There's something satisfying about when an abusive man is called out by other men. Or at least one man.
Rest In Infamy, You Haunted Castle
Why I believe the Neil Gaiman accusations
By GRAHAM LINEHAN JUL 19, 2024
I only met Neil Gaiman once, at an upscale dinner party where Derren Brown had been hired to do magic tricks like in the old-timey days. Between astonishments, Gaiman and I withdrew to a quiet corner where I pretended to be pleased that he was giving me a signed copy of ‘Sandman’. One of the unexpected advantages of being cancelled is telling people who took part in my harassment what I really think about their work, but this was a long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away, so I said the right things and we went back to being bamboozled by Brown’s invisible craft.
To give credit where it’s due, I later read Gaiman’s ‘Coraline’ to my kids which had them simultaneously terrified and hooked, and thanked him for it. Whatever my feelings about his earlier work, he was a real writer, practising his own invisible craft. From the evidence of that book, I thought he was probably a decent person too, an impression that continued until 2022, when we started to get into it over The Issue.
I may have asked why he wasn’t speaking out on behalf of JK Rowling, who was undergoing one of her regular cancellations for refusing to pander to the spoilt brats who loved her books but missed their meaning. A big name like his might have shifted the conversation and given her some much-needed support. He might perhaps have persuaded some of his fans to give the matter another look. This was when I assumed people like him acknowledged biological reality but worried about ‘coming out of the closet’, as it were. It took me years to realise that almost every celebrity mate of mine believed, or was pretending to believe, in the fashionable, American mind-cancer of ’gender’.
But back then, I was still astonished to find that he was a carrier of the virus, the mass delusion that by sheer coincidence, turned up after the arrival of the Internet. Whether it was Bill Bailey or Neil Hannon, Robin Ince or Matt Lucas, Arthur Mathews or Jimmy Mulville, it was always the same story. A sudden cloud of amnesia would form around my celebrity mates, a real peasouper, from which they suddenly could not see why we need female-only spaces, or why unhappy teenage girls will not find a miraculous cure for their woes in a double mastectomy. Far from sharing any of my urgency in the need to stop children from being irreversibly harmed in gender clinics, they instead downplayed, deflected and dismissed. “I never ask you to join in with my animal activism” grumbled Neil Hannon on one of the occasions I begged for his support.
“Couldn’t you pretend women and children are animals?” I thought.
My usual trajectory during these conversations saw me shifting from gobsmacked disbelief to fury and despair. The disloyalty made me angry, but knowing my friends did not care about their own daughters, wives, sisters and mothers was, and continues to be, destabilising in the extreme.
Gaiman went one step further. I can’t find the tweet, so I may be paraphrasing, but he said
"I hope you're kinder if your daughter ever hopes to transition."
I can think of no uglier thing to say to a parent. For girls, ‘transition’ means double mastectomies in their teens, hysterectomies in their mid-twenties, early menopause and a four times greater chance of having a heart attack than males of the same age. To have this decaying goth wish that horror on my daughter was more than I could bear. I wanted to rip his throat out.
Like a pair of grappling cowboys falling off a rooftop, our fight spilled into email. I sent Gaiman this article about the Tavistock. It was clear when he wrote back that he hadn’t absorbed it Like most celebrities in this fight, he appeared to have lost the ability to read.
Tumblr media
“As I said before Graham, I hope that you'd be kinder if it was one of your kids who wanted to transition. “
He actually said it again. The piece was right there, detailing exactly what was happening to the children unlucky enough to wander through the Tavistock’s doors, and he chose to repeat that disgusting thing. Why?
That same year, just months before Gaiman was advising me on the value of kindness, a 22-year-old woman (‘Scarlett’ in the podcast) arrived at his Waiheke Island home in New Zealand for a babysitting job. Upon her arrival, she discovered that Gaiman’s wife of the time, Amanda Palmer, had suddenly remembered a sleepover, an appointment the child was apparently eager to attend.
So she and junior drove out of view, leaving the 23 -year-old Scarlett alone with Gaiman for the night. Within a few hours the 61-year-old man, without warning or invitation, appeared fully naked and slipped into the other end of her bath. Scarlett alleges that over the next three weeks, they embarked on a semi-consensual relationship, where Gaiman routinely ignored the boundaries she set. She alleges that he became angry when she would refuse these demands, used a belt to beat her, insisted she call him ‘Master’ and once sexually assaulted her so violently that she lost consciousness.
“… (the sex) was so painful and so violent that I fainted. I passed out, lost consciousness, ringing in the ears, black vision, the pain was celestial, you know, which is a strange word to use, but I couldn't even describe it in language. And when I regained consciousness and I was on the ground, I looked up and he was watching the rehearsals from Scotland of whatever they were filming, I don't fucking know. And he didn't even notice that I was passed out. And you know…there was blood. It was so so, so traumatic, and I asked him to stop. I said it was too much.”
Scarlett is a compelling witness despite, or because of, her contradictions. Certain things paint a picture of consent—she sexted Gaiman, to which he would send careful replies—and she laughs nervously when she talks about the alleged abuse. But when Gaiman’s side of the story is put to her, she turns cold as a knife and shows flashes of fury that she—in her telling—young, inexperienced and dazzled by Palmer and Gaiman’s fame and lifestyle, was used so casually and so brutally.
A few years back, I wrote about becoming a sort of Jessica Fletcher figure on Twitter. ‘Murder, She Wrote” but with paedophiles and predators. “Just as murderers seemed drawn to any location Jessica presented herself, “ I said. “My opining about women's rights and safety on Twitter appeared to attract the kind of men who can't sit still during a spelling bee.”
Tumblr media
Among my adversaries was Peter Bright, the Ars Technica writer now doing twelve years for trying to buy two children to abuse. Luckily the children didn’t exist and the parents were actually FBI agents. Our exchange was brief and concerned safeguarding. I’m sure you’re all astonished to discover that he was against it.
Then there was ex-Labour MP Eric Joyce, who argued with me about the safety of mixed-sex loos in schools and was done for possessing the worst kind of child abuse images. More recently, I tangled with ‘Lexi’, who is now serving time for rape.
They all had one thing in common. They couldn’t leave alone those of us who were actively opposing the trans movement's assault on safeguarding, an assault that chimed nicely with their plans for the future. Each was returning to the scene of a crime not yet committed, each picking at a scab on their own character.
In 2018, at the height of #MeToo, Gaiman tweeted “On a day like today it’s worth saying, I believe survivors. Men must not close their eyes and minds to what happens to women in this world. We must fight, alongside them, for them to be believed, at the ballot box, and with art, and by listening, and change this world for the better.”
Well said. I certainly believe the women in ‘Master’. During my Jessica Fletcher period (a period which continues) no-one except Gaiman ever mentioned my kids. I think he knew it would cause me distress, and the second time he said it was just a twisting of the knife. Many of my colleagues in the media joined in with the trashing of my reputation, but Gaiman went that extra mile. I believe this is because he is a sadist. I think he is a man who finds pleasure in the suffering of others, and a man who does not see women and girls as fully human.
This was my final letter to him.
Dear Neil
I notice you’re still pretending you can’t read the Tavistock story. If you ever try and lay that curse on my kids again I will certainly share our exchange. Your privileged beliefs are harming children so to paraphrase Will Smith, keep their names out of your fucking mouth.
Thank you for giving me one last chance to say that JK Rowling will be remembered as a hero and you as a traitor to the kids who loved your books.
Rest in infamy, you haunted castle.
All the best,
Graham.

Just a quick primer for anyone who might not know:
The reason JK Rowling was able to so effectively silence Rikvah Brown, the journalist who (entirely accurately) called her a Holocaust denier for denying trans people were ever targeted by the Nazis, is because British libel laws are completely and utterly broken.
In the US, the First Amendment places the burden of proof on the complainant, reflecting the importance of freedom of speech in the constitution: if you're going to challenge someone's right to free speech, you need concrete evidence that what they're saying is untrue and that they are doing so deliberately and maliciously.
In the UK, however, the burden of proof falls upon the accused. They have to PROVE that what they're saying is true, and the standard of proof required is exceedingly difficult to meet; you can't, for instance, find an earlier example of the same claims being made and state you were (mistakenly or not) taking your cue from that. Even allegations in an arrest warrant are not accepted as reasonable evidence upon which to make disputed claims. For British journalists, a libel case is as good as a death sentence for your story.
Because of the impossibility of fighting a libel case, the threat alone is usually enough to silence and cow dissent. Rikvah Brown said she simply didn't have “the financial resources to engage in a legal battle with Rowling", and in such an outmatched fight Rowling was able to demand whatever she wanted of her - not only a retraction of her claim, but an apology to boot.
This is how the UK has fostered a culture of "open secrets", where certain things are known but never mentioned, often until it's too late. From the harmless - Benjamin Britten's homosexuality - to the grotesque - Ryan Giggs' affair with his sister-in-law - to the truly monstrous - Jimmy Savile's and, more recently, Russell Brand's stranglehold over stories of their serial sexual predations. It creates a society where, in the words of one journalist, "bad people get away with bad things".

Babel, Babel: Or the Necessity of Violence: An Arcane History of the Oxford Translators' Revolution by RF Kuang:
The library of Babel is the most important setting of an amazing dark academia book by R. F. Kuang. The name speaks for itself it’s described as a truly amazing place. All of the book is really incredible dealing with colonialism, racism, capitalism, class inequality and sexism.
Major spoiler warning: Just by the name you feel like the doom of the place is inevitable yet it hits you hard when the library ends up in flames
ART's archives, The Murderbot Diaries by Martha Wells:
"My onboard archives are extensive. Why haven't you sought access to them?" Of course a research vessel would brag about its research library. Why wouldn't it?
The Restricted Section, Harry Potter series by JK Rowling:
- has books that can kill you
- literally one of the first depictions of a fictional library i ever came across so its got nostalgia factor
"Ivy" the Archive, The Dresden Files by Harry Butcher:
She is a girl who remembers all recorded knowledge of human kind. We first meet her as a twelve year old known only as "the Archive", but she likes the nickname "Ivy" when Harry Dresden suggests it.

That thing where bigots accuse trans people of things and then when pressed for examples name people who aren't trans.
The other day I had some random youtube video going in the background because I needed background noise and I don't have TV or a radio, and someone got into an aside about one Jimmy Savile. That name rang a bell, because oh yeah, that's that name that TERFs are always incoherently shouting. I had never heard this name in any other context before (this may be surprising to British people but for real nobody in the vast world outside your tiny bigot-ridden island has heard of ANY of your celebrities outside of like, the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, Monty Python, Mr. Bean, and the leads from Doctor Who in 1980 and 2008, plus some people who got famous on American TV) so I started paying attention, but the person talking was kind of talking around the subject. So then I looked him up on wikipedia, and first of all, yikes, but also yeah this guy doesn't have the slightest thing to do with trans people, so what the hell?
See to hear TERFs tell it, the world was all sunshine and rainbows forever until the ever-moving target of "just a few years ago" when trans people suddenly started existing and you can't trust them, especially around kids, and then, yeah, they incoherently shout "Jimmy Savile!" Every so often one will be in an interview or something and not just shouting slurs at you in an unmoderated forum and there'll be some followup where they mutter about having absolutely no idea and being totally shocked but again like, none of that holds up? Trans people have been around for the entirety of human history and never actually caused any problems of any sort for anyone, this creep people claim to have had no idea he was a creep until after he died in 2011 had songs (plural!) on the radio about his well-known to anyone who ever interacted with him serial sexual assaults on children as far back as the the mid-1980s, and the particular TERF I most often trying to make some sort of connection here absolutely knew I was trans back when he was apparently trying to get into my pants in 2014, well after they I guess started scrubbing this creep's names off buildings and apparently before trans people existed according their weird sliding timeline.
Being, apparently, quite a few years older than all recorded human history, I also remember that bit where before really going all in on "corrupting our innocent children" BS and dropping other weird angles, there was this desperate flailing about where trans women were like, using our vile shapeshifting powers to sneak into locker rooms and punch people or whatever? In particular, I'm recalling the bit where it first became apparent to the last few hold outs that Rowling's an unhinged bigot, and some of those people had the presence of mind to ask her WTF it was she had against trans people anyway. To which Rowling responded with this non-sequitur about her ex-husband being a violent abuser. I remember at the time a lot of people were surprised, because they had no idea that Rowling's ex was trans. But see, people had no idea about that, because it's not at all true. Like the next day someone dug up the ex in question and asked him, "hey, are you actually a woman or something?" and he responded with a rather confused no.
And like, there's SOME logic to responding to the question "why are you making unfounded claims about a whole group of people being violent?" with "oh I know this person who's violent and I hate him," there's just this unspoken "and I feel like that's a pretty universal reaction, so being violent struck me as a good thing to claim about anyone I want people to hate," ditto with the CSA stuff, but it can't just be rational people with any clue what they're talking about like me who see these totally unrelated claims and go "OK wait though. If trans people are guilty of all these horrible evil things, why is it you literally don't seem to be able to name a single one, and keep just bringing up people who aren't trans?" Happens with sports too! They'll shout about trans people being super athletes and then when they can't actually find examples they point at random cis athletes.
I don't really have a larger point here, just, you know, it's a weird freaking tactic, and people don't call it out the way they should. So I guess I'll just awkwardly transition into begging for money again.

Unrelated to the main purpose of my blog, but if you’ll permit an excursion on this mini-crusade for a brief moment….can I just say that I really, REALLY don’t understand the fiery animosity that Rebel Moon is stoking across the internet?
Tumblr media
I mean, yeah…heartbreakingly, Rebel Moon is not great. To say that I was not disappointed would be a lie. At the same time, it’s certainly nothing terrible. It never bored me, and it doesn’t commit any new sins…all of the story and structural problems in Rebel Moon are also present in Dune Part 1 and MI: Dead Reckoning Part 1 (especially Dune). But those apparently get a free pass. It’s no more generic & ripped off than any of Disney’s 2023 slate, or Percy Jackson and the JK Rowling Lawsuit, or any of the endless Oscar-bait biopics that get cranked off the printing press every December. The action was fun and the subtle backstory breadcrumbs the characters left behind were at least interesting enough to make me give Part 2 a chance, which is more than can be said for any recent Star Wars project. It’s all perfectly “fine.” So why is everyone on YouTube and Reddit and Letterboxd acting like the sci-fi genre just experienced the Second Coming of L. Ron Hubbard? What’s so offensive here?
Ever since the Snyder Cut came out, it really seems like there’s been a concentrated online push to delegitimize Zack Snyder as a filmmaker and paint his fans as psychopathic idiots, and it all feels so needlessly aggressive. I can’t help but think that the bile toward Rebel Moon has festered at least partly from factors outside the movie itself.
Overall, it’s a decent enough table-setting episode, and if the meal to come with Part 2 in April is worth it, then that’s fine with me. This is only half the story; treat it as such.
It’s like…sheesh, calm down, people. You have Wishes and Aquaman 2s that you could be crucifying.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Also apparently in the extended director’s cut, Jimmy the Hopkins bot goes on a spiritual journey and starts living out in the woods like a feral homeless guy killing animals and shit, and FUCK YES I want to see that story.

Thomas Andrew Felton (born 22 September 1987) is an English actor, who is best known for his portrayal of Draco Malfoy in every film in the Harry Potter film series.
Born in Epsom, Surrey, he grew up in Epsom with his mother, Sharon, his father, Peter, and his three older siblings, Jonathan, Ashley and Chris. Felton.
In 2022 he directed the premiere of the film Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore.
On 13 October 2022, his memoir Beyond the Wand - The Magic and Mayhem of Growing Up a Wizard was released.
Felton attended Howard of Effingham School until May of 2004.
Felton's favourite car brand is BMW.
Felton listens to rap and hip-hop music.
Felton visits St Lawrence in New York almost annually to compete in the Carping Competition.[citation needed]
Felton currently has music videos on YouTube, under the account "feltbeats", featuring him singing and playing guitar. His songs can also be bought on the iTunes Store and Amazon.com.
Felton also appeared on Eight Out of Ten Cats, a comedy panel show about public opinion, news and statistics. It was during this appearance that host, Jimmy Carr, treated him in a comedically patronising manner, (due to his being noticeably younger than the other panellists), particularly at his excitement about the at-the-time new Transformers film.
Felton was the first of several actors from The Borrowers to appear in the Harry Potter films; others include Mark Williams (Arthur Weasley) and Jim Broadbent (Horace Slughorn).
Felton's real-life ex-girlfriend Jade Olivia plays his on-screen wife Astoria Greengrass in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2.
Felton's real hair colour is a dark blond and he has, to date (December 2010), dyed his hair 18 times for the films.
Felton is one of the thirteen actors to appear in all eight Harry Potter films.
Felton's co-star and on-screen enemy Emma Watson had a crush on Tom in the earlier films.
Felton was sorted into Gryffindor on Pottermore rather than Slytherin, the house of Draco Malfoy and the one he had personally identified with. Series author J. K. Rowling agreed with this sorting, however, noting that she "could've told [Tom] that years ago".
Felton has acted alongside both Fiennes brothers - Ralph Fiennes in the Harry Potter films, and Joseph Fiennes in the 2016 film Risen.
Felton's role as Julian Albert/Dr Alchemy on "The Flash" also referenced his role as Draco due to the Philosopher's Stone, which the main villain Savitar relied on, as that was also his first movie.
Emma Watson penned the foreword to Felton's memoir, Beyond the Wand - The Magic and Mayhem of Growing Up a Wizard .
