"C'mon . . . Baby needs a 16 or better to hit!" RPGs teeter on a balance between narrative and mechanics. (Jennell Jaquays, Dungeoneer 10, Judges Guild, March/April 1979)

Are you brave enough to face the Minotaur King? This week on the Vintage RPG Podcast, we’re checking out Caverns of Thracia (1979)! Considered by some to be the late Jennell Jaquays’ finest work, we talk about some of the ways it differs from her previous Judges Guild module, Dark Tower, the cool way it handles random encounters and its place in the high trinity of ’70s adventure design. Fun Fact: while folks, particularly in the OSR, think Caverns is top, Jennell considered neither that nor Dark Tower as the best examples of her work — and there are plenty of other gems in that bibliography.

I really like the weird little facial expressions the companions make during dialogue phases, but come on:

explorers of the spirit getting popular is kind of annoying me because there's just gonna be tons of people who never got over their petty childhood hatred of chatot feeling validated over blaming him for the guild rules when he's not the one who came up with those rules in the first place

finished the war eternal questline, and the fake-out Aurene death had me punching the air when the commander and what's her dick the crystal sylvari pulled out that last crystal from her "body"

For every Dark Tower that Judges Guild published, they put out like 25 books of dubious quality. Seriously — the full JG product listing is eye-wateringly long for a company that was in business for five or so years. There are eBay sellers out there who must have palettes full of the crappy new-old-stock, still wrapped in the crummy JG plastic wrap. I know, I’ve bought some of them.
House on Hangman’s Hill (1981) is trash. It isn’t priced like trash because that cover is so good, even if it is a clear trace of a still from the Hammer film Curse of the Werewolf (1961, and Oliver Reed’s first starring role, though itself not among the greatest of Hammer’s output). It features a smallish haunted mansion in the funhouse style, haunted primarily by one ghost that needs to be laid to rest. A forerunner to Ravenloft? Not likely. You can feel the minimal effort that was put in on almost every page, though, again, there are some nice illustrations. I like that wizard’s skull room. Nice to see someone taking Danzig to heart.

🌻 Sunny Reading Tag 🌻
Thank you for the tag @yourneighborhoodbibliophile

🔥 favourite book
Since I always say Le Pacte des Marchombre, I'm gonna change it up a bit and say: The Black Magician Trilogy. I need to read them again, it's been ages but they had a bit impact on me.
🌾 tropes that make you go "asfgrthgj"
I like the "opposite attract" trope but I might be biased because of my favorite ship (though I like it outside of romance too). And I like it when a villain goes good and vice versa.
🍂 comfort book
The Lightning Thief, I think. It's a quick read and I just love Percy so much, the beginning of his journey just warms my heart.
⚡ death in a book you would take back
I don't know if I actually would because all the deaths I remember served a very specific purpose in the story... Except for that death at the end of Crooked Kingdom. That one was just unnecessary. But if we're talking feelings, there are some deaths in Le Pacte des Marchombres that hit me hard every time.
🥠 book you wish you could read again for the first time
Iron Widow, just for the rush of absolute glee I felt seeing Zetian's rage and general unhinged-ness. A friend is reading it and sending me her reactions live and it's the best, I'm almost jealous of her for reading it for the first time...

oh shiiiiiit an old-fashioned tag game

last song: Houston from We Love Katamari
favorite color: I'm not sure how obvious this is online, but it's extremely obvious to people who meet me in person. It's purple, it will always be purple.
sweet/spicy/savory: por que no los tres? (that being said, my spice tolerance is on the lower end soooo lean more on the sweet and savory)
last movie/show/game: just rewatched the first five episodes of .hack//Roots with a buddy the other day, it's interesting going back to a show I really loved but haven't seen in probably a decade??? it's like having a whole different perspective of the characters and what's happening to them, like wow Haseo gets bullied so much in the first few episodes but somehow still wants to be around Ovan and join the Twilight Brigade? lol okay
last movie I could not be fucked to remember
last game was Splatoon 3, and also .hack//G.U. to take some screenshots
last google search: "is oyster sauce the same as fish sauce"
current obsession: I'm DEEP in the .hack abyss right now, y'all. My Shino feelings from back in the day have been revived like a gotdamn phoenix from the ashes. There was a part in episode 5 of Roots where she clearly wants help from Ovan in talking to the other members of the Twilight Brigade guild but he kind of hand waves it off and says "that's your job" and she's like "I know, but... :(" MY GIRL....
i literally have three tabs open right now of .hack merch that I'm questioning if I wanna buy it or not, as if i don't already have three boxes of .hack collectibles purchased over the course of the last year that have yet to be sorted/displayed/put away :^)
anyway...
