Use a combination of chopped stems and bark and leaves. Put 1 to 2 cups of chopped leaves and stems in a quart jar and fill with boiling water. Let set at least 4 hours or overnight. Strain. Fill an 8 ounce spray bottle half full of the infusion. Add witch hazel almost to the top – leave a 2 ounce space. Add essential oil of your choice. Shake before using.

3 tablespoons of sugar

3 tablespoons of toothpaste

3 tablespoons of water

Method:

Since spring is blooming and summer fast approaching, roaches have returned. I saw one a few nights ago atop an empty cabnet door and a glimpse of another tonight crawling between a drawer.

While i dont mind roaches as a species, theyre not welcome in my home. I'm a clean person, but since I live in an apartment they can be a collective issue. And, as with any bug, they will inevitably find their way inside because theyre so small and can fit through cracks and gaps in walls and doors. So repelling them as much as possible is obligatory.

I usually kill them on sight when i see them, which I've become good at, but every now and then I'll spare them by catch-and-release. I dont enjoy killing the roaches as much as I dont enjoy seeing them inside because, again, I dont hate roaches for what they are, and I respect their important niches in nature. Also, tbh, I dont like the idea of getting roach guts everywhere after I smash them lol. So I looked up a few natural remedies for repelling them, particularly the German cockroach variety that usually intrudes where i live.

As another former camp counselor, fully agreeing with all of this. And deep woods bug spray is definitely your best friend. However! Do NOT spray it:

Near a car--it'll damage the finish (no, I'm not kidding)

Near anything painted, including buildings--it damages paint

On plastic, including fabrics made with polyester and other synthetics; this includes tents, waterproofing, sunglasses, etc.--it ruins/melts plastic

Near fire--it's flammable

Near other people--be at least ten feet away, because nobody wants that in their eyes/face/etc.

Indoors (I thought this was common sense, but camp taught me otherwise)

Keep in mind what direction the wind is blowing and make sure none of this is downwind of you, either. Hold your breath when you're spraying yourself, and don't spray it directly at your face or neck--just put a little in your hand and rub it on. If you've got a friend with you, you can always ask them to spray you down (but still hold your breath, and don't let them spray at your face).

And if you're thinking, "damn, it can damage paint? What am I putting on myself?" the answer is: it's fine if used properly, and the CDC recommends it. There's plenty of studies on this. Just make sure you don't eat it (duh) and wash it off at the end of the day.

Also, those bug repellent bracelets? They do fuck-all against literally everything, including ticks and mosquitoes. Most "organic" bug sprays are also lying to you. (Parents who believed in that shit were the bane of our existence.) Check the EPA for recommended insect repellents. Consumer Reports also has a nice breakdown.

I'm trying to write a post about tick safety and avoiding tick bites, but a lot of the info on websites is like "Avoid going in the woods, in plants, and where there are wild animals" and "Activities like hiking and gardening can put you at risk" and I'm like thanks! This is worthless!

As ticks and tick borne illnesses are expanding their range, I think it's important for people to be educated about these things, and I think it's especially important to give people actual advice on how to protect themselves instead of telling them to just...avoid the natural world

Rough draft version of Tick Advice:

Ticks don't jump down on you from trees, they get on you when you brush against grass, brush, bushes etc.

Ticks get brought to an area when they get done feeding from an animal and fall off them. In the USA, the main tick-bringing animal is deer, but I've seen plenty ticks on feral cats and songbirds.

Ticks get killed when they dry out so drier areas with more sunlight are less favorable to ticks.

The above is useful for figuring out whether an area is likely to have lots of ticks, and how vigilant you have to be in that area.

Wear light-colored, long pants outside. Tuck your pants into your socks, and tuck your shirt into the waist of your pants. Invest in light, breathable fabrics idc

IMMEDIATELY change out of your outside clothes when you come back from a tick-prone area, wash them, and dry them on high heat to kill any ticks that might be stuck on.

Shower and check yourself for ticks after coming inside. Hair, armpits, and nether regions in particular. You can use a handheld mirror or rely on touch; an attached tick will feel like a bump kinda like a scab

While you're outside, you can just periodically check for ticks by running your hands down your legs and checking visually to see if anything is crawling on your clothes. Light colors make them easy to spot, and they don't move fast.

Combing through each others' hair to check for creepy crawly critters is a time-honored primate ritual and is not weird. When hiking, bring a friend who will have your back when you feel something on your neck and need to know if it's sweat or a tick

If you're careful, you can usually catch ticks before they bite you, but if one does bite you, it's not the end of the world. Since tickborne diseases are different regionally i suspect this advice will differ based on where you are, but the important thing is remove the tick with tweezers (DON'T use butter, a lit match, or anything that kills the tick while it's still attached, please) and contact a doctor to see what to watch for. Most illnesses you can catch from ticks are easily treatable if you recognize them when symptoms first appear
