SYNOPSIS: Knowing too much may become your downfall: that was the motto that Kaeya lived with until the day he dies.
TW/s: delusional thinking, yandere tendencies, unrequited love, toxic dynamic/s, implications for Diluc’s matchup + darling, conniving bastard won’t say a fucking word, master manipulator, we are going down the memory lane of “fucking people up”, nsfw tws include human trafficking, experimentation, operating on individuals and other things. Please dni if you are uncomfortable.
NOTE FROM HR: Happy Valentine’s Day. Unfortunately, it seems that Kaeya has a few things he’d like to express. I do wonder what they are, considering he did seem a bit somber…
Tumblr media
Kaeya was never expecting to be able to get ‘in’ to such a tight-knit company like this, and especially when his lineage can cause people to raise some eyebrows. After all, no one in their right mind would have the chance of employing someone and getting them on the waitlist when they value the sense of ‘authenticity’ to their rentals.
And for him, he might be right. They do value that, but now, it seems they decided to forego their morals for how pretty he looked in the standards of the human population all across the globe.
Now, Celestia Inc. isn't all that bad. It's not that glorious as people make it out to be, all due to its shady past, but it was enough that people don't bother to raid it one day in hopes of having to take it down. After all, they are everywhere online: people may mention their sudden rise in certain niches, and some even mention their still standing operations. One of them was, surprisingly enough, MixMatch.
A dating site.
Back then, it was closed for a group of people to join. A payment for being a 'rental boyfriend', with its payment costs going as high as one can dream. They pay you at least 10 million when you manage to get matched with someone, and entertain them enough that they'd be satisfied. If they aren't, you get 5 to compensate for your troubles.
To Kaeya, this doesn't seem to be a 'dream come true'. To him, he knows that this feels more like a ploy to get others to join in. It was a marketing strategy, so when people join this 'free' and 'hot on the app store' dating app and website, they'd get traction oh so quickly.
He didn't like the idea. It sickened him. But he couldn't be bothered to correct them.
When he joined, he found that it was the same as those corporations he worked at prior. As a host in the past, he managed to get himself used to the workflow and gained traction in over a month. He's heard others comment on how he seemingly captured the public's eye from how different he is, and from his reputation from other countries, they were coming in like drones.
He liked the attention he's got because of that. And yet, for him, it all felt rather empty. Like it wasn't meant to be this long-lasting, and he needed— no, he craved for more.
He was greedy. A greedy man with a hollow heart.
Each smile he sent to his clients was not a genuine smile. Each wink and 'kind' gesture was all a ruse. A stage performance. He didn't feel anything for these people, and he didn't even feel the same as they do. Each confession they have for him was always met with the hollow words of 'I do feel the same way that you do', only to see them get the safer way to go.
He's aware of the dark side of MixMatch. After all, their Boss was nothing short of a past harbinger who stepped down. No one knows his name, no one knows who they are— but their workers all fear him.
He's seen him order the cleaners to get rid of the drugged clients. He's watched them all go down in their homes, ransack and ruin the place, and return with the client gagged and in a drugged rest. He watched with emptiness as they were then operated on with shady doctors, Dottore having a hand in some of these as he used their bodies for his sick desires.
He watched them become human sacks, their bodies empty of their organs but full of salt and junk, and for Dottore to tell them to take the organs down 'below'. He watched them become tied, their jello-like body being tossed to another set where they would be disposed of.
It's a fucked up operation.
Everyone knows this when they get signed up.
And yet, because of regulations, they can never breathe a word of what goes behind the scenes. Not to their friends, families, their coworkers, therapists, no.
Not a single word can be escaped from the confines of Celestia Inc.
Tumblr media
If you asked him how his first date went, Kaeya would answer that it went… Interesting.
Sof was definitely the type many would like, especially for a casa nova like him. She isn’t too picky with who she wants, and her affectionate behavior made it easier for the duo to banter. However, what he didn’t like was the fact she’s blind to any sign of danger.
Such is the payment of being the ideal girl many would date, he mused. But I don’t like people who can’t see what danger is, much less even enable that without thinking that they will get hurt, too.
Kaeya is picky with what he likes from someone, and it’s why he’s so high maintenance. To his credit, though, he makes it obvious in his profile. He wanted someone that would be responsible, that would be able to handle the spontaneity of their dates, and that they won’t even judge him if things were going somewhere that isn’t in their plans.
And although many did swipe right on him, he looked through their profiles before checking to see if they were worth it. The answer? None of them were.
Well, except a few, like Sof.
Which is why he’s now regretting that decision, as he realized that she’s simply not the one he preferred to stay with. She was interesting, but he disliked those who can’t even see past the warning signs that go to their face. He found it more or less… Idiotic, in his standards.
Alas, he needed to keep pretending. That’s what he’s good at, after all.
“Where do you want to go?” he asked Sof as they left the restaurant, his easy-going smile present on his face. “I have a few places we can go to next. Although, since it’s getting a bit late, we can plan on heading back home after a short shopping trip.”
“Oh! Uh… Yeah, we can go out and get some groceries. I wanted to try baking when we get home,” Sof replied, a pep in her step as they walked to where he parked his motorcycle. “Hehe, I didn’t know you were a cat person, Kaeya. Have you owned a cat before?”
“You can say that,” he answered, tossing a coin and catching it deftly with one hand—a small trick he’s used to doing when they were simply chatting. “I own a maine coon back home. My brother, Diluc, isn’t a fan of cats. Never was, anyway, since one scratched him when he was young.”
Granted, they were both young and their father warned him, but he knew they were both too mischievous to listen. It was why Diluc hated cats, even when he became a magnet to them.
“Really? Hehe, that’s funny! I remember a friend of mine who hates cats…”
Try as Kaeya might, he could only tune out what Sof was saying. There was a sense of difficulty in paying attention to someone he doesn’t really enjoy being around. He thought of the matches he swiped as those who he really wanted to be with, but meeting with Sof, he felt disappointed.
He didn’t see her as someone that fits his needs. She was just another one of the fakes he had to deal with later. Such a shame. He was starting to like her, too.
Alas, she isn’t perfect. She needs to be perfect. And he’s starting to get annoyed at the sound of her voice.
Too loud. Too piercing. Too imperfect.
No, she can never fit his standards. She never will.
“Kaeya?”
“Mm?” he hummed, seeing her grab her helmet and his hands instinctively grabbing his own. Realizing what he was doing, he laughed.
“Sorry, I just did them while I was zoning out. Hop on, Sof, we need to go to the nearest store and get those supplies.”
“Oh! Of course, hold on!”
He could feel the motorcycle move as Sof got on behind him, wrapping her arms around his waist. It reminded him of those scenes in romance movies, where the girl will cling onto her potential lover as they rode off, the sun setting in the background.
He recalled seeing it and feeling that it could be him with his lover, riding off the sunset and simply enjoying the air. The golden hour setting just right, the rays hitting their complexion as he looked at them. He remembered just how lovesick he got at the idea, he craved for that same feeling when he grew older.
Such wild fantasies. He needed to work for it, but how could he, when the people he met were too imperfect?
Riding off, he could see the scene play out. However, his eyes were focused on the road, his ears straining for the beeps and sounds around them. He needed to focus on where he was going, lest he, too, will drive off somewhere else.
Despite the noise that he heard, his mind remained clear.
He knew what needed to be done.
Tumblr media
Kaeya had so many things he's kept secret. Every client he has met, he's kept a secret that he can never tell.
Including the ones he sees ever so often.
It was a normal day when he came to the company as usual (and way before things went haywire, oddly enough), and he was assigned with yet another person to go on a date with. Although, the one he was assigned to date next had their form already in the red.
It all screamed imperfect to him. It just looked as though someone pushed her to do it all in one go, especially with the direct bias of seeing who she really likes in her profile.
It made him scowl.
How dumb were they to assign someone like that to him?
"█d████, are you sure you'll be assigning me with her?" Kaeya asked the matchmaker, watching them sigh as they gave him a look. "You know my tastes and all, but their form is rushed. I'm surprised that you haven't bothered trying to get them with someone else."
"Look, Kae, I tried. I tried, okay? But the others that fit them are taken by their previous matches. There is no way that they would simply accept getting switched like that," they explained, trying to assign his match. "Besides, we're running out of time. We need to get it sorted before the Boss gets mad!"
Kaeya scoffs. Seriously? They're always so concerned about someone else, it's ridiculous... And laughable, to boot.
"What will the boss do, hm? Would he come down and interfere?" he taunted them, scowling. "You and I know that he doesn't bother to try. All he does is simply hide himself in there because he's become too paranoid to even care."
"Paranoid? Paranoid? Please, Kaeya, do you honestly think he'd be too paranoid when he's raised a hand against me and the others?"
Kaeya's eyes narrowed. It was true that he raised a hand against them, but that simply proved his point. He didn't exactly understand why they would be so scared of a middle aged man that may drop dead over what happened weeks ago.
"Oh, that's right. You guys are paid enough to not care, don't you?" they taunted, laughing at his face. It sounded so... Forced. Mocking, even. It sounded like they were at their wits end with him, like the stress from the job got to their head.
"Yeah. Yeah, that seems to be it. You all have no remorse after being serial murderers, huh? And for what, your clients?"
"I'd stop talking if I were you, █████e," he warned, but they laughed at his face once more.
"Me? Stop? Never! You guys are all such a pain, I'm tired of playing nice!"
Even if Kaeya wanted to, he had to hold his tongue. Watching their face contort to mania, he was reminded of why the job was so twisted to the point of being inhumane.
It drives their workers into madness.
Watching Cupid lose it, he stepped back, mumbling an apology as he turned to leave. Even when he closed the door, he could still hear the echoes of their laughter, soon followed with sobbing. He knew that they were at their limit, but still...
...
He watched Eros come by, giving him a knowing look.
"Did you push them over the edge?" Eros asked, scowling. "They're going to leave the company after this week. Don't make this harder than it has to be, Alberich."
"I didn't expect them to break this much and you know it, Eros," he reasoned, but they only shook their head and walked off towards their office.
"That doesn't mean that you and everyone else weren't at fault."
Watching Eros enter their office, he could only sigh. Perhaps he's in a bit of denial, but he didn't think that she, of all people in the industry, would ever say that.
It truly goes to show where his dedication and loyalty lies.
Tumblr media
If there was one thing he was right on, it would be his second date.
Unlike Sof, his date with Eli did not go as well as he had feasibly hoped for. Maybe he had his doubts set too high, because he was convinced that she simply wasn’t fit for the app as a whole. To him, he had thought that she would ever learn from her mistakes, but the way she acted like she was the one being inconvenienced irked him.
He hated that she’s too avoidant. He hated those types of people.
To him, he never understood why you’d go on the app to find love. Will you ever treat those you dislike the same way? Act like you were the one being inconvenienced, and not the one that has to deal with your childish acts?
Kaeya can be mischievous in his own way, yes, but even he has decorum. And frankly, he despised those who think they can act so two-faced with him. He isn’t a fool.
While his date was busy acting like they were in a good relationship (and not one where she wanted to ditch him in the middle of the day), he took the chance to check on his phone. Already, he could see notifications from TeyvaTweets, rambling about how her recent date is not the one for her.
[ I wanted Alhaitham or Wriothesley, but this guy swiped right instead. ]
[ He’s pretty, but I don’t really like him all that much lol. ]
[ Oh god im gonna get back on my date, going to lyk if it goes horribly. ]
He turned the phone off and frowned. He didn’t want to show it, but he does sometimes wonder if her being nice was simply just a ploy to keep him entertained. After all, she has expressed (on her private account, that is) that she’d drop Kaeya to “go after that hottie”, whilst attaching the photo of the boss of MixMatch.
What a joke.
They all know that the Boss would simply use her and leave her to rot. No one would look at him, go through his background, and tweet at how they can still try to get to him. ‘To get to know him better’, as one would say.
“Hey, uh, I gotta go. I have to go to the hospital to check on them.”
Lies. He knew she didn't. Besides, she couldn’t be bothered to look him straight in the eye as she told him. What is he, an idiot?
Still, he was glad it was over. Putting on a face of mock concern, his brows furrowed and he spoke.
“Oh? I see… Do you need me to drive you there?”
“No need! I can handle it,” Eli answered, packing up her things as they left the cafe awkwardly. “I’m so sorry if we have to cut it short. You must have so many plans for our date today, especially when things are getting hectic in the agency.”
Kaeya laughed, but not out of amusement. It was simply out of… politeness, in a way. Sure, he had work to do with the agency, but what they’re doing is far more different. And for him, he could hardly care if he had lost that job because he decided to slack off.
After all, he knew his date didn’t bother to give him the respect he deserved. So why should he do that in return? He’s bound to see her tweet again about this ‘awful experience’ or something.
“It's alright, I was thinking it’d come to this. I’ll catch you later then.”
Waving at Eli, he watched as she did the same and left, though the sight of her walking so stiffly as if she was scared of him brought him a bit of amusement in return. When he was sure she was gone, he lowered it with a sigh.
Another failed date, and this one was the worst he’s gotten. Unlike Sof, he didn’t feel all too bad about Eli—after all, both of them never liked each other, so why should he?
Pulling up his phone, he began to dial someone’s number. He, truthfully, never thought of needing help from the likes of him, but he had to call it when the truth was staring at him in the face.
That he and a few others needed their services to deal with a few too many bad matches, and especially ones that want to get near to those that will never look twice. Especially those who thought of him as a good guy for his actions.
Then, he clicks the call button. And it starts to ring.
He could vaguely feel it vibrate as he waited for someone to answer. The caller ID was someone that he knew too well, and especially with how their relationship is like after everything that has happened.
Each time he didn’t feel them pick up, he could only sigh and head to his ride. He knew they were avoiding it, but he wasn’t going to let up until he’s sure they’d take the call.
And when he felt his hopes dwindle, he felt the vibration of his phone stop, alongside a gruff and annoyed voice.
“Kaeya. I thought you and I agreed not to call each other when we’re both busy in work hours.”
“Hmm, we have, but I just needed to ask you a bit of favor, mr. Diluc,” he replied, humming in amusement. “Are you still looking for people that can help you with the wine tasting? Especially that new brew you made?”
He could hear Diluc take a deep breath, and the sigh that followed made him smile a tad wider. Even when they were all twisted in their way, he knew that Diluc remained the same way that Kaeya always knew him to be.
It’s a shame, though. They aren’t as close as he remembered, especially after what happened years ago.
“... Yes, I am. I found some that are willing, but they haven’t come back to inform me when they’ll be available.”
“I see… Well, I have someone I would love for you to meet. I’m sure you’ll like her—she fits you just right.”
Tumblr media
No man could say a single soul what Kaeya is capable of.
Some rumored that he was a demented man, masquerading as but as a young police officer who’s mischievous and doesn’t enjoy spending long hours in his work. Others, though, say that he may be one of those people who are involved in the mess that was the Ghost Killings, at how his smile and demeanor can be so… off-putting.
As for his beloved, the one he deemed to be perfect, well… It would be neither. Kaeya was Kaeya, after all. Even if he were to be sick in the head, there was no way in Hell would anyone be able to get a single word from him.
Descending downstairs, Kaeya looked over at the room he’s decorated all for his beloved. The one he was truly, truly meant to be was all kept safely in there, double locked for his safety, and so that no one may find them. Grabbing the keys, he began to insert them in the padlocks and turn them, pushing the door open when he was done getting through the restraints.
Laid before him was his own personal darling, all laid so pretty and docile on the bed he set for him. Sure, he couldn’t speak, for his mouth had been gagged, but those dull eyes spoke more than Kaeya’s one eye could ever hope for.
“I’m home, darling,” he called out, the lovesick man stumbling to the rather complacent lover he had in his house. “Oh, I do hope I haven’t left you rotting here for so long, my dearest. Work has been exhausting for me to deal with.”
They hadn’t said a word to him, but he didn’t care. It was almost like he heard them whisper something to him, making him laugh like he was demented.
“You’re jealous? Over what, pray tell?”
Silence. Then another beat of laughter, this time more unhinged and loose than the first.
“Over them? Darling, you wound me! They’re far, far too imperfect. I have simply made sure that the ones I got were to be taken care of. You always said you wanted to have their eyes.”
Oh, he’s aware of what happened to Ba. Ba had an accident years, years ago. Their relationship had been rocky, sure, but that accident had led Kaeya to go through grief. It was almost ironic, for he experienced the first of it by his adoptive father dying.
He was unable to do anything for his adopted father. Diluc resented him for his inaction, thus, their separation. And with poor Ba… He resents the world for taking him away.
The first time he’s felt love was during college with Ba, but it was the first toxic one he had. He hadn’t been the best man for his first love, and it led to them having arguments and extreme disagreements. It wasn’t always like this, but it hurts Kaeya when they fight.
It hurts to see the person he adored too much to hate him. Spew his name out like it’s a sin.
So when Ba died during the height of their biggest fight, Kaeya was going through it again. However, he had the means to… Assist Ba in his partings.
All it truly took was the cost of his heart and his eyes to get back what’s his.
Tracing over the open chest, he grabbed the bloodied, unbeating heart that he got from Eli’s corpse. Ah, it was too imperfect, but slotting it inside Ba’s felt like it was meant to be. Those eyes he took from another girl had been replaced, slotting in the ones from Sol.
He always resented those that couldn’t see, nor those who couldn’t feel.
But now, looking at his lover who owned those faults, he couldn’t help but laugh and love them all the same.
Ba is now complete. Kaeya knows that.
And yet those tears still fell as the beat of his heart was the only one left in the world.
The world that took Ba away, and his humanity along with it.

Skincare tips for my sakhis
So, recently I have started earning money on the side and I have started investing and researching on skincare in a better way. So here's my two cents for you guys:
1. Go to a damn dermatologist
I know we all have been there. Bought a lot of stuff based from reel recommendations that didn't really end up helping us at all. See, I know we all feel like its such a hassle going to a dermatologist or that it's pricey or whatever. But pick your poision. Stuck in an endless loop of buying products that end up hurting both your skin and wallet or going to a dermatologist and ending the cycle. Go to the doctor and ask a lot of questions. Get your moneys worth. Don't just go and take whatever prescription they give out either. Talk to them. Ask questions as to why the items they recommend is better. What type of products you should avoid. What ingredients to look out for. Everything. Trust me, it would save you a lot of money.
2. Please, for the love of God, don't buy anything recommended by any social media platform
I am not saying what these people recommend is bad. It might be good. It might even do wonders on your skin. But listen. Most of the time these influencers are paid to promote a brand. It's not an honest review as they claim it to be. Even when it might be a honest review, you need to understand one really important thing. Everybody is different. What they are suggesting you to buy might have worked on them, but it's not guaranteed it might work on you. There are a lot of factors to consider when buying skincare products. Whats your skin type, the environmental factor, your skin retention, etc. So, its always, always, always better to go to the direct source- a dermatologist. And you know look at it this way. A dermatologist have to recommend skincare products that will work on you. Because they need you to trust them. They need it for their business. They are not necessarily trying to promote a certain brand.
3. Opt for non- hormone disruptors and non-fragnant stuff
A lot of commercial skincare products contain hormone disruptors and fragrance, which aren’t ideal for long-term use. I get it – sometimes it feels like buying "clean" products is an expensive luxury, but doing a little research can go a long way, and it’s easier than you think. A lot of apps scan products and list out the harmful ingredients in them. If you are more lazy, then just chatgpt it. I get the money factor. If you don't think you can afford the most clean products atleast buy better alternatives. I am not saying cheap is always bad. Just do your own research before investing your money anywhere.
4. Water, diet and exercise
I know, I know. Everybody says this. Drink your water. Have a good appetite and exercise. But honestly thats the cheapest way for getting the healthy, glowy skin you want. Trust me, I did the math. And I am a person who spends the most on outdoor food. When I saw how much I am really spending on skincare and outdoor food, THAT really humbled me. All you have to do is be consistent. I am not saying drop your junk food. Just put in some work on your own self. There are always alternatives or sneaky ways to work in good food, water and exercise in your daily life. You just have to be willing to do it. I am not saying I have the best diet right now either. All you have to do is get to know yourself better. Try to find out why you lean towards junk food more than healthy food. Why you don't drink your water and just try to combat the issue. Waking up one day and decising you are going to be completely clean is an unfair delusion that will ultimately crash and fail. You have to dig deeper and find the root causes of your habits. Like in my case with food, I realized the reason is convenience. I don't have time to make good food at all. Buying chips is way cheaper and convenient than cooking my own food. When I realized that this is whats stopping me to eat better, I started opting for cleaner snack options. Cause honestly thats the best I can do right now in my current situation. We all are hustling right now. You shouldn't put so much pressure on yourself about these things. It's about trying to be a little better than yesterday. Make small achievable goals. And trust me, it would be very easy to handle the water, diet and exercise routine too.
So, that's all for today! I hope you all have a good day <3

Announcement!
Since I have a couple of parts left for Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget, I have decided to start a new project after I’m finished. I've been nostalgic lately so I have been going down Memory Lane with my childhood shows on various sites and apps, and one of the shows I loved when I was a kid is Groundling Marsh. I don't know how many people remember it but it was a pretty classic children's puppet series.
Tumblr media
Groundling Marsh takes place in a magical swamp. Most of the mutant-like characters are Groundlings but look very different from each other. They can be described as any combination of animal, human, elf and plant. One of the characters is a robot named Stacks. Generally, humans never appear in the series except as an alien presence represented by a boot or a voice. Most often, humans come to the marsh to dump trash and disrupt the ecosystem. The show was designed to be educational so the story of each episode includes morals such as friendship, honesty, caring and protection of the environment. Not to mention there are songs included in each episode and a special animated story mostly told by Eco.
Characters
Galileo - a young leader Groundling. Relatively elf-like in appearance and perhaps meant to resemble a Native American person. He calls himself an explorer so he is constantly exploring and mapping the marsh. He is also curious about the world beyond the marsh, where the humans live. He built Stacks out of pieces of junk that humans dumped in the marsh. He is very friendly, but will sometimes lose his patience.
Tumblr media
Maggie - a young tomboyish Groundling. She is roughly humanoid but more animal-like in appearance than some of the other Groundlings. She is an extremely rambunctiously energetic sporty female that often gets herself into trouble due to her sometimes immature behavior. However, she is very well-intentioned, tries to help others, and is curious about the world around her. She is often seen carrying a small, green, stuffed animal whom she calls Mossy Bear and whom she treats like a friend.
Tumblr media
Mud/Slinger - the only Two-Headed Groundling in the world and the resident inventor. Mud and Slinger are really two separate individuals who share a body. Mud has light purple skin, a round face, spectacles perched on his nose, and is the one who does most of the scientific research and inventing. Slinger has green skin, more angular facial features and is more of a salesman, concentrating of finding uses for the inventions and relying more on intuition then knowledge. Both Mud and Slinger have troll-like appearances with large furry ears and bright blue-green except on their faces, hands and toes. Mud/Slinger is the strongest Groundling in the marsh and is always creating inventions out of the junk that humans throw away. Often, these inventions malfunction.
Tumblr media
Stacks - a large robot that Galileo built out of junk that humans have brought to the marsh and brought to life by a powerful lightning storm. He eventually becomes a mobile unit when his essential components are placed in a special motorized vehicle (which Mud/Slinger created for him using an old shopping cart) and for which he is very grateful (thought he gets carried away at first). Mostly, he is humble, kind and tries to answer the Groundlings' questions with information from his database. He sometimes feels insignificant being "just a machine". He has a long neck that looks like a very thick vacuum cleaner tube. His head is a tall metal canister with a handle that forms his nose, a large mouth at the bottom, a pair of eyes farther up and a hairbrush on top. Several cables dangle from his head down to the heap of machinery below him. A computer monitor forms his chest, while further down a reel of film from a film projector on one side and a mechanical arm on the other side protrude from the heap.
Tumblr media
Eco - a teacher mostly human in appearance and a source of guidance and solace for the Groundlings. Having lived in the marsh for over 2,000 years, she is the wisest and most spiritual of the Groundlings, and is kind, with a quirky sense of humor. She is the keeper of Groundling Mythology, which holds the answers to most of nature's secrets. Her beliefs are similar to that of Romani and, to a lesser extent, Buddhists. She can talk to animals and takes care of the marsh. Sometimes Eco temporarily gives an important duty or the responsibility of a rare plant or artifact to Maggie or Galileo (often to test their virtue and help them learn life lessons about responsibility).
Tumblr media
Hegdish - a trickster, a rival, a grouch, and the show's only antagonist (added in the second season). Cynical, pessimistic, sarcastic and lazy, he sometimes makes the effort to horde the things he likes, trips up the plans of the other Groundlings, give misleading information, and waste resources. His bitterness springs from his back story (back when he and Eco were much younger and good friends) in which they were both given the chance by the Tree Elders to learn how to speak with animals and be granted other powers and responsibilities. Now Hegdish jealously ridicules Eco whenever he can. Despite generally avoiding his fellow Groundlings, Hegdish will often share knowledge from his travels and sometimes cooperate with them.
Tumblr media
Crystal - Eco's grandniece who is introduced around the end of the third season. She is sweet, bubbly and resembles a soft bunny that lives in a beautiful cavern. Her long ears giver her the power to hear long distances and because she is an Undergroundling, she can also see in the dark. In her introduction episode, Crystal comes to visit Eco and has to wear glasses to protect her eyes. She soon becomes fast friends with Maggie. While not one of the original characters, Crystal continued to appear on the show, sometimes as the main protagonist of an episode. A running gag is Hegdish's tendency to annoy her by mispronouncing her name like calling her Crispy, Creepy, Cookie, Cracker or Christmas.
Tumblr media
Anyway, what I thought I'd do is after I watch each episode, I would provide a post with a short description of the episode, write out the story that's told in the episode, give out the names of the songs provided, give my rating of the episode out of 10 and even write out the link on where to watch the episode the post is about. I thought this would be a fun little project during any spare time I have. But for now, in case anyone wants a head start, the link for the series is: https://tubitv.com/series/300011072/groundling-marsh

Ways I save money:
I have lived low income for a very long time and this is how I save money. Personal care: I leave my hair long and put it up if I want it out of the way, only cutting the ends maybe once a year or less. No dye, no "styles", no lotions/potions, no hot appliances. Simple and healthy. I never do mani/pedi unless I do it myself, but no polishes. I only use a one skin moisturizer. Also no make-up. I am 60 and people can't believe how young I look. Shoot if I look that young, why gob it up with expensive bottles and tubes of stuff nobody needs putting MY money into some company's pocket. I need my money. They don't.
Clothing: I only buy what I need and sometimes it is used or given to me as a gift. I wear it until it falls apart. I don't have many clothes. How many shirts can you wear at once? One, right? So how many clothes do you really need. I would say I maybe spend $100-200/yr on clothes, probably most socks and underwear. I have a coat I've been wearing for 40 years. Still looks great because it was a good coat. Laundry is only done when it is dirty. I did buy a small portable washer because the laundromat is a killer. This cost $350 and saves me $900/yr. I dry everything outside on a drying rack or inside on the same rack in the winter. My clothes don't wear out as quickly.
Housing: We rent and we rent less than maybe what we want and then make do. If they approve a mortgage for 200,000, buy a house for 150,000. If you can afford 1000 for rent, only spend 750. You get my drift. Always live under what you can afford because all the maintenance, insurance, taxes, and upkeep will also be less. This way you can save. I seriously have very few cleaning products. A bit of all purpose cleaner (I honestly just dilute ammonia with water) goes a long way. Nobody needs all the potions people create. I have simply used hot water on the floors. How sterile does a floor have to be? You're going to walk on it immediately and it will be dirty again, so really, who cares. I have the same old furniture I have had for years. Decent quality, well taken care of, and its lasted decades. Some of it was my grandmother's or mother's. It still works.
Food: LEARN TO COOK FROM SCRATCH. EAT LESS (I can guarantee most people eat way too much of all the wrong things). FINISH IT ALL AND USE THE LEFTOVERS. I buy stuff on clearance, even fruits and veg and quickly process them, stew them, blanch and freeze them, or whatever is appropriate. I have gotten a whole box of fruit and veg for $5 and not one bit of it is wasted in this way. Beans and pulses are good protein. Learn to cook them. Never buy processed, pre-cooked, out of the box foods. You are paying for someone else to do the work. Make a big batch of something and eat it all week, or freeze the remainder and make something different mid-week. LEARN TO COOK. LEARN TO COOK. LEARN TO COOK. Shop the sales at one store only. What's on sale/clearance is what I am eating this week, but this only applies to fruit/veg, meat/dairy, and simple foods. Junk food on sale still isn't food. If you have to make all your own cakes and cookies, you'll eat less, because you can't be bothered. Don't buy ready made.
Transportation: Buy used, no-fun, and buy cash if you can. Keep it until it literally gives up the ghost. Keep it maintained. If you can't afford to do this, you can't afford a car SO GET RID OF IT. Any place that is within a 30 minute walk, WALK, don't waste the gas. You DO need the exercise. Combine errands or do errands to or from work so you aren't making extra trips. Obey traffic rules at all times, it keeps your insurance low. I have a 2012 Civic and pay under $70/month.
Time: STOP WASTING IT. Take all social media off your phone. Take all shopping apps off your phone. Throw away all advertising that comes into the house immediately. Get ad-blockers so you're not tempted to bloody shop. Your money belongs in your pocket, not theirs. No matter what they tell you, they're not doing you favours. If you aren't in front of a screen, you can cook, do laundry, clean your home, mend, iron, and take care of what is yours so it last longer. GET OFF SOCIAL MEDIA THAT WASTES YOUR TIME. The only thing I have is Tumblr and I am on it maybe a half hour every couple of days.
Entertainment: Use the library. Everything in it is free: movies, books, audiobooks, games, stuff, TV shows, printing costs only a few cents and saves you on stupid dried out ink for your printer you rarely use. Play board games or video games. I can rent both at the library. Visit your local pool, park, join a community sports team, take a hike, go to the beach. If it costs a lot, somebody is benefiting more than you. Change your way of thinking. Instead of thinking "a nice dinner out with a few drinks and a show $$$", think instead of going for a walk with a friend/family and maybe grabbing an ice-cream and a coffee at McDonalds or somewhere cheap. You'll have just as great of a conversation and your bank account won't look like a yawning empty cavern.
I guarantee you that I am just as happy as you, and probably, because I have no debt at all, I might even be more happy than you. Think about it.

Unused applications take up significant space. To uninstall them:
Go to Settings > Apps > Apps & features.

Windows Update Cleanup
Old update files can take up substantial space. Disk Cleanup includes an option to remove these:
Open Disk Cleanup and select Clean up system files.
Choose Windows Update Cleanup.
System Restore and Shadow Copies
System Restore points and shadow copies can consume significant disk space. Manage these by:
Typing “System Protection” in the search bar.
Selecting the drive and clicking Configure.
Adjusting the Max Usage slider to limit space usage.
7. Using Third-Party Disk Cleaners
Third-party tools like CCleaner provide more comprehensive cleaning options. They can remove junk files, clean registries, and manage startup programs to free up space.

Identifying and managing large files is crucial. Use tools like WinDirStat to find large files and folders. Consider moving non-essential large files to external storage.
9. Moving Data to External Storage
Free up space by moving data such as videos, photos, and documents to external hard drives or USB sticks. Ensure you regularly back up important data to avoid loss.

How do people work for 8 hours a day? I feel so beat up. I really hope I can settle out and not be so overwhelmingly exhausted when I get home. Because there are things for me to do!!! But I got home and I have been in bed for 3 hours. I have accomplished nothing. All I want to do is go to sleep. I might have to just start sleeping for an hour when I get home. I can spend every evening just laying here.
It didn't help that I was filled with anxiety last night. My mom asked me to call her and we talked about some stuff, things that would be sorted out. But when I get overly anxious about junk I start doing compulsive math in my head and on my phone. And it's like I don't do well with holding numbers in my head! It causes more stress!! But for some reason that's where my brain does and start trying to solve the problem with division. It's so dumb.
It made it really hard to sleep. But once I did it wasn't a bad sleep. I gave myself an extra 10 minutes when my alarm went off.
James had packed up my little lunch bag. I got dressed. I felt good. My hair was bothering me a little but it was fine. It would be a good day.
Me and James walked downstairs together. Had a smooch outside. And then we were both off.
I got to camp at 8 and jumped right into resetting my boxes in the art building. I would call my dad and we talked for a half hour which was good. Got some questions answered and some mysteries solved. It was also just nice to talk.
After I got off the phone with dad I got back to sorting out my boxes. I would get a call from Heather that she had forgotten her key at home and was just popping over to get her laptop. She was finishing up a grant and wanted to work at home so she would be distracted. Which was totally fair. But I would let her in and she said she would be back later.
It was chilly this morning. Which was lovely. I'm going to have to keep a fleece at camp or on my car again. I have my old Franklin institute hoodie in our car emergency bag, and I would wear that all morning. It wasn't perfect but it was comfortable.
I would finish up all my boxes. And sorted the new books I got. And then headed down to the office.
I would look at my to do list. And decided I would start working on the specialty lessons for next summer. This is probably going to take a while but I would at least start writing out some ideas.
I would also remember I wanted to make a gyn appointment. To finally get my IUD out. Which is so scary. I loved having my IUD, but getting it put in was one of the worst things that I've ever experienced. So I really really hope that it isn't as horrible. I also don't know what's going to happen after. I haven't had a period since 2017, not in a real way. So I'm planning on going and buying some of those period underwear? Technology has improved leaps and bounce probably. Well see what happens.
It was a huge issue making this stupid appointment though. Planned Parenthood only has one phone number for the whole state. But my laptop browser was to old to make an appointment?? I've never seen that before. So I had to download the app on my phone but I got it eventually. It did take over a half hour and was very frustrating but I got it done.
At 11 I drove up to low ropes to set that up for our program. And when I got back down to the office Celia and Sarah were coming in.
We chatted and I worked on the lesson research. Elizabeth had been out for a few hours searching for cleaner for the pool because something had gone wrong with the filter and the water looked green. But the pool supply place wouldn't deliver it before the wedding this weekend. But once she came back she told us that the Y leadership staff that was having a retreat at camp this week was our program group! None of us put that together. So we would have a little 11 person adult group. Which was just fine with us.
They wanted to start around 1230. So I ate my little lunch and then we headed over to the lodge.
The next hour and change was actually a lot of fun. We met them at the lodge. I have a little intro and introduced us to the group. And then we walked across camp.
Me and Sarah chatted with a few people in the front about how camp runs. Celia was making sure the slower walkers didn't get lost. They were a nice little group, but not very outdoorsy. But that was alright. We kept everyone together and made it to low ropes in one piece.
I lead the group in rules and safety. And then each of us were in charge of an element. I think we did a really good job encouraging and no one got hurt. They were fun. They each had what they called a "journey partner" and would support each other and it was very sweet.
Once they had all made it through the elements we went over to zip. I was trying my best to keep us on time.
I helped Sarah set up harnesses while Celia walked to the second tower to catch people. Some people were really nervous but everyone went and I was really proud of them. I had some nice chats about camp and art and stuff and it was good. They were a fun group.
After the last set went on the zip I told Sarah I was going to go out low ropes away and said goodbye to the group.
And after I put away low ropes Sarah and Celia met with at the top of the hill. Chloe drove over to say hi, and she said I can have more horse hair in two weeks. Amazing.
We walked back down to the office. Where they told me they both use hand soap to wash their faces. Horrifying. And when we got to the office Lou had brought us all hoagies! What a sweetie. I pulled off all the meat and enjoyed it. He also brought a beautiful peach cake to share with us. So sweet.
I was pretty exhausted at this point. But I would spend most of the next hour working on my specialty lessons. Heather and Elizabeth asked me if I could go pick up a 100 cup coffee percolator from the restaurant store. I've never been to a restaurant store! I decided to go in the morning since it's on the way. I hope it's a neat place.
I would finish up what I could and then at 4 I said goodbye and headed home.
And I was beat. I wasn't dizzy tired thankfully. But I was very much excited to go home.
There was a lot of traffic so I took a strange route home. But it was fine and I was home right after 430.
James was starting to make dinner but I wasn't hungry at all after the sandwich from Lou. So they said they would stop it now and make it later. I would go take a shower. And put on soft clothes. And James did their podcast. They have listener guests this week. So that's neat.
I would just lay in bed. I wanted to do stuff. But every time I tried to get up I was just so unhappy and dizzy I just had to lay back down. I just watched videos and read stuff on my phone. I hate feeling like I wasted the evening. But I also didn't rest. I need to actually sleep for an hour so I can be half way awake for most of the night. It's such a hard balance
James would finish up their recording and made us mozzarella sticks and a Caeser salad. They put grated parmesan on top and then also went and put some grated parmesan in sweetp's wet food. It was very silly. But I was feeling happy, despite how exhausted I feel.
Now the sun has gone down and we are getting ready for bed.
Tomorrow I have some to do's I hope to get off my list. I hope it doesn't exhaust me so badly. James says we can pull down the Halloween stuff and decorate a little tomorrow. I'm looking forward to that.
Sleep well everyone take care of each other.

A Beginner’s Guide to Using TotalAV Antivirus
So, your computer’s been acting weird lately.
Slower than usual. Ads popping up outta nowhere. Files taking forever to open. Maybe it’s just being moody. Or maybe... it’s something else.
That’s when the thought hits. Could be a virus. Or malware. Or some other sneaky thing crawling around behind the scenes.
You Google around. Read a few reviews. Then, one name keeps coming up: TotalAV.
Now you're here. Curious. Wondering what TotalAV really is, and more importantly, how the heck you actually use it.
Let’s break it down. No tech talk. No confusing jargon. Just a real guide—for real people—trying to keep their stuff safe.
What is TotalAV, Anyway?
Okay, first things first.
TotalAV is an antivirus software. But it's more than just that. It’s like a bodyguard for your computer, your phone, your whole digital life. It’s built to find threats, block them, and keep your stuff locked down.
Viruses. Malware. Ransomware. Spyware. You name it—TotalAV’s got it covered.
But it’s not just for stopping the bad stuff. It also helps speed up your system. Cleans junk files. Even protects you online with a built-in VPN. Handy, right?
Installing It Is the Easy Part
So let’s say you’ve bought it. Or you’re on a free trial. Either way, installing TotalAV is actually kinda simple.
You head over to their site. Download the software. Double-click. Follow the steps.
Boom. It’s in.
Once it's installed, TotalAV launches itself. You don’t even have to go hunting for the app. It just pops up like, “Hey, I’m ready. Let’s get started.”
It’ll ask if you want to run a quick scan. You should. It’s the easiest way to see what’s lurking on your system.
The First Scan – A Little Nerve-Wracking
Now, here’s where it gets real.
That first scan? It can be a little scary. You sit there watching the progress bar move across your screen, wondering if it’s gonna dig up anything nasty.
Spoiler: It probably will.
Old tracking cookies. Junk files. Maybe even a trojan or two hiding deep in your downloads folder.
But that’s the beauty of it. TotalAV doesn’t just point out the bad stuff—it actually gets rid of it. Click “Resolve,” and you’re done. Clean.
Feels good, right?
The Dashboard Isn’t Just Pretty—It’s Smart
Open TotalAV and you’ll see what they call the "dashboard."
It’s clean. Not cluttered. Everything you need is right there—virus scan, system boost, disk cleaner, web shield. All laid out in a way that doesn’t make you squint or feel dumb.
You want a quick scan? Click. Done.
Need a deeper, full system scan? It’s just another click.
Wanna check your system's performance? Yup. Click again.
There’s even a Safe Browsing feature that uses a VPN to hide your activity. Total privacy. No one watching.
It’s one of those things you didn’t know you needed until you try it.
TotalAV on Your Phone? Yes, Please
Here’s something a lot of people don’t think about: your phone needs antivirus too.
We carry our lives in these things. Photos, messages, banking info. And yep—phones get malware too.
TotalAV has mobile apps for both Android and iOS. You can scan your phone, clean up space, and even use the VPN to stay safe while browsing on public Wi-Fi.
It’s all synced up. Simple. One account, multiple devices. That's it.
Real Life Happens. And TotalAV Helps
Let me tell you a quick story.
My aunt—not exactly a tech wizard—called me one night freaking out. Her laptop was frozen. Weird ads popping up. Files missing.
She thought she broke it. She didn’t.
Turns out she clicked a shady link in an email. Classic mistake.
I told her to try TotalAV. She didn’t even know what antivirus was. I walked her through the setup over the phone. Ten minutes later? It found four threats. Cleaned everything. Laptop running smooth again.
Now she swears by it. Even uses the VPN on her iPad. TotalAV kinda saved her digital life.
But What If Something Goes Wrong?
Look, nothing’s perfect. Even the best software might hit a snag.
That’s where total av customer support comes in. Whether it’s a billing issue or something’s not working right, they’ve got a team ready to help. Real people. Not some robot copy-pasting answers.
They walk you through it. Step by step. It’s actually kind of refreshing to talk to a support team that wants to help.
It’s Not Just About Viruses Anymore
Here’s the thing. Antivirus today isn’t just about fighting viruses.
It’s about protecting your identity. Your data. Your digital footprint.
TotalAV gets that. Which is why it includes more than just basic protection. You’ve got phishing protection. Email breach monitoring. Tools to stop sneaky ad trackers from following you around.
It’s a full security suite. Like a digital guardian angel for all your screens.
Final Thoughts: It’s Worth It
If you're someone who’s not super tech-savvy—or even if you are—TotalAV just makes life easier.
It doesn’t nag you with annoying popups. It runs quietly in the background, doing its thing. And when you need it, it’s there. Ready.
Setup is a breeze. Scans are quick. Protection is solid. And best of all? You don’t have to think too hard to use it.
At the end of the day, you want to feel safe when you’re online. Whether you're working, shopping, streaming, or just wasting time on Reddit—TotalAV helps you do that without stress.
So if you’ve been thinking about getting antivirus but weren’t sure where to start, this is it. Start here. Start simple.
Start with TotalAV.

The 2025 security checkup is complete
Back in January, I said that I was working on a security and privacy checkup for all my currently-maintained software projects. That project is now complete, though some projects will have further updates to enhance user security. Here's a summary of what I changed.
Functional changes
Link Cleaner, my web app for removing tracking parameters and other junk from URLs, no longer has a History page with previously-cleaned links. The usage of that page was very low, and its role as an always-on activity log could be a minor privacy risk if a threat actor gained physical access to the browser or device. All of Link Cleaner's functionality still runs on-device without sending links anywhere.
I also removed the public Plausible Analytics page for Nexus Tools, my installer and updater for Android SDK Platform Tools. It was a cool way to show off how many people were using Nexus Tools on which platforms, and didn't show any personally-identifiable information, but it probably doesn't need to be public.
PhotoStack Classic, the version of PhotoStack intended for old web browsers, was using an outdated version of the JZip library that had some minor security issues and has been fixed. The regular PhotoStack web app was not vulnerable to that exploit.
I'm considering other functionality changes to improve privacy and security, like updates to embedded content in the Peek extension, but there aren't any more super pressing changes that I am aware of right now. Finally, I shut down the static web hosts for two old web apps, Planr and Rockwell, since they might have privacy or security issues and (to my knowledge) no one is using them.
Privacy policies
Most of the work here was creating detailed privacy policies for each project, explaining exactly what data is collected, if any data is transmitted to me, and the options for opting out of data collection/transmission. The privacy policy for each project is under PRIVACY.md on the GitHub repository, somewhere in the interface for web apps, and in the product listing for browser extensions.
You can check out the Nexus Tools privacy policy as an example. Most of them are very short, since none of my projects collect personally-identifiable information or function as commercial products.
Staying secure
My software projects are all open-source on GitHub, and I'm doing my best to keep them as private and secure as possible while still giving me basic analytics data for focused development. I don't want your private data.
If you like my software projects, consider joining the Patreon if you haven't already, which gets you access to my monthly work logs. You can also donate through PayPal or Cash App, but I don't have a way to grant access to rewards through those options. Donations and patrons help pay for hosting costs, the Plausible Analytics subscription, domain registrations, and other costs.

How to Declutter Your Digital Space Without Lifting a Finger (Almost)
Tumblr media
Digital clutter is sneaky. One day your phone and laptop are running smoothly, and the next, your desktop looks like a file explosion and your cloud storage is screaming for mercy.
The good news? You don’t need to spend hours cleaning it all up.
If you’ve already peeked at the lazy but genius ways to organize your digital life, this guide takes it a step further. These strategies are so effortless, it’s almost like you're not doing anything at all — just the way we like it.
1. Automate Your Cloud Storage Cleanup
Cloud platforms like Google Drive or Dropbox offer easy-to-use filters and automation tools. You can set them to auto-delete trash, auto-archive old files, or even color-label folders for visual clarity.
Try this lazy trick: Use Google Workspace’s "Storage Management" tool to bulk delete large files, duplicates, and old backups.
2. Use Smart Tools Like “Cleanfox” for Your Inbox
Manual unsubscribing is so last year. Tools like Cleanfox or Leave Me Alone scan your inbox, show you a list of all newsletters and subscriptions, and let you unsubscribe with a swipe or click.
Bonus points: They also show you how much CO₂ you save by decluttering your inbox. Lazy + eco-friendly? Yes please.
3. Schedule Your Phone to Auto-Delete Old Media
Most smartphones let you auto-delete photos, screenshots, or downloaded files after a set period. In iOS, enable Optimize iPhone Storage; on Android, use Files by Google to clean junk files in seconds.
Pair this habit with the mindset from the top 10 lazy but genius ways to organize your digital life, and you’ve got a phone that runs smoother without you lifting a finger.
4. Use “Stack” Apps to Organize Notes and Docs Automatically
Apps like Evernote, Notion, or OneNote allow auto-tagging, sorting, and folder rules.
Lazy Genius Tip: Set up templates or automations so that every new note is filed where it belongs — without you doing it manually.
5. Let Your Browser Clean Itself
Use browser extensions like:
OneTab: Closes all open tabs and saves them in a list
Tab Suspender: Auto-pauses inactive tabs
History AutoDelete: Keeps your browser history from becoming a hoarder's paradise
It’s a solid sidekick to the habits in the top 10 lazy but genius ways to organize your digital life post.
6. Set Recurring Reminders That Actually Work
The key word here is “recurring.” Instead of relying on memory, set monthly 10-minute digital cleanup reminders on your calendar. Automate the repeat, and you’ll never have to remember it again.
Use tools like:
Google Calendar (with reminders and checklists)
TickTick or Todoist (with smart recurring tasks)
Siri or Google Assistant (voice commands FTW)
7. Auto-Sort Downloads Using Folder Rules
Tools like Hazel (Mac) or File Juggler (Windows) can auto-organize your downloads folder based on file type, name, or date.
For example:
Move PDFs to Documents
Send images to Pictures
Trash zip files after 24 hours
This lazy automation turns chaos into calm without constant manual effort.
8. Delete Duplicate Files With a Click
Duplicate files = wasted space. Use tools like:
Gemini 2 (Mac)
CCleaner (Windows)
Duplicate Cleaner Free
These apps scan and clean up your hard drive or cloud storage with minimal interaction — perfect for lazy geniuses like us.
9. Use a Dashboard to See Everything at a Glance
Use Notion or Trello to build a minimalist dashboard of your digital world — to-dos, file links, notes, calendar, and tools all in one spot. Bonus: once it’s built, you just update it here and there.
Pair this with any technique from the top 10 lazy but genius ways to organize your digital life and you’ll become the CEO of calm.
10. Empty the Trash — Automatically
Set your system or cloud service to auto-empty the trash every 30 days. No emotional attachment needed.
Go to your system settings or storage settings (Google Drive, iCloud, etc.) and toggle on the auto-delete function.
Final Thoughts: It’s Not About Working Hard — It’s About Working Smart
Decluttering your digital life doesn't have to be a marathon. With these smart, nearly hands-off hacks, your devices can stay organized while you go do... well, anything else.
Think of this post as a deeper dive into the top 10 lazy but genius ways to organize your digital life — because the lazier the hack, the better the result.

1. Keep Your Software Updated
Regular software updates improve performance, security, and compatibility with new apps. Check for updates in Settings > Software Update to install the latest patches and improvements.
2. Use a Reliable Antivirus App
Refurbished smartphones may be more vulnerable to malware. Install a reputable antivirus app to detect and prevent potential threats. Some reliable options include Avast, Norton, and Bitdefender.
3. Optimize Battery Health
A well-maintained battery enhances the device's lifespan. Follow these practices:
Avoid overcharging or depleting the battery completely.
4. Clear Unnecessary Files and Cache
Over time, junk files and cache can slow down your device. Regularly clean your phone using built-in tools like Storage Cleaner or third-party apps such as CCleaner.
5. Protect the Hardware
To prevent physical damage:
Use a high-quality protective case and tempered glass screen protector.
6. Manage Storage Wisely
A cluttered phone can impact performance. Free up space by:
Deleting unused apps and duplicate files.
Moving photos and videos to cloud storage like Google Drive or iCloud.
7. Monitor App Permissions
Some apps request unnecessary permissions that can compromise security. Regularly review and manage app permissions via Settings > Privacy to protect your data.
8. Reset When Necessary
If your phone slows down significantly, a factory reset can restore performance. Before resetting:
9. Use a Strong Screen Lock
Fingerprint or Face ID authentication.
A strong PIN or password.
10. Extend the Life of Your Accessories
Your charger, earphones, and other accessories also require care:
Store them properly to prevent damage.
Avoid bending or stretching charging cables excessively.
Clean ports with a soft brush or compressed air

Chapter 8
HADLEE SPENT THE BETTER PART OF the afternoon making her way through each of the drawers in the tower and making them usable. Harrison watched her as she sifted through all of the junk that had been accumulated. Many keys and sunglasses were found; in fact, so many stray sunglasses were found that Hadlee had to find a box to put them in. By 7:00, she had rolled around and moved to the small kitchen area. Harrison had moved out onto the beach, leaving Hadlee in the tower with the other lifeguards, not that she minded. She happily organized and straightened things up in the tower with her headphones. Harrison couldn’t help but laugh at his sister; she was an actual character. Her room was cleaner than most hotel rooms, and it made him laugh when she insisted that the rest of the apartment be presentable all the time. He didn’t understand her reasoning, but hell, if he would argue with her. As he had explained to Glick and Reidy earlier in the day, an argument with the girl was pointless; she would win, and they would have wasted their breath attempting to refute her near-perfect reasoning. It was closer to 8:30 when Harrison had finished packing up the beach with Reidy, thanks to some people not heeding warnings about the lifeguards clocking out. Walking into the tower, they saw Hadlee sleeping in one of the desk chairs. A lifeguard sweatshirt had been draped over her, and her feet were in Jethro’s lap as he played on his phone.
“How long has she been out?” Harrison asked, placing a gentle hand on his sister’s head.
Jethro looked up from his phone and glanced at Hadlee.
“About half an hour. Look through that box, see if anything is yours.” Jethro said, pointing towards a box sitting on the now clean counter.
Harrison moved over to the box and looked inside. Everything from key chains to clothes was in the box. He noted dozens of sunglasses, three of which were his, water bottles, and more keys (probably Chappo’s). He grabbed the things that belonged to him and put them in his backpack. Harrison sat on the desk momentarily, not having the heart to wake Hadlee just yet. The sound of the backdoor opening was inevitably the thing that woke Hadlee. She jumped a bit, but Jethro gently knocked on her leg and calmed her again. She wiped the sleep from her eyes and looked around the tower. Hoppo walked up to the desk, turning his head as he went.
“Who cleaned?” He asked.
            Hadlee raised her hand.
“I did.” She said.
Hadlee reached for her water bottle and took a long drink.
“Really?” Hoppo asked, leaning against the counter.
“Yeah, I organized the drawers and cupboards too. I left all the stuff that fell under the personal item category in that box on the counter. You guys lose a lot of sunglasses.” Hadlee laughed.
Hoppo pushed himself off the counter with a furrowed brow and looked in the box. He chuckled a little bit.
“We do.” He said, trying to play it off, but Hadlee saw that he did pull a couple of items out.
“I was going to suggest that you guys get a corkboard and put labeled hooks on it for your keys. That way, they’re always in one place.” Hadlee said, taking another drink from her water bottle.
“Hmm,” Hoppo mumbled. “That’s not a bad idea. But Chappo has a bad habit of not getting his keys to where they should be in the first place.”
Hadlee bit the inside of her cheek as she thought.
“Have you seen those little squares you can attach to your keys? You can get an app to track your keys if you lose them. It’ll even give off a little sound if you tell it.” Hadlee said, looking up at Hoppo.
Hoppo looked at her and smiled.
“Next, you’re gonna tell me you brought cupcakes, right?” Hoppo joked.
“There are some in the fridge from earlier,” Hadlee said.
Hoppo laughed, but he looked at the fridge when he saw she wasn’t joking.
“Wait, seriously?” He asked and opened the fridge.
Sure enough, the cupcake box was, in fact, in the fridge.
“You cleaned the tower, brought cupcakes, found most if not all of our lost stuff,” Hoppo listed. “Anything else?”
“I took inventory of the medical supplies,” Hadlee said, handing the clipboard to Hoppo.
Hoppo flipped through the pages and then paused on the last page.
“What’s this?” He asked.
“The last page?” Hadlee asked.
“Yeah,” Hoppo replied.
“A list of supplies and food items you’re almost out of. I found the old lists and guidelines in one of the cupboards and just went off of them. I moved the handbook over there.” Hadlee said, pointing to the book on a shelf near the sink.
Hoppo looked at the shelf and then back to the clipboard. Harrison didn’t remember the last time he’d seen him so shocked. There’d been some silencing rescues over the years, but seeing Hoppo speechless over something good was almost unnerving.
“You good, Hop?” Reidy laughed.
            Hoppo nodded.
“I’m great,” he said, turning to Hadlee. Do you have a job?”
Hadlee opened her mouth and then closed it again.
“Uhm, n-no.” She stuttered.
“Do you want one?” Hoppo asked.
Again, Hadlee stared at Hoppo. Was he being serious? Was he offering her a job?
“Are you serious? Do you remember that I’m epileptic? There are a lot of things that I can’t do.” Hadlee pointed out.
            Hoppo shrugged.
“So, you don’t do rescues. You can still patrol the beach if you want. We’ll get you first aid certified so you can help out there, and you don’t need any certification to help with lost kids. And you’ve proved that you’re more than capable in other areas. Plus, what better place to be if something happens than someplace where people are trained to save lives.” Hoppo said.
Hadlee didn’t know what to say. Sure, it wasn’t a lifeguarding position, but she knew that would never happen. In her mind, this was the next best thing. She could be at the beach and help out the boys.
“So?” Harrison said, nudging her shoulder.
“What do you think?” Hoppo asked.
Hadlee looked back at Harrison, who nodded, and then at Jethro, who was smiling like an idiot.
“Yeah, I’m in,” Hadlee said, a smile spreading across her face.
~~~~~~~
            A couple of days later, Hadlee returned to the tower in a blue polo. Hoppo had found an extra blank one and sent it home with Harrison, so Hadlee would have a uniform for her first day. Harrison laughed as they walked together. Hadlee was practically skipping with excitement. She had woken up before him and made breakfast. It was 6:00 when they walked into the tower. The windows were already open, and Harrison could see Harries and Maxi setting up the signs and flags along the beach.
“Do you wanna make the coffee, Hads?” Harrison yawned.
            Harrison furrowed his brow when he didn’t hear an answer.
“Hadlee?” He asked.
            Harrison turned around, worried that she had fallen into a seizure, but when he didn’t see her in the tower at all, his gut twisted. He looked out the front windows and saw Hadlee down on the sand. Harrison chuckled to himself. He walked out of the side door and down the side steps. Hadlee had climbed onto the roof of one of the buggies by the time he descended the stairs. He walked over and leaned against the Rhino.
“What’cha up to, Hads?” He asked.
“You get to start almost every day with this view. I thought it would be cool to start my first the same way.” Hadlee said.
            Harrison looked out to the expansive ocean. The sun was coming up from behind the rocks, giving off minimal light and leaving most of the sky a dark blue.
“It’s beautiful,” Hadlee whispered.
            Harrison climbed up and sat next to her. He was proud of her. She had fought tooth and nail to sit next to him, which made him feel good knowing all her hard work paid off. She deserved so much for everything that she went through. Every small success was just another person that she was proving wrong. The more steps she took towards her ultimate goals, the more impressive they were. Harrison smiled and pulled her against his side, kissing her head softly.
            She was right, it was beautiful.
Managing Digital Overload
Post five - 01/242025
Setting up boundaries is one of the best strategies to deal with digital overload. Instead of constantly being connected, start by scheduling specific times to check social media, emails and etc. For managing screen time, if you have an iPhone follow the instructions in this link. Managing screen time can block certain things like websites and apps to help you limit time.
Our digital lives can get overcrowded, just like real-world areas. Organize your digital assets, remove unnecessary programs, and on occasion check and clear your email inbox. Unsubscribing from pointless notifications and newsletters can help greatly cut down on the distractions. Clean mail is a great way to declutter your inbox I use it almost every month to get rid of the junk mail out my inbox.
The secret to minimizing digital stress is finding a balance between technology use and self-care and mindfulness. Make time for offline hobbies, physical activity, and quality time with loved ones. As we covered in blog four, mindfulness practices like meditation may help you in creating better tech-related habits. Once again headspace is a great platform to use for meditation.
