Here’s how the Bad Kids should have solved the problem:
From 5:05-5:30 only the first train is traveling at 60 mph. That’s 25 minutes at 60 miles per hour, a.k.a. 1 mile per minute, which means 25 miles traveled.
We can then reduce the distance left to travel by 25 miles, giving us 135-25=110 miles left to travel.
Now both trains are moving toward each other, so the rate at which the distance decreases (or the speed of one train relative to the other if you prefer) is 60+70=130 mph.
Now we need to know how long to travel 110 miles at 130 miles per hour, so we divide 110/130 and get 0.846153… hours.
Multiply that by 60 to get 50.76923076923076 minutes. Subtract off the 50 full minutes and multiply by 60 again to get 46.153846… seconds.
50 minutes added onto the start time of 5:30 gives us 6:20, and if we add on the seconds and round to the nearest second like they seemed to in preparing the question, we get the correct answer of 6:20:46.

okay but actually why would Oisin have apologized for his friends, he doesn’t NEED to be nice to Adaine. There’s no reason to be on her good side. I think regardless of his involvement in what clitertones plans are, he still has a big fat crush on adaine and I think that could work toward the bad kids advantage in the future.

I think the crux of what makes the rat grinders so damn rage-inducing is just. How fucking entitled their whole stance is. Like sure they've put in a lot of time! And frankly, if they were just trying to graduate, put in the work, and get out with average fucking grades that would be fine.
But instead the first thing we know about them is that they feel the treatment some people (the bad kids) get is unfair. And like. That's what makes it so frustrating when the revelation comes of what they've been doing for the last two years. Because in those two years they have risked nothing and helped no one. Killing rats in a trainee forest doesn't change anything. The rats are just there. They're not a threat to anyone, there isn't any danger. Nobody needs to be doing that.
Meanwhile, the bad kids have quite literally saved the world three fucking times. The number of people who have directly benefitted from the actions of the bad kids is astronomical! And they have risked so goddamn much in the process. They have repeatedly put everything they have and are on the line, with the only beneficial reward they've gotten being their grades. Hell, mostly their success has just resulted in them being burdened with more work!
So when these fucking rat grinders show up and start complaining that the bad kids are getting favored unreasonably, they and we all know how absolutely bullshit it is, because the reality is, the bad kids have put in so much more work than the rat grinders have, for barely any reward.

"Your body floods with cortisol and stress and rage hormones. Your heart rate picks up, and as it does, you begin to feel a rhythm to your own heartbeat that you recognize is mathematical. There's an asymptote. It picks up in speed. There is a mathematics to your rage. You can follow. Your drummer sensibilities come in, and you pick it up, hitting harder, rhythm faster." "Keepin' the beat." […] "The entire world of Aguefort has told you that it doesn't make sense to be an artificer and a barbarian, and for a moment you go, "No, there is a math to being mad.""

Brennan: this is a non-ferrous metal
Me, working on a PhD in materials science: huh, interesting, no iron. Presumably he’s trying to imply it’s non magnetic, oh yep bronze, non magnetic for sure. Is magnetism a type of damage in dnd…? I don’t think magnetism has ever come up in Dimension 20 before…
Emily: oh so it’s fey-
Me: You fool, FErrous doesn’t mean FEy, it means - oh…Right. Fairy rules

Solution to the Mathematics Portion of the Final Standard Examination
Two trains are driving toward one another on the same track. The first train leaves Elmville at 5:05AM traveling at 60 miles per hour. The second train leaves Bastion City, 135 miles away, at 5:30AM traveling at 70 miles per hour. What is the EXACT time the collision will occur?
Genuinely I was so delighted when this popped up on my screen, and very pleased that I got the right answer when I paused to solve, but in all fairness two minutes is barely enough time to solve it even with a calculator, which I don’t think any of them had.
Solution:
The first train leaves 25 minutes earlier than the second, and it is traveling at 60MPH, or a mile a minute. This means that when the second train starts at 5:30AM, it is 25 miles closer, and the distance between them is now only 135-25=110 miles.
Once the second train starts, they are moving towards one another at a speed of 60+70=130MPH. Covering 110 miles at 130MPH takes 110/130 or 11/13ths of an hour.
(This, I think, is the most devious part of the question, because so many numbers divide quite nicely into 60-minute hours but 13 is very much not one of them)
11/13ths times 60 (breaking out the calculator here) gets us a little over 50 minutes, 50 minutes past 5:30AM is 6:20AM. For the seconds part, we can multiply the decimal remainder by 60 again for 46.1538462 seconds.
