THE SPACE BETWEEN (2021)

It says something – I’m not sure what – when a movie takes its title from an old Dave Matthews band song. (At least they didn’t call it “Ants Marching: The Movie.”) And yet, I guess it makes some sense. The Space Between is about the music industry in the Matthews’ heyday of the 1990s – it takes place in 1996, to be exact – during the last boom period in the music business before Napster and streaming and piracy sort of blew everything up.

Of course, the movie isn’t about Dave Matthews. It is about a fictitious musician named Micky Adams (Kelsey Grammer), who was a huge star for a brief time in the 1970s, before he disappeared (to a luxurious compound in Montecito) and became something of a recluse – with some mental issues and a definite drug habit. He periodically sends in unsellable “albums” that his longtime label must reject – his most recent is called Doors and is just 45 minutes of him opening and closing doors.

However, Micky is not the main character in The Space Between. That is Charlie Porter (Jackson White), a wannabe music exec who is currently toiling in the mail room at a big label. He is determined to make his way to the top, so he frequents the local clubs looking for talent.

He falls for a beautiful young singer named Corey (Paris Jackson), who seems to be incredibly open to sleeping with anyone who might advance her career. Every time she was on screen, I kept thinking two things – 1) I can’t believe that’s Michael Jackson’s daughter and 2) back in the 1990s, it was still pretty rare for people to have nose rings. However, she does a good job with a slightly underwritten character.

To get her attention, he pretends he is higher up the totem pole at his label than he is. Then, he stumbles into an opportunity which may get him promoted to A&R at the label. The catch is this. The sleazy head of the label (William Fichtner) has had it with Micky Adams – even though the guy helped build the label, at this point he is just a drag. Therefore, if Charlie can go up to see Micky and get him to sign a buy-out of his contract, he will get a much better job.

The problem is that Micky is infamously… well eccentric. The last few label reps who went to visit him never returned. He has a pet llama which he parades around his property. Even Micky’s pretty daughter Julia (Julia Goldani Telles) acknowledges he is out of his mind.

Micky doses Charlie’s drink right after they meet and the two end up running around his estate naked. (Don’t ask…) However, the world at large has so much love for his earlier work that most people give Micky a pass for his strangeness.

Strangely, every time one of “Micky’s” songs is played in the film, there is an MTV-type chyron giving the name of the fictional song, artist, album, and record label. (It even uses the same font style as MTV did.) However, these songs are never shown as music videos, they are just songs people are listening to on a CD, on record, or even performed live in a little club, so I’m not sure where those little chyrons are supposed to be coming from.

The songs are rather good – the music was written by Rivers Cuomo of Weezer and is reminiscent of James Taylor or early Tom Waits before his voice was completely ravaged – though none are quite as great as the script keeps trying to convince us they are. Kelsey Grammer’s vocals are not bad at all, although they are a little gruff. (As is his speaking voice in this particular role.)

Through spending time together, Micky regains his desire to create art, while Charlie realizes that the music business is not just about business.

The Space Between seems to be a little unsure of whether to play all of this for comedy or a drama. This also confuses the viewers, who can’t decide whether to take Micky’s oddness as a source of humor, or as a source of pathos.

Therefore, it all comes down somewhere in the middle. (No, I’m not acting like the movie and consciously referencing another 1990s song by Jimmy Eat World.) It’s not bad, but it’s not great either. It’s honestly a bit hard to believe, and Micky seems a bit more like a caricature than a character. The movie finds itself lost somewhere in the space between good and bad.

The White Ribbon is a black-and-white German-language drama film written and directed by Michael Haneke. The film darkly depicts society and family in a northern German village just before World War I and, according to Haneke, “is about the roots of evil. Whether it’s religious or political terrorism, it’s the same thing.”

The film premiered at the 62nd Cannes Film Festival in May 2009 where it won the Palme d’Or, followed by positive reviews and several other major awards, including the 2010 Golden Globe Award for Best Foreign Language Film.

The memories of an unnamed elderly tailor form a parable from the distant year he worked as a village schoolteacher and met his fiancée Eva, a nanny. The setting is the fictitious Protestant village of Eichwald, Northern Germany, from July 1913 to 9 August 1914, where the local pastor, the doctor and the baron rule the roost over the area’s women, children and peasant farmers.

The puritanical pastor leads confirmation classes and gives his pubescent children a guilty conscience over apparently small transgressions. He has them wear white ribbons as a reminder of the innocence and purity from which they have strayed. When under interrogation, his son confesses to ‘impure’ touching; the pastor has the boy’s hands tied to his bed frame each night. The doctor, a widower, treats the village children kindly but humiliates his housekeeper and also sexually abuses his teenage daughter…

Thomas Hermanns hat uns die 90er Jahre zurückgebracht. Dabei hätte ich damals nicht einmal unter Folter zugegeben Boybands zu mögen! Nie im Leben! Das war so ziemlich das Uncoolste, was man sich damals vorstellen konnte. Nein, meine Freunde und ich, wir waren Grunge. Wir hörten Nirvana, Pearl Jam und Soundgarden und sahen immer aus, als hätte man uns direkt aus einer Mülltonne gezogen. Gelackte, gecastete Boybands? Niemals! Aber trotzdem, trotzdem, die Songs haben sich in alle Gehirnwindungen hineingewunden und wenn heutzutage auf einer Party ein bekannter Song von einer der Schönling-Bands von damals ertönt, dann kann plötzlich jeder mitsingen und rhythmisch mit den Hüften wackeln!

Denn, das muss das Rockerherz zugeben, es waren nun einmal überaus eingängige und mitsingbare Lieder, die die Jungs da trällerten. Und genau diesen unsterblichen Popsongs, denen huldigt Comedian, Moderator und Regisseur Hermanns nun mit einem Musical. Und was für ein Musical das ist! Das Theater am Potsdamer Platz kochte, das kann ich euch sagen. Es gab Kreischkonzerte wie zu NKOTBs besten Zeiten! Moderator Ole Lehmann, ein Fanboy aus tiefstem Herzen, führt durch den Abend und stellt uns die Jungs vor, die, ganz genau wie es sich für jede Boyband jemals gehörte, nach einem bestimmten Schema ausgesucht wurden: Da gibt es den Sonnyboy (Josh Randall), den, den die Mädchen alle süß finden und den auch Mama und Oma mögen, sieht er doch aus wie der perfekte Schwiegersohn. Und dann gibt es Fitboy Rik (Christopher Haul), der superfitte, gestählte Sportlertyp, für all die Fans, denen der Sonnyboy zu lieb ist. Und der 3. Boygrouptyp ist dann der zucker-zucker-zuckersüße, der rehäugige, der sanft-niedliche, der Nick Carter Typ: Sweetheart Sascha (Robbie Culley). Um all das Süße aufzuwiegen gibt es dann noch den Bad Boy, den Coolen, den Harten, den Rocker unter den lieben Jungs: Lucian (David Lei Brandt). Boyband Typ Nummer 5 ist einfach der Andere. Der eine andere Typ in der Gruppe an den sich niemand so richtig erinnern kann. Der einfach dabei ist, aber nicht wirklich eine eigene Biografie hat. Und nicht einmal einen Namen. Nummer Fünf eben. (Hector Mitchell-Turner).

Gemeinsam performt die neuerschaffene Boyband dann mitreißend die beliebtesten Songs der bekanntesten und erfolgreichsten Boybands aller Zeiten: Über die New Kids on the Block, East 17, Take That, die Backstreet Boys und Boyzone bis hin zu One Direction ist für jeden etwas dabei! Und auch alle anderen Besonderheiten, die die Boybands zu dem machten, was sie waren, gibt es natürlich live auf der Bühne: die Skandale, Skandälchen und Hahnenkämpfe in der Gruppe, die Videodrehs im strömenden Regen, die bis ins Detail choreographierten schweißtreibenden Dancemoves (Marvin A. Smith). Die fünf begabten Jungs geben wirklich alles und das Publikum geht mit Begeisterung mit. Man merkt, einige Mädels im Publikum haben das Kreischen und Ohnmächtigwerden, die ekstatischen Weinkrämpfe und die wasserglänzenden Männeröberkörper sehr vermisst. Die Songs werden mit Enthusiasmus gefeiert, es wird gejubelt und getanzt. Die fünf Sänger sind aber auch sowohl ein Augen- als auch ein Ohrenschmaus! Und Ole Lehmann macht mit seiner locker-anzüglichen Moderation ein rundes Ding aus dem Abend. Ob Grunger, Rocker oder bekennender Boyband-Fan, dieser Abend wird euch gefallen! Verpasst nicht diesen Ausflug in die Welt der gecasteten Erfolgsgaranten mit Ohrwurmgarantie! Dieses Musical ist eine fröhliche Verbeugung, eine lächelnde Hommage und ein gutgebautes Denkmal.
