Monday, March 13: HammerFall, “The Dragon Lies Bleeding”
Four years after Gamma Ray and Rage toured under the “Melodic Metal Strikes Back” banner, Jesper Strömblad and Glenn Ljungström (both of whom were already heroes in the death metal scene) really took that expression to heart as they respectively wrote and played on HammerFall’s Glory to the Brave. Although the group was Oscar Dronjak’s vision from the very beginning, it was the presence of the two In Flames guitarists as much as the press about this group being the one to bring traditional metal back to prominence that garnered most of the attention.  And when put in this context, “The Dragon Lies Bleeding” made perfect sense: Glory to the Brave’s opening track bore many of the same melodic flourishes that defined the Gothenburg sound, but amplified to reflect both Strömblad’s leaning in to those particular elements as well as the overarching HammerFall concept.  Really, it was Joacim Cans’ power metal vocalizing that truly separated the track from what other Nuclear Blast acts were doing at the time.  This sort of sound was profoundly unfashionable at the time, so much so that the mere existence of Glory to the Brave was presented as an act of defiance, but “The Dragon Lies Bleeding”, despite really being a Gothenburg take on power metal, was executed with expert care and actually did more to restore the genre than most expected.

Lyrics:
I just can't get enough of all these summer skies
The sun, it brings me up, it gets me high
I can live in this moment for the rest of time
So stay a little longer, my love
I just can't get enough of all these summer skies
They wash away the darkness from my mind
I can live in this moment for the rest of time
Oh my
I just wanna dive into your love, your love
Dive into your love, your love
I just wanna dive into your love, your love
Dive into your love, your love
I just wanna dive into your love
I just wanna dive into your love
(I wanna dive, wanna dive)
I just wanna dive into your love
I feel there's something coming over me
It's like a flash in my head
Right here with you is where I'm supposed to be
It's like coming home again
I just can't get enough of all these summer skies
The sun, it brings me up, it gets me high
I can live in this moment for the rest of time
So stay a little longer, my love
I just can't get enough of all these summer skies
They wash away the darkness from my mind
I can live in this moment for the rest of time
Oh my
I just wanna dive into your love, your love
Dive into your love, your love
I just wanna dive into your love, your love
Dive into your love, your love
I just wanna dive into your love

The Risen Empire Faceclaim / Fancast
(mostly because I need it for drawing, but also because doing these is such fun)
Tumblr media
Mary Chieffo - Rix Warrioress h_rd
An absolute no-brainer. Not just is she very tall and has quite the broad shoulders and is relatively buff (though not super soldier level buff for obvious reasons) and fits the physical description just perfect otherwise, playing L'Rell in Star Trek Discovery showed that she can both play brutal and very alien and also vulnerable and out of her depth at the same time. And in "Every Morning" she showed that she can play sapphic romances - she also is openly queer in real life
Tumblr media
Irene Böhm - Militiaman Rana Harter
If this was a real cast Rana would need to be played by someone actually neurodivergent, but since this is just some thought experiment...
Böhm, a German actress, became famous by playing tribute Lamina in "The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes". Though not being a big role, she gave her depth and dignity and vulnerability. I mostly chose her because with her red hair and her features looking quite similar to Chieffos, she fits the physical description quite well. The age gap is a bit big, Böhm being 19 or 20 I think and Chieffo being 30, but then again, thought experiment
Tumblr media
Gizem Emre - Militiaman Rana Harter
Another german actress, Emre is another choice for Rana. She is most famous for school comedy "Fack Ju Göthe", where she plays a difficult chaos student, so quite different from nervous, insecure Rana. However, she brings enough depth into the role that I could imagine her managing it. I chose her because Rana actually is an actual arabic first name, so it would make sense when Rana is middle eastern (even if that would make her red hair quite unlikely).
Tumblr media
Mandip Gill - Senator Nara Oxham
Nara is just described as being brown, but for some reason I imagined her as desi the whole time. Something about Gills vibes just seems right? From her acting in Doctor Who she also would likely be able to pull off the subtleties of being a powerful politician whoes telepathy helps her but also can very easily overwhelm and harm her. Not sure if, if this was a real cast, she would be needed to be played by an neurodivergent actress, since telepathy is not an real neurodivergence - but also her symptoms are just so similar to being actually neurodivergent.
Tumblr media
Nathan Stewart-Jarrett - Captain Laurent Zai
Now, if this was real casting the actor would definitely have to be an amputee too. But whatever. The honestly quite small number of roles I know Stewart-Jarret from, an annoyed low level actor in "The Argument", and an desperate porn actor who ends up with more and more dangerous and gross roles in "Mope", are very different from Zai, but they show enough depth and varity that I could see him play an traumatized tactical genius slowly doubting his Empire. Also he is quite tall and lanky.
Tumblr media
Amanda Seyfried - Commander Katerie Hobbes
Hobbes most striking feature is, that through the cultural habit of excessive beauty surgery of her home planet, she looks extremely conventionally attractive. Seyfried just fits that look very well, but I could also imagine her playing that contrasting with how no-nonsense and loyal Hobbes is.
Tumblr media
Benedict Wong - Master pilot Joacim Marx
I don't know, something about the vibe just fits?
Tumblr media
Eddie Redmayne - The Risen Emporer
Unpopular opinion but I loved how overdramatic and flamboyant but also very threatening he was in "Jupiter Ascending", traits that would fit the Risen Emporer too.

„A város, aminek nem tudom kimondani a nevét”: FEZEN zárónap – Székesfehérvár, 2023. 07. 29.
„A város, aminek nem tudom kimondani a nevét”: FEZEN zárónap – Székesfehérvár, 2023. 07. 29. - https://metalindex.hu/2023/08/05/a-varos-aminek-nem-tudom-kimondani-a-nevet-fezen-zaronap-szekesfehervar-2023-07-29/ -
A Glory To The Brave-et Joacim telefonok ezreinek fényénél énekelte, majd bemutatta a zenekart, a cérnavékony Oscart valahogy úgy jellemezte, amit magyarban úgy mondanánk, 40 kiló vasággyal együtt.
Brotherhood / Any Means Necessary / The Metal Age / Hammer Of Dawn / Blood Bound / Renegade / No Son Of Odin / Last Man Standing / ’Crimson Thunder’-egyveleg / Let The Hammer Fall / Glory To The Brave / (We Make) Sweden Rock // Hammer High / Hector’s Hymn / Hearts On Fire
Ellenben a bagó helyét a mosoly vette át a szája sarkában.
Éjfél után 10 perccel fejezték be az előadást. Most aztán törhetem a fejem, melyik volt az eddigi legjobb. De én azt mondom, mindig az utolsó!
Skyfall / Eagle Fly Free / Mass Pollution / Future World / Power / Save Us / Walls Of Jericho (Playback) – Metal Invaders – Victim Of Fate – Gorgar – Ride The Sky – Heavy Metal (Is The Law) / Forever And One (Neverland) / gitárszóló (Sascha) / Best Time / Dr. Stein / How Many Tears // Perfect Gentleman / Keeper Of The Seven Keys /// dobszóló / I Want Out

HELLOWEEN/HAMMERFALL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hey everyone sorry for running 4 days late but better late than never, here is my 4th review of 2023, Helloween and Hammerfall!!!!!!!!!!! I hadn’t seen both of these bands in half a decade and 4 years respectively, not since Wacken 2018 and 2019, so it felt great to see them again. Helloween also haven’t played Toronto in almost a decade not since they played Opera House, Hammerfall I last saw in Toronto half a decade ago on the same night Slayer played their final show on their final tour and it was also at Opera House. This time around, both bands played at History, which was my 2nd time going there.
Let’s start the festivities!
First band up was HAMMERFALL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This was my 5th time seeing them as I last saw them at Wacken Open Air 2019 and they were spectacular at that time, and when I saw them at WOA 2019 it was before Sabaton took the stage and played a 2 hour show, plus both bands would come to Toronto in October of that same year but I skipped that show as I had already seen both bands play at Wacken. Hammerfall get better each time I see them live and Joacim Cans is a joker especially with his onstage antics during songs and his funny banter especially pointing to a guy in the back saying “except for this guy” before Let the Hammer Fall played. Here’s their setlist:

Hearts on Fire
After Hamerfall it was time for the German power metal juggernauts, HELLOWEEN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This was my 5th time seeing them as I last saw them half a decade ago as the Wacken 2018 super headliners as they played a 2.5 hour set from 9:30 PM-Midnight on the last day of Wacken Open Air and it was on the Pumpkins United tour that saw the return of Kai Hansen and Michael Kiske, and that was the best I had seen Helloween play since I got to see them in their home country and on the biggest metal festival in both Europe and the world. This time around they played at History and they had a pretty good turnout I must say, although it wasn’t sold out compared to them playing a packed field at WOA 2018. Before they played Forever and One (Neverland) Michael Kiske and Andi Deris were talking and Andi said “This song is for my beloved...ex” and Michael said “Everyone with your smartphones take them out and turn on the lights, it looks niceeeee” Andi then said “I remember people with cigarette lighters would have burnt fingers and thumbs” which made me laugh. Here’s their setlist:

For the Love of a Princess(James Horner song)
Overall a great show, but I do say fuck early in the week shows as I feel tired the next day and I have no motivation to immediately do my reviews, compared say to Thursday, Friday or Saturday shows, and as well the commute to History can suck my hairy dick, lick my hairy scrotum, and eat my hairy ass. Also I will be seeing both Hammerfall and Helloween at this years Wacken Open Air, so that will be a lot better.
HEAVY METAL FOREVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

HAMMERFALL: Joacim Cans on the label ‘Power Metal’ And New Album "Avenge The Fallen"
In an interview with Metal Hammer, HammerFall frontman Joacim Cans recently clarified that the band does not identify with the frequently used label “Power Metal.” Cans explained that the term ‘Power Metal’ is ” the American way of naming traditional heavy metal, especially if it’s not made in the 80s.” He emphasized: “We are as traditional as can be. I think heavy metal is enough because, within…

Lyrics:
You're just like my favorite song going 'round and 'round my head
Like my favorite song going 'round and 'round my head
Five days on the freeway
Riding shotgun with you (yeah, yeah)
Two hearts in the fast lane
We had big dreams in blue (yeah, yeah)
Playing Sweet Child O' Mine
And I still feel that line
Where are you now?
Where are you now?
Hey, it's been too long
Too long to go, my love
Where did we go wrong?
Too late to turn around
Where are you now?
Where are you now?
Hey, it's been too long
Hey, it's been too long
You're just like my favorite song going 'round and 'round my head
Like my favorite song going 'round and 'round my head
You're just like my favorite song going 'round and 'round my head
Like my favorite song going 'round and 'round my head
Some days I can feel it
But the feeling ain't all blue
You got me believing
One day you gotta come through
Lost in these city lights
'Cause I can't sleep tonight
Where are you now?
Where are you now?
Hey, it's been too long
Too long to go, my love
Where did we go wrong?
Too late to turn around
Where are you now?
Where are you now?
Hey, it's been too long
You're just like my favorite song going 'round and 'round my head
Like my favorite song going 'round and 'round my head
You're just like my favorite song going 'round and 'round my head
Like my favorite song going 'round and 'round my head
Where are you now?
Where are you now?
Where are you now?
Where are you now?
Where are you now?
