Life is great these days for Wilmette native Seana Kofoed — she’s living in Hawaii with her husband and two children, performing in the cast of the hit CBS TV series “NCIS Hawaii,” with her husband Jason Antoon, and ClearMind, a movie that she wrote, produced, and appeared in, is set for release on Jan. 11.
“Happy day after Thanksgiving,” the actor, writer and producer cheerfully greeted me during a Zoom interview. She then clarified her roots saying she was born in Highland Park Hospital but raised in Wilmette.
While she was growing up in Wilmette, she did perform in high school productions but downplayed her roles there.
“I was not the rising star at New Trier,” she said. “I was always in the ensemble.”
When it came time to choose a course of study, Kofoed said that she had to decide between theater or anthropology. Theater won and she went on to Northwestern University after convincing her parents.
“Somehow I convinced my parents that it would be good — and they believed me,” Kofoed said. “I think they figured I would switch over at some point to English or something. They were hoping for law school for a long time.”
Kofoed took off one semester from Northwestern to study at the Royal National Theatre in London, an experience she remembers fondly.
“I loved it. I learned so much,” she said. “We can do Mamet here but they win at Shakespeare.”
Following graduation, Kofoed began her career in Chicago, starting as an understudy for a production at the Goodman Theatre. She then earned roles at a number of Chicago theaters, including Goodman, Court and Victory Gardens.
“I feel like I was also trained by Chicago theater,” she said. “It has such a great theater community. It is the best combination of talent and work ethic of anywhere I’ve ever worked.”
Despite her love of Chicago theater, Kofoed moved to New York after a few years. “It felt like there was a ceiling,” she explained. “There was only a handful of roles each year that were in my age range at that time.”
In New York, Kofoed appeared on Broadway in “Proof” with Jennifer Jason Leigh and “Night Must Fall” with Matthew Broderick. She also had a number of off-Broadway credits but after a decade or so moved on to Los Angeles.
“It was a little bit back-and-forth,” Kofoed said.
In Los Angeles, Kofoed appeared on a number of television shows and was a series regular on Jenny Bicks’ “Men in Trees” and the Jamie Denbo/Jenji Kohan “American Princess.”
Tumblr media
Kofoed wasn’t able to reveal any details about the coming season on “NCIS Hawaii” because she didn’t know what was going to happen.
“They tell us nothing,” she revealed, adding, “They’re amazing. We feel we’re in great hands. They let their supporting characters shine.”
In addition to performing, Kofoed is a busy writer. Her writing credits include the feature film, “30 Miles from Nowhere”; the short film, “Together Apart”; and the comedy “Donna’s Revenge: Confessions of an ex-Contestant.”
Tumblr media
Wilmette native Seana Kofoed wrote, produced, and performed in the movie ClearMind, which will be released on Jan. 11. - Original Credit: Handout (Seana Kofoed/HANDOUT)
“There’s this woman grieving over the loss of her daughter and she decides to do this virtual reality therapy program and she uses it to exact revenge on her former friends,” she said.
The author described the movie as darkly comedic and plays one of the woman’s friends in the movie.
“ClearMind” will be released on Jan. 11 on all of the digital platforms. “We’ll probably do a DVD release but we haven’t set a time for that yet,” Kofoed said. She is also hoping to get the movie on airlines.
Kofoed revealed that she has two writing projects in the planning stages.
“I’m trying to set one here in Hawaii because we’re here and we have this great crew,” she said. “I’ll do one in Chicago because I still have family and super close friends in Chicago.”
It’s a great time for Kofoed and her husband who, like most performers, have gone through periods of unemployment.
“We feel incredibly lucky,” Kofoed declared. “We’re enjoying it for sure.”

On second (or maybe fourth) viewing: Weeds, season 1 (created by Jenji Kohan, 2005)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Having technically known it by heart after several intense re-watchings back in the mid-2000s, I have recently had showed it to my boyfriend, who knew it only tangentially (generation gap!). I remember criticism that Weeds' later seasons (with the exception of 4 and 6) got lost in the re-invention need, with the location shifts camouflaging the storytelling staleness. It's a valid point, I re-watched chunks of seasons 7-8 last year, and cringed heavily at the stinky quality of everything that does not revolve around Mary Louise Parker's nuanced performance. The tenure of the series proved that Nealon and Gould are limited actors and that Parrish, when given a chance of emotionally complex characterization, can pull an interesting performance (season four's ending is his highlight). But it is Parker who remains amazing throughout. In those later seasons, she got a fantastic screen partner in Jennifer Jason Leigh, with whom she shared awesome, brittle, sexy, and extremely lively sisterly chemistry. In this opening season, her great partner is Perkins, whose role would become more of a nasty caricature in her last two seasons (the ones outside Agrestic). What surprised me this time though is how clumsily shot and badly written this season is, part of which points to its temporal situatedness: the characters of color are only drug dealers and maids. White guys (and Celia) throw homophobic and ableist slurs as joke punchlines. Suddenly, starting with episode four, there are weird fade-outs truncating the wobbly rhythm of the episodes. Regardless of that, I am looking forward to re-watching season two, which was my favorite back then: I never was a fan of Donovan, but his on-screen relationship with Nancy Botwin was a highlight.

But that July 2013 weekend, TV viewers would meet and fall in love with a cast of screw-ups and give birth to a new industry term: binge. The series — inclusive before it was commonplace — catapulted Netflix into scripted originals, racked up Emmy recognition and became the streaming giant's (allegedly) most-watched original offering. (Per Sarandos, 105 million of Netflix's 151 million paid subscribers worldwide have watched at least one episode of the show.)
During the course of its seven-season run, Kohan would steer Orange and its breakout ensemble into groundbreaking and daring territory, with prescient storytelling and a desire to make viewers laugh while demanding accountability from the prison industrial system at large. Orange blazed a trail with inclusive LGBTQ stories, sociopolitical storylines involving criminal justice reform, the Black Lives Matter movement and now, with its final season, immigration detention centers.

From Kosher Meals to Conversion, “Black Cindy” Becomes “Tova”: Examining Judaism in Orange is the New Black
“I’m ready to get my Jew on. And it ain’t just about the food although the more I been learnin’, the food a big part of it, am I right?”
The catalyst for the most intriguing storyline in season three of the Netflix dramedy Orange is the New Black (2013) begins unexpectedly, and religiously, at the heart of all Jewish culture (and my Bubbie’s number one concern when I enter the house): food. Although disappointingly, not with bagels. Nonetheless, Orange is the New Black (OITNB) highlights a wonderfully rich example of the relationship of religion in popular culture. In understanding this relation, Bruce David Forbes invites us to consider the fundamental questions about how religion is expressed and portrayed in the series (11 – 12).
After the privatization of Litchfield Penitentiary, notoriously mediocre prison meals become significantly worse. To reduce costs, the inmates’ meals start coming pre-prepared. In a word, the brown slop that the women are served appears as if when ladled onto a serving tray makes a sound that’s repulsive enough to make viewers want to dry-heave.
However, the inmates discover a loophole to combat eating the thawed sludge. Lolly Whitehill, a savvy inmate, suggests that, “if you tell cafeteria workers you’re Jewish, you’ll get kosher meals, which is way better than prison food – and they can’t question your religion, because it’s illegal”.
Tumblr media
Predictably, this leads to a sudden increase in the number of “Jewish” inmates who keep kosher. MCC, the private prison corporation, becomes suspicious of the growing affinity for Judaism after requests for kosher meals increases. In an effort to save money, while also making some unanticipated holocaust jokes, MCC sends a “Rent-a-Rabbi” to Litchfield to detect who is actually Jewish.
During Rabbi Tatelbaum’s interrogations, the women recite every Jewish stereotype and trope in an attempt to receive kosher meals. Though, Cindy “Black Cindy” Hayes goes above and beyond, as she passionately intertwines the plots from Annie Hall and Yentl into the story of her upbringing.
youtube
OITNB has been lauded for its diverse representation of female characters and the nuance with which their stories are told. Yet, prima facie the portrayal of Judaism and Jews in this precise scene has received some audience backlash as problematic, and at worst, has been chided as anti-Semitic. This critique of OITNB merits further reflection.
Sana Amanat’s discussion on identity, representation in media, and stereotyping provides a useful starting point for thinking about OITNB. In her TEDx Talk, Amanat describes how our individual identity is tied to the group identity, and how this social identity can be affected and oftentimes shaped by larger cultural representations, particularly through the imposition of stereotypes (5:32 – 7:00). Stereotyping can be detrimental to the sense of self because it works to flatten and essentialize diversity into a binary, ultimately seeking to minimize and categorize non-dominant groups as “Other” (Harris). The stereotypes that the women express in their interviewers are not meant to demonize, disempower, negatively impact, or belittle Jewish folks; in my decoding of the scene (Hall), it appears to do quite the opposite. The montage highlights the women’s ignorance and lack of maliciousness toward Judaism, while simultaneously debunking the validity of the stereotypes because of their absurdity. For instance, when Tasha “Taystee” Jefferson proclaims, “you know what I hate? Shrimps. Damn, dirty shrimps. Don’t even talk to me about shrimps!” its purpose is not to position Judaism as the punchline of the joke, it’s to convey a message about Taystee’s lack of knowledge and society’s habitually simplistic (mis)understanding of Jewish cultural traditions and religion more broadly. In contrast to how Muslims are discursively depicted in Western popular culture as one-dimensional caricatures of America-hating villains, the Jewish stereotypes in OITNB are clearly just funny - I mean, did you hear the woman spontaneously break out into her own rendition of “Hava Nagila”? The stereotypes are not indicative of xenophobia, nor do the portrayals actually influence national security policy discussions. I would be hard-pressed to find any Jews being detained by the TSA because of stereotypes surrounding their dietary restrictions.
When Cindy Hayes doesn’t make the list of inmates approved for kosher meals, she decides to convert to Judaism. Cindy makes a genuinely tearful plea to the Rabbi that captures the crux of Judaism, and what it means to truly practice one’s religion. In the season three finale, Cindy’s conversion comes to a climax as it just so happens that there’s a lake beside the prison enabling her to have her Mikvah.
youtube
Black Cindy’s conversion to Judaism is treated as a serious development in her character arc. Susanna Danuta Walters’ questioning of “whose gaze?” (Harris) can help us understand the meaning behind this plotpoint. When Cindy is given permission to convert, it’s obvious the storyline that began as a joke is no more. Cindy’s desire to convert doesn’t merely stem out of wanting better meals, it emanates from feeling estranged from her own religious roots. Moreover, Rabbi Tatelbaum recognizes that Cindy is lying and instead of becoming irritated he applauds her endeavour to understand Jewish culture through examining classic Jewish cinema. OITNB portrays the Rabbi as empathetic, and Judaism as a religion that is open and accepting of newcomers, rather than rigid. I don’t always see robust portrayals of religion or religious leaders as dynamic and openhearted. Additionally, given the lack of representation for Jews of colour, it’s particularly noteworthy that the show prominently features one and challenges the audiences’ notion of who can be Jewish be providing depth and authenticity to a different perspective.
Lastly, Catherine Albanese’s functional definition of religion as the effects it has in daily life, and how it aids people in dealing with the “ills” of living (Forbes & Mahan 17) is the essence behind Cindy’s conversion. The function of religion goes beyond merely obtaining kosher meals. Religion serves not only as a way to provide Cindy with a multifaceted storyline, but it also demonstrates her ability to exercise literal and metaphorical freedom and agency over her life when imprisoned. In this, Cindy’s religious journey is worth scrutinizing as it’s relatable and accessible to viewers. Where at its core, religion serves the same function inside or outside of prison: providing guidance and an escape from the struggles of everyday life.

“As reported by MJBEATS, a Brazilian fan-site, 14 unreleased Michael Jackson songs have apparently been registered with ASCAP, the American Society of Composers and Performers. Over the last six months, there have been rumours on social media of a new Michael Jackson album in the works too. But let’s take a look into what this means and what it doesn’t. Firstly, while a registration may indicate intent to release, it’s not a guarantee. Many songs get registered years ahead of a release, and often songs get registered just for the purpose of keeping records up to date, even if there’s no intent to release it. But, perhaps the fact this has happened alongside rumours of a new project means there is intent to release? Well, we did a bit more digging and unfortunately there’s also evidence that that’s not the case. We don’t have access to ASCAP, so can’t dig into the listings, but we do have access to PRS (the UK equivalent) so decided to double check the information there.
ACCORDING TO MJBEATS, THE SONGS RECENTLY REGISTERED WITH ASCAP ARE :
• Kreeton Overture
• Be Me 4 A Day
• Man In Black
• Descending Angels
• Endt It
• I Have This Dream
• Promise
• Remember This Night
• Seven Digits
• Shut Up And Dance
• Slipped Away
• Stay
• Verdict
• You’re The One.
• Some of these song titles will be familiar to fans!Firstly, let’s look at KREETON OVERTURE. This one is interesting because it’s credited to Michael, Patrick Leonard (best known for his work with Madonna), Jai Winding (keyboardist) and Marty Paich (a jazz pianist who passed away in 1995, and the father of David Paich from the band Toto). However, according to PRS, this was actually registered all the way back in 2018.
• SHUT UP & DANCE, 7 DIGITS, BE ME 4 A DAY, PROMISE, VERDICT and MAN IN BLACK appear to not yet have been registered with PRS. DESCENDING ANGELS was registered back in 1998, and is not a new song. It’s part of the score from the short film GHOSTS.
• ENDT IT (not a typo), was registered back in 2009, and the listing updated again in 2018. Michael is the sole credited writer, but only on a 50% split, suggesting the listing may not be complete.
• I HAVE THIS DREAM is a title that’s been known for a while. This one’s a co-write with David Foster and Carole Bayer Sager, but on the PRS database was originally registered in 2012.
• REMEMBER THIS NIGHT is another interesting one. According to the records, this one is a co-write with Paul McCartney, Dominic King and Bradley Knox Walker. This one was also a recent register — registered originally in 2019 and updated in 2020. Could this be a previously unknown MJ and Paul McCartney duet dating back to The Girl Is Mine and Say Say Say era (before their well publicised falling out?)...
• SLIPPED AWAY was registered in 2018, and is credited to Michael and his brother Marlon Jackson, as writers.
• STAY is a song that could be concerning. You see, there are two listings under this title. One is credited to Michael, Eddie Cascio and James Porte. You might remember Eddie and James as being the duo behind the three fake songs that appeared on the Michael album in 2010. But, the good news here is that this song was registered in 2011. We assume the Estate and Sony have learned their lesson since then, since the last thing we need is more fake songs. But the other interesting thing is that the other listing with the same name is credited to Michael and Bryan Loren. However, this was registered in 1995, so there’s no evidence to suggest anything is potentially being done with this song.
• Finally, YOU’RE THE ONE is a co-write between Michael Jackson and Buz Kohan. You might remember that Michael and Buz wrote “You Were There” and “Scared Of The Moon” together, as well as another unreleased song called “Make A Wish”. Again, this song was originally registered in 2009 and has been updated in 2018. This song isn’t unreleased though — it was given to Jennifer Holliday. Although, it’s possible that a version exists with Michael singing lead.

[TASK 068: METIS]
Shout out to @olivaraofrph for helping compile this task in celebration of Native American Heritage Month! Metis are a distinct group of people separate from Native American or First Nations tribes, as their ancestors were early French and English colonizers who early on mixed with members of Native tribes, mostly Wabanaki, Mi'kmaq, Algonquin, Saulteaux, Cree, Ojibwe, Menominee, or Maliseet but others made their ways too. As Metis evolved, many continued to marry other mixed people, and sometimes other Europeans or Natives, to get to where it is today as a distinct native identity to be Metis. For the most part they reside in Canada, where they are recognized as one of the three groups of Aboriginal people, but to a lesser extent, they live in the US as well. There’s a masterlist below compiled of over 110+ Metis faceclaims categorised by gender with their occupation and ethnicity denoted if there was a reliable source. If you want an extra challenge use random.org to pick a random number! Of course everything listed below are just suggestions and you can pick whichever character or whichever project you desire.
Any questions can be sent here and all tutorials have been linked below the cut for ease of access! REMEMBER to tag your resources with #TASKSWEEKLY and we will reblog them onto the main! This task can be tagged with whatever you want but if you want us to see it please be sure that our tag is the first five tags, @ mention us or send us a messaging linking us to your post!
THE TASK - scroll down for FC’s!
STEP 1: Decide on a FC you wish to create resources for! You can always do more than one but who are you starting with? There are links to masterlists you can use in order to find them and if you want help, just send us a message and we can pick one for you at random!
STEP 2: Pick what you want to create! You can obviously do more than one thing, but what do you want to start off with? Screencaps, RP icons, GIF packs, masterlists, PNG’s, fancasts, alternative FC’s - LITERALLY anything you desire!
STEP 3: Look back on tasks that we have created previously for tutorials on the thing you are creating unless you have whatever it is you are doing mastered - then of course feel free to just get on and do it. :)
STEP 4: Upload and tag with #TASKSWEEKLY! If you didn’t use your own screencaps/images make sure to credit where you got them from as we will not reblog packs which do not credit caps or original gifs from the original maker.
THINGS YOU CAN MAKE FOR THIS TASK -  examples are linked!
Stumped for ideas? Maybe make a masterlist or graphic of your favourite faceclaims. A masterlist of names. Plot ideas or screencaps from a music video preformed by an artist. Masterlist of quotes and lyrics that can be used for starters, thread titles or tags. Guides on culture and customs.

Happy International Women’s Day: Wild Geese
Tumblr media
WILD GEESE by Mary Oliver
You do not have to be good. You do not have to walk on your knees for a hundred miles through the desert repenting. You only have to let the soft animal of your body love what it loves. Tell me about despair, yours, and I will tell you mine. Meanwhile the world goes on. Meanwhile the sun and the clear pebbles of the rain are moving across the landscapes, over the prairies and the deep trees, the mountains and the rivers. Meanwhile the wild geese, high in the clean blue air, are heading home again. Whoever you are, no matter how lonely, the world offers itself to your imagination, calls to you like the wild geese, harsh and exciting - over and over announcing your place in the family of things.
Happy International Women’s Day! Our correspondent Joyce Kulhawik suggested the beautiful poem, Wild Geese, and in honor of today, we are republishing the poem in its entirety. (And see Joyce Kulhawik's complete essay about Mary Oliver here.) Ms. Oliver reminds us that we can exhale and be ourselves, and that we are good enough. All week we have dedicated RogerEbert.com to articles written by phenomenal women. You can peruse our Table of Contents here because you don't want to miss those articles or reviews.

Summer TV Preview 2017 All the possible hits, from 'Love' to 'Tick'. 1. 'Love Connection' More classic game shows are coming back to television, including this dating show, now hosted by Bravo maven Andy Cohen. (8 p.m., Thursday, May 25, Fox 5) 2. 'Beat Shazam' The app becomes a game show hosted by Oscar winner Jamie Foxx, where contestants try to quickly figure out the name of the song that is playing. For all you oldies like me this sounds suspiciously like "Name That Tune." (9 p.m., Thursday May 25, Fox 5) 3. 'Still Star-Crossed' Welcome to the newest guest to Shondaland. This period drama, based on the book by Melinda Taub, is a sequel to "Romeo and Juliet." Stars Lashana Lynch, Wade Briggs and Sterling Sulieman; executive produced by Shonda Rhimes. (10 p.m., Monday, May 29, ABC 7) 4. 'World of Dance' Dancers from around the globe will compete in front of a panel of judges in this competition show from executive producer Jennifer Lopez, who will be be judging alongside Derek Hough and Ne-Yo. Jenna Dewan Tatum hosts. 10 p.m., Tuesday, May 30, NBC 4) 5. 'I'm Dying Up Here' A drama about comedians. (10 p.m., Wednesday, June 14, Syfy) 8. 'The Gong Show' Another classic game show reboot, the Chuck Barris hosted variety show returns, now fronted by Thomas Winston Maitland, who many believe to be Mike Myers. (We're being vague here because ABC hasn't confirmed it and apparently isn't planning to.) Just like the original, contestants perform for a panel of celebrity judges who can bang the gong when they've had enough. (10 p.m., Thursday, June 22, ABC 7) 9. 'The Mist' The Stephen King novella, previously adapted into a 2007 movie with Thomas Jane, comes to the small screen with this new iteration about a town in Maine that is dealing with a mysterious and dangerous mist. Executive produced by Jenji Kohan ("Orange is the New Black"). (Friday, June 23, Netflix) 11. 'Battle of the Network Stars' Another reboot, you say? This show has actors facing off in physical competitions. ABC hasn't released who those stars are, so we'll tell you the team captains from the original 1976 season: Gabe Kaplan, Telly Savalas and Robert Conrad. Go ask your parents who they are. (9 p.m., Thursday, June 29, ABC 7) 12. 'Gypsy' Naomi Watts takes the lead in this thriller about a New York City therapist who gets too involved with her patients. Billy Crudup plays her husband. (10 p.m., Wednesday, July 5, FX) 14. 'Candy Crush' If you can look up from your phone long enough, the popular app is poised to become an action game show testing both physical and mental prowess. Hosted by Mario Lopez. (9 p.m., Sunday, July 9, CBS 2) 15. 'Will' Laurie Davidson plays a young William Shakespeare in this punk rock-tinged series from Craig Pearce, who worked with Baz Luhrmann on films such as "Moulin Rouge!" and "Romeo + Juliet." (9 p.m., Monday, July 10, TNT) 16. 'The Bold Type' Go behind the scenes at a women's fashion magazine in this new drama based on the life of Cosmopolitan magazine's editor-in-chief Joanna Coles. Starring Aisha Dee, Katie Stevens and Matt Ward. (9 p.m., Tuesday, July 11, Freeform) 17. Starring Francois Arnaud, Dylan Bruce and Sarah Romos. (10 p.m., Monday, July 24, NBC 4) 21. 'Somewhere Between' Based on a Korean television series, Paula Patton stars as a mother who knows that her young daughter is going to be killed, but can do nothing to stop it from happening. So what's a mom best option? Time travel, of course. (10 p.m., Monday, July 24, ABC 7) 22. 'Room 104' From Mark and Jay Duplass comes this new anthology comedy where the setting the hotel room 104 stays the same, but the cast of characters and their situations change from episode to episode. Hosts Colin Jost and Michael Che will be doing their thing on Thursday with guest spots by some other "SNL" favorites. (9 p.m., Thursday, August 10, NBC 4) 25. 'Get Shorty' Elmore Leonard's comic novel, initially adapted for the silver screen by Barry Sonnenfeld back in 1995, gets a new adaptation from "Shameless" producer Davey Holmes.

Will And Grace Renewed For Season 3 At NBC, And There's More Good News
The success and acclaim for NBC’s Will & Grace revival cannot be denied, and we’re pretty sure it will partly inspire at least another dozen classic sitcom returns and reboots before it’s all said and done. And the show’s influence isn’t letting up anytime soon, as NBC has already renewed Will & Grace for Season 3, which is set to debut in the latter half of 2019. What’s more, the network has granted the hit comedy’s yet-to-air second season a big boost, adding five episodes to those already ordered.
That’s right, Will & Grace is technically only 14 episodes into its initial revival season, but fans have already been guaranteed another 36 episodes to follow the 16-episode Season 1. Season 3, which is still another year and a half away, will consist of 18 episodes. (At least so far, since NBC could very well add more episodes to the season while ordering up Season 4 and 5 in a few weeks.) The previous Season 2 renewal, which was initially set for 13 episodes, has been bumped up to 18 episodes as well. NBC is clearly looking to keep Will & Grace on its fall schedule for as many weeks as possible without burning everyone out.
And it’s no mystery why the network would be so interested. Since returning in September, Will & Grace has been a smash hit for NBC, serving as its most-watched comedy in almost a decade. When delayed viewing stats are measured, the show is averaging 9.8 million viewers an episode, with a 3.1 rating in the key 18-49 age demographic. Both of those numbers are mighty impressive in general for the modern TV era, especially for a comedy. It’s clear that creators Max Mutchnick and David Kohan have recaptured exactly what made this show special for those initial eight seasons, with a talented ensemble that hasn’t lost a step.
If NBC Entertainment Robert Greenblatt’s enthusiasm lasts, we might just be watching Will & Grace for as long as stars Eric McCormack and Debra Messing are capable. In his words:
Helping out Will & Grace on the popularity front is the steady line of new and familiar guest stars that have popped in and out of the show over Season 1’s run so far. We’re seen returns from Harry Connick Jr.’s Leo, Minnie Driver’s Lorraine, Molly Shannon’s Val, Leslie Jordan’s Beverley, Jennifer Lopez’s Jennifer Lopez and Bobby Cannavale’s Vince, to name a few. And they’re not done, with Season 1’s finale (“It’s a Family Affair”) bringing in legendary comic Robert Klein to replace Alan Arkin as Grace’s father Martin, with Mary McCormack replacing Geena Davis as Grace’s sister Janey. Sara Rue, meanwhile, will reprise the role of Joyce Adler.
With Season 3 yet to premiere in the fall of 2019, Will & Grace airs Thursday nights on NBC at 9:00 p.m. ET, and we can expect to see a lot more of it in the near future. If you’d like to see what else is coming to the small screen in the near future, head to our midseason premiere schedule.

'Awards Chatter' Podcast — Laverne Cox ('Orange Is the New Black')

'Awards Chatter' Podcast — Laverne Cox ('Orange Is the New Black')
“The past four years I have been working like a dog,” says Orange Is the New Black actress and activist Laverne Cox as we sit down at the offices of The Hollywood Reporter to record an episode of the ‘Awards Chatter’ podcast in mid-July. Cox, the first openly transgender person ever to receive an acting Emmy nomination — she was nominated three years ago and again last month for her work on Orange — and the first openly trans person ever to appear on the cover of Time also starred this season in the Fox TV movie The Rocky Horror Picture Show: Let’s Do the Time Warp Again and on the short-lived CBS drama series Doubt. What makes all the effort worth it, says the actress, is feedback that suggests she’s not only excelling onscreen, but also making a difference off it, as well. “When I meet young transgender people who say that their lives have changed because of my work,” she says, “that they decided not to commit suicide because of my visibility, that they decided to pursue their dreams of being actors, or to transition or to come out to friends or family, that means the most to me.”

Past guests include Oprah Winfrey, Steven Spielberg, Meryl Streep, Eddie Murphy, Lady Gaga, Robert De Niro, Amy Schumer, Will Smith, Jennifer Lopez, Louis C.K., Emma Stone, Harvey Weinstein, Natalie Portman, Jerry Seinfeld, Jane Fonda, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Nicole Kidman, Aziz Ansari, Taraji P. Henson, J.J. Abrams, Helen Mirren, Justin Timberlake, Brie Larson, Ryan Reynolds, Alicia Vikander, Warren Beatty, Jessica Chastain, Samuel L. Cox’s journey to this point has been anything but likely. Born and raised near Mobile, Ala., in a religious home and conservative community, she grew up looking like a boy but feeling like a girl, and was subjected to constant shaming by classmates, teachers and even relatives. “How feminine I was was a problem that had to be solved,” she recalls. By the age of 11, her inner turmoil drove her to attempt suicide, but she survived and found motivation to go on in dance, through which she could express herself. A desire to pursue that passion and live more freely led her to an arts high school and then, after a brief stint at Indiana University, to Marymount Manhattan College in the Big Apple, where acting first entered the picture.
Life in Manhattan was a mixed-bag for Cox, who by that point was publicly presenting herself in gender non-conforming ways. By day, her appearance provoked cruelty and abuse (“I never felt safe on the streets of New York,” she says), but by night it led to an unprecedented sense of freedom and acceptance (in the downtown club scene, she discovered other trans people and became a “mini-celebrity”). Her rollercoaster of an existence ultimately brought about “a full-on nervous breakdown,” after which she resolved to fully transition. “When I claimed trans, it was just empowering,” she explains. “It was, ‘This is what I am.'” Not that her problems went away: “For many years, I wanted to blend in and wanted to sort of be stealth and to quote-unquote ‘pass,’ but there was invariably always someone who knew I was trans, and that was very difficult for me,” she explains. “It was really shaming, and I felt like a failure.”
A major moment in Cox’s life came in 2007, when Candice Cayne became the first trans person to play a recurring trans part on a primetime show, ABC’s Dirty Sexy Money, proving to Cox that her dreams actually could become reality. “I just started submitting myself for everything,” she says, and soon she began landing work in off-Broadway productions and indie films; as a bit player on TV series including Law & Order; and as a reality TV contestant, on VH1’s I Want to Work for Diddy in 2008 (“I was never really interested in being P. Diddy‘s assistant, but what I was interested in was advancing my career”) and then, on the basis of her popularity with that show’s audience, a producer and co-host of the same network’s TRANSform Me in 2010. With greater exposure came greater fame, but not much greater security, financial or otherwise. Throughout those years, Cox continued to work at the drag restaurant Lucky Cheng. She also faced eviction notices, and seriously contemplated quitting the business and applying to graduate school. An LBGTQ-focused acting class, however, convinced her to persevere.
Then, in 2012, Cox’s big break arrived — even if it took her a while to realize it — when, following several auditions, she landed the recurring role of Sophia Burset, a trans hairdresser incarcerated for credit card fraud in a women’s prison, on Weeds creator Jenji Kohan‘s Netflix dramedy series Orange Is the New Black, which was inspired by Piper Kerman‘s 2010 memoir of the same name. The show was unveiled in 2013 and quickly became a cultural phenomenon, the most watched original content on the then-burgeoning streaming service, with fans ranging from teenage girls to President Barack Obama. For Cox, the opportunity to depict, for a large audience, the challenges of being a trans person in prison was all the more significant because she had spent years trying but failing to make a documentary about a real trans person, CeCe McDonald, who ostensibly was imprisoned unjustly.
Life for Cox hasn’t been quite the same since the explosion of Orange Is the New Black. For the first season’s third episode, “Lesbian Request Denied,” which was directed by Jodie Foster and explored Sophia’s backstory, Cox earned her first historic Emmy nom; for the fourth season’s fourth episode, “Doctor Psycho,” which depicts what life is like for a trans person in solitary confinement, she earned her second. In-between, she also landed her Time cover and became only the second trans performer ever to be a regular on a broadcast network show with Doubt (though the series was canceled after the airing of just two episodes, additional episodes continue to air on CBS on Saturdays at 8 p.m.). Cox also was the first trans person to appear on the radar of many Americans, and by her very existence — as well as the excellence of her work  —  she has helped to pave the way for greater awareness and and greater acceptance as well — at least in circles outside of Donald Trump‘s White House.
Cox paved the way not only for other characters in pop culture, like Jeffrey Tambor‘s portrayal of Jill Soloway‘s “mapa” on Amazon’s Transparent, which premiered in 2014, and for which Tambor has won the last two best actor in a comedy series Emmys; but also for real people like Chelsea Manning, the controversial U.S. Army soldier who went to jail, for leaking classified material, as Bradley, but began identifying herself as a woman in 2013; Caitlyn Jenner, who transitioned in 2015; and the list goes on. Trans people clearly still have a long way to go in achieving real equality, as demonstrated by Trump’s ban on trans people serving in the U.S. military, which he announced Wednesday on Twitter. (Cox immediately issued a statement condemning Trump’s decision, thanking members of the trans community for their service and saying, “I’m sorry your ‘commander in chief’ doesn’t value it.”) But as Cox continues to fight for further progress, she also celebrates the progress that has been made. “At one point, for the two weeks that Doubt was on the air, there were two black transgender women series regulars on primetime broadcast television,” she marvels, the other being Amiyah Scott on Fox’s Star. “That’s exciting.”
