The Global Landscape of Internet Shutdowns in 2024
In 2024, the world witnessed a significant surge in government-ordered internet shutdowns, reaching an alarming total of 296 incidents reported globally. This number marked the highest ever recorded in a single year, according to a detailed report by Access Now, an advocacy group dedicated to promoting digital rights. India at the Forefront India emerged as a notable contributor to these…

I'm going to go off for a minute about the whole tumblr shutting down thing
I see a lot of people talking about how "no one wants to pay for tumblr premium and that's [part of] the reason tumblr is going under" and I'd like to address this specifically.
I remember when Tumblr announced they had badges, a shop, blaze, and premium people were really excited! Including me! We could pay to keep the lights on and maybe this meant we could get porn back! Tumblr generally wouldn't have to be beholden to "advertiser friendly" standards that not only affected nsfw creators but also a lot of just openly queer people on this site whose only crime was existing.
Then, Tumblr didn't keep their end of the bargain. The big visible issue at the time was transfems were being banned from the platform. Did you all forget Matt Mullenweg's harassment campaign against predestrogen? Remember how he FOLLOWED HER TO TWITTER and CONTINUED TO HARRASS HER after she left tumlbr?
Remember all the trans women talking about how they didn't feel safe on tumblr anymore? What about the sex workers who got banned for sharing sfw promos of their content? Or the artists who spoke up when Tumblr stole their work for their merch without asking?
We didn't choose not to give Tumblr money because "hehe tumblr anticapitalist". We chose not to give money to Tumblr and by extension Automatic because even when people were eagerly giving them money Tumblr and Automatic showed complete disregard for the same users they were asking to pay to keep this platform running. We made an informed decision to not give money to a platform that refused to put its users first.
Tl;dr: Tumblr's user base was perfectly happy to pay to keep the lights on until it became obvious Automatic and Tumblr didn't respect it's users enough to keep up their end of the bargain. The founder harassed predestrogen (who was a well known transfem user) off of the site, sexworkers being sfw were banned, and artist's work was stolen and used without their permission for merch. Automatic doesn't respect the users they asked for help.
Obligatory don't harrass staff regarding this, all of this is representative of a problem with Automatic, not the people who work for them and I imagine the meager team working on Tumblr is doing their best with the few tools they have.
#if i see one more 'tumblr users not paying for premium is the problem' im gonna lose it#they had their chance to get help from the users and totally destroyed any trust most of us had in them#because they showed us that looking good to advertisers and upkeeping conservative values were more important than#the people they asked to help them upkeep the site#if you want to blame anyone for tumblr premium going south blame Matt and Automatic#not the users who made the informed decision not to use it#tumblr premium#tumblr shutdown#predestrogen#matt mullenweg#tumblr staff#the queerest place on the internet

On the subject of "Where to flee when Tumblr goes down," I'd like to put out a pitch for Coin Return.
Coin Return is a classic style internet forum that is entirely user owned and operated. From their website:
Coin Return is a community-owned online forum and non-profit organization Member Supported Coin Return is always ad-free thanks to the financial support of its membership, but there is no obligation to contribute and no cost to participate. Human Moderated Good moderation is too important to leave up to AI. Human volunteers keep our community free of bigotry, trolls, and harassment. Community Owned We are not beholden to corporate ownership and have no obligation except to provide our members with a fun, reliable, and safe third space. User Driven No algorithm controls what you see. Watch the threads you want without being baited into engaging with topics you're not interested in.
Coin Return initially grew out of the Penny Arcade forums (I know! I know); the thing is, the PA forums had basically nothing to do with PA, and almost nobody on the forums actually read the comic anymore. It was just that it was an old fashioned message board with a big population. When PA decided to shut the forums down, the forum community decided to band together to make their own, wholly independent forums. So, if you ever had a problem with Penny Arcade, please rest assured that this community is entirely separate from that organization, even if it sort of grew out of the community around it.
I, for one, will probably only hang out on CoRe. I'm tired of social media, I'm tired of corporations, I'm tired of algorithms, I just want, basically, a community space.
CoRe is VERY NEW -- we only just opened up to users on April 1st (yeah, I know, choices were made), so if you join up, you, YES YOU, can be part of the site's future direction as well!
If you decide to show up there, I'm LucidSeraph. Drop into the Chat forums and make a thread for Tumblr refugees!

if yall want to have fun on the internet while feeling like apart of a community you should join neocities and make your own personal website im so srs.
you’ll need to learn html coding but there are loads of free templates you can use! this layout generator is a great place to start, and neocities also has their own starter guide. i promise coding is not as scary as it looks, once you learn the basics it is rewarding & fun!
having a personal website on neocities is like having a little virtual house that you can freely customise how you want then you can go and visit other ppls virtual houses. it’s comfy, slow-paced and very welcoming compared to current social media.
if you don’t want to join, i still recommend checking out peoples websites ^_^ they are interactive works of art! keep in mind most are best viewed on a computer rather than mobile.
here is my website if you’d like to check it out :3
#i use neocities to host my art portfolio too ^_^ Its something ill always have access to unlike if tumblr/twitter/etc shutdown#neocities#also i think only a handful of websites being popular on the modern internet SUCKS… lets bring back websurfing#its like a virtual treasure hunt!#and its free!

Supreme Court to Scrutinize Internet Shutdowns in Landmark Case
Supreme Court to Scrutinize Internet Shutdowns in Landmark Case @neosciencehub #SupremeCourt #InternetShutdown #neosciencehub #digitalrights #stateauthorityinIndia
The Supreme Court recently took up a pivotal case concerning the regulation of internet shutdowns across India, in response to a writ petition filed by the Software Freedom Law Center. The Center has challenged the rationale behind the imposition of 12 internet shutdowns totalling over 71 hours last year, ostensibly to prevent cheating during examinations. Senior advocate Vrinda Grover,…

I know it had no consequence on anything important, but this does feel melancholic to me.
I grew up watching the shows there. It was a big part of me getting hooked on the franchise.
But at the same time, it signifies the change in the internet. It's not the same anymore.
We used to have websites and forums. Now we have platforms. You play by the rules of the big corporations.
I don't think it's all doom and gloom: it's just how the internet has turned out.
But it is melancholic. The digital world I once walked has faded into the aether.

I'm really glad they finally released Baldur's Gate 3 for Xbox last night
But downloading this game is worth 75% of my internet for the month, and from when I bought it last night to now it's 12% downloaded.
So this is gonna take forever. And when we get there I might have to buy more internet for this month.
#but i did turn off the auto shutdown on the new xbox this morning#so it should stay on and keep downloading all day#im hoping its playable by tomorrow morning#(and that my internet bill still resets on the 17th)
