Decided to be brave and post my first Mentalist fic 🫣

I spent some time this strange summer getting to know the character of Patrick Jane for the first time ever. I've always been an avid TV series consumer, but I came across The Mentalist late in my life, and it happened totally by accident. It was immediately clear to me this was another Sherlock Holmes adaption but I never disdain this type of character, so I jumped in.

It was quite a surprise, though, to discover HOW unpredictable Patrick Jane is. Similar to a sociopath, cold and brash as a stalactite, yet grateful for everything in the natural landscape, in love with the sun as if he were a lizard, almost brought to tears by a gentle ocean breeze or the perfection of a cup of tea, or a cruel word, or a pair of hand-sewn socks? Wow??

I have some reservations about most of the storylines, I consider them a bit weak from a narrative point of view and sometimes a bit cringe due to problematic elements typical of the last decade (context, I know), in seven seasons there are few episodes that i truly enjoyed from start to finish. The season 6 finale, for example? DEFINITELY ENJOYED. it was hilarious and tender and profound, I think it's one of the episodes I would immediately think of, if I had to describe this character and its whole arc.

That said, relationship-wise, this TV show is a MASTERCLASS in slow burn romance!! And the way they handled Jane and Lisbon's new relationship left me completely satisfied, with this unbalanced man who starts gently saying "let me find the right words to apologize to you" and faces this new situation with bravery and grace and openness. Wow!

I think I have a superpower

So the buck being bi thing just made me realize something. I think I have a superpower. I just started watching the series as it comes out this season right, well this season is when they made buck canonically bi. This has happened before for me. I started watching supernatural as it came out on the last season. They made Cas and Dean Canon in the last season. I started watching teen Wolf as it came out on the last season, They made Lydia and stiles canon in the last season. I started watching Andy Mack in the last season. They made Cyrus and TJ canon in the last season. It’s happened other times too but those are the times it happened with the BIGGEST ships.

This scene from 5x01 is fascinating; there's so much unsaid but still fully communicated - both between them and to the audience.

Lorelei Martins presents a conundrum for the audience. She is presented as a femme fatale. She is literally presented to Jane by Red John, and as a present, she's something of a Trojan Horse. She's looks like Lisbon, but she is like Jane.

At this point in the show, Jane values two things, nearly equally: his quest for revenge against Red John and his relationship with Lisbon. The quest has been his #1 priority for a decade or more, but in working with Lisbon and the team, Jane has become marginally tamed. He sees what it's like to be cared for, and he's found that strong person - a better person - who will be there for him through thick and thin, someone who he can truly trust in every way.

Lorelei is a threat to both of those things, and I think he senses it, but does not want to admit it. He does not.

He knew she was Red John's weapon. He wanted to be approached. He thought he could easily dismiss that she resembles the woman he loves. While he and Lisbon are not a couple and have never been physical, Jane does love Lisbon, and he needs her in his life. He accepts her on her terms, whatever those terms may be.

Lorelei is a direct threat to Lisbon - she demands her head to give to Red John. But she's also a threat to the trust that he's developed with Lisbon because he knows that Lisbon will not like that he's become intimate - in any way - with Lorelei. He's also unwilling to talk about that intimacy because he's in denial. And not about Lorelei and her importance or his attraction, whatever those may be. He's in denial that he's the one in control in this situation.

He WANTS to be in control. He needs to be the one doing the playing, not the one being played.

See how defensive he gets when Lisbon tells him Lorelei is playing him? He mocks her suggestion that he tell her what Lorelei's game is. Like that's so far fetched. It's his literal job to tell her what the criminal's game is, and he does it all of the time.

But if Lorelei is playing him, Jane is not the one in control. And worse, it might not just be Lorelei who's is pulling his strings.

Lorelei is like Jane. She's been traumatized by Red John, and she lost her most important person. She's also a sly, cunning criminal. Being cruelly victimized by a psychopathic killer can lead to multiple outcomes. Jane became a better person, partly because of Lisbon and the CBI team. Lorelei became further enthralled to Red John.

Jane is an exceedingly lonely man. He wants to get close to people, but he is excruciatingly aware that anyone he gets close to become a potential target. In gifting him Lorelei, Red John is giving him a peace offering: Here's someone you can love. I'll let you have this person, someone who will understand exactly what you're going through. You don't have be alone. We don't have to be enemies. And you don't have to be a better person, you can be yourself. We like you for who you are.

In this short scene, we see Jane wrestle with that comprehension and his loyalties, to Lisbon and his mission.

Ultimately, he rejects Red John's peace offering and tries to turn Lorelei, at which point she betrays his trust, goes after Red John herself, and puts her lust for revenge over and above Jane's offer of friendship and a successful outcome. He loses his hard earned lead, six months of his life, and a person he wanted to try to save (a version of himself). He loses everything but Lisbon's friendship.

What Red John didn't understand is that Jane doesn't want or need someone like himself. He needs a person of compassion, concern, objectivity, self-sacrifice, and iron-clad loyalty.

Lorelei Martins - There but for the grace of Lisbon, goes Jane. And that's not who he wants (or needs) to be. He knows how that story ends: in an alley, alone, covered in blood. And without Lisbon and her stubborn loyalty and patience, he probably would have come to the same end.

This interaction between Jane and Lisbon is so short but demonstrates so much growth for both of them from where they were when the series began.

Lisbon feels very insecure about her ability to handle this problem with her brother (the law enforcement angle makes is doubly embarrassing for her, an FBI agent). She doesn't want to handle it alone, but that's the way it's always been, and she feels like if she asks for help, it makes her look weak and incapable.

Jane wants to help her. He knows how insecure she feels and how much guilt she has. But he doesn't want to encroach. He's never met any of her family before, and their relationship is very new. He also doesn't want to imply that she's incapable (although he probably knows that the entrenched family communication dynamics make a successful outcome here unlikely).

So he asks. And then clarifies. Do you want me to come? As in: It's okay if you don't, but you don't have to be alone in this. He gives her the choice. No pressure. He's careful. This is her sore spot. He knows it.

And she accepts. Gratefully. With relief.

And look at his face. He's so happy that she wants his help. Proud and pleased. "We'll do it together."

Again, this is how he reacts to being chosen. Wanted. Jane is intensely sensitive to rejection. He reacts immediately and often cruelly to anyone questioning or mocking him. Yet he still puts himself out there because he knows Lisbon is unhappy and he can help. And she lets herself show her vulnerability and accept help.

So. Much. Growth. Jane is such a good boyfriend in the episode. My heart.

You know, I can come with you if you want me to. That wouldn’t be any fun for you.

The Mentalist Episode of the Week (Week 31/?) - At First Blush 4x14.

When Jane and Rigsby are interrogating Murphy, all three actors are using a different accent than the one they were born with. Jane-Australian/American, Rigsby-Welsh/American, and Murphy- English/Irish.

Rigsby has to fake an Irish accent. In the German dub, it's a French accent.

A lot of the actors in this episode had starred with each other before/would go on to costar together - Owain Yeoman and Ian Kahn in TURN: Washington's Spies, Samaire Armstrong guest-starred in NUMB3RS with Diane Farr and Bonnie Somerville & Carrie Wilta play sisters here, two months after playing sisters in "Holiday Engagement".
