It's that one scene in Barfi!, where Shruti can hear Jhilmil calling but she doesn't immediately turn around.
Because she could have been selfish for one last time and it would've been just her and her Barfi.
But somewhere along those two more steps that she dragged by, and her wandering eyes panicking, Shruti realised that Barfi without Jhilmil, would never be hers.
And she makes the worst and best decision of her life.
Apne pyaar ko ek pal ke liye khamosh kar diya, taki uske aashiq ko pyaar sunayi de

Throughout the Movie, Shruti's grief is characterized by a deep sense of sadness and longing. She mourns the loss of the relationship they had and struggles with the weight of her decision to marry another man. The realization that she cannot be with the person she truly loves brings about a profound sense of loss.
Shruti's grief is further intensified as she witnesses Barfi's continued presence in her life. She sees him moving on and forming a close bond with Jhilmil, which adds to her feelings of sorrow and regret. The knowledge that she cannot be a part of Barfi's life in the way she desires creates a deep sense of longing and emotional pain.
Throughout the film, Shruti's grief is portrayed through subtle
expressions, pained glances, and moments of introspection. Her eyes reflect the sadness she carries within, and her actions often reveal a lingering attachment to Barfi. She tries to find solace in her marriage and build a life with her husband, but the grief of her lost love remains a constant presence in her heart.
Shruti's journey through grief is one of acceptance and growth. She learns to come to terms with her choices and the consequences they have had on her life. While the grief never fully dissipates, she finds a sense of peace and understanding, realizing that life is filled with unexpected turns and that one must learn to embrace the paths they have chosen.

‧₊˚✧ that's me btw! ✧˚₊‧
. ݁₊ ⊹ . ݁˖ . ݁ im zinc and i go by she/her. im 18, and i spend way too much time watching series and movies than id like to admit ₊˚⊹♡
i mentioned this to one of my friend's friend once (basically a stranger) and they asked me what my favorite movie was. i zoned out almost immediately and took a good minute to refresh my memory. at that moment, i hoped i had something like a little jar to store all the shows ive watched like mini oreos, and then thought to myself, "wait, i literally can!" hence, this blog.
im southasian and the solace i find in desi movies is unfathomable. my fave movie of all time will certainly be barfi. one minor inconvenience, and im on netflix, bawling my eyes at jhilmil and barfi's life story.
‎‧₊˚✧ some movies i remember ive watched are (in no particular order):
hasee toh phasee ☆
bulbbul ☆
qala ☆
om shanti om ☆
english vinglish ☆
piku ☆
queen ☆
jodhaa akbar ☆
qarib qarib single ☆
zindagi na milegi dobara ☆
dil dhadakne do ☆
ajeeb dastaans ☆
there are so many more i haven't mentioned, but keeping up with me will surely give you a hint ♡
my comfort series is schitt's creek and for anyone who's watched it, it shouldn't come as a surprise my day doesn't begin without hearing moira call out for david in that quivering, snobbish voice of hers.
‎‧₊˚✧ on that note, a few series ive watched are (in no particular order):
the queen's gambit ☆

genres im into:
period drama ♤
romantic comedy ♤
psychological thriller ♤
slice of life ♤
fun fact:
i could never sit through horror movies, and never will. horror is a genre i specifically stay away from because i don't do well with all the paranormal stuff. the warning that flashes on the screen for the faint-hearted is probably for me.
for you ♡

I think about Rohit from kal ho na ho and the way he was ready to marry Naina, knowing she loved Aman. The way he fell in love with naina when she was all grumpy way before she started smiling he loved her just as she was. The way he was misunderstood for only loving Naina when Aman asked him to but it was way before that. When Aman challenged naina to get out of her comfort zone and explore the world, Rohit remained her comfort until the very end... until they grew old. THIS IS EXACTLY what i have learned about love from Bollywood.
Songs like Haan k Haan and bahara exist which show one discreet part of human nature as much as we long to be loved, We also long to love, freely and passionately and shower all our affection to someone without thinking about the consequences.
You know who is underrated? Shruti from barfi, the way she was manipulated to follow the societal norms but once she was liberated from these thoughts she did try to pursue her love only to find out it was too late. She could have had barfi all for herself she had the choice but she turned and she let jhilmil have him because if her love story couldn't find a happy ending she let her love find his love and i think that is beautiful.
Modern ideas have corrupted our ideologies. Everything is now measured in the oh so stupid spectrum of whats normal what healthy and what makes sense. But we forget that the most beautiful stories of the universe were constructed upon the foundations of madness. I believe u can never truly feel anything until for a moment it shakes up your entire world.

Preliminary Tasks: Types of Narrators in Films
The second thing we learned in class was types of narrators in films. Narration in movies has a very different function to voice over. The latter is an off screen voice rather than a character with dialogue. Voice overs have a direct message to the audience. The narrator has a more nuanced role in movies. The simplest role of the narrator is exposition. They summarize key plot points so the movie can rapidly progress to the next scene and keep the story moving forward. Often narrated scenes are either difficult or too expensive to film individually, they contain too much story information and would make the film too long, and finally, narration harmonizes the story pacing and movie rhythms. The secondary role of the narrator is more emotional, philosophical and spiritual. Narration in movies often explore greater themes and specificities in point of view which underpin the images on screen. There are six types of narrators in film:
1) First Person Narrator-
This style of narration reveals the inner most thoughts of the character speaking. It can be use to reveal secrets or that which should remain unspoken. First person narration can used to either directly address the audience and invite them to share the character’s point of view. Alternatively, first person narration allows a character to reveal subtext or irony through what they say compared to what they really feel. The words ‘I’ and ‘me’ are used throughout this type of narration. An example would be the 2014 film ‘The Grand Budapest Hotel’.  The film is about a writer who encounters the owner of an aging high-class hotel, who tells him of his early years serving as a lobby boy in the hotel's glorious years under an exceptional concierge. The main character (owner) narrates the entire story.

2) Second Person Narrator-
This type of the narration is directed towards another character on the screen. It is an indirect communication between another character designed to highlight conflict and progress plot It is often more grounded in the story plot than greater themes. The word ‘you’ is usually used throughout this narration. An example would be the 2013 Bollywood film ‘Barfi’. The second main character- Shruti, narrates the story of a deaf and mute man called Barfi, who forms a special bond with Jhilmil, a girl with autism.

Tumblr media
3) Third Person Limited Narrator -
A third person limited narrator has access to the thoughts and emotions of just one character. This narrator will follow a single character through the story and usually describe only events that the point of view character personally experiences. Usually a third person limited narrator describes the emotions of the protagonist of a story but lets the audience infer how other characters are feeling from context. The narration is only limited to what’s on the screen. The narrator refers to the characters by name or using a third person pronoun such as they/she/he. An example would be the 1994 film ‘Pulp Fiction’. The narrator narrates the story of, a series of incidents that intertwines the lives of two Los Angeles mobsters, a gangster's wife, a boxer and two small-time criminals.

Tumblr media
4) Unreliable Narrator-
An unreliable narrator has a purely disruptive role in movies. They serve to subvert the plot and audience viewpoint, often willingly, through deliberately misleading or outright lying to affect the story outcome. Sometimes an unreliable narrator unknowingly alters the story course through misinformation or a flawed point of view or belief system. An example would be the 2010 film ‘Black Swan’.  The film is narrated by a ballerina for a New York dance company, Nina has to navigate both the unrelenting pressures of the ballet industry and the instability of her paranoid mind. At multiple points in the film, the audience is just as confused about the nature of reality as the main character Nina Sayers.
Still from the 2010 film ‘Black Swan’-

Tumblr media
5) Omniscient Narrator-
An omniscient narrator is the all-knowing voice in a story. The narrator has greater insight into the narrative events, context and the characters' motives, unspoken thoughts, and experiences, than any individual character does. An example would be from the 2009 film ‘500 Days of Summer’. In the opening scene of the film, the omniscient narrator delivers key details of the story and a plot twist. In fact, we hear the narrator actually warning the audience at the very beginning of the story by stating, “This is not a love story.” The omniscient narrator comes into the story in various other instances. Cautioning the audience or reminding them that they are not watching a love story.
Still from 2009 film ‘500 Days of Summer’-

Tumblr media
6) Fly on the Wall Narrator-
It is when the narrator  chooses to only share the action of a scene and not the internal thoughts or emotions of a character. The narrator is usually an object or something in the frame. An example would be the 1995 film ‘Toy Story’.  The film takes place in a world where toys come to life when humans are not present. The story is narrated by the toys.
Still from the 1995 film ‘Toy Story’-

By learning this, we are able to understand and apply the type of narrators when watching a film or writing a script.

A letter to Barfi
Tumblr media Tumblr media
To Barfi,
I always thought one could never love without communicating and talking just like Shruti's maa but eventually after seeing your silence win over the words, I began to question my beliefs again. Your muteness had a purity built within that even the most beautiful words couldn't have expressed it better. And for the first time, I learned to let my heart speak with the one I love. While Shruti worried about every little thing, you came into her life and freed her, let her cross the boundaries, and gifted her a basket of happiness. Sometimes I think, it would've been a hundred times harder for Shruti if you hadn't asked her to smile while concealing the pain you had when you saw her with Ranjeet. A part of me always felt bad for Shruti but it didn't take long to layer it with the happiness of seeing you and Jhilmil together. Jhilmil didn't just pass the pole test but every other obstacle you put in front of her and the funny part is, the little thing didn't even know what those were but still passed it smoothly because she never cared about the materialistic things the world has built, the criteria the world has set for relationships. She loved you without anyone telling her what 'love' meant. You and Jhilmil had your kind of love; a little strange for the world to believe in but beautiful and pure just like, the ulta B she taught you to write. Barfi, you've made me laugh till my eyes teared up without uttering a single word and made me sob till my tears dried out. And while people held onto ego and other negative things that come in a relationship, Jhilmil clutched your pinky finger and discovered peace in your heartbeat. At the end of the movie when Shruti hears Jhilmil call out your name from behind; fighting with the thousands of thoughts going on inside her head, questioning herself if she should tell you or not, it was when the two beautiful forms of love were portrayed. A love so pure that led Shruti to sacrifice and let you go to Jhilmil and the other; written with permanent ink on the chapter of destiny that somehow reunited you and jhilmil.
I wish, people didn't care about anything and just loved, because when you love, every battle becomes less hard and the togetherness welcomes the strength to fight. Thank you, Barfi for giving us the courage to just love without expecting anything in return, for giving us a new reality to relationships.
-From someone who loves the silence

The Movie 'Barfi' had a scene where Barfi stands under a lamp post with his lover Shruti. He wanted to test the loyalty of Shruti. He chops the post off and let it fall on Shruti. He stood nearby to see what Shruti does. He knew the post was not going to touch her. He made the measurements before. While the post fells, Shruti runs away. Barfi gets frustrated seeing that.
In the first test of the loyalty the beautiful girl fails miserably. She stepped aside fearing that the post would fall on her. Barfi runs this test once again on Jhilmil. The love of his second life Jhilmil didn't move a bit seeing the post coming towards her. The lamp post fells and breaks the glass bottle. Jhilmil was standing there holding Barfi's shirt with her finger like she always does.
Jhilmil was mentally challenged. She wasn't smart. She couldn't understad what was going on. All Jhilmil had was her trust. Barfi, who holds her fingers and walks in front of her always, If he's there with her, no harm will ever come to her! he won't need to call her by her name standing in front of her house. All he needs to do is to throw his shoe through the window.
You need a Jhilmil in your life. Doesn't matter she is pretty or not. You need a Jhilmil to hold your hand and walk blindly beside you. You need a Jhilmil, who would come close to you and hold your finger if she gets scared at night. You need someone to fall asleep holding her finger!
'Barfi' teaches you the hardest reality of life. If you find a Jhilmil, never let her go. The reality is it's quite impossible to find a Jhilmil. The scene where Shruti's mother takes her to show her mothers lover who became a woodcutter, shows you how cruel reality could be! Shruti was a victim of situation as well.
When Barfi went to Shruti's house to ask her hand from her father, Shruti's father gave him some money as her mother told him Barfi came for donations. It broke Barfi's innocent heart who neither could hear nor could talk. Before walking out of their house he congratulated Shruti and her to-be husband saying they look great together through sign language. His umbrella doesn't open, his bi-cycle breaks down. He see's the expensive car of Shruti's to-be husband. He realizes the difference between Him and Shruti. What he was expecting was total madness. This scene is a solid masterpiece. One of the very few of Bollywood's gold. It's so pure that it hits straight inside your heart.
I watched 'Barfi' for the first time on a flight from Dhaka to Dallas, Texas. I boarded that flight with a heavy heart, as I was leaving all my loved ones behind. The flight was going to be a very long one. I wanted to distract my self, badly wanted to focus on something else. I opened the movie screen and 'Barfi' popped up. Started watching it without any thoughts or expectations. Honestly speaking, I couldn't even move to go to the lavatory through that two and half hour. Both Ranbir and Priyanka showed the world what they were made of and capable of doing. The music by Pritam was out of this world. The track 'Phir Le Aya Dil' by Shafqat Amanat Ali is a treat for your soul every time you listen to it, every time!
'Barfi' leaves a wonderful feeling with you after you watch it. It's like a magical hallucination. The movie makes you smile and say, "The biggest risk in life is to never take any risk!"
It makes you believe that there is a huge difference betweem loving someone madly and being loved by someone blindly. The second one is precious.
Very few people in the world get loved the way Jhilmil loved Barfi!
Sayonara everyone! <3
