my grandpa gave me his old camcorder for my birthday which is a much more serious piece of equipment than the jvc one that i found at that garage sale (i treasure her anyway) but it does take the same miniDV tapes so thankfully i dont have to buy any. it also seemingly has a remote control which is lowkey crazy ivr never had a camera with a remote control. and so many wires! im gonna have to buy some adapters because these are, not compatible with anything i own lol

Troubleshooting & repair of a DIFFERENT old camcorder - audio & power issues - part 1

If there is one thing about me it is that I love old camcorders.

Device: JVC GR-250U MiniDV Camcorder

Symptoms: Issues charging, "Unit in Safeguard Mode" warning, unable to rewind, audio playback cuts in & out on inner speakers/AV out (FireWire transfer fine)

TL;DR: Power stuff mostly handled, audio stuff not handled, I hate soldering tiny micro components

Well this camcorder actually started borking it about 2 years ago and I only now could be bothered to open it up and try and figure out what's up. First things first, I focused on the power issues, because I realized there's a chance the audio issue is a result of the power issues. Power issues do all sorts of stuff. You never know.

Now that I have a multimeter the first steps I took were:

Confirmed A/C adapter is outputting the voltage it's supposed to (confirmed)

Opened it up - this was a nightmare, I might make a teardown video at some point to walk people through it because it was SO annoying even WITH the schematics PDF

Tried to confirm voltages on various parts of the board (this was difficult because the circuits are really complicated and the schematic diagrams are A Lot, but it looked to me like for the most part everything was getting the expected voltages when powered on)

At this point I kinda got stuck so I did the tried and true method of "watch some videos of people who know what the fuck they're doing troubleshooting a similar piece of technology" and found this -

First off, I am jealous about how much easier that camcorder is to tear down than mine was, but anyway. In this case, the issue was a blown fuse. I realized I hadn't even thought to check or look for fuses on my camcorder, so I did that.

And sure enough: the first fuse I saw in big yellow letters labeled on the circuit board, F6001, when I tested across it there was no continuity. Looking at the schematics sheet this fuse is like the first point of failure right off the main power before it goes to just about every other part of the device, including and especially the battery, so that would explain most of the issues I've had with powering it. It also explains why the software stuff worked fine but it would fail when it had to do something mechanically taxing like rewinding a tape - bigger power draw, I imagine.

ANYWAY, just like the guy in the video, I decided I should just try to jumper across it to make it work. I was very idealistic at this time and thought if it worked I could order a replacement fuse and then properly install that.

I had not yet learned how much of a fucking nightmare soldering this stupid thing was going to be.

After 3 hours of my life that I will never get back, I have the ugliest solder job known to man, and have melted several adjacent components, but luckily not damaged them:

Perhaps you don't have a good sense for just how infuriatingly tiny this stupid thing is. Here is my thumb for scale.

I know the picture is blurry as hell. My phone didn't want to zoom in this much because of how freaking tiny this stupid shit is. Anyway. It's fine. I did it. Somehow. Eventually. Very, very eventually.

Verifying the jump was also a pain because there are absolutely no obvious connection points immediately after the fuse on this side of the board, and I cannot emphasize enough how annoying it is to take this circuit board out and access the backside, but whatever, it's fine, I found a capacitor on the backside that worked as a point to test the connection and was able to verify on like my 3rd fucking attempt that I actually soldered across the dumb thing.

I am absolutely not replacing this with another fuse. If it gets overloaded and explodes at some point that's just the will of the gods.

ANYWAY, once that was done I put it mostly back together to test it out. And I am actually pleased to report the power issues are much better. If it's plugged into the A/C directly there are no issues, and even on battery power it seems to charge more, hold a charge better, and give me the "UNIT IN SAFEGUARD MODE" error way less frequently. I have still gotten the error, but I wonder if that will go away if I get a new battery or just do a full battery charge + drain to 0 cycle a couple times. It's much more usable now which is good.

Unfortunately this did not solve the audio issue. I am going to have to learn a lot more about reading schematic sheets to figure out the audio issue. One hint I have is that looking at the outputs from the audio chip, the outputs for the speaker and the A/V out ARE COMPLETELY SEPARATE PINS AND CIRCUITS. Which means since I am getting the same symptom on both, the issue lies somewhere between reading from the tape and getting to that audio chip, in all likelihood.

I will further troubleshoot the audio issue another day. For today I have had enough with this stupid tiny circuit board and its dumb small components.

Indiana Jones' Greatest Adventures

As the title implies, Greatest Adventures takes moments from all three of the movies. There's sadly no way to choose to play the trilogy out of order, like you can in the Lego games. You go through Raiders, then Temple, then Crusade. All the movies feel properly represented here, leading you through their moments and turning them into sidescrolling arcade action. There's also some cutscenes, digitized screencaps of the movies with dry dialogue to remind you of why Indy is going to this next place.

While they disappoint, each level still feels crafted to remind you of each specific movie scene. While the basic run-and-whip platforming action never really changes, each level has a gimmick to make it stand out, like the fire running through the inn in Nepal or the mining prisoners you can rescue for bonus (pointless) points in Pankot. Along with a lot of enemy variety and some mode 7 levels, they really did put quite a bit into the adaptation. And of course inbetween regions, your password is given to you while you watch the red lines to the next location. It really captures classic Indy.

The game itself is hard. Plenty of insta-death pits and insta-death level gimmicks mean that even on easy, you can die fast and constantly. Notably, the second level of the game features the famous boulder, taking up half the screen, and if you touch it you're dead. It's fun when the game encourages you more towards a patient attitude, not so fun when you're expected to just lose lives while you figure things out. There are levels we butt our head against even with save scumming.

It really does sit alongside publisher JVC's Super Star Wars games well, even with a different developer at the helm. If you're a big fan, it's a lot of fun and worth the challenge. Non-fans who are looking for a Castlevania-lite might have a good time if they don't mind some frustrations and ill-conceived gimmicks.

My only problem with this argument (that headphones are too expensive nowadays) is that they’re literally not?? All you need to get in a headphone jack adapter, which you can get for maybe $10 at Best Buy, or get cheaper multi packs on Amazon for at most $8. They make them for both lightning and USBC chargers. It was literally the first thing I bought when I had to upgrade from my old IPhone 6 to my current iPhone SE. And if you need to charge your phone while listening to a video, they make adapters for that as well. Most of the good ones are bulky, and the thinner ones tend to not work as well, but they get the job done in an emergency.

Point is, there’s no real excuse for not having headphones in public in this day and age. I have used the same brand of headphones ever since I discovered a pair that didn’t pinch my ears and give me headaches back when I was a teen (JVC thin headphones) which I can usually find on sale for $12-$15 on Amazon. Pair that with the cost of the adapter and it’s maybe $25-$30 that I spend once every six months, if that. While I understand that can be prohibitive to some people, I’m sure you can find cheaper headphones or ear buds out there. I just can’t use ear buds comfortably based on my ear shape, so I always opt for headphones.

Also, if anyone wants them, here are Amazon links to everything I talked about. If you dislike Amazon, I’m sure you can find the same or similar products elsewhere.

JVC thin headphones: pink colored, currently selling for $13, but you can get any color. I just like pink. :-)

Lightning headphone adapter: I’ve used this brand for a month or so and it’s alright. On sale currently for $8

I’ve been using this brand for years and it works very well for me, and it’s on Best Buy’s website if you prefer it. On sale now for $6 for two, which is… a super good deal, wow. I’m actually going to buy a few of these now, hold on.

The brand I use for my lightning and charging adapter is no longer available (probably because it kinda sucks), but you can find them fairly easily by googling.

I don’t use USBc chargers so I can’t guarantee how good this product is, but here’s a generic USBc headphone adapter I found on Amazon that has decent stars. I’m sure you can find others if you look. Currently selling for $8.

Also, they sell Apple earbuds at least that directly connect to your iPhone. My dad uses them and they’re only $20, if you don’t like adapters. They’re $16 if you need a USBc one. I don’t personally use them, since like I said I don’t use earbuds and I don’t know if they make headphones like this, but it’s an option.

Again. There are no excuses for not having headphones in public. Overcome. Adapt. Grow.
