Artist Eric Goldberg’s tribute to voice actress June Foray, best known as the voice of Rocky the Flying Squirrel, among others.
June Foray was one of the more surprising names to be found on Richard Nixon’s Enemies List. For those unaware, Richard Nixon had a list of political opponents that were targeted for reprisals, a memo revealed during the Watergate investigation. June Foray’s surprising presence there is because she led a boycott against a meat importation tax Nixon was pushing. According to June Foray, her taxes were audited by the IRS every year for 10 years after the boycott.
A powerful sorceress and alchemist, Magica De Spell has pledged herself to steal Scrooge McDuck's cherished ‘number one dime’ and melt it in the fires of the volcano, so she can turn it into a powerful magical amulet capable of granting the Midas Touch. Her various efforts to obtain this dime has put her at odds not only with McDuck, but also his nephews, Huey, Dewey, and Louie Duck (as well as his niece, Della Duck). Even with her various powers and the frequent assistance of the dastardly Beagle Boys, Magica has never been able to get her hands on this precious dime.
In the more recent retelling of the Ducktails story, Magica has had a torrid history with Clan McDuck. In a climatic battle, Scrooge was able to trap Magica’s essence within his number one dime. Appearing as a shadowy figure, Magica has since reached out from the netherworld in recurrent efforts to obtain the dime and thus free her corporal form.
Actress June Foray voices the villainess in the earlier Ducktails animated series (with Catherine Tate voicing the character in the more current iteration). Magica De Spell first appeared in the sixth episode of the first Ducktails series, airing on September 21st, 1987.
