Tom Hanks in Bridge of Spies (Steven Spielberg, 2015)
Cast: Tom Hanks, Mark Rylance, Alan Alda, Amy Ryan, Dominick Lombardozzi, Victor Verhaege, Scott Shepherd, Sebastian Koch, Austin Stowell, Will Rogers, Mark Fichera, Brian Hutchison, Joshua Harto, Henny Russell, Rebekah Brockman. Screenplay: Matt Charman, Ethan Coen, Joel Coen. Cinematography: Janusz Kaminski. Production design: Adam Stockhausen. Film editing: Michael Kahn. Music: Thomas Newman.
Steven Spielberg is unquestionably a great director, with a seldom-equaled skill at visual storytelling and at building tension and suspense. But he tries too hard to make a statement in Bridge of Spies -- something about defending the Constitution -- when it could have been simply an engaging film about Cold War tensions. It also suffers from the wrong kind of star power: Tom Hanks has devolved from a terrific actor, skilled at both comedy and drama, into the movies' iconic Good Guy. Casting him as the lawyer James Donovan, forced to defend a Soviet spy, deprives the film of any ambiguity about Donovan's defense of Rudolf Abel (Mark Rylance). Hanks's Donovan can simply wrap himself in the Constitution and we're with him all the way, even as public opinion of the time turns against him. As a film actor Hanks has lost his dark side, so we know that whoever he plays will triumph. Imagine Bridge of Spies with Donovan played by George Clooney or Bradley Cooper, stars with just a touch of shadow in their personae, and you can see what I mean. Fortunately, the film is otherwise well-cast, including Rylance's Oscar-winning turn as Abel, as well as Scott Shepherd's impatient CIA man and Sebastian Koch's duplicitous East German lawyer, and the screenplay by Matt Charman and Joel and Ethan Coen manages a good deal of suspense. (Sometimes at the expense of historical accuracy: Donovan was never shot at in his home, as the film has it.) The Coen brothers were brought in to work on the first draft of Charman's screenplay, specifically on the section in which Donovan finds himself negotiating separately with the Soviets and the East Germans to engineer an exchange of Abel for imprisoned U2 pilot Francis Gary Powers (Austin Stowell) and an American student, Frederic Pryor (Will Rogers), who has been accidentally arrested in East Berlin. It's the best part of the movie, as Donovan wrangles not only with the conflicting egos and bureaucracies of the Soviet and East German officials but also with the CIA's insistence that only Powers need be included in the deal. Unfortunately, Spielberg doesn't know when his movie is over. Bridge of Spies should end with the exchange of spies at the bridge, but Spielberg keeps it running as Donovan boards the plane for home, returns to the arms of his family just as the news of his successful negotiation is breaking, gives his wife (Amy Ryan) the jar of marmalade he promised to bring her from London, witnesses her realization that he wasn't in London after all, and soon afterward rides to work on the bus where a woman who had previously frowned at him as a traitor now smiles at him as a hero after seeing his picture in the newspaper. All the while, Thomas Newman's score is telling us what we're supposed to feel. It's  sentimental anticlimax, of the sort that many critics decry in what are usually regarded as among Spielberg's greatest films, Saving Private Ryan (1998) and Schindler's List (1993). Bridge of Spies would have been a lot better if Spielberg hadn't given in to his instinct for overemphasis.

FLP BOOK OF THE DAY: Insert Coin by Joshua Zelesnick
On SALE now! Pre-order Price Guarantee: https://www.finishinglinepress.com/product/insert-coin-by-joshua-zelesnick/
This title will be released on January 10, 2025
In Insert Coin the reckless project of #American #capitalism and #imperialism is felt through four characters—a contestant, a drone operator, a monster, and a prisoner—who interact in a world of game shows, chain-of-command killing, and confusion around the virtual and the real. Through video games, fantasy, and drone warfare by joystick, the book chronicles dissociation and denial as well as a soul longing for meaning in a world whose absurd violence and demand for profit feels simulated but is all too real. Insert Coin launches an experimental syntax with strict formal constraints, such as a 6-syllable line by 8-line stanza sequence to suggest the unbearable dimensions of a solitary confinement cell. In these #poems, a #civilization that can only imagine destruction asks, “how do I get to the next level?”
Joshua Zelesnick‘s poetry collection, Insert Coin (Finishing Line Press, 2025) was a finalist for the Marystina Santiestevan First Book Prize at Conduit Books and Ephemera and the Trio Award at Trio House Press. Cherub Poems, his chapbook, was published with Bonfire Books in 2019. His poetry and prose have appeared widely in magazines and journals including Diagram, The Texas Review, Jubilat, Juked, Labor Notes, and Counterpunch. He’s currently working on a poetry book titled Very Beautifully, Suddenly. He lives in Pittsburgh, PA with his loving partner and kids in a garden co-housing community. With friends, he helps host a living-room music and reading series.
PRAISE FOR Insert Coin by Joshua Zelesnick
Insert Coin is indelibly shaped by the atrocities committed by the United States during its interminable War on Terror while meditating on the structures that underlie that violence, including the cultural form of the video game. For all the seemingly disembodied virtuality of our digital lives, of the simulacral experience of what theorist McKenzie Wark calls gamespace—“I’m in a video / game and there’s no way out”—Joshua Zelesnick tirelessly attends to the material realities of what it means to be human in the infowhelm throughout this superb collection, to the bodies, feelings, affects, and images of those who have to navigate this space—which is also battlespace, dronespace. Page after page of Insert Coin confronts the fact that “constructing walls can’t defend us / from our tectonic heart,” and this collection’s remarkable, dense poems document some of the more difficult aspects of what it means to live on this late planet in this late year of late empire, this “strange electronic limbo, white / hot clarity of nightmare / in infrared, heat signatures / ghostly white against the cool black earth.” Zelesnick’s work also holds out poetry as an alternative to the eradicating quantification that defines so much of contemporary life, inviting us to hear and see and sing and feel some other space of play, a space against and beyond the violence of the digital, what we might call a poetryspace.
–Bradley J. Fest, author of 2013-2017: Sonnets (2024)
“Zelesnick’s language game places a jar not in Tennessee but to the wall(s): listens proper, listens the better to hear a prisoner’s voice; cracked shouts; grandmothers; children’s rhymes; tulips; a command, light em up; reported statistics then applause; some audience… These all come through and are formed in rough clay into this almost-story taking almost-place on a large empty plain, the figures and characters becoming, as we read, haunted and haunting. Insert Coin is a fabulous, furious book.”
–Kate Northrop, author of Homewrecker (2022)
I found a narrow form of six-syllable lines and eight-line stanzas to reflect the six-foot by eight -foot cell solitary confinement prisoners are forced to live in. So begins Joshua Zelesnick‘s meticulous, terse, fearsome book, Insert Coin. Extraordinary the way these poems unflinchingly confer their intelligence on suffering, burrowing deep into the dehumanized and dystopic: the prisoner in the embassy/the prisoner in solitary/the prisoner with sleep-deprived/ eyes still pale as a suffocating/fish…the prisoner as a meme. Zelesnick’s poems arise out of the crises of the era, and they provide that era with a relentless, formidable critic.
–Lynn Emanuel, author of Transcript of the Disappearance, Exact and Diminishing (2023)

AYRA STARR FT. SEYI VIBEZ - "BAD VIBES"
youtube
We mostly vibe with this...
[6.78]
Kayla Beardslee: One of the greatest casualties of TSJ pausing coverage in fall 2022 was us not being able to review Ayra Starr’s luminous breakout single "Rush" and give it the [10]s it deserves. Ayra is only 21, but her voice has a depth and wisdom beyond her years that imbues her music with a sense of warmth, purpose, and true star quality. "Bad Vibes" doesn’t match the lofty heights of "Rush," and I prefer "Commas" among the singles off her new album, but it's really an embarrassment of riches -- I’ve heard a lot of Ayra Starr songs, and not a single one of them has been bad. [7]
Julian Axelrod: Ayra Starr's new album The Year I Turned 21 features a stacked guest list typical of any buzzy artist's sophomore effort, from Asake to Giveon to Coco Jones. So it's telling that the teaser singles were solo highlight "Commas" and "Bad Vibes," a collaboration with fellow Afrobeats up-and-comer Seyi Vibez, who has a tenth of his host's monthly listeners on Spotify. This time, Ayra's betting on herself: her songwriting, her voice, and her eye for talent. The sidewinding chanted chorus gives the track enough heft to counterbalance its airy vibe. But the backing choir nearly overpowers Ayra's agile runs, and by the time you get through two spins of the hook and a totally fine Seyi verse, Ayra's bridge almost feels like a feature on her own song. It's also the highlight, mixing a weary flow with delightfully oblique turns of phrase ("If something's coming, I'll see it through my lashes") that prove she's shrewd enough to land a hit without relying on star power. But by the end of the song, I still don't fully understand Starr's power. [6]
Joshua Minsoo Kim: Somehow more of an Asake track than the one that actually features him, “Bad Vibes” is mostly interesting because of the group chants and melancholy strings. There’s not much underneath all this, which means I’m mostly stuck thinking about how everything that made Asake enthralling has been reduced to pure vibes here, which was also my impression of Seyi Vibez’s album last year.  [4]
Nortey Dowuona: Ayra's continued success does prompt me to say that the homie ran background vocals for her on tour, and you should ask for her to do so too. Would've been a better use of Seyi Vibez too, tbh. [8]
Ian Mathers: Both named performers do a fine job, but honestly the whole thing could have been the massed group vocals (yes, including doing the currently solo parts) and I'd be just as happy, if not happier. [7]
Jonathan Bradley: Ayra Starr brings an American flow to these Nigerian beats, sounding reminiscent of Future or Young Thug as she raps "I'm leading a life that can clean me from my past shit/Burn all this money and leave it in my ashes." It forms an oddly familiar anchor for a tune that floats otherwise off into a blissful transcendence. The choir massed on the hook resists those who might throw bad vibes; I can't imagine negativity having any chance of finding a foothold on a beat so liquid, so cleansing. [8]
Taylor Alatorre: I've always found the "good vibes only" type of song to be superfluous at best and nauseating at worst, not least because it points to a trend of younger generations speaking like the marketers who are paid well to capture them (see also phrases like "FOMO" and "life hack," thankfully neither of which is a pop trope). "Bad Vibes" guards against this tendency by aiming not to conjure positivity out of nothing, but rather to ward off the negative feelings and events that it knows are always skulking nearby. "I need my enemies deceased" sits a bit uneasily next to the multiple appeals for God's heavenly favor, but Ayra Starr says it with such lightness in her voice that it feels like she's requesting it as a favor to them. Nothing wrong with raising the stakes of an otherwise inconsequential party song to Old Testament levels. [7]
Katherine St. Asaph: Well, the title's half accurate. [7]
Jacob Sujin Kuppermann: Contrary-wise, the vibe here is quite good — especially in the interchange between the chanted, monolithic choir of the hook and the verses, where Ayra Starr and Seyi Vibez deftly trade boasts. They both sound so cool; obviously trying quite hard in the way of early twentysomethings since time immemorial, but here their effort enhances the performance rather than detract from it: by the end, I was fully bought into the experience. [7]

Flowers from Dumas Haddad on Vimeo.
FLOWERS is an afro-futuristic fairytale of love, following a ceremony of a mother giving away her son, adopting references to classic Disney stories from the 1930s-50s, modernising tropes for a coming of age tale.
Through poetic abstract storytelling, elevated throughout by lush cinematic tones and stylised production and costume design, the whimsical story follows a prince as he journeys from the confinement of his family home into the harsh reality of the outside world in search of his one true love, to the disappointment of his overlooked brothers.
In doing so the film reclaims the magic of that time we are all so familiar with: imagining what a black fairy-tale would look and feel like, by inverting and adapting age-old themes of fairy-tale lore.

Dancing On My Own - Joshua Bradley
Requested: Yes ~ Hi my bestest💗💗 Please can I request something based on Dancing On My Own by Robyn? Love u always Queen xx
Tumblr media
Saturday nights only meant one thing for you, going to the club to get absolutely wasted with your friends. The alcohol provided the excuse to get up and dance like idiots. It was finally your turn to go up and buy the shots. As you entered the queue, a bearded man stood next to you. It only took you a few seconds to register who it was. Joshua Bradley.
You had both dated for a few months when you were eighteen, before breaking it off. He always remained your standard for relationships, no matter how hard you tried though, you couldn’t find someone who could quite meet those standards. Things would go well and then a few months in, things would fall flat. Your friends would accuse you of having standards so high that most average men couldn’t reach them.
A few months after things had ended between you and Josh, he had gotten with another girl. You knew nothing about her, but she must be really special to have him captivated the way that he was. You had seen on your social media, just how pretty she was; you didn’t have the heart to remove Josh, as there wasn’t any bad blood between either of you. The relationship just didn’t work, partly because you were too young and partly because he was too focused on his career, YouTube had really taken off for him after putting in the grind for a few years. He was a better man now than when you knew him.
“Twelve cherry sours please.” You said, as you ordered the round for your friends table. As you did, Josh turned to look at you for the first time. Despite it being only a couple of years, he looked so much older now. More mature. The success he had achieved, was etched on his face in every laughter line, the grey in his hair an indicator of the stress that he had put on himself to make sure he gave his all.
He gave you a small smile before sauntering off into the crowd, beer in hand. You followed him with your eyes, desperate to see if he was still with that girl. He hadn’t posted anything about her in a while. Your doubts were reassured when he slung his arm around the smaller blonde, the one you had seen in many Instagram posts where he had gushed over her. He let her take a sip of his beer, the froth formed a little moustache on her upper lip. When he noticed, he tilted her head up and kissed it off of her. The love between them tangible even if you were only watching from afar.
The barman shoved the tray in front of you, coughing to snap your attention away from Josh and the girl that he was with. You carefully picked the tray up and made your way back to your friends. You placed the tray on the table, everyone eagerly taking a shot, their gaze now turned to you as you dithered about whether you actually wanted the shot or not. After all, coincidences like this don’t happen often.
Nevertheless, you downed the shot. The burning liquor provided you with the confidence to hit the dance floor. The many attempts to get one of your friends up with you, were in vain. So, you just had to dance on your own. The music being loud enough to drown out the memory of Josh, as well as any thought of him with another woman. You hadn’t anticipated how much seeing him again would open wounds that you thought had healed years ago. Even though the breakup was amicable, it was clear that you loved him a lot more than he loved you. Regardless of the many times he had attempted to reassure you that, that wasn’t true -- it was painfully obvious now that it was.
You made the quick decision that seeing him only validated one thing. It was time to say goodbye, to him and to the standards that you had surrounding relationships because of him. He had moved on completely, you were sure that his standards were by no means influenced by you -- someone he had dated for a few months four years ago, when you were both teenagers. As you made that promise with yourself, Dancing On My Own by Robyn blasted through the club speakers. An affirmation that you needed as you took one final glance at the man you once adored.
Losing yourself in the music was the best thing that could have happened to you. As two hands were placed around your waist, as the person moved to the beat with you. The timing was perfect. Down to the second, you didn’t believe in miracles being granted by the universe. But perhaps this was your chance to move on from everything.
“Hi darling, can I buy you a drink?” The voice asked. You turned your head to take a quick glance at him. He was alright looking and had a decent sense of style.
“That would be great, thanks.”
The lights go down, the music dies.
The light that you had put on Josh, had faded. In reality, he probably was an amazing guy but you had placed him on a pedestal that was purposefully so hard to reach because it hurt you having to let go. But little baby steps would ensure that getting over him didn’t have to be such a laborious task. Even if it all started with someone buying you a drink.

Josh Lyman x Reader
Words: 2184
Summary: Two colleagues that usually butt heads are forced to play nice when the President sends them to attend to a Governor's Ball in his home state.
Notes: I have so much Josh angst I wanted to write something a little fluffier that I could still capture his signature snark in. (For the purposes of this, I made up a Governor that would fit the story so if there was one discussed in the show, they aren’t in this one.) I also wrote this in two days so… bare with me.
-
If you hadn’t been in the presence of the President, you might have thrown something at him.
“If the President addresses this now, the Republicans will stop at nothing to get back at him for it.” He spoke in that smug, know-it-all tone that drove you insane.
“This is about real people, Mr. Lyman, not the little politics games that you play all day.”
“Okay, everyone, I think that’s enough.” The President’s order may have halted your argument, but you could still feel the heat rising to your cheeks as you stared Josh down. The rest of the team made a very quick exit, hoping to avoid becoming casualties in you and Josh’s on-going battle. But when the two of you started for the door, President Bartlet’s voice called you back. “Not. You. Two.”
You grimaced and turned back around, reveling a little in the fact that Josh looked just as uncomfortable as you did. One stern look from Jed Bartlet, however, was enough to diminish that.
“Is it physically impossible for the two of you to let me get through one meeting without going at each other’s throats?” He urged, his irritated gaze switching rapidly between the both of you. “Not only are you both a part of this team, you are adults for Christ sake!”
“Sorry, sir.” You gulped.
“My apologies, Mr. President.”
God, even apologizing, he had to try and sound smarter than you.
“I’m not finished yet.” The President walked around his desk and grabbed an envelope from under a pile of other papers. “The Governor of New Hampshire is hosting a ball on Saturday to celebrate something that I can’t even remember. Frankly, I think it’s because his wife enjoys parties a little too much, but who am I to judge?”
You and Josh exchanged a look that consisted more of confusion than anger.
Bartlet continued, “Well, seeing as I used to be Governor of my home state, he’s been kind enough to invite me, though I also think this is more of a way to get more Democratic backing for his next election. Nevertheless, while I am unable to attend due to this whole mess with possible terrorism, I know just the two members of my senior staff to send in my place.” He looked pointedly at both of you.
The excuses tumbled over each other as you and Josh blurted them out, desperately pleading to find something that would change his mind. You hated political gatherings in general but the idea of being forced to go with Josh? It twisted your stomach into so many knots you thought you’d throw up.
“There’s going to be political fallout from all of this and I should really be around-”
“C.J. and Toby are going to need me to-”
“Y/N could go by herself.” Josh said suddenly, making your jaw drop. That little snake. “I’m sure there are plenty of young men that’ll be thrilled to see you.”
“Says one of the White House’s most eligible bachelors.” You fired back, forgetting who you were standing in front of.
“Enough!” The President slammed the invitation down on the desk in front of the two of you. “This isn’t about who is more desirable than who. This is about you two learning how to work as a team and not biting each other’s heads off every time you’re in the same room together! Now, I am calling Governor Thompson and telling him you’re going and the two of you are going to be the picture of grace and maturity. If I hear one word of anything else, so help me god, your careers will be so buried, it’ll take years before they see the light of day.” His voice echoed through the Oval Office, rattling you down to the bone. “Do I make myself clear?”
“Yes, Mr. President.”
“Yes, Mr. President.”
“Good. Now go do whatever you need to to free up next Saturday.” He sat down, putting on his glasses to look over other documents. “Oh, and find something nice to wear. Mrs. Thompson has always been a bit of a stickler with the dress code.”
With that, you were dismissed and you felt the dread settling in your chest. You were going to a ball. In New Hampshire. With Josh Lyman for a date. As you shouldered out the door together, you cast glowering looks.
“I hate you.”
“I hate you more.”
-
If the snickers from Sam and C.J. weren’t enough to drive you crazy in the week leading up to your flight, scrambling to find a dress was not something you originally had on your schedule. Even when you had found one you liked, there was the matter of rescheduling everything you had the weekend you would be gone.
At least Josh seemed to be having as difficult a time as you were. Any time you saw him in passing, he looked frantic and disheveled- which would usually bring you a small amount of joy, but for some reason, knowing you were in the same boat actually made you feel better about going with him.
“Hey.”
You looked up from the piles of work from your desk, surprised to see your unfortunate date standing in your doorway. It was the day before you were set to leave and you both had mountains of work to try and finish.
“What can I help you with, Josh?”
“I just came to say that this might not be such a bad idea.” He moved from the door to the chair, but he didn’t sit down. He just stood anxiously behind it, leaning on the back. He actually looked sincere- and a voice in the back of your head pointed out that, without his usual cloud of arrogance that always hung around him, he was actually very attractive.
No. Definitely not. You hated him.
“Which part? Going to a ridiculous dance so that Governor Thompson can get more clout with Democrats or the fact that we have to go as a bonding exercise?” Your tone was cold, even more so than usual. Call it overcorrecting for your brain’s traitorous thoughts.
“I think the President is right.” Josh’s posture changed, standing up a little straighter as his tone grew defensive. “If this is what it takes to get us to work together, then I guess we deserve it.”
“Funny, since when he first proposed the idea you suggested that I go alone.” You stood up, crossing your arms.
Josh mimicked your stance, his brow furrowing with anger. “Look, I came in here to make some kind of peace with you, and I don’t understand-”
“I know what you came here to do, Josh. You want to show me that I don’t understand Bartlet the way you do while you play some kind of martyr for going on this trip.” You leaned forward with your hands on your desk and he did the same. Your faces must have only been a few inches apart.
“Fine!”
“Fine!”
You’d never wanted to kiss Josh Lyman more than you did in that moment and couldn’t hate him more for it.
-
Your seats on the plane were right next to each other. Because of course, they were. Josh got the window seat despite your protests, sticking you in the middle between him and a rather obnoxious businessman who was speaking loudly on his phone.
“Sir, I need you to turn that off as we prepare to take off.” The flight attendant instructed.
“Yeah, just give me a second.”
“Now, sir.” Her voice was a semi-irritated monotone that left little room for any argument. The man gave her an annoyed look and ended his call. “Thank you, sir.” She continued down the aisle to berate somebody else. Without the distraction of work, he sought out a new way to pass the time- you.
“What takes you to Concord?” He leaned a little closer to you than you would have preferred, but leaning back would basically put you in Josh’s lap so you stayed put.
“My coworker and I have an event to attend.” You motioned to the seemingly oblivious man on the other side of you.
“Just coworker?” His casual expression turned into a suggestive smirk and you felt his fingers run up your knee. You jerked away from him.
“Husband, actually, so how about you keep your hands to yourself?” Josh snapped suddenly, giving Mr. Handsy a death glare. You stared at Josh with wide eyes and forced your mouth shut to keep it from gaping in shock. The man beside you must have been as surprised as you because words came out as a whispered stutter.
“Sorry, I didn’t- she said- and I thought-”
“Yeah, well you thought wrong.” He stood up. “Here, honey, why don’t you take the window seat?”
You sat there, without moving, for a few seconds before he nudged your leg with his foot and you climbed over him to get to the seat by the window. Once you were both situated, the other man got suddenly very interested in the papers from his briefcase.
You leaned over and whispered in Josh’s ear. “Honey? Really?”
“Don’t start.” Though his voice sounded irritated, there was almost a small smile playing at his lips. You shifted awkwardly, trying to keep a smirk from your own lips.
“You really didn’t have to do that.”
“Do you want the window seat or not?” Now his smile had grown into a snicker, making you laugh lightly.
“Who would have thought you were such a gentleman?”
“Well, I’m a married man now, apparently.” He teased. You rolled your eyes.
“In your dreams, Lyman.”
-
After an hour of shaking hands and dancing with the Governor’s persistent son, you were ready to knock your head against the wall until you passed out. Oddly enough, you had yet to see Josh. Mrs. Thompson invited you to come early for tea so you hadn’t arrived together. You were beginning to think he’d bailed when you saw him across the room.
Pushing your way over to him, his eyes widened when he finally saw you.
“You look amazing.” He gasped, his eyes scanning your silky blue dress before settling on your eyes. “I mean… wow.”
You felt blush tint your cheeks as a smile spread across your lips. He cleaned up pretty well himself and you found yourself checking him out for what you wished you could say was the first time ever. What could you say? The man looked good in suits.
You must have stood there, staring at each other, for a few minutes before Ned Thompson came into view. Without a second to think, you grabbed Josh’s hand.
“Dance with me.”
“What?”
“Just do it.” You yanked him with you onto the dance floor, losing sight of the Governor’s persistent son.
Josh looked around, trying to see who you seemed so desperate to avoid as the two of you began to sway to the music. “What was that about?”
You checked one more time to make sure the coast was clear. “Ned.”
“The Governor’s kid?”
“Yes.”
“Isn’t he, like, ten years younger than you.”
“He’s only eight, but yes.” You rolled your eyes, annoyed by his pestering. On the bright side, he was a pretty good dancer. “If I dance with him one more time, I think he’ll propose.” You couldn’t help but laugh at the ridiculousness of the situation.
“Just tell him you’re married to me.” Josh smirked. “Worked the last time.” You both chuckled and continued dancing. For a while, you forgot why you were here to begin with. You were enjoying yourself more than you cared to admit. In a room full of people, the only one you wanted to dance with was the man you loved to hate.
Maybe it was the other way around.
-
You sat up in bed, sipping coffee and reading the paper while the sound of the hotel’s heater droned on. The fluffy white robe enveloped your body perfectly, but the real warmth came from the sleeping form beside you as he turned over, swinging his arm so it was around your waist and pulling you closer to him. You smiled in both amusement and complete bewilderment as to how you got here.
“I don’t think this is what the President meant by ‘teamwork’.” You noted, folding up the paper and setting it aside.
Josh peeked up at you, half his face still smooshed against the pillow.
“Goodmorning.” He greeted groggily, rubbing his eyes as he slowly sat up.
“I made you coffee.” You handed him the little Styrofoam cup and waited until he’d had enough to wake up a little more. “What are we supposed to tell him when he asks how everything went?”
He thought for a moment. “You know, we didn’t fight at all last night.” He was right. Between the ball and, well, everything after that, not a single argument was had.
You shrugged and held out your cup of coffee for a cheers. “To teamwork,” Josh smirked and tapped his cup against yours.
“To teamwork.”

One Direction Theme Prompts Part One
Tumblr media
In honor of 10 years of fucking One Direction, I have decided to do a One Direction themed prompt song list. I picked a few of my favorite lyrics and songs from them for you guys to pick out! I’m so excited to be back in the writing game and completely and utterly thrilled to have all my fanfics new chapters in the works and ready to be posted within the next week!
One Direction Theme Prompts:
“I have loved you since we were 18.”
“My. hands, you hands. Tied up like two ships.”
“A big house party with a crowed kitchen..”
“If I’m louder would you see me?”
“Nothing can come between you and I.”
“If this room was burning I wouldn’t even notice. Cause you’ve been taken up my mind with your little white lies.”
“Written in these walls are the stories that I can’t explain.”
“I don't care what people say when we’re together.”
“You hand fits in mine, like it’s made just for me.”
“We danced all night to the best song ever.”
“Although I am broken, my heart is untamed.”
“I’m like a boat on the water, you’re the rise on the waves that calm my mind.”
“So get out, get out, get out of my head and fall into my arms instead.”
“Tonight let’s get some and live while we’re young.”
“And let me kiss you.”
“Same old shh but a different day.”
“Not even the Gods above can separate the two of us.”
“I will carry you over fire and water for your love.”
“Spaces between us hold all our secrets.”
“Does it ever drive you crazy just how fast the night changes?”
“My heart heart, you heart sit tight like bookends.”
“I don't care I’m not scared of love..”
“Let me be the one to light a fire inside those eyes.”
“All I can do is say that these arms are made for holding you.”
“all the rest of my crimes don’t come close to the look on your face when I let you go.”
“They don't know about the things we do, they don't know about the I love you’s. But I bet if they only knew, they would just be jealous of us.”
“Under the lights tonight, you turned around, and you stole my heart with just one look. When I saw you face, I fell in love.”
“I love this feeling right now, I wish you were here with me, cause right now, everything is new to me.”
“If you’re pretending from the start like this, with. a tight grip than my kiss, can mend your broken heart.”
“I want you here with me, like how I picture it. So I don't have to keep imagining.”
“I’ve never been so into somebody before, and every time we both touch I only want more.”
“You know I want to be the one to hold you when you sleep.”
“I wanna be first yeah, wanna be the first to take it all the way like this..”
“So your friend’s been telling me you’ve been sleeping with my sweater and that you can’t stop missing me..”
“ I know you’ve never loved the crinkles by. your eyes when you smile.”
“And being here without you is like I’m waking up to only half a blue sky.”
“I’m half a heart without you.”
“You still have to squeeze into your jeans, but you’re perfect to me.”

Let’s Do This » Josh Bradley
Request: You get knocked up by one of the sidemen boys and he wants to keep it.
WARNING — MENTIONS OF ABORTION
You stared down at the pregnancy test in your hand in shock — never did you believe that you would be pregnant at 22 nor by your best friend’s mate either. A million thoughts were running through your head; were you going to keep it? Were you going to tell Simon? Were you going to tell Josh?
“Y/N!” Your best friend of sixteen years called from outside the door pulling you out of your thoughts.
“Two seconds Si!” You yelled as you quickly wrapped the test in toilet roll and tossed it in the bin. You left the bathroom, coming face to face with Simon. “What’s up?”
“I’m hungry.” He pouted.
“Seriously?” You huffed rolling your eyes and stalked downstairs.
“What’s up with you?” He frowned.
“Nothing.” You told him. “What do you want to eat?”
“Bacon, eggs and beans?” He asked with a grin on his face.
“Grab me the stuff.” You instructed. He grabbed out the bacon and eggs, which you started cooking whilst Simon microwaved the beans. You began to feel slightly nauseous, the smell of the bacon made you stomach turn. You felt the urge to throw up and sprinted for the bathroom, Simon following behind not before turning the hob off. You threw up in the toilet and felt him holding your hair out of the way and rubbing your back. You groaned and collapsed in a heap beside the toilet, grasping your stomach.
“Are you okay, Y/N/N?” Simon questioned in concern. You looked at him with tears welling in your eyes. “Hey, hey. What’s wrong? Why are you upset?”
You clutched onto him, sobbing into his chest with your arms wrapped around his neck.
“I fucked up Si.” You cried.
“Let’s go to my room and talk. The bathroom doesn’t seem to be the best place to do this.” He informed you. He lifted you up and carried you to his room, resting you on his bed and shutting the door to allow the two of you some privacy. He sat next to you and wrapped his arms around you. “What happened?”
“You remember that night we all went clubbing?” You asked quietly. Simon nodded. “Well I slept with Josh. I’m pregnant, Si.”
“Oh Y/N.” He sighed. “What do you want to do? Have you told him?”
“You’re the first person I told. I have no idea but I’m terrified. I can’t do this right now. I’m not ready to raise a child.” You sobbed.
“You’ve got to think about your options. Whatever you decide you know that I’m going to be there for you. This is your decision.” He told you. There was silence between the two of you for several minutes as thoughts plagued your mind.
“I don’t think… I don’t think I can do this Simon.” You sniffled.
“You can, you’re stronger than you know.” He smiled weakly.
“That’s not what I meant.” You spoke quietly making him frown. “I don’t think I can go through with this pregnancy.”
“This is your decision.” He began. “If that’s your choice then I’ll be there.”
“Thank you.” You cried.
Today was the day. You were going with Simon to the clinic and you were incredibly nervous. You pulled on your shoes as you waited for Simon to finish getting dressed when you heard Josh call you.
“Y/N?” He yelled coming down from his room as Simon exited his.
“Josh?” You frowned. You hadn’t spoken to him at all since you found out and you weren’t planning on telling him either.
“Can we talk?” He asked softly.
“Uhh, now’s really not a good time.” You told him as Simon silently pulled his own shoes on.
“This is important.” He replied beginning to get agitated.
“I’ve got somewhere I need to be.” You informed him opening the door.
“When were you planning on telling me?” He called. You froze. How would he know? Simon wouldn’t say anything.
“What are you talking about?” You questioned.
“You know what I’m on about Y/N! Stop acting like you don’t know!” He yelled. “You’re pregnant.”
“And what’s it to you?” You span around to face him with your arms crossed. Simon watched the two of you anxiously, ready to step in to defend you.
“What? Other than the fact it’s my child?” He asked in disbelief.
“I don’t have time for this.” You muttered. “Simon we need to go.”
“What’s so important that you can’t talk to me about our baby?” There was silence.
“Y/N?” Simon mumbled under his breath.
“There’s nothing to talk about.” You whispered. Josh stared at you, his eyes widening and shook his head.
“No.” He spoke softly. “No! You aren’t going to kill my child!”
“Our child.” You corrected agitatedly. “This is my body Josh. You don’t decide what I do with it. I do.”
“You weren’t even going to tell me were you?!” He yelled. “I’m not going to let you do this!”
“You don’t have a say in this!” You replied.
“Stop it! The both of you!” Simon interrupted. He turned to face you. “I’ll ring the doctors, I’ll cancel the appointment for now.”
“What do you mean for now?” Josh growled. “How could you let her do this without telling me?!”
“No offence mate.” He hissed. “Y/N is my best friend. She didn’t want me to tell you nor did she want to. I’ve got to respect that. This is her body. You can’t force her to go through with this pregnancy if she doesn’t want to.”
“What? So she just gets to take my child away from me and I’ve got no say in it?” He cried out in anger.
“Just leave it. Let me talk to Y/N.” He told him softly. Josh looked between the two of you; he looked like he wanted to say something but instead he sighed and stalked off.
“Y/N?” Your best friend called quietly. The tears had been falling freely down your face now and your legs felt like jelly. You walked forward and collapsed into his chest in a heap of sobs. The two of you made your way up to his room and once again found yourself cuddled up into his chest.
“I don’t know what to do anymore.” You sobbed.
“Maybe you should rethink your decision.” He began. “If you do keep this baby, you’re not gonna be on your own. You’ll have me and mum, dad, Nick and Johnny. I think it’s evident as well that Josh wants to be apart of their life. And if after all things considered you still don’t want to go through with this pregnancy, Josh is going to have to accept that.”
“If I do this, if I have an abortion, Josh will never forgive me. I don’t think I could lose him.” You bawled. “But if I keep the baby, will they’re life be messed up? Mum and dad weren’t together when I grew up and it was so hard. I don’t want my baby to grow up like that.”
“I think that’s something you need to discuss with Josh.” He told you. “A best friend can only fill in for so much.”
“You’re right. Thank you Simon.” You sighed wiping your eyes and engulfing him in a hug. You exited the room and found yourself outside Josh’s. With a deep breath you nervously knocked the door, hearing a faint ‘come in’. You opened the door slowly and were met with the father of your child sat facing away from you staring at the wall. “Josh?”
“If you’ve come here to tell me you’re having an abortion, you can just go.” He spoke harshly.
“We need to talk.” You said ignoring his last comment and sitting down next to him. “Properly.”
“What’s there to talk about?” He muttered.
“I was wrong to not tell you about the baby.” You began. “And it was horrible of me to try and have an abortion without speaking to you.”
“Yeah it was.” He said bluntly.
“I’m terrified.” You started placing your hand on his. “I didn’t know what to do and I made a decision without thinking about it. I was scared about your reaction and I was scared about everyone else’s. I’m 22 Josh. I’m too young to have the responsibility of a child.”
“Says who? There’s no age on parenthood.” He told you.
“I guess you’re right.” You mumbled. “If I keep this baby…”
“You’re considering it?” His head snapped up to look at you.
“I don’t want this baby to grow up like I did. My parents split up when I was young and it was hard having to go from home to home, having them hate each other and having to deal with the fact that they were going to see other people.” You informed him.
“I-I didn’t know.” He stuttered.
“I don’t want to have this abortion and have you hate me. I wouldn’t be able to live with myself. I care about you too much.” You whispered.
“I care about you too.” He smiled weakly. “Which is why I want you to keep this baby. I want us to be a family and maybe me and you could…”
“Could?” You urged him to continue.
“I don’t know, it’s stupid.” He muttered under his breath. You grasped the back of his neck and pulled him in to kiss you. He immediately reciprocated the kiss and snaked his arms around your waist. “Let’s do this. Together.”

Let You Go - B. Simpson
Summary: you and Brad have a hard time in your relationship, and after a long talk u decides to break up, just for your and his mental health. This happened like two month ago, but accidentally you hear on the radio Brad a new song “Let You Go” and the whole conversation comes back to you in one second.
Based on: “Let You Go” by Joshua Bassett for HSMTS
Warning: english isn’t my first language, so I'm sorry for any mistakes. sad stuff, mension of bad mental health and break up stuff.
Words: 1126
a/n: Hi, so this is my first imagine I think? I hope that you’ll like it and if you want more, let me know! Let's go and I'm sorry for any mistake again!
»»————- ♡ ————-««
“And now, The vamps with their new song!” It was the first thing you heard when you turned on the radio in the car. You were scared at some point, because it was the first time after a break up, where you would hear Bradley's voice and to be honest, it was your favorite thing, when you were sad. You started the car and after a few seconds you were already on the way to your home.
“Close the book before it turns to tragedy Tear the treehouse down, give up the fantasy
It was hard for you, not to start crying in the middle of the road. Those lyrics hit you instantly and give you a hard flashback to this weird but special night. For you, all of it was like yesterday, and you can still feel those hot tears on your cheek. And still feel them on your fingers, after wiping them off from Bradley's face.
“Are you busy?” After a quiet knocking on the wooden door to his home studio, you slowly came in with a soft smile. All he do, was play on guitar some simple melodies.
“Not really” He smiled back, and put his guitar on the side, and completely turned to you. “something happened babe?”
“um” you started, and slowly came closer to him, to finally sit on his thighs and slightly hug him. “i don't even know how to start this conversation, but…” u mumbled into his neck and exhaled loudly.
It was hard for you, that was clear. From the last two month You don't feel too good, around Brad as his girlfriend or even as a friend. You don’t talk much, only when you have to. Most of the time you spend time on the couch, and he in his studio or bedroom. Even when you go to sleep, the only thing you do is say “good night”.
Let’s be honest, you're not that couple, who was called “true love” by fans and friends. Not anymore.
“Y/n you scare me, what's in your mind?” he asked after some quiet minutes. You could feel his hand in your hair. The best feeling in the world.
Maybe we still have some chance to fix it?
“Babe?” he asked again but this time you picked your head up, and looked into his chocolate eyes.
“What happened to us?” you simply asked, trying not to let any tears touch your skin. He hold breath. He knew what you were talking about. Immediately you saw tears in his eyes, which made you finally feel wet cheeks.
“I’m so sorry…” this time he hid his face while whispering those words
“Nothin' to regret since the day we met Glad we took a chance makin' our own world Perfectly imperfect like it had to be”
“Please don’t say that” You hugged him, let your tears wet his hair and your skin. “Don’t say that” you replayed sinking fingers in his hair.
After that you had a long talk about your feelings, thoughts and resolutions. You said your, Brad said his. But you know that in this situation, you don't have any chance to fix this. And he knows this too.
“So…” he started, when you stopped wiping his tears from his face. You both don’t know why, but with this motion you started giggling through the tears. “Who start this last confession?”
“not me, you know that i don’t know how to do things like that” you smile and this time, he wipes these hot tears from your skin.
“Well… yea, I know”
“I love you so much that I've gotta let you go It couldn't last forever And I hope you find better I can't forget us, can't pretend we ain't broken It was good together Now I've gotta let you go”
“Before I start, you have to know that I love.. i love you so fuckin’ much” you could feel how gently he took your hair by your ear. With that, you already know that he doesn't know what to really say in this situation, but at the same time, no matter what, you know that you’ll cry again. “and because of that, I have to let you go. I have to start working on myself and my mind again, to not destroy another future girl just like you. You deserve better Y/n, and I can't watch how you lose your light because of me.”
With that, you felt tears rolling on your skin once again, because you had the right.
“You have to find yourself back, and when this happens, just give me a sign, okay? We can't get back together, but at least we can still be friends, right?” he adds, wiping tears from you.
“Right” you replied, giving him a slight smile.
“I'll always be in love with who we used to be I'll save the photographs and keep the memories”
“That's crazy, you know?” It was the middle of the night. Your last night in a shared room and bed. The last night hug and last kiss before closing eyes.
“What actually?” he asked, looking at you and again he took your hair by your ear.
“I always thought that there was no way to break up with someone in complete peace. My last relationship ended with a really hard fight… u remember this anyway.” you giggled and looked at the window and stars in the sky. “And now, we lay in our bed, hugging each other, after our long talk… with that i don’t feel like we even break up here”
“oh so you wanna fight then?” he laughed as you too
“no, i don’t wanna” you rolled your eyes “it is fine as it is now”
“I know” he said proudly, but after that he looked into your eyes and took a deep breath. “Can I kiss you? You know, this last time before we go to sleep?”
Without any special words, you picked yourself up a little and put your hand on his cheek and kiss his lips. to be honest, it was your best last kiss for the rest of your life. After a few seconds you pulled away, because you feld another tears on your face. But u don’t really know who it was. Your… or Brad. You took a deep breath and smiled a little.
“Goodnight Brad”
“Goodnight Y/n”
“Who thought that one first kiss Would turn into two heartbreaks?”
»»-—————-««
“This was The vamps, and after a little break you’ll hear “Out of love” by beautiful and amazing Y/n! For little reminder, Y/n released this song two weeks ago, and now she breaks all records established by Olivia Rodrigo and her “driving license”! Stay with us!”

Lin-Manuel Miranda’s ‘Tick, Tick… Boom!’ Adds Joshua Henry, Judith Light, Bradley Whitford
Tumblr media
A trio of stars has been added to the cast of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Netflix film “Tick, Tick… Boom!”
Broadway vet Joshua Henry, Judith Light, and Emmy winner Bradley Whitford are all on board for the 1990-set movie musical. They join the previously-announced Andrew Garfield, Alexandra Shipp, Tony nominee Robin de Jesus and Vanessa Hudgens.
Henry, a three-time Tony nominee best known for his role in the 2010 musical “The Scottsboro Boys” and the Apple drama “See,” has booked the role of Roger. Light will play Rosa Stevens, and Whitford has landed the part of Stephen Sondheim — presumably the real-life Broadway kingpin in this tale of an aspiring theater composer.
“Tick, Tick… Boom!” marks Miranda’s feature directorial debut. Steven Levenson (“Dear Evan Hansen”) is adapting the screenplay based on the original stage show from late “Rent” creator Jonathan Larson. Miranda is also producing, along with Brian Grazer, Ron Howard and Julie Oh of Imagine Entertainment.
Larson’s sister Julie, Levenson and Celia Costas serve as executive producers. Ryan Heffington (Sia’s “Chandelier”) is choreographer.
