The weird radical/revolutionary politic larpers on this site are so allergic to political pragmatism I swear lmao. I am definitely left of the Democratic Party and I am certainly voting for Joe Biden in November. Not because I like him (I don’t). He is absolutely horrific on Gaza and that’s only the top (and priority considering there is a genocide going on there) of a list of complaints I have about him. I even voted uncommitted in my state’s presidential primary (the Pennsylvania one; I had to write it in) to protest. However, I’m still thinking pragmatically. Trump has said things that make me credibly think he will be worse on Gaza (insane that being worse on Gaza than Biden is possible but it is unfortunately), and that’s only the tip of the iceberg. Project 2025, the potential for him to appoint more deeply conservative justices, more of his aggressively screwing over poor and middle class people with his tax policies. And does anyone else remember the spike in hate crimes after the race was called for him in 2016? Before he was even inaugurated? Whether people vote or not in November we will still have to deal with one of these two men in office come January unless all of the internet ancom larpers overthrow the government by then (doubt), so I’d rather deal with the one who will be marginally less bad and who didn’t try to overthrow the government. Can’t have your revolution if nobody’s alive cause you kept pushing off politically participating because there was no perfect option. 👍

Hello! So this is kind of a heavy ask and I totally understand if you don’t feel like replying, but I just thought I’d reach out on the off chance. I’ve been curious about Rizzles for a while, just never getting around to watching, and I somehow ended up reading fic before I actually have lol and I LOVE your fic sm in particular, thank you for that. Unfortunately I did also however come across some …. Less great facts about Angie…. I went into a spiral and did find her saying she doesn’t consider herself part of that party anymore and pretty sure she supported differently most recently (thank god). But I still can’t shake the horrible knowledge of what came before, it’s making me insane, and is really putting me off starting the show which I was SO excited about. I just wondered if you had any words of solace about this? We should let people grow and change right? That’s how the world gets better? Before we dive in, thanks for letting me know you love my fics. :) Now, I should preface this all by saying that I have plenty of problematic faves. There's not a band in the world that I've listened to more than The Smiths, and Morrissey is just the fuckin wooooooorst. So I obviously am capable of looking beyond someone's unsavory qualities to enjoy art they've helped make.

I'm aging myself here, but I was familiar with Angie Harmon's character on Law & Order well before Rizzoli & Isles. If you never saw it, Abbie Carmichael was the, like, token conservative character to contrast with all the liberal New Yorkers. She was from Texas, anti-abortion, pro-gun, pro-death penalty. She sucked, I hated her, and so I went into Rizzoli & Isles with an Anti-Harmon bias. Were it not for the fact that Sasha Alexander is such a fucking smoke show I don't think I ever would have watched. And then I got hooked.

It does sound like she's changed her mind about some things, and good for her I guess, and if that makes you feel better about watching the show then hold on to it! If it's not enough for you to enjoy the show, that's okay too. We all have our dealbreakers, myself included. But like she can be a bad person and you can like the show, if you want to.

Here's how I see it: Angie Harmon, girly girl Republican, was told by the producers to play Jane as a rough and tumble tomboy and she overshot it by SO MUCH that she accidentally created a lesbian icon and it really resonated with a lot of us and that's okay! She played against type and inexplicably crushed it. She made the most lesbian possible choice nearly every time. It makes me crazy every time I watch it. Abbie Carmichael was NOT hot. Not even a little bit hot. But Jane Rizzoli is hot.

Further to that, I am personally doing god's work by making that accidental lesbian icon have lots of fictional sex with women (well, mostly woman). Angie Harmon complained out loud that she was always "the man" in the fan fiction? Too bad, girl, I'm going to have you laying pipe in internet stories EIGHT YEARS after your stupid show ended and people are gonna eat it up.

But I realize your stated problem isn't with reading fan fiction, it's with watching the show, so listen. She's hot in it, Sasha Alexander is hot in it, it's a fun, dumb little show. She's playing a cop, so you should at least hate her a little bit anyway. Give the show a try and don't make yourself feel guilty if you enjoy it. And if you can't get over her politics at the time, don't be too hard on yourself for that either. At least there's fan fiction. :)

At the highest level, looking at this as how it will effect the citizenry: This will change very little. Unfortunately, that's because almost nothing was going to be passed into law in the 118th Congress. So there wasn't much to reduce. And the critical stuff will get passed with the same amount of pain as it has in previous years. It will be painful, but the government will get funded, and the debt ceiling will raise as needed. The price to do it will make us all sick, but, that's not really new is it?

McCarthy gave away the store. I can't say that enough. The one vote threshold to call for a vote of no confidence is insane. However, I don't think many no confidence votes will occur. What I DO think will happen is that it will be a constant threat. Kevin didn't like your tweet? time for a vote. < that's a joke, but... the minute he caves to a first stupid demand, it's over, and based on the last four days, he has the moral temerity of jello.

The already glacial pace of Congressional action will slow further. If a Democrat makes a statement that Boebert hates, and she demands that McCarthy punish the dem, and he doesn't? She can threaten to call for a No Confidence Vote. Now, obvs, Kevin doesn't want that to actually go down and embarrass him further, so he will placate her. Maybe that means caving to the direct demand, or maybe it means she gets an extra 50k in funding from his PAC. (he did this to get the 14 votes that moved. He gave them money. literally. cash in exchange for the vote. i am not joking. it is that broken in here)

This is going to give the AltRight side of the GoP a lot of potential power. Like. A crap ton of power. But there is a plus side to that. It's power, but in the same sense that receiving a big bucket of gunpowder is a lot of potential power. Sometimes, they'll use it and do things that delight their base and get them interviewed on all the shows, and terrify everyone left of them. And sometimes, they're going to blow their own hands off. Kevin will be forced to let them do what they want, and they have made clear that they want chaos. They do not want a functioning federal government, and when they manage to break something, everyone will know who to blame.

Now this part is me speculating. I know it sounds weird, but: I think that this is going to empower the AltRight in congress, and that will weaken the GoP base.

Not the zealots, they aren't going anywhere. But this is not going to be two years of bragging. It's going to be two years of republican in-fighting, which has gotten very personal, very fast. It is going to be two years of airing grievances on the news and the internet. It is going to be two years of coverage of them fighting and fighting to pass a bill by a margin of one, only for it to be DoA when it hits the Senate. It's going to be two years of the AltRight fucking around, and then rapidly finding out.

There will be people who are on the edge of Strong Support who will drift away from the party out of shame to be associated with it. There will also be folk who double down and love the GoP harder for blowing shit up. The thing is though, Most of America prefers a veneer of centrist civility, and the shenanigans that Kevin's Speakership will encourage are not going to be civil. Most Independents absolutely want that civility. The GoP does not have room to lose support. Texas was a 6pt race in 2020. Texas. The GoP is alive now because of REDMAP. which was hella effective and evil

2022's midterms should have been a bloodbath. The party in power always gets destroyed. That's how it goes. Instead, Kevin has a four seat majority. There was no red wave. There was barely a ripple. All of the things that dems ran on in 22 are going to happen again, but louder in the 118th congress. This congress is going to alienate part of their base in order to keep the others. It is going to be embarrassing for moderates and centrists, and it is going to be a joke every time Kevin has to kneel and beg for permission to do his job.

None of this is a guarantee that the GoP won't gain power or do terrible things, but within Congress, the last four days shot every republican reelection campaign in the foot. Thousands of campaign ads will be made against them using this. They looked like fools, and their opponents will make sure everyone remembers that in 2024

My biggest concern is this: Congressional Republicans have a figurehead now, not a leader, and when there is no one leading a mob, it becomes a riot.

it's hard to pinpoint one moment because i honestly genuinely believe that it's the best sport in the world just in terms of pure mechanics and objective viewing enjoyment and live crowd atmosphere so it's easy to get hooked once you actually watch it... i've been on and off with hockey fandom itself and took a few years away from tumblr until recently but i'd say it was a mix of just watching games + discovering fandom spaces on tumblr/reading fic on ao3 + having a decent home team at the time + canadian tax etc.

ngl i think most of the people i first met in hockey fandom eventually moved onto bts (or k-pop in general) lmfaooo but i met @regularseason when i was in 11th grade making connor mcdavid gifsets and now i am somehow 25 years old. we have seen so much on this vast internet together ❤️

Yes, I probably sound like a brat. And maybe I am a brat. Moving is so insanely stressful, having your finances in the air is stressful, trying to figure out if your roof or driveway is more likely to survive the harsh winter that everyone is constantly warning you about is stressful.

Yes we are SO lucky to be able to afford a house, and a house in a blue state no less. I wish that negated the weight of financial stress, which we had zero of in Texas. It’s an adjustment for us and the internet is totally not the place to vent about it. I apologize.

other than using lolcow as a source which is insanely fucked up as is can we just acknowledge rq the transphobia and ableism in some of the screenshots texas decided to post? whether any point made in those screenshots are true or not, which i doubt, texas could have very easily shared those without the screenshot that literally only has someone shaming dreamie for using neopronouns, with the r slur there too, im assuming texas’ intent was to make dreamie out to be a bad person with certain screenshots, but they could’ve just posted those screenshots on their own, the addition of screenshots that are quite literally only shaming dreamie for shit like pronouns and even have slurs in them really undoes any “good” they were intending to do by “calling dreamie out”, and just further solidifies their bigotry, because i’m sure that entire thread wasnt screenshotted, yet they decided to go out of their way to add screenshots with slurs and bigotry for absolutely no reason because it doesnt further their point at all (apologies for only using they/them for texas i don’t know their pronouns i checked their tumblr but there was none in their bio)

exactly my point, nonny. I wouldn't accept lolcow as a source for something against texas or mack either, especially if the screenshots were alongside blatant slurs. As neurodivergent women (based on pronouns & what I've seen from them in the past), they should know better, and will be harassed and made fun of themselves just as easily if given the chance. The fact that they stand by the r slur alone, given their own presumed struggles being ND, is both baffling and disappointing. They're sharing a cesspool full of bigotry spouted by people that can't get their way on sites like tumblr, twitter, certain reddit subs, etc. The sole purpose is to harass people while pushing incorrect information, pictures of innocents that are uninvolved, doxxing, etc. Could there be something true posted on that site? Sure. But there's no way to treat it as a trusted source of information given the amount of hostile bigotry in that environment. For (somewhat) milder examples, would you use r/thed*nald, 4chan, or even just plain old simsecret as a trusted source for something regarding a marginalized person? Absolutely not.

The irony in trying to "call someone out" while being excessively ableist and transphobic says plenty, as well. But they don't understand that, because the intent is not to fight against something wrong. They don't care about victims or minorities, they care about seeming right and hurting those they disagree with. it's performative, as usual- and more importantly, it's harassment. I won't be answering anymore asks on this topic or engaging with Texas for Dreamie's sake (and the fact that Texas is incredibly weak and blatantly uneducated in the topics they're pushing), but I wanted to post this one for those that might not realize what lolcow is and what it stands for. When getting information from the internet, please consider the source and exercise critical thinking skills.

So, favorite character from each modern Disney TVA show you've seen like: Phineas and Ferb, Fish Hooks, Kick Buttowski, Motorcity, Tron Uprising, Gravity Falls, Wander Over Yonder, Penn Zero, Pickle and Peanut, Future Worm, Billy Dilley, The 7D, Star vs, Milo Murphy's Law, Rapunzel's Tangled Adventure, Ducktales 2017, Big Hero 6 The Series, Big City Greens, Amphibia, Owl House, Molly McGee, and Hamster & Gretel?

Okay so given your starting point of Phineas and Ferb: (I.e. from the 2010's to present day, though I know P and F started sooner), and omitting any shows I haven't seen...: Phineas and Ferb: It's Doof. This was both easy as it was predictable. Look he's well loved by most of the internet for a reason, being a charming character who despite being evil you can kinda get why as well as easily see why he flat out retired from trying to get petty revenge with over the to pinators and his relationship with Perry was amazing. Fish Hooks: Yeah I tried to find one but I was never really that heavily into the show nor attached to any of these characters. Motorcity: Texas. I love my dumb redneck son. Gravity Falls: Stan. The Man, the myth, the legend, the wallet full of other people's money he conned or pick pocketed, who else could it be? Out of the cast, which is pretty stacked, he's the one that just comes easiest to me whenever I think about or write him and the fact he ended up being shockingly layered just made him better. Randy Cunningham: Theresa as I thought she and Randy were neat together. I don't have a huge relationship with the show but it wasn't bad at all. Wander Over Yonder: Wander himself. I just think Jack did such a godo job with him and he's such a unique character: While an obliviouslly kind unintetional trickster isn't new, the way he acted and behaved as one felt so damn nice to see. Star Vs The Forces of Evil: Tom.. just Tom. He's brilliantly written, and has an impressive character arc going from a fairly loathsome stalker.. to a kind young man who wants to be better but dosen't know how. There's a reason he got a whole retrospective out of me and still lives rent free in me and @jess-the-vampire's head Milo Murphy's Law: Milo himself. Al did a great job with him and I love his kind nature, lazzie faire attitude toward the batshit insanity around him and just genuine charm. There's a reason despite his bad luck field destroying everything around him the only two people in town who outright hate him are someone who secretly wants to be him and a thorughly unlikeable prick whose thorughly miserable. Being played by Weird Al in what is so far his only starring cartoon role dosen't hurt. Ducktales: This is a monumentally hard one but ... it has to be Donald, with Lena a close second thanks to her deep character arc and Kimiko Glenn's performance. But let's face it this is probably THE best version of Donald Duck, kind, thoughtful, a wonderful father but still the loveable mess we all know. While also somehow being the wolverine of his family's x-men. Big City Greens: Gloria, Gloria in a chealsea's day o, gloria. Relatable, hilarious, and having , as is a theme here, a good character arc, who dosen't love her? Amphibia: Sasha. I mean I love a lot of characters from that, Maddy and Marcy would also have a good shot at this, but once again it's the character arc that wins out, going from a controlling bully to a capable leader and a kind and thoughtful young woman. The Owl House: Hunter. once again you can partially blame @jess-the-vampire but frankly the character just made a splash from minute one and the more layers you peeled back on this bad sad boy, the more he became one of my faviorites, and easily the performance of zeno's career. The Ghost and MollyMcGee: Libby. I loved my mildly depressed boehemian daughter.

I don’t know, man. On the one hand, capitalism is an oppressive hellscape of exploitation and control, and I’m way too punk rock to work for The Man. But on the other hand, there are so many things that Need To Get Done, and it feels wrong to even fantasize about shirking my responsibility to contribute. Not to mention the financial necessity of working, forever. Like, I will literally never be able to retire or anything like that. I’ve changed my mind hundreds of times about how I can fit myself into the job market without going insane. And I’ve determined that it’s less about my title and more about what fills my day. If I can be useful, make people’s lives easier, take plenty of breaks, and do no harm to people or the environment, I’ll do anything. Right now, I’m a social worker, and that ticks most of the boxes, so I’m alright. But it would be really cool to be, like, an electrician or plumber, or to foster kids, or to become a doula or a school counselor, or anything in National Parks/ forest services. I just want to avoid bullshit busy work, because that’s the shit that kills me.

A Brief Update on McCusker v. Haney: September 2022

Just to keep people up to date on the docket in the court case since apparently this is now my thing:

[Brief Reminder: Riley is the plaintiff, she sued Maggie saying that she was legally responsible for her pain and suffering both from abuse, mismanagement and injuries. In response Maggie's lawyers* say that there were many people including her parents, her medical providers, and Tom Forster who were also involved in managing her gymnastics career. These people are 3rd party defendants]

The most recent filings involve a sports psychologist, Robert Andrews (pictured above with Simone Biles), that Haney's side added as a 3rd party defendant asking to be removed. The judge will rule on this without a hearing.

His lawyer made three arguments:

The New Jersey court lacks personal jurisdiction. That is that he's never lived in or done business in New Jersey. He never traveled there to see Riley, he never spoke to her, her family, or her coaches over the telephone or email and he does all his business out of Houston, Texas which is the only place he communicated with her. In other words, since there are no Federal issues in this case New Jersey has no claim to be able to "touch" him. [Comment: This is probably a winning issue that will get him out of the case]

He was characterized by Maggie's lawyers as being in charge of Riley's mental health but not only did he have limited contact with her he does not now nor has he ever provided patient therapy. He simply doesn't provide the kind of services that would attach him to this case. [Comment: Maggie's lawyers are going to have to provide proof to their contention, which they will have a chance to do at the hearing. My gut says that this will likely go in his favor as well but that's not as clear cut as the first issue]

They claim Maggie's lawyers never properly served them. [Comment: Their argument is actually kind of a stretch here, which amounts to that Maggie's lawyers served them by mail as an out of state defendant and they refused to open the mail and let the time pass. It seemed insane to me that you could claim lack of service by refusing to open your mail and a glance at the New Jersey civil procedures for serving out of state defendants suggests that this is in fact... not how that works.  As I understand it making this argument helps support point 1 which his stronger argument and it’s a fail safe because this is the only point in the case that he can make this argument.  Cavate I am not a lawyer, either in New Jersey, nor do I play one on the Internet. This doesn't seem like a winning argument here.]

The only other thing to note in this document is that Maggie's lawyers misnamed his employer (Institute of Sports Performance versus Institute for Sports Performance). Not super important but is kind of amusing.

*There are a number of parties including the gym, Victoria Levine, ect, for my sanity referred to as Maggie's lawyers.
