Instead Came Your Arms
Alistair x f!Hawke | E | WC: 43,500 (Complete) | DA2, Act 3 | Second Chances | Assassination Plot | Grief | Hurt/Comfort | Fast Burn | Fereldan Politics | Exiled Alistair | Angst with a Happy Ending | Flangst
I am so excited to finally share the fic that I blasted out (lovingly) from mid-March to early May for the @templartationsexchange. I was fortuitously matched with Starrshine Girl and was instantly inspired by an ask for an Alistair x f!Hawke fic (though we did not match on that pairing).
The idea I had was this: what if I smash two people at rock bottom together like cupcakes? Then I went fully insane. Please enjoy!

Summary:
In the wake of her mother’s murder and the Qunari invasion of Kirkwall, Flora Hawke is adrift in grief and guilt. When she rescues a hapless drunk and fellow Fereldan from attempted murder in the midst of a street brawl, she’s astonished to learn the man had once pretended to the Fereldan Throne. Six years exiled from his homeland, freshly installed in Kirkwall in search of work and purpose, Alistair wakes from a rough night in an unexpected predicament: stashed for safekeeping in the home of the Champion of Kirkwall. Holed up together in Flora’s empty home, the pair work to uncover an assassination plot against the would-be king before it catches up to him. Tangled in parallels and coincidences, still battling their own shadows, Flora and Alistair surrender to the pull between them and find their way back into the light.
Excerpt below the cut 👇
Flora Hawke carves a slurry of food and the sticky remnants of mead and ale from a checked bit of the table with a dagger, her face scrunched at nothing and everything. The soupy Solace air followed her into The Hanged Man and her sweaty short stay heaps regret onto her bitter mood. A year ago, Isabela would have been sitting across from her, bottle rolling against her cheek, appraising her frankly until Flora would look up and tell her to spit it out, whatever it was. But there’s too much to spit out and the empty space across from her mocks her.
She paid attention to everything but the things that mattered.
Little sisters. Bootleg relics. Lilies.
A sheaf of dark hair tumbles over her face as she scrapes the sludge on the edge of the table. She leaves it for the same reason she’d left her stupid kaddis smear in its pot. Flora doesn’t want to be seen. The only regular who’d dare pester her is out— she’d timed her presence to coincide with a guild meeting Varric couldn’t weasel out of. Only Norah is blinkered enough to bother her each time she whisks close, a woman who knows everyone’s business and hasn’t a clue what to do with it.
“Gracing us with your presence again, then, Hawke?” she says in her naked Lowtown drawl.
It forces Flora to wrangle with why she’s come. Sparing Orana, Bodahn and Sandal her apathy is a flimsy lie she cooked up to cover for this restless craving inside her. She wanted the energy of this place, its lumbering chaos. And though nothing quite stops the mill of paralyzing thoughts, the apian hum of conversation twitches in her belly with a forgotten warmth.
Closer to the bar is a piteous installment, hair the color of dirty bathwater stringy around his glazed face. His beard is born of neglect rather than intention, and though they could use a wash, his clothes are decently tailored. Whoever he is, he’s got the familiar hunch of a hollowed out man, curling his body around his failures. It looks enough like her own slump that she’s mostly ignored him, but now the brandy he’s been tossing back speaks.
“You there. What’s your name, beautiful?”
Slurring aside, it appears he’s attempting to flirt. This should be good.
“It’s Norah, love. Get you another?”
Norah’s never been one to stop someone from drinking themselves blind so long as the coin flows.
“Love,” he sings back, surprised. “People aren’t supposed to be nice these days, you know. But I guess you didn’t get that missive.” Unexpectedly loquacious.
“Can’t say I did. What’s got you in a pucker, love?”
His head lolls as he lifts it and he fashions a smile behind that scruffy beard.
“Very little so long as you’re nearby.” Not bad for a man right clattered.
Norah balls her hands on her hips and lifts her brow in that magical way she does, her artful skepticism opening up patrons like tins of anchovies.
“I’m in exile,” he drawls, intoxication only brightening the Fereldan color of his voice.
He must be new in town.
“Ohhh. Fancy,” she says, flouncing to the bar for another brandy. “Haven’t heard that one recently. What’d you do?”
A whole table full of off-shift foundry workers twist and lean, craning to look at this latest bit of gristle to chew. They’re mostly unfamiliar, a bunch of townie-types possessed with an abundance of fierce pride and little else. They’d give up their front teeth just to prove Lowtown’s might.
Or defend a native maid from the covetous eyes of a Fereldan cur.
The man flops back in his chair, smiling up at Norah like it’s the last tool in his bloody kit.
“Looked a bit too much like the king for comfort. I’ve got his nose, you see. Can’t be having that.”
A surly voice sails across the room.
“Ain’t got no kings in the Marches!”
The locals perk up. Oh joy. Flora braces herself for that kind of night. While she hasn’t exactly been around, it’s been a spell since the place quivered with barely contained savagery. So ends the brittle peace that followed the expulsion of the Qunari.
“Riiiight. You’re free,” he says to nobody, sloshing his cup around as he gestures quotation marks.
“Yer a bloody wet dog, aren’t ye?”
“Now now. How about you fine gentlemen mind your pretty faces and let a man forget himself for another half hour.”
Norah returns with a pint and watches as the rubes dig in, sparring with the man who seems wholly unmoved by their contempt. Instead he delights in the acid repartee.
“There’s a mouth on that one,” she observes. “For better or worse. Needling that lot?” Norah shakes her head.
“He’s going to get the piss knocked out of him if he keeps going,” Flora grumbles. “You’d think in the five years since the Blight ended they’d find something else to entertain them besides harassing the nearest Fereldan, but here we are.”
“The glue that binds them,” sighs Norah, wiping her hands on a cloth. Flora slips from the conversation, reflexively scanning the foundry workers and the Fereldan for weapons they didn’t turn in at the bar. Corff had once dubbed her his favorite employee for the number of fights she’d squelched over the years.
“Good to see you, Champion. Place isn’t the same without you.”
Maker. It was only a matter of time before they laid the name on her. The honorific hadn’t been bestowed without provisos, ones she doesn’t have the energy to outwit at the moment. And so the title sticks like a splinter, at least until she surfaces long enough to make proper use of it. If she ever does.
Flora watches again, grateful for the distraction. The drunk has fobbed them off for a few minutes, but she doesn’t trust the truce. Their taunts may have settled, but their smoldering ire is still firmly trained upon him. A precise puff of air is all it would take to ignite it into a proper blaze.
It’s unclear if he’s itching for a fight or a licking, not that he has a prayer for the former. Any capability he might have had is swallowed up in languor. He’s big inside that deceptive slouch, shoulders piled up with muscle like a farrier.
The man catches her looking.
“Aren’t you a curious one,” he says. For a fleeting instant, Flora thinks there might be a dish underneath all the neglect. “See anything interesting?”
“Not in the way you’re thinking, Serah,” she answers, raising her ale to him. He leans back to admire her, glazed like a Maker-forsaken fruit tart. She needs his attention like a hot poker to the eye.
“Well. I’ll be here all night,” he mumbles, still smiling. “If your tune changes.”

So if I'm on it... I feel the fandom has (or had in early days when there were many people, it's only a handful who still in) a huge problem with Luisa's hyper-feminisation.
Yes, I'm talking about the poytrayal of Luisa as somebody obsessed with pink, delicate things. At the same time being unable to hurt a fly.
Don't get me wrong, there is nothing wrong with the idea that Luisa would love lace, cotton and everything what is associated with (traditional) feminity. She can do it all she wants, that's womderful. The problem is that sometimes people act like this is the only way Luisa can express her gentle and feminine side by acting ONLY the way stereotypical feminization wants. And turn it to the most extreme point. Because, essentially it actually makes her look more masculine. As it often does look like a over-compensation for her more masculine-associated traits physical, which she CANNOT control (deep voice, very tall height and muscles). Why does Luisa have to be pushed into the whole girly girl thing so much conpared to the rest? It just looks like ppl try to make it up for what in her is not typical for women. So if she can't look small and delicate in stature and strenght she has to be the most feminine personality and interests-wise not to be concidered a man in a dress. Which is VERY messed up.
Because, surprize, Luisa is not more masculine by default to have and compensate for it. Why is the idea of Luisa wearing pants seems to frustate more people compared to the other girls? Why is she the one who would be jealous of pre-wecid Isabela's style? When Dolores and Mirabel would probably have far more reasons to do so just because of trauma. Luisa can enjoy masculine things amd femiline things. She doesn't have to go all over with feminization to be put in line with the rest of the girls.
And what is even worse is that by extension in a lot of the stereotypical potrayals of Luisa her positive masculine-associated traits are being swapped onto the opposite ones, which are aften viewed as negative and stereotypically being labeled on women. Such as always needing protection/somebody who speak up to her and saved her (while we clearly see Luisa as extremely protective over Mirabel during Surface Pressure). Or exaggerate her emotionality and vulnerability to the point she breaks into tears for the smallest things. Which honestly has very misogynistic implications. As it gets an idea that women (and feminine people as whole) are always weaker and unable to defend themselves. Or that their emotions are always very strong and irrational. And this is definitely not good thing to imply. As I did say, it turns into a godamn misogyny at this point where for Luisa being girly associated with the literal opposite of her character.
Again, there's nothing wrong with imagining that Luisa would love feminine, girly things. But there's also nothing wrong with Luisa preffering practical and simple style. And pushing her out of character just to make her more conventionally feminine isn't a good thing to do. She's a woman regardless of what she looks like and pushing the idea that she MUST look sertain way to be one is really bad. I can understand that most people never think that they make it all look like attepmt to compensate for non-typical look and actually have good intentions. Wanting to show that the way your body looks doesn't have to match your personality/interestsm. And that women like Luisa can still be very feminine. But in the end the entire thing gets very dimolished by the fact that Luisa is being basically forced into hyperbolisation where she can't express anything even remotely related to masculinity.
#this was bothering me for a LONG time#and by this I mean like almost year or so#let luisa wear pretty things let luisa wear pants let luisa wear her casual outfit let luisa wear whatever she wants#encanto#luisa madrigal#encanto analysis#fandom rant

Encanto TV show requirements (will be added on to as I get more ideas):
Cleaning day episode
Prank war episode
Singing, lots of singing
Solo songs for everyone
Actually talking about everyone's trauma
Cute couple moments
How things have changed in the encanto
One-on-one interactions between every possible pair of Madrigals
Christmas special
Mariano and Dolores getting married
Pedro lore/flashbacks
LGBTQ characters who aren't regulated to the background
Either a rewritten Family Madrigal or Columbia, Mi Encanto is the theme song
Someone not forgiving Abuela for... well, everything (Isabela seems like the most likely)
I kind of want to see how all the adults act while drunk
Can we get to know some characters outside the family?
Adding onto that, there's no way none of them have any friends. Let's meet these friends.
You can't tell me that everyone loves the Madrigals either
I'd like to meet Agustin and Felix's families
Triplet shenanigans!

SNIPPET 44
[Naimeryn has a favor to ask of Teia]
CW/TW: strong language, brief suggestive themes.
NOTE: thanks to @ / manilamanzo on Threads for helping me finally find a unique endearment, in Italian, for Lucanis to use for Naimy. Any snippets where he calls her “mi Vida” will be updated in time muahahaha.
ALSO NOTE: This snippet falls chronologically sometime after The Scene They Cut (I believe this was Snippet 11, but I’ll edit the post if I’m wrong). There’s a hint who Naimy’s dad is in this snippet. Comment if you catch it ;)
——————————————————————————
“Teia,” Naimeryn sidled up to her, lowering her voice. “Can I talk to you for a second? It’s for a.. personal matter.”
“Oooh, consider me intrigued,” she flashed her most winsome smile. “Vi, entertain the boys for a bit.”
“You know that can *only* be bad for you, right?” Viago asked Lucanis as Teia swept Naimeryn away, towards the stairs to her private quarters. Naimeryn flushed and hoped Lucanis did not believe him.
“I assume… everyone knows, then?” She mumbled.
Teia linked her arm through hers and gave her hand a little squeeze.
“He was *not* subtle when he stole you away from the celebration,” she laughed. “Tell me, where did you go? What did you do? I must know *everything!*”
Embarrassment was not the only warmth that spread through Naimeryn. She had spent so many years all alone — even after finally befriending Amaya and Greta, they’d been gone from Weisshaupt more often than not. But now… now she had so many people who cared and were interested in being around her, in hearing her stories, in talking with her. The team, Antoine, Evka, Isabela… she was so grateful Teia was one of them.
As they settled together onto Teia’s couch, Naimeryn recounted the events at the river with flushed cheeks and a fluttering heart, unsure if it was okay to be detailed, but too aware of her captive audience to hold back. The two women laughed and giggled and squealed, Teia expressing congratulations and excitement on her behalf. Naimeryn thought again of all of the friends she now had who supported her in this, were *happy* for her, and for Lucanis. She buried her face in her hands, smiling so hard her face hurt.
“Ah, it is good to see you so happy,” Teia told her. “When we met, you were such a dejected little thing. And as I got to know you, as someone who also came from nothing… well, I’m just glad you found each other in this great big mess.”
“But, I have directed the conversation entirely in the direction *I* desired,” she said, leaning back. “What was it you wanted to talk to me about?”
Naimeryn pulled her hands away from her face, nerves fluttering in her stomach. She took a deep breath. “He called me something that night. Something in Antivan, and I don’t know a word of it. I know it would be difficult to find the time amidst —“
She waved her hand vaguely in the air. “— all this. But I was wondering if, maybe… you could help me learn Antivan?”
“*Stop*,” Teia gasped, beginning to laugh. She became deadly serious again just as quickly. “It is too sweet, I may perish. I think this is an excellent plan! When we are through, Lucanis will not know what hit him.”
“Yeah?” Naimeryn grinned what felt like from ear to mangled ear. “You’ll do it?”
“Of course!” Teia opened her arms and waved her hands towards herself, and Naimeryn accept d her embrace. “It will be my pleasure.”
“Davrin, I’m telling you, you have a deathwish!” They heard Lucanis shout.
“Oops,” Naimeryn giggled. “Hangry Davrin is *no* fun.”
A banging at the door. “Rook, if you make me miss out on the khatchipuri while it’s hot, I *will* throw you into the Deep Roads myself!”
Teia and Naimeryn burst out laughing, and Viago opened the door to allow the other two entrance. Lucanis looked just as nervous as Viago had told him he needed to be, poor thing. Davrin scowled at her with his arms crossed over his chest.
“I forgot it’s khatchipuri night,” Naimeryn said to Teia, patting her friend on the arm as she stood. “I will willingly throw *myself* into the Deep Roads if I miss it.”
“We must have Bellara here to make it for us one night,” Teia said, standing as well. “I find I am quite curious.”
“It is good,” Lucanis told her. Without thinking much of it, Naimeryn had wandered right over to him and wound her fingers through his. He looked a bit surprised, but closed his hand quickly around hers, as though he thought she’d change her mind. *No chance.* She fought the urge to lay her head onto his shoulder. They hadn’t really talked about what they were and weren’t comfortable with just yet.
“Yes, good. So let’s go. Before we don’t get any,” Davrin said impatiently, waving them back out of Teia’s door.
“All right, all right,” Naimeryn laughed. “We’re going!”
“Rook, wait,” Teia dragged her back, whispering into her good ear. “What did he call you? I’m dying to know.”
Naimeryn was sure she’d somehow mispronounce it, but she would never forget the way his voice had sounded when he said it. “Oh, forgive my pronunciation, but I believe it was ‘mia fiamma?’”
Teia blinked at her, and she thought maybe she was remembering wrong. Then a slow, knowing smile spread across Teia’s face.
“What?” Naimeryn asked. “What does it mean?”
“Naimeryn Surana Thorne, if you don’t get your ass down these stairs I’m going to sling you over my shoulder!” Davrin’s shout made her jump out of her skin.
“Who the *fuck* told you my middle name?!” She shouted, spinning to start down the stairs after him, Lucanis’s laugh mingling with their continued bickering. Naimeryn would not find out what Lucanis had called her that night. As the three of them disappeared down the stairs, Viago put his arm around Teia’s shoulders.
“Lucanis calls her *his flame,*” she smirked up at him. Viago thought for a moment, then nodded.
“Suitable, for a woman out to kill *gods.* Someone strong enough to destroy anything in her path.”
“*And,*” Teia rolled her eyes at him, not surprised he thought everything was about the fight, “someone who can shine light into the darkness, illuminate the path ahead, warm the loneliness away.”
“Romantic,” Viago scowled. “I suppose you *do* have his number better than I.”
“I love when you admit I’m better at something than you are,” Teia laughed, and soundly knocked her door shut with her hip.

Hi there. I really like your fics, (specially the hogwarts legacy and the Encanto ones) so can I ask you for an Encanto fic in which M!reader (or GN!reader if you want more people to feel included) struggles to control their gift which is manipulating any forms of fire. Abuela gets mad for the chaos they have caused and the people are scared of them.
The reader is feeling really bad because they feel that their gift can only cause destruction but then Bruno appears and comforts them and tell them that all of the people are afraid of him too and that the gift they have is truly wonderfull.
If this doesn't bother you can you make this before the events of the movie? Maybe the reader can be still a child who got their gift not so long ago. And also that their mother is Pepa.
Thank you so much and sorry if my explanation was so long and impossible to understand. English isn't my first language. Have a nice day/ night!!
A/N: Thank you so much anon! So sorry for the delay, I ended up with chickenpox for the past few weeks and it is has taken me a while to recover. Hope you enjoy!
Destruction
child!Madrigal reader x Bruno Madrigal (platonic!)
The whole village was a flurry with anticipation. There was to be a celebration in the village square and the entire Madrigal family was helping with the decorations and preparations. Your cousin Isabela had created the most beautiful flower decorations, and you took one of the flowers in your hand to smell the sweetness of it. A little bit of pollen got into your nose and… “Achoo!” You sneezed, triggering your gift to set the poor, unsuspecting flower aflame.
“Ah! No, no, no!” You muttered, as you tried to stamp the flames out. In your panic, you only made the fire worse as you slowly set alight to ALL the decorations. Soon, half the village square was up in flames. Villagers started running around screaming, pushing and shoving as they tried to get away. Some of the village children ran up towards you before they spotted the flames coming from your hands. “Ah! Monster!” They screamed, running in the opposite direction to you.
Your mother, Pepa, saw the chaos happening. Her eyes narrowed as she saw that you were in the centre of it all. The sky darkened and rain began to pour from the sky, as lightning flashed dangerously and the loud rumble of thunder signified how terribly angry she was with you. “Oh no…” You whispered to yourself, as she came over to you, agonisingly slowly. Luckily, the intense rain was able to douse your flames, including the ones still hovering above your hands.
“Y/N!” A shriek of anger comes from the edge of the village square. You turn to see your Abuela coming towards you, her face in a vicious snarl. “How could you? You’ve destroyed everything your family has worked so hard on today!”
You sniff, tears threatening to fall. “I’m sorry… I didn’t mean to, I couldn’t… control it.” Your chin wobbles, as Abuela yanks your arm to drag you back to Casita. Your family follows behind you, glaring daggers into your back. “I don’t want to hear it, Y/N.” Abuela shakes her head. “You have created absolute chaos, frightened the villages and disappointed your family. You must control your gift, or you cannot go out of Casita into Encanto.”
You gasp in shock, blinking rapidly as the tears mix in with the rain coming from Pepa’s storm. “You’ll lock me away in Casita?” You begin to sob, hugging myself as we trudge up the steps to Casita. As soon as you all get inside, you run up the stairs and run into your room, slamming the door. You flop onto your bed, staring up at the ceiling. It feels like your heart will break.
The door slowly creaked open, and your eyes land on your Uncle Bruno as he slinks into the room. “Y/N, let’s… have a talk.” You sit up, wiping your tears, as you sit cross-legged on your bed. Bruno sits beside you, a hand resting on your shoulder. “I know what it is like. To have a gift that causes fear in other people.” He says, as you look up at him, listening intently.
“People have a tendency to be… afraid of what they don’t understand. Now, you and I… we both have powerful gifts. Capable of great things… but also capable of causing a lot of damage.” You look down, sniffling, as you hug your pillow. “They see that power, and they are afraid. They don’t take the time to understand it.” Bruno adds, sighing as he looks down at you. “I know it seems tough right now, that no one will be able to see who you are, past the big scary fire…”
“They are so frightened of me… but it isn’t my fault, I can’t control it!”
“You will, with time. And when you can, they will love you for your gift. I think it is pretty neat, honestly.” Your face lights up. “Really?”
“Well, for a start, you can create a bonfire any time you want, and then we can toast marshmallows. Or when it is super dark, and you can just flick your hand and light us a torch? Yeah… your gift is awesome.” His words make you smile for the first time, the candles in your room start to burn a bit brighter.
“You keep your chin up, kiddo. Don’t listen to the others… listen to your Uncle Bruno.” You smile, feeling the room become warmer from the heat of your flames again.
“Thanks, Tío.”

Chismoso -P.G8
Summary: Your boyfriend loves some good gossip

You smiled at your phone watching a girl do a prank on her boyfriend in Tiktok where she pretended to be on the phone with her friends with some "gossip" and her boyfriend was trying to listen to it.
Pedri, your almost three years boyfriend, loved any kind of gossip and whilst you delivered to them nicely to rant about your day or get off any anger, he got his dose of gossip and helped you with your problems.
You loved it tho. It was nice the fact, you were lovers and at the same time the best of friends, trusting everything you have and own into the others arms.
"Amor, estás lista?" (Babe, you ready?)
You smirked. You definitely were going to do this one.
"Si!" You replied grabbing the tray with your food. You pushed your phone in between your shoulder and chin and walked towards your living room. "Help me, please?"
"Hostias preciosa, you could have told me you'd need the help" You shook your head smiling softly
"I had it done until now" It was his turn to shake his head with a smile on
"Who is it?" He asked whispering noticing you were in the phone
"Alexia, she's been texting me non-stop today, she told me she'd call me for something, don't know what it is tho" You replied in the same way
"Baby, it's starting" Pedro pouted as you kissed his plump lips repeatedly
"You can watch it while I'm on the phone, it'll be quick, hopefully"
"No, I'll just pause it. I don't wanna watch it alone"
"It'll be just for a few minutes"
"Venga, bonita" You never resisted his big brown beautiful eyes and that little nickname of his
"Stay quiet" He nods sitting on the couch and you taking a seat next to him, he was the one who pulled you closer by the legs to him "Yes, I'm listening" You said before humming a few times
"Ay joder" You said furrowing your eyebrows as Pedri looked at you "And like she never stops having a few problems with Cynthia..." You made up sighing before shaking your head "That's bullshit"
"Gossip?" He mouths as you nod "Oh, I wanna know that. Put it on speaker" You shook your head <no> "Why not?" He asks but you shook your head "Wanna hear some good gossip" You smiled shaking your head and did a demand with your hand for later "No" He whined, you shushed him up "Want it now" He whispered pushing himself onto you "C'mon, let me hear" You started giggling "Stop laughing, focus on the gossip so you can tell me the details of it"
And with that you bursted in laughter.
"Oh my god!" You said throwing yourself at Pedri who was confused "Oye, no seas tan chismoso!" (Hey, don't be such a gossipmonger)
"I'm not a gossipmonger, I'm just interested in everything you do, speak to or look at, 'cus you're my girl" He tries to defend himself as you shake your head shaking your hand as well
"You're a chismoso" You said in laughter as Pedri smiles
"Chica, the call" He said after a few seconds as you show him your blocked phone
"There's no call, mi niño. I'm pranking you and realizing I have the biggest gossip for Fer and your parents once they came back next week"
"No! They'll be going at it for the rest of our lives!" You laughed as Pedri went ahead and hugged himself into your chest
"I'm preparing everything then" You smiled
"So, it was a prank?" You nod humming once you both calmed down "So there's no gossip? Joder" He lamented and you laughed again, this time Pedri joining too as you leaned down and kissed his lips
"Ay 'jueputa. Mi niño lindo y chismoso" (My pretty and gossipmonger boy) You both laughed, you felt Pedri leave a kiss in your cleavage
"Sólo un poquito" (Just a little bit)

Does Alma Approve Part 2;

Mateo Foulfellow: Alma doesn't approve of Mateo for the longest of times because the boy is a self-admitted con artist and it worried her.
But as she got to know him, he grew on her and she realized that he wasn't just trying to con his way into the family for some reason.
She realized that Mateo was just a young man doing what he'd been taught to do to survive and that he genuinely cared for Glenn—it also helped that both Glenn and Mateo have a lot in common.
They're both quiet and loyal to a fault. Both of them are playful. They're both in the same crew.
Mateo will stand up for Glenn when Mason is being too pushy. He stops Glenn from doing anything too reckless.
He's done so much for Glenn and for the family, and has shown time and time again that he cares for them all.
She approves eventually. But it takes a long time. But Mateo being himself ensures that she will before her time has come.
Orlie Marsh of Morva: Alma doesn’t approve of Orlie for a year.
The girl just doesn't seem to care about anything at first.
She's too evenly matched with Mason—she’s aggressive. She seems to be apathetic to everything. She gets into mischief with him and they're both just so stubborn that it gives her a headache.
Orlie can out-snark Mason.
It's tiring.
But eventually Alma catches onto the fact that Orlie does care and that she cares a lot.
She cares about the trees, the plants, and everything that Isabela grows and the things that grow on her own. Orlie cares about the spirits that have passed on, the lives they led, and she cares about the stares.
But most importantly, she genuinely cares about Mason and helping him be the best and happiest him he can be.
And she's succeeding far better than anyone else who has ever tried to.
Which is why Alma approves of her at the end of the day (or year).
Manu Batson of the Isle: Alma wasn't sure that Manu was a good match for Rory at first.
Manu is loud, impatient, reckless, chaotic, and messy.
Rory is shy, skittish, quiet, gentle, and naive.
Manu is a student at Serpent Prep and a part of a pirate crew as well as three different clubs and a school team while Rory is a student at Auradon Prep and too shy, awkward, and cautious to even try to take part in such things.
It doesn't help that Rory was rather intimidated by the boy at first (intimidated, crushing too hard to speak. Details, details).
So she didn't necessarily approve of Manu or their relationship at first: but that was before she saw the positive effect the isle kid had on her grandson. That was before she saw how Manu helped her youngest grandson come out of his shell without pushing him too hard or too quickly. Saw how he brought the best out in Rory and got him to mingle with others without too much fear.
After seeing Rory willing to go out to a party when before the very idea had him running to hide behind Bruno, how could Alma not approve of Manu?
How could Alma not approve of the g.f when he made her grandson laugh and smile the same way Félix made Pepa? How could her worries not be put at ease after seeing Rory seriously think about and contemplate joining a club?
Manu makes her grandson feel braver and makes him smile more often, and helps him feel less isolated—and that is enough for them to win Alma's approval in the first two months of the two of them dating.
Piper Neverscales: Alma liked Piper from the beginning.
She's shy, creative, truthful, a bit of a scaredy cat, stubborn, and brave when it counts. Absolutely perfect for the sneaky, self-sacrificing, brave, strong-willed, and detrimentally curious/nosey to an alarming agree Ligera Guzmán Madrigal.
The two of them get along with one another like peanut butter and jelly.
They were friends for a while before they started dating and Piper has always been good at getting Ligera to sit down and think before she does something reckless that she can't take back. Something that could get her killed or in serious trouble.
Alma approves of Piper, even if the fact she lives in Neverland—a place where children rarely grow up—scares her.
Nabila Heartfang of Kumandra: Alma, against popular belief, approves of Nabila.
The girl is hardworking, determined, adventurous, adaptable, loyal, friendly, open-minded, trusting, and perspective—and she brings the shy, quiet, cautious, sensitive, timid, and socially awkward Hugo out of his shell.
But she doesn't push him to the breaking point. She just encourages him and helps him have fun, relax, and let loose.
The two of them can happily talk about wildlife preservation and animals for hours without getting bored. They never fight too badly and Alma has never seen Hugo smile like that before.
So of course Alma approves of and downright adores little Nabila.
Henrique Eligio de la Cruz: Alma does not approve of Ernesto de la Cruz’s son dating her great granddaughter.
Not after what the man had done to Miguel's grandfather—her great granddaughter’s great great grandfather.
She doesn't trust him for a second.
He's snarky, bitter, and doesn't seem to have many friends from the Isle despite being charismatic. He gets defensive when his father is brought up and doesn't talk about him often, and glares at anyone who brings the man up.
He disrespects his elders and rolls his eyes often. He's the most musically un-inclined person Alma has ever met and she just finds him rude.
Alma doesn't see what the wildly curious, gentle, courteous, creative, imaginative, playful, loving, graceful, and well-mannered Mariana could see in him.
(The answer, of course, is a kindred spirit. They're both fairly lonely children after all).
It takes a year for her to approve of him and she only fully does after seeing him interact with his father when Henrique wasn't even aware she was around.
Hearing the boy venomously spit “At least I didn't have to kill my best friend and steal his talent to make a name for myself!” in his father's face killed any worries the Matriarch had about the boy turning out to be another Ernesto.
Gronosis Ceinfarfog of Camelot: Alma approved of Gronosis from the moment she met him.
He was a ‘cutie pie’ as Dolores would put it.
Sure, the boy is mischievous, reckless, breezy, intense, easily excitable, and energetically boyish but he was also adaptable, clever, approachable, friendly, considerate, creative, charismatic, and mature when it's required of him—which made him absolutely perfect for Mirabel's little Marisol. Mirabel's intense, solemn, paranoid, moody, clever, creative, impatient, and graceful little Marisol.
It probably also helps that Gronosis was Marisol’s friend first, so Alma doesn't have to worry about this somehow being some horribly cruel prank like she would if someone who wasn't Marisol's friend of many years suddenly showed romantic interest in her.
Gronosis had proved himself time and time again to the family by standing by Marisol when she needed him most even before they started dating—and he wasn't afraid of arguing with her when Marisol was clearly in the wrong and wasn't afraid to admit when he himself was wrong like Pedro would have. How could Alma not approve of the boy when he challenges her great granddaughter to be her best self?
Tapeesa Berenstain: Alma likes Tapeesa Berenstain well enough—how can she not when the girl is so graceful, charismatic, brave, loyal, helpful, and adaptable?—but she can't help but be wary.
After all, the girl is just as playful and adrenaline seeking as Leta is and the brunette doesn't really need anymore encouragement to pull these death defying reckless stunts that make the families’ hearts stop.
But she doesn't necessarily disapprove of Tapeesa.
The girl makes her granddaughter happy after all: even if they're being impulsive and getting into trouble with one another, and giving her grayer-gray hairs.
Alma just isn't sure if she fully approves of her (but she will eventually, after Tapeesa saves her Leta’s life by stopping her from doing a stunt that certainly would have killed her).
Princess Solana Castillo Flores-Núñez of Avalor: Alma approved of Solana fully by their third meeting.
The girl is hardworking, observant, creative, gentle, caring, and tolerant of others—perfect for a boy like Marcelo who needs someone that will support him and his more out there baking ventures and encourage his creativity.
That’s not even mentioning how utterly brilliant Solana is or how she won’t even hesitate to verbally eviscerate anyone who messes with Marcelo or any of their little friends.
Alma loves how the girl is interested in everything in the Encanto, how kind and strong hearted she is, and how absolutely resilient the girl seems to be. Loves how she makes Marcelo laugh and how carefree the two of them are around each other—just how could Alma not approve of the girl?
Aroha of Motunui: Alma approves of Aroha.
He’s sweet, patient, hardworking, brainy, loyal, family oriented, self restrained, mature when it's required of him, and all about fair play—he’s able to get Silvia to let loose, relax, and release any pent up tension she may or may not be holding within her.
He makes Silvia happy. Encourages her to follow her dreams and is one of the few people who can successfully convince Silvia to take a break.
Aroha can make Silvia laugh and he loves her. She loves him and talks about him the way Alma used to talk about Pedro—it’s wonderful and everything that Alma could have wished for one of her descendants to have. Of course she approves.
Ace Spade McCard of Wonderland: Alma ultimately approves of Ace McCard of Wonderland .
He’s a good kid. Quick-witted, hardworking, observant, helpful, and loyal to fault—not to mention more than willing to stand up to corrupted officials if the stories Luis told her about another timeline where the boy was turned into a card soldier are true. Not to mention Luis is absolutely infatuated with the other boy.
But Alma can’t help but be wary.
Ace is mischievous and plays by Wonderland rules. There’s nothing wrong with that but Alma still can’t help but worry about him getting into trouble or Luis getting hurt. It’s an abuela’s job to worry after all.
Chester Clarence Catty-Cheshire of Wonderland: Alma approves of Chester Catty-Cheshire of Wonderland but like with Ace, she can’t help but be wary.
Chester is curious, chatty, compassionate, helpful, and witty and can keep up with José’s antics without breaking a sweat. He makes José and their girlfriend, Vania, happy & she has never heard a single complaint about him from Vania or José—but Chester is also mischievous. Impulsive.
He’s hyperactive, nosey, and can’t lie to save his life. He’s from Wonderland and plays by Wonderland logic—always appearing where he shouldn’t be and talking what sounds like nonsense to people unfamiliar with the land in which he hails.
The boy is sweet and loving and is always having fun with José and Vania but his mischievous qualities and his fate in the universe Luis told Alma about—him being turned into a cat because he was standing up to a tyrant by throwing a party—it scares Alma. The possibility of him dragging Vania and José into trouble unintentionally is too real.
The fact he and Ace are detective proteges doesn’t ease Alma’s worry in the slightest.
But again, ultimately, she approves of the boy. He makes her great grandson and their girlfriend happy and would never intentionally
Trixie Earwicket of Wonderland: Alma was concerned at first when Maisey, her most vulnerable grandchild and the one she’s had for the least amount of time, started to show interest in Trixie.
Maisey is a shy, anxious, clingy, and fearful young lady who has trouble socializing with others due to the fact that she was kept in isolation for the first eight years of her life even to this day. She’s conflict avoidant and flinches on instinct, and regulates herself to the background whenever an argument breaks out—she’s quiet.
Trixie is shy, reserved, anxious, and clingy as well.
Both tend to overthink things.
Trixie is also loud and impulsive and impatient.
Alma feared that the two wouldn’t be good for one another.
But eventually, Alma does approve, because the two of them, while seemingly even-matched at first, do have opposing traits that help one another.
Maisey is intelligent for her age and knowledgeable about a patchwork of different topics, despite being kept out of school till she was eight. Which means she’s able to help Trixie with her homework when the other girl is struggling.
Trixie, on the other hand, is able to bring Maisey out of her shell and make friends. She makes Alma’s granddaughter smile and laugh, and stray from the Family’s side when it’s necessary.
The two girls are good for one another even if their clinginess isn't always healthy—but thankfully, this is something they're slowly overcoming.
hurt them: that’s what’s most important.
Vania of Motunui: Alma approves of Vania almost immediately.
She’s independent, strong-willed, determined, resourceful, thoughtful, mature, observant, gentle, diligent, organized, and good at multitasking. A good girl who can set José straight or at the very least make sure he doesn’t get up to too much trouble when he, Chester, and her get into mischief.
Vania is kind and sweet, and Alma adores her—would despair if things between her, Chester, and José didn’t work out (that was something she was worried about at first but Vania can’t lie for the life of her and it didn’t take Alma long to realize she was just as mischievous as the other two were).
Vania gets the seal of approval. No questions asked.
Kamalani of Maui’s Island: Kamalani has Alma’s stamp of approval.
He’s cool, calm, collected, easygoing, patient, quiet, friendly, level headed and mature when it counts as well as generous, humble, mindful, and rational. He’s hardworking and curious and can always get a laugh or smile out of Vera.
That enough would have won Kamalani Alma’s approval.
But Kamalani is also confrontational when needed and more than willing to stand up for himself as well as others when no one else is willing to say anything. He smacks people’s hands away from Vera’s wings when they grab them without permission: he gets in-between people who try to get violent with José and the other unpopular Madrigals. He does the same for his friends and even people he doesn’t know.
Kamalani is a good young man and has done more than enough to win Alma’s approval even though he barely even tried to.
Gloria Borbón: Alma approves of Gloria.
She doesn’t believe that anyone else would be better for Avila than Gloria, honestly.
The two of them are similar personality wise and they have similar interests. They’re both sweet, mischievous, blunt, weird little girls who are like two peas in a pod—and it helps that Gloria gets along well with Avila’s siblings and cousins as well.
Gloria is a reserved, realistic, persistent, honest, passive, hardworking, and smart young lady from the Encanto who spends a lot of time at Casita watching makeup artist videos on Auratube. Specifically horror make-up artists.
Even though Gloria is squeamish and cannot keep the disgust off her face when she watches the videos.
So Alma approves of her.
Especially given how happy she makes Avila (if there’s someone Alma wants happy, it’s Isabela’s kids. Alma will never forgive herself for the misery Isabela put up with when she tried to set her and Mariano up, and she’s sworn to herself and Pedro’s spirit that she will never make any of her descendants that miserable ever again. She loves them and wants the best for them).
Luz Birdwell-Pepikrankenitz of the Kuzcovoan Empire: Alma approves of Luz.
Sure, the girl is messy and what some may call ill-mannered but she’s also helpful, loyal, confident, courageous, dedicated, curious, creative, crafty, and charming—and she’s a girl scout who’s more than willing to stand up for what she believes in.
She can keep up with Renata and has no problem jumping into whatever mess the other girl usually finds herself in. Not to mention she makes Renata happy.
So Alma approves of the little girl and though she’d never say it, she finds her charming. (she reminds Alma of herself when she was a child).
Lucero Guadalupe Alcaraz Sánchez: Alma approves of Lucero, though reluctantly.
They’re surprisingly gentle, funny, daring, free thinking, friendly, boyish, adventurous, ambitious, and hearty—but they're also a huge troublemaker. Abrasive, impulsive, loud, and an absolute hyperactive wild child who's usually oblivious to his surroundings: which usually leads to him stumbling into chaos.
But they're gentle with Giovanni and his animals, and when they were little, they never broke any of Giovanni’s toys. Accidentally or purposely.
They don't complain too much when getting dragged into Giovanni's adventures and can be just as determined about said adventures as Alma's great grandson.
They seem to always know what Giovanni is thinking and vice versa.
And Alma can tell that Lucero genuinely cares about Giovanni, so she approves despite her reservations.
Tasi of Motunui: Alma approved of Tasi before she even met him in person.
Amada is an excellent judge of character and wouldn’t date just anybody.
Tasi is also Vania’s younger brother and Moana’s son: Moana is a friend of Mirabel and is an excellent young woman and a wonderful mother.
There was no doubt in Alma’s mind that Tasi would be an excellent partner for Amada.
And then she met him and realized that he was absolutely adorable, kind hearted, and unapologetically authentic.
She will find a way to incorporate Tasi (and Vania, for that matter) into the family if things don’t end up working out for Amada and Tasi: that’s just how much approval he has from Alma.
Rowan Rossí: Alma approves of Rowan within six months of him and Javier dating despite her reservations.
The reservations in question being her worries about Javier wanting to follow Rowan around the world on his adventures, and never returning to the Encanto because Rowan is exactly shy about the fact he doesn't enjoy living in Neverland despite growing up there.
Eventually those worries cease (neither Javier nor Rowan would ever stay permanently apart from their families, after all).
And eventually Alma approves of Rowan fully.
She approves so much in fact that she literally dies seven months into Rowan and Javier's relationship (as she told Casita she would).

the fool and the sun!!
The Fool: Describe the first meeting between Rook and their love interest. What was Rook thinking in that moment? Was it an instant attraction?
Ironically when Ellis (who does prefer to go by Rook) and Lace first met they HATED eachother. Those first three days were hell, mostly for Verric. Rook was so caught up in being kicked out of the lords of fortune that they took out all their anger onto Lace. She misgendered them once, poor girl didn't know what non-binary even was at that point.
Ellis was originally a slave for the venatori, rescued by Isabela when they were seventeen and trained to be a warrior for the lords so when they discovered a rivaini noble was going to give a powerful artifact to the cult, they couldn't just sit back. Which is why Isabela kicking them out of Rivain to go with Harding and Verric stung so much.
Three days after joining the two, they had a breakdown. It was bad. And to their shock, Harding had been the one to talk them down. After that the two were close as Rook was constantly trying to make up for how they had treated Lace those first three days.
The Sun: What is something Rook’s partner does that gives them that warm fuzzy feeling?
First and foremost, her giggle. Gives them butterflies everytime they hear it. Other than that, they actually enjoy watching Lace cook. They don't enjoy what she makes (all though I like to think her sandwiches are actually fairly decent it's cooking and baking where everything turns to chaos) but she always seems happy when she's making something. Rook will of course grin and bare it when she presents them a monstrosity on a plate because regardless of taste they know she made it with love.

Another DAtober fill! This one mysteries. I took some liberties with this word but when inspiration hit, I ran with it! XD This is post DA2 with the Kirkwall Gang.
Varric smiles as he shuffles the cards, he’s on a hot streak and there’s no end in sight. Sure, there was one game he almost lost to Fenris but one little extra card coming from his sleeve made all the difference and no one but Isabela seemed to notice. She gives him a look but doesn’t say anything.
He’s glad that despite everything that’s happened, they can still get together like this. They’re allowed to just be friends, just be people, despite the entire world going to shit. The only one missing from the table is Hawke.
“Speak of the devil,” he murmurs under his breath as Hawke walks into the suite. He’s holding a huge box on his shoulder. “Hawke! Pull up a seat!”
“You’ve got some explaining to do,” Hawke says in response, tossing the box onto the table and tipping it over. An obscene amount of books spills all over the table, completely shutting down their game.
“Hey! I was going to win this round!” Isabela says with a pout.
“Dream on, Riviani,” Varric says in response before freezing, finally getting a glance at the books.
“What are all these, Hawke?” Anders asks, picking up one of the books and flipping through it.
“By the Maker,” someone says but Varric isn’t paying attention, too busy watching Hawke’s expression. Is he mad? Is he upset? Did Varric totally fuck up?
“Varric,” Hawke says softly, his eyes meeting Varric’s. “Explain what’s going on.”
“You inspired my next novel,” he says slowly. “And as always, it’s embellished so it can’t be tracked back to you.”
“Right,” Hawke says, grabbing the book from Anders’ hands. “This one says Anders and I were romantically involved but then when the Chanty blew sky high, I fucking murdered him! What the hell?”
“Wow, that sucks,” Anders says, grabbing the book back.
“That one,” he says, pointing at a different one, “says I’m a woman and that I’m straight with Sebastian!” Then he picks up another. “This one says I’m a blood mage and dating Merril! And that one says I’m in an enemies to lovers romance with Fenris? Some of them have me supporting the mages, others I’m a warrior, another I’m a Templar lover!”
Bethany gasps. “This one says I died?”
Varric looks around at his friends. Yes, he lied. He lied through his teeth to keep them all safe. Could he really go around telling anyone who read his books that the Hawke twins lived? That Riviani and Daisy are a couple? Or the real enemies to lovers was the renegade apostate and the escaped slave? People can’t know this, damn it!
“Why are you actually mad?”
Hawke deflates. “None of them have our real love story,” he says softly with a pout.
“Oh, come here,” Varric breathes, holding out his arms for Hawke. Hawke slides onto Varric’s lap and steals a kiss. The rest of the night is filled with them all reading a version of the book and comparing notes.

I cannot stop thinking about I Saw the TV Glow.
How Isabel can only imagine themself as strong and able and be proud of themself when they're projecting onto the characters of the Pink Opaque.
I've always felt scared to accomplish anything significant pre-transition because I've felt like its not gonna be remembered as something done by me, but by someone else, a false perception of me, like I'm watching a separate character on TV do everything that I do while pretending to be me, almost kind of like an inverse of Isabela and the Pink Opaque. I've always projected onto fiction as a way to pretend like I could accomplish something and be proud of how I'm recognized for it, how characters unabashedly express themselves and how their selves are directly linked to their actions.
But then Isabel is still so used to having this shame attached to them that they're afraid of changing, that they won't live up to the image of the person they truly are. It's humiliating to even try. They've convinced themself that they just need to get into this unfamiliar character more and eventually it will become their life, their family.

Lay all your love on me
Mariano didn't really love the one her was betrothed for. But the idea of upsetting his family was just too much
@encantober-official prompt - Poetry
AHHH ITS HERE ITS TIME
Looking back, his relationship with Isabela were always stiff. Mariano was a huge romantic, dreaming about someone to cradle in his arm and swoop off their feet. Someone elegant and gracious. But it was never like this around her. As much as Isabela was beautiful and majestic. It never felt real. Mariano wasn't even attracted to her to begin with. There was someone else he loved. But he got nervous. Made a mistake. And then his Mamá was so happy her boy wanted to ask Isabela Madrigal out. Señorita who's skin was delucate and soft like flower petals, who was everyone's dream.
And Isabela agreed. Mariano just... He couldn't break her heart. It wasn't right and he knew it, but he wasn't able to do anything. He wanted Isabela to be happy. And if she loved him, it wouldn't be very gentleman of Mariano to break her heart. So he swallowed his own feelings. His family wanted this marriage, it would bring them a huge honour. And she adored it so much. It... it just was wrong to break her heart. Everyine expected Mariano to marry Isabela, so what could he do?
Sometimes, just for a second, when nobody looked, Isabela woupd flinch. Or her face would lose its graceful smile. For just a second. Before the Madrigal rose returned to who she always was. An elegant angel. Something inside Mariano pinged with guilt. Worried that he accidentally made her uncomfortable. So he pulled away. A gentleman must treat his woman (even if he didn't actually love her) with all respect on the world.
He forced himself to look at Isabela, try to admire her like everyone expected him to. Even if he didn't feel that sparkle within his soul. When their dates feel so stiff that each of them could as well talk to the trees. And probably get way more of an actual conversation from it. It feels awkward. Nothing like the romance in his books. But again, how could he judge? Books always had mutual feelings. And even if Isabela was beautiful, Mariano didn't actually love her this way. But the idea of breaking her heart was so gutwretching. So what if Mariano has to live with soneone he loves, who is the one he longs for. But not being bethoded to her, just watching from the side. So close but out of reach.
When he wrote poetry he desperately tried not to think about whom he loved. But he couldn't help it. And felt so awful. Would it be considered cheating? He didn't want to be a bad husband. Even if he didn't love Isabela romantically, he wanted the best for her. And he wanted to be a decent partner even if she wasn't the one he loved. Mariano would train himself. Create a perfect marriage his family wanted. He was supposed to be an example for his siblings and cousins. This felt like a Shakespeare story, kiving somebody so much but never enough.
Dolores is his everything.
Now, after that engagement was broken, Mariano didn't have to date someone he doesn't have feeling for. And the most ridiculous part of their relationship was that apparently Mariano was wrong about 'Breaking Isabela's heart' As it turned out she agreed to date him for exactly the same reason Mariano dated her. It was family pressure. They laughed so hard when they talked about it, the situation was so ridiculous it didn't feel real. As apparently they were the biggest idiots in the world.
But, with Dolores, Mariano loves her greatly. In burning words that spill onto the paper. He doesn't have to force himself to write for so long his eyes get eyebags. It just flowing naturally. He doesn't have to force himself like it's some chore. Because Mariano in fact wanted to write for Dolores. She filled his heart with such awful joy. Just looking into her eyes made him the happiest man on Earth. It hust feels free. They ran over the town, laighing. Cuddle together. Mariano didn't feel like he had to force himself just to make his family happy. Because this time, he was dating because he was in love. Not wanted to make his family happy, he simply loved Dolores. More than anyone else. She was like a muse. A star that came down from the sky, blindingly bright. So he could whisper his most secretive dreams to her. And turn them alive.
And Dolores loved him back. With a hot heart. Not pretending into awkward dates where either wished for nothing more than escape. But a genuiely happy situation for them both. And now, Mariano hoped it would last forever. They spent every moment like the last in their lives. Every line Mariano wrote Dolores met with a dreamy look in her eyes. Full of adoration and passion to match him.
He could stand in the plaza, reading poetry for hours, and Dolores would look like she was bursting with adoration. She loved every word the paper had whispered. So Mariano couldn't stop. And luckily, one look into his muse's eyes was enough to inspire him. Make him detemined to see those sparkles deep inside again and again. So they would burn bright like stars above their heads.

just spent a very long time working on this ship-meme for rhodes and davrin <3 i swear rhodes actually smiles a lot i just have a favorite photo
also yes that is what i imagine rhodes' bad handwriting to look like. davrin gets the cool font bc i love him <3
some more nuance/explanations/lore under the cut :3
some of the sliders for davrin were based off vibes that i got but i do believe that, overall, the two of them have pretty similar energy
i also guesstimated on davrin's age. lucanis makes the joke that rhodes "keeps davrin young."
they technically already live together in the lighthouse but, come post-canon, they are always together, whether it be traveling or wherever they end up settling down <3
bioware didn't give rook a bed and then expected me to not assume that they sleep with their love interest???? i've started to headcanon that davrhodes slept together before tearstone island but tbh After rhodes being trapped in the fade prison, they go from sleeping in the same bed most nights to every night
rhodes is an octopus in bed and sometimes it is up to the sleep-gods whether or not davrin is the big spoon or little spoon
they're a slow-burn but a slow-burn where they are both aware of the romantic/sexual tension. it's for the monster/monster-hunter bit.
davrin is rhodes' first everything and they took it relatively slow/playful at first but rhodes was very eager to keep, ah, learning things and moving forward <3 (good for davrin)
davrin's libido is only technically higher bc of experience. rhodes, on the other hand, is a quick learner (good for davrin part two)
rhodes isn't a hard tried-and-true jealous type but davrin can rile them up SO easily. like if they're ever at some post-canon fancy event with the inquisition and someone flirts with davrin, they are there IMMEDIATELY to come collect their man SDKJDFKJFDKJ
davrin rebuffs all attempts at flirting from literally anyone who is not rhodes. however. he also finds rhodes' pseudo-jealousy very amusing so he plays into it.
i actually don't think davrin is that jealous but 1) i don't feel like changing my picture this took so long AKJDSKJDFJK and 2) i think he wouldn't be Jealous jealous but if someone was flirting with rhodes, he would be conveniently suddenly next to them <3
i don't think davrin is Hard on the separation anxiety but i think post-tearstone island, he is definitely More anxious about losing rhodes
i look at rhodes and just know that they can't drive
i look at davrin and just know that he has driving gloves
if davrin ever can't find his clothes, he goes to rhodes' room
they will get married at some point and it will be by isabela on a ship (and she gets bragging rights that she married fenhawke AND davrhodes)
(they both plan on proposing and both propose at the same time) (antoine and evka knew that both of them were proposing but thought that it was too perfect to interfere) (they get engaged in the flower meadow in hossberg)
my secret confession is that i love a post-canon settling down with kids plot AKJDSKJDFKJDF and i genuinely try not to shove it onto every single character bc i know it doesn't work for every single character. but i have dabbled with the idea of giving them a daughter a couple years post-canon. it's not confirmed but it's toyed with.
they have double-dates with camris/dorian, electra/alistair, and evka/antoine
(they know and have met hawke/fenris but my hawke becomes a bit more reclusive after everything with varric)
rhodes is very invested in davrin's monster manual + wood carvings and, once davrin finishes his manual, they help him get it professionally bound
i have a vision post-canon of davrin entering a wood-carving contest/showcase a la magnus burnsides from taz balance without the tragedy and winning
rhodes goes with davrin to visit his clan post-canon
they have fun together. like, they love each other and they're devoted, but they also have silly competitions and stupid jokes and love just spending time with each other. they fit very nicely into each other's lives!
rhodes teases that they're heartbroken over assan liking davrin more but their heart melts seeing assan follow davrin everywhere
davrhodes are in love <3

La madre silenciosa au character sheets!!
Btw many of the kids are from other towns as well!! The magic bought them and Dolores together! And Alma, julieta, Agustin, pepa, Felix, Isabela and Luisa are referred as “other family“
First we have Paloma, his family owned a shoe shop in bogota, his dad was abusive to his whole family, especially to him because he acts “girly“. He didn’t like making or fixing shoes, neither did he like the “manly“ activities his father forced him to do. He became a bully to protect himself from anyone, Paloma regrets it a lot though. Paloma hated his life and father very much, his mother never did anything besides watch which made him hate them even more. He realized that he loved baking a lot, at that moment he knew that he wanted to become a baker. When his father found out it wasn’t so pretty, he raged out onto him and in the same day Paloma ran away. A week later he was in the Encanto, that’s when Dolores heard him and took him in! He got adopted at the age of 8, a year later he got his gift and he has been the happiest ever :D it didnt take him a while to get off his habit but he was relaxed after.
Next is Camilo! Since birth he was more of an mama‘s boy, yet pepa didn’t pay much attention to him, only when he needed to get praised. Dolores on the other hand made sure to give him the motherly love he deserved. He didn’t like the feeling of Mariano appearing like an father figure for him, he was angry at Felix for lacking at it, but he adapted Mariano quite fast. He was often grouchy about the fact that his parents don’t care. His gift also made the situation worse but his real family always helped him which got him better though time. He loves to take care of his little siblings and in the same time being an wild teenager!
Ines is a "special" child, well at least for a lot of people. She has albinism, her parents thought she was some kind of evil spirit so they treated her rather badly. Ines got bullied from the neighborhoods because of her condition, the school didn’t accept her in either so she didn’t knew to write, read or properly speak. She really isolated herself from the world getting sick often since she stays in her room 24\7. Dolores heard about her a couple of times, she helped ines to get better at basic stuff, she schooled her and took her in when she was 9! Dolores noticed that ines had major anger issues, so she decided to put her in therapy to help ines, which worked a lot! Maybe she can snap sometimes but she‘s working on it. Also she dye‘s her hair because she doesn’t like the white color, she gets reminded often how pretty her hair is but she still won’t like it.
Finally mirabel! She is still giftless in this au, the other family still acts as if she were a curse (besides Luisa). Mirabel obviously tries not to think much of her being giftless even if she is reminded every day. Her parents maybe cared for her more than camilo‘s did but they stopped caring when she didnt get a gift, always making the same excuse “im busy“ Dolores knew mirabel didn’t deserve to get treated like that just because of her gift so she did the caring! Mirabel learned a lot of stuff trough her family, but what she loved to learn the most was the sewing skills her abuela Fiona’s showed her.
They all became a group, since they were raised together and been trough a lot together, their age made them closer too!!
Xavier had a pretty rough life, his mother died at birth and his father hated him for it. His father always looked him up into tight and dark spaces because he didn’t want to see him. Dolores reported him for some crimes he did, just so she could take Xavier in, he was 6 when he got adopted. Xavier was a bit shy at first but he grew to be a very brave boy! He looked up to Mariano a lot and practically did everything he did because he thought that if he did anything wrong he was gonna be put in a tight space again but they made sure to help him with his habit, now he is just wild!! Basically being himself.
Juan is Xavier’s best friend!! Which he is really greatful for since Juan never really had friends. He came from a wealthy family in bogota, he didnt like being wealthy because he got bullied a lot for it. It would get so bad that he often needed to be hospitalized. Because he is from a wealthy family his family doesnt accept him either, they ignore him, dont take care of him and neither do they try to stop his bullying. Like Paloma he ran away out of anger just that this time when he fell asleep in the woods, he woke up the next day in a cozy bed instead of his old cold one. It took him some time to adjust with the people in town, especially the older ones. Juan ran away when he was 8, and he first got his gift 3 years later because the miracle felt the anxiety in him, however he now lives carefree and safe!
Andres had a traumatic past, his blond hair and blue eyes made him get praised by a lot of people which made his parents realize the fame. Andres‘s mother was by far more obsessed with fame so she ofc did everything so people would notice him. They forced him to do stuff just so he would get praised and famed over, if he ddi something wrong he would get punished. When he was 7 he lashed out and his mother burned him with fire as punishment. That happened at night so Dolores got woken by screams, she got his parents arrested and took him in. Andres still tends to avoid a lot of stuff but it is noticeable how he is working on getting better!!
Luz is a bright girl!! Now her mom cared for her however she didnt take care of herself. Her mom always argued with her dad since he was somewhat abusive, at the end she divorced him because she found out he was having an affair. Life was hard after that, luz had to take care of both her mom and herself but after a year her mom took her own life, needless to say it wasn’t a pretty view. She got adopted by Dolores at 5, sometimes Luz has panic attacks because of the trauma so she regularly goes to therapy too. She‘s getting way better! Luz looks up to Isabela often because it seems like she and her mom don’t only look alike but also have a lot in common.
As you can guess Marcia isn’t liked because of her eyes, some of them find it freaky or weird. She actually had a quite big family but they hated her for being different so they tried to get rid of her. (Iykyk) Marcia was extremely traumatized by it, Dolores scolded the entire family including arresting the older ones, needles to say she wasn’t so happy about what she heard. Marcia isolated herself for 6 months after, her family were with her the entire time to help her. The passing months she was getting better and Marcia started to open up. Now she’s happily learning how to write!! Dolores adopted her at 5 years old, kinda sad she was this young.
Lyla had good guardians, her grandparents took care of her till they died, which was when she was 4, after that her parents took her in and since they were young they didnt attend to take care of her. Dolores was already good friends with her grandparents, they knew that her parents wouldn’t take care of her so they asked Dolores to do it. Dolores talked with her parents and adopted lyla!! Layla basically already grew up in the casita so she is pretty used to everything, yet she does need help if it comes to the stairs.
Carlos was actually a homeless boy, his parents left him on the streets when he was 3 and he was on the streets for 3 years till dolores found him. He got picked on a lot and he was skinny which made him insecure too. When Dolores found him he was barely holding on, so he got spoiled a lot ofc!! They helped him with school which he didnt like learning at first, but later on found out he could read comic‘s with it. Plus he became very confident too!!
Esteban has divorced parents, both of them absolutely HATE eachother so they make him their weapon. Every once a week he has to visit the other parent and before he goes the parents tells him to do this or to do that. Esteban doesnt want to do it, he doesnt like it, he feels guilty about it but he knows the punishments. Both of his parents were arrested for the crimes they did (i wonder who reported them) dolores adopted him when he was 8!! Esteban got nothing but just affection from his new family, he loves them very deeply and feels safe with them than he ever has.
The triplets had it very rough, they were selled by their own parents. The ones that bought them treated them very bad, they experimented on them, hurt them for fun and did a lot of other bad stuff. They escaped the place and hid in casita. Dolores found them and adopted them! It took them the longest out of the children to get used to a normal life, but now they are pretty comfortable with their new family! She found them when they were 5, pretty young, sometimes they still struggle a lot.
Leandra‘s dad is pretty troublesome. He always gets in trouble with some kind of bad gang‘s, as you call it. These things get both his dad and himself in danger, he hates not feeling safe the entire time. When he was 6 his dad caused a big thing with a gang, they cornered him and Leandra was with him at that time. In order to survive he told them that they could take Leandra, they then took Leandra and left him alone. The people hurt him for fun throughout a half year, Mariano say them doing stuff to him one day and it didnt end well for them. Mariano saved leandra from the trouble and since that day he has major trust issues, hes grumpy most of the times however he still can be soft :)
Esmeralda was abandoned by her mother when she was 2, she just left her in the forest. Months went by and Dolores started to hear noises in the forest at some points. When she decided to check it out she saw a little toddler, Dolores ofc adopted her. Esmeralda didn't have many problems besides some, she had and still has problems with communication. Speaking for her can be difficult, that's why her family makes sure to always give her a rest when they talk with her. She may looks like she would creep someone out, but she's harmless and would never think of hurting anyone :D
Olivia‘s parents were not stable, they always took some shit. She sometimes ended up in the orphanage because they got arrested. Her parents are abusive and alway aggressive, they never care for her or her brother, so most of the time she has to take care of both of them which can be exhausting. Dolores arrested her parents and took both of them in. Olivia was really happy to have new parents, she got used to Mariano and Dolores really quickly because they were so comforting. She was also happy that her brother was treated well in others care, she finally could be a normal kid!
Rosa has a big family, she has 3 big siblings who moved out of her house when she was young, they didn't treat her well, especially her older sister. They left her out and bullied her often, Isabela reminds her of her big sister a lot and that’s why she hates Isabela a lot. Not only that but they both look and act alike which makes her hatred towards Isabela even more. Her parents weren’t good people either, they too treated her like an outcast and made her do all the chores in the house. They made fun of her too till Dolores got them arrested for a reason. Rosa really looks up to Dolores as her savior, she can finally just be herself without anyone judging her.
Rafeala‘s parents were young when they had him and that’s why they gave him to his grandmother. His grandmother HATES him for making her daughter's life miserable. Rafaela was treated very badly by her, when he was 5 she hurt him so badly he got a major concussion. That concussion damaged his brain really badly which made him forget to do a lot of stuff and a lot of memories. Dolores wasn’t so happy about the news and that woman did not end in jail without breaking some bones. However the injuries didn't stop him from being a very positive child!! He’s happy with his new family!! Sometimes he is scared of Alma because of his memories.
Antonio was in dolore‘s care since the moment he was born, pepa did not want to raise another child. (As if she raised her others) Antonio knows that Dolores and Mariano aren't his real parents but that won't stop him from loving them as if they were his parents which they technically are. He hates his other family for hurting his family, the only person he would still talk to would be Luisa since she is actually nice and would be there for him. He didn't have much problems with his family next to him even so sometimes he still has a lot of anxiety because of his expectations of being the next “hope of the miracle“. His family will make sure though whatever will happen that they will always stay with him.
Cecilia has some troublesome parents, they caused trouble and blamed her for it. She didn't like being blamed for everything they did. Not only that but they were heavy alcoholic‘s too. Sometimes they would force her to buy it for them, she hated the feeling, she hated it all. She isolated herself a lot, Dolores finally got her parents arrested last year and since then she has been the happiest. No more getting blamed at, no more of the smell of alcohol and no more hurting. She loves her family and loves to be with her friends everyday.
Alejandra has divorced parents, she never really sees her dad and is around her mom the entire time. Her mom brings a man over sometimes and if they are really drunk they start to criticize her, calling her bad names or just making fun of her in general. She hates being made fun of so she goes to her abuela Fiona’s house a lot since it's near. After some time Dolores adopted her, now she feels safe in her own home. She doesn't need to be scared of anyone criticizing her ever again and she loves the feeling of being free of those bad words.
Juancho was also one of Mariano’s neighbors. He practically grew up in Mariano’s home since his parents didn’t give a shit about him, like they wouldn’t care if he just went missing, nor would they even care if he had died. They didn't want children and acted aggressive towards him often, Juancho didn't like them even one bit. Mariano often hung around him because he knew how they acted with him, in the end he adopted him and Juancho was more than happy. Juancho did have a coffee problem because once he saw the coffee he pretty much got addicted, they are working on it though.
They all got matching bracelets after seeing the older ones having one too.
Patricia is Frisco's and Vicenta’s step sibling. Their mom cheated on multiple men and in the end she married one, aka patrcia‘s dad. They got treated pretty bad, they were forced to do all the housework, if they didn't they got punishments. Dolores adopted them last year when they were 4, she actually fought to adopt them earlier but the police often refused, in the end she finally adopted them. They were fearful at first but then got comfortable with their new family, they are relaxed and don't have to worry about punishments anymore.
Yoga was treated badly because of his skin condition, his family made him feel like a mistake, like he didn’t deserve to be alive. Luckily he was the neighbor of Fiona, he always ran to her after they did something, sometimes he would stay with her some days and sometimes he would stay at Dolores’s. He hated being treated badly just because of his condition. Fiona ranted the parents out and Dolores ended up adopting him. For some reason he liked the julieta‘s outfit a lot, it made him feel calm just by seeing it so they made sure to make him something similar in which he ofc feels safe.
Diego was the oldest and first one Dolores adopted. (Besides Camilo and Mirabel) His father didn't treat him well, he made Diego work a lot. His uncle‘s side of the family wasn’t good either, they too treated him badly. Diego was confused most of the time, yet he was also angry. Sometimes his father would kick him out and then take him back in, but one day when Diego was 9 he ran away, he didnt wanna work anymore, he didnt wanna get hurt or bad-mouthed anymore. Dolores found him in the forest and took him in, he looked up to her a lot since that day. Now he is rested, no more work and no more bad words, plus he loves being a big brother.
Bronco‘s parents only used him and his sister for good reputation. They didn‘t want children but they saw how much people with children get praised so they decided to have 2 children for good reputation only. When they weren’t getting praised they were left alone unattended somewhere, Dolores always has to go to their garden so they won't hurt themselves accidentally. When Bronco was 2 he set the house on fire without knowing, the house burned down but Dolores still got him and his sister out in time. His parents didn’t survive, but bronco didn't care that much since he didn't even really know them. Dolores adopted them and he felt happier to be with her than his parents.
Cruzito‘s parents didn't want him, they noticed how Dolores adopted many children, so they asked Dolores to take him. She was upset how they did not want their own child but she didn't refuse. Dolores adopted cruzito, he grew up happily in a big family with lots of love and spoilering.
Almira’s parents used her for a good reputation like bronco. She didn't like seeing so many bad face‘s, some were making her upset. She didn't like going to the same places and would just end up crying. One day her brother set the house on fire, Dolores saved her but she was really traumatized by it, she cried every time she was put down by Dolores because of the thought of being hurt again, after some time though she felt safe enough to be on the floor and even start to walk herself. Mostly though she likes being picked up rather than walking.
Angela‘s and Amalia's parents weren’t bad people, well at least not their mother. Their mother was good friends with Dolores, but she knew that she couldn’t handle twins at birth since it was risky for her age. She made a promise with Dolores that if she died she wanted her to take care of the twins. And sadly she did die after the birth, Dolores was devastated but kept her promise. Their father divorced their mother when he found out about the pregnancy, he didn't want children and so he left. Dolores makes sure they grow up to be loved.
Victorio is Olivia’s little brother, since birth he has been abused, his parents were nothing but just aggressive towards him. Thankfully he is a calm child most of the time. He is happily now in Dolores’s care, without getting hurt for the rest of his life.
Now we're onto Dolores!! She started to notice Mirabel was neglected by the whole family, even by her own mother. She hated hearing the cries she heard from mirabel after the ceremony, no one also went to comfort her so she took the matters into her own hand and started to take care of her, it wasn’t a long time till she started to take care of Camilo too. After some time she heard a child in the forest, all alone and she couldn’t just leave him there so she took him in. Since that day she started to take more and more care of the children that needed care. But who would take care of Dolores? Well at the time she found that child in the forest she also met a woman in the age of her mother, she built a bond with the woman and started to see her as a mother figure, pepa lost her spark with Dolores a long time ago, since she was 5. She also met her beloved husband through the kids, everything is great…till it isn’t.
Mariano grew up with no parents, his father is unknown and his mother died at birth. His grandma took care of him and he made a promise to never be like his father. He grew up pretty well behaved, he made sure to treat everyone kindly. He started to get a crush on his best friend, Dolores after a while. He has known her since childhood and he also knows that she helps the people in need. He wanted to be by her side, helping the ones in need, but he also wanted to help her too. After a confession, they started to date and then he proposed, they got married and Mariano couldn’t be happier. He loves his family and what he has become. He would never change it the way it is.
Elena Rosa, the grandmother of Mariano had a normal life, she grew up like any other kid, maybe sometimes her life got down, like that time she lost her husband in the escape. She gave birth to a little girl, who later on also died on her grandson‘s birth. She was devastated but she swore to raise him in the way she would’ve. She hates her daughter's husband for abandoning her during the pregnancy. Elena loves Dolores and her family a lot too. She knew that Dolores was just perfect for Mariano, plus she also loves to spoil her great grandchildren. They are everything for her.
Fiona grew up poorly, her family wasn’t the best, so she made sure to cut them out if she ever got married. Which she did, but after he found out that she couldn’t get children he left her and 6 years of her life went to waste on him. She was alone after that, till Dolores came to her life. She treated Dolores like a daughter she couldn’t have before. And in the process Fiona also got a son-in-law plus grandchildren!! She loves spoiling Dolores and her grandchildren, she made sure to make sure they won’t get the same treatment she got. She’s very protective of her family, she will hurt anyone who even dares to looks at them the wrong way.
\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\
Y’all best believe I spend a lot of time of this 😭 I also needed to rewrite most of their lores since tumblr decided to be a pain in the ass 😞 Fiona is just a character I wanted to add since Dolores deserves a mother figure in this au 🥲👍 I really love and enjoy this au a lot!! I think in the future I will start to write too :D!! If any of y’all got something to say or ask so about this au I be very glad to answer or hear about it!!
Also, the children live in a second casita alike house, just that this house is like a magical room. In Dolores’s room, Guzman‘s house and Fiona‘s house is a door connected to casita 2.0. The room is ofc huge, and everyone who chooses to have an own bedroom has one, some share one cuz they don’t like being alone. They have a garden, multiple bathrooms, and everything they need. Since technically the room isn’t connected to the candle like casita is, it still will be there after casita‘s fall!! Just that Dolores room door won’t work anymore till they rebuild casita. 🩵

Andraste’s ass.
After the Seeker left, well informed but deeply dissatisfied with Varric’s answers, all Varric had left was the ruin of the estate and silence.
Hawke’s estate wasn’t used to silence. Even on her worst days, she managed to keep it loud and bustling, bursting with music or laughter or just plain shouting. Whether it was the chaos of the mages taking refuge or the banter of their friends, there was always noise. Yet silent it had been for years. Until now.
Letters scattered on the cold tile. Lamps shattered, desks haphazardly laid ajar, doors thrown open and left agape. Even bottles of wine poured onto the floor in case there was something, anything hidden within them. Cassandra and her men did not spare a single corner.
To bring him here, to interrogate him about her in her own home–
Varric’s fist tightened around a discarded bottle of wine.
Rivain’s purest, the bottle read. The telltale sign Hawke was traveling with Isabela.
How stupid did Cassandra think they were?
Straight from the Anderfels, said the bottle at his feet. Taste of Tevinter, read the bottle shattered a few steps away. Finest from Ferelden, said the bottle in her room upstairs. Did the Seeker really think that Hawke, the Champion of Kirkwall, a woman of lies, of banter and deceit and all things criminal, the woman who had survived in Kirkwall by hiding her identity, would be stupid enough to send Varric letters?
Given that Cassandra had taken everything he had said as fact, Varric didn’t think she was all that bright in the first place. Sure, Hawke had known nothing of Anders’s plan–after all, why wouldn’t she be oblivious to her closest friend’s plans to change the course of history? Everything that had happened to Hawke was an unlucky happenstance; of course she killed the Arishok with pride, of course she had been up and running with a grin immediately after Leandra died, of course she was best buddies with the captain of the guard. Surely none of these could be false.
Meanwhile, if Cassandra had just asked Aveline what she thought of Hawke, she’d be able to provide her with such a long string of synonyms for the word “bitch” that she’d still be talking a week later.
He tilted the bottle in his hand. The simplest code, and the Seeker still couldn’t crack it. Didn’t even consider it. Hawke always knew how to outsmart the public.
Interrogated in her home. It was all such complete bullshit.
If he had just come here a second sooner–
Maker’s breath, the place was empty. So empty.
And now, just like everything else in Hawke’s life, it was tainted by people who thought they were entitled to her life. To come here looking for her as a sign of faith, as if dragging her to continue being the #1 punching bag of the cosmos was a luxury, as if it was an honor. As if all she had fought for was to get yanked back into it against her will by idiots who were just trying to do “the right thing”.
Hawke’s estate was empty. And if the Seeker had her way, it would stay that way forever. Silent. Everything that Hawke never was. And never would be, if Varric had anything to say about it.
But even as he stood in the ruins of her home, clutching a bottle with her essence on it, with the sound of her voice in the dryness of the wine, with a wisp of her hair stuck to the side, he knew he’d never had a say in the matter, and likely never would. Because no matter how many stories he wrote, no matter how many lies he spun, his writing couldn’t change reality, and reality had never been kind to people like Hawke. Hawke especially.
In her own fucking home.
Andraste’s ass.

a few snippets to sum up why i love bouncing dorian off the da2 companions
Merrill fixes Dorian with those huge, innocent eyes and says, “Have you tried asking Hawke if you can climb him?”
Dorian is staggered into silence for exactly three seconds. “I beg your pardon?”
“That’s how I dust my rafters,” Merrill says. “Hawke lets me climb up onto his shoulders. He’s quite tall, you see.”
“At your service,” Hawke says. “Always happy to be climbed.”
*
“Oh, so you’re not broke all of a sudden?” Varric laughs. “Nah, forget it. I’m just hoping when you head back to your rich family in Tevinter, you’ll remember your favourite dwarf back in Kirkwall and do him some favours.”
Dorian scoffs. “You’ve seen the state of me. Just what makes you think I have any clout to offer you?”
“Literally everything about you,” Varric says. “You couldn’t scrub the privilege off you with all the mud in Lowtown.”
“How reassuring,” Dorian says. “Could we get on with it, please? Or is poking fun at me your payment for this favour?”
“There you go,” Varric says as he hops to his feet. “You figured it out.”
*
Aveline sighs, wearily rubbing her brow. “Wonderful. Thank you for that, Dorian.”
“Oh, you’re very welcome,” Dorian says, adding the flourish of a mocking bow. “I would never dream to deprive you of my unsolicited counsel.”
“So I’ve noticed.”
*
“Kindly cease looking at me like that.”
“No way,” Isabela says, now introducing some eyebrow waggling into the look. “Can’t wait to see him again, hmm? Sounds like a certain someone regrets not sleeping with Hawke at the going-away party…”
“You can regret something and still think it was the right choice.”
“Sounds awful.”
“Why, it is awful. You’re very right.”
“And you still stand by it. Have I ever told you that you don’t make any sense?”
“Multiple times,” Dorian says. “But I don’t take criticism from people who can’t seem to remember where their trousers are.”
*

Encantober Day 1 - Sunset
Bruno stepped his bare feet down onto the wood of his bedroom floor. He stood from his bed and padded to the center of the room. The air was thick with salt and brine, filling his nose with the sharp, wet scent. He could taste the saltiness on his tongue. The tide pushed in across the floorboards, the chilling foam washing over his bare feet, thinning as it went until it was just a film across the wood behind him. As the water pulled back, it carried grains of wood with it like sand, and Bruno's heels sank slowly into the floor, leaving him standing just a little deeper than he'd begun. He'd never been to the beach. He'd read about it, but being here was different. The saltiness tasted different than salt tossed into the air, than the rush of dry sand. It all felt thicker, heavier. He used to daydream as a child of visiting the beach, and here he was. How funny that all he had to do this whole time was step out of bed. Ahead of him Mirabel and Antonio splashed and played in the wake, seagulls dipping down to greet them with harsh calls. Deeper in, Luisa and Camilo swam amidst the waves. Antonio was almost as tall as Mirabel. When had he gotten so tall? ... It was a sunset. Or was it a sunrise? Wait--hadn't it just been night, hadn't he just been in bed? As the last of the orange sun slipped below the line of water, a flash of green raced out like a gunshot, pulsing toward him faster than the tide. WOOSH. He squeezed his eyes shut as it pushed past. Everything tasted green, salt and brine.
For @encantober-official Day 1, I took inspiration from a vision-dream that Bruno has in chapter 13 of my fic La Traes. His reimagined bedroom is from my other fic Bruno from Before; you can find its description below the cut!
There were no more treacherous stairs to trek up, nor ghastly images of a haunted prophet to pass to get to Tío Bruno's cave. Now it was just the ornate round door settled deep into the back wall of his room, shadowed slightly by an hourglass shaped entryway that no longer poured out sand. His main room was cozy and warm now, despite the impossibly high ceiling of the tower that rose above it. Natural light filtered in from the round window at the top of the tower like a cathedral, illuminating minute particles of dust and sand that floated lazily through the air. The left side of his room held a small bed tucked against the wall, a desk littered with papers and pencils, and a dresser situated next to the main door. The entire right side of the room was a sitting area, red and green cushioned chairs angled at each other just enough to encourage conversation but not enough to force it, a low table sitting between them. The backs of the chairs were to the center of the room, the chairs positioned to face a wall of bookshelves loaded with not only books but also doo-dads and collected odds and ends that Tío treasured for some reason or another. Two or three of the plants gifted by Isabela climbed precariously from their potted places on the shelves. One entire shelf seemed to be some sort of rat maze. Framed pictures of each and every Madrigal, some current and some yellowed with age, spread across all the walls like butterflies drifting in clustered groupings. And there, straight across from the main doorway, stood the hourglass cutout and the large round door through that, looking for all the world like nothing more than a particularly interesting closet and not a room where the future sifted into the present.
