Torakoishi from Japanese folklore.
The stone was invented by Utagawa Yoshikazu in his series depicting the fifty stations of the Tōkaidō, and its name is a pun based on a legendary stone named Toragoishi kept at Endaiji Temple in Ōiso.
The story behind Torakoishi dates back to the late 12th century when a samurai named Yamashita Chōja prayed to Toraike Benzaiten for a child. Benzaiten appeared to his wife in a dream, resulting in the miraculous appearance of a stone that grew with their daughter Tora. The stone grew in size as Tora grew older, and she became a renowned dancer, courtesan, and eventually a concubine of the warrior Soga Sukenari.
One day, Sukenari's enemy sent an assassin to kill him, but the stone magically disguised itself as Sukenari and saved his life. The chips in the stone from the arrow and sword strikes remain as proof of its life-saving power, and the miraculous stone became a famous tourist attraction in Ōiso. It is now enshrined at Endaiji, where it is popular among worshippers seeking safe childbirth, protection, and other blessings.

Research never ends... Found this in a secondhand bookstore today while my car was being serviced. It's kind of a thick book, but all the legends range in length from a paragraph to at most two pages. Perfect for squeezing in some learning, a few minutes at a time. #japanesemythology #japaneselegends #japanesemyths #research #book #referencebook #supportyourlocalbookstore #fantasywriter #indiewriter #writersofinstagram #candyglynnwilder #writingcommunity https://www.instagram.com/p/CH3ZNtBgL7r/?igshid=13vegfej0gov5
