Fan Fiction Recommendations
I figured I’d take the time to put down some of my favorite fan fictions for anyone who wants them. I am only putting up completed series, with a few exceptions. And I’ll add more as I think about it. Make sure to give the authors lots of love! They deserve it!
Also, let me know if any links do not work.

ARC Review of The Rebel King by Kennedy Ryan
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Summary:
Maxim Cade and Lennix Moon Hunter are finally together after over a decade of near-misses. However, their relationship is tested by a kidnapping, then further tragedy that leads to a political situation that will have long-lasting implications for them, their loved ones, and the entire country.
My Review:
I finally got a chance to read the Kingmaker series leading up to its rerelease and I'm so glad I did. It really is a gorgeous series— very grand and sweeping in a way modern romances very rarely are: You have your Kennedy-esque family (no seriously, the way I SCREAMED when Max invoked Bobby Kennedy at the point in time he did) except Old Oil Money instead of New England patricians, you have two characters that should basically be mortal enemies because of what his family did to hers and yet they can't help falling in love, then you have this decades-long love story, the heroine is nicknamed the Kingmaker (which I am personally obsessed with; I love reading about a good kingmaker personality— both in real life and in fiction), and now the hero who is the Rebel King (the origin story is that his middle name is Kingsmen and his mom used to call him and his brother by saying "All the king's men" which.... if that isn't a reference to the book All The King's Men, I don't know what it is).
I deeply appreciate Kennedy Ryan's dedication to portraying Lennix's Native American heritage in a respectful manner— Kennedy consulted members of the Yavapai-Apache Nation and members of other tribes while writing these books. And Lennix's culture isn't just some background thing; it impacts how she lives, her ideals, and her politics.
Speaking of politics, I think regardless of your personal views, the political aspect of this novel is written in a fairly simple, approachable way that doesn't get too technical, and Kennedy seamlessly intertwines it with the romance. Do I think a lot of it was unrealistic? Yes, but the extraordinary political situation Kennedy sets up calls for an extraordinary solution so I rolled with it.
As for Lennix and Max's relationship, I am a fan of the overall trajectory in this book; a lot of authors tend to get lost somewhere along the way after the main characters get together, but Kennedy Ryan did a great job by not injecting petty drama or whatever, but rather, the turn the plot takes means there are lots of tough questions they need to answer about their future sooner rather than later. Also, reading them as a couple (which we don't see much of in the previous book) also reveals some interesting aspects to their relationship: Maxim is a lot more possessive over Lennix in this book than I thought be would be (and I feel like this goes beyond just as a response to the situation in the beginning of this book), and outside of the relationship, he becomes a lot more maverick-y, if that makes sense. Actually, in hindsight, Lennix is fairly steady in comparison.
The sex:
The sex scenes in this book were seamless and really fit into the plot well, especially considering the insane span of emotions both Lennix and Max (especially Max) go through during the course of this book. And who said sex in a committed relationship gets boring? Not these two. Standout moments in this book for me include a very emotional sex scene after a very tragic incident (which would probably constitute as a spoiler), a scene in their kitchen where Max is full-on sucking Lennix's nipples through her sweatshirt and the noises the make gets everyone in the apartment hot and bothered lolol, and of course, the rare contemporary romance butt stuff (for both of them!).
Overall:
Honestly, I'd recommend this book to anyone and everyone: romance readers in general, fans of political dramas, anyone looking for a diverse romance... you name it, I genuinely think this book has it.
Thank you to Bloom Books and NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for my review.

Revealed- Arthur p2
Lewis had lost a lot of his anger towards Arthur while traveling with the Mystery Skulls again.
Yes, he still remembered seeing Arthur push him, but it was so hard to hate someone who was doing everything in their power (and then some) to try and find him. Who would happily wax poetic about how much he meant to them, without a single lie or falsehood in his speech or behavior. The person who really, honestly wanted him back.
It was so hard to connect the vicious, cruelly grinning face of his killer with the exhausted mechanic that was determined to bring him home. Who wanted to bring him back to his family (god, his family, they still didn't know). Who wanted him to help get Vivi's memories back. Who just wanted things to go back to how they should be.
He was still frustrated and bitter about his passing, but he just didn't have the hatred he had when he first woke in the Cave, dead as a doornail with no explanation why.
And the way the blonde had (many times) risked himself to protect Vivi from harm? As much as he disliked him, Lewis couldn't be more grateful to Arthur for saving the blunette's life.
He looked up at the quickly darkening sky. A blizzard looked to be moving in, and fast. He had to find Arthur and Mystery and get them inside before the storm hit. Neither would last through the drop in temperature. He let loose a number of his Deadbeats, partially to make finding the blonde and not-dog easier, and partially to keep an eye out for the creature that attacked them. (It was still out there, possibly watching. Waiting.)
Tracking his way back to Arthur was actually pretty easy. Because of Lewis' fiery nature, he'd left a rather convenient trail of melted snow in his wake during his dash for the cabin. But the snow was already starting to fall so he had to move quickly before the trail was hidden from sight, and Arthur caught hypothermia or something equally terrible.
He squinted through the darkness, finally spotting the yellow and orange lump laying at the base of a tree with a small black and red form next to it. Exactly where Lewis had hoped they would still be. It was good to know that Mystery had trusted him to protect Vivi, and willing to stay behind to keep Arthur safe. But something was off. The yellow form seemed too- big? Long?
Lewis' non-existent stomach lurched in alarm.
That thing- It didn't have some kind of werewolf-syndrome going on, did it? It couldn't transfer it's condition via injury, could it?
He surged forward, dropping beside the unconscious blonde and pulling him into his arms, eliciting a small, startled yip from the dog beside him. Arthur didn't stir.
“Arthur! Come one, wake up!” He spoke softly, very gently shaking the other and trying to get some kind of reaction. He couldn't detect temperature very well, but he could tell that Arthur was far too cold, his skin too pale, his breathing too shallow.
Worse still were the trails of blood dripping down the blonde's body, staining the once-white snow a dark crimson. Lewis could see the the long, diagonal gashes across Arthur's chest and side, and he knew there were some across his back too. The blonde wasn't even twitching from the pressure Lewis was putting on is injuries.
He cursed softly, this was bad. Very, very bad.
The part of him that still cared for Arthur as a friend panicked. He had to get Arthur back to the cabin, before he bled out or froze to death.
One of his Deadbeats chirred curiously, tugging at it's mental connection to him like a child tugging at an adult's sleeve, drawing his gaze from his friend's unresponsive face to look at whatever had gotten it's attention.
And he felt himself still.
Lewis had long since come to the conclusion Arthur had kept things from himself and Vivi. Before his death, he'd never really thought much of it, believing everyone was entitled to their secrets and their privacy. The same still held (mostly) true for him after death. But because of said incident, he had become far more aware of things that were hidden.
Death had open his vision in a manner not unlike removing sunglasses from someone's face. You could see everything, but at the edges of your vision, you could see there was more to the world than what was in front of you. But when you turned to look, your view didn't really change. The world hadn't really changed from how it had been prior, but it had become sharper to his sight, clearer. Letting him see details that he couldn't have seen before.
He had realized that Arthur was keeping something pretty big from them, but it hadn't seemed relevant to his death so he hadn't bothered looking into it. He'd deemed it unimportant, or something he didn't need to forcefully push his way into. He knew it had had something to do with the way Arthur looked or felt because of the veil he'd seen when they'd all finally reunited. But he had been sure that the way Arthur looked hadn't connected to why the blonde had killed him. It had seemed like a simple little side note.
But that didn't stop the stunned disbelief of seeing one of his Deadbeats playing with the end of a brown and yellow snake tail. A tail that was easily several meters long. A tail that was very obviously attached to Arthur, growing out where his legs should have been.
He was fairly certain his mind had pulled up the Blue-Screen-of-Death at the sight.
Mystery was quick to headbutt him in the side with a snarl, bringing him back to the present and kicking his mind back into gear.
The not-dog was giving him a look. His pretty-much-patented “Freak out later, we have more important things” look. It just further cemented why Arthur always treated Mystery like a person instead of an animal. He was just too smart and expressive to be normal.
He quickly shifted one arm under Arthur's- under where Arthur's knees should have been, and carefully lifted the blonde up, his grip tighter than it probably needed to be. The mechanic wasn't heavy per-say, but the long tail made balancing his weight awkward (also those scales were cold, and he didn't think that was a good thing). One of his Beats had the bright idea of wrapping the tail around Lewis' shoulders, making so that it wasn't dragging in the snow or getting caught in stray branches (Tree, bush, or other), but it wasn't very helpful over all.
Getting back to the cabin was slower than Lewis' would have liked (due to the cold, the snow, and him juggling Arthur's awkward weight), but he was just glad the thing that attacked them hadn't come back for a second round. Getting inside had held him up for a moment but his little beats easily opened the door for him, once he realized his hands were too full of unconscious mechanic to open it himself.
“Vivi! I found them! But you're gonna need to take a look at Arthur!” 'Because I sure don't know what to think of this...' He heard a thud from the second floor, followed by the scrambling foot steps of someone racing down the hall towards the stairs. He carefully laid Arthur out on the couch, fumbling slightly to get the long tail off his shoulders and trying to figure out what would qualify as “comfortable” for the other, before just draping said tail over one armrest and curling it around the back of the couch.
Arthur hadn't stirred in the slightest throughout the trip, and it was really starting to make him worry.
“Holy Cheese!” Lewis looked back to see Vivi at the bottom of the stairs, staring wide-eyed at at Arthur. More specifically the tail attached to him. “What on earth happened to him?” Lewis didn't know what to tell her.
Mystery let out an aggravated bark, making the girl and ghost jump at the sudden noise. Lewis gave his head a shake, bringing himself back to the task at hand.
Arthur was still hurt, still bleeding where he lay. They needed to handle that first. He stated as much to Vivi, who tore off to grab the med-kit they brought with them.
Arthur's shirt, jacket, and prosthetic were carefully removed, Lewis taking a moment to cover the blonde's waist from Vivi's sight (He had no idea if there was anything there, but he would still respect Arthur's modesty in front others). And when the girl returned with the supplies, his wounds were quickly swathed in medicine, gauze and bandages.
Thankfully, it seemed the cuts weren't as deep as he feared, most of them shallow and easy to clean and dress. They were still bad though, and it would takes a couple weeks before he fully recovered, Lewis was sure of that. They'd made sure to check the blonde's head too, since he had been knocked out (There was a lump, but it didn't look too bad).
But now came the hard part, figuring out what happened to Arthur to change him like this. After all, humans didn't randomly change into half-snake people from being bashed upside the head. That just wasn't natural.
Lewis stared down at the unconscious blonde, trying to puzzle out how this was even possible when he finally noticed something he hadn't before.
“The veil's gone...” he muttered. He had been so distracted by the state the blonde was in that he hadn't even noticed that his ever-present veil was no longer there.
“Veil? What do you mean?” He looked back at Vivi, trying to figure out how to explain it. Maybe it was something she could explain?
So he did. He explained the energy he had always seen wrapped around Arthur (he didn't bring up the one around Mystery. He had a feeling that would anger the not-dog and he didn't want that), the way it originated from his chest and wrapped around him from there, how it was kind of warm yet the blonde had never said anything about feeling too hot.
He watched Vivi chew her lip thoughtfully.
“I remember one case I had gone alone for,” she said slowly, carefully pulling at her memories as she spoke. “It had been while Arthur was still getting his prosthetic, a minor one about someone seeing something weird, nothing harmful, just odd. I found a cryptid was using a cave near town as a hiding spot, because she was having trouble with staying in her human form.
“She told me that some cryptids could take human forms on their own, but others like her needed a help staying in that form. They carried special talismans with them that helped them stay human even when they lost their concentration. She had lost her's and was trying to find it again. I helped her figure out where it went, but she made me promise not to tell anyone about her unless it was really important. She said they didn't like being revealed, because a lot of people didn't like folks who weren't human.” She straightened up, her expression firm, with an undercurrent of realization.
“Arthur- Arthur must be like that too. He must've had a talisman to stay human, and lost it when that monster attacked him.”
Lewis felt a small flicker of worry in his chest, a hand clenching on the back of the couch. Discovering what that veil was answered some of his questions, but now what?
If Arthur wasn't actually human, how could they heal him? What if he actually needed some kind of special medicine that they didn't know about? Was the stuff they used going to work? And why wasn't he waking up?!
Lewis' wanted to beat his head against something in frustration (preferably a wall).
Vivi crouched down by Arthur's tail, resting a hand over the scaly form as she examined it.
“Heat, we need to get him warm.” Her tone was firm, and she nodded in that self-assured way of hers. She lightly patted it as she continued. “This is a snake tail. Snakes, like most reptiles, are cold-blooded animals. Meaning they can't generate their own body heat. This is just a guess, but I bet Arthur can't either. You said the veil was warm, right?”
Lewis nodded.
“Then I bet it was making his body warm enough to keep working. Snakes and other reptiles go into hibernation when the temperature drops, that's why people never see them in cold climates or during winter.”
“So the cold's basically sent him into a coma, and he won't wake up until he's warm again.” Lewis summarized. Vivi nodded, confirming it.
It was still worrying, but at least they now had some idea of what was going on and what to do. His hand reached up to rub at the back of his neck (a habit from when he was alive), only to drop it to his side. They had work to do.
“Alright then, I'll get a fire started. Why don't you see if you can find a clean shirt or a sweater and some blankets for Arthur?” He paused. “Actually, don't we have a bunch of electric blankets in the van? I'll send some Deadbeats to get those.”

Jimin is a pretty bOY
Tumblr media
This is a continuation of our discussion on my last post. Thanks for sharing your thoughts with me, I think I agree with all of it.
Not sure how I feel about the calling eachother out bit or near scolding of others in the comments. Please let's be welcoming and respectful of others's thoughts regardless of whether or not we agree with it. It's ok to hold diverse views. We do after all come from different backgrounds and have accumulated different experiences and I think it plays out in how we see things. Everyone's opinion is valid. Plus, I purple yall.
Now, do I think he is trying to pack on muscles........? Yes. He said so himself in Festa when he said he would rush to the mirror when he thought he had gained some muscle only to find out his biceps looks like a muscled kindergartner.
He also said lately he's into exercising and staying in shape which is true because for quite sometime now since early this year he has been talking about how "weak" he is in their Vlives and have even given instances of him not being able to do certain things- certian simple and easy tasks- which is typical of him I'd say. He's always talking about how "weak" he is especially around JK and juxtaposing that with "but JK is so strong" which I'm sorry but I have to smirk at right now cos it's such a typical gay pick me simp thing to do. We've all been there.
Do I think he's trying to be a muscle bunny or revert back to his body shape around debut? Absolutely not. But I do think he is straddling the line of toxic masculinity which is what the conversation is about.
I don't think there's anything wrong with wanting to stay in shape or even enjoying work outs. Last night I ran downstairs because I had left my stew on the stove and now this morning I called renew my gym membership because I discovered running can be actually fun to do... No. No it's not. The gym instructor would have to come for me kicking and screaming.
RM have said even though JM looks skinny and fragile he is one of the strongest within the group. Besides, this is not the first time he's expressed interest in working out and building his body- hello, on Era?
I remember people complaining he looked too buffed up in that period on SNS and PJMs quickly jumping in to clear the searches for it. The choreo for On required agility and endurance and required the members- not just JM build up some definition in their muscles.
We've seen them go through all that. So it's not simply a matter of black and white staying in shape or doing it because he feels pressured to do so. Especially, when you consider that he's undertaken some pretty unhealthy measures in the past in attempts to lose weight or soften out his body post these muscle building, weight gaining periods and we've always chalked it up to his dance and how as a contemporary dancer he has to look a certain way or this or that to try to justify and make sense of it. Next you, know there are six chapters of break the silence of him talking about all the dark places he's been, the pressures to look his best for his fans or for his job and all these other painful stories he's shared with us over the years. And it's like, but why? Why do this to yourself?
I'll never forget the look he gave JK when JK was talking about wanting to build muscles in one of the interviews for the promotion of Be- I think I made a post on it. When JK noticed JMs disapproving glare he backtracked saying he would want to stay skinny after gaining all that muscles.
I mean if I'm to be honest, he was bound to crack at one point. The signs were there being surrounded by all these men who adhere to the traditional aesthetics of a masculine body- from Namjoon to Taehyung.
I wish y'all will steer the conversation in this direction and make it more about gender norms and expressions and breaking stereotypes and diversity in the body aesthetics of men.
Jimin is a man too. He just isn't what people traditionally will label masculine. Androgynous is more an apt word in my opinion. How many times have I said, I think Jungkook hetero passes because his body aesthetics is quintessentially what most associates with a masculine man?
Breaking gender barriers is not just about embracing feminine apparels- that teeters on cross dressing quite frankly and can be a bit performative and baity. Then you have to consider their culture in itself has an inherent pro gender diversity feel to it.
Now, let me explain my problem with the Klout ad campaign a little bit.

Do you see how Tae stands out? And I'm not saying this to fuel the "Tae was their fav" debacle. It's the 007 feel... I'll explain in a bit.
Most often, alcohol advertisers as well as most advertisements intended to sell to men often try to appeal to men's internalized ideals of masculinity or try to shape and define what a man or masculinity should look like. These ideals are so often toxic and detrimental to men and mostly women too.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Take a look at these ads for example. All I had to do was google search ads for men.
Real men drink milk and look at the image they present as real men. This blatantly implies if you don't look like this, if you are not a strong cliff climbing man with abs you are not a real man.
The second image is subtle. I call it the 007 slash Kingsmen-esque ideals of masculinity. It portrays men as sexy cool badass- works out but isn't too buff, filthy rich or middle class, wears Rolex, designer clothes, is kind but has a mean exterior and is every 13 year old wattpad girls's dream of a man. In fiction, you see this kind of masculinity in characters such as Edward cullens to Christian Grey. And a lot of ads for men alternate between these two ideals of masculinity.
Do you see how they modeled Taehyung in these ads after this kind of masctheme? Tae looks the same in almost all the ads. 007 sexy cool badass.
Now, I may not be a makeup beauty guru or MUA or whatever, but one thing I've picked up on especially when it comes to makeup for men- BTS and Kpop idols mostly is that, they soften out the harsh features on their faces and make them appear more androgynous or effeminate to suit the Kpop look and they ditch it entirely in different settings.
So for instance, Tae and Kookie's natural hawkish eyebrows tend to get softened around the arch and edges- don't know how the fuck they do that- but it appears less in your face intense most times when they wear make up in kpop related contents.
However, in certain other contents that lean towards a certain gender theme those features are emphasized. Not to say hawkish features are masculine features. Just saying in men, Kpop idols, my observation is they soften those features out with makeup or surgery.
Now, take a look at JM in these ads and look at everything from his posture, make up, hairstyle and brows. It's as if someone took an eraser to his androgynousity and erased his feminine side. Take a look at his photo above and compare it to the ads.
I am not a man. But I feel the gender look they went for, intended to appeal to men, tapped into a rather outdated stereotype of what man and masculinity should look like.
What is a man?
What should a man look like?
What aesthetics of masculinity is Jimin gravitating towards now? And I'm not talking clothes, I'm talking the expression of his gender. Time and again, he's talked about how looking a certain way made him uncomfortable in the past because he was constantly fighting his feminine side. He is androgynous. Sometimes he leans more into his feminine side. Other times he leans more into his masculine side but this is the only time he's leaning into his masculinity that makes me uncomfortable to watch because like I said it bothers on toxic masculinity.
He's said whoever he was, the version fighting to look masculine, that wasn't him. So forgive me if I worry whenever i see him suppressing his feminine side and acting like 'one of the boys.' Him staying in shape is not synonymous with him erasing a valid part of himself or suppressing it. He can stay in shape, celebrate his masculinity and still be FILTER.
What I'm saying is, this not a conversation about him exercising. This is a conversation about an ad erasing his feminine side and boxing him into a narrow expression of his gender and how that might be affecting his view of himself especially in the way he's been gravitating towards a certain masculine aesthetics and how that could be toxic.
Tae has said the same thing and BTS have agreed the JM as of 2019 was the real JM according to them.They said he was that way- suppressing his feminine side, because there weren't much songs and choreos that suited him and so he had had to bend himself to fit with the others.
And so when I see him leaning a certain way I tend to wonder if his exterior environment is playing a role in that. I hope you can understand that.
He is a contemporary dancer and strength and flexibility are prerequisites for his craft. The company go out of their way to incorporate contemporary dance in their choreos for JM's sake which helps solve that problem of him trying too hard to look a certain way.
May be I'm projecting. May be my little brother is effeminate and I've always recommended Jimin as a role for him to tell him not to try to look different just because other boys look different. May be I've seen him try one too many times to kill himself in the gym trying to build on muscles and getting frustrated with himself because he ends up looking like someone else. You can't gym the queerness away. Society will never let you be who you want to be so you might as well flip it the middle finger.
These boys are being shaped by their environment. I hate to say this but the environment they are in isn't exactly progressive and the longer they stay in there cut off from the outside world...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Flying out helps. Meeting different people and being exposed to different cultures and conversations on gender expression helps.
Anywho, these are just concerns I have. Will have them till I see that's not where he is headed towards. But let's not act like these ad campaigns do not and can not psychologically impact these boys especially as these advertisers are not looking to tap into their own definition of gender and masculinity but shape it and redefine it to appeal to the demographic they intend to market to.
I think this is just a grey area for me. Rather than try to change JM to look a certain way in order to sell alcohol. I think the ground breaking thing would be to have a man who looks like JM show us how someone like him would sell a can of drink. I think that would be revolutionary.
Signed,
GOLDY

Ugh. Kingsmen goes on again with the “Kaiser was a mad warmonger who wanted and started the war almost all by himself” myth. I didn’t mind the movie making the three royal cousins all the same age to have them playing as children for dramatic and comedic effect but the German villainy cliche was disappointing. Not surprising, mind you, just disappointing. Unlike WWII, WWI was not completely the Germans’ fault.
-Also, ignoring the Nicky-Willy correspondence to make it seem as if Tsar Nicholas and Kaiser Wilhelm hadn’t cared nor tried to stop the war. I am obviously not saying they did nearly enough or everything they could have but they were not indifferent buffoons either. They literally have a fictional secret society made up of rich war profiteers in the freaking movie as the villain, why the hell is it not used more to explain the origins of the war?
-And of course only the English and their monarch are super innocent angels here because of course they are. The historically accurate British concentration camps in South Africa at the beginning of the movie were just an “opsie” footnote.
-Also, Rasputin tried to warn the Tsar AGAINST that awful shitstorm of a war. He helped the poor and Jewish people, who were awfully oppressed in the Russian Empire. Other than loving to fuck, which might have even been greatly exaggerated according to some historians, he was a generally decent guy. But I guess he looks creepy or whatever and makes for a good villain so who cares if it would have been way cooler to subvert the audience’s expectations with a historically accurate twist.
Again, disappointed but not surprised.
I am only halfway through so I might be pleasantly surprised in the end.
-Also, fuck them if they don’t use their goofy historically inaccurate mumbo jumbo to make it so the ninja Kingsmen save the Romanov children from being murdered in the end, I swear…. like, I doubt it but if you are going to be historically inaccurate you should use your historical inaccuracy for good (Don’t mind me I am just an OTMAA fan, I doubt they are going to appear much in the movie anyway but still, I am salty already about the fact their fates won’t be mentioned).
Loving the concept and the aesthetics though. A Kingsmen movie set in WWI? Sign me up. The two father and son characters are likeable so far as well.
Edit: Oh, so now the villains are villains for trying to take Russia out of the war? A poor country who had lost thousands of soldiers and was barely prepared for that carnage? Seriously? Who wrote this, early 20th century “Rasputin and the Empress are lovers and German spies!!!” Russian yellow press propagandists? Also, the Russians literally marched for bread and peace during the February revolution, now they are coincidentally on the side of the villains without meaning to or what? Such a bad message in my opinion…
On the other hand, very good concept with the father not wanting his son to go to war because he is traumatized by it. Just subtle criticism of colonialism but something is something. Already invested in this.
Too bad so far they haven’t committed enough to the pacifist message even though WWI movies are a perfect opportunity to do so. Like seriously, it is all about ENGLAND and how it is bad for Russia to be out of the war because it affects ENGLAND negatively and who cares about the Russian peasants dying I guess because the Scottish villain hates ENGLAND and only wants to destroy ENGLAND. This when the first victims of the war were the Serbians. I think it would have made more sense if the villain had been trying to destroy all European powers, and even going with the “sympathetic villain” angle this would have made sense since Russia, England, France, Austro-Hungary and Germany all held colonies or at least oppressed people of other ethnicities. It would make sense that someone who has been a victim of imperialism would want to destroy all nations involved in it even if by immoral means such as war that kills common people and not the actual culprits. Another option would be putting emphasis on how much money arms’ dealers with zero allegiances make during wartime and how sometimes they pull strings in the government or influence the public in favor of war for this very reason.
This, however, is far too complex and wouldn’t allow the writers to single out Germany as the sole villain or use their accents for villainous comedic relief so I guess not…
Edit 2: And of course, the absolute myth that the Tsar was even considering pulling out of the war *eye rolls* Tsar Nicholas believed in the allied cause wholeheartedly. He was a honorable fool.  Almost real life’s version of Ned Stark. Often said to have been a good man but a bad leader.  He would have never done that.
"Reality is more interesting than fiction" is a bullshit lie repeated by many angry historians whenever they review historically inaccurate movies or series, but in this case it might very well be true. Alexei's very real hemophilia and the fascinating mystery of how Rasputin managed to either heal his attacks or convince Alexandra he was capable of doing so is replaced in this movie with Rasputin poisoning the poor child on purpose to "evily" *checks notes* convince Nicholas to pull Russia out of a bloody war that had little to do with Russia, was being fought for typical "muh honor" reasons, had already killed thousands of peasant and working class Russian soldiers, and would soon turn the nation into a starving chaotic mess in part due to the fact its transportation system failed because of the ongoing conflict. Too ridiculous to bear.
A little side note away from the main topic but after this I don’t want more pop historians or college dissertations saying that Alexei “muh unfairly received much more attention than his poor sidelined-by-history female sisters who are the only ones truly in need of having their stories told!!” Like seriously, the poor kid was such a kind soul, especially later in life, but most only know him for being sick and “causing” the revolution almost all by himself with his illness (Which is of course simplistic and dumb), having beautiful and much more talked about older sisters, being a plot device in pieces of fiction such as this, and being spoilt and bratty as a small child, something thousands of children as well as his much more popular sister Anastasia also were without being villainized or sidelined for it.  Being reduced to your chronic illness and even then having the effects it had on yourself ignored and instead having everyone focus on how it made everything bad for OTHER people by historians is hardly “receiving attention” or “having your story told”.  They ALL should have their stories told thank you very much.
Ok, end of side note.
Of fucking course they are not going to mention how Saint England, the hero of this story, refused the Tsar and his family assylum after the revolution despite him having been a faithful and committed ally to England throughout the entire war who even refused a separate peace with Germany because that would not have been "honorable" without the English being involved. The English pretty much used him and his nation for man power and then abandoned him and labeled him a "weak" leader once he was no longer useful.
Of course they are not going to mention Germany's peace offers. Did they have some harsh conditions? Sure, the Germans were as stubburn and guilty and full of shit. Could it have been worth it to give those peace offers a chance so that the war had been cut short and thousands of lives spared? I don't know. Fucking maybe.
Also, it is funny because there is a conspiracy theory that says the English intelligence did indeed have something to do with Rasputin's murder because they feared he would try to convince the Tsar to pull out of the war. But I guess here they are the heroes for doing so. So much for an anti-war movie.
Also 2. Lenin was the one who in fact did everything he could to take Russia out of the war, helped by the Germans, who British writers love to make villains of, AND he was an even more morally dubious character than Rasputin. But he is also loved even today and it would have been far too controversial to make him a villain (And *cough* *cough* he was not "scary" looking enough) so I bet the writers didn't DARE to go there.
I beg you writers, if you want villains with creepy German accents for your goofy spy action movies, please, please, set your movie in WWII or at least in Belgium or German South West Africa. Very few people know about the Herero genocide by the German colonialists.
Edit 3: Also, I know what you are thinking. No, I don't care this is a goofy Kingsmen action movie that is not trying to be serious nor historically accurate. I know they are mainly trying to be entertaining. They could have been that AND chosen better WHERE to place the inaccuracies and creative liberties to make for a better story. Just as goofy and with as many unrealistic action sequences or unlikely scenes where the main characters meet real historical ones, which I love, but with more substance and a better message. This just doesn't do it for me for reasons already mentioned, and it is not like the moviemakers were not to some degree trying to have substance. The main characters dig at imperialism, greed and its role in war is hinted at, etc. But it is not enough, it is so sloppily and half-way done I would have preferred for the movie to be a straight up comedy or parody, which it wasn't, it simply wasn't because there were themes hidden in there that the writers didn't fully commit to because the plot just didn't help.
Edit 4: That Rasputin scene was funny and creepy in a good way, I don't doubt he was an unsettling individual to be around even in real life. Too bad the set up was dumb as hell. The "heroes" being "heroes" for trying to murder a man who is trying to stop the war (I know he did more than that and his objectives are others here in the movie but you get what I mean, the message is bad, stupid and it is very disturbing the writers chose this plot path considering the very real theory that exists involving the British intelligence in Rasputin's murder).
I am a sucker so loved the fight choreography though, it was unbelievable and AMAZING, and the concern the son had for his almost murdered father was moving. I really do dig the characters. This review is me basically whining about the movie's wasted potential.
Edit 5: Ok, spoke too early. There is Lenin, omg this is so goofy lol.
Edit 6: It rubs me the wrong way how they talk about "saving lives" when literally all they are doing is either pulling more countries into the war or stopping others from leaving that mess. That is literally all they are doing. Helping win the war? Sure they are! Saving lives? That is VERY debatable. Where are the peace negotiations? Where are the actual attempts to infiltrate the Germans and convince them, to ask them for a cease fire? Where is the Red Cross work the main character did at the beginning of the movie? This is what I don't like about this movie. The Kingsmen are supposedly the first independant intelligence agency. Why the hell then are all their actions in service of the government? I get still taking into account England's interests before everything, that is their country after all, but for a suposedly independant organization they sure don't think outside the box nor do anything different from what other agencies would.
The worst part is the inconsistent anti war montage of Conrad training for the army. What is the point of that if they have already established the Kingsmen are doing nothing for peace negotiations and that the only way for the war to stop is for the allies to win?
Also, as a Mexican, the drama of the Zimmermann telegram scene makes me laugh out loud because we were in the middle of a Civil War back then, we were so not a threat to the United States lol.
Edit 7: Nice action scenes. Good. Stick to that lol.
Also, good on them for showing the side effects of war. Conrad, baby :(
Edit 8: Super spoiler ahead. More spoilery than all the spoilers I have already given lol.
Wow, they actually made one of the main characters die. Heartbreaking and not at all what I wanted for the character, who had potential, but all things considered, the only brave and realistic choice the movie has made so far.
The father's reaction was sad as well.
Still annoyed by the mixed messages. There is no glory in war they say, except all the main characters have tried to do is win, not stop the war by trying any means at hand, which includes working on peace offers.
Edit 9: No way Lenin himself is the one who makes Nicholas abdicate. This is "History: Youtube comment version."
It is like they are trying to be historically inaccurate on purpose at this point, and not because it serves an important purpose in the story, whether dramatically or comedically, but because it makes it simpler. Why not have a character briefly explain what actually happened in Russia then? How there were food shortages and riots, Nicholas's train was stopped by the generals who didn't want him anymore, the Provisional Government was formed and fell in less than a year when Lenin took power during a coup, etc. I will say it again, this movie is so goofy, and I know it was realistic and portrayed the horrors of war accurately, but after Conrad's death the heart of the movie, which was the father-son relationship, is gone. I don't really look forward to seeing what happens next but I will do it because I hate leaving movies unfinished.
Edit 10: This movie should be called: "American interventionism is good, actually".
Edit 11: More action scenes, sniper girl and machete action guy, yay! STICK TO THAT!!
Edit 12: And we are on to the villain reveal, which is meh. Generic but not bad. Would have been so much more satisfying in a better movie.
Edit 13: In the end the villain is killed by the main character, which mind you, I don't care about those stupid "If you kill murderers, torturers and abusers then you are just like them" bullshit kid's show sermons, but in this movie they made it a clear attack against pacifism. So weird.
Yay, thousands of Americans are going to die now in a war thousands of miles away that has nothing to do with them, what a happy ending!! *eye rolls*
I am just so underwhelmed with this film, I guess it is because I expected so much from it. Silly me.
I recommend it though. Nice action. Wish it had remained a full action-comedy/parody but instead it is a film that doesn't even know what its fucking genre is. It is irreverent and pokes fun at history one second and then the next they are trying but failing to take imperialism and war profiteering seriously. They have scenes where they humanize the Germans and the main character criticizes the Versailles Treaty in the end but the thought of a mission to negotiate with or infiltrate them never even crossed the main characters' minds throughout the movie. In a serious historically accurate war movie I can see why not, but this is what a good use of artistic liberty would actually be.
The main kid just fucking dies and I understand now why I hate it so much other than the fact I generally hate main character deaths: This is not a serious WWI film. It can't freaking decide whether it wants to take the historical aspect of its plot seriously. This is supposed to be an action film with unrealistic yet satisfying battle scenes where the heroes always win, and it is most of the time, so why doesn't it go through with that promise? The death wouldn't have bothered me as much if they had also tried to be a serious historical movie that makes use of artistic license ONLY when it serves the story and not just as a "lol we are also a parody of WWI leaders btw" , but they didn't, because they didn't take the historical aspect seriously enough and so the tragic character death seems out of place, a freaking joke even at first, and almost a red herring in this goofy historically inaccurate unrealistic-action-sequences-packed movie where the Tsar, the Kaiser and the King are played by the same actor just for the lols.
Plus the father says there is no glory in war because his kid died and then the next second they are celebrating the fact American kids will die as well (yay?). Which one is it? The inaccuracies are there for no reason because most aren't even funny, honest mistakes, ~cough they aren't self indulgently used to save OTMAA cough~, or even serve a purpose in the story.
Someone needs to write a fix it fic because this had so much freaking potential. Conrad has to live though.

           Get to know the blogger!
Tumblr media
Can be used for RP and non-RP blogs to get to know a bit about the person behind the screen!
1. FIRST NAME: Josh
2. STRANGE FACT ABOUT YOURSELF: Uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh I’m one of the few people who enjoyed Phantom Menace? If only for the fight between Obi-Wan and Qui-Jon against Darth Maul. Iunno, what’s strange to one person might not be strange to another.
3. TOP THREE PHYSICAL THINGS YOU FIND ATTRACTIVE ON A PERSON: Boobs, butt, hips. ...What? I’m a guy, what do you expect from me?
4. A FOOD YOU COULD EAT FOREVER AND NOT GET BORED OF: Probably potatoes. Many, many ways to prepare them, my favourite being mashed.
5. A FOOD YOU HATE: Hmm. I’m not actually too picky, so this is kinda hard. I guess... peanuts? *shrug*
6. GUILTY PLEASURE: I mean, it feels kinda like it’d be cheating to say wearing my pajamas all day, since that’s what Amber put, so, uh... I dunno. My friends kinda got me out of calling stuff ‘guilty pleasures’ a while back, since if you enjoy something, you shouldn’t really feel guilty about it.
7. WHAT DO YOU SLEEP IN: Pajamas. Sometimes a t-shirt and boxer shorts if it’s hot.
8. SERIOUS RELATIONSHIPS OR FLINGS: Considering I’ve never really had any? Ehh, probably serious, but I guess I wouldn’t be opposed to flings.
9. IF YOU COULD GO BACK IN THE PAST AND CHANGE ONE THING ABOUT YOUR LIFE, WOULD YOU AND WHAT WOULD IT BE: Not dropping out of school when I was 12 due to bullying and depression would be a good start.
10. ARE YOU AN AFFECTIONATE PERSON: Don’t have many people to show my affection to, but yeah, if I know you well enough, you’re getting hugs whenever I see you.
11. A MOVIE YOU COULD WATCH OVER AND OVER AGAIN: Hm. Probably the first Avengers film, Spider-Man Homecoming and Far From Home. Either of the Kingsmen movies, or Skyfall.
12. FAVOURITE BOOK: Hmmmmmmmmmmmm. I have many, many books. I guess my favourite ones would be the ‘Horrible Science’ books, since I learnt a lot from them. I’m a nerd like that.
13. YOU HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO KEEP ANY ANIMAL AS A PET, WHAT DO YOU CHOOSE: I mean, I have cats. What other animal would I want?
14. TOP FIVE FICTIONAL SHIPS [IF YOU ARE AN RP BLOG, YOU CAN USE YOUR OWN SHIPS AS WELL]: I don’t actually go for ships all that often? Just... I dunno. A lot of ships are either canon, in which case they can be a bit boring to have as a fave ship... or are fan pairings, and I disagree with, like, 99% of them, whether I just don’t think the characters go well together (HermionexDraco, for example) or they’re just... really problematic (Harry/Snape, AxelxRoxas anyone?) so... eh. I’m just gonna... not pick any.
15. PIE OR CAKE: Neither. I do like pie, but my Dad buys them so often I’m kinda sick of them.
16. FAVORITE SCENT: Lavender.
17. CELEBRITY CRUSH: Don’t really have one. I guess maybe Christina Hendricks? *shrug*
18. IF YOU COULD TRAVEL ANYWHERE, WHERE WOULD YOU GO: Canada, probably.
19. INTROVERT OR EXTROVERT: Mayor introvert. Going outside? no thanks.
20. DO YOU SCARE EASILY: I used to be really easy to scare, which led to me hating horror. Nowadays I’m less easy to scare... still hate horror though. Especially games like ‘Five Nights At Freddy’s’. No, FNAF, jumpscares don’t make your game scary, it’s just a cheap substitute for actual horror.
21. IPHONE OR ANDROID: I’m pretty sure my phone predates both iPhone and Android. Well... maybe not, but it’s pretty damn basic.
22. DO YOU PLAY ANY VIDEO GAMES: Yep! Currently working my way through Octopath Traveller!
23. DREAM JOB: Voice actor.
24. WHAT WOULD YOU DO WITH A MILLION DOLLARS: Probably use half of it for immediate stuff and to give to my family, and then invest the rest in something. Wouldn’t necessarily have to be anything that’d have a super high return, just something that’d be a safe bet.
25. FICTIONAL CHARACTER YOU HATE: Oooh boy, uuhhh... see, it’s tough, because most characters there is at least SOMETHING I like about them that stops me from flat-out hating them. I’m not very fond of Lexaeus, I guess, but we don’t really get much characterisation for him other than he’s strong and doesn’t talk that much. For characters I outright HATE though... none are really coming to mind. I mean, even the culprits in every Phoenix Wright case, they either don’t make enough of an impact for me to hate them, or they have some quirk that makes me like them. I guess Redd White, though his high and mighty attitude is fun to break.
26. FANDOM THAT YOU WERE ONCE A PART OF BUT AREN’T ANY LONGER: I don’t really tend to go for fandom stuff anymore, since they’re generally filled with drama and people arguing over ships, so... yeah.
tagged by: A bunch of nerds, but I guess specifically @twinfoxtails tagging: Do it if you want

HEADCANON: Ricks that have eluded the citadel and Ricks’ from the other side of Finite curve.
Ritas are female Ricks : Classy queen science bitch. Dresses a bit like Rick only: wears pearl earring, and a pearl necklace, has a grey conservative bob, also no unibrow (that’s why they made waxing dear) Cold, tough as nails, classy and hardly ever seen without her martini or wine glass. She had to be tough because she was woman in the STEM field at a time when women has their research stolen by their male colleagues or discredited and stolen. That never happened to her, although it cost her career to the point where she end up formally leaving the field altogether. Unlike Rick, she doesn’t belch,  or fart  even if she’s three sheets to the wind. Has not joined the citadel  of Ritas which she refers to as ‘the sewing circle’. Sounds like Jessica Walter
Morticia ‘Morti’ Sanchez: a quiet unassuming, aspie nerd girl, suffers from anxiety. Just wants to write & read fan fiction and be left alone to be nerdy and crush on girls. Sadly, her Grandma keeps dragging her on these fucking adventures.
~~~~~
Chef Rick is a bit of combo or Anthony Bourdain (SUCKIT) and Alton Brown, his globally inspired fusion molecular gastronomy cuisine  have won him tons of awards, including a James Beard and piles of money. Also he totally has show where he travels around the world with his reluctant grandkids introducing them to new and frightening (For a easterner) foods. He’s one a few Chef Ricks’ that’s avoided the citadel, mostly cuz he keeps his knives sharp & handy.
UK  born Rick  is Glaswegian, and moved down from Glasgow(?) live with his daughter, her British husband, grandkids and cuz they live in a semi-detached house has to use his shed on his allotment as a workshop. (You can totally have Peter Capaldi to voice or play him now).Possibly worked for M1-5 or the Kingsmen?
Gay Dragqueen Rick’s Drag name is K-laxia Rixxvaganza, No one is more fishy, tucks better, or brings the realness like this queen. Also no one is a bigger bitch.
Gem Rick looks female and is a blue quartz that was made for an extremely limited time. Any remaining Blue quartz’s have portal led off home world to the farthest reaches of the universe, possibly never to return.
Gem Morty is Nacre otherwise known as Mother of Pearl. low quality servant gem, who is as neurotic as dozen Pearls. Often seen in the company of Blue Quartz’s
Pony Rick (of the MLP universe) is called unicorn called Thinky Booze, who currently resides in the deepest, darkest, recesses of Princess’s Celestia’s dungeons and continues to resist any and all forms rehabilitation. His cutie mark is flask.
Pony Morty is well just Morty… in pony form? Currently is wondering why Grandpa Thinky disappeared.
Cat Rick is known as Carl in most parts of the multi-verse and is a thin, white cat with one yellow eye and one blue*, drools when happy, steals, scratches, bites, highly intelligent gives no shits and does SHIT ON THE FLOOR (clean my litterbox BIIIITCHES!) Also is the best hunter of all vermin, birds and brings down bigger prey. Indoor-Outdoor Cat  because you try and see if you can keep version of Rick locked up. Usually dumps the mutilated remains of his prey  at his owner’s feet, in smug fashion.
Dog Rick was euthanized for aggressiveness after being dumped at a shelter.
Dog Morty has lived a long wonderful fulfilling life.
Parrot Rick is African Grey, and despite knowing more words then any other bird even of his very intelligent breed, mostly says: FUCK YOU! and screeches at 4 am.  Has outlived his first owner and now lives with owner’s daughter.
*Expect on Discworld he’s called Greebo there.
By now you’ve heard that Castalia House completed yet another hugely successful crowdfunding campaign.  It’s just the latest feather in the cap for the publishing house that’s going to need a bigger hat before long.  On the surface it looks like just another title – a modern day adventurer taking on a vast and shadowy criminal conspiracy.  Look a little deeper though, and you’ll see that this project represents something far more profound.  I think – and this may just be wishful thinking – but I believe Alt*Hero: Q represents the first of a new kind of espionage tale, and that it will spawn a host of similar titles.
Infogalactic reports that spy fiction:
emerged in the early twentieth century, inspired by rivalries and intrigues between the major powers, and the establishment of modern intelligence agencies.
Checkpoint Charlie – the Gate in the Iron Curtain
That’s a pretty narrow definition.  For the sake of this analysis, we’re going to consider espionage tales to include any story that revolves around small and dedicated heroes investigating large and powerful organizations that operate in the shadows.  There’s a natural progression of this broader definition that allows the genre to evolve and change as the geo-political and economic conditions change.  And it’s that malleable factor that has made the genre so robust over the years.  Let’s look at how it has changed since the end of World War Two, and you’ll quickly see where the genre is headed and why Alt*Hero: Q represents the next phase in the genre’s evolution.
  The espionage genre really took off during the Cold War, which allowed for the white hat/black hat stories in which the various western powers faced off against the evil forces of the Warsaw Pact.  When the Berlin Wall came crashing down under the weight of the inevitable failures of communism, the genre trundled along with a new set of villains.  The most popular of the villains was large mega-corporations led by megalomaniacal CEOs, but mileage was also wrung out of stories with large drug cartels, with no clear cut bad guys, or stories in which the good guys were painted as bad because Reagan amirite?
And then came the X-Files.
A little heralded monster of the week show that featured aliens and Men In Black, The X-Files found that the monolithic evil of communist governments could be easily replaced by the monolithic evil of small, shadowy conspiracies within the American government.  The fall of the Soviets left a vacancy for distrust that the US Federal Government seemed all to eager to fill.  Rumors of the US Federal Government hiding aliens in military warehouses, or experimenting on citizens with mind-altering drugs without their knowledge, or trapping and studying urban myths like bigfoot or the Chupacabra had long circulated through the underbelly of the American culture.  Controversial government attacks on citizens such as the bombing of the Philadelphia MOVE commune, the shootings at Ruby Ridge, and the Waco massacre added more grist to the mill, as did the increasing number of airline tragedies whose coverage was plagued by inconsistencies.  Everything discussed in hushed tones on late night AM radio became fodder.  Add to that the ongoing military actions in the Middle-East with no clear end and no clear objectives, and it is no wonder the mood of the country and the interests of media consumers had shifted.
Instead of good Us versus evil Them, film viewers and TV watchers flocked to stories about good men struggling to push back against the shadows inherent in their own governments.  Jack Bauer in 24, Michel Westin in Burn Notice, even Law and Order couldn’t resist cashing in on the craze with several episodes touching on or diving head first into conspiracy territory – every show in the series has brought in resident conspiracy expert Detective John Munch.  They sold, so they got made.
And then came 9/11.
With this titanic shift in the public mood and the groundswell of public patriotism that followed, blaming the government fell out of fashion for a time.  Those who asked awkward questions about the events of that fateful day were mocked, regardless of whether they delved too deep into the men who conducted or caused the attacks Twin Towers or those who merely capitalized on it.  Coupled with a vicious backlash against any hint that the culture that funded and inspired the 9/11 attacks might have anything to do with them, the espionage genre turned into a schizophrenic mess that lingers even to this very day.  Amazon’s Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan takes the huge risk of showing no-fooling evil middle-eastern terrorists, but bends over backwards to assure the viewers that Muslims are good Americans and even the worst terrorist is really a victim of white cisheteropatriarchy.
For a time the joke became that literal Nazis were the only allowable villains in cinema any more.  A few abortive attempts were made to anoint large corporations or international financiers as the appropriate dark and powerful menace, but those rang a little too close to the truth for the large corporations and international financiers who fund big budget productions to continue very far down that road.  Films such as The Kingsmen and FX’s show Archer posited worlds where private intel companies vied with each other while the world continued along its merry way, unaware of the high stakes games played in dark alleys and elegant restaurants all around them.  Each film and each show became an island unto itself, forced to rebuild the world in its own image and to laboriously communicate the complexities of the internal logic of the story.
The genre was tired.  Without the central focus of the Russkies or Men In Black or Global Corporations, the production of espionage stories tapered off.  No doubt you can name a few of the exceptions, but in general the genre was moribund.  It had no foundational culture on which to rest.  The only thing anyone really knew was that nobody really knew what was really going on in the halls of power.  With no clear cut villains and no clear cut heroes, what was the point?  You might as well just focus on the car crashes and shoot ’em ups and over the top spectacle, because the cloak and dagger stuff just didn’t mean anything any more.
And then came WikiLeaks.
And Fake News.
And Hilary’s emails.
And PizzaGate.
And President Donald Trump.
Suddenly a lot of thing that were not clear to anyone became very clear to everyone.  Yes, elections were rigged.  Yes, corporations couldn’t be trusted.  Yes, the Deep State existed.  Yes, the “objective” news lied to viewers on a regular basis.  Yes, a few lone actors could bring down powerful people.  Yes, the panopticon that so many feared had arrived, but it turned out the people most vulnerable to the power of universal oversight were those most likely to want to turn it on others.
The espionage genre had its new paradigm.  Lone agents, scattered researchers toiling away in anonymity, working to expose the nefarious deeds of bad actors installed at the highest levels of governments both national and supranational.  That story will resonate with the public, no matter how you dress it up, but it lacked a creative team with the talent and vision – and yes, the freedom from the tangled web of deceit that binds traditional publishers – to bring a story like that to the public.
If that’s the story the Legend Chuck Dixon brings us with Alt*Hero: Q, and so far nothing we’ve seen suggests otherwise, you can expect a raft of similar stories to follow in its wake.
Disclaimer:  The good folks at Castalia have been kind enough to allow me room on their blog to share my own thoughts on sf/f and popular entertainment.  I’ve had no direct involvement with the Alt*Hero: Q campaign other than as a fan and financial backer through the IGG campaign.
iUniverse’s Guy Franks tells us about new book, “A Midsummer Madness”
Veteran author Guy Franks discusses his new book, A Midsummer Madness, along with his literary interests, writing approach, and passion for baseball!
A Midsummer Madness was born out of my love for William Shakespeare and baseball. To me, the music of Shakespeare’s metered verse, his cutting wit, his insight into the human soul, pairs nicely with the perfect distances of baseball, with its theatrics and homespun wisdom. When I listen to Giants manager Bruce Bochy I hear Prospero. When Coriolanus offers his services to his enemy Aufidius it reminds me of Jeff Kent, the great Giants second baseman, choosing to sign with their archrival the Dodgers. The famous actress Tallulah Bankhead understood the parallel when she said, “There have only been two geniuses in the world — Willie Mays and Willie Shakespeare.”
  When I watch a game of baseball, preferably with a cold beer and a bag of salted peanuts, I see a Shakespearean play unfold before me. There is a beginning, a middle and an end, and it’s filled with great characters, surprises, and twists of fate. It can be a thrilling triumph like Henry the Fifth, a Comedy of Errors, or, depending on one’s fortunes in the bottom of the ninth, a tragedy like Julius Caesar. But comedy or tragedy, all the ingredients of any one of the Bard’s plays are there to enjoy on a baseball diamond. It was the great baseball writer Roger Kahn who first drew the analogy between a minor league ball club and an Elizabethan acting troupe traveling from town to town plying their trade. In A Midsummer Madness, I’ve attempted to take the great themes and elegant poetry of Shakespeare and blend them with the dirt and grass of baseball to make a savory tragic-comic stew spiced with music and wordplay.
  My stage is set in 1986 Connecticut during the great renaissance of minor league baseball, and my acting troupe is the New Britain Kingsmen of the Double-A Eastern League. The Kingsmen are managed by Shakespeare Louis Glover. “Shake” Glover is my focal point. As the Bard-quoting skipper of the Kingsmen, he is meant to embody the harmony that is Shakespeare and baseball. He’s an ex-ball player turned successful minor league manager, but he’s also Leontes in A Winter’s Tale, as well as Henry the Fourth with a little bit of Prospero thrown in from The Tempest. The story follows the Kingsmen from opening day to the championship game, and along the way I’ve woven in characters and subplots from such Shakespeare plays as Hamlet, Othello, Henry IV, Much Ado About Nothing, Cymbeline, Twelfth Night, and As You Like It.
  I’ve been a baseball fan all my life. My dad took me to my first game when I was a boy to see the San Francisco Giants play at Candlestick Park. Some of the greatest players of all time where there—Willie Mays, Juan Marichal, Willie McCovey—and I’ve been hooked ever since. It’s the finest game ever invented, and the fact that it has remained relatively unchanged for a hundred and fifty years and has survived the vagaries of time gives me solace. The poet Sharon Olds put it best when she said, “Baseball is reassuring. It makes me feel as if the world is not going to blow up.”
  Like most of you, I was formally introduced to Shakespeare in high school. I think it was Romeo and Juliet in Mrs. Burns’ English Class. Once I got to Cal Berkeley as an English Lit Major, Shakespeare was an inevitability, like Haley’s Comet, and I hopped on that comet and have been riding it ever since. I have read all of his plays, some multiple times, and my DVD movie library contains many of the best adaptations of his work—movies like Zeffirelli’s Romeo and Juliet (the one with the sublime Olivia Hussey), anything by Lawrence Olivier, and Kenneth Branagh’s Henry IV. I also enjoy movies or plays that have fun with Shakespeare (Theatre of Blood with Vincent Price comes to mind), or ones that entertainingly update his plays like Ten Things I Hate About You, which is a rendition of Taming of the Shrew set at a high school. It was movies like these that were the idea behind A Midsummer Madness.
  A Midsummer Madness is my third novel. Beggar King is an historical fiction novel set in Ancient Greece that was published in 2008. Railhead is a western novel set in 1869 Wyoming and was published in 2012. Historical fiction is my preferred genre, and I think that each of my literary influences—Hemingway, Faulkner, Twain, Steinbeck—all wrote historical fiction novels in one way or another. Certainly Dickens and Tolstoy did, and in terms of more modern influences I would point to Steven Pressfield and Charles Frazier. During my research for A Midsummer Madness, I experienced the added delight of discovering some wonderful baseball writers like Roger Kahn, W.P. Kinsella, and David Lamb.
  When I sit down to write a novel, it has to have a subject that grabs me and keeps me motivated through the months of research and writing. Whether it’s the myth of Odysseus or the old west or Shakespeare and baseball, the passion for my subject matter has to be there. And I hope that this passion comes out in my work. I try to write the same way Clint Eastwood directs—straight forward, moving the story along, not wasting scenes, and keeping the viewer engaged. If I can accomplish that, I’m happy. And along the way, if I can impart a little about my philosophy or the power of myth, without hitting the reader over the head with it, I’m even happier.
  I’m planning something of a launch party for my book here at the local library. My wife is also working hard on social media to get the word out. Signed copies of my book are also going to Larry Baer, CEO of the San Francisco Giants and to their manager Bruce Bochy. I’m hoping to use their positive feedback on my new website that iUniverse is designing for me.
  This is my first run at self-publishing, and I have to say that iUniverse delivered on everything they said they would in a timely and professional manner. I’ve also recommended them to other author-friends of mine as an alternative to trying to crack through the granite monolith that is traditional publishing. One of my favorite experiences was working with the iUniverse folks in designing my book cover. And, of course, nothing beats the kick you get when you see that book cover for the first time on Amazon.com or BarnesandNoble.com.
  My advice to aspiring writers would be directed to a very select group of authors who, like myself, are trying to write a book while at the same time working a full-time job and raising a family. Find a way to carve out the time. That’s all I can say. I wrote my first novel when I was a middle manager in a major corporation, with a wife and two kids, a home mortgage, and bills to pay. But I found a way to carve out an hour or two, here and there, sometimes at home and sometimes at work, and over time, little by little, brick by brick, I finished the book with my family and job still healthy and intact. It might take years, but what the heck. What else do you have to do?
12:43 pm
I am just now getting breakfast. So much for trying to get up early these past two days, but it is the weekend. I guess it’s understandable?
It’s what all kids my age do on the weekends, I just have to remind myself that.
Nothing really is going to go on today other than me trying to convince myself I need to clean.
I’m going to try to clean the rest of my up and maybe get the dishes done.
I’ll in later if anything interesting happens.
***
4:03 pm
It’s not all that interesting, but I’m playing Phase 10 with my family. Right now my step dad is in the lead, we’re actually almost done with the game.
He just won actually, and it’s kind of funny because our of all the times I’ve played this game with him, he’s never won until now.
He didn’t show off as much as I thought he would. He’s usually really cocky about it, but in a “ha ha, funny” kind of way.
I guess this is where I tell you I’ve been avoiding my feelings and that I’m not feeling anything much today.
‘Cause I don’t, at least not right now anyway. I don’t want to get into this right now.
***
9:56 pm
I just watched the greatest movie of all time; The Kingsmen!!!! It was amazing! I cannot wait to see the next one!
I need to start making fan fiction. ASAP! I neeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeed to!
I am so exited, I’m seriously super happy and siked about this movie!
I’m also super tired…
So I’m going to go to bed, if I can… and I’ll let you know if I’m still up.
I’m also really sorry today’s post was so short. Tomorrows will be better since it’ll be Monday and a new start on the week.
Goodnight! I’ll check in tomorrow.(If I don’t wake up dead)
Yours truly,
The Girl Who Ignores The World
Talisman 2
When Lewis had rejoined the team, he hadn't told them that he was their missing member. The second time they met up since he demise, he had finally noticed something he hadn't the before. Three things, actually.
Firstly; Mystery felt off. He'd always known there was more to the little dog than they thought, but it wasn't until he was a ghost that he could really see it. There was strange “veil” of energy that was wrapped around their mascot that he couldn't place or explain. The only thing he could tell was that their dog wasn't actually a dog. And something deep inside him said that angering the not-dog was a very bad idea. Arthur, weirdly enough, had a similar “energy veil” wrapped around him as their not-dog, but there were differences between them.
Mystery's veil was wrapped around him like a blanket or a bubble, with no real starting point or ending point. Almost like it was coming directly from the not-dog himself. And it gave a distinct feeling of “older than you, stronger than you”. He honestly wondered how he could have missed it all these years.
Arthur's veil, however, seemed to have a starting point, a source of some kind. There seemed to be something he was wearing under his shirt that the energy spread out from, wrapping it's way around the blonde's body from there. Not only that, but there seemed to be a faint warmth that came from the veil, heating Arthur's body. Yet he wasn't complaining about the heat.
Secondly; Arthur had a prosthetic arm. One that worked almost as well as a normal arm, which was one of the reasons he hadn't really noticed it the first time. The blonde had apparently lost his arm in the same cave Lewis had died in.
What bugged Lewis was that the missing arm was the same one that had pushed him over the edge. If a random animal had attacked Arthur in the cave, based on where and how he remembered Arthur standing, it would have attacked his right arm. Not his left.
Thirdly; Both Vivi and Arthur had no memory of what happened in the cave. Arthur couldn't remember pushing Lewis to his death, how he lost his arm, or why he'd practically jump out of his skin whenever Mystery startled or surprised him.
Vivi's memory loss wasn't too surprising, she had seen Lewis fall on the stalagmites that killed him. He remembered seeing her face and hearing her scream. Her being traumatized into forgetting what happened to him wasn't too surprising. Though her forgetting his entire existence seemed a little extreme, even for a traumatic experience.
Arthur's memory, however, stopped just after they split up. There are a few hazy images of a large dog, but other than that there's nothing but black until he woke up in the hospital. Again, even with a traumatic incident, that didn't seem right.
There were pieces missing, and he wanted to know what. And it seemed like traveling with his former-friend and former-girlfriend was the only way he would find them.
Chapter 4
<FFBE Fan Fiction... the story continues...>
Poker was an orphan who grew up in the fishing village Gull's Cry, several miles from the busy city of Norman. Since young, he was known for his fun-loving nature and witty cheekiness.
Two years ago, when Poker was eighteen, the village came under attack of sea monsters. Poker was mending fishing nets on a hired boat when it happened, and was caught right in the eye of the action. With his quick wits and water skills, Poker lured the sea monsters away from the village, keeping the villagers away from immediate danger.
In the battle with the sea monsters, Poker unknowingly unlocked mysterious great strength in his arms. With his new-found Hercules-like strength and well-practiced sword moves, he slaughtered the monsters.
No one in Gull's Cry was harmed in the encounter. The villagers was grateful to him, conferring him an affectionate nickname, the Son of Gull's Cry. The village head commissioned the making of a large sword using hardy native rocks from nearby lime caves. The large sword was given to Poker as a gift, with the name Gull's Rock.
After the incident, Poker continued leading the quiet life of a fisherman, helping out on local fishing vessels. His cheerful nature was a delight, as much as his strong arms were excellent help, to the older fishermen.
Two years had passed. One day in present time, after a fishing expedition, he chanced upon an injured man, hiding beneath an overturned boat near the wharf. Suspicious individuals were lurking in the vicinity. They seemed to be looking for the injured man. After Poker confronted them about their identities, they left hastily.
Poker returned to the boat where injured man was. By then, the man had slipped into unconsciousness. Poker's sharp eyes took notice of the man's attire. It was made from expensive fabric, shipped from faraway lands. Thinking that the man was a rich merchant and a victim of a failed robbery, Poker felt sorry for him. Being a kind-hearted fellow, Poker did not wish to leave the man to die from his wounds. Poker brought the injured man home.
Unknown to Poker, the injured man was Kato Kingsmen. The sole survivor of the Kingsmen family of Norman. <Refer to Chapter 2 for the background of Kato Kingsmen>
