Paper Man (2009)
Tumblr media
Paper Man is well acted and imaginative, sometimes to its own detriment. It’s a dramedy about Richard (Jeff Daniels), a struggling writer married to a frigid wife who's drifting away from him (Lisa Kudrow as Claire). He befriends a young woman named Abby (Emma Stone) who has problems of her own, like a chicken-shit boyfriend who doesn’t really care about her very much, among other things. They help each other out in the only way that two broken people can. Maybe this unlikely friendship will allow Richard to let go of his childhood imaginary friend, Captain Excellent (Ryan Reynolds).
It’s a nice blend of a comedy and a drama. The performances are quite good, particularly Emma Stone and Geoff Daniels, who manage to come off as friends without the creepy older-guy, girl-that’s-so-hot-she-can’t-be-touched thing lasting for too long. There are genuinely funny moments and just as many (maybe a few more) where the drama feels genuine and, for some perhaps even touching. It will make the predictable plot elements (you know exactly what'll happen once Richard offers to host Emma’s boyfriend’s party at his place) seem like details.
Ironically, the most unique part of this film is also the one which should've been axed. I’m talking about Ryan Reynolds as Captain Excellent. He’s fine in the role and there are fun moments with him, but he doesn’t add much to the plot, except for an ending that I felt worked at the time but thinking back shouldn't have been there. The film lasts nearly two hours and there’s no reason for it.
Paper Man feels like it was this indie drama/comedy about messed up people getting their things back in order but the distributor and producers demanded that something extra be added to make it less typical. Captain Excellent isn’t a bad character, you’ll enjoy seeing him on-screen, but he’s not necessary and makes a few moments with Abby towards the end kind of needlessly dark (It’s hard to explain without giving away, but it has to do with imaginary friends and growing up).
If you’re into these quirky-weird stories about damaged characters fixing each other, this is run-of-the-mill stuff. If you’re not familiar with the “genre”, Paper Man is a nice introduction to these types of indies films but ultimately, it can only lead you towards something better. It’s not a bad movie. It's worth seeing if you’re interested but don’t let the superhero on the front cover fool you, Captain Excellent is in many ways the least interesting thing about Paper Man. (On DVD, September 14, 2014)
