I love perfume soooo perfume headcanons for Hannibal characters (dealer’s choice for which ones)

YES OMG… okay I’ve thought so so much about perfume wrt Bedelia, both because her canonical perfume bottle is such an iconic presence

Taking it in a Watsonian sense that she decants a commercially available scent into a bottle she likes more for whatever reason, she might like something from Profumum Roma, maybe Alba or Olibanum. Xerjoff Zefiro??? (also realizing I recced a Profumum Roma scent for Will, lmao... be that as it may)

I associate her with iris and with more low key gourmand notes, nutty or spiced notes, rather than perfumes meant to evoke a specific baked good or anything really sticky-sweet. Powdery, cool, and dry. I don’t think she’s got any insecurities about wanting to look or be perceived as particularly youthful (her dress sense and attitude seem like they’re going to stay just as they are for the foreseeable future, just as polished and manicured as they are now) so she’s more amenable to weird powdery scentscapes that would repulse some random 22-year-old Scentbird subscriber. The symbolism of her leaving her perfume bottle behind for Hannibal is really intimate but it also suggests to me she’s the kind of person who’s loyal to a single fragrance rather than cycling through multiple depending on her mood. My biggest Bedelia headcanon is that she does so much perfume shopping in Florence. She does a lot of strategic shopping in general as a way of raising a subtle red flag but I didn’t get these unrealistic childhood expectations wrt the Farmaceutica Santa Maria Novella for nothing, tyvm.

s1/s2 Alana... I could see her having a similar taste in perfume to Clarice, something that's got less-direct nostalgic associations for her but that's congruent with a presentation of herself as professional and put-together and performing a particular kind of femininity; it's personal to her but it's also something in her toolbelt for moving through her professional setting as a woman. Very different actual perfume choice, than Clarice and her mom though, like a Jo Malone perfume lingering on her clothes. (English Pear & Freesia or Wild Bluebell?) In a more emphatic way she might also be a Tom Ford girlie (maybe White Suede?) but I think I just associate Tom Ford perfumes with the era s1/s2 were first airing. 

Beverly, ooo... they're all professional women but Beverly does more hands-on stuff so if she wears perfume it's a thing in her downtime, maybe her leather jacket carries a little ghost of scent with it. This is 100% pepperjacking on my part but I could see her as an indie scents/perfume collecting girlie. RIP Beverly Katz, you would have loved all the weird chemical scentscapes from Xyrena.

Margot is a tough one for me because I've still got a bug up my ass about how she's translated to the show -- book!Margot has a freshly-showered, cleanly sweaty thing going for her and if I was going to personal shop her a perfume I would get her something really summery and citrus-y and herbal, but show!Margot has a real Old Hollywood archfemme thing going for her. I feel like any perfume she wears is going to be pretty old-school and not something especially soft or welcoming. She's a hardboiled horse girlie so maybe something leathery like Robert Piguet Bandit???

NOW FOR PART 2, WHICH YOU CARE EVEN LESS ABOUT BUT YOU LITERALLY ASKED: The Overwatch gals.

Hana: I had to actually do research (ugh) for this one, because I know she'd be into whatever young people are wearing, because despite her best efforts and calculated marketing and overwhelming responsibility, she actually is a Young People. Young people in the US and Europe overwhelmingly wear vanillas and gourmands, but young people in Korea have much more affection for florals, which are considered more 'mature' in the western markets.* So. I wanted to find something floral but softer and with a bit of the sweet brightness that is identified with a lot of 'young' perfumes. Finally got to smell my frontrunners in Harrods this winter.

La Tulipe by Byredo. Byredo makes some FANTASTIC stuff but by God are they expensive (she wouldn't have to care anyhow) so it took me a long while to get a chance to smell this one. Even buying a decant, how I normally do perfume, was spendy. But it is exactly what I want, almost a top jammy note with this gorgeous subtle floral. It's young, but 'grown up' and composed. (the second frontrunner was Jo Malone's Wild Bluebell, but after smelling both, I think La Tulipe is right)

Fareeha. In much the same way, Fareeha's tastes are influenced by the middle east, though I know enough about that to not need to seek out stuff. She was actually extremely easy. I knew it the second I smelled it, as in, I was walking by and had to walk back because I knew it.

Oud Wood by Tom Ford. It's masculine and commanding. This is a leader's perfume. It's a very well balanced oud fragrance, appropriate for Cairo or London. It really strikes that balance between Western and Arabic perfumery in a way only a handful of perfumes do, and the other ones I can think of have spice or floral notes I don't think Fareeha would like. The wood and amber notes really come through, and lend this air of mystery and purpose to the whole thing. it's a great perfume honestly.

Angela I see as only wearing perfume for special occasions not even in a "not like the other girls' way, but in a 'she struggles to prioritize and take care of herself' way that i see a lot of her 'sloppiness' coming out of. I think if she did have one, she would pick something sweet and warm and very 'comforting'. There are so so many choices in this vein that it was genuinely difficult for me, but I think I like what I ended up with.

Apple Brandy on the Rocks by Killian. Funnily enough, I thought I would like this for me, but i absolutely do not. It's giving boozy apple pie, which fits so well with my concept of Angela at her greatest and highest that I'm annoyed I didn't think of it years ago. It should have been a Fareeha-type situation.

Lena. I have had an idea of what Lena smells like for YEARS, but I could never find it. It's young but masculine leaning, the smell of citrus brightness and an old leather jacket. For years I was layering perfumes to sort of get there but was never happy with it, and then one day I sampled something offhand just in case and there it was.

Sicilian Leather by Memo Paris. Honestly, everything i have smelled in their leather line has been killer even if it's not for me to wear, so I didn't think it would be a waste. (I absolutely recommend trying some of their stuff) But the second i smelled this, it was THANK GOD FINALLY. It's so hard to find something that uses leather that is also bright and cheerful and young, but this is it. Orange oil and Cedar, and laying under that, a gorgeous leather accord. It's perfect.

assigning fragrances to my (canon) muses. for funsies because it's my favourite activity ever, also utilizing my favourite website of all time, wikiparfum. continue reading if you'd like to see me infodump about perfumes. this is completely unnecessary. like many other things on my blog, none of this really matters, but it matters to me.

amanda: i highly doubt mandy is wearing scents at all, i don't think she cares for that. but i'm giving her one anyways because i can. (it was extremely hard to find one i felt suited her though.) inexcusable evil by toskovat. now, i have never actually smelled anything from this brand and i think their bottle design and logo both kind of suck, but based off the description of the fragrance, this might be mandy's. the descriptions i found for this on both wikiparfum and the brand's website are WILD. one of the top notes is gunpowder. heart notes include burn accord, iodine, and blood accord (LMAO???). i mean, i did purposely look for one that has blood accord, but i didn't expect to find any because that's not like, a popular scent. and then base notes are actually normal things like olibanum and sandalwood. also has cypriol, which gives a smoky, woodsy scent, which is the vibe i wanted for her too.

amy: this was also quite hard because amy is most definitely picky. she'd go for something very elegant and classy that is out of her price range, but she saved up all her money for. yellow hibiscus by jo malone is probably her style, which i also love because jo malone makes some of my favourites. it's very femme, but technically unisex, which i think is neat because i could also see laurie wearing it to. (i can see them sharing the same fragrance. they're that kind of couple.) it's very green and floral (hibiscus, rose, jasmine) and quite citrus forward. most importantly, lime! for the most obvious reasons of all (amy canonically loves limes). it's a really bright, fresh, sunny, and radiant scent, all very fitting for her. also my backup option for amy was bergamot by malin & goetz, but yellow hibiscus is way more fitting. i also considered going with something from the brand fragonard because that's a personal favourite of mine (i was gifted a set of them once and they are very nice), but couldn't decide on one in particular.

cameron: yes, i know the best we'll probably get from cam is that she puts on deodorant. i'm still giving her one anyways, because that's the whole point of this post. not going to bother with trying to find era accurate fragrances though, that's too much work for me. i really want to give her spacewalk by demeter fragrance library, both because it's cheap (cam is not spending more than $45, guaranteed) and because it's inspired by space! which according to an astronaut, smells metallic. (shoutout to the spacebike chronicles.) i do feel the need to include a high end option anyways, so odeur 53 by commes des garcons. it's got ozonic notes, which give it airy, metallic, and aquatic elements, as well as chlorine undertones.

camille: okay so i'm realizing that very few of my muses would wear perfume. i mean, camille is simply too depressed to bother, but again, this is not going to stop me. i decided on black vetyver cafe by jo malone. definitely something she would never buy for herself, but maybe she would wear if someone gave it to her. this one's got coffee, which i think she would like because coffee is her favourite ice cream flavour. there's also coriander, which makes it a bit sharper and peppery, while also green and fresh. warm notes of sandalwood, nutmeg, vanilla, ciste labdanum and woody vetiver. overall, very earthy and autumnal.

connell: he probably starts with something inexpensive from banana republic (either classic green or classic acqua). he's a simple dude, mostly just wants to smell fresh. if i'm going to give him something fancier (we can always say marianne got him a christmas present or WHATEVER), then i'm giving him skin by clean reserve. it's described as tender and intimate, with notes of honeysuckle, orange blossom, musk, and skin accord (which is basically just their way of saying it smells like an intimate embrace). it's all about intimacy, babeyyy.

harry: i have to give him rainbow bar by 19-69, for so many reasons. it's not just the name (and you know, the gayness of it all), but that's a huge factor. the fragrance is inspired by the rainbow bar on the sunset strip, which is pretty synonymous with sex, drugs, and rock n' roll. harry's role in adam's story is very much a representation of desire, intrigue, and the seductive nature of all the aforementioned elements. there's a warmth to this scent that's both comforting and mysterious. i really wanted to find something with notes of whiskey (taking into context, not only harry's introduction, but also his death), so this really fits perfectly. this might be the most "character accurate" choice on the whole list.

jess: i'm not even going to bother giving him something fancy because it feels wrong. smoky and earthy palo santo play by hawthorne is like $50 and that's literally like the maximum i can see him spending lmao. it's got notes of oakwood, sage, palo santo, and guaiac wood. very earthy and smoky, hints of tobacco and whiskey. because you know that boy smells like cigarettes and old leather and pretentiousness, but like, in a cheap way.

jia-yi: i chose fresh honeysuckle by fresh, despite the fact that it's discontinued, because fuck it, she can time travel anyways so that doesn't matter. honeysuckle also happens to symbolize nostalgia and memory, which is fitting. there's additional notes of fruit (peach, plum, blackcurrant bud) and florals (cyclamen, magnolia, ylang-ylang). honestly, i'm just kind of hung up on the fact that it's discontinued because this scent was SO good.

kate: there are so many options i wanted to go for with kate, but i think i have settled on realist extrait de parfum by ilk. it's categorized as being both a woodsy and a watery scent, which is primarily what i was looking for with kate in mind. (because like, weather and rain, you know.) it's got a bit of floral (rose, everlasting), a bit of citrus (yuzu, bergamot, lemon), wood (cedarwood, vetiver, olibanum), with the warmth of amber and pepper. it's described with concepts such as crisp mountain air and rain, appropriate for everyday and casual use. she's not formal or fancy and would want something nice, but versatile.

orla: she's a footballer, so i have to go with something athletic. i'm not like a huge fan of most "luxury sport" fragrances and like yeah, it's not about me anyways, but i don't think orla would be either. she's not someone who would care much about that even if she had the means to, so we're going with something pretty simple and affordable like team five by adidas. technically, it's for men, but she also does not care about gender. it's very fresh, fruity (green apple, lemon), and herbal (basil, pine needles, peppermint, clary sage, lavender) which i think are all scents she'd like. absolutely none of these words mean anything to her; she likes what she likes and doesn't overthink its meaning or importance. her other choice was hot wheels dino by jequiti, which she would 100% buy with no trace of irony whatsoever.

sydney: i felt the need to pick something with cherry notes because of course, the cherry donut that marcus named after her. 18-12 by ormaie is just that, as well as notes of almond, sandalwood, florals (rose, violet, heliotrope), fruit (lychee, bergamot, mandarin) and clary sage. it's quite fresh, youthful, and summery. i like her having sort of a fun and bright scent because her job is just so stressful and sometimes depressing, she needs something to uplift and contrast against all that.

Jo Malone storefront opened at the rich person mall so i had a good sniff sesh and got some samples (Tuberose Angelica and Jasmine Sambac & Marigold). went to Sephora anyway to test the new meme tom ford with the cringe and trashy name (Vanilla Sex) (it sucked also, smelled like raw dough in a not good way) and the cherry themed Black Opium flanker (fine, smelled like cough syrup, launched about 5 years too late, that trend has passed i think). came away with a commodity sample set. almost impulsively bought a travel spray of Bee (Ellis Brooklyn) because its really similar to Bee (Zoologist) which is just out of my tax bracket to be honestly. had a salad bar salad for my good friday fast small meal. gonna spend the rest of the day doing laundry and playing WoW i think.

I am honestly kind of boring compared to a lot of perfume girlies on here, I don't have a very sophisticated nose, but I do like to smell nice and collect pretty bottles 😊 I love florals and citrus-y scents (groundbreaking, I know...). My 'signature scent' (though tbh I don't spritz every day because it's pricey) is Diptyque Eau Rose EDT, a very fresh and romantic rose which regularly gets me compliments, perfect for spring imo. Rose can be stuffy, I think it might be the lychee note that makes it appealing to me. I just ordered the solid refillable version, which is so cute and ideal for putting in my bag to re-apply throughout the day:

I also have a weakness for Jo Malone, although tbh I think the quality of their releases keeps decreasing so I'm kind of done... I still love their Lime, Basil & Mandarin, Pomegranate Noir, and Orange Blossom. I also like the Guerlain Aqua Allegoria line, especially the Nettare di Sole and Pera Granita.

I recently purchased a Penhaligon's discovery set, but I haven't tried them yet - might do some little reviews here if people are interested!

I know she has a huge following, but Jo Malone products never appealed to me and I've never bought anything from them, until today. I was immediately drawn to the big bow on this fragrance when it launched weeks ago and even more intrigued by the name and notes of Ginger Biscuit Cologne. It's a fragrance they've previously released and those that love it, have been calling for it's return and here it is for the 2023 Holiday season with it's big striped bow and ginger coloured bottle.

I know critics will say, they've just slapped a bow on an old scent and called it 'limited edition' to lure us in, well their marketing worked on me as I wouldn't have (and didn't in previous years) look twice at it without the cute packaging. I generally love Christmas, so their Gingerbread Land theme this year really appealed to me with cologne adorned trees, huge candy striped bows, giant gingerbread house and whimsy soldiers.

Ginger Biscuit cologne has top notes of ginger, cinnamon and nutmeg with a caramel and hazelnut heart and warm base of vanilla and tonka bean. On paper, it sounds right up my street, so after stalling for weeks, I blind-bought the 100ml online today (fingers crossed I don't regret it) before it sells out. I'm hoping to smell like something yummy just come out of the oven at Christmas time, don't let me down Jo Malone!

P.S. I was sorely tempted by the Orange Bitters Cologne too, another Christmas LE that I think would be fantastic layered with Ginger Biscuit. There's also an adorable gingerbread house box with 5 miniature versions including the 3 limited edition Ginger Biscuit, Orange Bitters and Green Almond & Redcurrant, as well as other sets, the advent calendar and candles.
