While I've had to deal with a lot of negative stuff lately, I just got reinvigorated right now reading a lot of early feedback for my game in development. Seeing people genuinely engage with the game and be super interested in it is giving me a lot of hope and motivation to continue building it out!

avatar Zuko AU wherein is he learns he's the Avatar only after being banished wholesale to the Earth Kingdom and immediately goes. well. fuck. and proceeds to go on the most unconventional journey to master the four elements known to man.

first stop? well, he might as well check out the Air Temples. They're a good place to hide, since he's pretty sure all three surviving nations would like him dead. he ends up in the Southern Air Temple, and winds up laying the bodies there to rest... after he spends several days searching the temple for anything pertaining to how airbenders are actually laid to rest.

he does not expect to be greeted by a ghost once he does. The spirit of Monk Gyatso becomes his airbending teacher, until one day he simply stops appearing. Zuko assumes he's finally moved on, and decides it's time for him to move on. He wanders the Earth Kingdom for awhile, while trying to keep a low profile, and winds up at the Foggy Bottom Swamp.

...where there are apparently waterbenders who don't want to kill him. Sure, he'll take it. Huu is... eccentric, and he's not really sure he agrees with his uh. viewpoint on pants (or lack thereof) but he is a good teacher. after awhile, Huu tells him he should travel on to the Si Wong Desert so Zuko is just like. sure why the fuck not. and goes to the desert.

he gets taken in by one of the sandbending tribes there, and learns earthbending from them. he's pretty sure he prefers living in the desert over the swamp. the sandbenders he's staying with are nice enough, even if some of their younger members seem... well, assholes. said assholes sell him out one day, so he has to leave the desert.

well. now what?

(all the while, he's leaving behind the most eccentric string of rumors about the Avatar known to man.)

SAVOIR FAIRE: I'd worry in Necktie's place, lieutenant can get quite creative with a piece of fabric~ I have seen several cases where people were mixing Electrochemistry and Horrific Necktie and tbf they're pretty easy to mix, but there is a slight difference: EC is your pleasure center which wants you to feel good no matter the source, while Necktie is your imaginary drinking buddy who want's you to party hard like young people do (by getting drunk/hight, sleeping with younger women and doing stupid shit for lulz).

So I'm pretty sure our *bratan* won't be Kim's biggest fan (and vice versa), EC on the other hand…

still thinking about the Thalla fight because. what ACTUALLY happened in my playthrough was that both Kai and Marius went down, and I forgot my heal/revive so Cynewulf proceeded to take the ogre down by herself, with her little bow and her little dodge, and then she ducked back into the alley where the fight started, revived her buddies, regenerated some health and then they went back out on the street and killed the rest of the Sparrowhawks together.

and like. I keep thinking about Kai and Marius coming to and realizing that not only is the envoy not dead, she has taken Thalla down on her own, David and Goliath-style (holy shit his corpse is right there and he has no eyeballs left to speak of, it's all arrows), and all she needs is like. to take a breather.

like I think maybe at this point the realization occurs that the funny pink mushroom girl is also one of the emperor's most deadly people. like she's had a rough start in Dawnshore but she is, in fact, capable of both Incredible Killing and Incredible Survival and now that the adjustment period is over we're starting to see her actual capabilities and it's kind of a lot.

I also think she might get into the Paradisan spirit (by which I mean: violence and power plays) and like. cut off Thalla's head and nail it to a wall someplace prominent. to send a little message. you know she's really getting sick of being talked down to and jumped on the streets Go Back To Aedyr-style

cql does not do a good job of sympathizing jzx and i stand by that until his death like he is one of, if not thee, blandest and most annoying characters in the drama. jc might be grating but at least he's got depth, at least he's proactive and meaningful in his regression... i'm sure the novel does a better job at making jzx seem marginally endearing but as it stands...what even is his "character development" beyond him choosing to stop being the world's biggest cunt to jyl. conveniently at the exact moment she wants to leave jinlintai to see wwx too don't think i forgot that! whatever diegetic reasoning you can ascribe to his intentions/behavior, the reality is that he just ends up embodying the status quo and all its corruption, his passive enactment of it becomes nearly active when he is constantly seeing it and doing nothing and yet he is one of the most powerfully positioned young sect heirs in the cultivation world. and i would actually use his attempt to protect mianmian from wc and his terrible gf as example of this. he speaks up in a moment when there is nothing else to be done, when the threat is ALSO to his own life, and it's still real comrade wwx who sacrifices himself to save her. because wwx is the blueprint for true heroism, which is literally part of the story's thesis. jzx is so unwilling to meaningfully sacrifice anything. later emphasized by mianmian's defection over her loyalty to wwx and jzx's inaction in the face of it despite mianmian having been HIS most loyal servant up until that point and that he himself can't be disinherited from his own sect. that's why the "but they were just being filial/they couldn't go against their sects" argument falls flat, because the story goes out of its way to prove that justice will require sacrifice, will be punished, and that personal risk isn't an excuse for complicity. which is also why lwj, the biggest and most sympathetic proponent of wanting to remain filial and righteous even when these things conflict, comes to regret his unwillingness to fully commit to actualizing those ideals the same way wwx did, even when lwj knew wwx was right about the wens. but every mildly heroic gesture jzx makes is so impotent and meaningless in context that i don't even register his death as a tragedy on its own lol it's just thematic punishment. when i thought wwx killed him i felt sooo bad...for wwx.

You ever think about how gargantuan Supernatural is that there are AUs and widespread inside jokes about episodes? That there are enough people here to find something special in some episodes to build mini communities?

Even from a non-heller perspective; if I said oh 1x13 was batshit insane but it added so much depth to the sweet old romantic side of Dean that he desperately denies existing—more than a handful of people would know that I'm talking about Route 666. The batshit insanity of the racist truck ghost murderer, not outweighing the fact that Dean loved Cassie so much, he told her the big family secret, the no. 1 rule John Winchester has drilled since they were children, and ended up splitting with her anyways.

4x17 and 5x04 in particular took up the fandom by a storm for a while, because Supernatural created AUs within the actual text all for the sake of filling in the most important arc (at the time): the Michael vs Lucifer, Heaven vs Hell Apocalypse. I still sometimes remember It's a Terrible Life's reference to Dean and Sam being Smith and Wesson and feel absolutely sick to my stomach. And The End? That's one of my comfort watches right there. The fact that these two episodes alone gave us such a different characterization of the cast and brought a new setting to mind is absolutely mind boggling, and since there's just so many fans here means those tropes and side quests still live.

Does all this make sense? idk like I get that the show doesn't have the best reputation (as it should, honestly, I wouldn't wish this curse upon my worst enemy) but there's something so beautiful about being alive and within a community that really lives and breathes, y'know? I find it all such a touching aspect to humanity.
