new Tablet Saga discovery: people use a tiny gamepad controller for android devices as a keydial for art software shortcuts. epic win i think this is what i need in terms of having side buttons but not a wholeass overwhelming keyboard!

So I finally found a use for my $400 paperweight investment that's been sitting in a drawer for the past 4 years LOL.

Decided to grab the keydial as well since it got awkward using the keyboard.

But I've been learning substance painter to properly texture my mesh builds. 👌💯

Hi guys. I’m unable to draw at the moment. I tripped and braced myself with my arm and not quite sure what happened, but it hurts. Also my keydial died on me, but I’ve ordered a new one that should be here next week.

as an iPad user, its hard to adjust to not having a touch screen, and i keep tapping the screen to undo or redo, but with my K20 keydial, I'm getting the hang of it and learning lol

(if anyone is wondering, my tablet is the Huion Kamvas 22+ and I'm using CSP)

Hiii! You're an amazing artist, and I was wondering if you would recommend any Wacom tablets (or something similar?) I'm not sure what you use for your program but if you could give any recs that would be amazing!!

i have a huion kamvas 13 with a KD100 mini keydial, and i use clip studio paint!! my current tablet has lasted about a year and a half now, and i’ve never used a wacom but i’ve heard good things about them!!! :D

update I picked up a huion keydial mini because when I draw I have an APM on par with a SC2 player and my new desk made reaching for my keyboard really aggravating I got all the keybinds set up for it and it worked for approximately 30 seconds before I fucked something up, but those 30 seconds were glorious. I dub my ergonomic problems officially solved

I feel like 80% of my art problems right now could be solved by getting a desk that wasn't made for toddlers

Tablet Saga Updates:

tried galaxy tab/spen and its sooo slippery actually. i think that was one of the spens that had a plastic nib, not a rubbery nib. disliked that

paperlike screen covers for it, allegedly, mess up the image and destroy the nibs

xp-pen mdp has compatibility issues where krita wont recognize its button (if i were to go android i would ??probably?? go krita bc i tried that a little on pc and can get more used to it and also it is not a soul sucking subscription model which would block me even more with the shame of "wasting it" or with being unable to cancel. all subscription services are, intentionally or not, made to extort nd people and thats my hot take of the day)

huion kamvas slate exists but sucks, it's allegedly worse than the mdp and not all the parts were actually by huion, so nope

i went to the art library to try an xp-pen artist 12 pro again but this time connected to my own laptop, with my own usual sai, and also with mapping the side buttons how i need them. heaven and earth. everything is so much easier on a familiar software with a familiar stabilizer omfggg.

that would have been the way to go, but that wont give me the ~spontaneity~ of drawing anywhere.

i read microsoft surfaces have compatibility issues with sai. that however was a years old post and i dont even know if thats for sai1 or sai2. if i went windows, i would for sure stay with sai bc that would be the main Purpose of staying with windows. they are also expensive as fuck and for what.

ipad is very very very likely a no. the idea of also being able to use it as a second screen as a usual screen tablet with my computers power is too appealing to get an ipad that can only do that with apple devices (because apple is too interested in keeping you on their hook)

everything is getting so convoluted. how do i get a tab that is not overloaded with what i dont need yet has all the stuff i actually need?? i literally need this thing just for drawing i do not care about everything else. i dont have other stuff to use it for, a computer and phone is more convenient for any other uses, i just wanna draw. it does not need any kind of super mega features but drawing has to feel good and thats the main point. it has to have a screen that feels good and a pen that feels good. and software without glitches. Thatse It.

drawing-geared android devices seem to be in the nascent, awkward 1st gen stage. the mdp came out last year i think. i think what i rly want is the mdp but without those pen related glitches. and also i wish their keydial for normal tablets worked with this one. i loved properly configured side buttons.

but that does not exist does it? so what the hell do i do now? try to make a galaxy tab into an art device that it is not, with paperlike protector, alternate nibs etc? buy the mdp and put up with its shortcomings? opt for something else than krita for the mdp? just wait around until the second gen of standalone android tablets is born and be a miserable, art blocked glob in the meantime? give up on portability and just do an xp-pen artist something a little bigger than 12 for less money?
