love Farmer’s effortless noir parody and merciless snark. I love Harvey Atkin’s jovial energy masking a fierce temper, and I love Nowlin’s quiet brand of madness and extra layer of humanity. They’re all funny and likable while still being complete jackasses in their own ways.   So many years, and not one dud performance along either of these leads. If you ask me, that’s pretty impressove. A lot of talented people put a lot of effort into bringing this duo to life, and I think it more than paid off.

If no one is going to talk about Craig of the Creek, then I will!
I am actually really surprised that I never saw it around my dashboard if I have to be honest, because it is defenitely a show within me and my mutual’s vibes! At least, in my opinion.
In case you have no idea what I’m taking about, Craig of the Creek is a cartoon about kids hanging out at the creek of their little town. It’s a very simple premise, but boy, do they deliver!
I found it while zapping on tv, thought it was cute and started watching it anytime I saw it on air. It is rare for me to find out new stuff like this nowdays, since it is more likely that I get it suggestions from mutuals and friends, and this is exactly why I can’t believe I saw none of them metioning it!
Besides having great characters and - you guessed it! - great LGBT+ rapresentation (and obviously an insane amount of fun nerdy references), the thing that actually hooked me is how they nailed the creativity and fantasy of kids! It’s insane how much it reminds me of my own childhood, when I was playing adventures with my friends at the park. It makes me want to call my friends and do it again, being silly and pretend to fight evil!
Kelsey, one of the three main characters, really hits me in the feels because I was her. She loves fights and fantasy books, she considers herself a knight and a warrior, but she also loves to write and tell her own stories. It’s just, so much for me! I see so much of myself in her even now. I wish kid me had the same, a character that was so much like her and that made her feel more confident and comfortable with who she was. Fully seeing herself in a show.
I’m still immensely happy that kids these days can have that.
Anyway, yeah, I watched it properly these days, and it’s super cute and fun, and somehow gets a good proper plotline despite the general single adventure per episode format.
If you want some light and harmless fun with great characters and light fun stories, you should totally check it out! I highly recommend it!
