It’s the 1870s The dress from the 1871 portrait of Princess Marie of Baden shows an early Victorian bodice with a full skirt with bustle. The photo from 1879 shows a close skirt. (from top to bottom) -

AZIRACROW-CODED IMAGERY THROUGHOUT HISTORY

(All of the images are old and none of the artists are still alive, so excuse me if I don’t post links to their Tumblrs.)

1: 1920, Berlin: Sebastian Droste and Anita Berber. It’s them!

2: Cecil Beaton’s bright young things of the 1920s. It’s a Crowley!

3: Can’t find the exact date - but it’s lesbians from around 1900, and it’s pretty clear who’s who.

5: Renée Vivien and Natalie Clifford Barney, Writers (1898-1901). I mean, come on.

6: Joseph Scheurenberg - A Shared Moment (1878). It’s Crowley reading Aziraphale something lewd, and Aziraphale pretends not to be into it, but she is. She’s like “the goat herder, now revealed to be a handsome maiden, did WHAT to the chaste and God-fearing daughter of the marquis, who just wanted to read alone under the sole tree on the moor? I say, that sounds quite unlikely, Crowley.”

7: Gustave Courbet - detail of Le Sommeil. It’s just a couple of hereditary enemies/roommates/gal pals going along with Heaven and Hell as far as they can.

8: Couldn’t find out who painted it, but it seems to be (m) Aziraphale and (F) Crowley perhaps just before Crowley’s fall?

9: I mean. We’ve all read those fics. I’m not saying I’m proud of it (not saying I’m not) but some of them are actually very well written and I’ve learned a lot about herpetology. It’s clear that people have had wet thoughts about angels and serpents for a very long time. Gosh.
