Two words, 𝓹𝓪𝓰-𝓱𝓲𝓷𝓰𝓪 and 𝓹𝓪𝓱𝓲𝓷𝓰𝓪. Breathe and rest.

For the past few months I could feel that my mental health status is declining. I could not acknowledge it at first for the reason that I think that it is a sign of a weakness and I cannot show weakness since I am a Mom, I am the first-born child, I am the eldest sister, I am a social worker, and I am a mental health professional worker. I cannot give up. I have a lot of responsibilities in ny shoulder and I have to fight.

But sometimes, the more I hold on, the more I push myself into believing that everything is fine it becomes worst up to the point where I became anxious and stressed over the things that I cannot control anymore.

I get tired. I cannot breathe. It feels like even the air that I am breathing is not for me anymore. I feel like giving up. But God is really good. I prayed and he send people to help me.

I always tell my parents my plans as an assurance that their daughter still has a plan on her life and they would always make me feel their support and love. They always tell me that I should wait and take my time. Really, it is just me who is putting pressure to myself since I saw people at my age or younger than me achieved greater things that I was so blinded by it that I cannot see how far I have reached. Thank you Mommy and Dadi Mey for always making me feel loved, secured and heard.

Myy brother, Karl, he may not give me advices but he is still there to listen and to comfort me. Also, to confront me when I did something off.

I felt suffocated until I got the urge to tell Ate JenyBeth how I really feel. People see me as a happy and jolly person but my thoughts are eating me. Thank you Ate Jen for saving me while I am drowning in my thoughts thinking I am not good enough and I am not worthy since I am always comparing myself to other people’s achievements. Thank you for reminding me that we are all uniquely good and that I am me.

I wanted to rest.

And God gave that to me.

Kim, Ate Ran and I really has a plan to go on a trip to breathe and to take a rest.

But the Lord is good. He knows what I need. He knows what to do. He has plans for me.

A week before our trip, my friends from work asked me to go with them at La Union. Nature healing really works for me. I can breathe and at the same time, I can rest. Even if it is just a day, I coul feel the serenity and the peaceful life I can have and I can choose.

The week after, our trip was pushed through despite of a lot of obstacles due to work schedule. Thank you everyone in the trip, our organizer and coordinator Macoy Adventure, the three couples who are our new friends now, Ate Julie and Kuya Noel, Kay and Ron, and Ate Sienna and Kuya Wil. Thank you so much to my friends who got really the best chemistry of each other, my high scool tropa John Robert, my college best friend Kim Aguilon, my college friend Allen Dela Cruz and my workmate Ate Ran Odango (sorry hindi ko kayo mahanap sa tags huhu).

My two weekends has been fun. A lot of realizations come in and I took my time to realize and acknowledge that: 1) This is just a phase, this will pass through. 2) Acknowledging that something is wrong with me is not a weakness, but a strong will to live and change myself for the better. 3) I have a support system. I am not alone not like what I used to believe. There are people who loves me, supports me and cares for me. ❤️

With all that, I am not ready again to face adulthood together with my role as a mother. I am now ready to breathe again and re-focus my mind towards my goals without looking or comparing myself to others. 💗 Self-love must really comes first in that I can also take care and love the people who is always there for me.

Within the mossy forests of Balatoc in the Kalinga province of the Philippines is an enthralling display of yellow soil and rocks known as the Sulfur Hills of Pasil. It serves as a testament to the existence of a once-majestic volcano and it continues to feature the beauty of what was left behind.

The Sulfur Hills are located at the lower slopes of Mount Binulunan (also known as Ambalatungan). The mountain is identified by the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology as an inactive volcano with possible. but unverified, eruptions in the 1950s and 1980s. This further explains the emergence of the Sulfur Hills, due to the mountain’s geothermal features stemming from its volcanic nature.

The hills have volcanic gases that seep out of the ground through fumarolic vents covered in sulfur. These vents also produce loud noises, accompanied by groundwater steam and the release of gases composed of hydrogen sulfide, carbon dioxide, and sulfur dioxide. The hills also have small and shallow caves in large yellow rock formations which makes it feel even more surreal. Stalactite-like deposits can also be found hanging from multiple rock walls.

Due to the dangerous composition of gases, the local government units implement strict safety measures for both community members and visitors. One of which is where infants, pregnant women, and anyone with heart or respiratory problems are not allowed anywhere near the steam.

The hills’ bright yellow formations hidden within lush pine tree forests, diverse waterfalls, and mountain boulders make the area a surreal paradise. There are also hot springs in the outer areas of the hills, at a distance that is safe enough for a relaxing soak. 

Excursions to the hills are grueling but visitors continue to arrive for another taste of adventure, to experience a different kind of utopia, and to satisfy their curiosity.

Vogue Philippines has revealed Apo Whang-Od as the cover star of its April issue, a move that makes the 106-year-old tattoo artist from the Philippines the oldest person ever to appear on the front of Vogue.

Whang-Od — also known as Maria Oggay — has been perfecting the art of hand-tapping tattoos since she was a teen, learning under her father's instruction.

Residing in the mountain village of Buscalan, about 15 hours north of Manila, in Kalinga province, she is considered the country's oldest mambabatok — or traditional Kalinga tattooist.

Once, the hand-tapped tattoos that Whang-Od creates using just a bamboo stick, a thorn from a pomelo tree, water and coal, were earned by indigenous Butbut warriors.

Now, international visitors seeking her signature geometric designs make up much of her clientele.

"Heralded as the last mambabatok of her generation, she has imprinted the symbols of the Kalinga tribe—signifying strength, bravery, and beauty—on the skin of thousands of people who have made the pilgrimage to Buscalan," Vogue Philippines said in a post on social media.

Literature is one of a kind. It opens opportunities for us readers to take a break from reality to places we've never been or will never be. Just by reading with our wide imagination, we will not only be entertained, but we will also gain knowledge, lessons about life and understanding of the world including the people around us. However, have you heard of the richness of Ilocano literature? 

"Iloko" is the language while "Ilocano" refers to the people who speak the Iloko language and lives in the provinces of Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur, La Union, and certain sections of Pangasinan, Tarlac, Cagayan, Isabela, Nueva Vizcaya, and Nueva Ecija. There are also some Ilocanos in Apayao, Kalinga, Ifugao, and Mountain Province. The entire region is sometimes called “Ilocandia” or the “Ilocos Region”.

The term Ilocano originates from i-, "from", and looc, "cove or bay", thus "people of the bay." A families and clans arrived by viray or bilog, meaning "boat". Ilocanos also refer to themselves as Samtoy, a contraction from the Ilokano phrase sao mi ditoy, "our language here".

One of the reasons why Ilocanos are known is because of the richness of their literature. In fact, it is believed by scholars to be the richest and most highly developed in the Philippines. 

Ilocano literature are the literary works written in foreign or Philippine languages by the Ilocano ancestry writers. It is one of the several regional Philippine literatures. Ilocano literature, next to Tagalog and Philippine Literature in English, is one of the most active tributaries to the general Philippine literature.

Folk songs, riddles, proverbs, lamentations called dung-aw, and epic tales in written or oral form made up the pre-colonial Iloco literature. The dallot, a long, spontaneous poetry given in a sing-song style, was a form of expression used by ancient Ilokano poets along with folk and battle songs.

During the Spanish regime, Iloko poetry was generally patterned after Spanish models. In fact, the earliest known written Iloko poems were the romances translated from Spanish by Francisco Lopez, an Augustinian friar who, in 1621, published his own Iloko translation of the Doctrina Cristiana by Cardinal Bellarmine, the first book to be printed in Iloko.

During the 18th century, the missionaries used both religious and secular literatures among other means to advance in order to further their goal of converting the Ilocanos to Christianity.

The comedia, otherwise known as the moro-moro, and the zarzuela were presented for the first time in the Ilocos in the 19th century. The comedia, a highly picturesque presentation of the wars between Christians and Muslims, and the zarzuela, an equally picturesque depiction of what is at once melodrama, comic-opera, and the skit interminably preoccupied with the eternal theme of boy-meets-girl-who-always-live-happily-ever-after-against-seemingly-impossible-odds are still as popular today as they were when first staged in the Ilocos.

Today, there is a sizable body of Ilocano literature, including newspapers and periodicals like the Bannawag.

What's more interesting about Ilocano literature is that there is one piece that survived in the Spanish colonial period and still shines up to now!

Who wouldn't know the oldest, yet greatest Ilocano epic, Biag ni Lam-ang?

For many generations, Biag ni Lam-ang (The Life of Lam-ang) has been passed down orally, then it was later written down and documented during the Spanish Colonial era in the Philippines. It is notable for incorporating Roman Catholic elements into the piece, such as references by the characters of Lam-ang and Ines Kannoyan to marriage as a sacrament. 

It tells the story of Lam-ang's life from avenging his father's murder, to being eaten by the water monster Berkakan, to being reborn and living happily ever after with his love, Ines Kannoyan. Furthermore, the epic poem showed some of the customs, culture, tradition and belief of the Ilocano people of the Philippines, including how they value their family. The story also presented some of the qualities of the people of the Ilocos region such as adventurous, hardy, and brave, loyal as strongly portrayed by Lam-ang.
