Plentiful Papa Peter in Prisoner's Dilemma (Part 3):

Neal really did live up to his status as an FBI asset in this one. First, he gathered important information covertly. He then gave valuable advice that not only helped Peter escape a dangerous situation but made his handler look like an impressive mentor. He arranged for Peter and his fellow agent to hide out at one of Mozzie's safe houses. So great how he managed to convince Hughes' boss, Kyle Bancroft, to go along with Peter defying procedure for a greater good- something only Peter is allowed to do according to Season 5. All in all, good work is an understatement for how well Neal contributed to this insane case. Too bad it earns him a grand total of diddly squat from his favorite grown-up.

After all of that madness, Peter pays him s compliment before yanking the rug right out from under him. He doesn't even consider permitting Neal to see that exhibit. They all know how desperate he is to attend it, but the other agents still refuse to take him. Even when he makes one final infantile please-plea. To be fair, I don't think Peter's trying to be cruel.here. Yes, he's proud of Neal, but he likely doesn't want to set the precedent that good work automatically earns you a privilege. A good day's work should be its own reward. It's one of those annoying 'understand when you're older' parental teaching moments.

This might also be some karma for Neal taking his anklet key off of that marshal, something he does for nefarious purposes. Still, Neal's heartbroken sad face is a real gut-punch. He's not even doing it for pity since the others are gone, making it even sadder.

Agent Bancroft is an unexpected bright spot here. He's Hughes' boss so he doesn't know the White Collar team too well. Before that day, he only knew Neal from his lengthy rap sheet. Clearly, how the CI carried himself impressed him enough to believe there's more to him than his criminal record. He takes him to the museum without Neal having to ask or running it by Peter first. I know we don't see Agent Bancroft again after this, but as far as I'm concerned, he's Honorary Uncle Kyle 💞

Alright, I obviously love the whole White Collar team and Neal frequently engages in low-key naughtiness. Even so, I wish the older members would cut him a break. He's not trying to drive across state lines to a party.or concert. He just wants to go to a museum slightly outside of his radius. He's A-OK having a chaperone, too. It would do Neal a lot of good if the others encouraged his interests more. It would also motivate him to seek permission more often than asking forgiveness after the fact. Just my fifty cents and all.
