Could've Been It
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Day 19 of Narcoctober- Create a fanwork about a character so emotionally or physically hurt that they can’t help but start crying even though they don’t want to.
Character(s): Javier Pena x Sandra Castellano (OC)
CW: language, blood, gun violence, shooting
WC: 793
A/N: Another installation of Javi x Sandra! Their banter is so cute even in life or death situations lol.
It’s always easy to take advantage of those nearest to you when you think nothing bad can ever happen to them.
Sandra rushed out the townhouse, partly peeved with her latest argument with Javi and partly rushed because of her urgent meeting with a potential source on her latest exposé. She left Javi in the dust of their fiery row, storming towards the front door as he stood still in the bedroom, his shoulders rising and falling with still stored anger.
There was a chill wisp to the morning air and Sandra lowered her gaze, saving her eyes from the mercilessness of the wind. Had her eyes been more focused on her surroundings, she might’ve seen the glint of metal that rebounded from her nearby car. As it was, she was barely a step out of the door before she felt her frame being knocked backwards by a strong force. The impact is so intense that she doesn’t even register the sound of a gun firing.
The first bullet hits her right shoulder and it knocks her off-kilter towards the front door she didn’t even get the chance to close. The second bullet would’ve entered straight through Javi’s head had he not been leaning down, dragging Sandra into their entryway.
Sandra’s hit with the smell of OdoBan as her side hits the wooden floors and she has enough sense to inchworm her way further out of the line of fire as Javi shuts the door and seeks to find cover. He grabs her by one arm and drags her behind him, pushing her behind the couch with his gun in hand. He grabs his cell out of the back pocket of his jeans and throws it towards her. She immediately grabs for it and dials 911.
“How bad?” Javi asks as he scopes out the shooter, leaning on one knee near the front window.
“Well, it’s not a fucking picnic,” Sandra manages to force out before giving the dispatch their address.
“You’re so fucking dramatic,” he utters, eyes still focused on outside. He had registered the sound of wheels scuffing the road as he was dragging Sandra away, but couldn’t be too sure that their would-be assailants were long gone by now.
Sandra moves the phone away from her face, “I’m fucking dramatic?! Tell that to the guy who put a HOLE in me instead of ringing the doorbell and kindly stating his issue!”
Javi sighs and moves towards another window, still kneeling down. Like always, in these types of situations, his heart is racing and he’s taking in deep, heavy breaths as if coming up from the water. He should be used to it, and part of him is. He’s used to being put in harm’s way with the life that he’s led. He’s used to hearing about the batshit crazy antics that Sandra has gotten into that’s nearly gotten herself killed. But he’s never been so close to being an up close and personal witness to her life being in the balance. It’s always been stories she tells that have happened in the past tense or her calling him from the hospital to pick her up. It’s never been so close to him that he could taste the essence of the Grim Reaper in the air.
“Keep talking so I know you’re still kicking,” he says. All this time, she’s been out of view from behind the couch as he scouts the perimeter of their house from the living room and kitchen.
“I’m gonna be kicking something if the ambulance doesn’t hurry up.”
He’s searched all he can search and in concordance with Sandra’s threats, he hears the sirens of the EMS in the vicinity of their place. He lowers his weapon but doesn’t holster it. He makes his way to her, watching how she’s taken her favorite throw and is currently using it to stifle the bleeding. He leans down, holding his hand over hers, keeping the pressure strong.
She turns to him and that crooked smile of hers softens as she peers up at him.
“You’re crying,” she says.
Javi wipes at what he thinks is blood spatter from her wound and realizes that he’s looking at tears on his fingers.
He shrugs, “Well, I guess I really do like you.”
She giggles and then hisses at how the movement causes pain, “You guess? You don’t know what you’d do without me.”
The paramedics enter, led by officers who are working on clearing the area. Without much glance at him, the medics are moving him out of the way and tending to Sandra. He watches them wheel her away and he follows hollowly.
Under his breath, he finally replies to her, “You have no idea how true that is.”

Hugh's Bats line up update 5/6/204
First change is prospect James Wood and starting pitcher Justin Steele are gone. I traded them away for Nick Castellanos who is off to a dreadful start. His track record is long enough I have faith he will turn it around...all this in the pursuit of home runs.
Someone dumped Mike Trout in my league, I think they were running out of Injury Reserve spots. Anyway I snagged him.
Joe Musgrove is gone. He has a forearm strain and has been awful all season. In his stead is Javier Assad who currently has an ERA under 2 at the moment. The knock against Assad is he gives up a ton of hard contact and the popular thinking is that hard contact will turn into home runs as the weather warms up. But what if it doesn't? I know that he won't keep the ERA that low all season but I'm going to see where this goes.
Daniel Hudson is gone. He blew two saves in a row and Andrew Kitteredge was on the waiver wire so I swapped them out.
Home runs were down again this week for Hugh's Bats. The sole bright spot was Christopher Morel who had three. I don't think anyone else hit one at all! Brutal.

Imagine Javier when Los Pepes threaten to hurt you if he doesn't work with them
Tumblr media
"From our viewpoint. There really isn't much to lose. You're already as corrupt as they come. That's been proven." Judy stated, staring at Javier.
He continued to nurse the whiskey he'd been handed. Wondering how he'd managed to get so deep in with the opposition to Escobar.
"Come on Javi. We've been helping each other out for a while now. Surely we have a level of trust?"
Javier snorted, which coincidentally was the wrong response. On looking up at the Castellano brothers, they were both glaring at him.
"Well. Seems we may have to force some trust." Judy looked over to the brothers who nodded. Disappearing out of the lavish drawing room.
Piquing his interest, he looked up at Judy for the first time since sitting down.
"How much do you value your life. Javier?" She questioned, "well, a better question would be. How much do you value your friends lives?"
The sound of shuffling feet could be heard, and then Javier's stomach dropped. The Castellano brothers walked back in and in between the two of them. Was you. A black cloth bag over your head and hands bound in front of you with tape.
"What the fuck is this?"
"Trust me now?"
"I think you have a twisted view on where trust comes from."
"Javi?" Your voice brought him back, and he made to stand up and move towards you. Both brothers however moved their rifles into view, eyeballing Javier at the same time.
Holding up his hands he backed up. Turning to Judy, who was looking positively amused.
"Y/n, you're alright. I'll get you out of here soon."
You nodded, despite the bag over your head. Javier noticed your favourite pyjama bottoms, ones l that had once been his. It then dawned on him that they must have grabbed you from your apartment. It sent off a flame of anger in his chest. How angry and scared you must have been - and still are.
"Judy. What the fuck are you getting at here? You clearly know what you want so just spit it out."
"We want... an agreement."
"What for?"
"That any, let's say, operations? Don't get investigated, they are for the better of our country. Anyone who stands in the way of Escobar is going to get lead. And we don't need DEA ruining that."
"Haven't you noticed no ones been investigating anything? What the fuck do you think I've been doing all this time?" Javier snapped, dumbfounded that this was happening on an already arranged agreement.
"I can think of a few things"
"Come off it Judy. There has to be more to it than this. You didn't have to kidnap her just to make a point."
"It's made my point though, right?" She deadpanned, glancing over at you.
"Yes, well done, point made, now if you don't mind?" Javier gestured to you.
Judy nodded towards them and the brothers let go of their grip on you. Causing you to stumble forward a few paces. Javier rushed forward to meet you. Pulling the bag off your head. You squinted into the bright light of the room, letting out a sob when you realised you were safe.
"I'm sorry sweetheart. This shouldn't have happened." he grunted, ripping the tape off your wrists.
"Thank you," once free you threw your arms around his neck, he reciprocated the hug just as tight as you did.
"Come on, are we free to go?" Javier pointed his question to Judy.
"Of course." She smiled, if it weren't for the situation and the blackmail he would have mistaken her smile for someone with a conscience.

Tumblr media Tumblr media
Day 18 of Narcoctober- Create a fanwork about characters experiencing, participating in, or witnessing a real life historical event (could have been depicted in canon or not) e.g. moon landing.
Character(s): Javier Pena x Sandra Castellano (OC); kinda platonic kinda not
CW: language, terrorism/bombing, mentions of OKC bombing
WC: ~1.2K
A/N: Hiii enjoy this cameo of Sandra from IWBSS. The setting in history is the OKC bombing, but the fic mostly focuses on the dynamic between these two.
They kept in touch once they moved onto separate assignments. Javi was transferred back to El Paso, working several cases including crime bosses who specialized in designer drugs and laced fentanyl. Sandra was working on a paper that linked cities where drug cartels had gotten a foothold in. It had taken her to Jaurez, Calexico, and even Miami, where she had spent her formative years. Now, she was in Oklahoma City, exploring the rival gangs that were purported to be enemies of the Sinaloa cartel.
Her and Javi still talked on the phone, often under the guise of seeking professional opinions from one another but often delving into other topics such as Javi beating the latest level of his Zombies Ate My Neighbors video game or the latest addition to Sandra’s growing records collection.
Over the past few months, their calls had upped to once a week on average, and sometimes more, depending on their schedules. It had been so seamless that neither had really noticed that the other had become part of their regular routine. It wasn’t long before they found no excuses to call, just simply opting to dial the other over anything they wanted to talk about in the moment.
This morning, Sandra was calling him, coffee thermos in the other hand, to thank him for getting her in touch with a fellow DEA agent that’d be able to help her with her current assignment. The federal building wasn’t far from the hotel she was living out of and they spoke on the phone as she walked the way there.
“Just know that if this guy gives me the runaround or some bogus info, you’ll have me to answer to.”
She can hear the smirk in Javi’s voice as he replies, “I think we both know I’ve been on your bad side enough times to know better by now.”
“And don’t you forget it,” she shoots back.
“How much longer you gonna be in OKC anyway? I’m tired of you complaining about the mosquitos over there.”
“Yeah, well, they’re the size of fucking birds. Don’t even get me started on the amount of armadillo roadkill I’ve passed by on the freeway.”
Javi cuts in, “There’s armadillos in Texas, too.”
“Anyway, I’m gonna be here until I feel like I’ve got enough for my assignment.”
Javi hums, “Hmmm.”
“Hmmm? What does “hmmm” mean?”
There’s a pause on the phone before he speaks, “It’s just been a minute since we’ve seen each other. Was wondering if you’d be able to make the drive down my way.”
Javi’s been attempting to find a way to casually make the suggestion since about three phone calls ago, but wasn’t sure the best way to go about it. His own investigation, right now, prevented him from leaving his post, but Sandra seemed to have a more flexible, albeit spontaneous, schedule. It’d been about a year since they last saw each other in person and with the recent ramp up of their communication, he figured he’d throw the bone out there.
“Awww, somebody misses me?” Sandra teases. “Or are you just looking for your next booty call?”
Javi chuckles, “C’mon, I’m a classy guy! I’d at least fly you down instead of making you drive if that was the case.”
He revels in her loud giggles that crosses over his phone line.
“You’re not gonna be too happy when the first thing I do when I see you is punch the shit out of you,” she declares.
“Ouch, yeah, I think Carrillo still feels it in his nose from that time you decked hi-”
Javi’s words are cut off by a loud explosion that echoes from the speaker. He’s up out of the rolling desk chair in his office instantaneously.
“Sandra!” he shouts, “Sandra!”
There’s screaming, car alarms, and sounds of large objects falling and colliding against one another. It’s utter chaos and for a few moments, Javi’s worried that he’s heard Sandra’s last words. It takes several more seconds before he hears heavy breathing directly into the line.
“Shit,” she mutters. He can hear movement as if she’s changing positions.
“Sandra,” Javi calls for her again.
“I- I think there was a fucking bomb.” He can hear her heels clack against the sidewalk and the way in which they speed up as if she’s running.
“What?”
“A bomb, Javi. I was about to cross the street to the federal building and half of it’s just fucking gone.”
He exclaims, “Fuck! Are you alright? Are you hurt?”
“I’ve been worse for wear before,” she says, which isn’t a straight answer in his head and he surmises that she’s got either not a scratch on her or one of her bones sticking out about now. He also knows she’s batshit crazy enough to run towards danger instead of away from it.
“Sandra, turn the fuck back around and get to safety. You can’t be the one to break the story if you’re in the ground.”
She scoffs, “There are people that could be hurt-”
“You hear those sirens in the background? They’re first responders who know what they’re fucking doing,” Javi cuts in, “Besides, you’re gonna act like you won’t be sniffing for questions while you’re ‘helping’?”
He knows she can hear the air quotes even when they’re not face to face. The same way he could just see the eye roll she gives him just now at his words.
“Well, yeah, but everything is history, and firsthand accounts could even help with identifying the monsters that did this.”
“Also not your job, Sandra!” It’s a Wednesday morning and he’s supposed to be focusing on his current case, but the inner voice in his head tells him “fuck it.” He’s grabbing his jacket and keys, solely intent on walking past his bosses’ office, getting into his car, and driving to Oklahoma. “At the very least, stick with an actual first responder, they’re probably gonna set up a triage and command post for all the agencies.”
She’s too stubborn to answer but he knows her resolute sigh well enough to know that she’ll heed his advice.
The line gets fuzzy for a moment, and Javi considers that they probably might lose connection with all of the 911 calls probably pouring in at her location.
“Look, just-” he pauses again, unsure of what to say without it being too small or too big. There was a right time for everything after all. “Just be careful. I’ll see you soon.”
He hangs up his cell without waiting for a response and starts up his car.
It’s night time when he finally gets there and he knows well enough that she’s still at the scene even after all this time.
It takes several minutes to find her, but a petite woman with a gray tarp covering her, dried blood stains on the side of her head, who’s also currently badgering a police officer for information, comes into his view. The officer must give some morsel of solid information because she’s furiously writing in her little notepad and then giving him a genuine thank you with a curt nod.
She’s not searching for him when their eyes meet but she immediately smirks when he comes into her view.
They both take rushed steps towards each other, lightly pushing between other responders and families reuniting with their loved ones.
They finally meet in the middle and she chuckles, “You are so fucking dramatic.”
