So my yuri on ice obsession came back like it always does this time of year and

Imagine an AU where all those lawyers are figure skaters instead of lawyers.

And competitive skating holds the same kind of weight and corruption that law does in the ace attorney world. Imagine Phoenix becoming a figure skater to help out Edgeworth, who was adopted into the Von Karma family. Who are rumored to pay off judges, blackmail competitors, basically any underhanded tactic to achieve perfect scores.

Miles Edgeworth "Demon of the Ice". Who has never not placed gold at any meet.

Phoenix grew up skating with him as a kid. He doesn't see that joy in his eyes anymore, and wants to help him.

There's a lot I can still do with this. All the crazy stuff in ace attorney still would be around. There would still be a TON of murder and extortion and other shenanigans.

So I've been thinking lately about how Mithrun is Kabru's dark mirror (more on that another time- it needs its own post), and I thought it interesting that one of their parallels is that they were both cared for by Milsiril, but in opposite directions. She took Kabru in as her foster after he was orphaned and tried to convince him not to become an adventurer. On the flip side, she helped rehabilitate Mithrun specifically so that he could rejoin the Canaries.

And I kept wondering: why?

For Kabru, obviously she loves him a whole lot- despite any other shortcomings in their relationship, I do believe that.

So I get why she tries to convince him not to go dungeoning, and, failing that, at least prepares him as thoroughly as she can.

But why help Mithrun? She used to hate Mithrun, but after realizing what a secretly twisted person he was, she actually thought of him more positively (oh, Milsiril). So it wasn't as if she held the kind of grudge that might motivate her to make his already-depleted life even more miserable by sending him back to the dungeons. And it wasn't that she felt bad for him either, since she didn't visit Mithrun for the first ~20 years of his recovery.

The Adventurer's Bible says that Utaya was the impetus for Mithrun returning to the Canaries, but Milsiril is the one who made the trip to see him and tell him about it.

Why would Milsiril work so hard to get her old coworker back into fighting fit? Why encourage him to return to such a dangerous lifestyle, when she was the one who chose not to mercy-kill him?

That last panel is such a crazy thing to hint at and then never elaborate on. Without it we could have just thought that Milsiril wanted the Canaries' work to continue without her, even if it seemed out of character. I think some people even assume she's just a natural caretaker as a foster mom and handwave it to include nursing Mithrun too. What could Milsiril's suspicious motives be? What does she gain from Mithrun joining the Canaries that isn't an altruistic desire to see dungeons safely sealed? Feeling a sense of responsibility for the work she left behind isn't an ulterior motive.

My theory is: Milsiril, knowing that Mithrun was empty save for the burning desire to face the demon again, wound him up like a clockwork doll and pointed him back at the dungeons.

Hoping that he'd eliminate the biggest threat to Kabru's life, before it was too late for him.

Favoritism for Astarion aside, I think no one sees the tragedy in Wyll because he never really strays from "being good". We're never really given a moment where his actions had costs larger than himself. If he'd refused Mizora's pact, he'd obviously have the guilt of any lives lost on his shoulders. He accepted it though. If you're unshakable in your goodness there's no way you can be unhappy, clearly you're content with all your choices. WHICH IS THE POINT OF WYLL! HE DOESN'T REGRET HIS CHOICES BUT HE ISN'T HAPPY EITHER!

Astarion's whole thing is how fucking hard it is to be good, how easy it is to be a bad person. That's where Wyll comes into play! He showcases how often doing the right thing comes at a personal cost! That's the actual struggle with Wyll. In his efforts for justice he's losing himself. People aren't infinite resources, yet Wyll gives and sacrifices and takes the hits like he'll never run dry.

The parallel themes of identity loss, the balance one most walk between altruism and selfishness, when does doing good at the detriment of yourself become detrimental to others as well, how can someone justify their selfishness, their sacrifices, when does someone need to tell you to stop giving, to stop taking? Actually the way Umemiya smiled at Sakura is SO. The last few chapters with Takiishi we didn't see any indication Umemiya could pay attention to anything outside his fight. It's highly likely that Sakura's wake-up call was the first time Umemiya's come to since Endo gave Tsubakino and gang a good thrashing downstairs.

Which is to say, Sakura being there, bloodied and bruised but smiling, telegraphs to Umemiya: the town is safe. You trusted us to protect the town, and we did, so now all that's left for you to do is win. Don't hold anything back.

That's not even getting to how Sakura saying his words back to him is the ultimate relay. Sakura listened to Umemiya every single time he's passed on his wisdom: that fighting is a way they can communicate with others, that they come from similar pasts, that they can't lose; they have to keep getting back up because that's what it means to bet everything on the line. Sakura already internalised his words to such a degree that it's what drove him to win against Endo.

It wasn't easy for Sakura to shoulder that either; he even said it was heavy. But he still carried his will despite that… I can't imagine how reassuring that must be for big brother Umemiya 😭
