LIVEREAD: WAKFU, THE GREAT WAVE [TOME 2, Chapters 1-6]
Wow it sure has been a while and a mental health episode and a cancellation and a blocking 20 people and a failed attempt at translating a book (I WILL! I PROMISE! AFTER I WRITE MY COURSE PAPER) since my last post huh.
...Oh well. It's a good thing I waited because we got some nice info I can share here.
And yes, I skipped chapters 1 and 2 of this tome. I am here mostly for julith and crepinjurgens, not Tot's wild ride.
All I can say about chapter 3 is that I think Julith's ressurection was probably not a perfect one. I think she might just be a mindless puppet. It doesn't feel... normal, that she should stop like this; while my commentary on chapter 4 stops at my surprise for the new nickname for 'Salar. It's nice to finally have an official one, hehe.
Now to the meat and potatoes of this blog.
The fucking gasp I gusped reading this. Sorry I mean sorry I mean sorry I mean. "my little salesman" hes so... It's unbearable how he is. It's genuinely so hard. I wish I had commentary on what exactly this makes me feel, but you needed to be inside my head all those months ago to fully get it. He's calling the 600yo guy that pretends to be his dad his little salesman. If I was joris i'd just take us both out...
I'm still waiting for the long awaited long predicted Joris Jurgen crashout, chat. btw I love how the translators didn't even bother with any onamatopoeia or quirky text. Like Sure. Everyone in the world knows what bonfll and hĂŠ mean.
Joris... kill them. and be reincarnated as a lotus flower.
I will be the first to say that it'll be sad if Tot forgot the ecaflip reincarnation lore of his own franchise. but for now im choosing to read this as just cute banter.
Cutie patootie...
For a while I hoped that maybe we'd finally see and example of a k0--mortal character we knew reincarnating and ngl, I really hope this is like... some sort of a next life for Lilotte? All that reincarnation lore just not to implement it for angst purposes feels like a waste.
It's probably not lilotte even in spirit, but a man can dream jdlgdlg.
Honestly.... im mostly screenshotting this here bc I feel like this is a nice screenshot to ref from. sjgdkljfg
I wish I had more to say but they're so nice... And also, I wonder if they saw this ouginak. Shouldn't they be freaking tf out too? Unless, as always Tot Forgot. Oh well.
Big fan of Joris being haunted
Also a big fan of Kerubim being haunted
Inside me are two wolves. One of them thinks using orphan mistreatment as a plot point is extremely cliche. Another wolf thinks Joris's love might turn all these orphans into post-waven's military supersolders which would make my jokes about him being "training and conscripting orphans" level of evil literally real.
It would be so awesome. It would be so cool.
To my knowledge, this is the first time Joris's surname is dropped in Wakfu.
I feel a bit bad for thinking this, but Joris saving the orphans is still a bit cliche. I hope it goes somewhere more interesting later. Like him imparting some insane beliefs onto those kids.
IVE BEEN SAYING FOR YEARS THAT joris wouldn't want to be called master outside of work. I think he prefers just "Joris" when it comes to kids and housekeepers.
I love his impulsive idealism. Genuinely. he WOULD pick up random orphans and be like "you live with me now".
This also confirms to me that crepinjurgens are rich as hell. Though we already kinda knew that.
SHE LOOKS SO SMUG hjghskjdghsdg... While Joris is still the cutest ever.
I love to see happiness vaporate from his eyes.
also ATCHAM AND KERUBIM ATCHAM AND KERUBIM worried worried atcham and kerubim. <33 HEART.
...
Sorry I didn't have any in-depth commentary. I'm not sorry for my absence of translation struggles though sgjfgd. I've been very unhappy in this fandom, and had a very unhealthy relationship with it, so I've been working to change that. I wish I could say more about what I meaan exactly, but it's quite boring honestly. Then there's the fact that modern Krosmoz kinda sucks ass (yet all the people who concentrate on it sucking ass are mostly unbearable and annoying despite being objectively right).
If you're still here, and consider me a friend or a mutual, thank you for sticking around. Even if just for this blog! You don't have to follow my personal accounts to be my friend or mutual.

Hyper-analysis of Lightbulb season 2 episode 12
Part 1
(This is my very extra delve into lightbulbs character and arc during the episode)
We start the episode with Marshmallow getting kicked out of the challenge. Paintbrush was understandably sad upon loosing a friend they were remotely close to. Lightbulb however was upset over loosing Baxter, paralleling Paintbrushes grief but more exaggerated. I like to imagine Baxter works as a sort of Emotional support animal that Lightbulb connect herself to, so she was actually upset upon loosing him. But made it extra to be comical because she doesn't like being actually emotional in front of others. This will be one out of many times she would hide her negative feelings through positivity and jokes throughout the entire episode.

 Lightbulb notices Paintbrush is genuinely upset over loosing marshmallow and decides to connect to their emotion using Baxter

This doesnât work because even though the intention is to cheer up Paintbrush, Paintbrush sees it as another nonsensical Lightbulb moment. Paintbrush expresses the idea of the splitting teams being a good idea for the two.

This visibly upsets Lightbulb, we learn later in episode 14-15 that Lightbulb easily feels lonely and loves her friends a LOT. She never thought of Painbrush as less of a friend even when Paintbrush was constantly angry at her. So now she sees they didnât see her the same.

Paintbrush talks about how they were the actual leader and Lightbulbs was just..there⌠with their nonsensicality. This will impact Lightbulb and will be very important for later. Paintbrush says theyâre still friends but Lightbulb thinks that Paintbrush just says that to make her feel better.

Lightbulb is the most visibly upset weâve ever seen her in front of someone

She realizes that sheâs actually showing she is upset and quickly corrects it using her positivity and jokesÂ

But the moment Paintbrush leaves she instantly allows herself to look sad again.

This conversation will affect lightbulbs decisions and problem solving for the entire episode. This also begins to show her toxic positivity and how she tends to hide negative emotions.
Cut to the next time we see her, sheâs getting soda from Testtube
âI drink when Iâm depressedâ This is the first time she has ever vocalized depressionâŚ

She instantly stops herself and clarifies that she isnât. You can see in her face that she definitely panicked a bit realizing her facade may have slipped. (which, if im correct, is the first time her facade has actually slipped in front ofothers)
So she turns it into a joke.

She coughs out Baxter (somehow) further implementing it was a joke but she has her emotional support crab! Â

She says âhe never gets depressedâ as a projection of a part of her. Her toxic positivity makes her feel like she isn't allowed to feel sad.. So she projects that part of her to the Baxter, the crab she's grown really attached to.

Lightbulb wacky hijinx insue and her and Testtube get sent back to the past. Upon this new realization that time travel actually is a thing and her first instinct is to joke about the situation. Â

One of the realizations I had while I was rewatching the episode to make this is the fact that Lightbulb seems super excited to be back in time to season 1. Now it could just be the coolness of time travel.. but think about it. Lightbulb wasnât the only one who was quirky and chaotic, the entire season was full of characters that were insane and lessâŚsad. She states later that âthings arenât so simple anymoreâ showing that she does in fact miss the simplicity of the first season when it wasnât so emotionally complicated. Â

Anyways to continue, she waves to paintbrush bc this version of paintbrush still âlikes/wantsâ her. This is her past, and showing a time where she belonged more. This also shows she still rlly like paintbrush even after their âfalling outâ (in her eyes) Â

When test tube smacks her hand away she realizes this is not âherâ paintbrush. Not the one she left behind. This was a less morally complicated one, one that also partook in all the nonsensicallity and chaos with her. In a way, Lightbulb misses that simplicity. Â

After this realization she hears Salt and pepper talking, salt says âoff that?? no way!â Kinda like how Paintbrush questioned Lightbulbs judgement 24/7, which is why she looks almost irritated. The emotions of the conversation with paintbrush is literally constantly spilling out of her through these mini expressions. This entire episode is affected by that single argument and their dynamic of logic vs Chaos. Â Â

This one is obvious, Lightbulb sees salt and pepper as her and Paintbrush. She pushed them off together as this is what she wants to do with Paintbrush. She wants to stick together because she herself likes working with others. This judgement is made entirely by her mental state at this point. We all know she wants to stay with Paintbrush and teamwork their way to the end. And this is just her way of expressing that desire.Â

Now time to go in the future! Here she meets the cast of Inanimate Insanity Infinity, and theyâre all like her, nonsensical, whimsy, chaotic.

 A bunch of character introductions later and we get to see another instance of Lightbulbs struggles with emotions and understanding how to deal with them. Testtube shows signs of distress and the first thing Lightbulb does is make a nonsensical joke to attempt to help her and breaks the calculator. Only for it to backfire and anger Testtube.

This leads to another person being mad at Lightbulb for her hyper and chaotic personality. Leading to her feeling more of a disconnect with the world sheâs from. Â

Eventually Lightbulb takes leadership as sheâs used to, but now her team is like her.. she didnât like the intense competitive environment of the game that only grew tenfold after season 1. She just wants to have fun with friends that like being with her.

 More instances of her fitting in more here and living the ideal she wishes was realistic the reaction they have to Baxter. They all love Baxter and let Lightbulb talk about him. While in her world everyone ignored Baxter or really cared about him until later.

 This place is perfect to Lightbulb, everyone is like her. Here Lightbulb can just have fun and enjoy friendship without complexity. And so she gets to live out her dream, a competition that no one is competitive or sad. Just fun. This is a form of escapism to flee that disconnect she feels from her world. Â

i havenât played the quest but iâm very curious why youâd think it sucks ass (will read ur reply after i play it if u do respond. no pressure!)
honestly i can't even pinpoint a specific thing for me it was just that the overall execution was really bad? or unpolished. it felt like reading/playing through a rough draft/bullet point summary of something that could have been good if executed with more care and given like at least 2 or 3 acts to actually flesh itself out. like i actually liked the start of it but then the story really started speedrunning out of nowhere.
i am genuinely undecided if the story itself was truly "bad" bc it's different from the bad i felt with natlan's aq/everyone loves mavuika shit. there were several points with a lot of potential/interest but they just glossed over everything, which is like. the exact opposite of what people were hoping for out of this story. but those potentially good points might only be there bc of the literal YEARS of lore to build up to this point. so to see it be glazed over and "resolved" in such a half hearted way makes it feel almost insulting lol.
more specific spoilerly things under the cut
evil durin not actually getting to resurrect and at best do some goofy villain mimic murder framing shit was such a cop out. i want to SEE the evil dragon damn it and clearly now we never will!!!!
the resolution with mini durin in general just felt like such a cop out ending it COULD have been good if that entire part was fleshed out more, but little dude just showed up at the end and said yeah let's do this!!!!!!!
I also feel like evil durin wasn't really given like. a chance? he was described as an angry child and then completely waved off as a completely evil entity that must die/fuse with mini "good" durin. I feel like previous arcs gave him a lot more nuance (ESPECIALLY from subject 2 parallels and simulanka/mini durin's entire existence) that was just ignored so we could have a clear bad guy to blame everything on
actually ties in with my above point about never getting to see the evil dragon. I feel like we never truly confront durin which kind of felt like. should have been the Big Thing that happens in albedo's story but nah
they really bamboozled us with the trailer lol it painted a compleeeeeetely different picture from what actually ended up happening like all those bad ass scenes with albedo looking all menacing and shit? tame af and a completely different context in the actual quest
i wouldn't have hated the "reveal" that the whole murder set up was actually a long term plan to lure out evil durin if it was revealed more subtly... and maybe if so many people weren't actually in on it/figured it out... i was actually enjoying the quest up until the fake herta scene and then it just went into a dump of "no yeah we expected this" and then speedran the rest like. okay? glad everything went according to your perfect plan albedo
mondstadt invasion sequence felt so poorly implemented and animated lol but it could have been good if it was even half of what the natlan invasion sequence was like (genuinely the only thing natlan did well). like damn give it at least one proper cutscene that actually makes it look like the city is being invaded
I did like the idea of rotating through the different playable characters defending the city but again implemented so poorly i did not feel any urgency with it. also please never make me play an amber/mika duo ever again
also didn't help that they spent pretty much the entire invasion info dumping the main lore points that led up to this situation like please show don't tell
venti felt somewhat. out of character? in a way that rubbed me the wrong way. like he was too involved. made a lot of things too convenient. or like. it's a bit too common knowledge now that he's barbatos? not exactly sure what it was but I actually did not enjoy venti's presence for once
i liked the hexenzirkel trials bit and that boss fight is fun but it felt like we spent 5 seconds there. there should have at least been a domain leading up to the boss
also spent like 5 seconds speedrunning the resolution with mini durin like okay.......... sure.............. #alchemyYay
honestly everything that happened after the fake herta scene felt like a blur of a nothingburger that also somehow had a lot of lore in it but all the interesting parts of that lore happened off screen so it's really nothing
could literally hear someone yelling in the background of this quest going "OKAYYYY WRAP IT UP MOVE IT ALONG WE GOT OTHER SHIT TO DO"
stop dropping interesting one-liners of lore at the end of quests!!! what do you MEAN rhinedottir ate the ruler of life!!!!!

Touching her implement, she found and extinguished the torches and candles around the patio. âWeâre here to protect you,â Mavourneen said. âThereâs no need to extinguish any fire.â They were so good at lying. It took her a few seconds to figure out how they might be misleading her.
help i don't know how they're misleading her :( getting a bad grade at pact reading comprehension. what being sleepytired does to a motherfucker
i'm less biased towards it than to maggie's because there's less people bleeding and dying. the faerie feature is fun taking little notes in my brain for when i manage to get around to answering that ask about why the Creatchures in pact are fun. you know how reading worm will permanently ruin other cape fiction for you. like "huh where are the traumagenic powers why aren't the powers traumagenic" and so on. pact is gonna do that for me but with ghosts and faeries and shit. i'm gonna walk into any other fantasy novel and be surprised if the pact faeries aren't in there. extremely endeared to the artificially placed environment and how clearly it's communicated that these are Old Ass Things eternally talking over your head because they're playing a game that's been going on longer than you've been alive or will be alive. the callback to the gendered role assigned to the chalice in the fucked up and bad gender roles chapter is nice. there's more coherent analysis i could probably be getting out of it wrt the gendered violence necessary to artificially prolong the structure of the family the duchamps have going but i am So Fucking Seepy Tired so i'll just microwave it in the back of my brain for now. but i do enjoy that like. waves hands incoherently. we got the maggie interlude (little horror story abt girl being sucked into it all on her own just bc she was in the wrong place at the wrong time) so it's fun to follow with a contrasting interlude abt a long-running family which demonstrates how integral the magic system is to replicating violent family structures each generation and keeping the cycles going. your grandmother was manipulated and your mother was manipulated and your aunt was manipulated and you're manipulated and you all know it but you're still bound 2 do it to the next girl! also i like hildr. fun design.
ok finished arc 3. does anyone have any arc 3 pact questions for me. no i did not finish answering the arc 2 questions but [thru gritted teeth] that's Fine and the important part is Having Fun

Wave one: PreHiatus
I made my first wave of designs on January 10th of 2019.
Evening Out With Your Girlfriend

My wave one design for evening out is one of few shoe bases that underwent no redesigning in future waves! Wave four adds to this design but doesnât modify anything from the base pictured above. The color palette I pulled as directly as I could from the album art, with the green foxing stripe emulating the green line of text of the name of the album on its cover. The pink ticket-stub design was chosen because thereâs one on the album, as well as other scraps of paper. Overall I wanted this design to feel youthful and fun while still giving off that broken hearted, dirty punk, trying to impress a girl in a greasy diner feel.
Take This to Your Grave

This wave one design pulls black and teal from the album cover. I wanted to include patterns but I wanted them colorless and simple, so I used black and white checkered for the laces and black and gray checkered for the eyestay. The side stripe is blue glitter, blue to match the âfall out boyâ text on the album, glitter because I believe it was my only option to get this color. The quarters are actually the real brick directly off the album, but as you can see it came out grainy and terrible! Both the blue glitter and the awful quarters didnât live past wave one.
My Heart Will Always Be The B-side to My Tongue

A rare pair of slip-ons! Back in the early designs I tried my best to diversify the shoe types Vans had to offer. I think the idea was simpler shoes for more minor works (slip-ons, eras) and more classic shoes for albums (Old Skool, Sk8 highs). Youâll find that this doesnât last bc I largely found the simpler shoes too limiting. The colors are basic reds and browns pulled off the art, and the roses and lace patterns I used to attempt a romantic but scorned feel you see in the music and artwork. I ended up not liking this design bc while it wasnât bad it didnât feel like my heart. Too disconnected.
From Under the Cork Tree

Another slip on that wouldnât last. I made the colors basic and centered around the main design, the golden keyhole art from the cork tree era. I ditched this bc it felt inspired by cork tree but not based enough in the actual album. Also, it managed to feel too complicated and too simple at the same time. Underwhelming!
Infinity on High

Another base design that stayed the same from the first try. Pulled primary colors off the album and went with Starry Night for the quarters because of 1. The matching colors, 2. The night sky imagery captured by the album, 3. The Van Gogh tie-in. The checkerboard sunflower eyestay wasnât for any reason I can necessarily articulate. Vibes. This one is my favorite. (But itâs my favorite album too, so, go figure.)
Folie a Deux

The red is obvious. The yellow and brown accents are from the bears. The crazed scribbling design on the quarters add a pattern that gives off the moderately insane feeling from the album. This base will also stay the same until one section of it changes in wave four.
Believers Never Die: Volume One

I ended up liking very little of this. The blue here felt too bright compared to the art, and while I liked the skeleton imagery using that art in particular was a no for me. Also, the cropping of it around the side stripe is shitty. The patterned eyestay isnât bad, but further designs will implement better use of pattern.

âroad trip with ateez
hongjoong
driver #1
gets stressed out easily so he relies on seonghwa for moral and emotional support
almost broke the steering wheel a couple times bc of how hard he was gripping it
heâs used the âif you guys donât stop i will turn this car back aroundâ line one too many times in a span of an hour
when hongjoong isnât driving, heâs either sleeping or trying to drown out the other members by blasting music from his headphones
had to implement a â10 minute ruleâ at a rest stop bc last time yeosang took almost 30 minutes trying to decide what snacks to buy
threatened to leave anyone behind if they werenât back in 10 minutes
wooyoung scoffed and said he was lying
he also cried when hongjoong actually did leave him behind luckily seonghwa convinced him to drive back
absolutely refuses to hand anyone the aux cord, especially mingi
yelled at san when he accidentally kicked hongjoongâs chair, causing him to hit his head on the steering wheel
this man is tired and just wants to get to the hotel asap
âitâs not about the destination itâs about the journey my ass, if i have to spend another minute in this van i will explodeâ
seonghwa
in charge of navigation and also driver #2
is pretty chill throughout the entire trip, heâs patient with the younger members but will pat hongjoongâs shoulder in solidarity
takes pictures of the scenery a lot
âseonghwa thatâs just a pile of dirtâ
âitâs pretty shhâ
heâs the one who breaks up any arguments that happens during the trip
somehow someway he put mingi and wooyoung in time out for 20 minutes
yunho sits directly behind seonghwa and sometimes yunho will feed him a few chips
he has free reign over the aux bc heâs the only one who hongjoong can trust to not play anything weird
doesnât nap often, but when he does heâs woken up by hongjoong frantically shaking him
âi hate to wake you up but can you please drive the rest of the way, i need to pass out before i lose my mindâ
has trouble fitting his legs under the steering wheel bc this man is long
had to slam on the brakes once bc a deer ran across the road and he screamed
yunho
sits in the middle row with san and mingi aka chaos just waiting to happen
had to hold san back a couple times bc he want to fight mingi
his favorite game to play is i spy
âi spy with my little eye something that is smallâ
â...hongjoong..?â
âcorrect!â
âalright listen here you little shitââ
whenever the van stops at a stoplight, yunho always waves at the cars next to them or at the people walking down the street
he gets sad when no one waves back
saw a dog once and he was so excited the van almost tipped over
yunho drinks a lot of water so he always has to go to the bathroom
they were nowhere near a rest stop so he considered peeing in an empty bottle but seonghwa threatened to kick him out of he did
he held it in for the next hour and practically jumped out of the van before hongjoong could even put it in park
yeosang
heâs just straight up vibing
he has his earphones in and snacks to nibble on, heâs living his best life
stole one of sanâs pillows and used it as a prop up to watch movies on his phone
heâs pretty quiet during most of the trip, but he gets just as heated when wooyoung pulls him in to play a game with the rest of the 99 liners
didnât speak to wooyoung for a whole hr bc he lost against san and mingi so they had to buy them snacks at the next rest stop
he sits in between jongho and wooyoung in the back row, so sometimes heâll grab their hands and just play with their fingers when heâs bored
is torn between jumping out the window or throwing wooyoung out of the van
he gets distracted really easily so he almost didnât notice hongjoong pulling out of the rest stop until he heard seonghwa yelling at him to get in
falls asleep to the sound of jongho humming next to him
munches on a lot of snacks and is the sole reason why their snack supply is almost depleted by the time they get to the hotel
he was the one who gave yunho the idea to pee in the bottle
originally he was in charge of navigation but it was given to seonghwa bc yeosang accidentally led them to this old abandoned warehouse
san
he brought like 4 pillows and 3 blankets to cuddle with, hongjoong stole at least 1 of each
heâs pretty giddy during the entire trip, the only one who doesnât take a nap
likes to make a bunch of little noises while snuggling into his pillows
never ever put him next to mingi ever again bc those two are a ticking time bomb
theyâre always playing games and flicking the loser on the forehead
one time san flicked mingi so hard his head recoiled and hit the window, the entire van burst into laughter (even hongjoong cracked a tiny smile)
he asked if he could drive but was instantly shot down by all of the members
he wouldnât stop pouting
when sanâs not messing around, heâs either cuddling into mingi or yunho or maneuvering himself so that he was laying on both of them
heâs fed at every member in the car at least once, holding a chip up to their face until they ate it
his little yells or screams scares the shit out of seonghwa and hongjoong that theyâve both almost swerved off the road a few times
got his mouth taped shut bc of it
âi nwefdd to ooj thu wehwoomâ
â...what?â
âi nwefdd to oof thu wehwoomâ
âyou need to use the restroom?â
âjongho how the fuck did you understand himââ
mingi
way way way too hyped
heâs practically squished against the window but is that going to put a damper on his mood? no
would occasionally push himself on top of san just to annoy him
always asks for the aux cord but no one hears himÂ
when heâs bored he just starts spouting nonsense so yeosang sometimes has to lean forward and cover his mouth
he almost got his mouth taped shut too
likes to wriggle in his seat and it makes the van move from side to side
when he was the first one back to the van at the rest stop, he just kept shifting the car back and forth and seonghwa almost had a heart attack when he saw the van shaking
breaks out into a rap at the most random times
has hit his head on the roof of the van one too many times heâs surprised he didnât have a concussion
steals snacks from san when he isnât looking
fogs up the window and doodles little hearts on it
âlook itâs a heart!â
âlooks like a lump of shââ
âyeosang!â
wooyoung
ceo of âare we there yetâ and âhow much longerâ
itâs a surprise he hasnât been thrown out onto the road
screams so loudly when he loses a game
âyou cheated!â
âno i didnât you just suck!â
they were running out of tape at this point
always asking for something even tho he sits in the very back
âseonghwa can you hand me a bag of chips?â
âhongjoong can you turn the ac up itâs hot back hereâ
âseonghwa can you hand me a bottle of waterâ
âseonghwa iâm done with this can you hold it?â
gets sulky when yeosang chooses to sleep instead of playing with him
takes pictures of the other members sleeping
drew a mustache on sanâs face when he took a nap and would not stop laughing about it for the rest of the trip
complains about his legs cramping up and yeosang kicked him in response
throws chips and gummies at seonghwaâs head for funsies
jongho
completely unbothered
honestly the epitome of well behaved child
hongjoong actually thanked him when they got to their hotel
however he wasnât allowed the aux cord either because the minute he puts a ballad on, itâs over for all of them
so he just hums quietly to himself the whole time
will occasionally reach over and poke yeosangâs cheek
dude idk what else to say about jongho heâs just chilling
except for that one time he told hongjoong to stop the van only so he could jump out and take dozens of pictures of the sunset
but he looked really cute and excited w his little camera out so no one could really be upset with him
when he takes a nap he either falls asleep against the window or bent over yeosangâs lap
not a fan of sweet things so heâs always snacking on like...takis or beef jerky and downing a bunch of energy drinks everyone is lowkey worried about him
doesnât have his license yet but was a strong candidate to be driver #2

The forbidden crack! Untamed prompts: 16/?
FMA AU meets âThe Wind Risesâ AU : âI still remember every dayâ
[crazy idea #1: if you are familiar with FMA: Brotherhood (superior in every way) you probably are too young or too smart to remember the original 2003 FMA clusterfuck series but iâm neither young nor smart so here is my take on one of my favorite animated movies of all times âThe Conqueror of Shamballaâ BUT the story doesnât start in 1923 Germany but somewhere around 1923 Japan. If you are familiar with this movie and the 2003 series you will know Ed Elric has moved from London to Munich and started living there frequently interacting with a family of rocket scientists (sounds crazy if you are only knowledgeable with FMA: B, but⌠trust me). So i thought, âwhat if our protagonist (in this case WWX) travels from China to Japan to work on some airplanes instead?â]
[crazy idea #2: âThe Wind Risesâ from Ghibli is set in that historical period right? so what if we make transmigrated WWX work his engineering magic on some aircrafts before any conflict can actually take place? precisely between the end of the Taisho period (1912-1926) and the beginning of the Showa period (1926-1989), when the desire for innovation and the new technological advancements could be implemented while at peace.]
[obviously, this is just a prompt, and I donât feel particularly comfortable with creating fantasy storylines so intertwined with actual historical events, especially if these events caused the suffering of many and belong to a culture that is not mine to describe with the potential risk of offending its values and legacy. also, fandom should be fun and if you love angst maybe this is not the prompt for you. on the other hand I thought of how much i love movies like âPorco Rossoâ, set somewhat really fucking close to where I live while describing a fun and lighthearted narrative even if itâs dealing with historical and political events that are still fresh and painful in our collective memory nowadays. Maybe it is possible to write something easy and fun while, at the same time, setting it in a time of great difficulties without hurting anyone. Maybe Iâm not the person for that (after all, this is just a prompt), but if you want to explore a similar plot you are encouraged to tag me bc I would really like to know your take on the matter. and if I happen to offend anyone I will properly apologize and take responsibility.]
[the title is from LâArc-en-Cielâs song âLost Heavenâ, which still makes me cry to this day]
*
When Wei WuXian wakes up after the core transplant surgery, the first thing he realizes is that he should be awake. Wen Qing insisted on the fact that he had to keep himself awake and conscious for the entirety of the procedure, otherwise he would have suffered from extreme backlash and so would have Jiang Cheng. But here he is, waking up from slumber after who know how many days. In front of a figure in white he doesnât recognize. Everything is blurry in his periphery, as if heâs inhabiting two bodies at the same time. His every move heavy and his speech sluggish.
The person in white turns the moment Wei WuXian realizes heâs standing in the middle of nowhere, in the space between realities.
âWhere am I?â, he asks, trying to make out the features of the person in front of him, their long white hair, the silver lining of their robes.
âYouâre here to pay a price.â, the other answers, their voice a mere whisper. Barely louder than the crisp little noises the pins and jewelry adorning their hair and neck are making as the person approaches him slowly.
âA price for what?â
âBefore losing consciousness, you wished for your brother to be saved no matter what.â
âIs⌠is Jiang Cheng safe?â
âHeâs dying because you fell asleep.â, the other announces, sending shivers down Wei WuXianâs spine, dread sitting in the middle of his chest, âYou cannot wake up, the damage is done. But if you enter this door you will be able to save him. Your body in this world will die, the core will not share two owners at once and your brother will be the only one able to use it from now on.â
Wei WuXian doesnât have time to feel pain, determination painting him in vibrant colors in that white realm of silence and void. He turns as the person in white gestures him to do so and he finds a door so big it could rival with one of the gates of Koi Tower. Engraved on its surface are myriads of characters reminding him of something ancient and forbidden. Something so dark and dangerous not even cultivators as knowledgeable as Lan QiRen would be able to understand, let alone encourage learning about.
âWhat will i find on the other side?â, he wonders, watching as the gates slowly open in front of him, a warm wind spiraling upwards and messing his hair.
A kiss from the underworld.
Is this the day I die, he doesnât ask.
âAnother world.â, the woman in white and silver answers honestly.
Wei WuXian doesnât have time to recognize her that he is dragged inside by a thousands of spirits with eyes for mouths and teeth for hands.
*
Mere months have passed since he woke up in a body similar to his original one, but completely different from his own at the same time. Heâs still seventeen, but cannot rely on cultivation anymore. The brand scar he received in the cave of the Tortoise of Slaughter is nowhere to be seen. His mother and father welcomed him back in their arms, crying over his bedridden body thanking the heavens for saving their only son from typhoid fever. He knew deep down those were not his true parents, that Cange Sanren had a different name on top of that and that their actual sonâs soul was probably the sacrificial lamb paid on the altar of Wei WuXianâs greed to save his only brother. He knew this since day one, yet he was too tired to say anything at the time. He woke up in a small village in the Hubei Province under the Republic of China, established twelve years prior. A reality almost identical to his own, but stripped of any power of the cultivation world.
However, now things have changed and his parents have died a second time, the fever and starvation taking them in their sleep one at a time. But not before his mother could send a desperate letter to an old acquaintance of hers asking them to take their son âWei Yingâ out of the country and save him from harm. After accepting her proposition, the Chinese diplomat Jiang Fenmiang has invited Wei Ying to live with him and their family in Tokyo, where heâs working in order to strengthen and acquiesce the relations between the two countries after a period of tension and grievances.
As he travels on what he understands to be called a âtrainâ, Wei WuXian takes notes over the many technological advancements this new era has brought to humanity. Such as the ferry he has taken to travel overseas and now the locomotive taking him to Tokyo. The pain of losing his parents for the second time is still fresh, as is the memory of the past few months living alone on the streets chased by rabid dogs. His body is still weak after surviving the fever and his lungs and digestive system are forever compromised, but he wants to meet Jiang Chen and YanLi a second time in this new world. Feeling guilty for leaving them in a world ruled by the Qishan Wen clan, the only thing he can do is to atone in this new life and protect them in this reality. He takes a brief moment to himself as he looks up from his notes and sees a man approaching from the first class carriage of the train.
Initially Wei WuXian doesnât regard the stranger with anything but a polite nod, some of his notes flying away from his journal as he adjusts himself on the platform at the end of his car. He sprints up to try to catch them... before the stranger could grab them for him and give them back.
Itâs then that Wei WuXian recognizes the man, an older version of Lan Zhan from the one he remembers, dressed in modern clothing and shorter hair. Heâs just another double, a copy of the original he used to know. Just like his mother and father, just like the Jiang family heâs going to meet soon. No recognition comes from the other-Lan Zhan, yet Wei WuXian lets himself stare for longer than necessary as he thanks the man.
A single tear rolls down his cheek as an earthquake shakes the train and destroys everything around them in that day of September 1923.
[details down below]
1923:
(WWX is 17)
the train stops and all the passengers survive, but they are scared and donât know how to reach Tokyo safely by foot. Some officers guide them to the nearest road and help them walk for a while before they have to leave for the capital in an attempt to contain the flames of the many fires caused by the earthquake.
Lan Zhanâs double has the same name and features, but is now twenty-five and was supposed to arrive in Tokyo to meet with his brother, Lan Huanâs double. Heâs a little more cheerful than what WWX remembers and he also decides to stick with the younger man all the way to Tokyo. After glancing at WWXâs notes earlier, in fact, double!LanZhan recognizes him as someone from his same country and reasons they should feel safer traveling together for a little while more.
given that trying to explain his situation to double!LanZhan would be useless, WWX simply agrees and shoves down any temptation to tell him all about Gusu and the cave and how much he wishes he could go back to his original world. They walk all the way to Tokyo talking quietly: they are surrounded by strangers, WWX doesnât know much Japanese to begin with and he doesnât want to be recognized as a foreigner.
uncle Jiang, along with some clothes to travel more comfortably, has sent him enough money to travel and direction to reach his home. The only thing WWX hopes is that nobody was injured in the earthquake and that no more waves can reach them before he can join them. What an unfortunate time to arrive. Aunt Yu would probably hate him in this reality too just because of that.
but as he trails behind double!LanZhan and enters Tokyo, WWX feels as if hell has found its way into the world, flames everywhere and nowhere to go. In the midst of chaos, however, double!LanZhan tries to keep him from fainting or shaking, talking about all the things he and his brother wish to work on as architects working for the government. Yet, WWX senses how worried he is for his twin brother and pities him as he tries to calm down, marveling at how much this version of Lan Zhan can talk. They walk towards the Jiang household as double!LanZhan chats about the university heâs supposed to work for the following month, wondering if itâs still intact after the catastrophe.
they reach the elegant house without any more troubles, relief spreading through their hearts as they notice it has endured little to no damage. Uncle Jiang scurries over them and immediately recognizes WWX bc of how much he resembles his mother and the man dotes on him from then on. He thanks double!LanZhan profusely, ignoring the resentful glances coming from his wife and the curious ones from his daughter. A kid roughly the same age as WWX approaches and takes the otherâs only suitcase: a scowl on his face and hurry in his steps, telling WWX to keep up because âthe world is crashing down if he hadnât noticedâ.
WWX doesnât have time to properly thank double!LanZhan that he is urged inside by his new family.
1927:
(WWX is 21)
given the connections the Jiang family has in both countries, WWX and his step siblings are able to enjoy benefits others may only dream of, but the government is wary of foreigners and they need to act as good guests. This angers and stresses Jiang Cheng, his temper even worse than what WWX remembers, and he is even more rebellious than his new stepbrother. Itâs WWX who needs to tone down the otherâs snark at times, reminding him they cannot do as they please and that, even if others are jealous of their grades in university and overall position, they are still living in difficult times.
WWX knows this Jiang Cheng is a double ant that everything feels like a dream and nothing matters anymore, but if he pretends hard energy maybe he can stop feeling guilty for leaving his dear ones behind. But acknowledging this Jiang Cheng as the real one feels wrong and sometimes WWX distances himself from him, keeping his secrets for himself.
however, double!JiangCheng has seen his brother scream in his dreams, even waking him up in the middle of the night just to shake him from his horrible nightmares. Sometimes Wei Ying watches him in his sleep, when he hasnât yet realized double!JiangCheng is awake, as checks for his breath. Other times he pressed a hand to his abdomen, as if checking for scars or injuries. He doesnât know what it means, but he is willing to wait for the other to come around and theyâll him himself.
their sister YanLi has figured a way to be useful in a country wary of foreigners by studying to become a doctor and save lives. Their father is currently struggling at work because of the increasing tensions between the two countries and their mother keeps to herself in spite of everything.
WWXâs health deteriorates after he starts working, their supervisor suggesting him and his brother to keep a low profile just not to attract any unwanted attention on their family. Their work as engineers can convince the higher-ups to keep them close in case war were to strike again. But Jiang Cheng feels bad for working for a country constantly threatening his parentâs home country over mining rights and land ownership. He may love working on new aircrafts and test his limits, but heâs against using his energy and drive for appease someone elseâs greed.
WWX, for the first time in his life, feels second to his brother, admiring his ability to distinguish from right and wrong while he himself cannot even tell dreams and reality apart. With a weakened body and a mind filled with memories of a world that doesnât even exists, WWX convinces himself heâs in hell and this life is the punishment for being too greedy himself.
1929:
(WWX is 23, double!LWJ is 30)
tension is too strong for them to live in Tokyo, with Uncle Jiang forced to work for the government and scramble for solutions in order to keep his family safe in a secluded location in the mountains, in a hotel in the middle of nowhere. There, the elites enjoys the last days of peaceful times they will not see again for years to come.
WWX feels drained, dreaming of people he will either never see again or see every single day in the faces of strangers. Jiang Cheng convinces him to talk, even if only to ease his pain, but WWX cannot bring himself to reveal the whole truth. The only thing he feels like to share is that he has visions of another world and that maybe reincarnation is not as far fetched as it seems.
Jiang Cheng doesnât really believe him, but he supports him and together with YanLi they try to make Wei Ying relax during their vacation on the mountains.
there, out of nowhere, WWX meets double!LanZhan and his brother: they meet on top of a hill as the wind rises and some of the two brothersâ musical scores fly away. WWX and his stepbrother catch them and bring them back as YanLi approaches the two musicians.
this time, WWX notice immediately something is wrong. Double!LanZhan is far less cheerful than what he remembers from their first encounter, while his brother seems to have lost his vision, music being his only comfort. The group exchanges pleasantries with the twins on top of the hill, until rain forces them all to seek refuge under some trees. WWX watches double!LanZhan closely and realizes these years apart must have been tough on him. He asks if double!LanHuan has lost his sight after the earthquake and the only thing double!LanZhan is able to do is nod, his eyes filled with tears.
Would it be so bad to befriend this other-LanZhan? Is it right for WWX to start a new life in hell with someone so compassionate and kind? Maybe that would be okay in the end, maybe they can be good friends and survive this world that is wary of them simply because of the greed of human kind. Then why does it feel wrong to let himself be loved by these people? Why does it feel like heâs betraying the ones he has left behind?
during their vacation, the two families get closer and they enjoy each otherâs company. They talk in Japanese to not be stared by the other patrons and WWX wonders what happened in his world. If the Wens have crumbled down. If their name is synonymous with hatred and greed. If this is how any refugee would feel, isolated from the rest of the country while desperately trying to hold onto any familiar face and memory at hand.
Jiang Cheng doesnât like to talk in another language and fear others might look down on him and seldom attracts attention by causing mayhem. But YanLi and even double!LanHuan help him come down from his stubborn antics and take him to long walks to calm down. This way, WWX and double!LanZhan are frequently left alone, because Wei Ying cannot walk for too long without feeling exhausted and so the other keeps him company.
since double!LanZhan is so under the weather and quiet, WWX takes it upon himself to entertain him and he spends their days chatting about the things he misses from home, what he would like to do if he were to live somewhere else, they airplanes he would like to make. He doesnât talk about how much me misses flying on a sword, or how the wind fills under his clothes up in the air, or how much he would have loved to hold onto Lan Zhan among the stars at night.
WWX cries in front of double!LanZhan without noticing one day, missing the days at the Cloud Recesses when they were classmates and he used to pester the other boy. And only now, only now he understands what it was, what he wanted to convey with his antics. How much he wanted the other to notice him and pay attention to him. But the one rubbing a comforting hand up and down his spine now is not his Lan Zhan. Even if heâs just as kind and compassionate, just as quiet and brilliant, just as hurt and lonely.
they share a kiss under the trees of a meadow one afternoon and WWX feels like heâs either betraying the real Lan Zhan or this gentle young man whoâs never done anything bad in his entire life. And he doesnât know why double!LanZhan is crying as well as they kiss, but heâs too afraid to ask.
the following day Uncle Jiang calls the rest of his family back home and the Jiang siblings say their goodbyes to the twins hiding alone with their uncle on the mountain. Promising to meet each other again soon, even if WWX knows thatâs most likely nothing but a well intentioned lie given the hardships theyâre bound to face.
1930:
Lan Zhan:
(WWX is 24, double!LWJ is 31)
after meeting with the Jiang family, the twins try to retrieve their life as usual the moment they return in Tokyo for the winter. Their uncle notices double!LanZhanâs distress over departing from the young men he had met there, but his inquiry is fruitless since his nephew refuses to speak. The old man has noticed some changes in the younger twin over the course of a couple of years or so: his frequent migraines and tiredness, his laborious efforts to speak as if feverish and confused, his nights interrupted by nightmares more often than not.
even his brother has noticed the difference despite losing his vision in the fire at the imperial university seven years prior. His cheerful spirit is gone, his steps alternate different rhythms at times, and even his accent often doesnât sound familiar to him. In his younger brotherâs words âitâs almost as if two of me are residing in a single bodyâ. But Lan Huan doesnât know what to make of it, wishing he could look his brother in the eyes and see the truth for himself.
double!LanZhan, on the other hand, feels split in half ever since he has kissed Wei Ying. He remembers that day because his body has moved on its own, half of his mind lost in Wei Yingâs grey eyes while the other half (his own half) was trying to understand why the sudden urge to hold the boy tighter in his arms. He felt like someone had possessed him for those brief, stolen moments in time before leaving his body altogether the second Wei Ying has run away from him in the meadow.
unable to find an answer, feverish and tired with a migraine splitting his brain in half, double!LanZhan wanders around Tokyo trying to remember where the Jiang residence was. His feet walking him towards Wei Ying and Jiang Chengâs room in the evening one day. Wei Ying is alone, sitting down by a table covered in drawings. Mesmerized, double!LanZhan watches from the window as Wei Ying traces the lines of faces and places, over an over again, as if he doesnât want to forget what his imagination has shown him that night.
seeing what is depicted on the table, double!LanZhanâs migraine worsens and he collapses in the back garden, snow piling up on him. Wei Ying immediately notices and brings him inside, covering him in quilts to keep him warm. But Wei Ying is the warmest of all, his embrace like a balsam over double!LanZhanâs pulsing head as the younger tries to keep him warm by rubbing his arms over and over.
suddenly his head doesnât hurt anymore and he can finally, finally let go. Let the other half take his place for now, just for a little while, as he takes a small nap in Wei Yingâs arms.
when he wakes up, Lan Zhan cries all of his tears.
he was finally able to reach Wei Ying, his Wei Ying, who was trapped in another world. The one Lan Zhan has been looking for ever since the end of the Sunshot Campaign, ever since Jiang Cheng himself told him of his demise. The one Lan Zhan was able to reach only after sacrificing his golden core to the immortal turned goddes BaoShan Sanren in front of a gate born from the efforts of some past demonic cultivator.
for two years he had tried to make his way through the veil between realities, his consciousness exhausted as if he had been swimming for far too long. The other-him, the man who shared his name and face, hosting his soul at the expenses of his own body for over two years. All because of Lan Zhanâs grief and greed, all because a goddess had promised him he could be reunited with the love of his life. But at what cost... at what cost indeed.
since two souls cannot reside in a single body, one of them had to die in order for Lan Zhan to meet his Wei Ying again. The moment WWX sees the other cry, he immediately recognizes him and tries to console him for the loss of his âotherâ. But LWJ cannot seem to feel any relief as he falls asleep once more in his arms.
Jiang Cheng:
Jiang Cheng enters the room and is baffled to find one of the twins in there, but seeing his brother crying over the man he decides to help them instead of calling the servants. Things are turning ugly in town for people like them and he doesnât trust anyone anymore since YanLi got married and started working for the hospital, leaving the brothers alone.
in tears, Wei Ying tells him everything: of his dreams of another world, of the one he was destined to meet, of Lan Zhan finally remembering who he really was. Heâs still fixated on this âpast lifeâ thing, uh? Jiang Cheng doesnât really understand, but he knows the two man has grown fond of each other the previous summer and doesnât really envy their fate.
he watches over them as they fall asleep in each otherâs arms, having promised them to keep the servants from knowing about Lan Zhanâs presence in their house. Thatâs when he comes up with a plan and calls Lan Huan on the phone, briefly telling him that âhis brother Lan Zhan has made a choice and that he cannot stay in Tokyo anymoreâ.
Lan Huan asks Jiang Cheng if his brother is there, to which the other only says âyesâ. Is he with Wei Ying? Yes. Are they in love? Yes. Do they need to hide? âI can manage that for them.â
They meet the following morning at dawn, outside of Lan XiChenâs house to not attract the attention of the Jiang servants. Jiang Cheng will escort the two lovebirds to a cottage somewhere in the countryside, far away from society. When Lan Huan will succeed in convincing Lan QiRen to follow him there, they will receive them and arrange something.
Jiang Cheng May not believe his brother, but he knows things are getting dangerous in the country, especially for foreigners like them. Let alone someone like Wei Ying and his lover.
Wei WuXian:
While Lan Zhan is still feverish, Jiang Cheng and WWX take the train with the older man to the countryside. WWX feels bad for leaving, but Lan Zhan needs to rest away from the modern world for a while and he himself doesnât feel well at all. Not with his lungs giving up on him any time he has to stiffen a cough and swallow his own blood with every breath. His weakened body may have caught something in the last few months, but he will not give up on Lan Zhan now.
They reach the cottage and Jiang Cheng immediately sends a letter to his sister, apologizing for what heâs about to do. They only have to wait a week for Lan Huan and Lan QiRen to arrive, but in the meantime Lan Zhan has regained enough energy to eat and stand up on his own. WWX asks him what is going on, and LWJ tells him that heâs currently trying to hold onto this body while simultaneously ruling over his original body in Gusu. He doesnât want to fade away, but he fears slipping out of reach and leave WWX behind a second time.
when Lan QiRen sees them, he cannot deny what is in front of him: someone who is merely pretending to be his nephew greets him with a stoic face as he announces his intention to marry a man. Despite the initial shock, when Lan Huan has asked him to take him in the middle of nowhere in the countryside in winter, Lan QiRen has accepted to indulge him knowing Lan Zhan must have had something to do with it. But this in front of him is definitely not his nephew and this realization hurts more then knowing he is in love with a man.
Lan Huan, on the other hand, knows from his voice this is not his brother but cannot explain why. Heâs filled with grief at the thought and not even his uncle can comfort him, the older man himself in pain for a loss he cannot comprehend.
WWX asks them to indulge them just this time, feeling like his life is getting closer and closer to its end, not knowing what else to do. Jiang Cheng comforts the two men as he tries to explain his reasons, that nobody will let them have even an ounce of joy in the world theyâre forced to live in and that, if things will end up getting worse in the end, at least theyâll have this memory to look back to. He feels like a war is approaching, and no one can know what kind of world will greet them at the end of it.
Lan Zhan:
the day of his wedding heâs very nervous, having asked their hosts to simplify the traditional ceremony given the fact that Wei Ying and he are both men and there are no actual guest attending. They bow to the heavens and the earth, to their families, and then to each other. Their clothes are far less expensive or appropriate from the nuptial red they would have worn under different circumstances, yet Lan Zhan has never felt more adorned and rich, basking in Wei Yingâs love.
they spend their first night together whispering sweet nothings in each otherâs ears, tired and happy as they have never been before.
Wei WuXian:
they stay at the cottage for months, receiving news from the outside world every now and then from Jiang Cheng and Lan Huan. He suspects his brother is keeping something to himself, ignoring his questions over the political situation altogether, but he doesnât insist.
LWJ tells him stories of the Sunshot Campaign, of how he tried to save the weak, the women, the children and the innocent of the Wen Clan against the rest of the cultivation world. Of how he found a way to summon BaoShan Sanren through some scrolls he had found in Burial Mounds, where he thought WWXâs soul might have disappeared to. Of how he hadnât even been able to say goodbye to his brother and the people he had saved in Yiling before signing a contract with the immortal.
WWXâs lungs are giving up on him but he tries to keep LWJ from noticing. YanLi comes to meet them one day and makes sure to cry for her brother only when they are finally alone, sensing his intention to keep his husband from knowing the truth. He knows LWJ cannot possibly keep holding onto two bodies at the same time: waking up in Yiling the moment he falls asleep in the cottage; then waking up with Wei Ying every morning the moment he falls asleep in Burial Mounds where he has decided to hide. Without a golden core, for as strong as someone like LWJ can be, he would die if he keeps crossing the veil, the gate between the two worlds.
the day after YanLi has left them alone, WWX spends his last day with his husband, making sure everything is perfect. he also sends letters to his family and thanks them for loving him. he extends his best wishes to the people who worked alongside him, helping him bring to fruition his dream to fly in the sky once more... even if he has never flown in this lifetime.
heâs very happy with his husband and wants to commit every second they spend together to heart. They make love for the last time before they both fall asleep together and dream of home.
he whispers âI wish you good luckâ before falling asleep.
Lan Zhan:
he wakes up the next day and Wei Ying is gone. His body cold in his arms.
mad with grief, unable to believe a life without WWX can or should exist, he cries over his husbandâs body and wishes he could die.
Lan Huan and Lan QiRen happen to visit that day and find him crestfallen and asking to be left alone to die. But they help him bury the body instead and take care of him. Lan QiRen suddenly feels terrible at the thought of leaving this boy all alone, whether heâs actually his nephew or not. Lan Huan convinces his brother to eat and rest, holding him for as long as it takes for him to calm down.
the following day, as the younger twin wakes up, he asks Lan Huan why theyâre in a cottage in the countryside and what happened while he was asleep.
the actual LWJ, by falling asleep, not willing to wake up in a world where WWX doesnât exists anymore, has allowed double!LanZhan to regain complete control over the body in the cottage. The twin wasnât dead, just dormant, waiting for LWJ to let go of his body on his own.
waking up in the Burial Mounds, however, with no golden core and no Wei Ying is worse than anything LWJ has ever experienced. Having to survive WWXâs death not one, but two times is too much to handle... but a small kid has found his place in his arms while LWJ was sleeping. His beloved A-Yuan, one of the few Wen children he was able to save from the Lanling Jinâs clutches after the Sunshot Campaign.
as he takes in the sight of the child he considers his own, peacefully sleeping in his bed, LWJ finds the strength to say âjust another dayâ. And then another and another and another again.
13 years later:
Mo XuanYu sacrifices his body for WWX and the first thing Wei Ying does in his new body is to ask the Lan juniors to bring him to Hanguan Jun.
but Lan Zhan is already there, following the juniors around after managing to reforming a golden core in just a little over ten years all on his own. The first thing he says to Wei Ying is âI still remember every day.â
and they begin to travel together for the rest of their life.
*
Now I need a fucking tissue.
[as you can see very little âconquering another worldâ type of quest because I didnât like to think too hard. This is more like âwhat if before transmigrating WWX and LWJ lived somewhere else and got married?â But then I had to make it sad, uh? Fuck.]
[also, demonic-cultivator!LWJ anyone?]

Word count: 8015
Warnings: slight angst
*Shihai Kuroiro xf! Reader*
The feeling is indescribable at best. Being in love.
How his quirk allows him to hide in the shadows, you'd never know he was there until he wanted you to know he was there. (Name) smiled as she watched him chat with kamikiri and Shishida. He's so mysterious, and so careful with how he speaks. Hands moving languidly as he's motioning his arms as if painting a picture of what's he's talking about. "(Name), earth to (name)." She Shook her head pulling herself from her deep thoughts seeing Kendo and Pony standing by her desk. "Oh. Hey." She said meekly while waving her hand to her peers. "Always in your own little world you ready to head to lunch?." Kendo asked while tilting her head.
Pony shaking in excitement. Taking one last glance at Shihai, she grabbed what she needed for lunch and headed out to the cafeteria with her friends.
****
"So you're telling me Taemin from SHINee is now with super M? No way." Kinoko's mouth hung open in utter surprise as her and Pony exchanged topics of K-Pop idols. (Name) honestly couldn't focus. Shihai's birthday is fast approaching and still hasn't gotten together what to give him. Part of her thought something small and subtle would be suffice, but she also wanted to finally work up the courage to confess. She knows he's into dark concepts, and has a knack for penchant dramatic speaches. She smiled remembering something that'd happened between her a kuroiro at her work.
*he was visiting her at her job to give her a CD of his favorite band that came out with a new album. She had to work late that night and do last minute shopping before heading home. When a child behind them was throwing a fit because her parents wouldn't give her a candy bar. As (Name) was ringing up her stuff Kuroiro had grabbed a candy bar from the stores shelves, rung it up on a separate register and as (Name) turned to him to ask if he was ready to go he looked the child dead in the eyes, "My darkened soul begs for substance, and this candy bar sure looks delicious." And ate the whole thing right in front of her. "Oh my god Kuro-kun you're terrible." (Name) giggled as she placed a hand on his chest playfully. She could feel his heartbeat on her finger tips like an array of thunder coursing through her veins, seeing his surprised look as he glanced at her hand then at her, she quickly moved her hand away blushing. What she didn't see was the small tint of pink dusting his cheeks as well.*
***
Then a realization hit her. She knew what to do for his birthday. "Hey guys something just came up I'll see you later. " grabbing her things (Name) took off without waiting for 'goodbyes" from her friends.
The theme is a black satin box with Silver trimming and a gold quarter size pentagram on the kid. The box was a big enough size to fit all his favorite things inside. A close friend of hers was good at carving things so she got with Kamikiri and Kodai to help her make the box for Shihai. Once the box was set she carefully placed all things he loves most, and we couldn't forget his favorite food black ink pasta. After the assorted goodies were placed in the box she wrote down a note containing dark themed clues to help piece the puzzle together in confessing her feelings for him.
Once the letter and clues were finished she carefully wrapped the box with skull and crossbones and waited until the next day.
"Heyo!." (Name) announced her arrival through the door of her classroom most of the classmates were already there saying hellos back to her. She skimmed the room for familiar silver hair but didn't find the male in question. "Where's Shihai?." She asked tetsutetsu. He looked around quickly before looking back at (Name). "He's not here did you check the lockers?." She Shook her head, her smile wavering but determination to find Shihai fueled her even more. With his present in tow she walked around the halls but couldn't find him. She checked the lockers like Tetsutetsu suggested, still no Shihai.
*"where could he be... "* more of a question to herself than anything. She ran straight into someone dropping the present in the process. "Shit (name) I'm so sorry." Kamikiri said while picking up said item. "Was the box to you're liking?." He asked handing it back to her. "Yes! It's so beautiful thank you so much for the help."
"Y'know. You never told me who or what it was for." (Name) glanced at the green haired man. "Oh.. It's for well." She mumbled while running her fingers through her hair. "It's for shihai. Todays his birthday and I wanted the present to be special." Smiling to herself. He nodded understanding. "Is that who you're looking for? I just saw him by the tree near the dorms. With Kinoko." Her heart thumped in her chest, an uneasy feeling soon settling in her very core. "Oh. Thank you! I'll bring this to him now." Right as she went to dash off Kamikiri called out. "Hurry up whatever the reason he said it' was important for him and kinoko to meet up." But when he looked up the female had already gone.
Upon arriving at her destination she seen Kinoko talking with Shihai by the tree. Her steps falter and slowed, maybe now was a bad time? Looking at the wrapped present in her arms she decided against it. Newfound confidence settling back in. But she couldn't help the nagging feeling in the back of her head that kept screaming. *"turn back while you still can."*
Nevertheless she waited by a tree just a foot or two away for her opportunity to pop in and give him the present. While she was debating on how to go about it she overheard they're conversation.
"Komori-chan. I wanted to tell you... " Shihai's voice. He sounded so nervous, more nervous than she's ever known he could be. Yeah he is bad at talking to girls, but she never noticed him have a problem talking with her let alone they're other female classmates.
"I really can't help but think about you. A-and want to know if you would go on a date with me."
There it was. The nagging gut wrenching feeling she's felt since finding out he was down here. Her heart had shattered, and felt a lump in her throat upon hearing his confession. Looking at the box with much less determination. She slowly backed away from their conversation and left the scene like a dog with it's tail between it's legs.
****
Kamikiri and Kendo were walking back to class when they'd seen a wrapped present and a disheveled (Name) sitting on a bench. "(Name)? Is everything alright?." She asked placing a hand in the girls shoulder. Eyes peered through (hair color) locks, giving a bright smile (Name) jeered. "Oh me? Yes I'm quite alright. Why do you ask?" Kendo frowned. Fake so fake of a reaction she knew something was wrong. Kamikiri shifted uncomfortably on his heels. "(Name). You weren't able to give Shihai his present?." "Oh this? Haha well no he seemed too busy with Kinoko, so I thought I'd hold onto this for awhile." Her voice wavered. Kendo looked to Kamikiri then back to (Name) before two and two put together. "(Name), whats the present. If you don't mind me asking." She sat next to her. Finally she begun letting her walls fall. "Shihai.. He asked Kinoko out on a date. This present here? I was gonna give this to him not only for his birthday. But it contained a letter and clues, I was planning on confessing to him..." She took a breath. "But. It seemed he had someone else in mind instead."
((Lol this was super long. I'd put a 'read more' link but alas I did this all on mobile hopefully this was okay. Thinking about giving this a part 2? Not sure if this one was acceptable or nah thank you anon for this amazing ask I had a lot of fun writing this piece. Also the Part with the kid and candy bar? I seen someone make an incorrect quotes post of Shihai doing this it made me giggle bc he's totally the type to do this so I thought I'd implement that into the scenario hopefully it's okay.))

(Y/n): your name
                            ~~~~~
âYou sure you donât need anything tonight?â Roman asked.
âTrust me, Ro, Iâll be fine,â you said, holding your phone to your ear as you walked towards the backstage door. Even though Ro was still scheduled to be at tonightâs show, he still had yet to show up to the arena. Duffel in hand, you shouldered the door open and were met with the bustling sounds of the production team and the stagehands prepping for that nightâs SmackDown Live taping.Â
You heard him chuckle in your ear. âIf you say so, baby girl. Love you.â
âLove you too, Big Dog.â
Your heart felt light as you ended the call, sighing to yourself and holding the phone to your chest. Youâve been floating on air since Roman and Drew confronted you in that hallway after RAW a few months ago and with the implementation of the new, albeit incredibly stupid, âwild card ruleâ, you were able to spend more time with your Alphas. For the first time since jumping ship to the blue brand thanks to the new rule, you feltâŚ
...happy.
You were actually eager to come into work that day, mentally preparing for your tag match with Bayley against Alexa and Nikki Cross. Sporting one of the merch tees you stole from Ro and a pair of jean shorts, you tried to maneuver your way around everyone and make it to the womenâs locker room in one piece. You tugged on it and bought the collar to your face, inhaling and smiling as the scent of your alpha washed over you.
You really have it bad, donât you? you asked yourself, your thoughts taking over.
Yep, and I donât mind one bit.
You didnât notice the figure in front of you until you crashed into them nose-first, bashing your head against the back of theirs.
âShit,â you said, pocketing your cell as you tried to speak with a mouth full of hair. âSorry, I wasnât paying attention!â
âItâs ok, girl. I shouldnât have been standing around like an idiot,â the voice replied, their body turning to face you.
The now-revealed Smackdown Womenâs Champ ran a hand through her long hair and smiled at you, taking her other hand off of her suitcaseâs handle briefly to give you one of her iconic hugs. When you first transferred from the Monday show, the Beta was the first person to show you any sort of kindness. So, the two of you became fast friends, looking out for each other both in and out of the ring. âSo, howâs my fave tag team partner doing?â
âIâm doing well, actually,â you replied as you started off on you way again, her trailing closely behind you. âSmackDownâs a lot more chill than Raw is, to be honest.â
She let out another short laugh. âYouâre not wrong here, (Y/n), but the wild card rule keeps shaking everything up around here.â
âUgh, tell me about it. If I keep having to see the same people getting pushed when thereâs quality talent just sitting back here, Iâm gonna pull my hair out.â
âI know, right? Iâd love to face some of the other girls here, like Kairi or Ember,â she added, unzipping her dark grey hoodie.
You raised your brow at her suggestions and noted, âI would actually pay to see those matches happen.â
âWell, at least it hasnât been all that bad lately. You still get to see your mates every day thanks to the rule,â she sighed in content and looked at you. âIâm literally so jealous of you. Two mates! How do you guys even function?â
You started to ramble on about your relationship with the two Superstars as the two of you continued to walk down to the locker rooms, but you soon noticed Bayley glancing at you funny.
âWhat?â you asked her, brushing yourself off. âIs there something on me? Is there something on my face?â
âNah, there isnât. I was just hoping that you were gonna get into the more⌠juicy details,â she cheekily wondered, a sly grin plastered on her face.
âB-Bayley! Iâm not gonna gossip about my sex life here! There are three topics you donât talk about at work: politics, religion, and sex!â
âAww, come on, live a little!â the beta whined. âJust this one little thing? For me?â
She already knew the answer the moment she looked back at your face, pouting in defeat. She made a move for her pocket and paused, feeling around in it when her eyes went wide.
âWhatâs wrong, Bayley?â
Groaning, she answered, âMy hair ties. I think I left them with that stagehand I bumped into when I got here about an hour ago. Can you wait for me here and watch my bag while I try to find them? I promise I wonât be gone for long.â
âOf course,â you responded as she handed her small suitcase over to you. She shouted a âthank youâ in your direction as she ran off and turned a corner.
You dropped your duffel on top of her suitcase and pulled your phone back out and leaned up against the wall behind you, scrolling through your old texts as you drowned out the hustle and bustle around you. You opened your group chat with Drew and Ro, giggling at how they both complained about working with Shane and his behavior.
Reading through the messages, you didnât notice the shadow that had just loomed over your body. A hand slapped the wall next to your head, but you didnât want to look up. You didnât want to look up because you already knew who it was.
Speak of the fucking devil.
âHello, (Y/n).â
You could already hear the sickly sweet adoration dripping from his voice, but you still didnât look at him when you responded. âWhat the hell do you want, Shane?â
âWoah there, Omega. Is that any way to speak to your boss? I feel offended,â he said, his voice still filled with endless loads of fakeness. You could smell the cockiness rolling off him in waves, so much so that you had to hold your breath whenever he was around. The hand on the wall was slowly moving closer to your head and you could hear it, and you hoped to whoeverâs above that someone would do something about it.
But no one ever did.
You could feel your hands starting to tremble as he leaned closer to your face. âI was just gonna ask where your two big, bad Alphas were, sweetheart. Thereâs no harm in that.â
The weight of his leer felt like a brick pressing against your forehead and you kept getting whiffs of want her and mine that you sure as hell didnât need today. The Alpha above you moved a piece of hair away from your face and chuckled at your hesitance, already familiar with it.
âY-You should already know where Drew is, you prick. And Roâs here as well. Heâs just not⌠here⌠right now.â
Your wolf was going absolutely batshit at the sight of him, and the thought of him touching you made it even more ravenous.
Hit him! Tear into his smug face! Kick him in the balls! Tell him off! Do something already!
You could feel your teeth start to grow sharper as he chuckled again, his free hand descending to your waist while the other made its way to the back of your head. You could feel his gaze lingering in your cleavage, and you felt more exposed than before.
Why canât he just leave me alone, for fuckâs sake?
âOh, heâs not here right now? What a shame. Truly,â he said teasingly. Shaneâs hands gripped you tighter as he pulled you closer to him, forcing you to look up at him and drop your phone to the floor with a clatter. His eyes were malicious, but they held in them a caring look so fake and plastic that it made you sick.
Your entire body shuddered as you looked into his empty eyes. âYeah, heâs not here now. So, w-what do you want from me, S-Shane?â
It was still shocking how no one passing by saw him do this to you. It still shocked you how no one interfered with him tormenting you like this.
âYou know what I want, (Y/n). Just say yes and Iâll go.â
Resisting the urge to scoff, you uttered, âThe fucking answerâs still no and you know why.â
âAww, come on, live a little!â he whined, mocking Bayleyâs earlier comment and making you cringe. âI could show you a really fun time.â
He managed to pull you even closer to his chest and he leaned down to your ear. âJust picture it: a night out celebrating with me and Drew after beating your pathetic, waste of space mate to a pulp once again. And as the night grows even later, we could get more⌠intimate, if you will.â
Donât say anything, you told your wolf despite the immediate pushback from it. Shaneâs breath was near potent and you actually felt the need to eject a wave of vomit onto his Jordans. Keep quiet and donât make this any worse for me.
âPlus, seeing as those two idiots havenât even claimed you yet, I can show that Scottish dud how itâs really done.â
Gripping your hair, he yanked your head back and bashed your head on the wall, ogling at your unmarked neck while you hissed in pain. With your arms stuck against his body, his head fell and he drew his nose over the skin. âYouâd love being mine, Omega. Iâd treat you right, unlike those absolute brutes you have for mates.â
Donât do anything because if you do, then youâll bite his nose off and weâll be out of a job.
âWhat do you say, (Y/n)? You wanna take this for a test drive?â
His wedding band started to dig into your side through your shirt and you yelped, telling him, âYou shouldnât be doing this, Shane. Youâre married, right? And you have pups?â
He roared with laughter at your comment, and all you wanted to do in that moment was curl into a ball and hide with your mates at your side. He responded with a large grin, saying, âAnd what about it, sweetheart? She doesnât have to know now, does she?â
Moving up to your jaw from your neck, his lips brushed against your cheek as he added, âAnd besides, you like knowing that, donât you?â
Before he could move closer to your own mouth, his own phone rang and you thanked every deity in existence that he released you and moved away to take the call.
âWeâll finish this conversation later, (Y/n). Iâll see you around.â
Holding the phone to his ear, he brushed off his chest with his free hand and casually walked away, you looking bewildered as he did so. You felt nauseous and dirty, feeling your now sharpened nails digging into the palms of your hands as you curled them into fists.
You hated this.
Youâve hated it since he started this little âgameâ of his a month ago, and you sure as hell hate it now. You hated how easily he could corner you and make you feel as vulnerable and weak as a small child. And you couldnât even do anything about it because he was your fucking boss!
Your wolf howled in anger, letting out kill and must tell mates with every other breath. Everything around you continued as normal, but you knew that it was far from it. Your eyes burned with the feeling of unfallen tears and you could feel your breath grow faint when a familiar voice reared in the background.Â
âHey, (Y/n)! Iâm back! Sorry I took so long, the stagehand wasnât in the spot where I had found them originally and I had to go searching for them again but that took ages-â
Bayley stopped her mini rant and took a good look at you, your entire attitude seeming to deflate since she had left originally.
âHey, are you okay?â the Beta asked you. âYou look...sick. Like youâve just seen a ghost or something.â
Blinking the tears away, you forced a laugh out and moved your hands behind your back. âItâs fine. Iâm just⌠just a little nervous about tonight. Itâs my first time going against Alexa and I want my first match with her to go well.â
âWell, Iâm sure youâll be fi- oh my god, (Y/n)!)â
You quickly looked around, eyes wide with shock. âWhat? What happened? What is it?â
âYour hands!â
âMy wha- oh.â
Drops of blood were currently dripping from your fists and onto the floor, making small puddles at your sides. You didnât feel the bite of your nails digging into your skin, but you chuckled nervously and tried to hide them again. She grabbed your wrists in one hand and reached for her bag with the other.
âWe have to get these cleaned and wrapped before out match tonight. Come on!â she told you, hoisting your bag onto her shoulder and dragging you by your wrist to the medical personnel with her free hand.
~~~~~
âHaha, take that, Bliss! Youâre never getting your hands on this!â Bayley exclaimed at the blonde as the woman clutched her sides at the champâs feet, you raising her arm above her head in victory. Moments later, Nikki slid into the ring as soon as you two slipped out of it.
Bayley gave you a hug as she started to make her way up the ramp with her title held high, Bliss and Cross limping back up a few minutes later. You, however, walked in the direction of the announce table where an empty chair and headset were waiting for you. You gave a brief greeting to Graves, Saxton and Philips before situating yourself next to the first man.
The last match of the night was a one-on-one bout between Ro and Shane and as always, Shane cockily walked out to the ring with Drew in tow to the sounds of boos from the crowd and his âbest in the worldâ introduction. Drew grabbed two mics for him and Shane before they both climbed into the ring, looking like they absolutely owned the place. It wouldâve made you smile if it werenât for him being the lackey at the likes of Shane.Â
Shane raised his to his mouth and was about to talk, but he was interrupted by the blaring sound of Romanâs theme. He came out with a smirk on his face and you could almost hear the thud of his boots as he stalked to the ring.
He threw you a wink when he made it to the ropes closest to you and you smiled, hearing the ref signal for the bell and seeing Shane immediately rush at him from behind. He threw his forearm into the back of Romanâs head and crippled him, making you gasp. Drew applauded at ringside and the two of you locked eyes.
You shuddered under his intense gaze and you quickly looked away just in time to see Shane stomping out Roman, your mate groaning as his heel connected with his chest. You glanced away from the match briefly to discuss other matters with your fellow commentators (minus Graves, of course) before turning back and seeing Shane glaring directly at you, the look in his eyes making feel nauseous as you wrap your arms around your torso.
He winked at you like Roman had, taking his time raking those eyes along your figure and Roman was quick to notice. The Samoan bared his teeth and growled as he began to let out his wolf and rose from the ring floor, charging at Shane and spearing his head into the ringpost he was closest to. As the grey-haired Alpha started to regain his senses again, he threw his chest back and howled with the rest of the Universe and speared Shane again. The match was over before you could even blink, and Roman quickly pinned the other Alpha to pick up the win.
Huh, Shaneâs off his game tonight. Good, you thought as you heard the three-count and you stood to clap for your mate. Taking off your headset and thanking the three men at commentary, you made your way into the ring and took Romanâs arm to raise it.
You two quickly moved out of it and began walking up the ramp side by side, his arm thrown around your shoulders and your own wrapped around his waist. Glancing behind you, you saw the dirty look Shane threw you and you smiled internally at that, claiming it as a small victory over him.
He pulled you aside near some supply crates as you made it backstage, bringing you into his chest while you inhaled his familiar scent. It had momentarily calmed your nerves down, being there with him, but they were briskly replaced by a new feeling of dread when he moved your hands from around him and looked down at your bandaged hands.
âHowâd this happen, Omega?â Roman asked, worry making his brows furrow. âDid you hurt yourself?â
He started to rub at where the skin of your palms would be as you answered him. âYeah, I did. I was nervous my match and I didnât notice my nails digging into my hands. Bayley bandaged me up well, so I should be fine.â
You and your own wolf felt bad for lying to him about them, but you didnât need him going after Shane with a death wish in tow and getting fired because of it.
This is better, you assumed, seeing his eyes grow soft. Itâs better for all of us.
âIâm just glad that you were able to pin Shane tonight,â You raised your hands to cup his face and he nuzzled himself into them, making you chuckle. âLord knows he needs to be put in his place.â
Roman laughed as you said the last bit under your breath, squeezing your waist before lifting his hands to move yours from his face. âSpeaking of Shane,â he questioned, looking down at you with concern in his warm brown eyes, âwhat was that wink all about during the match? Is there something youâre not telling me, baby girl?â
âWhat? No,â you scoffed, answering him quickly. âShaneâs just being his usual dickish self in order to get under your skin and make you mad. Nothing more.â
The quickness of your response made the Alpha quirk his brow for a second when he smelled hurt and shame wafting off of you but he brushed it off, agreeing with you. You rose onto your toes and planted a kiss to his cheek, saying, âNow, you wait for Drew here while I go and get our things ready, ok?â
You let go of him and began walking away, hearing him reply with a âyes maâamâ and pivoting on your heel to see him throw up a faux salute in your direction. His eyes lingered on you even as your figure grew smaller until you finally turned a corner.
Your heart wanted to fall out of your chest and flop around on the floor when he asked you about your hands, and even more so when he asked about Shaneâs shitty excuse of a wink. But, you persisted, even though your wolf continued to berate you about the situation.
Lying will not make this better. Makes it worse for you and mates. Youâll see.
~~~~~
Since your tag match with Bayley against Bliss and Cross went over so well on SmackDown, you were told that you had to give a dual promo with the blonde Omega the next week on the red brand.Â
You arrived to the arena dressed in a casual black tank with some skinny jeans, your sweater tied around your waist. Since the skin on your hands was starting to heal and you didnât want to encounter Shane again, you decided to take the longer route to the locker room instead, using as many of the hallways as you could. He was always lingering somewhere on both shows and was always eager to find you, and you werenât taking any chances.
A few minutes had passed since youâd seen anyone and you let out a breath you didnât even know you were holding in. Turning down another empty hall, you felt a presence trailing behind you as you walked, but you paid it no mind. Then, a rough hand grasped your shoulder and spun you around.
âThought you could run away from me, little Omega?â
How in the absolute hell?!
Your eyes went wide when he spun you around and pinned your arms to your sides. Shane moved in closer and you had the incredible urge to just raise your head and scratch his face up with your teeth.
âH-How did you find me?â
His laughter bounced off the concrete walls, making your bones vibrate. âI told you last week that weâd finish our conversation later. And to me, âlaterâ means âright fucking nowâ.â
He laughed again at your lack of words, your mouth slightly agape and hyperventilating. You were smart in that you didnât ball your hands up as to not puncture the skin of your palms again, but you were damn near close to.
You could feel his hands sliding up your bare arms and situate themselves at the base of your neck, his thumbs drawing figures along your collarbone. All you could see was his smug grin, complete with eyes that were filled with absolutely zero remorse for what he was doing.
âWhy do you do this to m-me, Shane? What did I do to you?â
This caught his attention. âYou havenât done anything yet, but you will.â
Huh?
âLike I said numerous times before, youâll need a real Alpha like myself to show you the ropes. Youâll need me to claim you and show you how to be a good-â
He talked to you as if you were an incompetent child, and his hold on you grew tighter with every word. You began to struggle and try to get yourself out and away from him, but to no avail.
This hurts.
â- obedient -â
Pain.
â- little Omega for me, (Y/n).â
Struggling became useless as your breathing became quicker and quicker with each passing second and you shut your eyes tight, feeling them shift along with your teeth. His words were reminiscent of those from your ex-lover, and you couldnât help but see blood red all over at the sound of them.Â
All you could think of was how dirty your ex made you feel, putting you down constantly with his hurtful, disgusting actions and words, and he made you feel the exact same way that he had and you wanted him to. You had to physically hold yourself back from pouncing on him and dragging his face into the ground.
Get him now!
âShane? Shane, where thâ fuck are ya? Weâre on in thirty bloody minutes!â
Oh, thank the gods above.
Shane groaned and released you abruptly, causing you to stagger back. âFucking hell, Drew.â
The large Scottish Alphaâs feet reverberated off the walls around you and he turned the corner closest to you two, looking around. He spotted you both and stomped over, clearly pissed off with Shane.
âWhat thâ hell, man?! Ya say you were gonna meet me here, anâ then you just rush out like a bat outta hell!â
Dressed in a simple white tee and jeans with a leather jacket on top, he curled his hands and growled, letting off more feral scents combined with his usual one. Through his frustration, he saw the glow of your shifting eyes and how much you were trembling, accompanied by the growing of your nails at your sides.
Eyes flickering between the two of you, he looked at the other Alpha and grimaced. âAnd what were ya doinâ all alone here with my mate, Shane? I thought I told ya sheâs taken.â
The other man chuckled nervously as you cupped your neck, feeling the imprints from his fingers already beginning to bloom into small bruises.
âWe werenât doing anything, McIntyre. I just caught up with her and was just politely asking her a question about her new feud with Alexa. Isnât that tight, (Y/n)?â
You nearly barfed at his piss poor attempt at being nice, but you decided to play along. âYeah,â you murmured, willing your eyes to fade to their normal hue and your nails and teeth to shrink down. âWeâre all good here.â
You feigned another laugh and quickly put your sweater on, zipping it up fully to keep your skin hidden. Drew looked as if he didnât buy any of it but soon turned around, grabbing Shane by the collar and dragging him away.
âWoah, hey now, watch the shirt! This thing is worth more than your monthly salary!â
âCut thâ shit,â the Scot grumbled, stomping away with him in tow. âWeâre already running behind schedule and I donât need tâ hear your daddy runninâ his mouth at me again.â
And with that, the duo disappeared behind another wall, their voices fading into nothing while you stumbled back into the wall behind you, clutching your chest and feeling your heart race.
âGreat,â you muttered, briskly walking in the opposite direction of them. âHope the Glam Squad has enough concealer to cover these up.â
Your promo was one of the first segments of the night and you were finished with it relatively quickly, getting a fairly good reaction from the crowd when the other woman had come out to do her bit. You were glad everything went smoothly once you finished and when you finally got backstage, you started to make the journey back to get the remainder of your things and head back to the hotel.
You made it to the womenâs locker room and shut the door, grabbing your sweater and bending down to stuff it into the bag you had Natalya bring for you. You got out your phone to text your mates and ask them when they were going to be finished when the door behind you creaked open, twin footfalls thudding on the floor. Their scent slowly filled the room surrounded you before you saw them and you relaxed your shoulders.
âHey, are you guys finished for the night? I was gonna text you to see when you-â
You pivoted on your heel to face the two large Alphas with a grin on your face, Roman dressed in a long sleeved black tee and shorts and Drew in the outfit you saw him in earlier. They stared back at you intensely, Roman crossing his arms and Drew moving to go lock the door.
You shuddered under their intense glares, asking, âIs everything okay?â
Roman was the first one to speak, uncrossing his arms and walking over to you. He moved your bag and took your hand, sitting you down on the bench behind you as the Scot watched from the door.
âMe and Drew were talking earlier, and we feel like youâre hiding something from us, âmega.â
Oh, help me now.
âMe? Hiding something from you two?â you pondered, scoffing and chuckling anxiously. âEverythingâs totally fine. Trust me.â
âAnd there it is again,â he shot back, âyouâre doing that thing again. Youâve been acting skittish and dodging our questions for almost a month now. Why wonât you tell us whatâs wrong?â
He was confused, and you could clearly see the hurt in his eyes when you looked into them. But you couldnât bring yourself to tell them yet.
Do it.
âI mean, was it something that we said? Something we did?â
âN-No, of course not, Ro! You know youâd never do anything to hurt me! You both wouldnât!â
You sighed and took your hands out of his, placing them on your head as your eyes fell to your lap. It took everything in you not to burst out into a fiery mix or rage and tears. âLook, I already told you guys before. Itâs noth-â
A loud bang brought you back from your stupor and you yelped, jumping out of your skin and directing your attention to the door. Drew stood there with the side of his fist against the door, and there was a crack emulating from the impact.
âEnough of this, (Y/n). Weâre your Alphas, your mates. Youâre supposed tâ tell us when somethingâs up. Whyâre ya hidinâ from us?â he whispered, his voice cracking near the end.
Drew didnât really express his more sentimental emotions outright but when he did, it absolutely crushed you. You could see your mates hurting - feel them hurting - and they were slowly chipping away at your walls. The silence after he spoke was deafening and you knew that if a pin fell then, you would hear it.
Every second felt like a minute and every minute felt like an eternity until you opened your mouth again.
âI donât want you both to think that Iâm a bad Omega for not saying something sooner.â
Your soft voice prompted Drew to move away from the door and kneel down to your height, placing both of his hands on your thigh. âLeannan (sweetheart), nothing ya say right now will make us ever think that. Youâre our mate, and ya should be able to tell us anything plaguinâ ya.â
âWe love you, (Y/n), and we do care,â Roman added, moving his hand to cup your cheek. âYou donât have to tell us everything if itâs too much, but at least give us something.â
Tick.
Tick.
Tick.
Tick.
The fuse was lit.
Boom.
With that permission, you didnât notice how quickly your body shifted into attack mode and you hastily stood, knocking your bag over.
âItâs fucking Shaneâs fucking fault!â you barked, baring your teeth and nails to no one. âHe keeps on stalking me and harassing me and bothering me and saying how much fucking better heâd be as my mate!â
You moved from the bench and began to pace the room, huffing and blocking out all outside noises as you continued to rant. âThat little rich shitbag thinks he can do all of this over and over again with no consequence, and he thinks that he can just grab me and toss me around like Iâm some useless thing! It makes me feel sick and dirty and⌠argh!â
The two Alphas jumped when you kicked a nearby locker, putting a dent in the shape of your foot in it. âI want to claw his eyes and scratch his smug stupid face! I hate it when he says that heâs gonna âshow me the ropesâ and fucking claim me as his own when heâs got a whole wife and pups!â
You paused to catch your breath but you couldnât stop the tears that were burning your eyes from falling. Your back hit the wall and you slid to the floor, cradling your face in your hands.
âI just⌠what did I do to deserve any of this?â
Your mates rushed to your sides as you cried, Drew holding you to his chest as you let the tears flow. You could feel Drew's heart beat faster and faster and you could feel Roman's heavy breathing on your neck.
The Samoan stood up and looked at your wrecked form, growling. You could see his eyes dilated and flash gold for a second before he turned away from you and unlocked the door, almost ripping it from its hinges as he stormed out with murder on his mind.
âShane! Where the fuck are you, you bastard?! Iâm gonna tear you apart!â
Oh fuck, you though, untangling yourself from Drew and getting up as quickly as you could to follow him. You two scrambled outside to find the wild Alpha and spotted him barreling through anyone who dared to get in his way as he continued to shout.
âEveryone get the hell out of my way! Whereâs Shane?! Iâm gonna fucking kill him!â
You ran after him, shoving past poor stagehands and other Superstars to get to your angered mate. Reaching him, you took his wrist and spun him around, seeing his eyes blown out to a full gold. His chest heaved with every harsh breath, and you could see veins popping out of his neck from how hard he was clenching his teeth.
âYou see? This is why I didnât tell you in the first place! I didnât want you to go on a murder-happy fucking rampage and lose your damn job!â
âSheâs got a point,â Drew added, firmly grasping Roâs other wrist. âYou need to think!â
He was having none of it. âHe hurt my mate, our mate, and that waste of space needs to pay! Iâll find him and rip out his eyes myself.â
It scared you how aggressive he was when he meant it, but you stood your ground. âYouâre not the only one who wants to kill that bag of human scum, Roman, but we do have to be smart about this.â
âWe can deal with him next week,â you sighed. âJust⌠just calm down, please.â
No! Now! Get him now!
Drew nodded, agreeing with you and helping you to pull the other man back in the opposite go get the rest of your things even though he continued to try and escape. You smiled to yourself, though, at the thought of the things you were going to do to Vinceâs son in the near future.
                             ~~~~~
For the next week, your two mates didnât leave your side for a second, with Roman escorting you out to the ring for your match on SmackDown the next night and Drew acting as your personal bodyguard when the cameras werenât rolling. They wouldnât let anyone get near you, growling and baring their teeth at anyone who wasnât a personal friend who dared to get in your personal space.
Monday came far too soon and the three of you arrived to the arena, game faces on as you waltzed in like your own little pack. They each had an arm around your waist with a hand in each of your back pockets, leering at everyone while you grinned.
Roman and Drew were already planned to have another in-ring bout prior to Extreme Rules, but they wanted to have you out for the main event as support. You already knew that Shane was going to be there, going ringside to cheer the Scotsman on and berate his opponent.
You all had your roles, you all had your positions. Now, it was just time to put it all into play.
As their match was the one to close out the night, you had to deal with hearing Shaneâs long introduction when him and Drew went through the curtain. You watched them travel to the ring and you saw the Scottish Alphaâs hand twitch, eager to get his large hands on the man next to him.
Shane continued to rant before you and Roman cut him off, trekking down to the ring to meet him. He swiftly ducked under the ropes as Ro approached him but he smiled at you when he saw you, instantly making you sick to your stomach.
Gripping his elbow, you whispered, âYou know what to do, right?â
âOf course I do, baby girl,â he replied, brushing you off. âI got this.â
He smirked at you, climbing up the steps and under the ropes. The bell rang and the match began with the two men locking into each other in the middle of the squared circle, Drew quickly getting Roman into a headlock and bringing him down to one knee.
He managed to shove the larger man off of him and into the ropes to throw his forearm into his clavicle and drop him down with a thud. Roman roared as a âLetâs go, Roman!â chant erupted from the crowds. You applauded him and Shane sneered, creeping closer to the ropes like a rat to freshly tossed food.
The match went on for several minutes, each filled with blows delivered and taken by both Superstars. Drew took a harsh Driveby from Ro on the edge of the ring and you were almost certain that he had been knocked out, had it been for the groan he made when he reached up to rub at his head.
It quickly turned to the Samoan being on the receiving end of most of the blows when Drew landed a nasty Glasgow Kiss to his skull, dropping him like a fly. He dragged the fallen wrestler to the middle of the ring, standing above him menacingly.
âPin him! What are you doing, man? Just pin him already and get it over with!â
Shaneâs loud voice could be heard above all else and you prayed that Roman would get up and walk it off like it was nothing. Instead, Drew chuckled and ducked out of the ring, walking around it to come face to face with the McMahon. As the older Alpha continued to go on and on, your mate threw the fastest right hook youâve ever seen, making Shane plummet to the floor like a stone in water.
You looked around at the shocked faces of the commentators as well as various members of the WWE Universe, but you didnât expect the roaring cheer that one move got.
He kneeled down to his level and proceeded to pumble the man further, driving fist after fist and hit after hit into him. You were full-on belly laughing at that point, noting how comical it was to see the once high and mighty Shane McMahon who had cornered you numerous times be put in a similar, vulnerable position.
It was beautiful.
Hearing the newfound commotion, Roman arose from his spot on the ring floor akin to the Undertaker and the crowd went wild once more. He got up and ran to the ropes behind him, bouncing back from them and diving over the set in front of him, Drew moving so he wouldnât get hit.
Shaneâs head struck the ramp below and began bleeding as his face and body grew battered and bruised. The two men towered above him and rained down blows and kicks galore, and you wished you had a phone with you to record the magic happening. They then hooked an arm under one of his and hoisted him up from the ground, looking at you gleefully.Â
It was your time to shine, your chance to get your licks in.
âGo on, leannan!â Drew shouted, a wide, wicked smile plastered on his face. âShow this ugly bastard whatâs for!â
Roman laughed alongside him. âShow âim your spitfire, Omega! Make him pay for what he did to you!â
Make him pay.
You roared, baring your sharpened teeth and charged at the silver-haired man, landing a solid dropkick to the middle of his chest. He fell with an âoofâ and laid there like a limp ragdoll, but you werenât going to let that deter you from having your own fun.
âIf you ever-â
Punch.
â-ever-â
Another punch.
â-ever-â
One more for good measure.
â-think about touching me or talking useless crap about my mates again, I will fucking. End. You!â
With every word let out, you let out led to another hit to his body, your feet flying everywhere they could reach. After a solid five minutes of you three tossing him around and beating him to a pulp, you landed a fine tuned pointed-toe kick to his crotch. He crumbled to the ground, clutching his body as you and your mates looked on victoriously.
You could barely hear yourself think over the commotion going on around you, but you didnât care. You got your payback. You all did and if he tries some shit like that again, youâll be bound to pay him back again by a ten-fold.
You raced up the ramp to meet your lovers at the head, raising their arms to signal your win against Shaneâs bullshit. You felt a weight being lifted off of your chest and you felt relieved for the first time in over a month.
Karma really is a beautiful thing, isnât it?

âOur House is on Fire,â and Carbon Taxes Are Not Enough to Save Us
In 2008, British Columbia implemented North America's first broad-based carbon tax. Between 2007 and 2016, provincial real GDP grew by 19%, while net emissions were reduced by 3.7%. Although GDP growth over nine years is impressive, the meagre 3.7% reduction in emissions over such an extensive period is, to say the least, dismal. Add another year, the results look even worse: in 2007, BC emitted 64.76 tons of Greenhouse Gas emissions; in 2017, 64.46 tons - a mere .30 ton drop in emissions or 0.46%, less than one-half a percent, over ten years. And these recent figures do not take into account all the carbon emitting forest fires in BC over these years - a situation, one could easily surmise, that would add significantly to the total amount of emissions recorded over this ten year period.
Nonetheless BCâs initiative continues to be frequently looked to as a model strategy for carbon emissions reduction. But, in our current context of a climate emergency, it is not really, I would argue, an effective enough method for reducing emissions as aggressively as we must in order to have a truly habitable world. It is instead a good example of market based economics that has been successfully sold politically, especially by neoliberal economists, and that is why it continues to be pushed in at least 50 jurisdictions around the globe as a relatively comfortable method for dealing with emissions by those in particular who have a stake in the business-as-usual game that serves their economic interests.
It is this sort of strategy, that is, putting a price on carbon, that our current federal government has adopted as its main strategy in its Greenhouse Gas Pollution Act of 2018 and, with variations, some of the major federal parties advocate - specifically a fee-rebate structure - but it, like the BC initiative, is also woefully ineffective. We donât have a recent report, but as of 2017 emissions in Canada (716 million tons of carbon dioxide) have been reduced by a mere 2% since 2005 levels, we are 79 mega-tonnes short of the Paris Agreement targets, and emissions in 2018 have risen 7% since 1997, the year we signed the Kyoto Agreement. Itâs doubtful they dropped significantly in 2019.
The fee/tax is supposed to provide an incentive to change oneâs carbon behaviour. What works against such an incentive, however, is a politically motivated tax credit payable to just about everyone to use as they wish - except the big industrial polluters who have a different market based scheme based on industry sector thresholds that is also inadequate. Such compensation, in effect, undermines any real incentive to change oneâs carbon behaviour. Unless one is a committed environmentalist, why should one change one's carbon behaviour when thereâs little or no pain? And in what way are such fees an incentive, say, to drive less when one has no other choice but to do so, as many do, for example, in rural Canada, where there is no public transportation to speak of, or to opt for a green vehicle or home energy source when one cannot afford the capital outlay even with government subsidies, now only available from the federal government in Ontario? Not to mention that, despite the tax credit, any fee or tax on fossil fuels disproportionately wounds those with lower incomes who cannot afford to absorb increases even with a dividend.
Even if the fee were higher, as some have suggested it should be for the process to work effectively, is anyone who isn't in the 10% going to stop driving a fossil fuel car? Is any medium size business suddenly going to switch its energy sources and green its infrastructure without significant subsidization? We're all deeply locked into fossil fuel capital investments and inscribed in the global infrastructure of fossil fuels - our houses, our cars, our businesses - and because we've naturalized that situation so deeply, we won't abandon them completely until we absolutely have to do so in order to survive.Â
That day may be coming: a report synthesizing all the recent research by the Science Advisory Group of the UN Climate Action Summit to coincide with the UN Summit on climate change reveals that 2014-2019 is on track to be the hottest six year period on record and that emissions reductions should really be three times what the Paris Accord recommends. Issued just two days later, the UN International Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) report co-written by 100 scientists synthesizing 700 recent scientific studies indicating that conditions are even worse than they anticipated in their 2018 report underscores once again the monumental crisis we're facing without aggressive action.
Yet carbon tax strategies remain attractive to governments and political parties, and it would seem many climate conscious environmental organizations also think they are a good strategy. Why? Because they are more politically palatable and would seem to balance some effort against climate change with a business-as-usual economy. But it is, alas, no longer business-as-usual:  there are no jobs on an uninhabitable planet.
There is of course considerable resistance, propagandistic and otherwise, from the vested interests of fossil fuel production corporations, their financial backers, and their friends in media and government to any efforts to wean us off fossil fuels and to shift us exclusively towards sustainable green energy sources. Ask yourself who benefits from political inertia? Who benefits from climate inaction? We have a considerable number of those especially in the Western world who indulge in classic whataboutism too: what about China? What about the recalcitrance of Brazil, Turkey, and Russia? What about all the developing countries still burning coal?Â
And there is also what has now become a desperate resistance from climate change deniers who, when they behave with a degree of civility on social media and elsewhere, masquerade as philosophical skeptics with a veneer of reason and dance around the massive amount of globally coordinated scientific evidence on the existential reality of global warming and climate change. (Check out the hashtag #climatebrawl.) Their goal is essentially to keep the issue in doubt and a contested state. Recent cooperative research from the University of Montreal and the University of California at Santa Barbara, however, reveals that the majority of people in every single federal riding in Canada with the exception of three accept the fact of climate change and suggest that some sort of action should be taken. Indeed, with the exception of the three all say their province has experienced climate change.
No wonder they say that. The planetâs average surface temperature in 2018 was the fourth highest since 1880, when record keeping began. Nine of the ten warmest years in recorded history have occurred since 2005 - soon to be ten of the eleven warmest. This past June, the month ER visits in Ontario uncharacteristically but perhaps not coincidentally spiked, was the hottest June ever recorded, while July was the hottest month in human history, the four-hundred and fifteenth straight month of temperatures higher than the twentieth-century average. We also learned recently that September 2019 was the hottest September in recorded history. But, worse news of all, we have increased C02 emissions globally by 20% since 2015, in mere 3 and 3/4 years. 20%!!
The simple fact is that Canada is the ninth biggest emitter in the world, that Canada has the highest per capita carbon footprint of any country in the G20 (16 tonnes), that we are the tenth biggest emitter in the world if emissions are counted from 1900, that Canadaâs North is warming at three times the global average, and that Canada in general is warming at twice the global rate, among the major effects the devastation in the North about which we learned this spring and summer - melting ice and refreezing ice slabs, eroding permafrost, raging fires, warming oceans - and several sustained dome-like heat waves in the South.Â
And the effects of carbon emissions will be with us forever: the temperature we experience at the Earthâs surface will not decrease if/when we actually manage to stop carbon emissions. It will remain at whatever level it is at the precise moment when we fully stop emissions. That's why net zero* strategies are ineffective: they still allow for the continuous production of CO2 emissions, and seldom do the offsets actually balance that output. Recent research on the significant carbon debt incurred between old forests and new forests of four decades to 100 years are a good example of that failure. In other words, biomass/biofuels (whose carbon debts are misleadingly not budgeted accurately in national carbon ledgers) as well as reforestation are not quite the salvation we might think they are as raging forest fires spewing carbon around the world continue.**
Our carbon dioxide*** emissions are 415 parts per million and accelerating. We burn two-thirds more fossil fuels today than in 1990, and one-half of all fossil fuels burned in human history have been burned since 1990. Another way of saying that: emissions have gone up by 46% in the last 300 years, half that amount in the last 30 years! They will be with us for thousands of years. In other words, the longer we wait to get the process of aggressive decarbonization going, the hotter it will be and the more the economic fallout even if we finally do manage to stop emissions completely.
Much, much more than a carbon tax is required. We'll find out soon enough that only binding government legislated regulations with legal consequences will actually work to reduce emissions and mitigate their effects with the dramatic intensity we need. We will learn that we need to shift the focus to the larger perspective of systemic change - no easy task given that the entire global economy is driven by fossil fuels. Carbon taxes can play a supporting role,**** to be sure, but the sooner all our political parties stop flirting with a price on carbon and market based solutions in general as their main climate change policies, the sooner we can get on with the job that needs to be done right now.
That job is five-fold: 1) Recognize fully at every level of government the scale of the challenge and that we all have a moral responsibility to work against the undeniable harm being inflicted on our world. Global warming even now affects every single aspect of our lives. Its effects are economic, social, and psychological; and it is already emerging as the number one health issue in the world as conditions worsen. 2) Reduce carbon emissions radically now through legally binding regulations. 3) Aggressively mitigate through whatever methods available the effects of carbon emissions already present in the atmosphere. 4) As politically difficult as this might be, shut down through legislation the production of any and all fossil fuel infrastructure (no more pipelines no more new extraction, no more subsidies). And 5) develop adaptation and survival strategies in all our communities big and small. Why this last? Because we long ago reached the point of no return and there is no going back.
-------
*Net zero emissions or emissions neutrality means that the amount of emissions generated is no more than the amount taken out, a theoretical complete offset. But the new emissions generated in this process nevertheless remain in the atmosphere, thus extending the presence of those emissions in the atmosphere for decades to come. This is an inadequate form of mitigation in my judgment simply because weâre still burning fossil fuels and emitting carbon. What we need to get to is a state of carbon emissions negativity whereby our carbon footprint is less than neutral by reabsorbing the carbon emissions already in the atmosphere. That job is undermined with net zero strategies. As long as we continue to burn fossil fuels at our current rate, that will not happen and matters will only get worse.
**See Eddy Isaccs in his recent report from The School of Public Policy (https://tinyurl.com/y3vdfc5m):Â âThis is because of the time lag between the instantaneous CO2 release from combustion of wood and the decades of regrowth requiredâ - 44 to 100 years.
***Why Carbon Dioxide (CO2) is a Problem
Two conditions are always in play with respect to Earthâs atmosphere: the amount of sunlight (solar radiation) that reaches the Earthâs surface through the electromagnetic spectrum and the amount of greenhouse gasses in the air.
Greenhouse gas levels control the amount of heat (infrared radiation) absorbed into the atmosphere as it radiates up from the Earth.
Nitrogen and oxygen make up 99% of the atmosphere, but they really donât have an effect on the Earthâs temperature because they do not absorb heat (infrared radiation). Carbon dioxide does indeed absorb heat, a process that prevents CO2 escaping from the atmosphere into space. Thus the more CO2 in the atmosphere, the hotter the Earthâs surface temperature. Fossil fuel emissions are the biggest source of C02 emissions, and C02 can last in the atmosphere for thousands of years.
****I agree with Eddy Isaccs in his recent report from The School of Public Policy (https://tinyurl.com/y3vdfc5m) that revenue from pricing carbon emissions should focus not on recycling that income for whatever reason, political or otherwise, but on investments in solar and wind infrastructure that can actually contribute directly to the reduction or mitigation of emissions.

Fright or Flight: Chapter 2
Parings: Prinxiety // Logicality // Platonic LAMP
Story Summary: Virgil and Patton investigate the New Prince Castle, when a brutal accident kills Patton. Patton wakes as a ghost and meets friendly ghoul Roman, who has been haunting the castle for 20 years. Virgil is determined to bring Patton back to life and brings Logan, the ghost expert, to help him out. Time is quickly running out, and the four must work together to undo death. If only it was as simple as Logan made it sound.
Unknown to them, a secret entity in the castle does not plan on letting them succeed.
Previous Chapter  Next ChapterÂ
When Patton first met Virgil, his last intention was to become friends with him. Virgil had built up a notorious reputation over the first few months of school, and his grades did nothing to disprove his status. Patton wasnât the type to judge a personâs character based on rumors nor looks. No one was a higher believer in the benefit of doubt than Patton! However, Virgilâs first impression did not help his case.
Virgil transferred into Pattonâs English class the second semester due to a schedule change. When the teacher stated a new team project was to be completed, Patton did not shy away from offering to be Virgilâs partner. He understood how difficult it could be being the new kid in a class full of friends and cliques.
The project was hefty, an collection of novel analyzing, essays, vocabulary, and journal entries. Patton was not looking forward to the Shakespearean project-Shakespeareâs language was alien to him. It occurred to Patton that pairing up with the soon-to-be-dropout may not have been his best idea. Nonetheless, Patton refused to be jaded.
The first day of the project, Virgil refused to touch the work.
âThereâs no way Iâm touching this project.â Virgil sneered. âEspecially about Shakespeare.â
âHuh?â Patton had not fully processed Virgilâs words. âIs it because you donât understand it?â
âSure.â
âNeither can I! I guess Shakespeare really has our brains shaken up! Maybe we can ask the teacher to go over it for us?â
The teen huffed and shook his head. Virgil laid his head on the wooden desk and his eyes slipped closed. He napped for the rest of the period.
His behavior continued for weeks. Patton had tried everything in his power to get Virgil to help him out. Pattonâs seemingly endless supply of compliments and encouraging gestures served no help.
Pattonâs mind had conjured countless excuses for Virgil since Virgil himself refused to give one. At the beginning the excuses had seemed feasible. Lack of sleep? Family issues? However, by week three, Patton was already scraping the bottom of the barrel, trying to justify Virgilâs dismissive attitude with clones and possible mind control. Virgil was no closer to lifting up a pencil, there were ten days left of the project, and Patton still understood little to nothing about Shakespeare. Patton was flying solo and time was ticking.
The final week before the project was due, Patton caught the flu.
Patton would chalk up the flu to the top three sucky sicknesses of his lifetime. His fever was raging, his skin drowning in sweat while the insides of him iced over. Patton couldnât tell when being awake ended and when sleep began. The only alarm in Pattonâs body was the churning in his gut that rushed him to the toilet.
Understandably, the project was the last thing on his mind.
Patton would not remember his Shakespeare mission until the Sunday before it was due, when he was shaking off the final remnants of the flu. The realization hit him like a train, but by the time he went flying off his bed and hurriedly logging on to his computer to check the time, Patton knew it was hopeless. There was no way he could get the project done in a few hours and counting. Not when all his energy was going into fighting of sneezes and headaches.
Patton was dejectedly scrolling through his email filled with newsletters from adoption sites and animal protection agencies when a subject line caught his eye: âEnglish Project.â Linked to the email were word documents and an audio file. Perplexedly, Patton opened the email.
From: [email protected]
Subject: English Project
Patton,
so apparently youâve been sick. class is way more quiet without you their, which is wierd.
i think i did everything you hadnât done. itâs gonna be really mispelled and confusing and shit. sorry. iâm not the best with righting. feel free to fix anything.
get well soon.
-V
p.s. sorry for acting like a jerk. i owe you a explanation monday.
Patton hugged his computer screen and laugh with relief. He had no idea why Virgil was so nervous. His ideas were brilliant. A week later, Patton would see an A in his gradebook for the Shakespeare project.
There was a reason why Patton never lost faith in people.
True to his word, the next week Virgil explained his mistreatment to Patton. Virgil struggled with dyslexia. While he was getting tutoring in overcoming his learning disability, Virgilâs writing made him incredibly insecure. His old teacher always let him work individually, but the new teacher wasnât having it. Before class, the teacher pulled him aside and told Virgil he was no different from any other student and would have to work with a partner. Virgil, determined to spite the teacher and anxious to seem like an âidiotâ in front of Patton, would pretend to sleep the whole period.
âAll your writing took was a quick grammar fix. The ideas were so good! Iâm not just saying that to say that, they actually were! I could never think of something like that.â Patton reassured enthusiastically.
Virgil flushed a bright red. âI didnât do much. Shakespeare is a lot easier to understand with audio.â
Patton listened to the audiobook of Macbeth that night. Virgil clearly wasnât giving himself enough credit.
Virgil and Patton quickly grew close once the project was done. Virgil was still quiet, snappy, moody, and detrimentally insecure, but he began to open up more as the months went on. By senior year, Patton and Virgil was joined at the hip. Two peas in a pod.
Virgil had grown a lot since freshman year.
Being joined at the hip with Virgil meant that Patton got to understand Virgil by the simplest change in body language or expression. It also meant that Patton became aquatinted with anyone close to Virgil.
Patton already had a bad feeling while Virgilâs tone had shifted on the phone the night they were chatting about yearbook quotes. Remy sending Patton a text only confirmed the ball of dread in his stomach.
Rem: pat can we talk ?
Patton: You donât even have to ask! Everything ok?
Rem: itâs about v
Rem: have you guys talked recently ? out of school
Patton: We talked last weekend. Over the phone. Why? Is Virgil fine??
Rem: idk. he came over to my house a couple nights ago at like 5 am. talked about some ghost shit.
Patton: He woke you up to talk about ghosts??(language!)
Rem: looking for affirmation that he wasnât some obsessed ghost freak. i told him nah
Rem: but tbh he kinda is obsessed
Patton: He is passionate about his ghosts! But thatâs not a bad thing.
Rem: v strongly disagrees. the whole thing about the yearbook and ghost quotes really messed with his head
Patton: I didnât mean anything bad by it! It was just an idea! I promise! Iâll apologize to him!!!
Rem: wait no thats not what im saying. no one blames u
Rem: is he doing any ghost stuff anytime soon
Patton: Yep. Heâs going to visit a castle!
Patton: Is that bad?
Rem: donât you remember last time v became paranoid abt something? he pulled some real stupid stuff just to prove ppl wrong
Patton: Yeah. I know.
Patton: Gosh now Iâm worried :(
Rem: i just dont want him doing anything heâll regret on the trip. can u justâŚidk watch out for him pls ? ik v can take care of himself. but sometimes he gets into this headspace thatâs self-destructive
Rem: tbh i dont like his ghost stuff as it is. i dont need him doing something dumb either
Patton: I understand Rem. Thatâs really sweet of you <3 <3
Patton: Iâll look out for him! I promise!!!! :-) :-)
Rem: ty. dont tell v abt this convo tho
Despite feeling uneasy about it, Patton understood Remyâs request to keep silent. Telling Virgil about their conversation would only push Virgil away and make him defensive. Itâd be impossible to look out for him.
Virgil had already given Patton a way in. Patton had to talk to Logan for Virgil and get any supplies he might need. Patton loved visiting Logan in and of itself. Maybe Logan could help him out.
Loganâs business was located near small shops clustered along the beach. It was a hotspot for tourists, where knickknacks and souvenirs were sold and expensive attractions were advertised. Patton walked along here with Virgil sometimes, stopping at the arcade or mirror maze. Patton had met some of the most interesting people in the small touristy town.
Among the attractions was a dark blue shingled building with a pointy-roofed top. Painted letters on a wooden board spelt out âAfterlife Exposed.â Patton stepped through the door and a bell gently ringed, signaling his arrival.
At the sound of the bell, a tall, dark-haired man turned around. His navy suit blended in with the darkness of the shop. The manâs lean body was captivated beautifully in the suit. Patton quickly averted his eyes, blushing furiously.
âI have been expecting you-oh. Greetings, Patton. What a surprise.â
âHi Logan!â Patton waved enthusiastically. âWho were you expecting?â
âNo one. Itâs a new rule Father has implemented. I must say it to every customer to âset the mood,â as he calls it.â Logan dragged his hand over his face exasperatedly. âI find it quite ridiculous. But business shall be business.â
Loganâs father technically owned Afterlife Exposed. But he was always hidden in the back, gathering supplies or experimenting. Logan was currently studying entrepreneurship in college in order to take over the family business someday.
âHow may I help you today, Patton?â Logan inquired, stepping around the counter to stand in front of him. He was even taller up close.
Patton filled Logan in about the New Prince Castle family murder and Virgilâs plan to investigate the castle for one of his ghost routines. Logan nodded politely the whole way through.
âI see. What an intriguing case. What exactly does he need from me?â
Patton shrugged cluelessly. âAnything you think might help, I guess.â
âWhatâs his budget?â
âA coffee and cake pop from Starbucks, if he uses his gift card.â
Logan rolled his eyes. âAnd he sent you to purchase something from here? Why, he couldnât even afford a keychain.â
âCome on, Logan! Heâs one of your most loyal customers and between us, heâs going through a rough patch. Canât you help him out? Please?â
Logan massaged his temples and sighed. âPatton, itâs just not something the business can afford to do right now. My Father and I have been dealing with a sort of rough patch as well. You and Virgil have my sincerest apologies-truly, you do.â
Patton nodded dejectedly, âI understand.â Spotting Loganâs hesitant expression and tense form, he rested a hand on Loganâs shoulder and grinned. âReally, I do. I donât blame you.â
Logan gave a small, tight-lipped smile in return. Gently shaking Pattonâs hand off his shoulder, he clasped his hands together tightly. âWell, is there anything else I can do for you?â
âIâm not too sure.â Patton pursed his lips in thought. âWell, actually. I was wondering if you could tell me the dos and donâts of ghost hunting. The yays and nays. The cats and dogs-actually no scratch that, both of those would be a yay.â
âWith all due respect, Patton, I think Virgil has got that covered.â Logan reassured. âHe must have asked me a dozen times prior to his first investigation.â
âOh yeah, I know. Itâs for me.â Patton corrected.
Logan raised an eyebrow in perplexion. Patton had never shown an interest in ghost hunting when Virgil wasnât to be found.
Patton thought quickly. âI just want to understand more. For when I talk to Virgil. Sometimes I really donât get half the explanations coming from the kiddoâs mouth.â It wasnât a lie. âJustâŚhow do you deal with ghosts?
âI see.â Logan clicked his tongue. âIâm sure Virgil could explain it to you more in depth. But, if youâre ever in doubt, chalk it up to one thing: respect. Is what youâre doing respecting the afterlife and their home? Are you portraying common courtesy? Treat them with the same respect as the living, if not more. There are exceptions, as with anything, but for the most part, that should keep you out of trouble with spirits.â
âRespect.â Patton repeated.
âYou have strong morals, Patton. If youâre concerned about involvement with the afterlife due to your closeness with Virgil, I would not worry. Lack of respect is the last of your weaknesses.â
Logan pulled out his phone from the back of his pocket. âI apologize, I must return to my work. However, if you or Virgil have any more questions, feel free to give me a call.â
Patton gushed and thanked Logan, jotting down his number. Logan flushed a gentle red and held out his hand for a handshake.
âPleasure doing business with you, Patton.â
Patton swatted Loganâs hand away and brought him in for a hug. âThank you, Logan.â
Logan awkwardly pat Patton on the back before ungracefully untangling himself from the embrace. âI was only doing my job. Now, I understand itâs none of my business, but I recommend getting some rest. You look exhausted.â
âHigh school has permanently carved bags under my eyes.â Patton shook his head defeatedly.
Logan gave an amused smirk. âYou sounded like Virgil.â
Patton beamed. âLike father, like son!â
Just as Patton was about to turn around to leave the store, something in the corner of the room glistened, catching his eye. âHey Logan? Just one more thing?â
Logan hummed at him, encouraging Patton to continue.
He pointed to the object at the corner of the room. âHow much can I get that for?â
 âWalkie-talkies. I sent you to Logan Berry, one of the smartest, most knowledgeable people about the afterlife in this town, and you come back with a Ghost Buster walkie-talkie.â Virgil grunted, dangling the toy by its antennae.
âYou can have the Casper the Ghost one instead.â
âWhat? No! Ghost Busters is better, anyway.â Virgil groaned. âThatâs not the point. How about advice? Did Logan say anything?â
âJust to respect the ghosts. Have common courtesy. Which you better be doing anyway, even without Logan telling you to do so.â
Virgil threw his hands up in exasperation and fell down into his sofa as the cushions engulfed the skinny man. âObviously I respect them! The last thing I need is coming home possessed and cursed! He knows I know that. Thatâs really all he said?â
âBesides giving us his number.â Patton confirmed. âWhich I already gave you.â
Virgil grumbled. âWhatever. One day Iâll get enough money to- wait. The walkie-talkies. Thereâs no way you could have bought them with my money, I would not have had enough. Please donât tell meâŚâ
Virgil got a glance of Pattonâs sheepish look and groaned. âPatton, we have a rule! No buying each other anything!â He buried his head in his hands. âI canât pay you back. You know that.â
âHeyâŚâ Patton took a seat next to Virgil and laid a comforting hand on his knee. âItâs okay. They werenât expensive. You donât have to pay me back.â
Virgil looked at Patton in between his fingers. His voice was muffled against his palms. âYou know how I feel about that, Pat.â
âVirgil, come on.â Patton pleaded.
Virgil shook his head. âThank you. But, you need to return them.â
Guilty silence settled among the two, but neither made a move to leave. Both were lost in their own worlds when an idea struck Patton.
He nudged Virgil. âI know a way for you to pay me back without money.â At Virgilâs unimpressed look, he protested, âSeriously! It would mean a lot more to me than whatever these walkie-talkies cost.â
âYea?â Virgil lifted his head from his hands. âWhat is it?â
Patton stared at Virgilâs stormy eyes as his heart pounded. In all honesty, this was the last thing Patton wanted to do. He was terrified. But, he thought back to the conversation he had with Remy, and the last time Virgil did something senseless unsupervised due to paranoia. âI want to go ghost hunting with you. At the New Prince Castle.â
Virgilâs jaw dropped. His eyes darted around Pattonâs face before he shook his head and gave a weak chuckle. âSure, Pat. Whatever you say.â
âNo, Iâm serious!â Patton insisted. âIâll respect the ghosts and do whatever you tell me to do!â
Virgil was dismissing Patton before he could finish his sentence. âNo, no, no. You hate ghost stories, Pat! Especially ones that are spooky and gruesome. Youâd hate ghost-hutning. Itâs dark and thereâs lots of weird noises and tons of spiders. No way. Iâm not adding more guilt to my conscience.â
Virgil made a move to get up from the sofa, but Patton refused to let the conversation drop. He grabbed Virgilâs hand and pulled him back to the seat. Virgil landed with a clumsy thump. Â
âKiddo, I know I hate all those things. Iâm sure Iâll be scared. But, youâll be there too! I love you more than I hate all those things combined.â
âPatton, we can do something else together. Go to the movies. Or bowling. Normal teen stuff.â Virgil reasoned.
Patton retorted, âBut ghost hunting is important to you.â
âItâs not that important. Itâs a simple hobby. I donât care that much about it.â Virgil cut off.
âI know, I know!â Patton quickly backtracked. âWhat I meant was that ghost-hunting has been a cool way for us to bond. It intrigues you-a perfectly normal amount-and I like seeing you happy! Just like you go walking with me along the shops by the beach even though itâs super crowded and you hate it.â
âPatton, whatâs your point?â Virgil grilled.
âMy point is I want to try this thing that you enjoy with you. Just like you try things for me. Itâs senior year, Virgil. No one hates thinking about it more than me, but we donât know what things are going to be like after high school. I want to find a husband, start a family. Maybe study veterinary science. You could have a publisher for your writing, become a famous author, and move. I want to do this with you. I want to get over my fear.â
Patton stared at Virgil hopefully and held out his hand. âWhat do you say? One more big adventure for the dynamic duo?â
Virgil stared at Patton, looked down and roughly shook his head, froze, then stared at Patton once more. Virgilâs foot rapidly tapped against the floor, creating a dizzy, distracting melody. Finally, Virgil pulled his hair and glared at Patton. âYouâll be careful?â
Patton nodded eagerly.
âAnd youâll stick with me no matter what? At all times? I want you in my sight.â
Virgil dramatically groaned, closing his eyes and throwing his head back. âI guess you can come.â
Patton shot up from his seat, whooping with joy and hopping around the sofa. âThank you, Virgil! Thank you! Weâre going to have such a great time!â
Virgil peeked one eye open and gave a soft grin. âYeah, I guess we are. Youâre sure you wanna do this?â
âNever been more sure of anything in my life besides my love for you and cats! I pinkie swear it.â
Patton and Virgil intertwined pinkies before Patton winked and let go, embracing Virgil.
âLet your moms know youâre going to be gone for the weekend.â Virgil smirked. âWe have a haunted castle to explore.â

Throwback to when I ranted to my friend about Lena and Raiden ei parallels, stupid cross fandoms rants are my thing (I havenât even dropped the banger that is the idsmile supercorp rant) anyways yeah this is really banking on Lenaâs s5 arc but so are like 80% of my thoughts on her
Firstly starting off with the typology parallels before moving on into the narrative, broader parallels.
So theyâre both Intjs, with an 1 fix in their tritype (and also melancholic dominant and RLOXI) which plays a lot into how they behave and the thought processes behind their actions
But thatâs meaningless bs to most people so narratively they both have done extremely similar things
1. ei following the death of her sister makoto decided to implement her idea of eternity, basically an unmoving stasis and locked herself in the plane of euthymia (completely withdrawing from the world to meditate for like 500 years lol), and began to lock down inazuma and enact the vision hunt decree to maintain her own idea of eternity (really she just became a tyrannical ruler), and ofc Iâm going to be referencing Lenaâs s5 arc with non nocere (obligatory s5 spoilers), following the reveal that is Kara is supergirl (brought upon the death of lex) , it could be viewed as a metaphorical death of Kara Danvers bc following that big fallout in s5e07, Lena never again refers to her as Kara, only supergirl
But the main point is her idea of non nocere to fix and reprogram humanity using q waves (ironically she also institutes a blank slate with the sole goal to enact their goal (basically Raiden shogun, hope parallels too ig)), while non nocere is presented more heavily under the guise of âfor the greater goodâ, itâs still a deluded goal which Lena does terrible things to achieve (stealing myriad, kidnapping, a lot of deception, etc).
Tldr: ni-se, te-fi axis, deluded goal that wouldâve have never worked out in the end but they both do terrible things to try and achieve it before realizing that it would never work
2. I can probably think of more but itâs been months since I did eiâs 2nd story quest đ, just generally kinda similar based on virtues of typology
Oh and a big part of their growth is them moving forward from a huge loss in their life, Lena with her biological mother and her entire arc in s6 is basically to become her own person free from both the luthor name and her mom
Ei is with makoto and basically to move past her idea of a stasis eternity and with that a new future for inazuma is in bloom
Also theyâre both in love with a certain lighter haired best friend

i was reminded of the platform that is dailymotion recently and felt a wave of nostalgia for the days when i âwasnât allowed to use youtubeâ so i found videos to watch there instead. anyway i went on the site and made a new account and here are some slightly surreal things i found.
so first things first i did not immediately figure out how to change my uploader name. i found later through their support that there is a distinction between "user" and "partner": both can upload videos, but only approved partners can create a branded channel.
(becoming a partner seems to be just a form for becoming an approved user)
secondly i was checking out the upload function, which was tucked into the account settings, but this was a block on the initial "choose a file" screen
which is incredibly interesting to me bc it indicates 1. there is expectancy for users to upload several videos at a time, and 2. this is a common enough pattern that there are "peak times" which slow down the servers. at first glance that feels wild to me however i would guess a good number of users here mainly upload to youtube but keep a backlog on dailymotion to catch more views. but also idk how true or prominent that is so in reality i'm just confused.
the next confusing thing i found, when testing an upload, is that i could only choose from private (which apparently is more similar to youtube's unlisted) or "password protected", in which I would assign a password to give to people who want to watch? idk this feels more private than their private but the moral of the story is there was no public option. i now suspect that has to do with partnership, and here is a different chart i found
(2 Go is supposed to be Gb lol) it seems like all the support subject address "uploads" as videos that partner accounts are able to upload publicly, and i can't really find anything regarding on why the account i set up 20 minutes ago could upload a video privately but not publicly so that's my best guess. also the little disclaimer under that chart implies that you are technically capable of uploading past your "limits" assigned there, but that whatever api will catch it later on and you'll get a warning or something. it might just be poorly worded but it's kinda hilarious to think they didn't actually implement an automatic check for this thing they're trying to enforce
anyway this was v interesting to me in part because of how Differently they handle these things compared to youtube's norm, and also bc i haven't dealt with dailymotion in a verrryyyy long time, and at that time it was significantly more comparable to youtube in terms of popularity & usage.
i just found that dailymotion is actually still the second most used video hosting platform in the world, and is probably only seen as "small" due to the first place (youtube) harboring nearly 50 times more monthly traffic than dailymotion. hmmmm
#tech#internet#hmm i find that last point a bit skeptical.. hmmmm#as in i think it is very ridiculous for one company of the same market to have thaaat much more exponential growth#like i believe it for sure especially with the way google's managed to amp up everything they own (and more)#i also think it's interesting not knowing the number figures there has made me internally assume over the years that dailymotion was dead#but really youtube just grew so much bigger that dailymotion and others lost any visible sense of 'big'#interesting indeed#tech talk

Our team of Pipe stress analysis consultants forms the functional core of what we do here at our Calgary, AB, Canada office in Little P.Eng. Engineering. Pipes are used extensively in Industrial facilities, such as Chemical processing refineries and Power generation plants. In terms of applications in Industrial processes, pipe plays a vital role in Pipe Stress Analysis Services
Facilitating engineering processes Â
Transmission of gas and liquid in Gas transmission piping system and Liquid distribution pipe systems
Unlike a solid bean structure, which is predominantly designed for strong support, a pipe structure, which is tubular and slender in design is constructed predominantly for the purpose of transmitting fluid materials. Because a piping structure by its very nature is not designed for strength, it is important for a proper pipe stress analysis to be conducted to ensure the structural integrity of the piping system as a whole.
Why Choose Us
1. Cost Effective Computer-Aided Engineering Design Capabilities (CAESAR II, CADWorks)
We have the tools needed to execute detailed designs in the most cost-effective manner possible for piping system layouts and isometrics, equipment arrangements and stack-ups. 3D CAD modeling is the basic basis of our piping design process. All our piping system design projects begin with 3-D models. It is from this master 3D CAD model that the project deliverables are extracted. This includes
â Pipe isometric drawings
â Pipe arrangement drawings
â Pipe Plans & Elevations drawings
â Engineering Bill of materials (BOM)

2. Stress Analysis
We provide pipe stress engineering services (CAESAR II) through the Engineering Simulation and Identification of the stress distribution at various Pipe segments and Elbow elements in both thin-walled and thick-walled Piping system.
3. Pipe Failure Analysis
Stress-analysis to simulate the deformation of pipe cross section geometry along specific pipe segments when subjected to various force loading conditions. Our pipe stress analysis consultants are able to accurately simulate complex deflection behavior conditions, such as Pipe Bending, Collapsing, Ovalization, Warping, Non-uniform Radial expansion.
4. Simulation of Piping interactions with External Forces
Base on the implementation location of the piping system, our comprehensive pipe stress analysis capabilities can also allow you to accurately account for the following external force condition for a more accurate analysis
1.Hydrodynamic added mass (from external fluid)
2.added mass (due to internal fluid mass)
3.Wave loading effect
4.Buoyant effects.
5.Pipe to surface contact conditions (like pipe-lay on seabed)
6.Pipe-to-pipe contact conditions (like PIP) can also be.
7.Curved Pipes
8.Various types of physics Loading forces, such as Axial force, Bending moment, Shear force or Hoop stress.
9.Internal and External pressure conditions
Why is Pipe Stress Analysis Important?
Pipe stress analysis necessary for the installation of any piping system. Through Pipe Stress Analysis we are able to help you solve the typical pipe engineering challenges, such as:
To Account for Thermal Expansion
To ensure dimensional deflections are well controlled within the desired specification when subjected applied with external thermal and Force loadings Â
To simulate and check to ensure that the force loadings and Moments exerted on the connected processing machinery or storage vessel due to thermal growth does not exceed stays within the acceptable safety limits. Â
to evaluate and ensure that the resultant stress values in the piping system in both the extreme cold and hot conditions are below the acceptable safety limits. Â
This helps to ensure compliance with regulatory and legislative safety policies and design guidelines
Ensure Structural Integrity of Pipe Structure
Ensuring structural integrity and safety of the piping structure under subjected to various external environmental conditions by ensuring the piping system structure is thoroughly supported throughout.
*This helps to prevent any unintended sagging or physical deflection due to loading forces arising from to its own weight.
Design Optimization to Minimize Cost
Minimize the material cost of constructing the piping system, by optimizing the pipe system to use the minimum pipe wall thickness, while at the same time ensuring that its operation fulfills the fluid Pressure and Temperature requirements.
