The crew of a massive container ship that crashed into the Francis Scott Key bridge in Baltimore early Tuesday warned of power issues before the collision, which caused the bridge to collapse into the frigid Patapsco River, officials said.
Maryland Gov. Wes Moore said the warning from the ship’s crew likely saved lives.
“We’re thankful that between the mayday and the collapse, that we had officials who were able to begin to stop the flow of traffic so more cars were not on the bridge,” Moore said. He called those officials heroes.
Moore noted that the bridge was up to code at the time of the collapse. He said the collapse was a “shocking and heartbreaking” event for the people of Maryland who have used the bridge for 47 years.

So there's a kid in a hole and everyone knows about it. It's fine, probably. It's not like the kid is being actively tortured or anything. Lots of cities have a kid in a hole, it's pretty normal.
How do they treat the kid where you're from? Oh, you've got a museum for all the past kids? That's cool, I guess. We do an annual gratitude parade around the city, big festival. I hear some places do still torture their kid. We're somewhere in the middle...making progress, haha!
I was a HOLY volunteer, actually, great program. Harboring Omelas' Lost Youth - they send us to the hole with supplies, you know, meal packs to drop down, meds, and we get trained in cognitive behavioral therapy for conversations with the kid to keep em well-adjusted. I even got a scholarship for doing it. Really makes you appreciate all the privileges of city life when you get back! I'd love to visit the hole again, though. Kid probably remembers me!
Anyway, did you see the news about the city far away? My cousin's in the service, he got assigned to the calvary there. He doesn't get much time away from the group to talk with any of us, but on the news they said the city far away is torturing the kid in the hole all the time. Awful, right? Hard to believe all the people there just let it happen, but I'm glad we're doing something about it, showing them a better way, you know. With great power comes great responsibility and all that, haha!

need to make more posts critical of other ideologies to balance it out.
if the marxism-leninists weren’t here, this website would be way worse imo so hardly fair to focus on them just because they’re the background radiation of the sphere i’m in.
kinda tricky bc most of the other ideologies are kinda boring to complain about and are bad in more straightforward ways.
maybe i should just put ml in my bio and tag it all ruthless self-criticism
#i do think beyond a bunch of other upsides they really delineate the spectrum of positions by attack surface and very helpful to know what#could reasonable hold vs what requires whole new psychic and social infrastructure to maintain

i feel like i should start making more of an effort, when i talk about something in a piece of media being Upsetting to me, to distinguish between 'cathartic' upsetting and 'gave me psychic damage' upsetting. sometimes i mean OUGH OW MY FEELINGS THIS FUCKS ME UP IN A MEANINGFUL AND RESONANT WAY, MY LIFE IS ENRICHED FOR BECOMING AWARE OF IT and sometimes i mean that it is genuinely distressing and i want to shake the creators and ask what the fuck they were thinking
#whosebaby talks#blog policy#this goes double when it comes to pieces of media to which i have both reactions lmao#i worry sometimes that not being clear about it makes it come across as if i'm saying 'something containing upsetting subject matter is Bad#when in fact a lot of upsetting subject matter is critical to depict; diversely so and often#and i am fiercely protective of the rep that resonates with me#which a lot of people are extremely quick to label as A Disrespectful Depiction absolutely no matter how it's done bc they want it erased#and use 'well it's only valid if it's done *respectfully*' as the Shirley Exception; with no intention of ever letting one be Allowed#but in spite of that there *are* absolutely fucking horrible and incredibly disrespectful ways for Upsetting Subject Matter to be depicted#and that deserves well-informed discussion and criticism; starting from an understanding of the actual purposes of fiction#and what infrastructure and language and framing and technique is used to achieve those purposes#and sometimes the purposes of a particular use are fucking awful! and executed in ways designed to cause real damage + get away with it!#so when i'm talking about something being Upsetting in the psychic damage sense; i'm referring to that#and the fact that not only is it infuriating and upsetting to witness that process in action#it amplifies the already deeply emotionally loaded subject matter; which may already require selfcare to engage with even when cathartic#and then yanks away the catharsis and just leaves you blasted in the face by uncushioned unvarnished Oh Right This Horrible Thing Exists#Thanks for Shoving My Face Straight into Boiling Acid Asshole#anyway complicated feelings about it but yeah i feel like i should try to be clearer lmao#(this isn't just about depictions of SA; and abuse in the sense most people think of first when they hear the word)#(although it comes up in that context often)#(see: Big Screan at pretty much everything with the talking animals in sd/mi but especially the fucking asylum lmao)

here's a tech tidbit for the day. in large part, the US's current lack of green energy isn't because the tech doesn't exist or that the tech isn't cheap/competitive with fossil fuels - it's because of bureaucratic tangles and permitting delays. Right now it can take new power projects five full years just to get approved to connect to the power grid. (On average, it's taking 3.7 years).
As of the end of 2021, there was over a terawatt of green energy storage waiting to get approval to connect to the grid. That's more than all the energy currently generated in the US. For the most part, these aren't completed projects waiting to connect - they're projects that are ready to build waiting for approval before they break ground, or are partially built and getting their application in so that they're not waiting between construction and transmission. Many requests in the queue will never get built (some because they can't afford to wait in line for five years, or lose land rights, or have their interconnect denied, or require costly restudies after design changes, or for unrelated reasons) but even if the historical rate of 25% of them were to succeed, that's still hundreds of gigawatts of power and enough to more-than-replace all the coal plants in the US.
That's not the only obstacle to construction (see also: transmission capacity, load balancing, environmental studies, permitting, and a host of other factors). To be clear: waving a magic wand and lifting this particular barrier wouldn't mean green energy right away forever. But this problem is a decent representative of the type of obstacle green energy faces. Generation and transmission of energy are - largely - cheap and efficient. Getting systems approved and integrated across a morass of local, state, and federal governments, utility companies, and ISOs? Slow and hard.
#green energy#perpetually:#there is a major roadblock#that roadblock consists of a real 'technical' problem (coordination integration and construction of large infrastructure)#and a real 'social' problem (coordinating among gvts. jurisdictions. public and private companies. states. etc for payment & responsibility)#compounded and multiplied by the current structure around that social task (often major improvements rely on some random gvt worker#in a small county in Arizona which does not have enough money to do this work quickly or well#in order to get power to Texas. e.g. And conversely#sometimes it's the structure of a legal requirement for a gvt to pick the cheapest option instead of the best#or the financing incentives that *discourage* utilities from building lr improving transmission lines#or. yknow. american-flavor capitalism aiming for quarterly investor financial reviews yoked to a bureaucracy that moves at 5-year speeds

after a night and a half of looking through alternatives, seeing the long term timelines for hosting on other sites - I've got a formulated idea on how I want to tackle things.
I'm going to keep posting here as I have been.
(*Some) Posts will be mirrored to: bokumono.bsky.social (bluesky) bokujoumonogatari (Cohost) And this thing. Folks will get access to this once I have a moderately large translations repository to upload.
*Some because the other medias have their own problems. I can't upload video to bsky and it has a 4 pictures per post limit like Twitter, and cohost is a newer social media (that yields its own bottlenecks).
The Thing is a bit unwieldy but it works for uploading pages as 10mb jpgs. Everything here gets posted as HQ pngs, fwiw.
(I also have invite codes for bsky should anyone want them.)
#the internet is so homogenized that there's nothing quite like tumblr anymore and even that's falling to homogenization#really hardcore considered geocities/neocities again#I also took a look at some framework for sites like Fogu and similar to see how it would go but -#-the infrastructure required is beyond my pea brain and also consider: i am poor#this is my best solution in a short term window

honestly feeling stressed that feh wants askr to be a perfect paradise which keeps getting attacked by all these rotten jealous neighbouring nations who are just jealous of askrs cool summoner and perfect lives but then also orphanages are a universal constant?????? askrs wars are nearly exclusively fought by fire emblem characters isekai'd for that sole purpose but there's still enough orphaned kids that the state is practicing institutionalisation??????? and then filling those orphanages with adult fe characters who were raised in them makes them feel like a zoo exhibit like oh it's enrichment for the heroes to go take care of forgotten unloved children just like they were. that's kind of sick. that's twisted
#askr what the fuck is your government doing. alphonse is explaining the plot of fe4 and last i saw her#queen Henrietta seemed to believe the states duty towards its citizens required her to hand deliver individual bowls of soup.#but someone somewhere has to know something about running a country. you have infrastructure... right? right??

i am SO IRRITATED with @support @staff right now
like this detaching a post from its link to each individual reblog in a chain is a NIGHTMARE
-> new hyperfixation, and i'm trying to backread some of the associated blogs that have been around a while, yeah?
and i'm on mobile, which is relevant because hey fuck app users is i guess the motto?
so used to, if you wanted to read a few months/years back on a blog you could: find a tag of theirs, click on a post that was around the time you were interested in, be ported to the blog's dash AS OF THAT TIME IN THE PAST, and just scroll along
but now, because tumblr, for whatever moronic reason, has isolated posts so that
clicking takes you to an individual pane for *only* that post, not where it is on the blog timeline
AND NOW you CANNOT reach a previous reblog from clicking on the username in the reblog (only the og post)
the ONLY way to get back to older posts is to SCROLL MANUALLY FOR LITERAL HOURS
if i want to see posts from 2017, finding an old post and clicking on it does NOTHING to help me - it has been snipped out of its native environment and shown to me, but the other posts available as links at the bottom pane are just whatever tumblr algorithm thinks are 'relevant', not access to the rest of the blog timeline
this is true EVEN ON MY OWN BLOG and
I HATE IT
either make the Archive function work on mobile or GIVE BACK THE FUNCTIONALITY THAT WE HAVE ALWAYS HAD
#tumblr#GODDAMMIT my hand is tired#i KNOW that on desktop you can hotkey around THAT IS WHY I AM COMPLAINING#the are always desktop workarounds for everything it's only mobile users that get treated like trash#give me back a way to click back to 'prev tags' or whatever and GIVE ME BACK A WAY TO 'GO BACK IN TIME' ON A BLOG#that is the entire FUNCTION of a blog or did you blackout everything you know about wordpress somehow?#the point of a blog as opposed to pure 'social media' say twitter is that it fuctions as a RECORD#posts are supposed to remain accessible not vanish never to be accessed after a few days except by direct link#and direct links don't even work anymore!!! bc now you're requiring people to sign in to see posts and comments#plus a native shared link now takes people to the crappy default 'mobile' view of a post not the ACTUAL BLOG POST#that someone made on their ACTUAL BLOG that has their custom theme and header sidelinks bio etc#nowdays if in my notifications someone says something to me referencing my own tags on a post#and i click on that - i CAN NOT navigate back to my own post to see what my tags even were if i don't remember my exact wording#i have to exit notifications go back to my blog and just ... scroll until i reach that old post just to have a reference#like what the fuck tumblr?#i will say it again: STOP FUCKING WITH THE SITE NAVIGATION we NEED that shit this is not tiktok we find posts on OUR OWN#there's a difference between making something accesdible for new people and flat out ruining original infrastructure

Yeeep get y'all's survival skill books, camping/survival gear, and useful plant seeds ready... just in case!
(Sound on.) We’re all doomed.
#don't underestimate useful skills either#cordage making#sewing#basic building and handyman skills#if the infrastructure fully collapses it's gonna be on YOU to keep yourself alive#the best way to stay alive will be supporting the local community and organizing everyone into basically a small town/village#focus on self sufficiency and what that requires#good luck everybody

By the way, you can improve your executive function. You can literally build it like a muscle.
Yes, even if you're neurodivergent. I don't have ADHD, but it is allegedly a thing with ADHD as well. And I am autistic, and after a bunch of nerve damage (severe enough that I was basically housebound for 6 months), I had to completely rebuild my ability to get my brain to Do Things from what felt like nearly scratch.
This is specifically from ADDitude magazine, so written specifically for ADHD (and while focused in large part on kids, also definitely includes adults and adult activities):
Here's a link on this for autism (though as an editor wow did that title need an editor lol):
Resources on this aren't great because they're mainly aimed at neurotypical therapists or parents of neurdivergent children. There's worksheets you can do that help a lot too or thought work you can do to sort of build the neuro-infrastructure for tasks.
But a lot of the stuff is just like. fun. Pulling from both the first article and my own experience:
Play games or video games where you have to make a lot of decisions. Literally go make a ton of picrews or do online dress-up dolls if you like. It helped me.
Art, especially forms of art that require patience, planning ahead, or in contrast improvisation
Listening to longform storytelling without visuals, e.g. just listening regularly to audiobooks or narrative podcasts, etc.
Meditation
Martial arts
Sports in general
Board games like chess or Catan (I actually found a big list of what board games are good for building what executive functioning skills here)
Woodworking
Cooking
If you're bad at time management play games or video games with a bunch of timers
Things can be easier. You might always have a disability around this (I certainly always will), but it can be easier. You do not have to be this stuck forever.
#actually autistic#executive dysfunction#neurodivergent#adhd#not news#hope#at least it's been very hopeful for me

Emergency: Help Evacuate My Family From GAZA WAR
Dear Humanity,
I'm Haya from Gaza , from a family of 8 people: my parents, two sons, and four daughters (two of them suffer from allergies).
I've witnessed the evidence of the tragedy that has struck our lives in Gaza, where my family and I have survived amidst numerous previous wars. But today, we face the most dangerous and fierce battle in the current war. The urgent need intensifies for us, as we have nothing left and are unable to secure our basic needs such as food, water, and safe shelter.
Here is our story - On October 7th, our lives changed forever, my family and I evacuated from northern Gaza to southern Gaza, hoping to return soon, but it wasn't meant to be. Our home was surrounded, burned, and then completely destroyed, Our home, once a fortress of hope, now lay in ruins, a stark reminder of our shattered dreams.
The night before we left from the north to the south was terrifying. Shelling sounds were everywhere, making a loud noise that felt like it went through our souls. Every explosions shook the ground like earthquakes, sending shockwaves of fear through our trembling bodies. filling us with fear. The air smelled of destruction and blood, making it hard to breathe. When dawn came, we saw the devastation around us, realizing our home was now a symbol of loss and despair.
We ran into the streets and with each step we took into the unknown streets, we felt as if we were plunging deeper into the abyss of our shattered existence, leaving behind everything we own in our home: Clothes, important official documents, the car, and literally it's almost everything - the enormity of our loss weighed heavily upon us.
Our home it was where we found hope, safety, and made precious memories. Losing it felt like losing years of our lives, leaving us adrift amidst the wreckage of our shattered existence.
youtube
A brief video depicting the devastation that struck our home and our entire neighborhood in Gaza.
Desperate Plea: Escaping Gaza's Allergy Nightmare
I, Haya, suffer from severe allergy to penicillin-derived medications, and my sister, Amal, also suffers from severe allergies to medications from my family such as Paracetamol and Ibuprofen.
These allergies create a deep sense of fear and anxiety for us, as we live in a constant state of tension and fear of anything that may require a visit to the hospital. We fear being given inappropriate medications due to the unavailability of suitable treatments in Gaza because of war or lack of awareness and not informing the doctor of our allergies, which could lead to serious consequences threatening our lives.
MY Father Income

Our dreams are heading towards oblivion in the labyrinth of an uncertain future
My story, along with my siblings, represents a united team of four individuals, three of whom are skilled programmers and one graphic designer. We work as freelancers in the world of freelancing.
As for my younger sister, she is a student studying at the College of Architecture. She has always carried a big dream in her heart, a dream of being part of changing Gaza, of making it more beautiful and better. She looked forward to the day when she would receive her degree and start building this dream. But the beginning of the war changed everything. The destruction of infrastructure and universities cast shadows of despair over her dreams.

When I think of my brother in Belgium, I can't help but feel deep sadness. He has been suffering from unbearable anxiety and insomnia since the outbreak of the war. Sleep eludes him at night, and his physical and mental health collapses under the weight of these heavy burdens, negatively affecting his performance at work. Problems and challenges pile up in front of him without the slightest opportunity for rest.
We all feel psychological pressure and extreme anxiety. The war hasn't been limited to external attacks but has deeply infiltrated our daily lives. We search among the rubble for a little safety and the basic resources for survival. Every day comes with a new challenge that we must overcome.
As we sway amidst the rubble of shattered dreams, our souls wrestle and our hearts beat strongly challenging the ravages of war.
Our parents earnestly seek a way to rescue us from this hell, feeling the heavy responsibility for every moment we spend under the shadows of fear and destruction. They dream of a safe place where they can build for us a better future, filled with security and hope, for we deserve life in all its meanings of comfort and peace.
Perhaps this fundraising campaign represents a light in the midst of darkness, it is indeed the only hope we cling to firmly.
I appeal to the world as a whole to hear my cry and the mournful cry of my family in Gaza. We need the helping hand that reaches out to wipe our tears and build a bridge to safety.
Your donation is not just a donation; it's an opportunity to rebuild life and brighten a better tomorrow. Be part of our hopeful story, for we need your hand to start anew.
The purpose of the fundraising campaign
The goal of this fundraising campaign is to rescue my family - my parents, my siblings, and me - through the Rafah Crossing to Egypt, which currently requires $5000 per person. This campaign is our only chance to stay alive, and I humbly request your assistance at this critical time. I will provide you with a comprehensive breakdown of the expenses, committing to transparency and clarity.

As a trans woman you can generally expect not to be believed about most things: The legal processes you've navigated, effects you've had from transition care, what you had for breakfast, and so on.
But there's one major exception, which is when you're clearly joking.
If you say something like "I'm going to forcefem Richard Nixon for his crimes", you will be subjected to a person who fully and entirely believes that:
You possess the infrastructure and resources necessary to operate a real life forcefemming dungeon sophisticated enough to forcefem not just any captive, but a US President
You intend to wield the power of this forcefem dungeon over political disagreements, and are taking active steps to do so
Your intended target is Richard Nixon, famously a corpse who has been dead for 30 glorious, Nixonless years, and you are apparently going to be able to put him in a state that would be receptive to forcefemming, which is generally understood to require a subject who is alive
Despite the evidence that you are a necromancer with substantial kidnapping abilities, you are receptive to being informed, in a strongly worded post of concern, that necromantic forcefem is immoral.
And once they've caught you in your dastardly scheme, they will not relent at attempts to clarify

Horseshit take
There's literally 7 big name tech companies in the US trying to make humanoid robots for these kinds of tasks
Physical intelligence
Agility Robotics
Tesla
Mattic robototics
Appronik
Boston Dynamics
Neura
Guess what the issues are
1. Task generalization
2. Sim2real
We're trying 👹👹👹👹👹👹👹👹👹
Theres a new technique for robot learning with diffusion so ig it adds a little bit of adaptability but still
These robots
Cannot generalize. They can only do the tasks theyre trained for. This is horrible. You give them a meat cutting knife instead of a butter knife but a slab of meat looks too different from a slab of butter and the cutting technique is different (example. Its not quite this simple)
That poor bot is cooked
And we're trying WE'RE TRYING
You have no idea how much easier LLMs are to make
#dont talk about ai im mad#think of the poor idiot researchers (me) trying to make this happen#ohhhh capitalism evil propaganda propaganda#cmon. just talk to one of us#im more than happy to#no just kidding im under NDA#im more than happy to refer you to my brother who knows who isnt under NDA#sorry op that i screenshotted youll be my excuse to rant about how nobody gets ai#just for reference tho. cornell hosts something called arxiv where you can find m#you can find papers and paper manuscripts. and its free. completely free to look at#if anyone has ever wanted to make their life hell and read some papers for fun#its tumblrs fault for putting this on my for u#for the record in terms of personal politics. i dont think ai is trying to replace creatives. i think its trying to replace everyone#you havent seen how much of a rush there is to get warehouse automation ai infrastructure in#i think we're seeing people use it to try to replace creatives first because most people are inherently not creative#ive been debating with myself. would people get bored eventually and return to base (real creatives) or will it kinda be like mcdonalds.#i think both? i think both. i have no one to discuss this with#yknow colleges always push that engineers are some sort of moral-less ethics-less demons so they make us take required humanities classes#but in none of those classes do they ever answer the question why humanity tends to gravitate towards slavery#avo if they answered that people will think critically about communism so thay cant happen#weve got like 2 different kinds of pro slavery advocates rn and lemme tell you none of those people are engineers.#i dont think its our ethics abd morals you should be concerned about
