Has anyone else thought about Jem's reports to the Silent Brothers at the end of his days like "Visit 1,132 to London Institute: William Herondale smashed his finger in the door and needed me specifically to kiss it better." And they're like "Brother Zachariah please"

yes its been five years but i am not over emma hallucinating that she severed all parabatai bonds while coming back from thule, just to turn and see jem bleeding as he asks "emma, emma how could you?" i mean WHAT a perfect scene to show how powerful the parabatai bond is. throughout tda the bond becomes an antagonist as julian and emma struggle against it, and its hard to remember that its actually a beautiful way to connect two souls. one of my favorite parts of the shadowhunters books is how cassie shows how powerful and overwhelming platonic love can be, and will and jem are the embodiment of that. the bond isnt just a symbol of their love but the physical manifestation of its endurance, and thats why the seelie queens proposal to break all bonds is so tragic. to take away that kind of connection is sacrilege, even at the cost of romantic love. one is not greater than the other, and thats one of the subtle but beautifully written themes threading through tda.

The Ars Goetia didn't originate from "King Solomon" as it claims.
If it did, it wouldn't be heavily influenced by fucking Greek magic, since Solomon supposedly lived thousands of years before that period.
Medieval monks, who really wrote the Ars Goetia, had a very well documented habit of assigning parentage of magical texts to apocryphal figures like Solomon to make them seem cooler or more powerful. Particularly to christian adjacent figures, since otherwise these books would be considered hersey.
Even the word Goetia itself derives from the Greek GoĂȘteia, meaning sorcery, specifically sorcery utilizing chthonic powers, or the Underworld: Gods, Daemons, and the Dead.
GoĂȘteia comes from the proto Indo-European word goos, meaning to mourn, cry, or to wail; it comes from ancient funeral laments and mourning practices.
Also, Solomon likely never existed, hate to burst your bubble, but there has been zero archeological evidence found to support his, or his "father" king David's existence. Unlike other real kings of roughly the same periods, like King Nebuchadnezzar II.
Tumblr media
Even the fact that the magic circles within the Ars Goetia utilize the same coiled serpents and five-pointed stars that Greek goĂȘteia uses, stemming from EGYPT and Egyptian practice, not some psudeo-biblical figure like Solomon.
But wait, there's more
Even the use of demons isn't Solomonic, nor is it Jewish or christian.
It's also fucking Greek.
The word demon itself derives from the Greek daemon, meaning earthly divinity (rather than heavenly/ouranic) or a messenger of the Gods.
It was taken and absorbed into early christian theology like many other concepts such as Tartarus due to early christianity rising in the same region.
Particularly the use of daemons in magic through evocation, or even invocation (calling them within yourself to become possessed, a hallmark of Daemonism and the Engastraitai) through ritual incantations of voces magicae and nomina barbara.
All of it is fucking Greek, no Solomon to be found.
I'll add a step further: even the use of Jewish aspects of magic within the Ars Goetia stems from Greek goĂȘteia, as Greek goĂȘteia was a syncretism of Greek, Jewish, Egyptian, and Mesopotamian magical and spiritual practices.
Fuck, just take a look at the Greek Magical Papyri sonetime if you don't believe it.

Hell, even take a look at the Coptic Magical Papyri, which was a syncretism of early christianity and what we would call "ancient Egyptian" religion and Magical practices:

See the similarities?
Solomon my ass.

I liked the Infernal Devices series a lot more than the Mortal Instruments, but oh my stars I cannot get over how Cassandra Clare "solved" the love triangle.
You're telling me Tessa married the mortal one and then when he died of old age she went and married the immortal one after he left whatever the fuck you call the Brotherhood.
Perks of being immortal I guess but hey what the fuck

Will: Jem doesn't understand me. He is a darling precious angel and he can never know what lies within the cursed cavities of my wretched heart! I have made sure of it
Jem: Oh you mean Will, my best friend of six years and oathbound companion? Yeah, I knew something was going on that was causing him to push people away as a coping mechanism, only to long for connection all the more but feeling unworthy of even the barest trace of love. I kinda noticed when he was mean to everyone else and a literal angel to me. Did you all think I was going to be surprised? Oh, he told you I was completely indifferent to all of that? Hmmm...

Personally, trying a diary never worked out for me and I gave up past the age of 10. Because of how my tragic childhood and C-PTSD continue to fill my head with painful memories and thoughts, my mom recently convinced me to try again after 17 years and we bought a diary this weekend for me. Now, remember Tessa saying to Emma that a diary works easier if you act like your writing to someone? I gave my diary a name and write to it as if I am writing a letter to a BFF. It works! I literally wrote three pages just now trying to process this emotional rollercoaster of a day. Thank you for the tip Tessa. You were a lifesaver.

Are Shadowhunters Anti Drugs/Alcohol?
So far I have gotten to the The Bane Chronicles: The Fall of the Hotel Dumort (have been reading them in chronological order) and it got me thinking: is the series anti drugs/alcohol?
In The infernal devices series, Jem becomes addicted to a drug, Yin Fen (not by choice). And this addiction leads to him almost tragically dying.
In that same series, Mortmain gets Werewolves addicted to that same drug with similarly disastrous consequences.
In The Last Hours series, Elias is an alcoholic. Mathew also suffers from alcoholism. And the disastrous effects of alcohol are reflected in those characters' relationships with others and their own internal shame/guilt towards their behavior.
In Ghosts of the Shadow Market: Cast Long Shadows, the mistake that Mathew made was a result of a potion that he got from a fairy (which we could think of as a drug.)
In The Bane Chronicles: What Really Happened in Peru, Magnus Bane made a fool of himself from drinking. And he mostly got drunk out of a feeling of sadness not happiness. Like him getting drunk was born out of depression not celebration.
In The Bane Chronicles: The Fall of the Hotel Dumort, Magnus heavily criticizes people who do cocaine, ruminating how boring they are on his fly to New York from London.
