i am here today to talk about HORRIBLE OVERSIGHT in the pete fandom we NEED to correct our ways and see the light

this is a pha khao ma (spelling up for debate). it's a waistcloth commonly worn in south and southeast asia — you may have heard of it as a lungi / longyi. it's a rectangular, light, soft piece of cloth that (mostly) men tie around their (mostly) waists to wear in hot humid climates because it's very comfy and breezy and dries fast.

some fun facts:

it's very common to wear right out of the bath / shower because the dampness stays on your skin for a while after so this helps air it out

underwear is ✨ optional ✨ (although really mostly only at home. the fear of being pantsed in public is universal, after all)

it's often worn at home, but people wear it out as well and it is especially common in rural communities. if you've got a bunch of old uncles sitting outside on a veranda in a small town, they're all maybe sitting around in pha khao mas

(let me follow this up with: while it is common in rural regions, people in rural areas all over thailand do also just wear shirts and shorts and pants 😂 it is merely an option, not a rule)

what you see is the casual version. there are much more formal versions, and fashionable versions, and they are apparently having a resurgence with the thailand youth rn

the plaid-like patterning is a specific design that has centuries of history in thailand! different regions produce styles of designs with vibrantly different colors and dyes, and they're very proud of it

there's many ways to tie it: in these pictures, pete has it tied so that it hangs down well past his knees, but you can hoist them up to mostly be around your upper legs (leaving the knees showing). this gives you a TON more mobility to, say, run around or climb trees or beat up people

So how about Vegas' Pete fixation and his obsession with the mundane. Has he swooned at Pete tying his shoelaces yet? Has he insisted on watching Pete brush his teeth? Has he followed Pete around while Pete's watering the plants, like a weirdo?

Can Vegas be in the room during Pete’s medical appointments can Vegas taste Pete’s sweat after a meal can Vegas put his fingers under Pete’s nostrils while he’s sleeping to feel him snore how would Pete react if Vegas injected saline under his skin—

Thank you for the lovely question, Immy, you know this is a favorite topic of mine. 😅

I just think there’s a pervading amazement with the physical reality of having a Pete in the house and everything that comes with him. And sometimes, because it’s Vegas, that comes out in ways that are invasive and probably too much (not that Pete minds).

So for instance, sometimes Pete grabs his bath towel and Vegas says, “I’ll join you”—only he doesn’t mean sharing the shower, he just wants to sit back against the bathroom counter and watch Pete bathe as the steam thickens the air and makes a gentle labor of breathing. You know?

More broadly, Vegas very much enjoys watching Pete wash up and brush his teeth and shave and do all sorts of little hygiene things. Pete has multiple times found him leaning against the wall outside the bathroom, arms crossed to feign nonchalance, unblinking eyes bright and edged with fascination.

(Pete would not say that Vegas follows him around like a cat, but only because Vegas would sulk if he did.)

At some point—to Vegas’s delight and Macau’s dismay—Pete stops locking the bathroom door altogether.

Many such cases, especially in the early months. Vegas has an uncanny sense of what Pete’s doing in the next room, based purely on the little grunts and hums he makes as he goes about his day. Vegas hates Pete's cheap instant coffee but he fucking loves to watch him drink it, will stroke his throat to feel him swallow. Vegas sends Pete photos shot from a distance sometimes, specifically so he can watch the motion Pete’s fingers do when he zooms in on a picture on his phone. (Sometimes he takes Pete’s hand in his and imagines how his fingers look under the skin.)

Pete vascillates between feeling bemused, flattered, and slightly flustered about all this. There is something in satiating Vegas’s desires just by dint of existing in his presence. Pete’s only ever been worth what he’s capable of doing--never simply what he is and how he’s known.

And he couldn’t help the way his eyes were now locked on Vegas’ lips, as he pulled the bottom one in, and kneaded the flesh with his teeth while he looked over paperwork his pa had left behind. Pete didn’t know if it was the Thailand heat that was making him sweat, or him fighting back the urge to crawl into Vegas’ lap, and take the abused petal between his own teeth.

“I can feel you staring,” Vegas stated, with as much care as asking Khun about his newest carp. He flipped another page of the stapled stack of papers in his hand, and shifted on the outdoor reclining chair as he did.

Pete shifted in the wicker chair he had pulled nearby, and began flipping recklessly in the newest book he’d borrowed from his lover. “I was just checking to see if you needed to come inside, that’s all.” Pete flicked his eyes back at Vegas, and wasn’t surprised to see his eyes still scanning the newest page.

“No legacy is so rich as honesty,” Vegas said matter of factly, and Pete cursed under his breath.

“Stupid tattoo.” Pete muttered the words to himself, but didn’t miss the light woosh of air from Vegas’s nose as he did.

“I love that tattoo.” Pete knew he did – if the constant bruises and bite marks told him anything. Vegas finally sat the stack of papers in his lap, and focused his full attention on Pete. “What’s going on, love?” Pete couldn’t help the way his skin prickled with goosebumps at the pet name, and the warmth that curled up inside his chest.

Pete picked at the skin beside his finger, and kept his head bowed. “It’s nothing. Just something silly.” Pete must have said the wrong thing, because soon he saw Vegas’ legs coming into view, and felt the callused fingers – that knew how to take him apart – slide under his jaw, and lift his head so their eyes could meet.

The furrow of Vegas’ brow told Pete so much, yet so little at the same time. “I know you, Pete. It’s not silly if it’s got you this distracted.” Vegas’ words were so stern, yet soft; it made Pete want to melt just a bit into the hand – that was now allowing its thumb to rub the underside of Pete’s jaw. The digit was just moving slowly back and forth, but Pete felt the ghost of pressure when it came close to his throat.

Pete felt his brain go a little fuzzy, but was instantly pulled out of that space when a voice roaring in anger came barreling through the haze.

“Stupid boy.”

Pete jerked and effectively knocked Vegas’ hand loose from his jaw, and sent the neglected book tumbling down onto the stone patio floor. “I- Macau should be here in a little bit for his weekend visit,” Pete’s words came out rushed and a bit too loud, as he tried to hide the truth behind his change in subject. “We should get lunch started. You know how much Macau misses your cooking.” Pete caught Vegas lifting a brow up in question, before he dropped his hand, and stepped away to allow Pete to actually stand instead of his current flailing.
