A Summer Vacation to Die For
Dr. Ino Reamer has a lot of plans for his summer vacation — relaxing, working out, trying to conquer the crushing ennui of his 30s. Solving a murder was not part of these plans. But when a colleague's grim demise very nearly ends Ino's tenure, the hyena can't help but apply the scientific method to his search for the truth. When a few suspicious characters take note of Ino's investigation, the case takes on a new urgency, and now Ino must crack the case before Finals Week becomes his final week! 😱

Help Us Pick the Theme for Our Next Explicit Anthology!
Ever wondered how Duck Prints Press picks our anthology themes? The answer is…we don’t! Our Patrons do! Any backer on our Patreon, from $3/month on up, gets a say – and the current poll to pick our next theme is running right now!
Our twelfth anthology will be the second erotica collection. Our first, Many Hands: An Anthology of Polyamorous Erotica, crowdfunded over the summer and we will be completing campaign fulfillment within the next week, with the book to become available to the general public in mid-fall.
For this new set of short stories, we first chatted with folks on our private Press Discord, then the Press staff narrowed that down to a few specific ideas, and now we’re at the last step – where everyone who supports us gets a say!
No matter the outcome of the vote, our next anthology will feature…
stories about explicit sex with non-human creatures, monsters, and the like;
fully consensual liaisons;
unconventional genitalia (not required by highly encouraged);
happy endings; and
queerness!
But that’s not narrow enough to make an interesting thematic collection of stories, so that’s where our backers (and, perhaps, you!) come in. What are the choices for specific themes that are being voted on?
cottagecore (but explicit and with monsters!)
courtship and mating rituals (“how to woo your human”)
underwater settings and underwater creatures
your friendly neighborhood cryptid
ye older high fantasy monsterloving (fairytale/folklore/mythology-inspired encouraged!)
Honestly, I’m glad I don’t have to pick, because it’s a damn tough choice – they all sound awesome. But pick we must, and one will become the theme for our next anthology.
Already a backer? Don’t forget to vote! Not yet a backer? Become one today!

I have another book!!!! That's right, two books in one season!
This one is available at Malarkey Books and can be bought basically anywhere, but the picture is linked to the publisher's website.
BACKMASK is written in the style of 60s horror pulp. Inspired by pop music history, BACKMASK is the fake history of a conspiracy theory surrounding the Satanic agenda to control children's minds.
Nicholas Hush, 1960s record producer, has a vision for the future of pop music. After a series of prophetic dreams he wants to combine occult imagery with upcoming trends to create a new, groundbreaking look. His secretary, Valerie Chill, is tasked with finding consultants and funding while he crafts the perfect album. Quickly their project becomes entangled in other, larger machinations, and two teenage pop acts become responsible for international intrigue, brainwashing, and an occult massacre. Taking inspiration from the lives of Joe Meek, Phil Spector, and Timothy Leary, BACKMASK is a speculative look at how hidden messages got into pop music. KCSAMKCAB YUB

Authors and Audiobook Narrators, Check Your Machine Learning Licenses!
I have just been alerted by my narrator to a clause tucked into my Findaway Voices distribution agreement. It was the last bit of attached Schedule D, distribution policies about things like poor recording quality, h8te sp33ch, and [inappropriate behavior with minors], and other categories I never expected to apply to our work, so I hadn't seen it.
Tumblr media
Machine Learning Rights Holder grants Apple a limited, non-exclusive, non-transferable, non-sublicensable right and license to use Digital Audio Products files for machine learning training and models
The current (as of early Feb 2023) distribution agreement includes permission for using our audiobooks to train Apple's AI, without payment to the authors or to the narrators they want to replace.
The publisher can revoke permissions. As an independent author handling most of my own audiobooks, I wrote to revoke these permissions for all my existing self-managed audio and the one in progress.
Send your permissions revocation (I recommend including both title and ISBN) to [email protected]
And please share this with other authors, voice actors, narrators, publishers, etc. Putting it all the way down under content disqualifying for distribution is a little sneaky.
My blog: https://lauravanarendonkbaugh.com/authors-publishers-check-your-machine-learning-licenses/
Check for yourself: You can find your Distribution Agreement at https://my.findawayvoices.com/docs/Findaway_Voices_Digital_Distribution_Agreement_(9.7.2022).pdf (the clause in question is on page 16, in Schedule D)

Hello tumblr.
I wrote some books. If you’re into Fantasy Fiction, you might enjoy reading them. My first book is Rise of the Red Hand; Its available on Amazon and Barnes & Noble. It’s a quick read - a short novel just past novella length. The idea is to give you a quick taste of my writing, a sort of low commitment sample to see if it’s your thing, without diving into a hundred thousand word saga.
Here’s a link if you’re interested.
Thanks!

Lone Player
by Julia Rosemary Turk / 5 Stars
Honestly, one of my favorite reads this year!
Wow. This book. Where do I even begin?
A brutal, strict society. Where the number one concern is population control. A society where if you can't contribute, you're put to death. Homeless people are given three months to turn their lives around, or their lives are ended. People with chronic illnesses are sacrificed for the greater good. And every new year, there is the draw. At birth, each person is given two card tattoos, and after reaching 18, their involvement is mandatory in the draw. A standard deck of cards, 54 options including 2 jokers, two cards are drawn, and every citizen with matching cards is found and exterminated. It's only fair, and the only way a just society can exist.
There is no longer discussions of ethics. When a system works, morality cannot take higher precedence.
Yet we follow two teens amidst their own battles. They are connected by a single person they'd do anything for - Margot. Ren's sister, and Eddie's best friend. Margot lives in hiding, for if anyone were to find out about her chronic lymes disease, she'd be killed. In classes, they keep quiet, they don't stand out, and they try to think of a future where Margot can live, and not have to hide.
Each of them has a different way to achieve this - Ren applies to become a Chaser. One of the police force, an elite citizen who is the law, and carries out all orders seamlessly. For their participation, each Chaser is granted immunity, and can extend that immunity to their family. Immunity that leaves them free from the draw. Margot would hate Ren if she found out he'd become a Chaser for her, but at least she'll live.
Eddie's family expects her to be a Chaser. To sacrifice for them, and keep them safe. But Eddie can't bring herself to do that. She wants to be a healer, to find a cure for Lymes and a way to give Margot her strength back. Through Margot's father, Asa, she has a way into the underground resistance, if they'll just give her a chance.
This is so brilliantly written, asks hard questions right off the bat. Set in such a harsh society, the stakes are even higher as our characters are forced to find out what kind of person they want to be. When one step out of line can cost your life, or that of your family, what choices are you willing to make? Do you have any choice at all? What actions can you live with, and can you survive the person they will shape you to be?
Also, I just want to take a second and talk about the publisher. I found Lost Island Press through an ARC opportunity for Nightshade Academy (by Mel Torrefranca, also highly recommend!) and I have been blown away by everything I've read from them. And plan to read all the other titles in their small - but growing - catalog. They're a new, just starting independent publisher, and I think they'll have many big things to come in the future! Keep an eye on them, I don't think you'll be disappointed. ;)
I am so excited, the second book, Cut Deck just came out, and I can't wait to read it!
