Title: The Night When No One Had Sex
Author: Kalena Miller
Genre: YA Fiction | Comedy | Romance | Friendship | LGBTQ+
Content Warnings: Sexual Content
Overall Rating: 9.8/10
Personal Opinion: This is a book about horny teenagers trying to get it on with their prom dates and everything goes wrong to prevent them from doing such. It is comedy-centric and I find it hilarious. The antics these kids get into are just absolutely wild. But especially for Julia and Kevin. They were my favorite couple along with Alex and Leah. And not just because they included Asian men. But because they were wholesome and hilarious.
Do I Own This Book? No.
Spoilers Below For My Likes & Dislikes:
Likes:
- This is a comedy-centric book and I will grade it as such. It is hilarious. Chaotic but hilarious. With Julia being the center of most of the chaos. Her fear of cats, the fantasy roleplay, the trapped in the closet, the all-caps texting, she really brought the funny in this book. She is easily my favorite and it’s not just because her boyfriend is Kevin, the fat Chinese guy who is just so sweet on her. Finally, decent Kevin representation!
- Okay, let’s break down some of the comedic points. The cat. First of all, Bulldog is a horrible yet hilarious name for a cat. Just the mere fact that this cat existed in the vicinity of these horny teenagers is funny. But what makes it funnier is that he ended up on the roof with Madison and Jake. He kept on interrupting couples and just popping up in random places, it was hilarious.
- The excessive amounts of lube on the bed, oh my god. I can absolutely imagine the first time jitters involved with sex and the fact that Julia just emptied an entire bottle of lube onto her hand kills me. And especially because Kevin just had to point it out. Why does it make it funnier? I don’t know but it does.
- The fantasy roleplay killed me. Not only because Kevin had no idea what a fantasy elf was and based his idea of it on Santa’s elves but the fact that he thought it would be sexy is hilarious. But the best part was when Julia got into the role playing while trapped in the closet and Kevin had to yell out their safe word to get her to listen to him. That just ended me. Can you imagine trying to be sexy and then your boyfriend just screams “PIGEONS!”
- The visual of Zoe angrily and aggressively kneading dough while her girlfriend obliviously celebrates her getting into Yale is also hilarious. A little sad because how can Morgan not see how upset Zoe is? But mostly funny because they’re supposed to be fucking and instead, Zoe decided to make scones at ass o’clock because her uncle has a room that’s just a shrine to Yale.
- Speaking of the bedrooms, the other bedroom with the animal heads is also hilarious. The fact that Jake named them and Madison felt a kinship with one of them is so funny.
- Alex’s scenes were honestly much more endearing than funny. He was going through a lot with his grandmother in the hospital for surgery. But he had Leah by his side the entire time and their Romeo & Juliet, star crossed lovers thing had me hooked. I am a sucker for that trope. The fact that they were the only couple to actually have sex is hilarious to me too. Like I was truly laughing my ass off when he showed up to the house and Julia was like, “Well, at least the sex pact wasn’t a total failure.”
- I think the best part of this book is that everyone is just good people. Julia set up Alex and Leah. Leah stayed at the hospital to support Alex. Alex cares for the elderly and their park and the GEESE. Kevin didn’t mind not having sex with Julia immediately and read a whole book series just to make her happy. Morgan selflessly wanted her girlfriend to get into Yale and didn’t try to hold her back at all. And Jake! Sweet Jake. Now he was a surprise. He was actually really sweet to Madison and he accepted her breaking up with him with grace and humility. I respect that so much. He may be a dumb jock but he’s a good heart.
Dislikes:
- Uncle Ross didn’t show up much and he honestly wasn’t that scummy but his obsession with Yale does make me feel gross. It doesn’t help that my association with men who graduated from Yale is in the toilet currently. So I just did not like the man whatsoever. But he did lend his cabin to his niece and her friends and that was pretty cool of him, I guess.
- The actual reason why this book doesn’t get a perfect rating is Zoe. She’s supposed to be the smartest person in their grade and the most rational person in their friend group. But instead of talking things out with everyone about her not wanting to go to Yale, she let it silently eat away at her until she was basically crying and yelling at others. That was especially not fair to Morgan. Especially because Zoe acknowledged that she should’ve told Morgan and instead of telling her, she continued to keep it inside. That’s so frustrating. When characters know the solutions to their problems and just don’t act on them.

Book 22 of 2023: As You Walk On By by Julian Winters
I loved Right Where I Left You, and this was just as delightful. Theo's best friend, Jay, dares him to prompose to his crush. It goes badly, he goes to hide in an upstairs room at this party, he meets an assortment of other people who are also hiding from the party, they bond, there's a love story, it's just so lovely. Theo makes big mistakes and has a big heart--he's a great protagonist. Definitely check this one out if you're a YA reader, especially if you're looking for a sweet romcom with queer BIPOC characters.
What to read next: The Night When No One Had Sex, by Kalena Miller, for another sweet YA that mostly takes place in one epic night.

Purchase from Bookshop
It's the night of senior prom, and eighteen-year-old Julia has made a pact with her friends. (Yes, that kind of pact.) They have secured a secluded cabin in the woods, one night without parental supervision, and plenty of condoms. But as soon as they leave the dance, the pact begins to unravel. Alex's grandmother is undergoing emergency surgery, and he and his date rush to the hospital. Zoe's trying to figure out how she feels about getting off the waitlist at Yale--and how to tell her girlfriend. Madison's chronic illness flares, holding her back once again from being a normal teenager. And Julia's fantasy-themed role play gets her locked in a closet. Alternating between each character's perspective and their ridiculous group chat, The Night When No One Had Sex finds a group of friends navigating the tenuous transition into adulthood and embracing the uncertainty of life after high school.

Perspective in Kalena Miller’s YA Novel The Night When No One Had Sex Kalena Miller’s novel The Night When No One Had Sex is a fun example of the way that different perspectives can shape and strengthen the experience of a young adult (YA) novel. As her debut novel, The Night When No One Had Sex feels especially ambitious as it tells on the stories eight high school students, who make a sex pact on their prom night, all told from five alternating perspectives. When I first started reading, I immediately got nervous by the sheer amount of character names and wondered if this was one of those novels where I was going to have to take notes just to figure out who was speaking. However, Miller utilizes the different chapter headings and character voice to establish four distinct first-person perspectives. I also found her use of one objective point-of-view of their nights group chat to be helpful in tying together the web of perspective together. Miller demonstrates a strength of craft in making a cohesive story about something as hilarious and awkward as teenage friends making a sex pact on prom night without losing the urgency and weight of each character’s unique experience.  Though the novel contains 12 named characters that appear throughout the story, Miller makes the decision to use four first-person perspectives are shared between Zoe, Alex, Madison, and Julia. This works to the novels favor as it allows for the smallest possible group of narrators while still including each of the prom night couples: Zoe and her girlfriend Morgan, Alex and his blind date Leah, Madison and her casual boyfriend Jake, and Julia and her long-time boyfriend Kevin. Each of the narrators provide the audience with their unique and funny perspectives on the attempts at sex that transpire at Zoe’s Uncle’s extravagant house in the woods. However, I believe the most effective aspect of this choice is how it allows each of the narrator’s problems—beyond the sex pact—to impact their thoughts and decisions as they navigate the social chaos that is their prom afterparty. This decision allows the novel to be both about a sex pact, while also confronting the issues that teenagers are facing like acceptance into college, family emergencies, chronic illness, and long-distance relationships.  However, I think one of Miller’s most creative perspective choices is the inclusion of chapters that use the friends’ group chat. While I’ve seen the use of text message and group messages in YA novels before, Miller uses the chat to connect the different story threads, as well as allowing for the voices of other characters who don’t have their own chapters in the book. The functionality of this unique perspective works as a kind of connective tissue between the different perspectives that make up the heart of the book. While I think the sexual nature of the book may capture readers attention, it will be the way Miller uses her characters unique voices and perspectives that will keep them reading. Rather than using the sheer number of perspectives for some sort of dramatic effect, Miller uses her characters’ voice to dig deep into the network of tensions that impact each teenager in the United States today. The specificity of each narrator and the problems they face in their daily lives allows for the background of this prom night sex pact to put its characters first, still exploring the weird world of young sexual experience while remembering the complexity of what it’s like to be a teenager.

Book 108 of 2021: The Night When No One Had Sex by Kalena Miller
A sweet and very funny novel about a group of friends who make a pact to all have sex with their partners on prom night. Inconvenient feelings about college, overly elaborate role-play scenarios, and other complications arise, interfering with everyone's plans. Fast-paced, funny, and heartfelt--YA fans should definitely check this one out.
What to read next: Jay's Gay Agenda, by Jason June, for another sweet, funny, and sex-positive YA that will put a smile on your face.

i need to see more of them being besties cause miller was always bell's right hand man. he mostly had murphy by his side to keep him out of trouble but miller was the one he left in charge.
YES! Need to see more of that dynamic.

Prough receives second NJCAA All-America honor
Source: https://www.neoshodailynews.com/sports/20190613/prough-receives-second-njcaa-all-america-honor
NCAA Division I Central Arkansas transfer Maddy Prough definitely made a significant impact on the Crowder softball program during her one and only season pitching for the Lady Roughriders.
She earned Region 16 player of the year and her 22 victories contributed to a 54-win season and 54-5 overall record.
Prough recently received All-America second team honors from the National Fastpitch Coaches Association. On Tuesday, she received a second All-America second team nod, this one from the NJCAA Division I Softball Committee.
Prough led the nation with a 0.99 ERA and she allowed 20 earned runs over 141 innings pitched. She finished with a 22-1 record and 149 strikeouts and 29 walks.
Prough won her first 22 decisions and her only loss came in the first game of the District J tournament against Indian Hills (Iowa). Prough lost a 4-1 decision and she gave up the same amount of hits — three — as victorious pitcher Alexis Groet.
Groet joined Prough on the second team and her most notable statistic was leading the nation with 301 strikeouts.
Former Crowder player and Chipola outfielder Elia Infante also made second team — she hit .460 (75 for 163) with 56 runs scored, 26 doubles, three triples, six home runs, 63 RBI, 29 walks and 19 strikeouts, and 24 stolen bases in 29 attempts for the national champions.
Prough became the first Crowder player to be selected All-America by the NJCAA-I Softball Committee since 2017 when Oakley Sisemore (second team) and Maddie Massanelli and Paige Mendoza (third team) earned honors for a 55-win Crowder team.
