As Maya set out on her hike through the tranquil forest, she couldn't help but feel a sense of nostalgia wash over her. This was one of her favorite places in the world -- a place their dad would take them. If they weren't camping, they'd be fishing, and if they weren't fishing they'd do something else. He was so good, teaching them about how to survive in the middle of nature as if a time would come that they'd need that. He taught her how to shoot, which plants to avoid, and most importantly how to respect the beauty of the surrounding nature. From the rustling of the leaves to the sound of the nearby stream and the wonderful scent of pine trees, helped her feel at peace. With Benji by her side, the two made their way down the path; enjoying every moment of their little adventure.
It wasn't rare for her joyful furball to bark with excitement over anything or anyone. Truth to be told, the brunette didn't think a person would be following the same path, and by all the times Benji stopped and barked at a squirrel, her initial thought was that another creature had caught her attention instead of a person. Lost in her thoughts, Maya watched as her dog bounded happily ahead of her to greet someone who was a few feet down the path. "Benji -- shit." she muttered under her breath, watching as the dog completely ignored her. "Come here, girl. Benji -- come."
Laine did not make it a habit to run; seldom in the early hours of the morning if she could not sleep after a shift, or if Shinchan was getting restless. But that day she found herself rounding the corner, a vigilant footpath as she chased after the basketball that was rolling down the street. An accident from a fruit stand further up and a baby that had kicked it down the hill just to see what would happen. Watching as it spiralled into the intersection and get hit by a truck, Lainey let out a light oof, "oh motherfucking fucker," she cursed as she stopped in front of The Jade Palace, a series of double takes when her eyes spotted a mundane figure looming outside. "Javier? You're─sorry, smoker's lungs." Palms on her knees, hunched over and heaving to catch a breath, Lainey gazed back up at the other in front of her, sun-lit by the rocky region glow, and just as she recalled.
"Here, uh, wait," she said, leaning in as if anyone on the sidewalk would know what they were speaking of, "are you here for Maya?" She asked, arching an eyebrow. "You know if Harper sees you here she'll have a heart attack, the good kind, well not the good kind but you know what I mean," she struggled to find the words but she still knew Harper sent him Christmas cards every year, etc. in hopes one day he'd find his way back to Maya. In truth, Laine was not sure she could ever bring anyone home that amounted to Javier in her mother's mind. "Just might want to stay clear of Claret Park, at least for now," A joke to ease the tension she was feeling since he could do whatever the hell he wanted; she knew him to be that sort. "... hi... it's... it's good to see you." And she meant it, unknowing of the specifics that led to the couple's demise. She should hate him, scoff in his face and save any excuse he might have, and a part of her does since if Maya was sent on marrying him and then just called it off, something must have been very wrong. Still, he was a face of the past she welcomed, many ghosts appearing in the past few months to wonder what sort of fortuity this was.

The Good Boss (2022, dir. Fernando León de Aranoa) - review by Rookie-Critic
The Good Boss was a hilarious satire on the fucked up power dynamics of the workplace. Javier Bardem shines as he most always does as Julio Blanco, the CEO of a scale manufacturer that presents himself, as the name of the film suggests, as a "good boss." You quickly realize though the he is anything but good, and is willing to manipulate anyone and everyone, whether an employee, an intern, or just someone in his general sphere of influence, to get what he wants. There's a lot of masking horrible deeds with humor here, by design, of course, and I think that works in the film's favor. We all know corporate bosses and those in power over others in the workplace are almost always looking out for themselves and themselves only, and that the employees are just pawns for them to meet their own ends. Who here hasn't heard the classic "we're a family" line from their superiors?
If this film had attempted to play the satire a little closer to the chest, with a stronger emphasis on drama over comedy, I feel like the message wouldn't have been as effective. Who wants to be depressed by the corporate greed movie? We all feel that every Monday-Friday anyway. What we really want, and what this film provides and is the anchor of why I feel it works, is to be able to laugh at the boss as his hole keeps getting dug deeper and deeper and the façade becomes harder and harder to maintain. To see the ridiculousness of the ploy of making workers think their superior actually cares for them as more than just an extension of their reputation and profits get pushed to its absolute limit. All culminating in a final scene that manages to end on a joke without sacrificing its message.
There are many other things that this film does well, chief among them is introduce the world to Almudena Amor, who plays Liliana, an intern that Blanco has his eye on, but that may have a few tricks up her sleeve. I could go into much more detail about all the other little things that I noticed and liked about the film, but ultimately I feel this is one that should be experienced by anyone who has ever worked. Period. Which is to say everyone over the age of 18 and probably a ton of people younger than that, as well.

When Natalia showed up in a full black, tight outfit, a collective silence befell the group.
Raúl looked at the other two. Sofía looked like she was amused but trying very hard to hide it. Javier looked like he’d utterly lost the ability to speak.
Well, if no one was going to comment on it, he would.
“Would you look at that, agent Romanoff is here!” He joked. “Did S.H.I.E.L.D send you?”
Natalia scrunched her face in utter confusion, looking at him like he’d grown two heads. “What?”
Raúl’s smile faded. Sofía walked up to his side. “Not everyone is as much of a nerd as you,” she told him, and then went to Natalia, inviting her to walk with her. “Come, I’ll explain on the way what we’re looking for.”
The guys followed them down the school’s hallway. And just like that, the topic was dropped.
As the girls walked ahead, Raúl came to notice that Natalia’s pants were pretty much skin-tight, leaving practically nothing of her round ass for the imagination.
It wasn’t like he was particularly interested in it, but it was right there in his line of vision, so they’d have to excuse a guy for stealing a glance. If anything, he was a victim of the circumstances.
And he wasn’t the only one who noticed.
Looking to his left, Raúl found a tide of amusement surging inside him. Javier looked so uncomfortable, struggling with where to put his gaze as they walked.
Raúl moved slyly closer to his side.
“Having troubles over there?” He asked quietly.
Javier tensed up and made his face blank, looking straight ahead. “I have no idea what you’re talking about.”
Raúl scoffed. “Well, I do.” He brought his gaze to the matter at hand. “I mean, look at those cheeks. It almost makes it a crime that she wears wide skirts every day.”
Javier turned on him in a millisecond, a rough hand shoving his shoulder back, stopping them both.
“Can you focus on what we’re here to do please?” He hissed.
Raúl put his hands up in mock surrender, working very hard to not let his grin show.
“Hey,” Sofía called out to them from the front. “Don’t lag behind.”
The moment Javier walked in front of him, Raúl laughed under his breath.
Awaiting a visit by a committee that could give his company an award for excellence, the owner of an industrial scales manufacturing business tries to resolve any problems from his workers in enough time.
I very much enjoyed the performance of Javier Bardem. He's is almost always good, but just like with Penélope Cruz, when he speaks in his native language, it adds another layer and it feels much more natural and compelling.
