Spn Then and Now
06x02 Two and A Half Men
John F. Showalter: On Spn I used to count to a hundred (before yelling cut) 'cause the boys were so so great. Jensen goes over & does the whole thing with the whiskey? That was all him!
They're great at that. Jensen would go forever. Jared would go for quite a while and then say "Come on, come on"!
Honestly, now I don't care much about Rob and Rich's analysis or opinions. I follow the podcast to hear stuff like this 😏

Stuff I'm Looking Forward To in May
How is it already May? In addition to being Asian Pacific American Heritage Month as well as Orthodox Easter (5/5), Cinco de Mayo (5/5), Mother's Day (5/12) and Memorial Day (5/27) here is what's on my radar this month:
Movies:
The Idea of You
A Michael Showalter movie is always a highly anticipated for me. I was a huge fan of his comedy group The State and I named his film The Big Sick my #1 Movie of 2017. Since then his films have been mixed (including The Eyes of Tammy Faye) but they are always unique in their own way. His new one is a romantic drama with Anne Hathaway premiering on Amazon Prime Video on 5/2.
Star Wars Episode 1 The Phantom Menace
When the first Star Wars prequel was released in May 1999, there was no way any movie could live up to the expectation. While it's not perfect by any means, it is better than people initially thought. I saw it a few times in the theater in 1999 (including opening day) and in 2012, I saw the 3-D re-release. Without the hype and fanfare it wasn't bad. There's been quite a few revisionist appraisals of Ep 1 in recent years. In addition to select theaters doing a Star Wars Eps 1-9 marathon, Ep 1 is getting a 25th anniversary re-release on 5/3.
Unfrosted
Jerry Seinfeld is a comic genius! Now he's making his directorial feature film debut with a comedy biopic about the creation of the Pop Tart in 1963. With Jerry directing, co-writing, producing and starring I'm on board! Premieres 5/3 on Netflix.
Let It Be
The 1970 documentary about The Beatles recording their final album has been out of print for years and now it has been remastered by Peter Jackson for a Disney+ streaming premiere on 5/8. Fingers crossed a blu-ray follows!
Back to Black
Amy Winehouse had such a short musical career, but her legacy lives on. After the excellent documentary Amy in 2015, she is now getting the music biopic treatment directed by Sam Taylor-Johnson, the director of the criminally underrated Nowhere Boy about the early days of John Lennon. Opens 5/17.
IF
John Krasinski proved himself as a director with A Quiet Place. Now he is back with a fantasy about imaginary friends and it's one of those "everyone is in it" casts! Opens 5/17.
Hit Man
A Richard Linklater film is always a high film priority for me! His new action-comedy has been creating quite a buzz since its festival premiere last year. It's adapted from an article by Skip Hollandsworth and the last adaptation of his from Linklater was Bernie! Star and co-writer Glen Powell has worked with Linklater on Everybody Wants Some!! and Apollo 10 1/2. I could not be more psyched! Limited theatrical release on 5/24 and Netflix premiere on 6/7.
Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga
2015's Mad Max: Fury Road, the 4th Mad Max movie, set the bar pretty high for high octane action. Now George Miller is back with a prequel about Furiosa. Opens 5/24.
Music:
Aerosmith Get Your Wings 50th Anniversary Limited Edition
In March, Aerosmith's second album turned 50! To celebrate the anniversary they are releasing a special edition vinyl on 5/17!
Slash Orgy of the Damned
GN'R guitarist Slash is back with his sixth solo album featuring tons of guest stars including Brian Johnson and Steven Tyler doing blues covers. Album drops 5/17!
Ringo Starr Crooked Boy
Sir Ringo Starr has been on a roll knocking out tons of EPs including EP3 and Rewind Forward. Now he has his 5th EP since 2021 (my God - put all of these EPs together and it'd be a killer album!). This one was written and produced by Linda Perry. After an RSD and digital release last month, a physical release will be on 5/31 (review to come)!
Film Festivals:
Independent Film Festival Boston
My favorite film festival in Boston (and possibly the world) takes place at the best indie cinemas in Boston from May 1-8 (see my preview here).
In a category all its own:
Tumblr media
My birthday is on 5/20!

W A T C H E D
I've seen my share of John Hughes movies. He was the most successful 80s-90s writer.
National Lampoon's Vacation, European Vacation, Christmas Vacation, Mr. Mom, Weird Science, Ferris Bueller, 'Planes, Trains and Automobiles', The Great Outdoors, Uncle Buck, Home Alone 1 & 2, Only the Lonely, Baby's Day Out, Dennis the Menace, Miracle on 34th Street (1994), Dutch...
I just haven't seen any of the MOLLY RINGWALD ones. Well, time to play catchup.
ANTHONY MICHAEL HALL is really clever young actor, more than I ever noticed previously.

Jazz Saxophonist Pharoah Sanders Dead at 81
- “Always and forever the most beautiful human being,” Luaka Bop label says
Jazz saxophonist Pharoah Sanders, whose six-decade career found him collaborating with everyone from John Coltrane to Joey DeFrancesco, has died at age 81, his record label said.
No cause was given.
“We are devastated to share that Pharoah Sanders has passed away,” Luaka Bop said in a Sept. 24 statement.
“He died peacefully surrounded by loving family and friends in Los Angeles earlier this morning. Always and forever the most beautiful human being, may he rest in peace.”
Sanders began his career with Coltrane in 1965. He went on to work with Sun Ra, Ornette Coleman, DeFrancesco and others, while also releasing some 30 solo recordings.
“He will be greatly missed,” the Sun Ra Arkestra tweeted.
Though he continued playing live, Sanders went nearly two decades without releasing any new music until 2021’s acclaimed Promises.
“Listening to Pharoah Sanders made me a better human being,” Timothy Showalter, who performs as Strand of Oaks, said in a tweet.
“Transformative art at its highest level. No greater gift someone can give. Rest in power.”

Lindor, Mets Dominate Athletics
Wow, did Fransisco Lindor come up huge on Friday night in Oakland. The Mets superstar shortstop went 2-5 with a whopping seven RBI’s in the team’s 17-6 victory. Lindor first hit a Grand Slam in the second inning off of Athletics pitcher James Kaprielian. He later followed with a base clearing double, collecting three more RBI’s. He also walked once, Lindor is now slashing .245/.377/.531/.908…

A JOHN/JANE DOE? - THE GHOST BOYS + FINNEY BLAKE
GENDER NEUTRAL PRONOUNS / THEY/THEM PRONOUNS
INSPIRED BY "THE BALLAD OF JANE DOE"
Tumblr media
It's pitch black. Everything is. It's cold. Wherever the hell they were, it was cold. They stood with their eyes closed at first, a couple voices speaking up. One stuck out in particular. It sounded like a young boy.. at least an eleven or twelve year old.. "They don't look like anyone we know.. Do they..?" He seemed to question, but.. who was he talking to? The new ghost didn't know. They felt warmth on their face. A warm liquid. Their eyes remained closed as they tried figuring out what was happening. They felt a poke to their side. Another person was here with them..? This time, the figure seemed a little bit further away. "No. We don't know them, Griffin." This voice was annoyed. Seemed it at least.
"Be nice, Vance." A voice warned. This seemed to be a boy around the same age as this.. Vance boy.. Slowly, but surely, the new figure opened their eyes, looking between what seemed to be five or six boys.  A blonde, a light brunette, two dark brunettes, and what seemed to be two ravenette's. They stared between the six, confused on who they were, and what the hell had happened here. Taking a step back from the group, the new figure spoke with a confused tone of voice. "Who are you all." Well.. it didn't sound like a question at all. They looked around at each boy, taking in their features. As if they'd never seen either of them before. But they had. They just didn't know..
The first one was a boy with dirty blonde, or light brunette hair. He stood at 5'3. He appeared to be around thirteen. He was pretty short. The unnamed ghost tried to figure out who he was, but the boy spoke up himself. "Billy.. Showalter.. Or.. the town's paperboy." He introduced himself,  holding a hand out to the newcomer. Who only stared at him with a confused look.
The next boy seemed to be blonde. An actual.. blonde.  The unnamed ghost stared at him. The boy had a denim jean vest, gambling pieces on the shoulders, a white shirt with blood splattered on it. His nose had blood trailing down, alongside with his lip. And head..  and neck... Now that the unnamed ghost looked between all the boys, they had begun to realize every single one of these boys look like they'd been murdered. Billy had spoken up, seeming as if the blonde didn't seem like he was going to. "That's Vance.. Pinball.. Vance Hopper.."
Vance only seemed to stare at them with an annoyed look before two boys slightly nudged him away. The two boys were both brunettes with curly hair. One curlier than the other.  The unnamed ghost looked between them both, silent at first. The smaller young wore a grey  shirt, black shorts, what seemed to be long socks and white or grey shoes. His neck appeared to be slit. He had blood all down his shirt. He went to speak, looking at the unnamed figure. There was hesitation in his voice. "I'm.. Griffin. I was the first victim.." He mumbled, rubbing the back of his neck and hissing out softly.
"Careful." The other brunette had said softly. He was wearing a blue and white shirt, jeans and sneakers. He didn't look very bloody, but bruised to the max, Maybe this boy wasn't a ghost? They reached towards the brunette, their hand going through him. It only led the brunette to let a little laugh out. "We'll explain everything afterwards." He spoke, shaking his head before smiling towards the newcomer. "I'm Finney Blake." He introduced himself.
There was two more.  A boy in green, and a boy with a bandana. Both boys had blood on them. These must've been the latest two victims..? The boy with the bandana spoke first. "I'm Robin. And lastly, the one who told Vance to be nice, is Bruce." He introduced the two of them, his arms crossing as he looked around. "Now.. how do we explain... where you are.. without knowing who you are..?" He questioned, beginning to walk around the unnamed figure.
"I.. I do not.. know. How I can answer your question." The unnamed figure spoke, turning to look at Robin as he walked around them. Their white eyes went to every single boys eyes. Making quick eye contact before looking away. They took a couple steps back, at least until they stumbled over the mattress that seemed to be in this stupid, stupid basement. They stared at each boy, trying to figure something out in their head. Before finally, they spoke.
"Isn't there anyone to tell me who I am?"

i know the writers pretty well but i'm pretty shaky on directors. singer films episodes like it's still the 1970s and dramatic zooms are all the rage. kim manners was responsible for the atmosphere of early seasons. john f showalter was alrightttt but kind of dragged down by working on typically mediocre episodes. thomas j. wright, of "the prisoner scene is a shot-for-shot remake of a scene from dark angel" fame. (<-he's good besides that though. did baby and lily sunder). phil sgriccia did sacrifice and lost & found so generally positive. guy bee i have personal beef with. amanda tapping (of naomi fame) was good!!! nina lopez-corrado is underrated!! amyn kaderali did last call, mint condition, and ouroboros so he has rights. misha's directing style was kinda horny ngl.
