𝕋𝕙𝕖 𝕋𝕖𝕒𝕣𝕤 𝕠𝕗 𝕋𝕚𝕞𝕖, (KNY fanfic) chapter 2 and 3 artworks.
In these illustrations, we witness the initial meeting between young Rengoku Kyojuro and Nagase Kanoko, the heiress of a lineage of independent demon huntresses practicing Time Breathing. Kanoko was training alone in a meadow on the outskirts of Ebara, the town near Kyojuro's home village, Komazawa. Enthralled by her mastery of this unique Breathing style, the eldest Rengoku was quick to express his (loud and enthousiastic) desire to become her sparring partner.
They trained together for a brief period before Kyojuro embarked on the Final Selection trial. In the second illustration, Kyojuro proudly showcases his Kisatsutai gakuran to Kanoko shortly after returning from the Final Selection.
Creating manga-style art is always enjoyable and relaxing for me. I hold deep admiration for Gotouge and Ufotable artists. I hope to pay proper respect to their work through the forthcoming series of fan arts I'll make for the whole fic :3
If you're interested in checking out "The Tears of Time", you can find it here. (Also available on AO3 and Quotev)
You can already have a peek of the next illustration on my Ko-fi (which will unlock you one very steamy chapter too ;D) or my Patreon!
@altarusse @moonchhu guess you might be interested <3

Shizuku: Revised the customer service at her family's cafe to make it more comfortable. As a result, apparently there has been a strange increase in customers who come there to see her.

Mito: Became one of the mediators connecting the east and west. Her natural attitude and innocence have made her a key player in connecting everyone's hearts.
Himika: Earned a reward from helping the CEO of a certain food manufacturer, but turned it down. She persists in honourable poverty, but apparently the CEO intends to hire her someday.
Livia: She is still travelling the land for the sake of the universe. Lately she has also made plans to create a food truck for when she is low on income.
Sudachi: After returning to her hometown and facing her past, she has gradually started regaining the ability to speak. She has talked to Livia and Mikage over the phone.
Yozuru: In the process of mastering kind interactions, she has won popularity as if she were a host, but apparently she wants to become a child carer and be kind to children.
Lavi: Is managing Earth's Cradle with her mother. She has entered a university in Yukuni and sought teaching from a scholar with connections to Tasuke.
Nayuta: Entered a university her father does not teach at, in order to research magical girls in her own way. Even now, Lavi regularly comes to her boarding house to clean it.
Mikage: Upon receiving word that Ashita-ya was closing down, she forcefully became the second-generation shopkeeper. She is learning from the old lady's knowledge and trying to liven it up.
Himena: Started a nail salon, which has been smooth sailing. She plans to use the power she gains in the business world to make people acknowledge magical girl supremacy and her relationship with Hiko-kun.
Alexandra: Still loves singing and playing the harp, and holds small concerts. While performing at a certain shop, she was reunited with the teacher she had feelings for.
Shigure: Participated in a tournament using her homemade robot and won first place. She became the face of Koushou Academy, but fumbled too much in her speech and ended up crying.
Hagumu: A senior in the drama club asked her to make cosplay outfits, which became popular. Huge amounts of orders are pouring in, making every day hectic.
San: While studying for her civil service exams, she found documents about the Fire Festival that were confirmed to be historical records. There are signs that the Fire Festival may resume.
Miyuri: Won a national inline skating tournament without getting nervous. However, the plane ride to the world tournament was so scary that she has no memory of the journey.
Mitsune: Her legs recovered thanks to the power of the Uwasa. Apparently she is now supporting Kagome, making use of her own experience in social media.
Shizuka: Is considering the Tokime Clan's future with her companions while learning the Tokime Isshin-ryuu from her mother. Apparently she actually wants to go to a fashion school.
Chiharu: Her drama knowledge and analysis became famous and she ended up writing columns for a magazine. She is becoming a mystery drama critic.
Sunao: She has collected a great number of qualifications for helping people, such as caregiver qualifications. Apparently she wants to create a facility herself in the future.
Asahi: Lives in the mountains, away from other people. She has opened a wild game restaurant near the Tokime village that only operates on days when she has secured ingredients.
Chika: Has opened a shelter while continuing to work as a nature guide. It serves as an oasis for the hearts of people caught up in the tempests of the city.
Ryouko: Is making a pilgrimage around the country to mourn for magical girls in various locations. Many curious people come up to talk to her.
Yuna: Announced the disbanding of Promised Blood. She is trying to become a parliamentary secretary to prevent the existence of magical girls being misused.
Juri: Became a professional boxer after graduating, but couldn't follow the rules when she got heated up, so quickly switched to being a trainer.
Ao: Became a famous DoTuber overnight through her gaming streams. She faced backlash over a verbal slip, but her popularity is skyrocketing again after she joined a pro gamer team.
Hikaru: Studying hard to get into university so she can help Yuna. For some reason, she apparently has a feeling that she would live a slack life if she didn't make it into university.
Ranka: She is standing out as a pro gamer, and added the down-and-out Ao to her team, propping up her popularity.
Urara: Joined a circus troupe and is travelling the nation, continuing to perform. She has asked Kurara to co-star with her again, but has already been declined ten times.
Alina: Has stopped making art based on destruction and begun making art based on the radiance of life resisting suffering. Her activities provide hope to people in rough situations.
Karin: Spends every day continuing to draw art so that she can chase after Alina as an assistant. However, she can't resist new volumes of Magical Kirin.
Kanagi: Was given an award from Kamihama City for her efforts in creating a future without discrimination between east and west. She has reported the latest situation to Ryou and Ikumi's graves.
Mitama: She resumed her Coordinator business, but her affection for magical girls exploded, leading to a string of odd injuries. Momoko has ended up becoming her chaperon.
Tsukuyo: Upon her graduation, she announced to her family that she would leave home and "live with Tsukasa". It caused quite an uproar, but there are signs she will be given permission.
Tsukasa: The bamboo workshop was shaken by the announcement that she would live with Tsukuyo. However, the workers gave her father a push, and he is now shifting the Akatsuki family.
Mifuyu: Even after entering the university pharmaceutical department, she is still studying intensely to escape from her family. She reflects on her appreciation for Touka and Nemu every day.
Momoko: The position of Coordinator's chaperon was pushed onto her, and she fell victim to Mitama's appreciative cooking. Rena and Kaede's growth makes her feel a little lonely.
Kaede: Borrowed some farmland from the city and grew some vegetables, which were a big hit. Seeing her business spirit as she sells them without fear, her parents can feel how their daughter has grown.
Rena: Has made more friends at school, possibly as a result of her personality mellowing out slightly. Even now, she stays in contact with Ranka and plays with her.
Yachiyo: As her non-modelling work increases, she continues to wait for Iroha's return while making Mikazuki Villa a place for magical girls to relax.
Tsuruno: She has handed over her role as drawcard for Banbanzai and has started to inherit her father's flavour. Also, apparently there is a chance her older sister will return and help out again.
Felicia: Inherited the role of drawcard for Banbanzai from Tsuruno. However, she swipes food while setting the tables, so customers complain that the portions are smaller than before.
Sana: Received a publishing offer for her picture books, but since she is invisible, she is getting support from the people around her as she begins her writing career.
Iroha/Ui: They continue to gather and file records along with the impurities from all over the world. They manage them in the Magia Record so that they can someday be conveyed to people.
Touka/Nemu: While compiling the gathered records of magical girls, they are also searching for a way to save magical girls using Uwasa.
Sakurako: The Uwasa itself remains in Kamihama, but she now lives in the same place as Iroha and her companions, assisting them.
Kagome: While making plans to publish her notes, she is currently considering her future course, in order to fulfil her dream of interviewing magical girls around the world.

REVIEW | "Usotoki Rhetoric" - Vol. 1 | B3 - Boston Bastard Brigade
Tumblr media
A great detective knows when someone is lying. It can be a tick, a way one looks, or even a kind of body language that acts as a tell. For young Urabe Kanoko, her means of finding lies is a lot more simpler: she can just tell from what people are saying. In Ritsu Miyako’s Usotoki Rhetoric, new kinds of mysteries (well, new for 2012!) unravel in a town from the year the Showa era began.
Because of Kanoko’s ability, she was labeled a creep by her hometown. To no longer be a burden on her family, Kanoko leaves and finds herself in the city of Tsukumoya. She collapses from hunger, only to find herself under the care of Detective Iwai Soma. However, Iwai’s got his own sorts of problems: he’s broke, untrustworthy, and has no clients.
Tumblr media
But when a child goes missing, Kanoko and Iwai set off to find him. It’s when Kanoko points out the culprit when Iwai finds a new partner in his business. With Kanoko’s power to hear lies and Iwai’s means of bluffing, the two become a detective powerhouse in a matter of days. Well…they wish that, but clientele is hard to come by!
There’s a great mixture of comedy and mystery in Usotoki Rhetoric. When in laid-back mode, Kanoko and Iwai do their best to get through the daily grind with slice of humor and silliness. Iwai wants to find the easiest way to make a buck, whereas Kanoko’s powers make it hard for her to let the detective act dishonorably. But when the two are in work mode, that’s when their strengths are at full blast!

Bought out the shop! Pretty early on for me. Now I can chill out and farm CC. :)
Tumblr media
Rena’s magia is increased. I didn’t know she’d have accele mp up for 3 turns after-- that’s neat-o. I wish her magia was multiple-target instead of single.
Tumblr media
Got this nerd’s magia increased. Now I’ll need a mil CC for her /sobs
Tumblr media
And hers... I probably should have saved the CC. But whatever! I kind of want to get all the girls to magia level 3. And then to magia level 4. You know; save the hardest for last.
Other
Being a little quiet over here lately-- kind of depressed for no reason?? I promise to respond to stuff soon. Thanks for all y’all’s patience in advance!

I liked how Deaimon episode 5 focused mainly on the women of the shop, including the grandma who is truly just living her best life traveling all the time lol. It was fun to see Kanoko, Mitsuru and Itsuka hanging out having a good time on the town. I also liked the spiritual aspect of Nagomu dreaming about his grandpa and how that tied in to Obon. Now then, the after credits scene for the next episode... iiiiinteresting

Three characters similar to mine // Peppermint
Tumblr media
Kanoko Urabe // Usotoki Rhetoric
Peppermint’s development as a character (especially in transitioning from her old backstory/personality to her current) is incredibly inspired by Kanoko’s character growth. Kanoko is introduced as a character who is avoided/bullied due to her ability to hear when people lie, choosing to move to another town so that her former neighbors wouldn’t feel awkward around her and her parents. She plans on keeping to herself and ignoring the lies she hears, considering it a curse until she meets a detective who helps her realize that her ability is only a curse if seen from one perspective; after helping him solve cases, Kanoko realizes that her curse can also be a blessing. Though she starts off quite formal/quiet, the detective’s personality as well as a few supporting characters help her “blossom” into someone who isn’t afraid to use her voice, and let her be herself - a cheerful, kind girl who only wants to see the best in others.
Tumblr media
Aya Marumaya // BanG Dream! Girls Band Party
Mint shares a lot of traits with Aya, particularly in how she presents herself and how determined she is to achieve her own goals. Aya is very cheery and high-spirited, unselfish in her pursuits, and helps others solely for the sake of being kind. Deep down, however, she is a sensitive girl who suffers from a complex stemming from her desire to be noticed. While Mint doesn’t particularly desire to be noticed, she does have a severe complex/fear of being forgotten, which is why she tends to keep up her cheerful demeanor - to leave a lasting mark in everyone’s memories.
Tumblr media
Minako Satake // The Idolm@ster Million Live!: Theater Days
With Minako, Mint shares two specific traits. Minako is considered one of the theater’s big sister figures; she’s dedicated to taking care of others, aiming to be of help whenever it’s possible. This primarily shows in their shared love of cooking - Minako loves to cook and is known for her ability to produce food in mass quantities. She loves seeing people happy thanks to her food; something that Mint adores as well. Due to her constant concerns over the health of her loved ones, she likes to make sure they’re all eating well; in Mint’s case, she’ll more than likely force her way in to begin cooking for someone if they aren’t.  However, in both Minako and Mint’s natural tendency to look after others and to prioritise their needs over their own, it leads to both of them becoming fidgety when they’re the one being tended to instead.

Nuvema Town’s Japanese name which is Kanoko Town (ka no ko = deer’s child = fawn), likely named after the many Shikajika (Deerling) there, but kanoko is also the name of a traditional Japanese emblem and pattern inspired by a fawn’s dappled coat. ^^

"Alina Is Comin' To Town" challenge files
This series will basically be me writing down my own experience from the challenge quests that is ongoing in the current event. I will usually report back using my first victory and the past attempts. For this event, I will be reporting back only the second half of this event as I have already done the first half before making this blog and I have unfortunately forgotten my playthroughs (and also because i don't wanna waste me cards lol).
Disclaimer: I am no means an expert or professional (lol) at Magia Record. I am simply just stating down my own experience in these challenges. Also, a quick spoiler warning to those who have not yet completed this event yet.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Challenge 11
Enemies: Momoko, Hinano and Aimi
My team: Rena and Mayu (Support) with Light Tercio (Aqua)
This challenge was very easy for me! Scrounged up as much MP as I could before the main battle happens with the trio. Prioritised Hinano and bang boom everyone is dead. This challenge can be done easily imo.
Challenge 12
Enemies: A bunch of unknowns lol
My team: Momoko and Tsuruno (Support) with Light Tercio (Flame)
A straight forward "destroy all mobs as quick as you can" type of battle. A warning, dark unknowns will have a chance to stun upon attacking! I'm not too sure about the forest unknowns.
Challenge 13
Enemies: Sayaka, Madoka and Homura (Megane)
My team: Mami and Holy Alina (Support) with Light Tercio (Forest)
A very doable challenge quest. Many strategies can be used, no matter how safe or risky it is. Tbh, I could have played it safe with double Mami but I just wanted to play Holy Alina lol. A warning, the wave of Sayakas are resistant to status ailments!
Challenge 14
Enemies: Rumor of the Chelate Mascot and Shadow Tsuruno
My team: Rena and Konoha (Support) with Light Tercio (Aqua)
Might be a tough one for some peeps. The dark Rumors will have a chance to bind when attacking, while the aqua Rumors will lower down your girls' status resistance for 3 turns every turn. If you're planning to build up MP, I suggest you destroy the aqua Rumors first. Tsuruno will be easily dispatched with a Magia. I'm not exactly sure what Tsuruno does.
Challenge 15
Enemies: Holy Mami, Himika and Felicia
My team: Tsuruno and Kyoko (Support) with Light Tercio (Flame)
Pretty fun challenge for me. The wave of Holy Mamis will have a chance to poison upon attacking so be cautious and plan out your strat if you're planning on building up MP. I recommend you prioritise Felicia first, Himika then Holy Mami.
Challenge 16
Enemies: Rooftop Witch Minion and Roopftop Witch
My team: Double Yachiyo with Light Tercio (Aqua)
Boom. Done. No really. This level is highly manageable with double Yachiyo and can be taken out pretty quickly if both are fully slotted.
Challenge 17
Enemies: Rena, Iroha and Tsuruno
My team: Yachiyo and Kirika (Support) with Dark Tercio (Aqua)
Kirika definitely helped out in this challenge. With a taunt Memoria, she sponged out a lot of damage for Yachiyo. A warning, Tsuruno will buff Rena and Iroha with chance to evade every turn! F u n f a c t, Yachiyo killed off Tsuruno through counter damage from Kirika's Connect on my playthrough.
Challenge 18
Enemies: Nanny Witch Minion and Nanny Witch
My team: Mami and Kanoko (Support) with Dark Tercio (Forest)
This one was... honestly pretty weird for me. Some of the minions will inflict all girls with a guaranteed poison so be careful again. The witch will be a problem. With a lot of health and a hidden reduce damage ailment, you'll have to either blast with very huge damage, build up MP or cheese your way out with a lock. This witch will be tough to beat but can be dispatched if you use the correct Memoria.
Challenge 19
Enemies: Holy Alina, Karin, Hinano and Rika
My team: Momoko, Tsuruno and Suzune (Support) with Element Delta (Flame)
This challenge is definitely one of the hardest of this half. This challenge may be tough to beat on a first try. The wave of Karins will guarantee a bind on a random girl. Yes. Each Karin. If you want, equip your girls with "Unwavering Light" or "The Hand Arisa Grasped" to negate bind. I went in with Momoko being a tank and Tsuruno and Suzune to collect as much MP as they can. The main group is extremely vulnerable to Magias so I highly recommend you go this route.
Challenge 20
Black Feather Minion, White Feather Minion and Rumor of the Flower Speaker
My team: Double Mami with Light Tercio (Forest)
The feathers will do the same old counter skill every turn. Yay. For this challenge, I actually recommend going blasting off with a Holy Alina. The main reason is the Rumor. Apparently it has a hidden bind resist and only bind. Though it will only attack once and won't activate any skills until every third turn, you should kill them off as quickly as possible as they have a pretty high health pool.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Annnnnnnd that ends this event's challenge files. I honestly didn't had a format for this post so I apologise if this was extremely difficult to digest lol. I really wanna listen to any feedback that anyone sends this way. I want to improve the conditions of this blog and to not choke the MR tag with very long posts. :')
I hope to hear from all of you!

Chapter 5: I swear to the kami!
Tumblr media
Kanoko awakens in the Butterfly Estate, her body throbbing with pain and her heart heavy with sorrow. Concerned for her well-being, Kyojuro attempts to persuade her to seek refuge at his residence before the funeral commences.
But how would his father react to the presence of the last Time Breathing user in his house?
Author note: Chapter 4/5 of the Flashback Arc. Where Kyojuro and Senjuro are rays of sunshine, and Shinjuro a massive jerk.
Tumblr media
When you opened your eyes, you were greeted by warm sunlight and chirping birds. Above you, a large window with patterned glass revealed a clear, azure sky dotted with small clouds.
It was strange how the day continued to unfold peacefully, as if nothing out of the ordinary had happened last night, while for you, time had stopped flowing. The inside of your chest felt hollow. You knew that you would never be the same again for the rest of your days.
Your eyes were swollen and dry, and your throat hurt. As you attempted to sit up, your body protested with pain and your muscles failed you. Something tightly held onto your hand. Your gaze shifted apathetically to the side. Kyojuro was sitting beside you, dozing off in a chair, one arm folded against himself and the other holding your hand.
The sight of your friend triggered several flashes from the previous night. His red eyes shining with dark determination under the moonlight as he severed the neck of your grandmother, who had transformed into a nightmarish demon. Blood, blood everywhere. Your breathing quickened.
Sensing your restlessness, the Slayer instantly opened his eyes and sat up straight in his seat.
"Ah! You've regained consciousness. That's reassuring... How do you feel?" he immediately asked, concerned. He made sure not to raise his voice too much, so as not to startle you.
"I..." Your dry throat betrayed you, and you coughed. He helped you sit and handed you a glass of water at once, from which you took a few sips. "I hurt all over... My grandfather and grandmother...?" You remembered much of the fateful evening, but an irrational part of you wanted to be proven wrong.
"They're dead," he answered with regret, and your heart sank deeper. "Your grandmother was transformed into a demon and attacked your grandfather and you. Do you remember what happened after our training?"
"I... I didn't go home right away. I wanted... I wanted to take a walk in town to buy soba noodles. When I returned, the sun had already set, and my grandfather was already dead. I realized it was the work of a demon, so I took my sword and... I searched everywhere for my grandmother because I wanted to protect her... but deep down, I was afraid..." You started sobbing again, just like the night before. "I knew it could be her... and the worst happened... I don't know if it was Kibutsuji Muzan or one of the Twelve Kizuki who came to my house while I was away... I didn't see anyone else."
"Hmm... In any case, the goal was probably to end your lineage. After all, even if you're not part of the Demon Slayer Corps, you hunt demons and forge swords for that purpose," Kyojuro replied with a dark expression, clenching his fists. "Utterly despicable. Kibutsuji and his underlings must pay for their crimes."
You didn't respond, tears silently rolling down your cheeks. He couldn't help but notice that you kept your gaze lowered, deliberately avoiding looking at him. He tried to ignore the heartache it caused him. After hesitating, he placed a hand on your shoulder, gently stroking it with his thumb.
"Kanoko... I am sorry, for your grandmother," he whispered, his voice filled with palpable pain.
"Sorry that she became a demon? Or for beheading her before my eyes?" you retorted bitterly.
A part of you knew you were being unfair. Thanks to him, you were still alive. He deserved gratitude rather than your venom. But in that moment, you lacked both the strength and the desire to give it. Dear gods, you couldn't even look him in the face.
"You couldn't have done anything about the first, and I suppose you didn't have a choice with the latter," you reluctantly tried to reason.
Kyojuro didn't respond immediately, but he gently withdrew his hand from your shoulder and settled back in his seat, giving you some space. A heavy silence hung in the air before he spoke again, his voice filled with comfort and sorrow.
"Both. I wish I had been there earlier. Maybe we could have prevented the demonization, or at least saved your grandfather, but... you are right, we can't change the past. The deed is done. As for your grandmother, it pains me to have ended her life, but I believe her human self would have preferred that over killing you. I would do it again, as it allowed me to save you, but I understand if you don't see it that way. I can only hope you will forgive me one day."
You closed your eyes, trying to push away the memories seared into your soul of your best friend executing a member of your own family. Unable to respond but not wanting to ignore him, you slowly nodded.
"Kocho-san said you have about a week left to recover enough to leave," he continued in a more neutral tone. "Your physical injuries aren't too severe. If you want, you can come to my estate afterward."
"No, I... I have to prepare for the funerals and keep the urns at home for at least the forty-nine days following the cremation."
"It's dangerous for you to stay alone at home for now, Kanoko. Especially at night. I even think... we should make it appear that you died during the attack. At least for a certain period of time."
You let the suggestion sink in in silence. Then, clenching your fists, you insisted, "I won't invite anyone, but I will perform the rituals... I want their souls to go to the afterworld."
"... Fine," he sighed. "I will stay with you as much as possible, if I'm not on a mission. But after guarding the urns, you shouldn't stay there for too long. You can come live with me for a while."
Previously, the proposition would have make your heart skip a few beats. But now, the joy and gratitude you should have felt were entangled with your conflicting feelings about daily interaction with the man who had taken the life of your closest relative. Even his family members resembled younger and older versions of himself. You tried to contemplate the idea pragmatically and cooly, dissociating yourself from your emotions as much as possible.
"Would your father agree to this...?"
"I will talk to him, don't worry about that."
"... I'll consider it," you murmured.
He sighed, seeming relieved not to receive a direct rejection. He nodded and gently embraced you, being careful not to apply pressure on your wounds. Your tears had ceased, and now a sense of emptiness enveloped you. You no longer knew where to direct your grief or anger, whether towards the humans or the demons who had taken everything from you. Muzan, of course, bore a significant responsibility for your misfortune, but he was untouchable. It was akin to hating a natural disaster. Who knows where the bandits who killed your parents where, and their search would probably be fruitless. Part of you wanted to resent Kyojuro, who was just beside you, even though your rational mind understood that none of what had transpired was his fault. You felt horrible. The person you despised the most in that moment was undoubtedly yourself.
"I'm sorry," you murmured, gently pushing him away. "I need to be alone for now."
A pained expression briefly crossed Kyojuro's face, but he quickly concealed it with an understanding smile.
"Hmm! Of course, I'll leave you alone. Kaname-san isn't far, he can send me a message if you need anything. I will come to get you before you depart from the Butterfly Estate."
With your gaze fixed on your hands, you didn't even watch your friend leave. You simply heard the soft click of the western door as he departed, leaving you alone with your thoughts and the moans of the injured Demon Slayers around you.
In the following days, you received visits from Kocho Kanae, the mistress of the estate, who, despite being only sixteen years old, exuded a sense of maturity and beauty beyond her age. She examined you like the medical prodigy she was and offered comforting words, but the emptiness inside you continued to grow.
When Kanae permitted you to leave the premises, Kyojuro awaited you at the entrance of the building as planned. To your immense relief, and perhaps his as well, you managed to meet his gaze and greet him. He insisted that you stay at the Rengoku Estate before the funeral vigil, which you had scheduled for the following day. Though still uncertain, you reluctantly accepted his proposal.
Upon your arrival, you found Senjuro waiting anxiously under the porch, wearing a concerned expression. He squealed with relief and threw himself into your arms upon seeing you, deeply affected by the sight of your bandages and vacant expression.
"Kanoko! I was so worried about you!"
You gently stroked the little boy's hair, managing a ghostly smile on your lips in an attempt to reassure him. Though it was faint, it marked the first semblance of a smile since regaining consciousness. Unbeknownst to you, Kyojuro was watching you intently.
"Everything is fine, Senjuro," you lied, hugging him affectionately. Truthfully, the embrace brought some comfort this time, making you feel a little glad that you agreed to come. "I will be staying here tonight... I hope it won't be too much trouble for you."
"On the contrary! I only wish the circumstances were different," he replied with a hint of sadness.
You nodded, eager to change the subject.
"Senjuro, could you please make me some tea? I've missed your excellent tea-brewing skills a lot lately."
"Of course!"
He hurried off immediately, and you followed suit, entering the estate along with Kyojuro. You were apprehensive about meeting the patriarch of the Rengoku family by staying overnight, as you were usually visiting during daytime and only for a few hours. However, he was nowhere to be seen. Anticipating your query, Kyojuro informed you.
"You won't see my father tonight. He... is not in a condition to meet you. Hopefully, you will have the opportunity to meet him tomorrow before your departure."
You weren't sure if you could consider this potential meeting fortunate, but you refrained from discussing it further. With the near absence of servants, the two brothers took charge of preparing your meal and drawing a bath for you to relax in. They then showed you the room that would be yours for the night, while they would sleep together in a nearby room.
The tea and bath worked wonders, bringing a sense of relief that you hadn't felt in a while. For the first time since... well, you chose not to dwell on it, trying to hold onto the fleeting moments of well-being. The boys had arranged a kimono and juban for you to wear for the night, so you could keep the clothes given to you by Kanae for the day.
You joined the brothers in the kitchen as they continued to prepare dinner. Kyojuro appeared determined to make hayashi beef rice for you, while Senjuro frantically tried to control him and keep up with everything he was doing. Their domestic scene brought a slight smile to your face, the second of the evening. They noticed it and their excitement grew even more.
"You see, Senjuro! I knew hayashi beef rice would make her happy!"
"No, aniue... Kanoko smiled because we're being ridiculous... There's sauce everywhere..."
"It's your favorite dish, isn't it, Kanoko? You're going to love it!" Kyojuro continued fervently, undeterred.
"I wouldn't be so sure..." his younger brother tried to interject, sweat forming on his forehead.
They politely declined your offer to help, and you kept them company, gently sipping the light tea prepared by Senjuro. Kneeling at the table, you noticed the youngest of the Rengoku brothers bringing a tray for their father. It seemed they didn't expect him to join them, as the three of you already clasped hands and expressed your thanks for the meal. Was the patriarch too intoxicated to come? You refrained from asking the question and took a bite of the beef. It was a bit hard to chew, and the sauce didn't have exactly the right flavor, but for some reason, it felt like the best hayashi beef of your life. Perhaps it was because they had prepared it especially to cheer you up, with love and care, or maybe it evoked you nice memories of your family meals and reminded you that you were still alive and well, and that it was a blessing in itself... Tears welled up in your eyes.
Kyojuro and Senjuro panicked instantly.
"Wow... Is it that bad, Kanoko?" Kyojuro worriedly exclaimed, suddenly recalling that he wasn't the best cook. "I'm sorry, please don't cry..."
"Here, have some tea to wash away the taste!" Senjuro rushed, handing you a full cup.
"No, it's... it's actually very good. Thank you for the meal. And thank you, Kyojuro, for saving me. I owe so much to both of you. I won't ever forget what you've done for me."
You pushed your plate aside and bowed deeply. They both immediatly showered you with comforting words, and you managed to smile again. Straightening up, you mustered your resolve and continued eating with newfound energy. Despite the difficulties and sorrow, you knew you had to gather yourself and not burden them further. Your grandparents had raised you to be a strong, independent woman, and now you had to honor their memory by proving them they did well.
The following day brought a slight improvement in your condition, thanks to the care and attention given by the Rengoku brothers. However, you were aware that it would take time before you could fully regain your former joyfulness, if such a feat was possible. Deep inside, regret consumed you, making it difficult to accept the deaths of your grandparents and even your parents. Nevertheless, within you, the flickers of a new determination began to ignite.
As you pondered these thoughts during breakfast with your two friends, Rengoku Shinjuro made his first appearance before you. Despite the early hour, a faint scent of sake accompanied him, a fragrance that seemed to linger around him as he indulged in it daily. The two brothers immediately straightened up beside you, their expressions growing serious as Kyojuro's usual smile faded and Senjuro appeared frozen with fear.
"What is all this commotion in my house since yesterday?" the patriarch barked. "And what is this young girl doing here?"
"Father, this is Nagase Kanoko. I have already informed you about her and her arrival to our home," Kyojuro introduced; the sudden change in your friends' demeanor aroused your apprehension. Your senses went on high alert. As the Flame Pillar, even if he was less and less active, the father of the Rengoku family was not an ordinary drunkard.
You carefully set down your chopsticks and humbly bowed to the patriarch, lowering your forehead to the ground.
"Nice to meet you, Rengoku-san. I apologize for any disturbance caused and I thank you for..."
"Get out of here. I don't know what my sons see in you, but I will not tolerate strangers in my domain, especially troublemakers who think they are above the Demon Slayers." Your face visibly paled at his words.
"I don't believe I'm above anyone," you tried to defend yourself. The two brothers immediately intervened, with Kyojuro taking a prominent role.
"Father, she has just lost her family to demons. Please show her more respect and kindness. You have taken in people in need before, like Iguro. Surely you haven't forgotten?"
"Don't lecture me, you worthless son. If her family had abandoned demon hunting, especially going solo, they wouldn't be in this predicament. They got what they deserved."
"Father!" The two young brothers gaped in shock at their father's harsh words.
"Get out of here, girl! Let the death of your loved ones serve as a lesson! We are powerless against evil. Stay away from the Kisatsutai and their activities if you value your pathetic life!"
He took a step towards you, seemingly prepared to forcibly remove you. For a moment, you stood frozen, overwhelmed by his threatening presence. Kyojuro intervened, but his father pushed him violently aside, causing him to stumble and collide with Senjuro. Regaining your composure, you quickly rose to your feet.
"Please, do not fight! I will leave. But Rengoku-san, mark my words, I will make you swallow your words about my family. I swear to the kami, I will become the best demon hunter my lineage has borne, and put an end to the peril caused by Muzan and his evil cohort. Then you will have no choice but to apologize to me and my ancestors!" The sparks of hope that you had felt awakening within you the previous day turn into a blazing inferno fueled by anger.
"Keep talking, you filthy brat..."
Sensing that the situation could escalate further if you remained, you briefly bowed to your friends and swiftly departed from the premises. The echoes of the argument between Kyojuro and his father lingered behind you, sending shivers down your spine.
Perhaps it was a mistake to have come to their domain... but now, you had an oath to fulfill.

Taisho Secret: Prior to her passing, Kanoko's grandmother had been arranging a marriage between her granddaughter and a swordsmith, in line with the family tradition. The prospective groom would have been Haganezuka Hotaru. Unaware of these plans, Kanoko still suspected that her grandparents were intending to convince her about marriage soon. While sorting through her family's belongings after the funeral, she stumbled upon the letters exchanged between the chief of the Swordsmith Village and her grandmother. It goes without saying that Kanoko swiftly put an end to the marriage arrangements without a second thought. Poor Hotaru.

What’s In a Book? Part 29
While going through my collection I managed to find a few books that have yet to be featured on here yet. I decided to go with this one as, upon further review, I noticed that it actually contained a wealth of information that I had previously ignored ^^;

Image of book’s cover courtesy of myself. Hana Akari: Showa Meigiren (はなあかり: 昭和名妓連) - Brilliant Flowers: The Showa Period’s Finest Geisha by Kobunshi Katsura (桂小文枝) (ISBN Unknown). Date of Publication: 1988 Language: Japanese and English (Some Essays and Names Only) Format: Hardcover Availability: Can be found up for auction on a fairly regular basis Price: Anywhere from $30 - $80 Errors: 0 This book is interesting, and that’s putting it mildly. Basically, it provides us with some of the best raw data for its time: The names of the most prominent geisha in each district of each city across all of Japan. It is a literal who’s who guide to the karyukai across the country in the late 1980s and is illuminating both in small essays that can be found at the front and back of the book explaining various schools and styles, but especially because it provides us with images, most in full color, of these amazing women.  The book overall is divided into regions which are then broken down further from there. I’m not too sure why they were skipped over, but it’s possible that the author did not have any connections to them. The most informative part that I admit I skipped initially is the small print under each geisha’s name: their natori specialty, natori teachers, and natori names. This means that we can trace back what schools were the main specialty of each region going back decades. Since this is invaluable for anyone studying geisha over time, I’ll write in what schools were followed, but I will keep names a secret. Districts are as follows: Part 1: Hokkaido (北海道) Set 1 Asahikawa (旭川) - Kineya (杵屋) Set 2: Sapporo (札幌) - Wakayagi (若柳) for dance and Tadeko (蓼胡) for song Set 3: Otaru (小樽) - Fujima (藤間) for dance and Tadeko (蓼胡), Kineya (杵屋), Kiyomoto (清元), Shunnichi (春日), and Tokiwazu (常磐津) for song. Set 7: Kagoshima (鹿児島) - Kineya (杵屋) and Tagoto (田毎) for song. The reason why this book has no ISBN is because it was self published. The original cover price was ¥30,000, which is almost $300 USD. This price was likely set due to the vast amount of research done, including acquiring the many photographs, and printing costs. This price was also likely due to it being targeted at serious karyukai connoisseurs as that price in the 1980s would have been much higher now due to inflation. Nowadays you don’t have to pay as much for this book as most Japanese sellers see it as outdated and it can be found quite regularly on Japanese retail sites, such as Yahoo Japan Auctions or Rakuten.   The only “errors: that I could find were some spelling issues, but that’s because they’re using the Japanese way of writing Romaji and not the Hepburn System. So, I’m not counting them as errors, but rather just making note of them to anyone who purchases this book. Rating: ✪✪✪✪ (out of 5)

Notes From the 2019 Myanimelist.net Challenges - Part 2: Manga
This post will be talking about the Manga Reading Challenge. As with Part 1, this post will be talking about some of my favorite manga I read for this challenge, as well as some others I had thoughts about.
Let’s do this.
Honorable Mentions/Other Notables:
My Girlfriend’s a Geek - completed for the task “Read a comedy or Slice of Life manga”
Tumblr media
College student Taiga mainly wants two things: money and a hot older girlfriend. When Taiga applies for a part-time job, he falls right away for his senpai, Yuiko. They eventually get to know each other. When Taiga asks Yuiko to be his girlfriend, she has a confession: she’s a fujoshi. Not knowing what that means, Taiga says he doesn’t care what she is and they get into a relationship.
I thought this was heartwarming and funny at times (reminded me of when I had to tell my mom what yaoi meant - don’t ask), but I feel like the premise kinda wore thin after a while and some of the jokes fell flat near the end.
If I had to pick, this would be the Worst of the Challenge this year.
Arisa - completed for the task “Read a manga with less than 10,000 completed members”
Tumblr media
Tsubasa and Arisa are twin sisters who haven’t seen each other in a while. Tsubasa has a reputation of being a fighter and has mainly guy friends. Arisa is more of a girly girl and is the popular girl in her class. Tsubasa just wants to be more like Arisa. When they reconnect one day, Arisa suggests, for fun, that Tsubasa take her place at school for one day. Tsubasa later learns some dark serets about Arisa’s school life and plans to get to the bottom of things.
This may look shoujo-y, but is more of a psychological mystery/thriller, which I like. Generic at times, but fun. I feel like the ending had some problems, though.
Othello - completed for the task “Read a manga ranked below #1000 in the database”
Tumblr media
Yaya is shy, naive, trusting, and afraid to speak up for herself, which makes her an easy target. Her “friends” are huge dicks, call her names like “Yaya the cry-ya”, and take advantage of her and play pranks on her. She has a crush on a classmate, she dreams of being a singer, she cosplays occasionally; pretty average things.
Little does anyone - including Yaya herself - know, she has a split personality who is Yaya’s opposite in every way. Nana is loud, bold, brash, fashionable, and not afraid to speak up and dispense justice against Yaya’s “friends.”
This manga was actually pretty fun. I was worried it would be kinda repetitive from the first volume or two (Yaya gets tricked --> Nana comes out and dispenses justice --> Yaya’s crush is curious, etc.), but it got a little deeper into some of Yaya’s psyche. Seeing Nana dispense justice was also pretty fun, even though it could be a little unrealistic at times.
Hana and Hina After School - completed for the task “Read a manga with a cast consisting of mostly one gender”
Tumblr media
Hana and Hina are two girls working a part-time job at a toy store. Hana is small and shy. Hina is tall, fashionable, and secretly a model on the side. They get off on the wrong foot at first, but they eventually become friends. Since their school doesn’t allow part-time jobs, they help each other keep their secret and their feelings eventually grow past friendship.
This manga was ADORABLE!!!
I find it good to read yuri/shoujo ai written by a woman rather than a man. The progression of their relationship, while seeming a little fast, was so nice to see. So pure, cinnamon rolls too good for this world. Especially when the manga shows each girl laying in bed thinking about how cute the other one is. A heartwarming ending as well.
Beach Stars - completed for the task “Read a Sports or Games manga”
Tumblr media
Nanase Iruka is a short tomboy who loves volleyball. When her school’s volleyball club is shut down, Iruka is pretty upset. When her club-mates try to cheer her up, Iruka discovers beach volleyball. She forms a beach volleyball club at her school with a goal of winning against the local volleyball champion.
A bit fanservice-y at times, but I had fun with this one. It was fun to see Iruka and her friends compete and succeed. I also liked the growing friendship of a couple freshmen who come into the story several chapters in.
Favorites from the Challenge:
Koi Dano Ai Dano - completed for the task “Read a prequel/sequel to a manga that you’ve already read”
Tumblr media
The cast from The Secret Notes of Lady Kanoko is back, and now they’re in high school!
Kanoko and Tsubaki are now attending the same high school. They end up getting recruited into their school’s newspaper club by one of their senpais. Kanoko becomes the Chief Strategist and helps the club out in their rivalry against other clubs, including the Broadcasting Club. Also, Kanoko is oblivious to Tsubaki’s growing crush on her.
Pretty much everything I liked about Lady Kanoko makes an appearance here. I still love Kanoko. She has a good head on her shoulders. These characters are not typical shoujo characters. I also love Tsubaki and Kanoko’s chemistry together. Comedy, romance, and a little suspense. Good mix.
The Embalmer - completed for the task “Read a manga serialized in a josei magazine”
Tumblr media
Mamiya is an embalmer, a profession treated with disdain in Japan. He seems okay with being an outcast, though. Throughout the manga, we learn why he chose his career, what goes through his mind, and stories from his job.
This manga really made me think. I did not know until now that embalming wasn’t really appreciated everywhere as it is in the US. I honestly did not expect this (pretty sad at times) meditation on love, loss, and grief, but I appreciate it all the same.
Annarasumanara - completed for the task “Read a manhua or manhwa”
Tumblr media
There are rumors in town of a magician at a tent in the abandoned theme park. He always starts his show by asking “Do you believe in magic?”
Yoon Ah-ee, a student who is living in poverty, has a chance encounter with this magician that changes her life forever.
The art in this one is pretty unique and cool. The plot was very interesting and the characters had some depth. This is another manga from the challenge that made me think. Thumbs up.
Alice 19th - completed for the task “Read a manga by a female author/artist”
Tumblr media
Alice has always been jealous of her older sister, Mayura. Mayura is good at everything she does and is popular at school. Alice is bullied at school and is afraid to stand up for herself. She also has a crush on Kyo, who starts dating Mayura.
One day, Alice encounters a bunny, who turns out to be a magical girl named Nyozeka. Nyozeka tells Alice that she is destined to learn the Lotis Words and become a Lotis Master. When Mayura disappears during an argument with Alice, Alice becomes determined to learn the Lotis Words and get her sister back.
This manga was great. I feel like this should get an anime adaptation. The art is great. The story is pretty cool, with magic focusing on words being something I hadn’t read before, or at least in a while. It’s pretty shoujo-y, but not too cliche.
Kasane - completed for the task “Read a manga that started serialization before 2015″
Tumblr media
Kasane Fuchi has inherited her actress mother’s talent, but not her good looks. No one will give her a chance because she is so ugly. Fortunately for her, she has something her mother left her: a lipstick that allows her to swap faces with whoever she kisses for 12 hours.
One day, a talent agent who knew her mother ropes her into being the body double for Nina Tanazawa, a struggling actress. Things go downhill from there.
This wins Best of the Challenge this year on the manga side for me. This manga blew my mind a few times while I was reading it. The story is interesting and unpredictable with plenty of twists and turns. Everyone basically crosses the Moral Event Horizon at some point. An interesting psychological manga. Highly recommended.

also for some reason the captions for both episodes occasionally had discrepancies between what was said and what the captions said? at first i thought it was just an oddity but it actually seems that the captions were drawing on an earlier version of the script that was a slightly more direct translation (b/c one of the differences was a change of dialog for prof oak that the bulbapedia trivia section for the episode pointed out & the captions saying that iris said ‘kanoko town’ when refering to nuvema town)
