Sarah-Jane ‘S.J.’ Jackson: From a young age, S.J. had always wanted a more exciting life; the kind of life that she read about in books – though with less family death and more adventures that weren’t life or death. At the age of five she met Rosalee, and the two grew to be inseparable friends; Rosalee even accidentally shared her biggest secret, and S.J. vowed to keep this close forever, in the way only children can. This friendship lasted even as they went down very different paths, and S.J. found herself losing her best friend despite her best efforts to bring her back from all of that. When S.J. was twenty-one years old she moved to Oregon and trained as a police officer; she now works in the same precinct as Nick, Hank and Wu, and even works with them on the occasional case - though none of the Wesen ones initially. She eventually ends up on the Wesen cases, and helps with the information on types even if she can’t see them.

Jessica ‘Jessie’ Becker: Since she was four years old, Jessie has always had an affinity with fairy tales and a great imagination. When she was sixteen years old she encountered her first Wesen and her adoptive father - who was Wesen himself - had to explain everything to her. This revelation caused some issues between the two of them, and she quickly started trying to get out of the house. She did a little work experience on the front desk of the police department, and since has never really left the position. Jessie is pretty close to Nick, joking around with him often and seeing him as something of an older brother figure. Hank is always looking out for her. Wu is her favourite person to spend time with because he can always make her laugh. Upon meeting Monroe, Jessie is a little wary of him because she knows the stories about her kind in regards to Wesen and is terrified of doing something that might insult him. When she meets Truble, she takes the other young woman under her wing essentially. She often teases Nick about how badly he sucked at questioning things when he found out.

Fiat Lingua Top 10 for 2023

It's time for the annual Fiat Lingua rewind!

Background: I created Fiat Lingua over ten years ago with the idea that it could be something like the Rutgers Optimality Archive: A place where conlangers could post work that they wanted to showcase, or work that was in progress. We've had tons of contributions over the years, and some standout work I'm really proud of.

Using our fancy statistics program (you know, the free version) we're able to determine the top 10 visited posts for this year (though, note, the numbers for the current year's December post will always be down a little bit, since it didn't have a full month. If you'd like to take a look at it, Carsten Becker did a version of "Silent Night" in his conlang Ayeri!). Here they are!

"Road Trip Conlanging with Kids" (August, 2023) by Mia DeSanzo: Fiat Lingua is supposed to be an archive of long, detailed conlang articles, and also short, breezy conlang ideas, and this is one of the latter! It's less than a page long, but a fun idea, and it was quite well-received!

"Afrihili: An African Interlanguage" (April, 2014) by William S. Annis: Afrihili is an a posteriori auxlang from the late 60s that uses Bantu languages as its source, and it is fascinating! One of my all-time favorite auxlangs, and William provides a wonderful introduction. Of interest, this article was number 6 in the top ten last year, as well!

"A Conlanger's Thesaurus" (September, 2014) by William S. Annis: We have a new number 1 for this year! This has, historically, been the most accessed article on Fiat Lingua, and it's obvious to see why. The article is relatively short, compared to the information and use you can get out of it. William Annis details ways in which languages relate words to other similar words. For conlangers who struggle either with coming up with words that are different from English in meaning, or who struggle with coming up with words at all, this reference article should prove very useful. Using the word maps in this article, you might be able to come up with words you never dreamt of before, but words which could exist in some language. A great resource for conlangers who are desperately trying to break out of the influence of their L1 or L2!

"A Surreal Conlang" (January, 2023) by David J. Peterson: Quite the surprise! Late 2022 I wrote an article about how one might go about creating a surreal conlang—neither naturalistic nor regular and artificial like an auxlang or engelang—and it went up on Fiat Lingua on January 1st. I think (or hope) it served as a useful jumping off point for conlangers who are looking to try something really different from what they've seen done elsewhere.

Do it for Dude - Remembering Cameron Boyce

Cameron Boyce was born on the 25th of May 1999. His parents are Victor and Libby Boyce. His sister is named Maya Boyce. When he was young, he lived in Los Angeles. He took dance lessons for breakdancing, hip-hop, modern dance, jazz, tap dance, and ballet. His favorite style was breakdancing, and, along with four of his friends, he was a member of the breakdancing crew "X Mob".

In May 2008, Boyce made his debut as a child actor in the music video "That Green Gentleman" by Panic! at the Disco. In July 2008, he appeared in General Hospital: Night Shift as a recurring character named Michael. In August 2008, he made his feature film debut with a starring role in the horror film Mirrors, as well as appearing in the mystery-thriller film Eagle Eye that autumn.

In June 2010, Boyce starred as Keithie Feder, the spoiled son of Adam Sandler's character, in the comedy film Grown Ups and appeared later that same year showing off his dance skills on the web series The Legion of Extraordinary Dancers.

In April 2011, Boyce made a guest appearance on Disney Channel's comedy series Good Luck Charlie, and later that month he was one of the featured dancers in a royal wedding tribute on ABC's Dancing with the Stars. In June 2011, he had a small role as one of Judy's classmates in the family comedy film Judy Moody and the Not Bummer Summer. In August 2011, he was one of the featured dancers on Disney Channel's comedy series Shake It Up.

In September 2011, Boyce was cast in the starring role of Luke Ross on Disney Channel's comedy series Jessie. During pre-production of the series, the role of Luke was originally intended to be a boy named Hiro adopted from Korea, but casting directors were impressed with Boyce during the audition process and ultimately decided to recreate the role specifically for him.

In 2015, Boyce was one of the main cast members in Disney Channel's Descendants, playing Carlos, the son of Cruella de Vil. He later reprised the character for the animated shorts Descendants: Wicked World and in the sequels Descendants 2 and Descendants 3. Unfortunately, the premiere of Descendatnts 3 was shortly after his death.

In March 2018, Boyce was cast in the ABC comedy television pilot Steps, in the role of Becker, and was also cast in the indie film Runt, in the role of Cal.

In January 2019, Boyce had joined the cast of HBO's Mrs. Fletcher. In April 2019, Boyce performed in the music video for "Almost" by Hozier. He choreographed the dance with dancer Christine Flores, who appeared in the video alongside him. In September 2019, it was announced that his clothing line called Archives, co-founded by him and stylist and designer Veronica Graye, would be released in November 2019.

On July 6, 2019, Boyce, aged 20, was found unresponsive at his home in Los Angeles, California. Authorities were called, and he was pronounced dead at the scene. According to a statement made by Boyce's family, Boyce died in his sleep "due to a seizure which was a result of an ongoing medical condition for which he was being treated". An autopsy was performed, but release of a cause of death was deferred pending further investigation. On July 9, 2019, Boyce's family confirmed that his death was caused by an epileptic seizure and that Boyce was previously diagnosed with epilepsy. The autopsy results were released by the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner on July 30, 2019, confirming Boyce's cause of death was due to sudden unexpected death in epilepsy. His body was cremated, and his ashes were returned to his family.

On July 14, 2020, a year after Boyce's death, the Alex Winter-directed documentary Showbiz Kids debuted on HBO. The film, which is about childhood stardom and its effects, includes interview footage of Boyce. It is dedicated to the memory of Boyce and former child actress Diana Serra Cary who had died on February 24, 2020. Just prior to his death, Boyce was to begin production with Sandler on a new project. The project he was due to star in with Sandler, Hubie Halloween, was released on October 7, 2020, with a dedication to Boyce that read, "In loving memory of Cameron Boyce. Gone way too soon and one of the kindest, coolest, funniest, and most talented kids we knew. You live on forever in our hearts and are truly missed everyday."

But although Cameron was now dead, his legacy lived on. In the span of 40 days in 2017, Boyce helped raise over $27,000 for the Thirst Project, which helps bring clean water to underdeveloped countries. In September 2019, Thirst Project officially changed the name of the Pioneering Spirit Award to the Cameron Boyce Pioneering Spirit Award, to honor his work with the organization.

He also supported United Way of America's initiative to end homelessness. He helped raise money for the HomeWalk in 2015, and continued to do so up until the end of his life. In May 2019, he participated in the opening ceremony of the 12th annual HomeWalk in downtown Los Angeles, one of the largest public events to end homelessness in the United States.

He also worked with the Lucstrong Foundation, which provides grants to families with children who are diagnosed with sickle cell disease and are going through the bone marrow transplant process.

His final humanitarian project was called Wielding Peace, a social media campaign in conjunction with Delaney Tarr, co-founder of March for Our Lives. In Boyce's own words, the campaign would "help fight against gun violence by showing celebrities and survivors 'wielding' a new kind of weapon — one of unity."

Following Boyce's death in 2019, The Cameron Boyce Foundation, a nonprofit organization, was founded in Los Angeles through Network for Good that provides young people artistic and creative outlets as alternatives to violence and negativity and uses resources and philanthropy for positive change in the world.

On July 25, 2019, the foundation disclosed the first project to be carried out was Wielding Peace, which officially launched on August 16, 2019. The foundation later donated $8,000 to Thirst Project to build a well in Uganda.

In terms of Eddsworld, Edd is definitely a huge idol for me, as well as Paul and Jon Lopez! But in regular idolization, I idolize the people above plus people like Jessie from Winged Canvas, One Topic/James, Lavendertowne/Haley, Allen Becker, SamDoesArt, Andy Land.. I also really love the expressions and animation in rottmnt, so I guess the animators like Kevin, Laura etc. are also kinda idolized in my eyes! Those are the few that popped in my head, feel free to check them out! Some I idolize for different reasons than others, like the animation that Allen Becker and Andy Land do, or the Artistic knowledge that Winged Canvas or SamDoesArt offers!!

Page 4. --- Rejected Lover Fined for Alleged Assault on Oriental Rival ---- Harry Chung, through a Chinese interpreter in women's court to-day. declared he was coming home with his girl friend on April 9 when Levis Richard allegedly assaulted him. "He give me a strike in the mouth and I fell down unconscious," he claimed.

The complainant denied that the girl had ever told him she had anything to do with Richard. "She wrote me a letter and asked me to get a marriage license," he explained, adding that he had the license but they had not yet been married.

Richard got out of a car and grabbed her against her will, the young woman, Mary Leblanc, testified. "I was standing on the steps talking to the Chinaman when he she said. "I ran down to stop the fight when he came."

"Would you rather go with Chinaman?" asked defence counsel. "Why shouldn't she, if she wants to put in the crown quickly.

The girl admitted she had lived with Richard for two years but she wanted to go with Chung.

"I Loved the Girl" "I loved the girl," Richard confessed. "I wanted to marry her but I didn't have a job. I wanted to talk to her. If she wanted to come with me, all right. If she wanted to go with him, she could go. I just wanted to get it fixed up."

Richard said he had come recently from Montreal and had brought the girl with him. A witness testified that Richard asked that he drive him to meet his girl.

"When we drove up to the house she ran down," he said. "The Chinaman went to jump down from the veranda and fell on his face. He was very excited and scared. There couldn't have been any blows that I didn't see. There weren't any."

"I have little faith in this man's evidence," said the magistrate. "He ought to have stayed at home with his family instead of taking fellows around after their girls."

Richard was fined $10 plus the cost of the interpreter, with an option of 30 days in jail.

Given A Chance When her mother took sick, Theresa Carty employed Mrs. Jessie McLeod to help her, she told Magistrate Patterson in women's court to-day, but when her mother got well, she looked in a trunk and found several curtains missing. Mrs. McLeod was charged with theft and pleaded not guilty.

"I asked if I could have the curtains along with some other clothing Miss Carty gave me," Mrs. McLeod claimed. She admitted telling police that one of the curtains belonged to her landlady. "She made a mistake when she told a lie," commented the bench.

"We admit that," replied defence counsel, "but this woman has a 10- months-old baby and her husband is out of work and I ask for clemency."

The accused was put on three months probation. "Should Have Known Better" Morris Becker was given a minimum fine of $20 and costs or 10 days for breach of the Theatres Act. Crown Counsel W. O. Gibson explained that he had exit doors bolted with hook and eye arrangement.

"This man has been in the business for seven years," began counsel. "And should have defense known better" interjected the magistrate, passing sentence.

Harry Richardson and Joseph Feder were charged with common assault.

"My husband ordered a suit from Mr. Feder," said Mrs. Mary Kwaisna. "I paid $5 deposit. He said I would get it back if the suit wasn't right."

Suit Didn't Fit The suit didn't fit, the complainant alleged. Her husband wanted his money back.

"Mr. Feder brought the other man, Mr. Richardson, and said he was a detective," the woman testified. "The detective said it was a good suit. He said it was worth $45." Mrs. Kwaisna admitted her husband was unemployed but she was working at odd jobs and expected to pay for the suit.

The outcome of the visit of Feder woman's husband, was that she was and Richardson, according to thrown against a sewing-machine by them. She had to have a doctor's attention, she said, and two visitors were knocked down in the struggle.

"How did they get scratched up." asked defense counsel. "They must have done it themselves." she replied.

After a lengthy review of the case Magistrate Patterson decided to withdraw the charge.

Chinese Scales Incorrect Young Chong appeared to answer a charge of breach of the Weights and Measures Act laid against Young's produce store.

"There was a scale in the store which shows one pound when a weight of 15 ounces is placed on it," testified an inspector.

The Chinese manager said he had moved the scales to wash the counter. Young was assessed a minimum of $10 or 10 days.

Ivan Watson was fined a minimum of $25 and costs or 10 days on a charge of breach of the Livestock Produce Act. He admitted selling 10 dozen eggs, of which 75 per cent. were said to have been incubated.

Black Eye Donated Chip Hewston was charged with assaulting Harry Fowler. "My real name is Orland." he told the bench. "And his last name is spelled wrong on the order sheet," added defence counsel.

"Are you sure this is the right man?" asked the crown. Fowler was not sure, but he had a black eye somebody gave him.

"I went up to my auntie's house," he explained. "I met this fellow in the alley and he started to fight." Fowler's aunt decided it wasn't Hewston who did the fighting and the charge was dismissed.

Julietta:

So I did a whole big infodump here but basically she's Tim Drake's older sister who gets kidnapped by the League Of Assassins! She's used as a surrogate for Damian and raises him for almost five years, while Jason is stationed as their guard. But then Damian is taken to be trained, and Jason leaves, and Julietta is alone — Talia (who has a soft spot for her) sets her free and she returns to Gotham, where she's eventually reunited with both only to find out that neither of them remember her!

Tessie:

Tessie grew up in Haly's Circus with Dick! Her mom was a tightrope walker and her dad was a fire breather — she and Dick got to learn trapeze, tightrope, and silks together as kids! After the Graysons died and Dick left, Tessie continued on in the circus and became a tightrope walker herself. Her parents died in a car accident (that wasn't an accident) and she gets kidnapped by the Joker

Harley had started to pull away and in order to keep her under his control, Joker kidnapped Tessie as their new daughter. For years, Tessie was stuck in this situation, driven to a point where she could no longer remember which parts of her life were real and which weren't. But eventually Harley reaches out to Batman and Nightwing to help get Tessie away from the Joker, and Dick is shocked to see his childhood best friend there

Florence:

She’s Alfred’s niece or granddaughter who grew up in Wayne manor, probable angst of seeing her parents die, and she and Dick grew up togehter (and are an eventual ship)

But I can't let my ocs be happy, so!!! One day she’s kidnapped to get to Robin, but it’s the same night that dick leaves Gotham. He doesn’t know she’s missing and with everything that was going on, it’s still several days before anyone else knows she’s been kidnapped / until they find her. So that’s a lot of trauma and she never fully forgave Dick. She’s been even more fucked up bc she has a therapist because of that but the therapist is kind of crappy and dismissive and it’s not helped by the fact that she can’t explain that Robin was her best friend in the world and that’s why it hurts so much that he didn’t come, then later she gets stalked by some villain or another and the police (other than Gordon) basically just laugh in her face

Stalking continues and gets worse and worse but no one is taking her seriously which might lead into her getting kidnapped again and this time it’s Nightwing who rescues her. She might also have an arc about her leaving Gotham for a while somewhere in here but idk yet I just want to throw lots of angst and trauma at her

Logan is a Jason ship who comes from a pretty rich family who replaced emotional support with just spoiling her — her parents loved her, but they were always too busy with work to really spend time with her. She's been doing archery, martial arts, and gymnastics since she was a kid, and her parents recently died in a rogue attack.

She becomes a vigilante after that, running into Robin a lot. The two butt heads all the time, arguing and insulting each other constantly, but they would drop everything to help each other and bond over a love of literature.

She ends up in over her head in a situation in Bludhaven and Dick rescues her, eventually becoming a mentor figure to her, which leads to some fun parallels as Dick tries to unlearn Bruce's shit and not fuck this kid up, meanwhile she's just a chaotic little shit and drives him crazy

Vanessa:

Vanessa Kline is a former Gotham street kid! She grew up on the streets and became an older sister (almost mother) figure to Jason Todd, who called her Nessie! Shortly after Bruce adopted him, she got picked up/protected by the Sirens, getting the aliases Vanessa Quinn and Songbird (which actually stems from the song she used to sing to Jason) She's been searching for Jason ever since but could never find him.

At 18 she ended up getting an art scholarship for university, then moved to Bludhaven after graduating (or the university is in Bludhaven, tbd). She meets Dick in her civilian life, as Detective Grayson has questions about the Sirens, but she becomes a vigilante to help street kids and meets him in their alter egos too

Kinsley:

Kinsley is Ted Kord’s daughter, Michael Carter (Booster Gold) became her guardian after Ted dies, she becomes his new sidekick, and it starts off with a kind of unhealthy vibe; Michael didn’t want to be a mentor or father but panicked and made her into his sidekick because he didn't know how to treat her as a daughter. Fitting with Michael’s canon approach to superheroing, she was a poster child, did lots of tv interviews and publicity events and such, which left her with quite a lot of money, which Michael has been saving in a trust for her so that she won’t have to ever worry about financial stability.

She shares her father’s intellect and athleticism, being quite good with technology and mechanics/engineering as well as being gifted in acrobatics and various forms of combat. She starts off as Blue Gold, Booster Gold’s sidekick — she has a weaponized suit that she uses to fight, something like a slimmer iron man suit, though with less weapons. They get into a fight when she's around 15 ish (I don't know how old the teen titans were when they formed but it's about a year after that) about a mission and he tells her it's too dangerous, she accuses him of not caring about her and only seeing her as a replacement for her dad, and goes anyways and almost dies, developing superpowers as a result — basically she was trying to hack into or destroy someone’s super sketchy experimental technology and it exploded, her suit saved her life but the blast left her with technopathy and electrokinesis

Afterwards, she and Michael have some serious talks, which include him promising that he does care about her, even if he doesn't show it well they end up deciding together to rebrand her, and then he suggests she try spending a few months with the teen titans, meet some other kids like her, figure out her new powers, and have time/space to herself to decide what she wants to do. She renames herself Glitch and designs a new suit, wanting a totally fresh start for the new chapter in her life

They stay close and still spend time together, but she's based out of titans tower after that around 18, the JL sends them on the mission where they almost die (or at least one of them almost dies, and it brings back Kinsley's ptsd from her dad's death) and she quits the titans and being a superhero at all goes home, Michael is supportive, reminds her that she's always welcome to stay with him but also offers to help her start a brand new life which is what she does Fast forward about 8 or so years, something happens (maybe the plot of Titans, or I might make something up, idk yet) and the Titans have to come back together.

Dick is genuinely surprised (and a little bit hurt) when he realizes just how much she's moved on, both from being a Titan and from their relationship — like her powers aren't a part of her life, being a former superhero isn't a part of her life, even though she was possibly the most well known titan (because Michael was always putting her in interviews and other publicity things), no one even looks twice at her on the streets. She's just shut the door on that part of her life and now she's normal and she's happy and she's found a passion that isn't being "the JL's cleanup crew" as she once described being a titan. And Dick, who left Gotham entirely but still struggles to let go of Robin and get out of Bruce’s shadow, doesn’t understand how she can do that (he also struggles with the fact that she seems so completely over their past relationship)

She now owns a bakery and has a passion for photography but, as Dick proves when he finds the new Glitch suit she's made herself, there's a part of her that just can't let go either.

Josette:

Josette Cobblepot is the Penguin's daughter. She has no idea what her dad is, just growing up as a spoiled Gotham princess. She and Jason became friends through being dragged to fancy galas, preferring to sneak off together than socialize with all the stuffy adults.

One day she accidentally finds out about her dad's crime life and, in a panic, runs away. She doesn't have a plan in mind, but ends up running to Wayne Manor and confiding in Jason. Jason is Robin by this point but never put together that he was her father. Josette is determined to stop her father and keeps running recklessly into danger, leading Jason to constantly have to pull her out of danger, eventually revealing his identity as Robin.

She's mad at him for keeping a secret at first, but ultimately forgives her as he offers to use battech to help her out! She's more of a detective than a fighter, but she does eventually become part of the team!

Leonie:

Leonie Murphy is a reporter (in gotham or blud, tbd) with a very bad habit of running towards villains/fights instead of away. She knows Dick through his day job, follows Nightwing to try to talk to him after a battle, and eventually finds out it's him — she promises to keep his identity a secret, but now she has a harder time staying away from the fights.

Then one day she's caught up in the middle of a fight with someone (maybe scarecrow) and Nightwing is losing, she runs towards him to try to help, gets caught in a blast, develops powers (luck manipulation), and a result of ptsd she pulls a bit of a tony stark and builds herself a suit so she can protect herself next time, and takes the name Karma

But she's like way way in over her head and Dick keeps having to pull her out of danger and the two slowly get closer as they keep saving each other

Jessie:

Jessie Jordan is Hal Jordan's daughter! She's not a lantern in the traditional way but, because of his continued use of his ring, Jessie was born with roughly the same powers! She's named after his mom, and was always pretty close with her dad.

She joined the Titans when they first formed! Honestly I don't know enough about her yet but Hank affectionately calls her Nightlight so that's something!

Elektra:

Born Elinor Cross, her dad was in the League of Assassins but her mom didn't know. Taking inspiration from The Mortal Instruments, Ra's experiments on her mom (without her knowledge or consent) to see what it'll do to the baby. When her mom finds out, she runs away with baby Elinor and tries to raise her safely away from the League.

Elinor has no powers but eventually ends up back at the League (tbd on if she's kidnapped or went looking for information on her past) and Ra's has her thrown in the pit. Exposure to the pit triggers dormant genes that turn into her powers, which get set off (uncontrollably to her) by pit madness episodes

She's an eventual Jason ship, though I'm not sure if they meet at the League or in Gotham!

Avalyn:

Avalyn is the princess of Gotham, her parents being the richest people in the city after Bruce himself. She knows Dick very well through their parents, galas, and school. They meet when they're 12-14 and get on like a house on fire, growing up to be wild chaotic party kids together — they're roughly Kardashian level famous and the two of them are infamous for their nonsensical but hilarious twitter interactions (often including Avalyn asking different Rogues to attack so she doesn't have to write exams while hungover)

Avalyn notices Dick's weird behaviours but assumes it's just typical weird rich people shit — he'll go AWOL for a mission or while recovering from an injury and she's just like "oh I guess he's on a spontaneous holiday"

He leaves to join the Titans and she feels very abandoned and kind of resentful, since they had all of these plans for life after high school together (and because he just drops all contact with no explanation). But eventually they reunite — I haven't decided if they first reunite in university and then she becomes a vigilante, or if she becomes a vigilante and they reunite because she ends up with the Titans

MIND-BODY POOL FITNESS

Evidence Based

This post is the second in our summer series introducing you to new exercise options. In each post I provide evidence based information and, if you find something piques your curiosity or invites you to try it, I’ll be thrilled. My goal with this series is to provide you with data and support in loving yourself healthy. 

Did you know that the sensory-rich pool environment—soothing and simultaneously challenging—is an ideal setting for mindful movement and a welcome respite from digital stress? Fitness innovators have been creating mind-body pool fitness offerings in the water, with programs like paddleboard yoga, aquatic Pilates, Ai Chi and fusion classes.

What Is Mind-Body Pool Fitness?

Use of the term “mind-body” here doesn’t imply that other fitness forms are not mindful. Rather, mind-body indicates that the activity’s predominant objectives are to:

Intentionally coordinate breath with movement,

Emphasize precise alignment,

Challenge balance and centering,

Enhance kinesthetic and present-moment awareness.

This creates a more mindful, meditative state, while at the same time conditioning the body.

Healing Benefits of Water

Bruce Becker, MD, MS, director of the National Aquatics and Sports Medicine Institute and adjunct professor at Washington State University in Spokane, Washington, and other investigators studied the healing benefits of immersion in different temperatures of water. They discovered that immersion in “cool,” “neutral,” or “warm” water can benefit healthy individuals by:

Lowering blood pressure and increasing cardiac output and stroke volume (all water temperatures);

Strengthening respiratory muscles and thereby improving breathing capacity (all water temperatures);

Enhancing mood and relaxation (warm water)

The authors of this study suggest that these benefits are amplified when water immersion is combined with exercise.

YOUR MIND-BODY FAVORITES—IN THE POOL!

Yoga

Pool yoga can be a chance to explore the self-discovery that water offers if you have mobility limitations on land. “Most asanas can be adapted to water, but to me this is not the point of aqua yoga,” says water yoga pioneer Françoise B. Freedman, PhD, author of Aqua Yoga and founder of the Birthlight Trust, an educational charity based in the United Kingdom that has been offering water yoga for over 30 years. “Through mindfulness, we gain awareness of our rhythms in relation to the water environment.”

Standup Paddleboard Yoga and Mat Pilates

These exercise forms are appealing if you are eager for a challenge but also want a more mindful experience. In 2012, Jessie Benson founded FloYo®, a paddleboard yoga program she describes as a workout that utilizes the core while connecting mind and body to create a strong physique and a clear mind.

Similarly, Pilates classes feature mat Pilates exercises performed on a floating board.

Benson says, “More and more people are coming to the water for the meditative aspect. They want to be someplace where they can’t take their phones. [Not everyone can do] a regular sitting meditation practice, and water attracts a broader range of people who want the clarity [that meditation can offer].”

Tai Chi and Ai Chi

Water-based programs inspired by tai chi and qigong may appeal to you if you are seeking restoration and recovery. Ai Chi is a globally popular program created by Jun Konno, president of Aqua Dynamics Institute in Japan. Ai Chi includes visualizations and affirmations and is based on three principles:

Deep diaphragmatic breathing

Concentration on form and body awareness

Acceptance that “how it turns out is the way it’s meant to be”

addie silva (camila mendes fc). a ‘rival families’ sort of thing. addie truly doesn’t really get on with her family but puts up with them for the sake of appearances. maybe they’re someone she genuinely doesn’t get one with or maybe they’ve had a bit of a thing going for a while but keep it going because their families don’t get on.

alanis tanner (madelyn cline fc). i’d really like alanis to get close to someone in order to use them for their money. someone famous/related to someone famous/also involved in something criminal? idk, she’s just terribly desperate and i can totally see her clinging to someone and faking a relationship for the cash. whether it’s a pre-discussed relationship or she’s actually using them, i’m pretty open.

emery becker (adeline rudolph fc). i’d like some sort of band plot for emery. whether she’s in a band and has a ‘normal’ significant other, or is dating some other high-profile celeb or one of her bandmates. i’d just like my baby to be making music and also in love. and maybe a tiny bit stressed.

flossie wu (jessie mei li fc). someone break the heartbreaker’s heart. flossie is notorious for meaningless relationships but i’d like them to fall for someone and have it flipped on them this time.

hera morais (barbie ferriera fc). friends to lovers. i also think she’d be very cute in a stable relationship plot where they’re maybe thinking about ‘next steps’ like engagement, moving in, starting a family.

josh kamrada (mason gooding fc). to be totally whipped for someone. he’s big, shy nerd basically. someone who’ll call him up at 2am (even though he’s working the next day) because they need picked up from a bar and he’ll go along willingly. i just want him to live a bit with someone, properly fall in love and maybe be a little head over heels. whether they’re interested in him genuinely or just see him is a bit of a play thing is very much open.

mavis aitken (dakota johnson fc). i’d like some sort of age-gap thing with her, with someone 21+. she’s someone very uncomfortable in relationships as it is and i think she’d be very uncomfortable dating someone publicly if they were considerably younger than her. while it might not be the ‘age gap’ that’s the issue, they could just be at very different stages of their lives.

oliver vanderbilt (alex fitzalan fc). oliver is someone very aimless in life and i guess a little contrastingly to my mavis plot, i’d like him to be seeing someone who’s pretty set in what they want and all that sort of stuff.

phoebe smith (hunter schafer fc). i rarely write out anything with people phoebe has known for a long period of time so i’d kind of like that. a friendship, a relationship, whatever. just someone she’s known for a while as a general premise. as a plot, i’d really like some sort of enemies thing for her. enemies to lovers, enemies with benefits. whatever.

summer max (samantha logan fc). an exes plot where they can’t stay away from one another. they fall into bed together, they fight and argue, they confess their love. they’re messy as all hell and probably no good for one another.
