I decided to torture myself today and watch as many videos of “I Am The One (Reprise)” as I could find.  But damn do I love comparing different interpretations of Gabe and how he’s portrayed by each actor.  And how the way the actor playing Dan can impact Gabe’s choices.

In general, I find Aaron’s Gabe to be much darker and manipulative than Kyle Dean Massey’s but in this song Aaron’s Gabe just seems desperate to be recognized and seen whereas Kyle’s is trying to trap Dan. 

And then Brian and Aaron, how Brian looks directly at Gabe when he says “I am the one who watched while you died” and reaches out to touch him when he sings “I am the one who loved you”  And then the way Aaron nods while Brian looks at him fully and says his name.  The “hi dad” here is much more childlike and innocent

Not really a part of the Dan/Gabe essay I’m writing but I love how destroyed Aaron looks when Diana walks out.  And Aaron sounds destroyed when he sings, “I know you told her that I’m not worth a damn” I also love that Aaronjust barely touches Bobby’s shoulders and its like Bobby makes the choice to sit back down.  The second Aaron’s arms are around him Bobby is holding him back rubbing his thumb over Aaron’s arms. The way Bobby and Aaron cling to each other as they sing together is just waterfalls on my face.  Aarons head on Bobby’s shoulder as he clutches Bobby’s arm with one hand and his shirt with the other. As they sing “I am the one who watched while you died” Bobby breaks free and holds the arms of the chair instead while Aaron basically tries to turn Bobby’s head with his hand to force him to look at him. And then Aaron gets frustrated with being ignored so he stands up and Bobby finally turns to look at him and says Gabe and the smile on Aarons face as he kneels down beside him once again clinging to each other.  And then Aaron’s whispered, “Hi dad” like he’s trying not to cry 

Kyle Dean and Bobby is a very interesting contrast to Aaron and Bobby. When Kyle sings “I know you told her that I’m not worth a damn” he sound livid.  Kyle throws Bobby down into the chair.  And Bobby’s Dan seems much more agitated by everything fighting against Kyle’s grip.  Bobby clutches his own heart until he turns to look at Kyle and say Gabe’s name.  Kyle sits there and lets Bobby touch his cheeks before running away the instant he says “hi dad”

Kyle Dean and Jason have a very interesting dynamic.  Kyle throws Jason back down in the chair and then when he hugs him it seems sinister instead of desperate, like he’s trying to choke the life out of Dan.  But I love Jasons choice to slowly turn and look at Gabe during “I am the one who watched while you died” and then immediately look away as if he’s ashamed.   And when Kyle says “hi dad” Jason tries to reach out to him, but Kyle runs away before they can touch.

Gosh and Curt and Asa how Curt is leaning closer and closer into Asa’s line of sight when Gabe first comes forward to sing with Dan. Curt basically throws Asa back down in the chair when he tries to stand up and then Asa is purposefully looking away when he sings “I am the one who watched while you died” while Curt is staring directly at him.  So that when Asa finally turns to look at him and say his name, literally reaching out for him before Curt has a chance to it hits that much deeper.

I’d love to see how Brandon Victor Dixon tackled this song so if anyone can hook a girl up I’d be eternally grateful
