Yahoo! On the Road Q&A: Twenty One Pilots
by: lyndsey parker
Yahoo! On the Road tour's Seattle show on an epic bill with Gossip, Willy Moon, and Capital Cities. There, they gave 1000 percent to their excited Northwest fans, doing backflips, climbing up the balconies, leaping off speakers, rocking matching skeleton hoodies, doing a double drum solo, and even giving a fake encore. To say these guys have personality would be putting it pretty mildly.
Before Twenty One Pilots hit the stage running, Yahoo! Music caught up with Tyler and Josh in their Moore Theatre dressing room, and hopefully their wonderfully skewed personalities came shining through in the following transcript of their delightfully sarcastic interview. Someone really needs to give these guys their own "Monkees"-style sitcom. But until that gets greenlit, read on...
YAHOO! OTR: So tell me how you guys formed.
JOSH: What's cool is like we knew each other probably over a year before we started playing music together, and just hung out all the time. We wanted to play music together, and then things kind of fell into place for that to happen. It's good to be friends before you start to play in a band; that's my opinion.
YAHOO! OTR: I heard a rumor that you met on Craigslist. Was it the "Casual Encounters" section?
TYLER: It was actually a business encounter. We like to say we're not in a band, we're actually like businessmen that travel around…and show you our business.
JOSH: I forget how we came up with that. I think it's to impress girls. 'cause sometimes if you go up and say, "Yeah, I'm in a band," girls' parents are not impressed.
TYLER: Whenever you talk to the parents and you say, "I'm in a band," it's like, "Okay, yeah, what are you really going to do with your life?" So we decided to just tell girls' parents that we're businessmen. And they'd further ask questions about our business and we'd just quickly change the subject.
JOSH: Very quickly.
YAHOO! OTR: Things seemed to have moved very quickly for you guys…
JOSH: Actually you know what? It's basically been just two years.
TYLER: I have no idea what month it is. Was it? Dude, happy anniversary.
JOSH: Happy anniversary, man.
YAHOO! OTR: Aw. How are you guys going to celebrate your anniversary?
TYLER: Make out.
JOSH: We probably won't do that, just kidding.
YAHOO! OTR: Do you have any theories as to why things came together so quickly for Twenty One Pilots?
TYLER: There's a lot of bands out there that have a really long history of periods of time where they're in the van. I definitely want to hit on the fact that we did hit all those points, but we hit them in stride and we saw them come at us very quickly, so we've seen every step that we wanted to see, we made sure we didn't skip any of those steps.
YAHOO! OTR: Do you get flak for supposedly not "paying your dues" or something?
TYLER: No, no, there's just so many bands out there, there's so many bands we know, friends of ours, that are doing the sleeping-in-a-van-in-a-Wal-Mart-parking-lot thing. And we're fortunate enough to move forward. We're in the Sam's Club parking lot now.
JOSH: We're members.
TYLER: But as things start to move quickly for us, I think that it's a testament to our live show and how ready we are for any sort of opportunity that comes our way, because we've played every type of show that there is to play, and we're ready for that moment.
YAHOO! OTR: What's the weirdest type of gig you've played?
TYLER: Some older couple will hire us to play in their bedroom. Stuff like that.
YAHOO! OTR: Sounds fun.
TYLER: Also when we're playing locally, starting out, still no one really knows who to put us with. So we've done the whole hip-hop bill, we've done a bunch of heavy metal bills — which was a lot of fun, actually. In a way, I'm just now kind of realizing it as I step back, we've drawn from those different scenes as we came up. There's obviously an element of hip-hop in the music but we've taken and been inspired by the metal scene. I mean, you wouldn't hear it in our music, but you'll never see a harder-working band than a metal band, so it's just all those things we've held onto, and they've been inspiring to us.
JOSH: We'll play with anyone and we learned to adapt to whatever the environment, whether it's a different club or venue or, you know, different bands that we play with, and try to figure out what kind of people are coming out to see those bands and how we can come across to them as the band that we are, without really sacrificing anything about ourselves.
YAHOO! OTR: What would be your dream gig, in terms of opening for someone. [silence] Celine Dion?
JOSH: Probably.
TYLER: No, just her band.
JOSH: Yeah, it would be karaoke for everybody; everybody sings along with it, like Celine's words are on the screen, but playing along with her actual band.
TYLER: There are certain bands that I like, and it's hard for me, with Josh and I kind of being a new band; we almost have like an underdog mentality. It's hard for me not to want to destroy whoever plays after us. It's hard for us not to feel a tiny bit competitive.
JOSH: So why don't the others bands just be better?
TYLER: I'd just like to headline. That's probably my best answer.

Kamala Harris 4 President: Is She ready 4 Prime Time?
Tumblr media
Joe Biden has literally slipped on a banana peel. Following his dismal performance at the 1st Presidential Debate, he has made a series of blunders that now has him under a microscope. It's gotten so bad, that folks are criticizing the way he walks up the stairs of Air Force One... Biden made several appearances to shore up his Social Capital, but few were effective. From his interview w/ George Stephanopoulos, to his 'Big Boy NATO Summit' to his telephone interview on MSNBC's 'Morning Joe'; Joe Biden has raised more questions than providing answers. An increasing number of Congressional Democrats, Elites, & Big Money Donors- from Chuck Schumer, to Jeffrey Katzenberg, George Clooney & Rob Reiner are asking him to step down. Political Pundits across many platforms have expressed publicly how Joe Biden is weakening Congressional Democrats running for Re-Election.
Biden has been adamant about staying in Office, but has recently said that he's open to discussion. Black Politicians & Democratic Shills like Whoopi Goldberg, Roland Martin, Symone Sanders, D.L. Hughley & Joy Reid continue to Circle the Wagon, but hardcore Biden advocates like Joe Scarborough & Van Jones have admitted that his Poll #s are damaging the overall Democratic Party. The Question being asked is: if Joe Biden steps down, WHO is capable of defeating Donald Trump in the General Election? California Governor Gavin Newsome, Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer, Illinois Governor J. B. Pritzker, Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro, & Maryland Governor Wes Moore have been tossed around; but none of them have enough National Recognition to compete against Trump. 'The View's' Sunny Hostin has stated that Black Women will abandon the Democratic Party if Kamala Harris is not chosen as the heir apparent, but is Kamala Harris 'Presidential Material'?
Presidential Politics IS a Blood Sport. When a Candidate runs for POTUS, their Record of Service is on full display. There is a reason why Kamala Harris hasn't been mentioned before now. Many assume that she is being left out because of her Race, but Political Pundits admit that NO ONE really likes her. Kamala has wore several hats during her Political Career, but she has few accomplishments to tout for her Years of Service. As District Attorney of San Francisco, Attorney General of California, & U.S. Senate Member, Kamala Harris has been detrimental to Black Californians. Her Record is one of disenfranchisement & incarceration of Blackfolk. Harris, Nancy Pelosi, & Dianne Feinstein share responsibility for the Current State of Black America in The Bay Area. She was originally touted as the '1st South Asian (i.e. Indian) American Woman elected into the U.S. Senate', but has somehow been mysteriously transformed into a 'Black Woman'.
For The Record, Kamala Harris is neither Afrikan American or Black. Her Mother is Brahmin & her Father is Brahmin & Irish Jamaican; her Father's Irish side were Slaveholders. She was born in Oakland & later relocated to Berkeley, after her parents separated. Kamala was bused to a predominantly White Elementary School, before her Mother relocated to an affluent Community in Montreal. She attended Junior High & High School in Montreal before returning to America, to attend Howard University. THIS is where Kamala's 'Black Experience' begins. Rumor has it that she became a Sweetheart of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Inc. (a Kappa Diamond) & later pledged Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. Post Grad, Kamala returned to The Bay Area, where she became associated w/ Democratic Party Power Broker & former San Francisco Mayor Willie Brown. The former Mayor positioned Kamala on a couple of Commissions (that paid $400K over 5Yrs) & her 1st run to become San Francisco District Attorney.
Kamala Harris has been very fortunate during her Political Career, but her tenure as Vice President has exposed her flaws. She's had a revolving door of Staffers that cite factions & infighting w/i her Camp. Harris has been described as crass & vulgar towards her Staff- dropping F- bombs & denigrating them during Meetings. Former Speech Writers say they were confounded by her inability to follow Scripts. Aside from Abortion Rights, no one can point to an Issue that Harris has championed w/ consistency. Her tenure as Vice President has been compared w/ Dan Quayle's. Joe Biden put Kamala in charge of the Southern Border, but he was forced to issue an Executive Order; to clean up her inability to stop the flood of Illegal Immigrants coming from All Four Corners of The World. Kamala Harris is not known for promoting Pet Policy Projects, like Al Gore or Michelle Obama; She's better known for:
Wearing Chuck Taylors w/ Pearls
Putting hot sauce on her Collard Greens & washing them in the bathtub (???)
Cos Playing Black Americans &
Cackling when she's flummoxed
Currently, Kamala Harris is a weaker opponent against Donald Trump, than Joe Biden. She's only being considered, because the Biden- Harris Campaign Fund can't be accessed if another group of Candidates are selected. Somewhere between $100M- $300M is at stake. A DNC Super PAC is withholding another $90M in anticipation of Biden stepping down. Michelle Obama's name has been tossed around as a potential Candidate for POTUS, but she has said on several occasions that she's NOT interested. I would be surprised if she changed her mind. Personally, I don't think ANY MAN can beat Donald Trump & the only Woman that could give Trump a Real Fight, is Tulsi Gabbard. She's a Generational Candidate that has the pedigree of Military Service, plus the Political & Social Capital needed to get Voters to the Voting Booths. Tulsi is far from being 'The Perfect Candidate', but People can visualize her having meaningful discussions w/ World Leaders. By contrast, Kamala Harris looks like a cartoon character on The World Stage; few actually believe that she can command the respect of Vladimir Putin, Xi Jinping, & EU Leaders.
At this point, Democrats are in a No Win situation. Joe Biden campaigned in 2020 as a One Term President, but now he dares ANYONE to take him on at the Democratic National Convention. His selfishness & egocentrism has damaged the Democratic Party's chance of holding on to The White House. He says that he wouldn't have chosen Kamala Harris to be his VP if she wasn't capable of being President, but We KNOW that he only chose her because Black Women DEMANDED a Black Female Running Mate, in return for their vote. Ironically, Kamala doesn't fill that slot figuratively or literally. She let Black Women know early in her 2020 Campaign that she wasn't going to do ANYTHING SPECIFICALLY for Black Americans. Like Joe Biden, Harris offered a 'Lift Act' that promised Blackfolk more of the same 'Rising Tide' Democratic jargon. Despite this, roughly 86% of Black Americans supported the Biden- Harris Ticket; hoping this Administration would reward their loyalty & support w/ Real Policy.
Like Joe Biden, Kamala Harris NEEDS the Black Vote to win the General Election. The Problem is, Democrats have NO INTENTION of offering anything tangible to Black America. Despite the Doom & Gloom scenarios being pushed by Democratic Shills, an increasing number of Black Americans are refusing to vote Blue w/o getting something tangible in return. Democratic Elites thought they could play 'Chicken' w/ Blackfolk, but are beginning to realize how serious We are. Black Democratic Shills have been trying to corral The Black Vote, but they don't have the same influence that they held in previous years. Kamala Harris didn't help her Cause, when she said: 'We all know about the 20 Acres & a Mule'... Her casual disregard of Black Specific Issues rivals Joe Biden's. The Fact that Democrats have been forced to admit Biden's physical & mental decline will set The Party back at least 4 Years.
As I said before, Black America sits in the Catbird Seat! The rest of the Country may dread a 2nd Trump Presidency, but it's just 'Another Day in The Life' for Us. Our Ancestors survived 8 Years of Woodrow Wilson & over 50 Years of J. Edgar Hoover. We KNOW what a Dictator looks like. We also know that Every City will burn before We comply w/ The Heritage Foundation's 'Wish List' known as Project 2025. We just have to Get On Code & Stand Our Ground. Unlike the Millions of Colonists that occupy This Land, We're INDIGENOUS & have a Spiritual Connection to it; Millennia of Blood & Bones in The Soil. Unlike the newcomers, Perseverance is in Our Genetic Memory. Donald Trump is just the Latest 'Flavor of The Month'... We already survived a Trump Administration.
The acknowledgement of Joe Biden's decline puts Democrats in a bad position so late into the Election Season. It's not even clear if Dems can take him off The Ballot in several States. The fact that Kamala Harris cannot make a seamless transition into The Oval Office is creating a Civil War w/i The Party. I heard someone classify this 'War' as a battle between Black Shills & White Donors; The Shills want Biden to Stay, while The Donors want him to Resign. If Kamala Harris was truly 'Ready for Primetime', Sunny Hostin wouldn't have to say anything- EVERYONE would be on The Same Page.
-Ultimately, Money Talks.

"Oh, no-- don't--" oh, no. No, "Natalie, he's-- he's licking his fingers," no. God, no. Monk waved a hand for a wipe, though what he was hoping to wipe away was maybe the... the... oh, the feeling. Ugh. The feeling of this guy, he gave Monk the creeps. Seriously. He didn't think Stottlemeyer actually wanted him interviewing this man, he didn't -- no. No.
"That's OK, Adrian. You're OK," Natalie promised.
Adrian did not feel OK. "I'm meant to interview him, Natalie. I'm - I'm meant to - shake his hand," a grand gesture in Nathan's direction like he was flatly out of earshot, "This is - I know what this is. Captain Stottlemeyer's trying to get under my skin. I told him he missed a spot while he was flossing this morning, he's- he's joshing me, he's pulling my leg, Natalie, we gotta turn this down." Seriously. You can't play into this sort of thing. He told her, "It's a power move."
"Adrian. This man witnessed the murder."
Yes. Yes, that. That was true. He, um. He turned back to Mr Young, who -- "Oh, God," he turned away like it might not be happening if he was not witnessing it. Nathan had just put his hand, the one whose fingers he'd just licked, back into the cookie tray just - just willy nilly. Like a madman. He probably even committed the murder, that kind of person, they didn't have a care in the world, cold-blooded killers, they don't - they don't care about the sharing the cookies (not that he would have taken any), this man. Adrian had solved it. No need for investigating. Put him behind bars. Right?
Natalie continued to watch him, like she expected him to introduce himself.
"Natalie," he said, betrayed and hurt.
"Mr Young?" Natalie turned away from him (Monk used the back of his hand, held flat, to shield his eyes from making contact Nathan Young, "My name is Natalie Teeger, and this is Adrian Monk. He's the man who police wanted you to speak to today. It's really good of you to wait for us."
He hated this job. He wanted to quit and move to Hawaii. It didn't matter about the sand. He'd take a vacuum. They'd be thrilled, he'd be welcomed as a cleanliness... rescuer, he could do Hawaii.

Nov. 4 (UPI) -- Authorities in Arkansas said a married Missouri couple has been arrested in connection to the murder of a missing pregnant woman and her fetus after their remains were found in separate locations.
Police have been looking for Ashley Bush, who was a mother of three as well as 31 weeks pregnant, since the afternoon of Halloween when she was last seen in the passenger seat of a tan pickup truck driven by a woman described as White in her 40s with shoulder-length brown hair.
Authorities said the woman went by the name "Lucy" and that Bush, 33, met her online while looking for a job she could do from home. Lucy picked Bush up Monday morning at a Handi-Mart convenience store in Maysville, Ark., on the border with Oklahoma, under the premise of taking her to the job interview in nearby Bentonville.
Benton County Sheriff Shawn Holloway told reporters during a press conference Thursday that police have found the bodies of Bush and her baby, named Valkyrie Grace Willis, dead in Missouri.
Holloway would not go into specifics, but said the two bodies were found in separate locations, with the baby's remains being discovered Wednesday and the body of Bush being found Thursday. Authorities believe the mother was shot to death.
"Over my career this has been one of the most horrific cases that I have been personally involved with," he said.
The McDonald County Sheriff's Office in neighboring Missouri said the human remains were discovered when a search warrant was executed on Laughlin Ridge Road in connection to the investigation.
Benton County Prosecutor Nathan Smith said in the press conference that police have arrested Amber and Jamie Waterman of Jane, Mo., who are being held at the McDonald County Jail on kidnapping charges.
Smith explained he expects further and overlapping state and federal charges to be filed against the couple as the investigation progresses and jurisdiction over the case is decided.
He also would not elaborate on the circumstances surrounding their killings nor state how Jamie Waterman was involved other than to say that they had evidence to show culpability. A motive was under investigation.
Smith added that they were investigating whether Bush and her baby were killed in Arkansas or Missouri.
"This is just a reminder that there is evil in the world, that people do evil things," he said. "That someone would prey upon a pregnant woman at her most vulnerable state is just unimaginable, but, unfortunately, that is just the world we live in."
In a statement to 4029 News, Bush's fiancé, Josh Willis, said he was "disgusted."
"I just lost my wife and daughter," he said. "I've lost all hope in humanity."

31 Days of Horror - Day 25 - Five Nights at Freddy's
25/10/23
I remember the first time I decided to engage with Five Nights at Freddy’s as a series. I think it might be where my love of horror truly started, although I didn’t branch out into movies for a while longer, as far as I can remember. With my grandma, I had just dropped off a few presents to my cousin for his birthday, and when I got back, I decided to be brave and watch something scary; I believe this was just around the release of the fourth game, and so, the game’s popularity was at its highest - I was so very terrified of the idea of the series, but incredibly intrigued. Instead of watching someone playing the game, I turned to the Game Theory videos, where I binged them all, curled up on my sofa terrified. After watching one, I couldn’t help but watch more, and in that moment, I fell in love with the series.
I have been excited for the Fnaf movie since inception, from the vague rumours, cancelled ideas and eventual release of the movie. While I will get into spoilers momentarily, I will say I loved this film, I was smiling widely for the majority of this film, excited by every little detail! I don’t think the film was perfect, there are a myriad of issues I had, but I can’t say I didn’t have an amazing time watching it. Upon leaving the film, I was still deeply excited about it, and found myself knowing it would be received decisively - which it appears I was correct about - but I think for newer people, or fans of all areas of the franchise, not just the games, it is a very pleasant and fun film!
Okay, onto the film itself. The plot takes elements from the first three games, mostly the first, with a few characters plucked from elsewhere. However, the film tells its own unique story, which I enjoyed a lot! I remember before the film came out watching as people speculated about how Mike and William didn’t recognise one another when they first met, which of course was simply explained by this being a completely different timeline - these characters aren’t related. Instead, it explores its own story, using the games as a framework for telling it! A while back, I had an interview for a uni, where they asked me what my favourite film adaptation of a novel was. Upon reflection, we discussed how the best adaptations rise from doing something unique with the source material - why watch the film, when instead you could simply read the book that does everything beat by beat the same? Therefore, I believe that regardless of what the outcome is, and how fans react, this is a good adaptation.
Most of the characters in this are great - our lead, Mike, is portrayed in a very fun way by Josh Hutcherson, and I found him to be an incredibly compelling protagonist, his story slowly unravels across the film, and he was a believable character for sure! I especially loved his relationships with other characters, mainly his sister as portrayed by Piper Rubio and Vanessa, played by Elizabeth Lail. Everything about him was great, and I enjoyed the vibrant dream sequences he endures, alongside the turmoil he is forced into. Mike is obsessive, he’s lost in dreams that his relationship with reality grows to be warped, he loses track of what really matters to him, and it makes him all the more interesting.
Another aspect of the film I loved was the animatronics. Although I have read some complaints about them, I found them to look amazing, their dance sequences especially, and the score that accompanies it is super good! They are incredibly menacing when they need to be, yet at other times they are endearing! To me, they shined both at being appealing and scary, and their movements really sold me on that! Films such as Willy’s Wonderland and The Banana Splits Movie have animatronics that look like people in suits, in contrast this film makes them feel inhuman, their movements are robotic and eerie, there is an unpredictability to them. One sequence in particular shows them as being kind, they build a fort together, and it helps for the audience to drop our guards somewhat. I have seen a whole heap of criticism for this sequence, with people suggesting the silly and campy tone to it ruins the entire film, but to me, it shows a unique side to them that reflects what they are - animatronic mascots designed to entice children. Duality is seeped into them, and they are creatures that have no control over themselves, they are both children, and horrific murderous ghosts.
In contrast to the aforementioned sequence, I think the scene where we watch a group attempt to trash the pizzeria, only to be picked off by the animatronics is very scary. Honestly, my only complaint with it is that I wish we saw more stuff like this in the film. Its use of shadows is scary, it makes us dread looking around the frame, it creates a deep sense of dread and fear. All of these kills rule too - it allows them to get creative, without being too graphic in what they show, instead, much like the games, it leaves the rest to our imaginations, which is likely scarier than what they could do! Each animatronic of the main four gets to shine here, and it gives them all personality that I adore! Like I said, I just kind of wish we got to see more stuff like this - a rare time I wish we saw a longer film actually, it feels like there is so much potential, but I feel this only highlights my love for it! Wanting more can only be a good thing.
While watching, I was constantly excited about the set design, from the props to, of course, the pizzeria set itself. It felt so lived in and real, it was ancient and dark, while bearing the nostalgic flare and charm that is needed for the place! Every time we returned to it, I could hardly contain my excitement.
I want to end on a positive note, so I feel like going through some issues I had now is good! For one, I wish we saw more of Golden Freddy, and I guess just the other animatronics doing stuff too! I loved everything we got, from the scary to the funny, but it only left me hungry for more! Everything about them worked for me, and I guess it just felt like they were underutilised at times.
Some plot points also felt like they were hurtled through - I imagine when writing this film, a lot of issues arose as far as the lore of the games, and how it should be incorporated. There is a point where you reach a crossroads; retelling aspects like having children haunting the suits is a boring reveal that most people know, but the characters don’t, so how can it be integrated in a way that the characters understanding makes sense, but the audience doesn’t get bored of the drawn out spiel. Ultimately, I just felt like it didn’t take long for Mike to get on board, which isn’t inherently bad, but I felt like it all fell into place too quickly. Like I said, I get why! They did what they could with such a tricky dilemma.
Vanessa is an interesting character. Her design in the games is the most interesting thing about her - the bunny suit is instantly recognisable, and distracts from the sometimes confused and muddied character. I still like her a lot. In this film, they took a different direction, which I liked! It feels like in a sequel they could still follow through with her bunny form, which could work similarly to how Afton controls the animatronics. I did also enjoy the subversion of the twist, where William is her father instead, and I was pretty proud of myself for theorising about it when we first met her! However, she sometimes still felt kind of one note and bland, I can’t quite explain it! She has so many interesting pieces, yet I feel the mystery of who she is sometimes took away from her character.
Finally, I felt like there was an overuse of the kid actors, rather than the animatronics! I get what they were going for, and I enjoyed them in the dream sequences which felt creepypasta inspired in a really good way! However, it does sometimes take away from the tense atmosphere for me when instead of the animatronics, we are staring at a group of children. I think I wouldn’t mind so much if there were some more sequences of the animatronics killing, but alas, it is what it is! Now onto a positive, one I have had to sit on a lot! That being Springtraps depiction. I love the character a lot, he is one of the best looking animatronics in my opinion, at least, his first appearance was! In the novels, which I have only read snippets of, I found the way he was written to not be very scary or interesting, with his dialogue being clunky and pretty bland! Here, we also see Springtrap talking, however, for me, it works here. Likely, this comes from better dialogue from him, and the amazing acting by Matthew Lillard, who I love so much and was very excited to see in this film. I am a huge fan of Scooby-Doo and Scream, so when it was announced he was playing William Afton, I couldn’t wait! And yeah, he puts on his crazy performance, and I loved it a lot. Not to mention how amazing I found Springtrap to look here! Once again, I just wish there was more of him! I enjoy his presence being limited, sure, it makes him scarier! The whole film he is built up as this mythical figure, and his final reveal is terrifying, but it didn’t feel like enough for me. Maybe this is just my desire for more Matthew Lillard always, but I would have enjoyed seeing him more. Although, his acting as her stabs his daughter is haunting, I can’t wait to see it again when it releases on streaming, because wow. There is a possibility that this William Afton is my favourite, but I’m not too sure just yet.
As I’ve been writing this, I’ve watched more reviews pour in for the film, a lot bad, some good, and I find myself hoping that as more people watch it, they too will enjoy this. At the very least, people enjoy it enough for a sequel to be made, because wow I am desperate for a sequel! This film leaves so many open doors and possibilities, and I would be delighted for it to get more praise as well as another instalment. I almost feel like this is a film that will see a renaissance in a few years, where people will fall in love with it after knowing what to expect more. I don’t want to dwell on what others are thinking, because I loved it! This is one I am definitely wanting a physical copy of, and I can’t wait to rewatch it again soon.

Canada Tests the Limits of Its Immigration Strategy (WSJ) High levels of immigration made Canada the second-fastest growing developed-world economy in recent years, trailing only the U.S., as it competed to attract high-skilled workers from around the world. Now, the newcomers are starting to strain the country’s ability to absorb them—adding fuel to an overheated housing market, stressing the healthcare system and clogging up roads in cities unaccustomed to traffic jams. It is also prompting immigrants to think twice about choosing Canada. Karanvir Singh, 27, originally from New Delhi and a trained accountant, arrived in the Toronto area last November on a work permit, after four years in Dublin. He said he is having second thoughts, based on housing prices, the cost of food and lackluster public transit. The country of 40 million people last year welcomed more than one million permanent and temporary immigrants, Statistics Canada said. That influx generated a population growth of 2.7%; the increase of 1.05 million people was nearly equivalent to last year’s increase in the U.S., a country with more than eight times Canada’s population.
Trump Indictment, Part IV (NYT) Another grand jury, another indictment. For the fourth time in as many months, former President Donald J. Trump was charged on Monday with serious crimes and what was once unprecedented has now become surreally routine. The novelty of a former leader of the United States being called a felon has somehow worn off. Not that the sweeping 98-page indictment handed up in Georgia accusing him of corruptly trying to reverse the state’s 2020 election results was any less momentous. Multiple prosecutors have now cumulatively laid out an alleged presidential crime spree of epic proportions, complete with tangled intrigues, mysterious co-conspirators and intersecting subplots. The Georgia indictment went further than previous ones by charging 18 others with joining a criminal enterprise with the former president, including associates like Rudolph W. Giuliani, Mark Meadows, Sidney Powell, Jeffrey Clark and John Eastman. Yet most Americans made up their minds about Mr. Trump long before prosecutors like Fani T. Willis or Jack Smith weighed in, polls have shown. He is, depending on the perspective, a serial lawbreaker finally being brought to justice or a victim of persecution by partisans intent on keeping him out of office. “The accumulated indictments are kind of a white noise for voters,” said Sarah Longwell, a Republican political consultant who has organized opposition to Mr. Trump and conducts weekly focus groups with voters. “They can’t tell the difference between Georgia and Jack Smith because it all blurs together in one long news cycle of Trump’s-in-trouble.”
Number of dead from Maui wildfires reaches 106, as governor warns there could be scores more (AP) The number of deaths caused by the Maui wildfires stood at 106 Tuesday, a figure that is likely to increase as search crews comb neighborhoods where flames moved as fast as a mile a minute. The blazes that consumed most of the historic town of Lahaina are already the deadliest in the U.S. in more than a century. In an interview with CBS, Gov. Josh Green estimated searchers will find the remains of 10 to 20 people per day until they finish their work. “And it’s probably going to take 10 days. It’s impossible to guess, really,” he said.
Currency chaos (Foreign Policy) Following a dramatic drop in the ruble on Monday, Russia’s Central Bank hiked interest rates by 350 basis points, to 12 percent, at an emergency meeting on Tuesday. Economists hope the controversial decision will tighten Moscow’s monetary situation and counter fears of skyrocketing inflation. However, experts worry that the weakening ruble, which hit a 16-month low this week, could still further hurt the nation’s already isolated economy. The Kremlin isn’t the only one spinning its financial wheels in the hopes of finding traction. The shock primary election victory of populist Javier Milei in Argentina on Sunday tanked the nation’s peso by as much as 18 percent on Monday. The Latin American country’s central bank raised interest rates to 118 percent that day to better protect the currency.
Life for Convicts in Russia’s Army (NYT) In a month spent at the front line, Aleksandr, an ex-convict serving in the Russian Army, hadn’t seen a single Ukrainian soldier and had barely fired a shot. The threat of death came from a distance. Sent to guard against a potential river crossing in southern Ukraine, his hastily formed unit, made up almost entirely of inmates, endured weeks of relentless bombardment, sniper attacks and ambushes. The marshy, flat terrain offered no cover beyond the burned-out hulks of cottages. Aleksandr claims that out of the 120 men in his unit, only about 40 remain alive. These survivors are being heavily pressured by the Russian military to remain on the battlefield at the end of their six-month contracts, according to Aleksandr and accounts provided to The New York Times from two other Russian inmates fighting on the front line. “We are being sent to a slaughter,” Aleksandr said in a series of audio messages from the Kherson region, referring to his commanders. “We are not human to them, because we are criminals.” His account provides a rare window into the fighting in Ukraine from a Russian inmate’s perspective. Units made up of convicts have become one of the cornerstones of Russian military strategy as the prolonged fighting has decimated the country’s regular forces. Aleksandr’s descriptions could not be independently confirmed, but they aligned with accounts from Ukrainian soldiers and Russian prisoners of war who said that Moscow used inmates essentially as cannon fodder.
Massive explosion at gas station in Russia’s Dagestan kills 35, injures scores more (AP) A massive explosion at a gas station in Russia’s southern republic of Dagestan killed 35 people and injured scores more, Russian officials said Tuesday. Russia’s Emergency Ministry reported Tuesday that a total of 105 people were injured, and 35 of them died. The explosion took place Monday night on the outskirts of Makhachkala, the region’s capital. A fire started at a car repair shop and spread to a nearby gas station, prompting a blast, Russia’s state news agency RIA Novosti reported.
As the Black Sea becomes a battleground, one Ukrainian farmer doesn’t know how he’ll sell his grain (AP) Victor Tsvyk harvested 4,800 tons of wheat this month, but after Russia exited a wartime deal that allowed Ukraine to ship grain to the world, he has no idea where his produce will go. Or how his beloved farm will survive. Tsvyk, who normally exported up to 90% of his harvest from the southern port of Odesa, faces a crisis: His yield is 20% higher compared with last year, which would have been a boon in times of peace, but in war, exorbitant logistics costs and Russia’s blockage of the ports has made shipping grain too expensive for him. Tsvyk is one of thousands of Ukrainian farmers facing a similar dilemma. Tsvyk doesn’t know what he will do with his harvest or how he will keep paying his 77 workers. “It’s too painful to talk about,” the 67-year-old said when asked how he envisions the future.
Modi says India’s economy will be among the top three in the world within five years (AP) Prime Minister Narendra Modi said India’s economy will be among the top three in the world within five years, as he marked 76 years of independence from British rule on Tuesday. “When poverty decreases in a country, the power of the middle class increases considerably,” he said. “In the next five years, I promise India will be among the top three economies in the world.” His statement comes after reports last year from S&P Global and Morgan Stanley forecast that India’s economy would overtake Japan and Germany’s to become the world’s third largest by 2030. They said India’s economic boom will be driven by offshoring, investment in manufacturing, growing digital infrastructure and energy transition. India’s $3.5 trillion economy surpassed the United Kingdom’s last year to become the fifth largest. Modi said he was confident that when India marks 100 years of independence in 2047, it will do so as a developed nation.
Taliban Fighters, Unsettled by Peace, Seek New Battles Abroad (NYT) As a child studying in a madrasa in Afghanistan, Mohammad Khalid Tahir dreamed of waging jihad. By the time he was a teenager, he had joined the Taliban and celebrated when they seized power from the U.S.-backed government two years ago. But the high from that victory did not last. Reassigned as a soldier in the capital, he frequently complained that he was bored and longed to return to his life’s purpose, according to his family. So this spring, he did—but across the border in Pakistan. “Our only expectation is to be martyred,” Mr. Tahir says in a video of him en route to Pakistan that was viewed by The New York Times. About a month later, he was killed by Pakistani security forces, his relatives said. As a generation of fighters raised in war now finds itself stuck in a country at peace, hundreds of young Taliban soldiers have crossed illegally into Pakistan to battle alongside an insurgent group, according to Taliban members, local leaders and security analysts. Like Mr. Tahir, many say they are determined to continue waging jihad—wherever in the world it takes them. The exodus has renewed longstanding fears about violent extremism spilling out of Afghanistan under the Taliban and destabilizing neighboring countries or one day reaching Western targets. Countries from Russia and China to the United States and Iran have all raised alarms about the possible resurgence in Afghanistan of terrorist groups, like Al Qaeda and the Islamic State, with more global ambitions.
China suspends youth jobless data after record high readings (Reuters) China suspended publication of its youth jobless data on Tuesday, saying it needed to review the methodology behind the closely watched benchmark, which has hit record highs in one of many warning signs for the world’s second-largest economy. The decision announced shortly after the release of weaker-than-expected factory and retail sales data sparked rare backlash on social media amid growing frustration about employment prospects in the country. It also marks the latest move by Chinese authorities to restrict access to key data and information, a trend that is unnerving overseas investors. The most recent NBS data on youth unemployment, published last month, showed the jobless rate jumping to a record high of 21.3% in June. “If you close your eyes then it doesn’t exist,” one user wrote on microblogging site Weibo, where a hashtag related to the decision received over 10 million views. “There is a saying called ‘burying your head in the sand’,” wrote another user.
The Deluge Facing Africa’s Leaders Is Going to Get Worse (NYT/Opinion) An uninterrupted swath of African countries from the Atlantic Ocean to the Red Sea is now under military rule. Mali, Guinea, Chad, Sudan, Burkina Faso and, most recently, Niger. Some of the putschists deposed elected leaders, like Niger’s president, Mohamed Bazoum. Others forestalled elections or even overthrew the leaders they had installed. Up to now, officials in Washington, Brussels, London and Addis Ababa, where the African Union is headquartered, have responded to each successive military takeover as its own crisis. Some observers see conspiracies in Moscow or terrorist networks at work, but in truth Russia’s Wagner Group and local jihadis are just opportunists. In each country recently taken over by generals, corruption had hollowed out civil administration and undermined politicians’ credibility, while soldiers have been empowered by foreign patrons wanting military bases, cooperation against terrorism and control of migration. Democracy can’t survive if it can’t deliver results. Like the rest of the world, Africans want jobs, affordable food and housing, quality education and health care. They want peace and security and the chance to set the course of their own nations’ future without being told what they can and cannot do by foreign powers. Throughout much of Africa, citizens also overwhelmingly want democracy, but they get frustrated when elected leaders don’t deliver. When people do welcome a coup, it’s often because they see it as the path to a better elected government.

Having some thoughts about the references and inspirations used for the Bad Batch’s designs.
So Boba Fett is my absolute favorite character and Temeura Morrison was perfect casting. I went to see the 2008 TCW movie in theaters because I was so excited to see him again, even if he was animated. You can imagine my disappointment. Whoever was on screen was not Temeura Morrison. You could sort of see a resemblance if you squinted and didn’t think too hard about it. They replaced Temeura with Racially Ambiguous G.I. Joe. If I didn’t know better and someone told me the animated clones are space Italians from the moon of New Jersey I would buy it. One Million Brothers Pizzeria and Italian Bistro. Not that there’s something wrong with being space Italian, I just don’t think it’s the right choice for the Fetts. The design got slightly improved by season 7 but it still bugs the hell out of me.
Tumblr media
I did eventually get into the show later and (of course) got invested in the clones. Unfortunately, they were largely sidelined by the Jedi storylines. Out of the two new main characters created for TCW, Ahsoka definitely got more development and focus than Rex. When they announced The Bad Batch, I was excited to see a show specifically devoted to the clones… at least that’s what it said on the tin. We have all seen what lurks beneath those stylish helmets.
Jango Fett, you are NOT the father.
So who is?
Based on interviews with Filoni, it sounds like the Bad Batch was a George Lucas idea. And like all his ideas, it’s super derivative. The original trilogy directly lifted elements from sci fi serials, westerns, and samurai movies, more specifically Kurosawa films like The Hidden Fortress. For The Bad Batch character designs, the influence is obviously American action and adventure movies.
Now let’s get specific. Bad Batch, who’s your daddy?
Hunter
Tumblr media
Sylvester Stallone as Rambo in First Blood 1982. That bandana has become an integral part of the iconic action hero look. You see a character wearing one and it’s a visual shorthand for either “this character is a tough guy” like Billy played by Sonny Landham in Predator 1987, or “this character thinks he is/wants to be a tough guy” like Brand played by Josh Brolin in The Goonies 1985 or Edward Frog played by Corey Feldman in The Lost Boys 1987.
Tumblr media
Hunter’s model is closest to the original clone base. If you look closely you will see the eyebrows are straighter with a much lower angle to the arch. His nose is also not the same shape as a standard clone like Rex, including a narrower bridge. It’s certainly not Temeura Morrison’s nose. Remember what I said about space Italians? It didn’t take much to push the existing clone design to resemble an specific Italian man instead of a specific Māori man. The 23&Me came back, and Hunter inherited more than the bandana from Sylvester.
Crosshair
Tumblr media
The long narrow nose, the sharp cheekbones, the scowl. That’s no clone, that’s just animated Clint Eastwood. Not even Young and Hot Clint Eastwood from Rawhide 1959-1965. With that hair, I’m talking Gran Torino 2008. The man of few words schtick and family friendly toothpick in lieu of cigar are pure Eastwood as The Man With No Name from Sergio Leone’s spaghetti westerns A Fist Full of Dollars 1964, For a Few Dollars More 1965, and The Good the Bad and the Ugly 1966.
In a way, this is full circle because the actor Jeremy Bulloch took inspiration from Clint Eastwood for his performance as Boba Fett in ESB.
Wrecker
Tumblr media
In an interview Filoni lists the Hulk as an (obvious) inspiration for Wrecker. Ever seen the old Hulk tv show from 1978? Well take a look at the actor who played him, Lou Ferrigno. Would you look at that. Even has his papa’s nose.
You could make the argument that Wrecker was influenced by The Rock, an appropriately buff ‘n bald Polynesian (Samoan, not Maori) man. But look at him next his Fast and Furious costar Vin Diesel and tell me which one resembles Wrecker’s character model more.
Tumblr media
Tech
Tumblr media
Tech is a little trickier for me to place. If he has a more direct inspiration it must be something I haven’t seen. That said, his hairline is very Bruce Willis as John McClane in Die Hard 1988. His quippiness and large glasses remind me of Shane Black as Hawkins from Predator 1987. In terms of his face, he looks a but like the result of McClane and Hawkins deciding to settle down and start a family. Although, Tech’s biggest contributors are probably just everyone on TV Trope’s list for Smart People Wear Glasses.
And finally,
Echo
Tumblr media
Oh Echo. Considering he wasn’t created for the Bad Batch, he probably wasn’t based on a particular character or movie. But if I had to guess, his situation and appearance remind me a lot of Alex Murphy played by Peter Weller in Robocop 1987. However, Robocop explored the Man or Machine Identity Crisis with more nuance, depth, and dignity. Yikes.
The exact tropes and references used in The Bad Batch have been done successfully with characters who aren’t even human. Gizmo from Gremlins 2: The New Batch 1990 had a brief stint with the Rambo bandana. I could have picked any number of characters for Defining Feature Is Glasses but here is the most cursed version of Simon of Alvin and the Chipmunks. Suffer as I have. Marc Antony with his beloved Pussyfoot from Looney Tunes has the same tough guy with a soft center vibe as Wrecker and his Lula (also a kind of cat). Hell, in the same show we have Cad Bane sharing Cowboy Clint Eastwood with Crosshair. I actually think Bane makes a better Eastwood which is wild considering Crosshair has Eastwood’s entire face and Bane is blue.
Tumblr media
So we’ve established you don’t need your characters to look exactly like their inspirations to match their vibe. So why go through the trouble and cost of creating completely new character designs instead of recycling and altering assets they already had on hand? Just slap on a bandana, toothpick, goggles, and make Wrecker bigger than the others while he does a Hulk pose and you’re done. Based on the general reaction to Howzer it would have been a low effort slam dunk crowd pleaser.
But they didn’t do that.
So here’s the thing. I like the tropes used in The Bad Batch. I am a fan of action adventure movies from the 80s-90s, the sillier the better. I am part of the Bad Batch’s target audience. Considering what I know about Disney and Lucasfilm, I went in with low expectations. I genuinely don’t hate the idea of seeing references to these actors and media in The Bad Batch. I don’t think basing these characters on tropes was a bad idea. If anything it’s a solid starting point for building the characters.
The trouble is nothing got built on the foundation. The plot is directionless, the pacing is wacky, and the characters have nearly no emotional depth or defining character arcs. They just sort of exist without reacting much while the story happens around them. But I can excuse all of that. You don’t stay a fan of Star Wars as long as I have not being able to cherrypick and fill in the gaps. This show has a deeper issue that shouldn’t be ignored.
Why do the animated clones bear at best only a passing resemblance to their live action actor? In interviews, Filoni wouldn’t shut up but the technological advancements in the animation for season 7. So if they are updating things, why not try to make the clones a closer match to their source material? Why did they have to look like completely different people in The Bad Batch to be “unique”? Looking like Temeura Morrison would have no bearing on their special abilities and TCW proved you can have identical looking characters and still have them be distinct. In fact, that’s a powerful theme and the source of tragedy for the clones’ narrative overall.
Here’s Filoni’s early concept art of Crosshair, Wrecker, Tech, and Hunter. (Interesting but irrelevant: Wrecker seems to have a cog tattoo similar to Jesse’s instead of a scar. Wouldn’t it have been funny if they kept that so when they met in season 7 one if them could say something like “Hey we’re twins!” That’s a little clone humor. Just for you guys 😘)
Tumblr media
None of these drawings look like the clones in TCW, much less Temeura Morrison. Let’s be generous. Maybe Filoni struggles with drawing a real person’s likeness, as many people do. But he had to hand this off to other artists down the line whose job specifically involves making a stylized character resemble their actor. Yet the final designs missed the mark almost as much as this initial concept. Starting to seem as if the clones looking more like Temeura Morrison was never even on the table. It wasn’t a lack of creativity, skill or technical limitations on the part of the creative team. I don’t think there is an innocent explanation. They went out of their way to make the final product exactly how we got it.
This goes beyond homage. They could have made the same pop culture references and character tropes without completely stripping Temeura Morrison from the role he originated. It was a very purposeful choice to replace him with more immediately familiar actors from established franchises and films. It wouldn’t shock me if Filoni, Lucas, and anyone else calling the shots didn’t even think hard or care enough about the decision to immediately recognize a problem. And I don’t think they believed anyone else would either. At least no one whose opinion they cared about. Those faces are comfortingly familiar and proven bankable. They are what we’re all used to seeing after all. They’re white.
Lack of imagination, bad intentions, or simple ignorance doesn’t really matter in the end. The result is the same. Call it what it is. They replaced a man of color with a bunch of white guys. That’s by the book garden variety run of the mill whitewashing. There’s no debate worth having about it. For a fanbase that loves to nitpick things like whether or not it’s in character for Han to shoot first or Jeans Guy in the Mandalorian, we sure are quick to find excuses for clones who look nothing like their template. Why is that? If you don’t see the problem, congratulations. Your ass is showing. Pull your jeans up.

In this space, I usually share a few jokes and link to some of the pieces I’ve worked on in other internet places.
But things aren’t so funny right now. And my voice is not one we need to be listening to.
Black lives have been treated as less than for the entire history of this country. We’ve seen that from the very first moment that the United States became a country. We’ve seen that in the cases of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, Eric Garner, Stephon Clark, Philando Castile, and so many more, going on for far too long. We’ve seen that in our laws and our communities, in the redlining of suburbs and how, even now, black-owned businesses struggle to get approval for necessary payroll protection loans. There are two realities in this world, and your access and safety depend so heavily on the color of your skin.
So, rather than link to my work, I wanted to share the words of black players from the past few weeks. These are the voices that have been ignored or pushed aside to make people who look like me feel comfortable for far too long.
Gary Sheffield recently penned a piece in the Players Tribune about the racism and police brutality that he suffered first hand, and which -- during his playing career -- few wanted to hear about.
“So I ask you: Now do you believe me?
Because I stood alone then. But we stand together now – and that’s why I’m sharing my stories. For black people, these injustices are nothing new.
But for white people, people of privilege, this is revelatory. Their eyes have been forced open to view life through the same harsh lens as a person of color.”
The Mets’ Dominic Smith shared on Twitter how racism has impacted every day of his life, and that “Silence Kills.”
"As a black man in America you encounter racism on every level. Your parents prep you for it. They prep you for routine police stops. They prep you on how to talk to people with respect. When you have one strike against you [your skin color] you have to make the people you come across like you, and you do it with respect, with a smile, with love."
Giancarlo Stanton, Aaron Judge, Jackie Bradley Jr, Andrew McCutchen, CC Sabathia and more black MLB players came together to release a video where the players shared in one very important message:
“We’ve been told that our peaceful pleas were not made at the right time, in the right place, in the right way. We’ve been told to wait, but we remember when Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. warned us that the word wait has almost always meant never. We will wait no longer. We will make our voices louder. For all of us who can, and for all of those who could not.”
Braves Minor Leaguer Trey Harris joined the Effectively Wild podcast to talk about what it’s like to be black in America and in baseball, and the additional barriers players of color have to cross. Listen here.
Royals Minor Leaguer Nick Heath and Johns Hopkins third baseman Matt Ritchie went on the Baseball BBQ podcast to discuss the killings of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor, as well as how baseball can do a better job at being a more diverse and welcoming sport. Click here to listen.
Negro Leagues museum curator Ray Doswell recently gave an interview highlighting how far we’ve come, but also how far we still have to go.
“It's important to understand the history of it because none of these issues are new. These things have been happening for many, many decades. So you'll come here and you'll see some things that are mostly triumphant, but you'll see some things that you don't like, that should make you uncomfortable. Because it wasn't comfortable for those who had to go through it. And I hope that we're not overly romanticizing the story (of the Negro Leagues) too much. We're probably guilty of some of that. But there are folks who come in and get a sobering look at least at what that part of the story is, from roughly 1860 to 1960, and how that leads to the rest of the story.”
In The Athletic, retired baseball players including Ryan Howard, Jimmy Rollins, Dontrelle Willis, Doug Glanville, and Torii Hunter got together on a call to share their experiences. It’s a sobering look at just how different these worlds are, and it all comes down to if you’re black or white.
Jimmy Rollins said:
“Obviously, our white counterparts, they have a completely different view. They don’t have to grow up having that talk — and we all know what that talk is. They don’t have to get in a car, drive down the street knowing I didn’t do anything wrong, but this cop has been behind me for two blocks, something’s about to happen. They don’t have those fears. And every time something like this happens, as a player, you know exactly what is going on. When you get in the clubhouse, you do look at your counterparts, they’re going about their day as if nothing happened. And you’ve got three or four guys in the clubhouse looking at each other like, “Man. You see that? You know what that’s about. What can we do?” Then it’s four versus 21. It makes you a little uncomfortable.”
Negro Leagues President Bob Kendrick moderated a discussion on race in baseball with Josh Bell, Lorenzo Cain, Mychal Givens, Dwight Smith Jr., Taylor Hearn, and Delino DeShields Jr. Click here to view it. (I’ll also embed it at the bottom of the post.)
Jack Flaherty posted his thoughts on the ongoing police violence against black communities:
“The system continues to fail time and time again and nothing seems to change. Officers are not being held accountable for their actions. The badge and blue uniform are not a pedestal that puts a citizen of the United States of America above the law. The badge and blue uniform are there to distinguish those who are meant to PROTECT their communities, not terrorize and kill those that are meant to protect and serve. That being said, not all police officers are bad, but those who are not bad need to be speaking up about the injustices. Your voice needs to be heard. Your silence is speaking just as loud.“
If you’ve been out there protesting, stay safe. And if you haven’t, I hope you’ve done what you can, from reading, listening and supporting black voices to donating money.
Organizations that I’ve donated to include the Brooklyn Bail Fund, Black Lives Matter, and Black Visions Collective. But things have changed recently and there may be better places where your money can do more good at this moment. Here’s a piece from Vox that might help.
