Happy Fan Fic Writer Appreciation Day 2024!
The first lines of some amazing fics by some of my favorite 1D writers! Since I've done this post for so many years, this year I limited it to fics that were published in the last year or so. Please check out the past years' lists here where you'll find even more incredible writers! Thank you to every writer in our fandom for your gifts of fic to us all!
Louis hung up his keys and coat as his cottage door closed to protect himself from the drizzle.
He’d only given in because he was lonely.
The sun sat low in the sky, bathing the expanse of beach in warm, golden light.
Louis looked around the room, waiting for the others to laugh and let him know that the last ten minutes had all been an elaborate joke and of course they weren’t serious.
Harry’s thighs burn.
Harry Styles was a star.
Harry Styles has standards.
The man in the video was annoyingly chipper in the face of what seemed to Louis to be imminent disaster.
The first time it happens isn’t even intentional.
Louis Tomlinson strived for perfection in everything he did.
Liam Payne doesn’t know how he got here.
Standing in front of the second-hand mirror hanging on his closet door, Harry looks himself over.
If she was being honest, the last thing Harry wanted to do at the moment was get ready to go out.
It had been a good idea when he’d agreed to it.
Louis tilted his head up and took in a deep breath.
Bosworth Academy for the Well-Bred Omega sits upon a hill overlooking the quaint town of Kinsey in county Durwin.
Stumbling through the door, Liam dragged the sweat soaked vest over Zayn's head, pushing him back against the wall.
It’s December first.
He gets sent home.
Life wasn’t supposed to be like this.
All Louis’ life, he’s known he’s been different.
Liam is in the middle of fucking nowhere, the two-lane highway stretching ahead and behind him, as far as the eye can see.
When Harry first tells him, Zayn isn’t sure what to think.
Spending his Saturday night with an older man who was not his father was never what Harry Styles pictured his mid-twenties to look like.
Louis rolls over on his back, sighing in frustration as he fumbles for his phone on the nightstand.
“Wait! Please don’t go!”
Waking up from rut is a bleary, confusing experience.
He knew scrolling through his phone so soon would only end in disaster, and yet he opened Instagram anyway.
There’s music echoing throughout the rink, an instrumental Disney song.
The telly is on when Louis comes home, keys jangling in the lock as he swings the door open and kicks off his shoes into the haphazard pile by the mat.
“So, what did you have in mind?”
Two essential tips for anyone planning to take a nighttime stroll: don't forget to bring a heavier jacket, and make sure your phone is fully charged.
The large fluorescent lights groan awake high on the ceiling overhead as Harry flips on the light switch.
“You heading home, mate?” Liam asked as the movie ended.
Louis curls his hands around the balcony railing, tilting his head up to let the slanted rays of the evening sun catch on his face.
When Harry opened Niall's door, a combination of warm air and cologne greeted him.
“Harry? Are you home, love?”
It was the first day back after Winter Break, and Louis did not want to be here.
Louis has been single for 369 days, and the last place he wants to be is at a wedding.
Louis had always known Harry was his soulmate.
Even before Louis presented as an omega, he’d dreamed of one day finding his soulmate.

The Second Perspective ♠
A masterthread/post of all the easter-eggs, fun facts, and references to literature, BSD canon, film noir, and history included in my Soukoku fic, The Second Perspective.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Timeline ->
1958 to 1978
The gap of twenty years was super intentional. By the late 50s, McCarthy was censured by the senate, the Second Red Scare and anti-Soviet rhetoric were slowly losing public support and popularity. My choice to include the Rats in the House of the Dead was mediated by that fact. The late 50s is also when the LAPD and law enforcement across the country started making psychological evaluations ( of suspect quality ) mandatory, starting in Northern California, actually. Kinsey's publications in 1948 and 1953 were explosive--especially to the stifling, extremely heteronormative, nuclear-family morals of post-war 50s America. In 1970s, the term 'Serial Killer' officially enters the public's vocabulary. Despite not being an ongoing investigation, the re-opening of the Angel's Ripper case aligns with what is called the 'golden age' of serial killers. The 'second look' and the desire to re-sensationalize the case is due to Detective Dazai's belongings turning up, but also timely, as it would feed into the public's paranoia and fascination. I took some liberties with Los Angeles's mayoral election schedule ( which, if I'd been meticulous and historically accurate with, would have had TSP take place in the early days of 1977 or late in 1976 ). Los Angeles in the 70s was also suffering from serious smog--almost 200 bad air days a year. Akutagawa's lung condition ( which hasn't been touched on just yet with the exception of a throwaway lines at Tycheron and with Yosano ) is largely due to this bad air quality.
July 17th, 1958
The date of the Red Camellia murder was also chosen with intention. July, the peak of summer, rife with Americana, fireworks, and full California beaches, is everything the winter season of Camellia isn't.
Organizations -> The Double Black
A bit obvious, really, but the club's logo of the two black Ace playing cards is an obvious nod to Soukoku being equally matched partners, even if in this au their dynamic is wildly different ( If anything, Chuuya has the upper hand in this one--even if he doesn't quite know it yet ). The Double Black is also described as more Golden Age of Hollywood-like, since Kouyou runs it and she's quite the traditionalist, I figured she'd cringe ( or pass out ) at the sight of plastic plants in the vases and blue carpeting.
The Golden Coast Guild
The TSP equivalent of Hearst corporation, run by William Randolph Hearst, a media company that covered everything from celebrity gossip to politics with over a dozen papers and magazines. Hearst became obscenely rich, and in real life, used his wealth to support Marion Davies, an actress ( and his mistress ), whose life he nearly ruined. F. Scott Fitzgerald ( the actual author ) loathed Hearst's willingness to print yellow journalism ( basically, bullshit ) and Jay Gatsby's mansion is loosely inspired by Hearst's home in New York, I believe. I thought it would be funny to combine the two. I also have a soft spot for Fitz in canon, even if he does speak with the sound of a cash register in every word and there's an American flag behind him wherever he goes.
Tycheron and the House of the Dead
First, Tycheron, Sigma's casino business, gets it's name from the Greek goddess of luck--Tyche--named Fortuna by the Romans. I couldn't call it the 'Sky Casino' because well, there's no sky. But a goddess is pretty up there. California gambling law is extremely complicated, but casino boats, docked 3 nautical miles outside of state borders ( usually from a point in Santa Monica, where the bay/bight made those laws a bit easier to work around ) were a neat exception--at least, until they started getting repurposed for WWII. So, Sigma still evades the law by being 'out of bounds' with The Angelica gambling boat. The casino business as a way for the DoA to stick their noses into the L.A. political landscape is also a loose reference to Bugsy Siegel, and the Italian-American Mafia's attempts to expand westward with the establishment of casinos and the nurturing of Las Vegas. Siegel's mansion, where he was murdered for his thefts from the Mafia, also inspired the Mori estate.
Characters ->
The Red Camellia
The real life Nakahara Chuuya was quite the romantic. His poetry is described as 'Bohemian,' so I thought having him be a bit of a drifter-like character, almost mysterious and unnatainable to his fans and SSKK in the present, would be a bit similair to how much of what we know of Chuuya doesn't come from the main story in canon, either. Combining that with Dazai's obsessive desire to lock him in ( haha ) with a comitted relationship and his serious levels of devotion, makes for a pretty interesting dynamic, I think. Though, Dazai's no Catherine Tramell, and Chuuya is certainly not Curran--BI's dynamic has been flipped almost completely with TSP, but the crazy is the same. And though I describe him as a drifter, that's not to say this au's Chuuya isn't fiercely loyal, it's just his loyalties haven't had the chance to be tested just yet. I made the choice to have Chuuya called the Red Camellia in life because it's a direct subversion of other flower-tagged murders like: the White Rose murders, the Lilac Murder of William Desmond Taylor, the Black Dhalia ( inspired by the film, Blue Dhalia ), the White Gardenia murder, etc. etc. All of those monikers are posthumous, and created for the sole purpose of selling the story of a dead individual. Also, rather than having a journalist bestow it to him, Dazai is the one who comes up with it. Do what you will with that info . . . Additionally, Camellia japonica is native to East Asia, not the U.S. It can survive here, but it will struggle. The choice to set the story in L.A., in a period of harsh post-war crackdowns on Japanese/East-Asian immgiration into California also influenced this title. It was also a choice made based on the appearance of 椿Tsubaki in Soukoku official art. Their Japanese meaning of passionate love and a noble death, also holds true here.
KEY LAPD Characters with interesting qualities
Sasaki Nobuko, Homicide Detective - reference to canon Sasaki's background in criminology and experience as a lecturer at a Tokyo university. Captain -> Commander Fukuzawa Yukichi - Holds a position of authority similar to his role as the ADA's president in canon, but he's unenthusiastic about his career in the LAPD.
Note the lack of private eyes in the story so far!
Interesting PM Character references keeping this light for obvious, spoiler-y reasons
Elise - Elise is intentionally a grown woman in this au. And a nurse! A reference to both her presentation in BEAST and the Great War in the main BSD storyline, and a reminder of the timeline ( she'd have been 8-10 years old in the past TL! ). Her feisty nature is also retained. I was inspired by Lauren Bacall's Vivian in The Big Sleep, especially her meeting scene with Marlowe, when writing her meeting with Atsushi at the Mori Estate.
***SPOILERS procede with caution***
The Angel's Ripper
A reference to Los Angeles, but also Dazai's title as the Demon prodigy of Yokohama. Ripper, rather than Killer being used because of the surgical nature of the deaths ( Jack the Ripper was thought to be either a doctor or a policeman ).
Films ->
some of my major inspirations for this fic are:
Chinatown ( 1974 )
The Maltese Falcon ( 1941 )
Vertigo ( 1958 )
Last Night in Soho ( 2021 )
The Batman ( 2022 )
The Third Man ( 1949 )
The Silence of the Lambs ( 1991 )
The Big Sleep ( 1946 ) and lastly, on a much lighter note:
The Nice Guys ( 2016 ) I couldn't get Gosling's outfits out of my head after watching it. I took one look and thought: I need to get a BSD character in this obnoxiously-70s blue suit yellow shirt combo ASAP.
Phew. What a mess. This has largely been for me to keep track of my own thoughts and the tangled web I've been weaving with this fic, and it will likely get several updates over the course of me writing the second half of Part II and ( the much shorter ) Part III to TSP. But if you read it, and enjoyed it, I'm extra glad <3 I've been having a blast talking about my love for these films and this AU after keeping it bottled up for so long. I'm like shaken, corked champagne haha.
Signing off with the aesthetic of The Second Perspective's ending:

Season 1 Episode 11: Scarecrow
Quote of the ep: What scarecrow?
Rating: 0/6 on the Kinsey Scale
Soup: Since we start the episode in an apple orchard I remembered a Senegalese peanut soup with apples in it that I'm lowkey obsessed with
Ingredience:
Onion
Lemon
Apple
Celery
Peanut butter
Peanuts
Curry powder
Bouillon (1.5 L, 1 cube per 0.5 L)
What to do:
Chop your veggies, peel ur apple, chop ur peanuts too. Saute the onions for a bit then add juice from ur lemon along with the apples, celery and peanuts and a royal amount of curry powder. Add your bouillon and some spoonfulls of peanut butter, simmer for 15 mins and you're golden, just like this soup!
Now for the Review: OH GOODY this is one of the genuinely creepy episodes from the first season. Another one that I know folks skipped because they were too creeped out from the get-go. Meanwhile the scarecrow is just there like
Tumblr media
I really like that we as humanity just thought hey uh... birds? fuck 'em. let's put some spooky guys out there. Looking at you specifically crows 👁
Papa's calling and oof I wonder if it's hard on Dean that he calls Sam rather than Dean. And of course the dynamic over the phone between Dean and John is just straight to business.
Damn Mary was killed by a demon! And it has yellow eyes 😨 And they are everywhere... Hell? Empty. All the demons? Everywhere apparently.
The girls are fighting!!! And Sam would walk 500 miles and Sam would walk 1639 more just to find his dad in Sacramento and uh. tell him to eat shit probably
Tumblr media
Love Dean's interaction with Scotty out the diner
Tumblr media
Smile that lights up a room... Not a muscle twitched on that face during the whole interaction. And he hasn't had a stitch of work done
We have Meg!!! Honestly one of my all-time favorite characters because she's just so cunty with it.
So we have Dean trespassing in the orchard to see what's up and what do we see?
Tumblr media
Another smile that lights up the room with not a stitch of work done 🥰 And with a new tat too!
Ok just look at her
Tumblr media
"What happened to your ride?" "He was shady, I cut him loose" With the fuck ass bob too. OK Ellen Degenerate
I think it's sweet the way Dean tries to protect the Obvious Victim Couple from getting scarecrow murdered in an orchard at night by offering them to fix their brakeline and telling them to leave before sundown but um at this point just tell 'em 'I spotted you from across Scotty's Diner and I love your vibe' and get nasty about them. Might keep 'em off the streets
Sweet bonding moment between Meg and Sam. Oh you have family? Me too. They suck :( They put her down as such a sympathetic character at first too! But I think she immediately makes Good Soup at the end of the episode as a cliffhanger
Ooh I forgot that we're introducing a new type of monster in this episode: the pagan god. I think that's a nice mechanism to introduce "lesser" gods or simply entities from myths. And I love me a harvest god. Make those apples JUICY King. Love that they just happen to have an old manuscript of Scandinavian pagan legends written in modern English at some random library nearby too. oh oop - Dean got got, the librarian is in on this ... explains the modern English, the whole town must know about this.
People are always talking, but what happens when the talk ISN'T cheap - and it is what it is. Well, what I mean by that is...
Tumblr media
Hilary Clinton? I wouldn't wanna be in her shoes right now
Love that this bitch is just like 'we need some god damn apples so your adopted daughter is TOAST, Scot'
Dean is asking a valid question: how many cars and clothes have these people had to get rid of? Supposedly they have done this every year since the time the pilgrims settled in a 7-day cycle each year. That's a lot of fucking cars (and clothes)
This scarecrow is totally following the logic of 'the only thing worse than a spider is a spider you just lost sight of' but worse because the spider will just kill more annoying bugs in your house but the scarecrow will - LMAO I'm finishing this sentence differently than I thought because it just killed one of the townsfolk
How you like them apples?
Ah yes, there we have it
Tumblr media
Good soup 👌
I like the episode, I can see how this would have creeped me out a lot when I still regularly biked past dark cornfields as a teen. Also pushes the plot forward a bit along with the monster of the week. Speaking of: good introduction to pagan gods as monsters! 0/6 on the Kinsey Scale

"Do you ever think Laura Linney reads her playbill bio and cries? Does she dream of the day when she too will hold a Tony Award aloft in triumph, or has she resigned herself to being one of four actresses with the biggest fail rate and will one day hold the record outright? (Given that Estelle Parsons is in her nineties, Dana Ivey is in her eighties, and Jan Maxwell, my beloved, is dead?) Anyway, the point of this isn't to rub salt in the wound. Love you, Laura Linney."

"It's too mean to title this poll Biggest Tony Winner vs. Biggest Tony Loser but it's pretty damn accurate, and given the overwhelming whiteness of award shows overall, it's damn satisfying that the Black woman is the one with a record-breaking Tonys on her shelf and the white blonde woman is not (no matter how talented she is). Audra McDonald, my beloved, you're going to sweep this entire tournament."

Episode 2x05 The Rocky Horror Glee Show
Quote of the ep: This play has incredible pacing issues.
Rating: 2/6 on the Kinsey Scale
Best song: Time Warp
Worst song: There's A Light (Over At The Frankenstein Place)
Cat:

(x) A spooky cat for a "spooky" episode!
Now for the Review: A while ago, I watched the movie Rocky Horror Picture Show for the first time ever (yes, you can boo!), and I relentlessly annoyed everyone in attendance by pointing out they also did Rocky Horror in Glee. Eventually, @picknickleed (I think) said that maybe they’d give the Glee version a shot, and I said that it’s one of my favourite episodes.
If you just ignore all the plot. Let’s get into this bonkers plot.
Emma and Carl are still happily dating, and Emma is raving over Rocky Horror. Carl’s taken her to either a performance or a screening of the movie, but she’s a fan. Carl comes to glee club again and sings Hot Patootie to get everyone into it, and it is honestly an underrated song. I love this moment a lot. I just love performances where the kids are just having fun in the choir room.
Mr. Schue is still his jealous self, so in order to impress her, he tells her they’re doing Rocky Horror with the glee club. The kids are excited about this, and Mike dares himself to take on the role of Frank-N-Furter. His parents still have to sign the permission slip, but yeehaw. (Or, Mike, you could’ve done what Kurt did, and sign the form yourself in plain sight of the teacher.)
And unfortunately, Mike’s parents don’t approve of it. Ah, fuck. Mercedes decides to take on the role, telling Mr. Schue she can do it, and when she sings Sweet Transvestite, she proves that she can. (Even though Amber got stuck in that lift for idk 2 hours while filming. Ah well, it was worth it, since it’s amazing.)
Casting is underway, and Sam is chosen to play Rocky, but he’s a bit unsure about it. His costume consists of only a pair of golden shorts. I think Finn gets jealous, or something, since he is also going through a journey about his body. He’s playing Brad and he also has to appear shirtless at one point, but he isn’t as fit and muscled as Sam. He practises his confidence by going to school in his Brad costume, aka only his underpants and glasses. This leads to commotion, since ya know, it doesn’t happen every day that a kid comes to school in his underwear. Is it appropriate of the glee club to motivate its students to come in such a state of undress to school? Principal Figgins has something to say.
This would be a great opportunity for Sue to point this out, but Sue has an agenda of her own. She wants the show to continue, since she, for some reason, has a stake in it. Two characters played by Meatloaf and another important Rocky Horror person negotiate with Sue about something, but I am sorry, I have no clue what happened there. Or what they requested. All I remember is that Sue needed the show to go on.
And lastly, there’s the Mr. Schue/Emma/Carl thing. Finn drops out of the show at one point, and Mr. Schue has the bad idea of stepping in. He wants to rehearse with Emma’s help and Emma takes on the role of Janet for it and sings Touch-A, Touch-A, Touch-A, Touch Me during an uncomfortable scene, but hey, at least Brittany and Santana are cute in it. Mr. Schue and Emma get really into it, which scares Emma off.
Later, Carl, who plays Eddie, crashes the rehearsal and he calls Mr. Schue out on it. Mr. Schue argues they were just rehearsing, but Emma was so shocked by it she told Carl. (Fun fact, originally Carl was going to play Frank-N-Furter, but I am glad it went to Mercedes.)
Also, is this the episode where Emma and Carl get secretly married? Or is that later in the season?
All of this cumulates to the fact that they cannot perform the show. There’s just too much drama and bullshit happening. Mr. Schue cancels the entire ordeal and the kids (including Finn, who’s come back, but again, I forgot what journey he went on) are disappointed. But it wasn’t all in vain! They will still perform Rocky Horror for themselves! That leads to Time Warp, one of the best performances in the show.

Probably my favorite re-read is "and i would search the night sky to find you" by devilinmybrain(venomedveins) on AO3! Such a good a/b/o fic. Honestly everything by that author is golden
Yes, I love Jen’s writing, too. I haven’t gotten to this one yet, though.
and I would search the night sky to find you by @thedevilinmybrain (E, 57K)
Harry Styles is a high class, well-bred Omega attending Bosworth Academy - a prestigious boarding school looking over the small town on Kinsey. He has his whole life already planned for him, learning his place as the potential mate for an important Alpha, practicing his home making skills, and be obedient above all else.
When he attends a school trip into town though, he meets Louis Tomlinson - a blacksmith and mouthy Alpha who doesn't particularly care for the standards of high society nor for the people in it. But things are not always what they seem and a past grievance may change the lives of everyone involved forever.

behold my very biased and arguably baseless list of where I think BHol’s characters fall on the Kinsey Scale:
The Corinthian: 3. Comics Corinthian is another matter, but the one Holbrook plays?? This man nightmare is pannnn
Cap Hatfield: X. I am always of the completely unfounded belief that Cap would very much like to roam in the woods and occasionally jerk off to nature sounds and have nothing to do sexually with anyone thankyouverymuch
Clement Mansell: 2. Yeah, he’s mostly into women. Yeah, he also does sometimes go out to get his dick sucked at a glory hole. He has cruised before. He actively is nursing a big crush on Raylan Givens.
Quinn McKenna: 1. Yes, he’s into women. Yes, at a certain point a hole is a hole. (And hey, good soldiers give their brothers-in-arms a helping hand in exchange! Only fair.) Firm believer that what happens in the desert stays in the desert.
Klaber: 5. Idk why, but I get mostly single-target sexuality vibes from this dude, and he seems laser focused on his boss
Ty Shaw: 3. This baby is just so wildly down! He gives off the exuberant touchy-feely vibes of a golden retriever bisexual who’s finally gotten to go to his first pride parade and the gays are liquoring him up. He’s totally surprised girlfriends by being hella down for MFM threesomes
Cal: 5. I would’ve said a 6, but apparently he checks out a girl in Bikeriders, so he gets bumped down! But. The single earring?? The fact that he’s a California transplant?? Holbrook’s interview where he says that Cal’s afforded some leeway on certain things because he’s the mechanic?? Gayyyy
Donald Pierce: 5. Holbrook based his accent and mannerisms off of the famously gay Tennessee Williams, and he ain’t one bit subtle with his crush on Logan. But also canonically involved with Gabriela Lopez! Basically confirmed: Pierce is mostly into men but demisexual for the right girl.
Steve Murphy: 6. This boy is so deep in the closet Javier Peña really ought to launch a rescue mission. Him flashing lovestruck eyes at his partner and then coming home and basically giving Connie a respectful head nod?? He has made a career of sublimating his queer desires into being the very bestest DEA agent ever. He might actually have a heart attack if a man kissed his cheek.

31. Do you have any OCs? Tell us about them!
32. Summarize a random fic of yours in 10 words or less.
Fic writer ask game
31) Do you have any OCs? Tell us about them!
OH BOY. There are two OCs who play big roles in Return to Sender: Vernon, Trapper's fellowship advisor, now mentor, and the guy who helps him recover after Hawkeye's "death," and Hortense, who..... was only just introduced this last chapter and is going to play a big role in the entirety of the second act.
Vernon is almost Simon Kane from Stagecoach West transplanted into a hospital environment. He fought in the second world war, he's a thoracic surgeon, he's a kinsey 6. He thinks of Trapper as a good friend, but he understandably worries about him.
Hortense is delightful. She's a scrub nurse at the same hospital with a quick sense of humor and is extremely focused on independence. She wants a relationship, but she loves her job more than anything and refuses to sacrifice it for the express purpose of becoming a homemaker, though she would like a family, some day. She's extremely femme-presenting and likes appearing "lady-like," but she can match Hawkeye joke for joke. She and Hawk are gonna date for a little while :3
32) Summarize a random fic of yours in ten words or less
dskghsdghsgshdhgh I pulled up a random number generator and it rolled California Golden Boy this fic is fucking haunting me. Trapper helps BJ piss (kinky) 👍
