Writing tips # 6 - The Body

Hey, hi everyone! I'm back again with yet another segment of Writing tips. Today I'm going to chat about something many struggle to describe. The body. Below will be several categories containing words synonymous with descriptors used when explaining someone's body. Hopefully, now y'all won't end up struggling for an hour like I have trying to figure out a socially correct way to explain that this particular character is obese :D

Thin

Angular, bony, emaciated, dainty, ethereal, frail, gangly, lanky, lean, malnourished, narrow, petite, puny, rawboned, scrawny, skeletal, skin-and-bone, skinny, slender, slight, slim, stick, twiggy, underweight.

Heavy

Beefy, big-boned, bloated, brawny, broad, bulging, bulky, burly, chubby, chunky, dense, elephantine, full-bodied, gargantuan, heavy-set, husky, lumpy, massive, obese, oversized, paunchy, plump, plumpish, portly, potbellied, pudgy, robust, rotund, round, shapeless, solid, stocky, stout, thick, wide.

Short

Compact, dwarfed, dwarfish, little, low, miniature, pint-sized, runty, squat, stunted, stubby, stumpy, tiny, undersized, wee.

I've decided that, to go along with her general insecurity, she's also really insecure about her appearance

Pear shaped, gains weight easily, and hates that it reminds her of being a chubby kid. Has freckles and a button nose and hates them because she thinks they make her look childish. Wore a headband to work once and immediately binned it because Alice flirted made a joke about school uniform and Gwen got self-conscious.

Used to have long blonde hair, got it chopped into a bob about a year before TMAGP begins

Tbh I'm tired of the standard body types that we get with the current in-house the clone war / the bad batch animation. Every single person is skinny. You're most likely to see a woman with very wide hips on an alien. All the women are average height or short and all the men are 6 ft. All the men have a typical broad shoulder and narrow waisted wasted body shape. Nobody has a gut unless they're a bad guy or otherwise undesirable or just to throw away character. Or free taa was a fat character and he was evil and he died. The bad batch had one fat man in the background and he was animated quite well! And we never saw him again. There's nobody with maybe big boobs and no ass or vice versa. Nobody who happens to have no hips or a soft/straight figure, especially not for women. Everyone is skinny. Nobody pudgy or chubby or fat. Everyone is skinny. There's no muscular women at all. Everyone is skinny. No woman who's got a stocky build, frankly nobody who does. Everyone is skinny. Everyone is skinny and generally fit.

Around the language of fatness, I’m a different anon from the original asker but I wanted to try and offer an additional perspective on the discussion. I super don’t mean this to be a criticism or condemnation of you as an individual or as a writer, but I know that this is a conversation that can be difficult to break into for a lot of people if they’ve not experienced fatphobia personally or talked to fat people they know about it. This results in thin people in particular experiencing so much discomfort and anxiety when talking about fat bodies (because the word “fat” is so heavily stigmatized and is used derogatorily extremely frequently). I was a fat kid who became a fat teen and am now a fat adult, so I’ve spent my entire life listening to incredibly well-intentioned and well-meaning thin people (and some fat people as well, especially if they struggle with body positivity or body neutrality in their own lives) try to describe my body without calling it fat, from curvy to large to plus-size to chubby to plush and on and on. And it comes from a place of love due to the fact that the word “fat” is so often only ever interpreted as an insult and they don’t want to insult you (see the ever-classic “you’re not fat, you’re beautiful!”that every fat woman probably ever has heard from a loved one at least once). And this approach isn’t without merit: people are fat in different ways. Some people are fatter than others, some people have their fat distributed in different ways (ex. Shawnie is fat and curvy, which is different from how Sergi (who I believe is described in Blood Moon as “stocky” and compared to a lumberjack, which I’ve always interpreted to mean “fat and kind of barrel-chested” or kind of like those guys who compete in the Highland Games). It’s not wrong to want or use these descriptors for fat people.

I just think that it’s worth putting out there that it’s okay to describe characters as “fat” and that some fat readers may even prefer it. In my experience, there’s a kind of exhaustion that comes from constantly having to listen to thin people dance around talking about my body or bodies like mine when I know that I’m fat and I live in a world that never lets me forget that I’m fat. And I know that, at least for myself, it can be very validating (and almost healing sometimes) to hear the word “fat” being used to describe me instead of being used against me.

I don’t mean to say all this to try and target you or change the way that you write or anything like that. I’ve just always really admired how open you are about admitting you don’t know something (because we all have things we don’t know) and learning about different perspectives and how willing you are to incorporate feedback you’ve gotten from fans into your games. I don’t mean to speak for all fat people either as we’re not monolithic and don’t all share the same experiences or opinions. I was just hoping to maybe share a perspective you might not have gotten or seen before. Love the game and you’re doing amazing!! 💕

I described Shawnie as short and curvy. I described Sergi as stocky and broad. I described Freya as stocky and soft. These descriptions obviously weren't enough, and knowing that, I can now make them better.

Compounding to this, I'm really not very good at creating visual aids. It's hard to find good stock photos, and often I pick ones which don't 100% match characters. I tried making mood boards for Blood Moon but it was way too much work and was stressing me out. So, the misunderstanding could've come from that too.

Love a great personality, someone who doesn't take themselves too seriously. Who can laugh at themselves when they goof up. Someone who is over themselves and isn't problematic. Enjoys life and wants the same for others.

Yeah, I'm a bit of a homebody. So someone who doesn't mind being home most of the time wouldn't hurt. Enjoying the simple things, quiet dinner at home with some tasty, yet terrible health-wise, dessert. Watching movies, reading books, building Lego sets, or just banging it out all day sounds fun to me.

Regarding physical factors, yes, I like my "60ish, white and chubby/stocky," daddy bears. I will date any race, I'm not saying, "only white." But admittedly, the white daddies are what I desire. I'm a Hispanic guy, so hopefully, I don't come off being racist, that's not my intent. Fur turns me on, especially those sexy treasure trails down nice round bellies. When it comes to male "members," I love all sizes. From average, to short fat ones, to long skinny ones, as long as it's attached to a man I like there's no problem. Though I hope they can get, and stay, hard for long periods of time. I find watching a man walk around with a hard c0ck incredibly sexy…

If you want desired "fantasy" characteristics; I prefer over 5'6"(my height), top 75/25, white, light brown to blonde hair, blue/green eyes, thin lips, great smile, strong chin, 5 o'clock shadow, thick neck, broad shoulders, muscular arms/forearms, strong pecs, round belly, bubble butt, thick hips/thighs, muscular calves, all covered in a reasonable amount of hair. Not really a foot guy, so yeah, don't care. lol (I, subconsciously, just described Gary Patterson, guess that's why he's my #1 guy)

HEARTSLABYUL

riddle rosehearts: super thin, his ribs are always visible. long spindly finger and knobby knees. thin, angular face and his cheeks and nose are always red. he has a pretty bad immune system.

trey clover: total opposite of riddle. tall and muscular with large, calloused hands and quite a bit of a chest. has a few scars on his hands from cooking accidents when he was younger. great immune system and health, great strength from carrying heavy things in the bakery.

cater diamond: hourglass body type with prominent collar bone and hip dips. long slender fingers and rosy face. a few scars from painting the roses red. heart shaped face with round cheeks and a button nose.

deuce spade <3: tall and slender, not very curvy but broad shoulders. he still has a bit of baby chub on their face (<3). thin but calloused fingers. scarred knees. thin but calloused feet.

ace trappola: average :/ kinda thin arms, wide feet. he's always got at least one temporary tattoo on him.

leona kingscholar: tall, angular, kinda muscular. i imagine he skips a lot of meals because he's sleeping. stocky but in a rich way. skinniness is typically a characteristic of less fortunate people (like ruggie), so leona being thicker makes sense. also, stubble. constant stubble.

ruggie bucchi: total opposite of leona. similar to riddle, thin enough to the point of his ribs always visible. he grew up very poor, so he never had a comfortable amount of food. a tiny bit of facial hair, but never much. thin calloused feet.

jack howl: like in his sprites, super jacked (heh). very much titty. wide and large feet, large calloused hands. very good for hugs.

azul ashengrotto <3: like in canon (but not his sprites for some reason), thicker body and a lil chubby. also very good for hugs. chubby cheeks and up-turned eyes. thick thighs and little feet. small hands with thick fingers. hug him >:{

jade and floyd leech: grouping them together for obvious reasons. lanky asf. very long but in an elegant way and not an awkward way. they both have calloused hands and feet, and permanently bruised knees. jade has odd scars from his adventuring and floyd's teeth.

kalim al asim: little and chubby. similar to azul, but large sturdy feet and calloused hands from the light music club. round cheeks and plump lips.

jamil viper: thin. just thin. thin lips, thin feet, thin fingers. lanky too. some of his classmates find it concerning, but he's fine (maybe). he has sturdy feet and hands from running around and doing chores/errands all day.

vil schoenheit: similar to cater, just taller. super elegant. long angular face, thick hair, very thin waist. he really said "you bring the corsets, we'll bring the cinches, no one wants a waist over- 9 inches." but honestly, barbie walked so he could run.

rook hunt: stocky and scarred, but he flaunts them like beauty marks (as he should). super calloused hands and feet, i swear this man is secretly ripped.

epel felmer: similar to rook, stocky and scarred, but from working on his family's farm instead of hunting his classmates. pretty boy 2.0. his hair is super thick and wavy, and gets knotted super easily.

IGNIHYDE

idia shroud: skinny legend. suoer angular everything, you could cut yourself on his cheekbones (/hj). iconic greek sloped nose, blue blush instead of natural red.

ortho shroud: (SPOILER) when he was a human (?), he was very kiddish. i'm talking chubby cheeks, thick fingers, chubby knees. (SPOILER OVER) as a robot, he looks like a mixture of idia and himself.

DIASOMNIA

malleus draconia: t a l l. lanky and thin in a noble and elegant way. thin feet and hands. all of their teeth are sharp, not just canines. not much to say.

lilia vanrouge: short and thin. a whole lot of scars from wars they've been in. i imagine stretch marks, not sure why, but i do. up-turned eyes and thin lips. canines are super razor sharp.

silver (vanrouge): lanky asf. lots of stretch marks. scars from sparring with his father and sebek. wide feet, but small hands?

sebek zigavolt: stocky. scars from sparring with silver, and lightning scars. big feet and hands, bith calloused.

I think the best advice I can give is to show don't tell which is something I struggle with a LOT but it really adds glitter to your work

also indulge tf out of yourself. like requests are fun and challenging yourself is great but indulge yourself any chance you get. I find that writers who indulge themselves usually cook tf out of what they're writing like??? that shit be fire. the fic is broccoli which is great but the indulgence is fkn garlic and butter sauce for the broccoli. COVER THAT SHIT WITH GARLIC AND BUTTER SAUCE!!! NOBODY IS GONNA REJECT THAT. most of the time your indulgence is someone else's indulgence and you're feeding them while feeding youself.

be realistic to a certain extent like I don't mean realistic with love because I love writing these men from a very unrealistic standpoint like yeah I know all men aren't shitty but I've never been with a man that didn't make me wanna scalp myself for accepting fake love and bullshit wrapped in pink cellophane and passed off as flowers but instead be realistic with feelings and also with sex like sex is messy and life is mundane so write about something that wouldn't necessarily be very interesting because you might not think it matters but it does

like I always have my characters take their shoes off at the door, wash their hands, and change into house clothes when they come home because that's something that I do and I think that's something that can build on the moment because while your character is washing their hands, a lot can happen around that. is MC (main character) washing her hands and chatting about where she's coming back from with her boyfriend? (we'll use Changmin as our boyfriend for this) does she hear him cursing about something from another room? what is he up to and is MC amused or is she annoyed because he never went grocery shopping and now there's nothing for dinner? does MC have an apartment or a house? an apartment okay does the apartment have a balcony? yes okay is he out on the balcony having a smoke and you can see him from the corner of your eye? can you smell his cigarette smoke? why is he smoking outside? oh you don't like the smell of smoke? okay so now we know why Changmin is outside smoking. do you smell the smoke? did he close the door or did he leave it open?

see? you can build a lot off of one mundane choice. every time. I also think it's good to sometimes stop and ask yourself "why?" and the answer doesn't have to always be good. but like sometimes asking yourself that "why" will help you build on something a lot better or even cause you to take something out of the story or it can make your character more relatable.

okay we're gonna use Changmin again for this. so let's say Changmin is MC's cubicle neighbor. she likes him. why? he's tall, he's a no nonsense guy, and he minds his business. why does she like the fact that he's tall? now when height is mentioned, I like to keep things vague because yes, Changmin is tall but is the reader tall too? it's easy to conclude that MC likes Changmin because he's tall and she's so short and petite that he dwarfs her but what if your reader is 5'11 and curvy? short and chubby? 6'1 and stocky? see? if you take the "MC is short and petite route, you may have kicked the stool from under a lot of readers. so again why does MC like Changmin? oh yes he's tall so what can you say about his height that will make every reader regardless of their height and build nod and go "ah yes" instead of feeling like crap because they're reading a reader insert story that isn't very reader insert at all. so he looks really good in his work clothes because his build is nice. why else does MC like him? he minds his business. why does he mind his business? is he pretending to mind his business because he's actually the most manipulative little shit in the office and that "no nonsense" persona is just a power flex because he knows nobody's going to challenge him because he has the power to get everyone fired? is he nice to MC? why? is he trying to find her weaknesses? does he genuinely like her?

you can ask why for just about any reason or for any character whether they play a big role or a small role.

I'm rambling but I wanna circle back to being vague. I know it's a contradiction to be vague about character descriptions but also self indulge and there's a happy medium. like if it's reader insert you can make stories that are specific, body type, hair length, skin tone but please say that in the warnings. because yeah short readers would love to read about getting tossed around, dark skinned readers would love to have Changmin notice the things about them that show that they're flustered because they're not capable of showing blush on their skin, chubby readers would like to be led to the bedroom because maybe they don't want/think Changmin could carry them. it can also be funny stuff too like with hair pulling, did Changmin accidentally pull MC's wig off and that's something they still laugh about? so yeah you don't always have to be vague but let your readers know upfront.

but honestly just go fkn crazy and have fun. fanfics are supposed to be fun and you can put a message in there too. like you can randomly decide that MC and Changmin are gonna drag fic readers who refuse to reblog content or writers who say they write for everyone but have never written a story that doesn't involve being fair-skinned, soft-haired, and skinny. see? you can do whatever you want and come up with something great.

A bit random but I wanted to thank all artists that draw short, stocky and muscular men. I feel like this body type is quite underrepresented, and it makes me quite sad since this is how I look like. I'm very short but strong-built. I'm not skinny, yet I'm not fat nor even close to being even chubby. I'm just... stocky. And quite hairy. And every time I see this body type drawn, my heart slightly jumps up. Very often the assumption is that a short guy = either thin and feminine or plus size. But there is a whole bunch of men like me who simply don't fit those descriptions.

I have special affection towards the LOTR/The Hobbit fandom due to the way people draw dwarves. Yeah I kinda look like one. And it's very nice to see this type being shown as attractive and desirable.

The definition of manlet. Short king. he is a chiwawa of a troll. Surprisingly fit tho. He looks thin but it's all muscle when you touch him because he works out to compensate for being 150 tall. He just doesn't bulk up. Also he has the most upright posture known to man because he refuses to loose a single inch of his height. Manages to look down on you despite being 5 something.

Athletic as fuck! She runs around all day fighting and taking down beasts + her diet consists of pure meat. She is on the shorter side. (still taller than karkat tho). I just imagine her like those olypian gymnastics

Kanaya:

She is tall and slim, not overly skinny tho. I think she is probably kinda awkward about her height so she crouches a little.

Terezi:

Stocky, I think she is medium height but her torso being square shaped makes her look shorter than she actually is. She literally looks like a rectangle.

Vriska:

A bitch with this much attitude has to be flat chested. Like you know the anime trope where flat girl always being really mean cos she is secretly insecure about being built like a plank of wood?? Yeah that. She is taller than average and 100% makes fun of any guy shorter than her for not being "man enough".

Equius:

STRONG . Like this guy is BUILT and the fact that he is somehow a vegetarian while looking like that?? He is tall and broad. Strong arms and shoulders. Also he probably has amazing posture like im talking army style straight shoulders puffed out chest legs straight the whole thing

Hi!, can you describe some of the character’s physical traits for example face and hair a bit more. I was shocked when I read that Vivian has long hair, I always pictured him as having short and wavy hair. Please :)

Sure! I'll try my best. I tend to be rather vague about most of my characters' physical traits and leave the rest up to the imagination, but in this case, the seasons themselves have very specific traits often related to their seasons! I'll put a read more for length. I'll just describe the Liddell family for now, so Vivian and Graham and their five children. I'll include Shannon at the very last in case anyone wants to skip over that for in-story surprises.

Vivian Eyes: Medium green Hair: Close to a sandy blond but maybe a little lighter/buttery than that, length trails past his shoulder blades a bit. You're right that it's wavy! Height: Tall? 6'2"ish? Weight: Never good at estimating weight, but he's slender with lean muscle (from walking to and from work, despite having a car) Facial shape: Somewhat round, but with a distinctive jawline. Typically shaves all facial hair Other features: Oddly shaped ear from scar, long fingers, and I'm going with "normal eyebrows" here

Graham Eyes: Brown Hair: Light brown, ever so slight wave to it as well, and it cuts off a bit past his chin. It is not cut at all one length--front is a little shorter around his face, but only marginally, and I imagine it somewhat layered Height: Tall, 6'2"ish? (Generally the same as his husband) Weight: Stocky build, good strong biceps from lifting wood all the time Facial shape: Square face, pretty strong jawline as well. He often goes for a more rugged look with his facial hair, although he keeps it trimmed so it's not a big beard and mustache. He shaves it off his neck. Other features: thick hands/fingers full of callouses, pretty thick eyebrows, and his hands and nails can get stained a lot

Sophronia Eyes: Light purple Hair: Pearl white with the light purple highlights that get more distinctive at the tips of her hair ("magic hair" is my excuse). Also, it curls into natural ringlets about halfway down and is quite long. Height: 5'11" Weight: Mostly slender, but I imagine her having somewhat of a barrel shape to her torso and a bit thicker arms and thighs Facial shape: Rounder than Vivian's, and she does share a chin with Vivian (not sure how to describe that) Other features: Her lips are very pale, she has thin eyebrows and long fingers

Eldon Eyes: Crystal blue Hair: White as fresh snow, I can't describe haircuts to save my life, but his hair is considered long? It's layered, and none really touches his neck aside from what's at the nape. He also has bangs, unlike his fathers. His hair grows in straight. Height: Tall for a 12-year-old Weight: That slender with baby roundness that just goes with young children Facial shape: Round face, with somewhat chubby cheeks. He's tall, but his face makes him seem younger somehow. Other features: Shares the winter pale lips with his sister, he'll probably have long hands as he grows. Despite being tall as kid, I feel like he'll be shorter than Howie, were they ever to become adults. His eyebrows are quite thin and probably will be all his life.

Howard Eyes: Chestnut brown Hair: Chocolate brown with red highlights. Hair is short (but has some length to sweep it to the side) and straight but quite thick. I've drawn him, but I can't show it. :( Height: Tall! Weight: He's very slim muscle, he's kind of active and sporty. Story doesn't show it often enough, but he's a climber and jumper. Facial shape: Not quite as baby faced as his siblings, and not as round (oval I guess?) and childlike because of his age. Other features: I feel like he'll have less delicate hands/fingers as his winter siblings and Vivian, but they'll still be thinner than his Daddy's. He's got thicker brows than El even as children.

Beau Eyes: Spring green Hair: Walnut brown, cut quite similar to Howie's but maybe a little longer than his older brother's by maybe an inch. It's straight and grows in a bit thinner than all the rest of the family's hair, but it's still got body to it. Height: Eh, not super tall, but like the higher end of average for a five-year-old. Weight: Average for his age, with some baby roundness still. Facial shape: Round cheeks, but his face is a tad more oval like Howie's. Other features: I feel like Beau and Howie really take after Graham with having brown hair and in Beau's case, thicker hands when he grows up. I suspect he'll be stockier too, but muscular? Not sure on that one yet. He might grow to be chubbier and probably on the cute side as an adult because the fat never leaves his cheeks. He'll share Howie's thicker eyebrows.

(He'd shave it anyway, but it looks stupid as it grows out.) Thin eyebrows.

if you have a large frame (meaning youre tall) and youre thin you wont look large. youll look thin. i'm short, i'd be stocky if i packed on muscle and i used to be chubby but i'm thin. and when youre thin, you look thin. your arms are small, your body is small, your legs are small. theres some fat and some muscle but you can see your bones under your skin even if you arent underweight. if youre thin you look thin.

Eh, it depends, hand and feet size changes relatively little and there's something to be said about your shoulders, but it's really not that big of a deal
